Accept

Prologue
Accept
How many candidates really had an opportunity to become your singer, I mean how many of them were really good enough?

None! One, I mean we’ve never tried anybody else.

But what’s so special about Mark?

We just met him by accident and we just loved him. You have to understand, we never wanted really to start Accept and weren’t looking for a singer, we just happened to meet Mark and thought, “wow, he’s perfect”, so at that moment we decided to start Accept with Mark, but we’ve never tried anybody else.

You released single which included 2 songs and how does the rest material of the album sound like? What would you tell us about it that people would definitely want to hear it?

We recorded 14 songs, 12 of them will be on the album and special edition with 14 songs, I think.

This time, who wrote the music and lyrics, what will b
Accept
e the massage of its lyrics?

As far as about music - it’s all written by Peter and me, and Mark wrote all the lyrics. In the past it used to be Stefan and my wife - Gaby. She wrote a lot of lyrics for the most Accept albums; but now when we have an American singer, it’s better if singer sings his own lyrics, makes more sense. And the content of the lyrics is very similar to what we’ve always done, towards to the stuff, social awareness, we’re talking about, people like on Wall Street, whole scandals of militarism, we do talk about militarism. Some of them - serious, some of them- not so much. But, all in all, it’s very heavy metal, fits to the history of Accept.

Tell me about the video “Teutonic Train”, who was responsible for that, who created the ideas? And why the guitars you’re playing in the video looks so ancient, you know, old. What does symbolize two burning guitars in the end, is it kind of reference to the past of Accept?

Well, obviously the burning guitars is going back to “Restless and Wild”, it was just fun to do, back to the past of Accept. And video was shot in LA, we found this guy, Dave Blass, great director and together we talked of what kind of video we might want, and we all agreed that it’d be the best for us to have no story or anything like that, so just performance video in cool location. What better can you have than playing guitar solo on top of the tank? It was perfect!

Where did you find tanks?

LA, there is some sort of military museum, it’s some sort of graveyard for military equipment. We didn’t find it, David, the director found it and we thought it was perfect.
And what’s the story about guitars, why do they look so old?

Yeah, yeah.

Well, it’s a new guitar but it made to look old. The one I’m playing in the video it’s a Jackson guitar, I wanted it to look like my o
Accept
ld flying V, cause the old flying V that I have and always used it for the last 20 years, I don’t want really to take it out on the road anymore, but it’s sort of look just like that, very old and beat up, paint just peeled off. I didn’t want brand new guitar, I wanted it to look and feel like my old flying V; Jackson company made it for me, Wolf Hoffman special V! Cool! Really nice!

In your career you had recorded one album without UDO which hadn’t been accepted too well. How do you feel if there’s some difference now from 20 years back? Do you think that now people are more willing to try to listen something new or nothing ever changes?

It’s a totally different situation, back in when UDO left Accept for the first time; we wanted to take Accept in some other direction. That’s why we were looking for somebody who could take us there and as we all know it didn’t work back then for some reason. But this time we didn’t want to change anything
Accept
we wanted to go out on the road and play Accept songs. When UDO said that he had no interest, we said we had to respect your decision, because it was his own band for 20 years, but we are the band, we wanna continue what we always done, we didn’t want to change anything. Honesty, our first choice initially was always UDO, but he made it clear that he had no part in it, he had no interest. We were very lucky just to find somebody who happened to work at the perfect time. To good to be true, the story is almost hard to believe, but all of the sudden, we ran into perfect guy, who could probably be the only guy in the world, who could take us that far. At that point we made a decision that we all have to write new record, we can’t just go out on the road, start touring right away with new singer. We felt it very important to have a new record with new singer. (some terrible noise is heard) Here he is – warming up, sounds like somebody is getting killed.

Y
Accept
ou decided to work with Nuclear Blast, what’s so good about this label and what do you expect from this collaboration?

Well, we wanted to have people on board who really understand heavy metal, and from what I can tell nuclear blast- perfect partner their catalogue they really know history of metal, they really know Accept, they really dedicated other than that I wasn’t really involved in the whole decision process who’d be the record company that’s all our management thing. I know we’ve been talking to other labels but those people from NB they are the best partners and they know what to do with Accept. Future will show how it will turn out. It’s all brand new right now, but so far we very exited.

You were working with Andy Sneap on this new record, did it affect anyhow on the sound of new album? How is he different comparing with whom you worked before?

Oh, yeah! Very much! He’s not only one of the greatest producers i
Accept
n the world, but one of the hottest metal producers right now. And he is also an Accept man, I mean he grew up with us, when he was a kid, he was heavy metal fan, he’s been there, watched us. He knows everything about Accept, he was a perfect choice for us. The same thing happened with Andy - we’ve never looked for anybody else. We met him and thought, “perfect”. We didn’t talk with 15 different people, we met him and we talked and immediately we knew the guy is perfect. This record sounds much, much better than Andy has ever done, so there’s incredibly good songs in this record. We’re very pleased with his work.

You’ve been doing photography for quite long time by now, at the moment your music activity is pretty high and schedule is pretty tough, so less time left for photography. Do you miss it or as you are traveling in different countries you have an opportunity to shoot at new places, get some new inspiration?

It’s very hard to do both
Accept
at the same time, photographer and guitar player. I don’t even have a good camera with me, because I focus on music. But, you know, maybe I’ll have time again, because no band in the world tours all the time, I’ll start again. So when there’s a week or month I’m not doing music, I’ll probably go back to photography for as long as I live, because I’ve been doing it professionally for so many years now. It’s a good way to make a living. And I like it very much and I’m professional and can get high dollar photoshoots. It’s a good way to make a living, because you have a lot time to do other stuff as well. But at some point I started to miss playing music very much, I don’t get enough satisfaction, you know, I get more satisfaction playing music tonight in front of the crazy metal freaks. (laughs)

Have you ever considered making photos from the stage?

Oh yeah, but whom can I shoot? Only the audience and other band members. But I don’t
Accept
know how it’ll look! I think people wanna see me playing guitar, not doing photoshoots (laughs)
Yeah, let me put the guitar down and start to shoot everything and everyone (laughs)

Maybe during the drum solo…

Okay, okay, something for the future!

Many guitar players are doing video guitar lessons, telling how to play and showing their skills. Are you planning to do something like that?

I’ve been asked for it so many times, but haven’t done it yet

You don’t have time or just don’t want to do it?

I didn’t give it enough thought, maybe one day! I haven’t come to a conclusion yet. I wouldn’t say “never”, but I’ve never done it so far. I just felt time wasn’t right or I don’t know. I watched some of other people videos and thought, “err, that’s not me”, I’m not a technical player; I play from the gut, from the heart. I don’t
Accept
really know what I’m doing, I just know how to do it, I cannot explain it very easily; as I said, I’m not technical, my mind doesn’t work that way, it’s very hard to explain also, you know…

New album called “Blood of the Nation”, that’s pretty pretentious name, what nation do you refer to or it’s some kind of generalization?

Yeah, it is! It’s a generalization, we are talking about all people at war, how the world is constantly at war with each other, people give their blood to defend the idea, to defend the nation. It’s really just a general term; we picked this title because it sounded the most like Accept. It’s just one of the songs on the record; we went thru all twelve, thirteen, thinking, which one of those songs would be good for album title. It happened to be the one. It’s talking about war, military and stuff.

You’ve planned two performances supporting AC/DC, do you think that Brian Johnson will sin
Accept Accept 2005
g with you “I’m a rebel”?

Probably not. (laughs) But you’ll never know, you’ll never know.

In 2005 you united with UDO for some reunion shows, back then how possible it was to record an album with him? Will any DVD from that tour be released or it was all left and forgotten?

Well, we wanted to release something, but UDO didn’t want us to. We always loved UDO and get along okay on professional level. We respect his decision not to continue Accept. We’re not bitter, but sometimes I have the idea that he is bitter. I don’t know why, because he turned us down, he could be in the venue tonight, but he chose not to. In 2005 we never ever talked about making a record, because he specifically said, “we’re just going to do 15 shows, 20 shows and I have no more time after that cause I’ve got to do UDO”. Too bad, but why not! We wanted to continue and do more shows, but he was like ewr. So, what you gonna do! Fine.
