U.D.O. Frontman Talks Split With STEFAN KAUFMANN, Possibility Of Reunion With ACCEPT

Mark Dean of Myglobalmind webzine recently conducted an interview with former ACCEPT and current U.D.O. frontman Udo Dirkschneider. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Myglobalmind: You are about to release a new album, "Steelhammer", which is the first not to feature [guitarist] Stefan Kaufmann.

Udo: Yes, that is correct. The problem was he is a very busy man. He did a recording with [another artist], which took three months, and also played on tour. I think then that the problem was he wanted to move his studio back to his hometown. He didn't want to be involved in the composing and songwriting this time on this album. We had a problem then, at the beginning of this year. He was getting more and more work touring, etc., and he said that he wouldn't have as much time to do this. Then he said that he was out of the band. He did offer to come and help us out if there was any problem and we needed him.

Myglobalmind: That must have been very difficult, personally as well as professionally for you. Stefan has worked with you for a long time, going back to ACCEPT?

Udo: Yes, we have been working together for a very long time now I do everything with Fitty [Wienhold], who is my bass player. We wrote some songs together for the new album and they came out well. He also has a studio where we are living, we produced the album together. In the end, I think that it worked out very well.

Myglobalmind: There are many bands of the Eighties which have reformed and reunited in recent years. Is [a reunion with ACCEPT] something that you have ever been approached about doing, is it something that would interest you?

Udo: That's a very long story. Of course, I have certainly been asked. Unfortunately, Wolf [Hoffmann, ACCEPT guitarist] is telling everybody that he has never been in touch with me, though I can show you tons of e-mails. I have been asked about rejoining for a reunion and didn't directly say no. I did it already once and there was a lot of shit [that] happened. I then said, "OK, guys, if I do this, then I want to have this and this." Wolf then said that he didn't want to do it, so I said "Goodbye. Thank you very much and good luck." [laughs]

Myglobalmind: Do you then prefer to focus on U.D.O., and the future for that band rather than looking back to your legacy with ACCEPT?

Udo: Yes. The problem is if I did ACCEPT again and it doesn't work… then there was an issue regarding the name with Wolf. He was stealing the name in the Eighties. He was also doing interviews to promote "Blood Of Nations" and talking so many bad things about me with so many lies. I don't know why he did that. However, that is history now.

Myglobalmind: How do you maintain your energy, particularly on stage?

Udo: Many people ask me that, I try to live healthily as possible. I do nothing special, exercise-wise or whatever. I walk a lot, and in the summertime I do a lot of swimming and running. The shows are fun for me to do and I like to be on tour and that also keeps you fresh.

Немцы вообще ребята сложные. Себе на уме, в тоже время воспитанные и тактичные. В общем, не лыком шиты :) По крайней мере мне такие попадались по жизни. Думаю, что Удо и Вольф друг друга стоят :)

Вот интервью, ещё больше поясняющее ситуацию со Штефаном Кауфманном:

Udo: With Stefan, the reason for his departure was related to back problems.

The same problem that stopped him from being a drummer with Accept back in the day?

Udo: Yes. We had a problem while we did the recording for the album “Rev-Raptor” where we had to stop working for three months as he couldn’t move! He was lying still or visiting the hospital – it was a real nightmare.

At some point he recovered and took part on the “Rev-Raptor” tour which was of course a very long one and it is true that every tour we do is getting longer and longer. He was feeling so much pain that he had to take drugs in order to get by but when you constantly feel in pain you cannot be in a good mood. He was always aggressive and the atmosphere within the band was very bad.

I am quite surprised to hear that as all the clips we have watched of the band performing live portrayed him as a man full of energy. In “Live In Sofia”, this top quality DVD/Blu-ray release of yours, he seems to be integral to its success. It is quite strange to hear you say the things you do about him.

Udo: It is, I know but that’s the way it was. So, after the last show of the “Rev-Raptor” tour I had a conversation with him and told him “Stefan, I think that the best way forward is for you to stop being on tour with us”. He was not really surprised to hear me say that but it was a case of someone having to stop him, you know, and the best thing was for that person to be me.

I mean, I know Stefan since he was eighteen years old. I told him “this is the best thing to do as otherwise we will only be having more and more problems within the band”. It was only after a while that he turned and told me “it was a good thing that you asked me to stop”, especially after I heard that he still had such problems to deal with.

I actually told him that he could still be our producer and write songs from U.D.O as he did before, that he could still work for us behind the scenes but then he told me that he could not do that for this new album as he really needed to take a break.

He wanted to get back to his studio in his home town and work with music videos; he did not want to be either a producer or write any songs but he did tell me that if I needed his help or in case that something went wrong that I could call him. Working without Stefan after all these years was like a new thing for me.

Многострадальный, вечно всеми обкраденный Маэстро тактично умалчивает, как получил в тех же 80-х в подарок лучший свой "сольный" альбом Animal House, полностью написанный Хоффманном, Балтесом и Кауфманом. И рассыпался за это в благодарностях в буклете. Совпадение? Не думаю. Поменял Удо имя Ассерт на старт своей карьеры и был весьма доволен. А с успехом возрожденного Ассерт пришло время лепить из себя жертву обмана.
