Finland's NEVER STOP THE SADNESS Release New Single "Go Gently, Swan, Into That Dark Water" Featuring AMORPHIS Vocalist TOMI JOUTSENFinland's Never Stop The Sadness, signed to Lifeforce Records, may be most aptly described as death-doom, or perhaps a union of funeral doom intertwined with the melancholic gothic strains reminiscent of the mournful dirges of Type O Negative. These melancholic odysseys are riddled with unexpected detours, like the spectral echoes of vintage synthesizers woven into the tapestry of sound. Every composition resonates in a mournful abyss of down-tuned melancholy, entwined with themes of demise, the passage beyond, the nether realms, sorrow, longing, and the lamentations that shadow all things grim.
"Go Gently, Swan, Into That Dark Water" is the band's second single, featuring none other than Amorphis frontman Tomi Joutsen on guest vocals. It is available on streaming platforms found here.
Check out the band's debut single / lyric video, "The Land Of Long Shadows", below.

EDGE OF SANITY / NIGHTINGALE Catalogue Reissue Campaign Announced; New Single/Video For EDGE OF SANITY’s “Twilight" (Remix 2024) Available NowCentury Media Records and InsideOutMusic are pleased to announce the upcoming “First Chapter” of a comprehensive catalogue re-issue campaign for legendary and groundbreaking death metallers Edge Of Sanity, as well as versatile prog/hardrock outfit Nightingale, who were both fronted by Swedish vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and acclaimed metal producer Dan Swanö (Opeth, Katatonia, Dissection, etc.).
Long out of print, never previously available in certain formats or in any properly re-worked re-issue version, as well as enhanced by tons of exciting extra-material, these definitive re-issues come efficiently all re-mastered by Swanö himself and partly even shine in a new light via additional remix efforts as bonus.
Dan Swanö - who has not only had a long tradition of co-operating with mix/mastering roles for many CMR artists like Asphyx, Skeletal Remains or Insomnium, but also last became musically active in metal with the band Witherscape via CMR (Two albums and a mini album between 2013 and 2016) and also released his latest Nightingale album Retribution in 2014 on the IOM label - checked in with the following comment about the starting re-issue campaign:
“It’s hard to describe in words exactly how excited we all are about these re-issues for both Edge Of Sanity and Nightingale. It’s incredible that these albums are finally available again, with the attention to detail they always deserved and with a label like Century Media Records / InsideOutMusic behind us, we know that these releases will turn out amazing in the end and not be so hard to get a hold of like they used to be, and hopefully reach a new audience as well as the old!
"Personally, I always hoped that there would come a time when I could revisit all these albums and have the time and budget to remaster or even remix them and be able to present them the way I wish they had sounded all along.
"A lot of time, work and money have been put into making sure we have the best possible version of the original artwork to work with, and we searched everywhere for photographs and memorabilia. Endless hours have been spent talking and writing about these albums, resulting in super detailed liner notes for the Deluxe CD edition. Also, the lyrics have been double and tripled check, and it was quite amusing to see just how wrong most of them were both in the original booklets and online. The lyrics are in the booklets and on the inner sleeve of every re-issue!
"I wholeheartedly hope you appreciate these new, improved and definitive versions of the entire Edge Of Sanity and Nightingale back catalogues!”

MY DYING BRIDE Release "Her Dominion" Single And Lyric Video; A Mortal Binding Album Out NowBritish death-doom legends, My Dying Bride, are proud to announce that their 15th studio album, A Mortal Binding, has been released today. The Yorkshire based sextet have also revealed their final album single, "Her Dominion", which is accompanied by an evocative lyric video created by Tommy Antonini.
My Dying Bride's Andrew Craighan commented, "The video very closely represents the downward spiral the song itself is portraying. A twisted internal division masquerading as beauty. Enjoy the darkness."
A Mortal Binding, the much-anticipated follow-up to The Ghost of Orion (2020) finds the Yorkshire-based quintet delighting in anxiety, loss, and toil to resplendent effect. From the raw distress of "Her Dominion" and twisted horror of "Thornwyck Hymn" to the funerary violins of the 11-minute monolith "The Apocalyptist" and the classic-feeling "The 2nd Of Three Bells", A Mortal Binding is pinnacle My Dying Bride. If Songs Of Darkness, Words Of Light (2004) elevated the band to new heights and A Map Of All Our Failures (2012) expanded upon the group’s mid-tens grandeur, then A Mortal Binding stages My Dying Bride’s next exultant phase of elegiac misery.
My Dying Bride hired The Ghost of Orion studio wizard Mark Mynett to produce, mix, and master A Mortal Binding. The group holed up at Mynett’s Mynetaur Productions (Paradise Lost, Rotting Christ) in Manchester, UK, where they tracked the album consecutively from July to September 2023.
A Mortal Binding formats:
- CD jewelcase
- Vinyl 2LP gatefold - green
- Vinyl 2LP gatefold - red w/ black smoke
- Vinyl 2LP gatefold - clear w/ black smoke

A Mortal Binding tracklisting:

"Thornwyck Hymn"
"The 2nd Of Three Bells"
"Unthroned Creed"
"The Apocalyptist"
"A Starving Heart"
"Crushed Embers"
"The 2nd Of Three Bells" video:
"Thornwyck Hymn" video:
For over three decades, My Dying Bride from West Yorkshire have been the voice of the hopeless and broken, combining haunting sounds with crushing misery and melancholy. With their signature sound they've shaped the doom metal scene like barely any other act and integrated both soft violin melodies and violent death metal growls into their music, whilst always staying strictly loyal to themselves. And since the early Nineties, the band's masterminds and founding members Andrew Craighan and Aaron Stainthorpe forged beautiful grief into studio albums with songs of epic length. As My Dying Bride edge past their 33rd year, they’re aging gracefully, remaining as vital and heart-wrenching as ever. The flower withers once more on My Dying Bride’s new record A Mortal Binding.
My Dying Bride are:
Aaron Stainthorpe - vocals
Andrew Craighan - guitars
Lena Abé - bass
Shaun MacGowan - keyboards / violin
Neil Blanchett - guitars
Dan Mullins - drums 3

ZOLTAN BATHORY: Why FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH Keeps Working With Producer KEVIN CHURKOIn a new interview with Hear 2 Zen magazine, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH guitarist Zoltan Bathory spoke about the band's continued collaboration with Kevin Churko, the Canadian record producer/engineer and songwriter who currently lives in Las Vegas, where he works out of his private studio, The Hideout Recording Studio. Asked what it is that Kevin brings to FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH when they work together, Zoltan said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "So a producer — a producer, sound engineer; especially he's a producer-sound engineer combo, so he's excellent on both. So there are a couple of things that you have to think about when you're working with a producer. One of them is how much this producer is affecting your music. As a musician, this is your music, this is your creation. You wanna bring something that you meant to bring to the table. And so that means it has to pass to the producer, and the producer has to get the best performances out of you. Not to change the music, not to change who you are and what you and what you meant to say. So that's one element that it has to be — the throughput has to be natural. And then also be the mitigator between bandmembers. So a producer is also somewhat of a psychologist who can deal with all the bandmembers. It's a rock band; everybody's crazy. And then if you have disagreements, he would be the deciding factor. If you disagree on the music, then you ask him, like, 'So what do you think? What do you prefer?' So that has to be there."
He continued: "But, really, why we stay with Kevin, why we always work with him is because a producer intuitively has to know where would you go as a musician. So, to give you an actual physical example of that. For example, let's say you drop a drum beat and I have to record a guitar riff to this drum beat. And what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna record this guitar riff a hundred times. And then from that, all the takes, we're gonna see which one was the right one. And it's various elements. It's not just a precision, like how precise the riff was. Does it have that life? Does it have that star quality? Does it have that extra thing about this riff? And so let's say you recorded a hundred riffs and from the hundred riffs, there would be, like, seven, eight, nine of them that had the magic. And I know which one that was, because I can listen back and say, 'Okay, number seven, number 11 from the takes and number 24' — I know which one was the one that's magical. And he intuitively knows that. I don't have to tell him. He will pick exactly the same one. So that means, to me, that he hears the magic. He knows exactly what I would pick, so that basically speeds up the process. And we're just easily working together because he intuitively know which one to pick. Same with the vocal takes, same with everything. I think that's the most important part where, okay, he's a family member and he picks the right pieces. The flow is just perfect. It's like another bandmember. "
Zoltan added: "What makes a good band and what makes a good bandmember is when you can play together and everybody naturally goes to where they should. It has to be the same in the producer, that he naturally should pick the things and favor the things that you would. And he's that guy. So it makes no sense to us to go somewhere else. His mixes are loud and punchy. Why would you change something that enabled us to express ourselves the most efficient, proficient and professional way. It sounds great. His records, other producers, other artists try to recreate that stuff. I always like that stuff. And I read it in articles, and people talk about, like, 'Man, the guitar sound or the vocal sound on the FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH record,' studio professionals talking about that. I was thinking, like, 'Man, yeah, exactly. That's why we work with him.'"
Asked if FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH is going to work with Kevin again on the next studio album, Zoltan said: "That's the plan. We'll see when we get to the point of doing the next record. We started kind of working on some stuff. We have a whole year of touring ahead of us, so we'll see when we get to it."
FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH recently announced a headlining U.S. tour this summer with support from MARILYN MANSON and SLAUGHTER TO PREVAIL. The trek will kick off on August 2 in Hershey, Pennsylvania and run through September 19 when it will conclude in Houston, Texas.
Prior to the U.S. run, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH will embark on a tour of Europe in the spring for more stadium dates with METALLICA on the latter act's "M72" world tour in addition to headlining shows with special guest ICE NINE KILLS and select appearances at major festivals.
FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH is continuing to tour in support of its ninth album, "AfterLife" which was released in August 2022 via Better Noise.
On April 5, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH released the digital deluxe edition of "AfterLife", featuring the original 12 tracks recorded with the band's longtime producer Kevin Churko (OZZY OSBOURNE) in addition to four bonus tracks: three acoustic versions of the album's songs "The End", "Judgement Day" and "Thanks For Asking" plus a brand new song, "This Is The Way", featuring the late rapper DMX.

Finland’s SHADE OF SORROW To Release Upon The Fields Of Grief In JuneAnticipated by many after the three promising singles self-released by the band, Finland’s Shade Of Sorrow have announced the street date of the forthcoming debut with M-Theory Audio.
June 28 marks the release of Upon The Fields Of Grief. Featuring striking cover art by Gogo Melone (Kamelot, Ablaze My Sorrow, Mariana’s Rest) the album, available on CD and limited edition (300 onyx marble) colored vinyl, is available for preorder here.
Shade Of Sorrow started in 2017 when founder Mika Kankainen, former drummer of Soul Terror and Warceremony, was writing material and playing all the instruments himself, including drums, bass, guitar, keyboard, while also handling vocals thus showcasing his immense talent and virtuosity. These songs started to catch the attention of other musicians and producers who in 2020 encouraged Mika to deliver on his promise and he began to record the material to share with the world. A year later digital singles and accompanying music videos started to premiere, each self-released, including “No Return” and “Fabricated Hope,” followed by “Meteor” in 2022 which gained further attention including that of M-Theory Audio, who signed Shade Of Sorrow in 2023.
Since Mika has finished writing and co-producing a full album, ‘Upon the Fields of Grief,’ with Esa Uusimaa (Crowen, Rain of Acid, Wolfheart), who also mixed, and Saku Moilanen (Before the Dawn, Aeonian Sorrow, Red Moon Architect) with vocal production by Juha Kylmanen (To/Die/For, For My Pain…). Mastering was handled by Juho Raiha (Before the Dawn, Swallow the Sun). Now that this epic work is complete Mika is ready to share his bleak visions and strong performances with the world this summer.
”Upon The Fields Of Grief takes you to my mindset and perspective, where I see the world slicing its wrists and drowning us all. It’s a personal survival kit from this absolute darkness that we call life,” explains Mika Kankainen. “The bitter vinegar of endless disappointments and personal hate, disgust and aggression coming 100% from the heart. Black n’ dark is not enough to describe this macabre rollercoaster that this album gives you. It’s a one-man manifestation from the deepest northern darkness. Prepare to experience the coldest wind and grief from the north. From Finland with hate.”
More new music and album information on Shade Of Sorrow and the upcoming album revealed in the months leading up to release.

GATECREEPER Streaming New Single "Masterpiece Of Chaos"Arizona’s death-metal forerunners, Gatecreeper, recently announced their pivotal new album, Dark Superstition, due May 17 via Nuclear Blast - their label debut. Their sprawling third full-length is more concise, melodic, and memorable than anything they’ve ever done. It sees vocalist Chase H. Mason, guitarists Eric Wagner and Israel Garza, drummer Metal Matt Arrebollo and bassist Alex Brown—carving out their own path.
Gatecreeper’s searing new single, “Masterpiece Of Chaos”, evokes their tried and true, singular death metal style.
Vocalist Chase Mason tells, “'Masterpiece Of Chaos' is a nightmarish vision of a broken mirror with an ominous creature that lives within the fragmented web of glass. It sonically contrasts and compliments the more melodic approach we took to some of the other songs."
Stream the track here, and below:
Dark Superstition deals with the supernatural, divination, fear of the unknown, and trust in magic or chance. “Many of the songs incorporate supernatural ideas with my own experiences,” Mason says. “But the title itself is a reference to the Superstition Mountains in our home state of Arizona. It’s a beautiful mountain range surrounded by tragedy and legends of hidden fortune.”
The album’s intricate lead single, "The Black Curtain" leans heavily in a rock direction, and embodies Dark Superstition’s themes with a tale of divination. “It’s about being trapped between living and dying,” Mason tells. “A soul trapped in purgatory begging to be brought back by a supernatural force.” “The Black Curtain” is available today alongside a video directed by Max Moore. Listen to the song here, and watch the video below.
Dark Superstition moves swiftly from one brutal soundscape to the next, each sonic structure evoking its own emotion and landscape. To help perfect their game this round, Gatecreeper joined forces with drummer / songwriter Fred Estby, of Swedish death metal titans Dismember, whose influences can be heard throughout the album. Dark Superstition was recorded at God City Studios in Salem, MA with Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou, who also mixed the album.

I thought the opening riff was really cool and I played the music track a few times in my studio and came up with the idea for the song and lyrics pretty quick. The band then demoed the track and we all decided it was a great song for the album. The video and single came out amazing and we are extremely happy with the way the visual idea and track came together."
Get the single here, and watch the official video below.
Derek Davis’ back story on the lyrics, "The song is about a lost girl with destructive mental problems. She’s manipulative and vengeful and she is a created AI Robot! She’s not happy unless she is destroying people, relationships and eventually the world. She is a Sci-Fi “WRECKING MACHINE” come to life!"
Brian Basher from BraveWords Radio had this to say about the new album, "Too early to spoil it, but I will say two things about the record. IMO, it blows Revelation Highway out of the water and if you like the first two albums you will LOVE"Rome Wasn't Built In A Day."

On Fripp’s drive for excellence, Toyah says: “As someone who has listened to Robert play for 38 years within our house, the intensity of the fingers and the speed of the fingers, and sometimes Robert's playing 11 notes a second. He’ll practice this for four hours a day, and I can tell you sometimes it can be hell. Other times it's an absolute inspiration.”

SUM 41's DERYCK WHIBLEY On Putting The Band To Rest: 'It Was A Tough Decision'In a new interview with Brazil's A Rádio Rock, SUM 41 vocalist Deryck Whibley spoke about the band's decision to call it quits after the completion of the tour in support of SUM 41's latest album, "Heaven :x: Hell". He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "It was a tough decision because I love what I do and I've loved being in this band for almost 30 years. But there comes a point in life where you start asking yourself, 'Is this all I'm ever gonna do? Is there anything else?' And I'll never really know unless I try to go see what else is out there for me. So I knew I had to make this decision at this point, although it was tough."
Asked what he hopes SUM 41's legacy will be, Whibley said: "It's not really up to me and I don't really think about it. I think the music will speak for itself. People will either like it or they won't. It will stand the test of time or it won't."
Regarding what he considers to be the most challenging and most rewarding moments in SUM 41's story, Deryck said: "There's been a lot. Our whole story has been heaven and hell. It's been extreme highs, extreme lows and it's been a long career. So we've gone through ups and downs. I think the most rewarding part about being in this band is having stuck through everything up until this point and just push through all the really hard moments and just kept fighting and just kept going and getting to a point where we're at the best we've ever been, we love each other more than we ever have and everything's just in a great place. So it's a great place to leave it at that."
As previously announced, SUM 41 will make stops in the United States, Japan, Mexico, Germany, Italy, and more, and will perform their largest show to date in front of a sold-out crowd of over 35,000 at Paris La Défense Arena in France later this year before the official Canadian leg of the tour and their final shows as a band in Toronto, Ontario, on January 28 and 30, 2025, at Scotiabank Arena.
Released on March 29 via Rise Records, "Heaven :x: Hell" is the most ambitious album from SUM 41 yet — "Heaven" is 10 tracks of snarling high-energy pop punk, while "Hell" consists of ten heavy metal anthems spiked with fret-burning solos, thrashing riffs, and fist-pumping hooks. The band has been straddling the line of pop-punk and metal for their entire career, and "Heaven :x: Hell" Is a testament to their innovative sound and unmatched skill, proving them as pioneers 27 years after the bands inception.
SUM 41's storied 24-plus-year career includes over 15 million records sold worldwide, multiple Billboard-charting releases, a Grammy Award nomination, two Juno Awards (seven nominations),a Kerrang! Award in 2002, as well as multiple Alternative Press Music Awards.
In September 2023, Whibley was discharged from a hospital after being treated for pneumonia.
Back in 2014, Deryck collapsed in his kitchen and was rushed to the hospital, before doctors revealed his liver and kidneys had failed. He was placed in a coma for a week to help his body detox from alcohol and went on to get sober and lead a healthier lifestyle.

PHIL MOGG Says UFO Is Over: 'It's Come To A Conclusion'In a new interview with Ultimate Classic Rock to promote the 2024 remastered reissue of UFO's 1977 album "Lights Out", UFO frontman Phil Mogg was asked if there is still "more to do" with the band. He responded: "No, no. I think it's come to a conclusion. We did that last U.K. tour in 2019, just before COVID. So that was kind of the end of it, and the time was right."
Mogg suffered a heart attack in August 2022. The now-76-year-old British-born musician was rushed to the hospital where he had two stents implanted into his coronary arteries. This is known medically as a coronary angioplasty and aims to re-open the blocked coronary artery by inserting one or more stents. This helps keep the narrowed artery open.
UFO's farewell tour was scheduled to kick off on October 15, 2022 at the De Casino in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium and run through a final show at the Fuzz Club in Athens, Greece on October 29, 2022.
When the news of Mogg's heart attack was first made public, UFO said in a statement: "On Thursday September 1st, 2022 — after having performed several detailed examinations in the past days — the doctors pronounced a strict performance ban for Mogg until further notice. This is why the entire Last Orders farewell tour, which was supposed to lead across Europe from October 15 to 29, 2022 before ending in Athens, had to be cancelled.
"If and when the tour or — at the very least — individual shows can be made up for, is currently completely unclear and will depend on Mogg's recovery, among other things. His rehabilitation therapy will be starting in about six weeks. According to the doctors, it is not yet possible to give any concrete statements about the duration and scope of the treatment."
In 2021, UFO announced that it would embark on its final tour featuring a series of exclusive concerts in summer 2022 to bid farewell to its fans in style. UFO was scheduled to play the very last concert of in Athens, where the band performed its first show featuring current guitarist Vinnie Moore in February 2004.
When UFO's final concert was first announced, Mogg was anticipating this very special farewell show with mixed feelings, while also very much looking forward to UFO once again meeting their extensive fan base between summer and autumn 2022.
Mogg, who turned 76 earlier this week, said: "After so many years with countless highlights, fantastic experiences and lots of beautiful memories — as well as some difficult moments, naturally — it'll be a worthy finale to say goodbye to your fans in person. I know that there are bound to be some very emotional moments on both sides."
In his original statement announcing UFO's final tour, Mogg said the decision was "a long time coming," adding that while "being out on the road isn't always tremendously luxurious and although the playing is as great as it ever was, the stuff that surrounds it becomes very tiresome. I always told myself that when I reached that stage, I would step down, and that's what I'm going to do. This is the right time for me to quit."
UFO guitarist/keyboard player Paul Raymond died in April 2019. He appeared on more than a dozen of UFO's albums, including "Lights Out" and the live classic "Strangers In The Night".
UFO's most recent lineup included original members Mogg and drummer Andy Parker, as well as Moore, who joined in 2003, and Rob De Luca (bass),a member since 2012.
UFO's latest release was the 2017 covers collection "The Salentino Cuts". 5

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND Pays Tribute To DICKEY BETTS: 'You Will Be Forever Remembered And Deeply Missed'THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND have issued a statement on the passing of the band's founding member Dickey Betts. Dickey died Thursday morning (April 18) at the age of 80. The cause was cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Betts's manager David Spero confirmed to Rolling Stone.
In their statement, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND wrote: "With deep sadness THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND learned today that founding member Dickey Betts has passed away peacefully in his home in Sarasota, Florida, following a period of declining health.
"Dickey wrote quintessential BROTHERS songs including 'Blue Sky', 'Rambling Man', 'Jessica', 'In Memory of Elizabeth Reed' and many others. His extraordinary guitar playing alongside guitarist Duane Allman created a unique dual guitar signature sound that became the signature sound of the genre known as Southern Rock. He was passionate in life, be it music, songwriting, fishing, hunting, boating, golf, karate or boxing. Dickey was all in on and excelled at anything that caught his attention.
"Betts joins his brothers, Duane Allman, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks and Gregg Allman, as well as ABB crew, members Twiggs Lyndon, Joe Dan Petty, Red Dog, Kim Payne and Mike Callahan in that old Winnebago in the sky touring the world taking their music to all who will listen.
"Our condolences to his immediate family Donna, Duane & Lisa, Christy & Frank, Jessica, and Kim.
"Play on Brother Dickey, you will be forever remembered and deeply missed.
"ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, Family, and Crew".
Betts released several acclaimed solo albums in the 1970s and 1980s and was involved in THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND reunion in 1989 following a seven-year hiatus.
Betts exited THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND in 2000 after a comeback that found the group releasing several acclaimed new studio albums, winning a Grammy for a live performance of "Jessica" and being inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
Before fellow THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND founding member Gregg Allman died in May 2017, he and Betts reconnected, with Dickey later saying: "I'm so glad I was able to have a couple good talks with him before he passed. In fact I was about to call him to check and see how he was when I got the call."
In 2018, Dickey suffered from a mild stroke and survived an unexpected head injury. He later underwent surgery to relieve swelling in the brain.
Betts was reportedly the inspiration for the character played by Billy Crudup in Cameron Crowe's 2000 film "Almost Famous".
"Crudup's look, and much more, is a tribute to Dickey," Crowe told Rolling Stone in 2017. "Dickey seemed like a quiet guy with a huge amount of soul, possible danger and playful recklessness behind his eyes. He was a huge presence."

SHINEDOWN's BRENT SMITH Teases Possible JELLY ROLL Collaboration: 'It Might Be In The Works'Renowned vocalist Brent Smith of SHINEDOWN recently joined host Erik Zachary as the latest guest on the "Spout" podcast, where he delved into a plethora of topics ranging from music collaborations to fitness routines and the profound lessons learned from influential women in his life. Watch the full episode below.
During the podcast, Smith revealed the exciting possibility of a collaboration with country star Jelly Roll, stating, "100 percent. It might be in the works. I mean, I don't know. If I say it, it's probably going to happen."
Speaking about Jelly Roll, Smith expressed deep admiration, highlighting their mutual respect and affection, saying, "We just have a mutual love for one another and just care so deeply about who he is as an individual and his story."
Smith went on to say: "This man [Jelly Roll] is the real thing on so many different levels; [he] could not be a more genuine individual; talented as all get out. I remember when, you know, we brought him out with us in 2022 on tour, there were people that were like, who is, why, like, what is going on here? Who is this? And I'm, like, 'Just get ready, man'... I told him [Jelly Roll] too. I said, 'Man, you are about to get into the most amazing rocket ship that only you can captain.'"
The conversation turned to SHINEDOWN's latest single, "A Symptom Of Being Human", which recently soared to the top of the charts, marking the band's 19th No. 1 single. Reflecting on the song's genesis, Smith shared, "The song came from the fact that we're all a work in progress. You know, we wrote the song in the midst of a pandemic when everybody was going through an array of emotions. People were angry. They were sad. They were lonely. They were frustrated. And a lot of ways symptom was a gift because it kind of utilized us as a vessel so that it could be born."
Smith also touched on the evolving landscape of music genres, and how SHINEDOWN's catalog is now being discovered by younger audiences. "We don't really write music inside of a vacuum, nor do we write in a box," he said. "And what I mean by that is, to us, we're inspired by so many different styles of music and so many different types of prolific songwriters that, go from all sides of the spectrum of music. We don't handcuff ourselves creatively. We never have on any record. So, it's not to us about, it's not a reflection of whether it's pop music, rock music, rap music, country music, metal, however, you want to look at it. It's about all music. And I think that for us too, we've always had a way of discussing the human spirit more than anything in our songs."
Beyond music, Smith, a dedicated fitness enthusiast, offered valuable tips for jump-starting a healthy lifestyle. Recommending a simple-yet-effective starting point, he said, "Go outside in the sunshine and start with a walk...it will change your mood quickly."
Drawing from personal experience, Smith shared his journey towards health and sobriety, crediting his son for catalyzing positive change in his life. "My son saved my life...it was no longer about me," he revealed.
In addition to fitness advice, Smith imparted timeless wisdom inherited from his mother and grandmother. Reflecting on his grandmother's teachings, he shared, "My granny always just told me, she was, like, 'Look, the key to success is to never arrive.' Like, there's always another gear. There's always another level. There's always another mountain to climb. And her whole thing was always like, climb the mountain to the top. It's not about conquering the mountain. It's about climbing that mountain and then finding if you're ready for another challenge go find a bigger mountain. So, it was always about learning from that, you know involving yourself in the experience being a witness to everything around you and being present and listening to people; being understanding of the fact that you know, you want to lead the way, but you also want to lead, you know, lead from the front and try to surround yourself with like-minded people."
The "Spout" podcast can be heard on Spotify, iHeart, Apple Podcast, Amazon Music or any other major podcasting platform.

JACK RUSSELL's Long-Awaited Autobiography, 'The True Tale Of Mista Bone', To Arrive This SummerFormer GREAT WHITE singer Jack Russell's long-awaited autobiography, now titled "The True Tale Of Mista Bone: A Rock + Roll Narrative", will be released this summer via Gatekeeper Press. Penned by author Katelyn Louise "K.L." Doty, it features a sentimental foreword by Lita Ford, with additional commentary from Eric Singer, Eddie Trunk, John Kalodner, Kip Winger and others. The book, with a cover photo by legendary rock photographer Mark Weiss, will be available in paperback, hardcover and e-book form. The exact release date will be announced later this spring.
In a recent interview with George Dionne of KNAC.COM, Russell stated about the status of his autobiography: "A girl named Katelyn Doty is working on it with me. We started writing this together about three years ago, I wanna say. I don't know if it's been that long, but it seems like it. Sorry, Katelyn, if I messed that one up. But we've been working on it for a long time. She's a brilliant writer, just brilliant. She knows how to put pen to paper, I'll tell you — just has a flair for it. I wanted somebody that had finesse with writing, not just, 'One day I was working on my car and then I got oil on me.' I wanted [to] let the pen be the voice."
Asked if he is going to dish any dirt in his autobiography, Jack said: "You know what? I said a few things that some people are gonna lift their eyebrows about, but I pretty much kept most of the dirt under the rug. There's no point in pointing fingers and calling people out on stuff. I mean, everybody's got skeletons in their closet, and probably me more than most. So, what's the point in talking bullshit about other people when you don't really necessarily need to? I don't need to fill up the pages, that's for sure. I've got enough stories without doing that. I think I may even have to do a second book. There's that much involved. I mean, you've got a lot of years of work on the big testimonial."
Back in December 2021, Russell told Tulsa Music Stream that he gets along with Doty, who is Chip Z'Nuff's wife, "like peas and carrots. So it's gonna be a really great book," he added. "What I've read is really great. We've got a lot of people that have done interviews for it. Even [A&R guru] John Kalodner came out of the closet [to be interviewed for it]. No, he didn't come out of the closet — I didn't mean the 'closet' closet."
Russell exited GREAT WHITE in December 2011 after he was unable to tour with the group due a series of injuries, including a perforated bowel and a shattered pelvis. Jack largely blamed these injuries on his alcohol and painkiller addictions as well as the prednisone drug he was prescribed.
Russell sued his onetime bandmates in 2012 over their continued use of the GREAT WHITE name after Jack had taken a leave of absence from the band for medical reasons. A short time later, Russell was countersued by guitarist Mark Kendall, rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Michael Lardie and drummer Audie Desbrow, claiming the vocalist's self-destructive behavior was damaging the GREAT WHITE name (they also alleged he was charging promoters less for his own touring version of GREAT WHITE). The parties settled in July 2013 without going to trial, with Russell now performing as JACK RUSSELL'S GREAT WHITE while the others are continuing as GREAT WHITE.
Russell previously discussed his book in a 2016 interview, saying: "I'm just dumping everything in this book. And there might be a couple of lawsuits out of it, I would imagine. I'm gonna have to have my lawyers check it out before I release it. But, I mean, I don't really think that's gonna happen. 'Cause the book is about myself and what I've [gone through] and not so much about other people. But there are gonna be spots where somebody might raise an eyebrow and go, 'Hmmm….' It's gonna make some people upset. But it'll make more people laugh. If you're the butt of the joke, that's just the way it goes. [Laughs]"
Six years ago, Russell said that one of the main reasons he was writing a book was "because I want people to know that no matter how far down the ladder you fall you can always climb back up. You don't have to stay down," he told Daily Boom. "Whether you have a drug an alcohol problem or anything else for that matter, you can pull yourself out of it. You can accomplish so much in life if you just believe in it and visualize it. Nothing happens by chance, and I believe that everyone that you meet has some sort of message for you, if you listen closely enough. It might be a stranger that says something random to you that you shrug off, but if you sit and think about it, maybe they said something that you were supposed to hear. You just never know when you are being used as that voice of encouragement for someone else. I don't believe that anything happens by coincidence; it's all for a reason, both good and bad. Life isn't random; it's very well choreographed and we're here to learn."

MY DYING BRIDE Guitarist Addresses Concert Cancelations: 'We Have Some Live Problems Which We're Massaging'In a new interview with Lindsay C of This Day In Metal, Andrew Craighan, the guitarist of English doom metal pioneers MY DYING BRIDE, addressed the recent announcement that he and his bandmates were canceling all of their previously announced 2024 tour dates, including an appearance at this year's Maryland Deathfest. He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "Well, Maryland Deathfest, firstly, shouldn't have said that, and they know that and have since apologized — well, privately apologized.
"We have some live problems, which we're — how best to say it? — massaging, I would say. They're not insurmountable. I don't have all the facts just yet, which means I don't wanna blab too much. But we're in talks with everybody who has the facts, and we will be putting out a statement, basically, that either will explain or at least calm people down as to what's going on.
"It's all a bit weird right now, so it's difficult to talk about — mainly because I don't wanna say anything out of turn and then everything you say will be used in evidence against you and all that," he added.
MY DYING BRIDE will release its 15th studio album, "A Mortal Binding", on April 19 via Nuclear Blast Records.
"A Mortal Binding" is the much-anticipated follow-up to 2019's "The Ghost Of Orion".
MY DYING BRIDE hired "The Ghost Of Orion" studio wizard Mark Mynett to produce, mix, and master "A Mortal Binding". The group holed up at Mynett's Mynetaur Productions (PARADISE LOST, ROTTING CHRIST) in Manchester, U.K., where they tracked the album consecutively from July to September 2023.
For over three decades, MY DYING BRIDE has been the voice of the hopeless and broken, combining haunting sounds with crushing misery and melancholy. With their signature sound they've shaped the doom metal scene like barely any other act and integrated both soft violin melodies and violent death metal growls into their music, while always staying strictly loyal to themselves. And since the early Nineties, the band's masterminds and founding members Andrew Craighan and Aaron Stainthorpe forged beautiful grief into studio albums with songs of epic length. As MY DYING BRIDE edge past their 33rd year, they're aging gracefully, remaining as vital and heart-wrenching as ever.
MY DYING BRIDE is:
Aaron Stainthorpe - vocals
Andrew Craighan - guitars
Lena Abé - bass

Was LITA FORD Really Asked To Play Bass For LED ZEPPELIN? She Sets The Record StraightIn a new interview with Guitar World magazine, Lita Ford was asked about the time in the 1970s when she was supposedly approached by LED ZEPPELIN about possibly playing bass for the band. She said: "THE RUNAWAYS [Lita's then-band] were playing at Gazzarri's or The Starwood [in West Hollywood, California] — I'm having trouble with names because those places aren't there anymore. It was upstairs… yeah, it was the Starwood. It was early RUNAWAYS days — you can tell we were like 17 or something. But Jimmy Page and Robert Plant came to see the show, and THE RUNAWAYS were quite the novelty, being teenage girls that could rip it up, kick ass and rock the house. The places were always packed with fans, and our manager at the time, Kim Fowley, said, 'Okay, girls, gather around and get a picture with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page.' I was scooched in there, like, 'Oh yeah, great!' I grew up listening to them and I was still growing up. Robert Plant said, 'We're looking to replace our bass player, John Paul Jones,' and I thought, 'I'm not hearing this. I refuse to believe that this is really coming out of his mouth.' I thought, 'He's got to be joking,' because John Paul Jones is God on bass, as far as I'm concerned. But that's what he said. And I walked away, just thinking, 'Oh, that was nice. That was nice of him to look at me like that.' In those days a lot of people didn't look at us as musicians because we were female and we were young. They never took us seriously as musicians."
When interviewer Andrew Daly noted that "it's interesting they wanted you to play bass since you're a guitar player," Lita responded: "I got into THE RUNAWAYS because they heard I was a bass player. I had played bass for a few shows in a local band in Long Beach, California, covering for somebody who got sick. Then everyone thought I was a bass player. So, I don't know… but that's what came out of Robert Plant's mouth. And I was, like, 'Nah, he didn't really say that' — but he did."
Back in 2016, Lita offered a slightly different version of what Plant told her some 40 years earlier, telling "Rockin' Metal Revival" about online reports about how she was supposedly asked to play bass for LED ZEPPELIN: "Well, see, there's a misconception there, and the press just takes it out of context to what really happened. And if you read [my] book, the book says all [Plant] really did was ask me if I played bass. He [said], 'You don't play bass, do you?' It's not like he came up and said, 'We want you to play bass for LED ZEPPELIN.' That's not what happened. He'd watched THE RUNAWAYS play — him and Jimmy Page came to a show — and Robert Plant said, 'You don't play bass, do you?' And I said, 'For who?' Because John Paul Jones was one of my favorite bass players ever. And I didn't know what he was talking about. And I thought, 'For who?' It wasn't in my vision there."
That same year, she told Goldmine about her encounter with LED ZEPPELIN: "Well, I loved John Paul Jones and I knew all his bass lines because I can play bass as well as guitar. At that time I knew all of his bass lines. I didn't know they were having trouble in the band. I had no idea. So all Robert Plant said to me was, 'You don't play bass, do you?' That's all he said, and I went, 'For who?' And he kind of looked around the room and I looked around the room and I walked off. First of all, I didn't know they were having trouble and I'm a kid and I'm a chick. I've already got a band that I fit in and I don't think I would have fit in LED ZEPPELIN. People don't believe me and think I'm lying about it, but it did happen."
Ford recently completed work on her long-awaited new album for a tentative late 2024 release. The upcoming follow-up to 2012's "Living Like A Runaway" was once again helmed by guitarist/producer Gary Hoey, who contributes some guitar playing to the disc, alongside the rest of Lita's longtime backing band, consisting of guitarist Patrick Kennison, drummer Bobby Rock and bassist Marty O'Brien.
In May 2022, bassist Marten Andersson (STEELHEART, LIZZY BORDEN, LYNCH MOB) officially joined Lita's touring band. Andersson replaced O'Brien who became the touring bassist for DAUGHTRY.
Ford's last release was 2016's "Time Capsule", a collection of songs that were recorded by Lita in the past, but never before made available.
Eight years ago, Lita released an autobiography, "Living Like A Runaway: A Memoir", via Dey Street Books (formerly It Books),an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. 4
