Necromantia

We always made music for the few

Prologue
Necromantia is a real cult! This group not only stood at the origins of the Greek extreme metal, but in general is one of the first groups of the second wave of Black Metal. Such albums as “Crossing the Fiery Path” and “Scarlet Evil Witching Black” with its innovative approach have a special place in Black Metal Chronicles. The sound of Necromantia is built on distorted bass guitars. In addition, this project has always featured a deep occult concept. And this is real philosophy, not fake tinsel. Since the beginning of the 00s, the group’s activity has not been regular, and for the last 10 years almost nothing has been heard about Necromantia. So I decided to find The Magus – the founder and the main driving force of Necromantia, to find out the reason for such a long silence, and what is happening with the band. The Magus is not the most verbose companion for sure, but still his laconic answers shed some light in the darkness that envelops the name Necromantia.
Necromantia
The last to date full length album by Necromantia “The Sound of Lucifer Storming Heaven” was released in 2007. What is the reason for such a long pause?

Τhe band is actually in hibernation. We have not split up but we are not active either. Various work and family obligations have prevented us to invest the proper time and soul in order to create. But you never know what the future will bring...

There are several compilations in the Necromantia discography containing unrealized songs. Perhaps there was a sense not to include all of these songs in these compilations, but “to audit” and use some of this stuff for the new album?

No. If it is to make a new album it will be completely new material, otherwise does not make any sense at all...

Necromantia is not the easiest thing to understand and requires a certain “level of training” of the listener. Not many people are willin
Necromantia
g to delve into this kind of music. Is it hard for you to find your listener?

We always made music for the few... Aristocratic Black Metal... We never intended to appeal to the masses or get rich by the band. We made music for ourselves. To quench our personal thirst and drive for dark, diabolical music. To express our inner-demon self. The ones who follow us are like minded.

You’re one of the few who stood at the very beginning of the Hellenic extreme scene. Today many groups say that this scene has influenced them a lot. However, this is a paradox: some bands that admit this influence are more successful and popular now than the Hellenic groups that inspired them! How can you explain this? Don't you think that is not very fair?

What do you mean successful? Commercially? Do they sell more albums etc.? Sure they can. We never give a damn about sales and popularity, we never pursued it. I am sure that they are bands who are
Necromantia
influenced by our music and they are pretty known and successful because that was their vision and they follow it as they see fit and rightly done so... But ours was never that.

Emotions and mind – what is primary for you in music? Please describe the stages of your creative process.

First always come the lyrics. They determine the whole atmosphere and feeling of the song. The music tries to build upon them. Like a movie. Each of our song tells a story and we always try to have the music create images of that story in the soul of the listener.

How much do negative emotions inspire you when writing music?

All kinds of emotion inspire my music. NECROMANTIA's music was always emotional and built with the purpose of creating mental images and emotions. Whether it be wrath or hate, fear, despair, satisfaction, lust, misery, joy… everything.

There is an opinion that th
Necromantia
ere are more shadows during the day than in the night time, so there is more dark at the daylight, than light at night time. In general, darkness as an antipode of light is considered as the center of evil and negative, it is destructive in itself. But you take inspiration in the darkness. Thus, darkness can be creative, so – In fact positive. What do you think about it?

We are getting into deep philosophical waters here which cannot be analyzed in a music magazine. BUT for me Darkness is the creative AND destructive force in the universe. Most great things come through struggle, fight and pain... Light is the force where you enjoy what Darkness made...

What do you think, chaos and orderliness are cyclical phenomena that replacing each other? Or is orderliness a random phenomenon, part of chaos because of its randomness?

Chaos reforms and re-arrange order. Constantly. This is why the world is always in a constant flux

In your interview for the Belarusian “M” magazine (in 2002) you said that “over the next decade there will be a global change in our world, events that will turn everything upside down”. You said you would be involved in this too… The world has really changed a lot since then. Did you talk about this change then? Have your expectations come true?

Hmm I never said which my expectations were… But think about it: how is the world now compared to 2002? In the years to come everyone's life will be dependent and controlled digitally through their phones... even if they think they “chose” they will not...

Working on the book “Non Serviam” Sakis Tolis and Dayal Patterson were able to bring together the classic line-up of Rotting Christ: Tolis brothers, Jim Mutilator and you. I think that this book inspired many people to look deeper at the Hellenic scene, having felt its sincerity and authenticity. Tell me, how do you assess
Necromantia
your path and how do you see your place in the history of the Hellenic metal underground? Do you feel pride?

Pride? I would not say so. I feel good that my work is appreciated and admired though. I know my place in history and it feels good to see that others acknowledge it as well. I also think that the Greek scene has evolved and gave birth to some great bands after us. Being an influence to some of them is an honor.
