Curing with the music
 |
Zeromancer is going to visit Moscow! That’s interesting, do they know that it will be a medic fetish party? And what they think about our mad love with “dance metal” shows where we can as see great musicians, as show ourselves off?...
I suppose that will be better to ask, say, Kim from ZMR personally about it…
|
The first question I wanna ask you – do you know that the party you will perform at the Moscow club – it will be medic fetish fest? And what do you think about girls in the short dresses of nurses?
Oh. I really didn’t know that. A medic fetish fest! That is insane. We are for sure doing Doctor Online this evening then. A whole crowd of girls dressed up as nurses will be too much for me I guess. It’s definitely one of my biggest fetishes and I will have a serious heart condition that night. My mom was a nurse and all her friends were nurses as well. I was hospitalized for detox of migrainepills last year and I must say I’m really comfortable staying at a hospital.
Can you tell more about the band creation – what is the main idea, the concept of your music, the audience you play for?
Music is the blood flowing through our veins. We are so deep into this we have no idea how it is doing something else. Zeromancer was formed on the remains of the band Seigmen, which was a famous Norwegian dark rock act for a decade. We fled the country after the split-up and moved to Los Angeles to get a different environment and a new perspective on things in 1999. Our motive was to combine the American with the European scene when in the electronic rock genre. We have a much more band oriented way of thinking than a lot of the industrial bands on the European scene. We feel that the creation of the band where we wrote and recorded the Clone your lover album in the US, was a very right thing to do according to our view on things.
It’s a simple concept behind what we do. We have talked this over many times, an we simply all feel the same. We feel alive that everything has a meaning when we take the stage. That is honestly the air we want to breath. Shaking the hands of our biggest fans. Looking them into their eyes saying thank you. The music comes from within. It’s about who we are. It’s melancholy. It’s passion. It’s aggression. It’s fear. It’s love and hate. And it’s sex.
Sometimes different critics doubt that you are able to compose something better than Clone Your Lover – it was really cool thing, but anyhow I suppose, not the only which reached the first chart positions. What are the new songs you make stake, count on? And what do you recommend to listen firstly if someone decides to be introduced into your music?
I don’t know. I really couldn’t care less. We have been in this business to know better than the ones who judge us. We believe in what we do and listen to what our most dedicated and devoted fans have to say. Of course it hurts if someone just gives us shit in the press. But you know. Everyone have their opinion and you can’t please them all. If you take these things too seriously you get paranoid before you know it. I believe Sinners International was a really good album which contained everything a good ZMR album should. The fact that we recorded, produced and mixed it ourselves makes me really proud. Especially when knowing that the three previous albums were very expensive to make. Right now we are in the studio trying to top this. I have a truly great feeling about this next one. I feel it’s something special in the making.
For the new listener I think “Clone Your Lover”, “Houses of Cards”, “Dr Online”, “Cupola”, “Stop the Noise”, “Doppelganger I Love You” and “Ammonite” would be a good start.
What is more main for you – industrial or metal aspect of music? How you find the harmony between guitars and electro?
We love this crossover style that we are into. We have one leg in each camp plus the fact that our hearts belong to bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure and Kraftwerk. In my eyes it’s a perfect mix of it all. Metal is something we didn’t grow up with, but has come to us later in life. We kind of discovered it through bands like Nirvana, Fugazi and Soundgarden in the early 90’s.
Like I said it’s important for us be a band. Our goal is to blend the organic with the mechanical feel. The essence of this lies in drums, guitars, bass, synth and vocals. It all plays a vital part in the sound of ZMR.
What do you think about playing your songs at discotheques?
I love this. I know these ain’t no regular discos and that’s why I think it’s really cool. The feeling of seeing a lot of people in hot outfits dancing to your shit is pretty damn cool.
But apart from a lot of other bands in our genre, we don’t make music for it to be played in these clubs. We usually picture a live setting where we are on stage having a crowd in our attention when we write our music. We actually compose a lot of our music for people hearts more than their heads is you know what I mean.
I’ve read your interview for one Russian magazine – and it’s very interesting where my colleague found such personal information about band members? For example about families and the color of the house. Are you always so frank? Maybe you can tell what is your favorite music, what do you think about President Medvedev, have you tried Russian vodka and what do you plan to do in Moscow before and after the concert?
Hmm…well we believe in honesty and we are not hiding our personas in any way. And we are certainly not trying to disconnect ourselves from our fans. Well I already mentioned a few of my faves when it comes to music. But here’s a few more then: David Sylvian, Interpol. Dead can dance, Nine Inch nails, Deftones and Neil Young. You know it’s quite funny. Whereas Putin got a lot of international publicity, Medvedev for sure doesn’t seem to be the guy in the spotlight over here. I rarely read about him in the papers, and he’s not to often in the news on TV either. Kind of weird I don’t know. But then again there seems to be so much news from all over the globe these days concerning crises, catastrophes and tragedy. So the competition is grand.
And what you plan to perform at the Moscow concert? Can you discover any secrets within this gig?
Well at least I’m aware of that we are not able to bring the whole set up for the Sinners International tour since we have a fly-in. But anyone coming to a ZMR show knows that we put up an intense and energetic show no matter what we have in the back. We simply love to perform and I think everyone coming will notice that. This have been a dream for ZMR since day one coming to Russia and play. We are so excited that I’m having trouble finding the words describing it. What I can promise is that our Russian fans will get the exclusive premiere of some of the new songs we are working on as we speak.
And the last – what can you wish to your fans, waiting for your concert in Moscow?
Dress up. Scream loud. You will get paid by a ZMR special. Can’t wait meeting up with our Russian devotees. After the show we will take our time saying hi to everyone showing up. Giving out hugs and taking personal photos. That is a promise.
Respect!
