Morgoth

Sometimes they are back

Prologue
In recent years ominous cemetery of Death Metal increasingly elicits from its gloomy bowels once deceased heroes of past years. Some years ago, the ground under one of the gravestones of restless graveyard began to stir again, and deadly darkness showed to our world Morgoth, which returned from the dead. Back in the days this band stood at the origins of European death metal. Having played a number of shows at metal festivals in Europe and releasing an excellent CD/DVD compilation "Cursed to Live" in 2012, at the moment the band completes the long awaited new album. Well, sometimes “they” are really back… I propose to attention of all "die hard" fans of old school death metal interview with Morgoth's frontman Mark Grewe, who succinctly answered all questions relating to the current situation in the band.
Morgoth
Hello Marc! Congratulations on your return to activity! So, I think first of all Morgoth fans be interested to know about progress of work on a new album.

Thank You! We are working very hard. So far we have like 12 songs written and we will enter the Studio in May to record three songs for a very special 7 inch recording

How does it feel working on a new stuff as part of Morgoth after such a long break?

Well, I would say it´s a struggle but it is also very pleasing to
Morgoth
work on the new material. We needed some time to find us again. But the material is stronger than ever!

As Frank Zappa once said, “Talking about music is like dancing about architecture”. But, nevertheless, if possible, describe your new music stuff. Will it be exceptionally in the spirit of old school, or do you aspire to achieve a balance between the old, traditional sound and modern trends?

Frank Zappa was right ;-) But if I would resume it now, we have our history covered up pretty well, from the rudim
Morgoth
ents of OLD School but also not denying “Feel Sorry For The Fanatic”… Mainly it’s catchy, brutal and just MORGOTH sounding!

Speaking of "Feel Sorry For The Fanatic". As everyone knows, the band broke up shortly after the release of this controversial album. Do not you have a sense of understatement after the collapse in ‘98, a sense of unrealized potential?

The music we did on that record is still great! Unfortunately our record company expected something else and could not handle our music. It was kind of t
Morgoth
oo early for them… Now they have some experience with that I hope!

How ready were the media for your return to the stage in 2011? They meet you with enthusiasm, or puzzled?

No, I think most of the media appreciated that we came back.

The old Morgoth albums interesting not only to those who caught you in the early 90s, but to young fans too. While you were out of scene, there was a change of generations and today's youth are interested in your music and your future. For you it w
Morgoth
as a surprise? In my opinion, it's a bit strange feeling to discover after a long absence that your old fans are not forgotten you, and even people who during your heyday were still kids also want to see and hear you.

Well, it just tells me, that our music has class. It stands the test of time. I am really happy that also the young kids like our 80ies stuff.

Have you ever felt that to some extent you are a prophet for your fans? You know, some fans write letters try to share with you something intimate, som
Morgoth
ething that is important for them, to ask your advice... Did you have such a situation?

It’s totally ok. Of course I got those letters where people say “This record or vocal line changed my life” that is an honor to me… But I was the same… I am a Fan myself, and I can totally understand that!!!

You know, some of musicians on stage trying to be open to their fans, continuing to be who they are in everyday life. How does it happen with you? Can we say that the person we see on stage is not real Marc Grewe from
Morgoth
everyday life, but your alter ego, a manifestation of the other part of your inner self?

Definitely… I can´t be the way I act on stage all the time. Usually I am very smooth and funny. The “Hate” I feel and have in me come out on stage…with NO Compromise!

I must admit that Morgoth has always been a very charismatic band with a huge charge of certain energy. These characteristics, in addition to music, largely explain the success of Morgoth. What is the secret of this charisma?

I th
Morgoth
ink its honesty. Nothing else is more important!

Back in old days Mille Petrozza rendered a great support and influence on the Morgoth formation, you actively communicated and maintained friendly relations. Do you have kept this connection so far? How often do you communicate?

Well, he is and will be all time influence and a friend. We talk once in a while, but of course it’s not on a daily basis.

In 1995, you recorded the album "Fable Frolic" as part of Swedish death metal ba
Morgoth
nd Comecon. Tell me more about this period of your biography.

That was a great experience to work with Thomas Skogsberg. The band was kind of funny… but not the greatest record I´ve sang on…

Almost from its early days Morgoth is inextricably linked with the label Century Media. This constancy is a rarity. After all, you still have not lost contact with Century Media...?

No, they will release our upcoming single (out this summer). But they also have to prove that they are capable to p
Morgoth
ut enough effort in Morgoth. We made the label big in the first years… I know they know that and will do all for us to make us happy!

Last summer Morgoth played a gig on Ukrainian Festival Metal Heads Mission. For the band it was the first visit in ex-Soviet Union. What feelings you experienced in this regard? What you liked and did not like?

The Fans were amazing – absolutely dedicated Metal Heads! The poorness of the people was a shock to all of us!!

Given that the name of the group is the creation of Tolkien's mythology, I cannot help but ask: do you still have interest in the works of the famous professor? Do you follow the screen version of his works in recent years, by Peter Jackson?

Well, to me the Lord Of The Rings was a passion to read when I was 14-15 years. I dived into that cosmos… The Hollywood stuff is good, but not, what I had in mind when I read it.

Which books do you like to read in your spare time now? Can you name your favorite ones?

I still like the classics like Franz Kaffkas “Das Schloss”, reading that right now, Thomas Mann, but also biographies of all kind.

Well, a few words to complete this interview. Maybe something left unsaid...

I really hope that the situation in Ukraine is going to be solved. May all the people in Ukraine and Russia live a peaceful life!
