Rage

To be continued...

Prologue
Rage
Your drummer André Hilgers had mentioned the "Strings To A Web" as the album which will show the listener various characters and faces. Could you please tell in greater detail what are the listeners to expect from your new album?

He’s right. In fact this album is the best what Rage can and want to play now. All the sides of our music are shown there, here the heavy metal is adjoins with the orchestral compositions.

On the “Speak of the dead" album there was a present for Russian fans, which was a song “Twilight” with Russian lyrics. Why didn’t you do anything of the kind on the “Strings to a web” album?

The thing is that the composition “Twilight” was recorded not only in Russian but also in Japanese, Spanish and German. We made a present for our fans world-wide.But Peavy has certain difficulties with singing in various languages. This was a single experiment and currently we don’t plan to sing in any other language than English. Nevcertheless this language is understood all over the world. I think when we’ll be touring in Russia -and I plan giving concerts in Moscow and St. Petersburg- we will translate some song in Russian by that time.

And when are you planning to visit us?

I can’t say for sure at the moment. Currently I’m busy with preparation for the concerts. I would be glad if could come in April, because in March we’re beginning our World Tour from Europe, in April we’re going to Asia then we’re planning to show up in Brazil. Mexico and America. The problem is that it’s not that easy to organize everything that’s why I don’t know any exact dates.

With what is the mess with the organization of Russian concerts mostly connected?

It’s hard to mention any definite reason, but the organization of concert tour and the realese of the promo-album in Russia is always a headache. That's why it’s me who does everything. I like touring in Russia and hearing familiar native voices. And God grant everything will go well with the tour this year as well.

How does the accomplished album differ from initial vision? Did you succeed in bringing about the initial ideas?

In our case the released album and the initial idea don’t have any differences – everything turned out to be as we plane
Rage
d it. We are content with the results. All the recordings are perfect. The album was created very fast and the arrangements have hit the mark. It’s our record – we have recorded an album only after 3 weeks of hard work. Certainly the opinions will differ^ someone will like it more, someone will not, but this work is quite valuable because the band is in the search for the new sounding and does not repeat the old one. We always play what we feel at the moment, what we want to play and what we like to play.

After the release of the "Strings To A Web” the listeners began speaking that the group is now on the cross-roads, because it includes old Rage and new Rage. To which kind of sounding are you going to stick in future?

So many men so many minds.. Rage doesn’t pay attention to any opinion. We have a lot of fans all over the world. People rejoice at the concerts and buy albums. If anyone doesn’t like it it’s their private affair. And the fact that Rage doesn’t sound like at the times of the first or the second album is totally clear. We write about the things we love and about what we feel at this definite moment. Rage lives in the present and in the future. And it’s impossible to say what the band will be recording next year. we shall see what we shall see

The heart and the zest of the new album is the 16-minute-long track "Empty Hollow”. Why did you chose such an unusual length of the composition?

Rage has already recorded several similar compositions during it’s existence. We like it and if we like it – we do it.

With which symphonic orchestra did you cooperate?

Last time we’ve been cooperating with one orchestra from Byelorussia. They accompany us on tour and during concerts and
they’re involved in recording all our last albums. They’re our friends and that’s why it’s very easy to work with them. Their performance is just perfect.

Many fans compare the intro of “Empty Hollow" with the track “Inferno” by Lacrimosa. What is your attitude towards this band? In their time they also cooperated with the symphonic orchestra during the recording of the album “Elodia”.

Tilo Wolf is a good friend of mine. I used to help Lacrimosa with the recording of their orchestral parts. Now i can’t remember how “Inferno” sounds
Rage
but i don’t think that our is in any way similar to it! Nobody tried to copy anything and actually I just can't imagine what in common between those tracks could be found.

Do you wish to make some project in cooperation with Tilo Wolf?

We don’t have such plans so far. Both we and Tilo have enough of own work to do, But if there’s such opportunity we’ll be eager to make something like that.

Which German composers could you mark out?

I think Wagner is the most interesting one because he had created a certain german image in the music. But I certainly mean Richard Wagner, not Peavy Wagner. Though Peavy has also made his contribution, But not to the classical music but to metal.

Do you plan to make kind of covers on any pieces by this composer and to include them into melodies played by Rage?

No , I don’t think so.

On which composition of the album are you planning to shoot a video?

We don’t have such plans at the moment because the concert DVD is enclosed to the new albumand I think there will be enough video material for our fans.

Who designed the album cover? Do you still cooperate with Anthony Clarckson? What does the spider on the cover mean?

The new album cover was made by Thiomas Everald, our good friend, with whom we have already been cooperating for 2 years. It’s far easier to work with someone who is nearby than with a person with whom you communicate on the Internet.

To what extend are you active on the Internet? What is your attitude towards the piracy and to downloading of the music on the Internet? Will Rage ever upload their album on the Net and let the listeners pay for listening to it the sum of money they asses this or that composition?

I think it’s possible only in the very far future. My attitude towards piracy is negative. And if the CD's won't be sold anymore the music will soon disappear. The bands will lose the possibility to be recorded in the studios. This is especially true about the young musicians.

Victor, you have a huge musical experience. You work as a producer and the tutor of other bands? -With whom is it easier to work with: with the Russian bands or
Rage
with the European ones?

I’ve been doing it regularly for about 10 years. Currently I am a producer of a band from Krasnoyarsk. The guys were on tour with us and now they’re preparing their album, which would be released on April 16th world-wide. I generally keep in touch with many bands and always try to help in organizing concerts and tours. As far as the nationality is concerned, it doesn’t matter. I enjoy working with interesting musicians. The main thing is that they want to achieve something and their creative work should be interesting. When Rage come to Russia and we have a free day I always offer my assistance to the beginners with great pleasure.

Are you regulary cooperating with the band Kipelov? What’s going on now?

No, we haven’t worked together for quite a long time. There was cooperation during one tour and futher work together wasn’t planned. I have never been a member of the band Kipelov, only an invited guest musician for recording an album and on tour.

Is that true that you will be an invited guest on a new album of "VAN CANTO"?

We have met in the studio where we did recording. I was invited to take part in recording because Van Canto have never used guitars in their songs. It was a funny experience.

Would Rage like to do something for the charity? And if yes how will it look like?

Oh yes! We regularly play the concerts and take part in the festivals which help various organizations. Now there'll be a charity concert in Vienna to help the ill children. Also i'm conducting the recording of talented ill children in the studio.

What is the essence of musician’s power? Why does they lead crowds of thousands people?

It’s hard to say why? I have never thought about that. Perhaps such person has a very strong will and believes in what he does. One of the conditions is that you should be honest towards yourself and towards the other people and live by what you do. People like frankness on the stage and in life.

Could you say something to your fans. In what mood are they have to be at starting listening to your album?

Oh! Everybody listens to it in a different way. Someone does it when they feel lonely, someone –when they’re happy and have drunk some beer, someone – while driving a car, someone during some hard blows of the life. To each his own. The only thing I can say is - we have done our best and we have straight-out made what could and what we feel. I hope to see al the rage fans in April. We’ll have a totally new set-list which will suit everybody!
