Beyond the Black

We are ready to rock

Prologue
Interview with German newcomers BEYOND THE BLACK right before their shows in Russia.
Beyond the Black
Hello Jennifer, hello Stefan, it was really nice to see the announcement of Beyond The Black Russian shows, what are your expectations concerning the upcoming concerts, do you know anything about Russia? Do you want to see something special here, expect the venues? Are you in touch with your Russian fans?

Stefan: We are all really excited! Noone of us has ever been in Russia, so we are really looking forward to seeing you all and see as much of the country as possible. That is always a bit tricky on tour because there is so much to do everyday, but we will try. We have some communication with our russian fans and have heard about their fan site on vk.com – so yeah, we look forward to meeting you all.

Your second album “Lost In Forever” has been recently re-released with bonus tracks but it didn’t pass so much time after its first release. Why did you do this re-issue? Have you changed the label or so? And why your second album was released so fast after the first one?

Stefan: Lost in Forever hasn’t been released internationally before, and we had the luck to work with UDR/Warner Music so we could finally have it available worldwide. And of course, you want the re-release to be a bit special so we decided to have some bonus songs.

What do you prefer: to perform at headline shows or to play as a support/special guest with such monsters like Scorpions or Epica? Could you remember anything interesting about these collaborations with such bands?

Stefan: It both has great aspects, but on headline shows we play longer, and it’s always great not to leave the stage so early :D touring with and opening for bigger bands is always great because you get inspired and meet a lot of cool people in other bands, and you see and play bigger venues than usually which is always nice.

Beyond The Black passed a serious line-up change not so much time ago. Why did it happen? What could you say about the news guys? What did exactly change for you personally? How much is important for you as a front woman to have a support of the rest of the band? Do you have fun working with other members? Do you support any contact with your band mates out of stage, studio?

Jennifer: We were confronted with the next step for BTB and had the chance to go abroad and to new territories. Being in a band like BTB is a fulltime job and you have to put everything in it to make it work and keep the wheel spinning. The former bandmates and I sat several times together and talked about future plans and the readiness to make sacrifices. We all came to the decision that we had different ideas and views of BTB’s future and they couldn’t go the long run due to private or other work commitments. So we decided to part ways but in a good way and without any beef. Quite simple actually…
The support of my band mates is eminent and without them I wouldn’t be Beyond The Black. My band mates are not just band mates. We are a family and the new guys are ready to conquer the world together with me. We love each other and are ready to rock.

I have seen some information that your song In The Shadows became a part of soundtrack for the movie Northmen: A Viking Saga together with a song of Amon Amarth. How did it happen, is this movie popular and added new fans for Beyond The Black? Do you like these subjects like Vikings, etc?

Jennifer: Well, this is a good question. The collaboration with the movie makers of Northmen accrued because our label suggested to shoot the video for “In The Shadows” in South Africa and these were the same places the Northmen movie was shot. So somehow, someone knew someone and it worked out! I love this kind of movies. Especially if you have strong woman appear in them and kick some ass!

I’m a good friend and partner of Hannes Braun and Kissin’ Dynamite that are also at Elephant Music. Could you tell how does it work with you and Hannes as one of the songwriters and could you tell more about your work at Pearl In A World of Dirt, your perfo
Beyond the Black
rmance at Wacken and vice versa your participation in the latest KD album on Masterpiece. How does it work to sing together with Hannes?
Could you also tell us about KD DVD shooting in Stuttgart last year?

Jennifer: I’ve been working with Hannes since the very first ideas of Beyond The Black songs. He’s an awesome songwriter and it’s funny how different he works in contrast to Sascha Paeth (for example). Hannes is a one of the guys whose ideas are just bubbling out of him and Sascha is more the one who is more calm and think more about the feelings that come across, but every way works very well for them. It’s very interesting for me to work with such completely different approaches. To the Features: I love both of them! With Masterpiece it was a very good feeling for me to give Hannes something back after his incredible support at the beginning! That includes also the performance at Wacken. For our very first show it was great to have somebody on stage who knows how it works at Wacken and who had not that much stage fright - in big contrast to us! I was at Stuttgart to sing our feature Masterpiece with KD. It was really awesome to sing it live with the band! That’s always very different to singing it at the studio. I love both, but both sides have their beautiful specials.

Some time ago you presented a teaser for "Songs Of Love And Death" video, but it wasn’t released, if I’m not mistaken. Do you still plan to do it?

Jennifer: You mean released for the international market? We are planning indeed to release it. I will keep you posted when and how!

Let’s have a look to the past: how did the idea of Beyond The Black appear? Did you wanted to sing such stuff since the beginning and the band was organized around you or was it some casting?

Jennifer: I tried so much staff in my life so far and live music since I am a small kid. It took definitely a journey and it was definitely not planned to end up with Beyond The Black and Symphonic Metal, but this is right now exactly the kind of music I breathe and love.

Would you like to release some solo stuff besides Beyond The Black? Are you totally metal or do you want to experiment with some pop-rock or so?

Jennifer: I have so much to do with BTB right now and have my focus 100% only on BTB. But I could imagine doing also some other stuff in my life as long as it has something to do with music, but at the moment BTB is everything I want, so why should I change that? 🙂 I am not totally metal but totally music. I love Queen, Phil Collins, Disney music and Bring Me The Horizon. Such a great mix of music…☺

Do you compose something and do you have an opportunity to come up with your ideas in your creative team or do you prefer to be concentrated on singing?

Jennifer: No, I am definitely involved 100% in the songwriting process and the new band mates have some great songwriting talent! I love singing but I also love songwriting.

What kind of bands, singers, musicians influenced you the most?

Stefan: For me it’s different types of music and musicians. It ranges from Pink Floyd to Metallica to some strange ambient music no one has ever heard of. There is so much music out there that it is really hard to tell ☺

Do you remember your very first show with Beyond the Black, how it was, did you feel afraid, excited?

Stefan: My first show wit BtB was a headline show in november 2016. It was crazy, I had no idea what to expect, how the fans would react to us new guys...but it was just great! We had a great time on stage from minute one and I would not want to miss a single second ☺

How did your start your career? I’ve heard you have some bands before like Saphir, what did it play?

Jenny: I started to sing in a choir as a kid and founded soon after that a b
Beyond the Black
and with my brother. We played band contests, school concerts and stuff like that. I played in Saphir and did some singer/songwriter stuff but it all lead to Beyond The Black and what we do right now and I love what we do.

Do you think that participation in casting shows (that a extremely popular nowadays everywhere) is useful for future career of participants?

Stefan: In the beginning of these shows it seemed like you could get a good start in the music business but nowadays it seems that there are too much of them. Many participants are forgotten soon and might get frustrated. I personally think there is no shortcut for success, you have to work continuously, stay focused, love what you do and have a high frustration tolerance, or else you won’t make it.

Is it ok for you to have serious international career being so young?

Jennifer: Yes! Why not? We have a great team around us who handle a lot of work behind the scenes and take care of us and try to keep pressure away from us and force us into challenges so we can grow bigger personally.

Could you remember any funny story from the road or from the studio? Do you have funny and crazy afterparties or it’s less common for a girl rocker?

Stefan: Our tour life is pretty funny everyday to be honest :D our aftershow parties are regular, I think. We all want to have a good time, but sometimes a good night sleep is the best thing ever (and often enough a rare opportunity on tour)

How do you feel: is it really difficult for a young band to conquest its space on the scene? What would you recommend to the newcomers?

Stefan: It is difficult, yes. As said above, you need to stay focussed and work continuously, and have people around you with the same drive and passion that you have. From then on, you need a loooong breath. But if you are patient and live through the bad times, good times will come. Endurance is the key!

What about your fans: do you have more girls or boys in your fan base? Which countries besides Germany like you the most?

Stefan: It is very even actually! Our biggest fan base so far is in Germany which makes our shows there really cool, but apart from that every country has been so warm and welcoming that it is hard to pick one.

What are your ideal man? What a guy should do in order you like him? ;) Do you have a boyfriend and doesn’t he feel jealous due to your work? ;)

Jennifer: Wow.. no one ever asked this question, I guess. 😅 Let’s see.. I think, the ideal man for me is very honest, he has to give me the feeling that I can lean on him and that we support each other. That he catches me in his arms sometimes and that he still knows that he doesn’t always have to be the strong point of us. Everything else I wanna keep in private. I just wanna say, that I’m very happy like it is at the moment. 😊

Do you think, is more difficult to be on tour, on the road, in the bus, to be a part of a rock metal band for a woman? You need to look good but it’s not always possible on the road ;) And have you ever faced any aggressive treatment on tour maybe?

Jennifer: So far I can’t tell any experiences of bad treatment. It is actually the other way around. Most of the time everyone is very careful, polite and amicable. Sure the sanitary facilities are not always the best but the guys around me are treating me wonderfully and with a lot of respect and I love touring. Learning new countries and cities and new fans! It is just amazing.

Are you going to study some other profession or to get more music education in the nearest future? Do you think it’s important since many rock legends don’t have an “academic” education?

Jennifer: I am still studying music management. So lets see how long I can hold on to that…☺

Could you add some words for Russian fans, what can they expect from the upcoming shows?

Stefan/Jennifer: Dear fans, we cannot wait to see you guys and bring our show to you! Expect a great and rocking evening with us and take care until then!
