PORTNOY: It Has Been A Tough Year For Me Watching DREAM THEATER Fans Turning Their Backs On MeMetal Kaoz recently conducted an interview with drummer Mike Portnoy (ADRENALINE MOB, DREAM THEATER, AVENGED SEVENFOLD). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Metal Kaoz: Do you have in mind a release date for the [debut ADRENALINE MOB] album or even a record deal?
Portnoy: We are actually in the process of find a record label to release it. We are in the talks with some labels in order to find what is best for this band because it is a very different one and not something like DREAM THEATER or SYMPHONY X [which features ADRENALINE MOB singer Russell Allen]. At this point, we have in mind that the album is going to be out in January 2012. Having the tour slot with GODSMACK we thought it would be a nice introduction to the band to self-release an EP for now.
Metal Kaoz: Everyone in this band has a rich musical background; do you believe that this adds pressure to ADRENALINE MOB as a band?
Portnoy: It puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the band. First of all, there is a lot of pressure coming from my side, since this is the first band after DREAM THEATER and AVENGED SEVENFOLD, so there is a lot of focus on what I will do next. Also, this is the first "real" band that Russell has done outside of SYMPHONY X. And the biggest pressure comes from the fact that people coming to the show are expecting to watch a progressive metal band, and ADRENALINE MOB is NOT. We realize that this is not DREAM THEATER or SYMPHONY X, and, in fact, this is the fuckin' point of that. If we wanted to play progressive, we could do it in DREAM THEATER or SYMPHONY X. This is a totally new "beast." There is a side of me that always loved aggressive, riff-oriented music like PANTERA, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY or SLIPKNOT and things like that. Of course, I still love progressive music and million-time-signature and 20-minute epic songs, but I have been doing this for 25 years. So, it was time to do something different and this goes also for Russ.
Metal Kaoz: Do you feel that you have to apologize or explain yourself for this move?
Portnoy: I don't think I have to apologize for this, and I am excited and proud of this band. But I feel that I have to explain and help people to understand that by this EP is not going to sound like a progressive metal band. As long as they leave that expectations aside and take it for what it is, then there is no apologies necessary.
Metal Kaoz: Before getting to write the music for this band, did you have in mind of its musical direction?
Portnoy: Mike [Orlando, guitar] and Russ had that in their minds and as I said the minute I listened to the track "Undaunted", I texted Russ and told him that I wanted to join them. I always wanted to do something aggressive, heavy but at the same time melodic with grooves, riffs and high energy music. You will see at the show tonight that there will be really performers on stage. And with no disrespect to SYMPHONY X or DREAM THEATER, I will say this is a very different stage presentation. I mean, with DREAM THEATER I was the most animated performer, like Russ is for SYMPHONY X, but in this band I should say I am the most "mellow"… everybody is running circles around me all the time. It is a nice, different and refreshing environment.
Metal Kaoz: Have you been facing "haters" along this process?
Portnoy: Absolutely, I have. It has been a tough year for me watching DREAM THEATER fans turning their backs on me, which is unfortunate, because I have been the most fan-oriented artist you'll ever meet. And during my time with DREAM THEATER, everything I did was for the fans. So it is sad when I see someone turning his back on me. But, again, there is a big number of fans who have been very supportive and for those people I am so eternally grateful and I will continue trying to make them proud fans.

Catholic Association Of Journalists Protests BEHEMOTH Frontman\'s TV GigPoland's Catholic Association Of Journalists (Katolickie Stowarzyszenie Dziennikarzy, or KSD) has released a statement protesting BEHEMOTH frontman Adam "Nergal" Darski's involvement with the Polish version of the hit American singing competition "The Voice", appropriately named "The Voice Of Poland".
"The participation of Adam Darski — a Satanist and outspoken enemy of Christian values — contradicts the missionary nature of Polish television," the statement reads.
In a recent interview with Terrorizer magazine, Nergal stated about his new television gig, "It's going to be fun. The first black metal judge ever in history doing a mainstream thing, you know? People are going to freak out! Some are going to love it, some are going to fucking hate it. But that's what this music has always been about, right? To provoke, to cause different opinions. The more extreme opinions, the better, I think."
He added of the attention he has received in his home country, "This so-called celebrity life is not my environment at all, but I am a part of it if I want it or not. So it's been crazy. Then the whole case with my sickness and me getting out alive [Nergal was diagnosed with leukemia in August 2010 and underwent a bone marrow transplant procedure in December. — Ed.], it just brought some extra attention to it. And there's definitely some people that want to make some money on it because it's a cool story for them to write about and stuff, but I was like, 'Okay, if they're going to make money, I want to have my share, too.' I was away from music and away from being active live for a good year, so yeah, I need to get something in return!"
It was previously reported in the Polish media that the producers of "The Voice Of Poland" were hoping that Nergal's presence on the program would attract a new audience as well as improve its chances of competing against rival television talent-show franchise "X Factor".
The American version of "The Voice" was a big hit for NBC and helped breathe new life into the careers of coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green.
Darski was found innocent last month of offending religious feelings in connection with a September 2007 incident when he reportedly called the Catholic Church "the most murderous cult on the planet" during the band's performance in Gdynia and tore up a copy of the Bible, calling it "a book of lies."
A Polish judge ruled on August 18 that Darski's ripping up of a Bible during a show was a form of artistic expression consistent with the style of his band.
Judge Krzysztof Wieckowski said he considered Darski's actions "a form of art." He added that the court had no intention of limiting freedom of expression or the right to criticize religion. 26

JETHRO TULL - Aqualung 40th Anniversary Collector\'s, Special Editions Due HalloweenAqualung is JETHRO TULL's most recognized album and a definitive rock classic. Now, 40 years after its release, this prized recording gets a collection worthy of its historic status on October 31st.
This is not a simplistic rehashed remastering aimmed at squeezing another few pounds, dollars, euros, etc. out of the recording. Want proof? The limited collector's edition's contents include:
- 180g heavyweight LP, 2CD, DVD, and Blu-Ray including various unreleased materials, a new stereo mix, the original Quad mix, and 5.1 DTS and Dolby Digital Surround. The "special edition" includes just the two CDs.
- 12"x12" 48-page hardback book featuring liner notes and an interview with Ian, Q&A with engineer John Burns, Don Lawson (initially written for Classic Rock Presents Prog in March 2011), memoirs from band members (Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond (bass guitar), Martin Barre (guitar), Clive Bunker (drums), Barrie Barlow (drummer following Clive Bunker's departure), Glenn Cornick (original bassist on early recordings), Terry Ellis (Manager) and Jennie Franks (Ian's first wife who wrote the lyrics for the title track), rare photos, notes on the new mixes by producer Steven Wilson, and Billie Ritchie (from '60s rock band and label mate CLOUDS), rare photos, album lyrics, and more.
Ian's comments: "Well - it's finally here! The superb remixes by Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson in both stereo and 5.1 Surround. Plus the re-mastered original mixes, bonus tracks, alternative versions and takes of the classic Aqualung material from 40 years ago. When I wrote and recorded these songs and slaved over a hot audio-mixer in Island Records' Basing Street Studios, I never thought we we would be celebrating this 40th Anniversary release, soon to be released in October. But you can't keep a good song down. Many of these are still favourites on stage today in our concerts throughout the world. I hope you enjoy this splendid EMI release and, if there's someone out there you really love, then why not treat them to the Collector's Edition in all its glory. Or, come to think of it, if there's someone out there you really dislike, then the same might apply. Each to his own. Me - I kinda like it..... For those of you easily confused about such things, a 'remix' is not the same as a 're-master.' Remixing involves going back to the original studio multi-track masters and balancing and perfecting the sound on all the individual instrumental and vocal tracks and creating from them a new stereo or 5.1 surround master.
Remastering' is just the cleaning up and making a new copy of the original stereo master - which usually results in a clearer and more sparkling listening experience than the original, when CDs were usually just the vinyl master copied straight to the then new CD medium. These days, with digital audio, we can afford to get more dynamic range and frequency response compared to the vinyl album and (God forbid) cassette versions of old.
Many thanks to Tim Chacksfield and Steve Davis at EMI for all their hard work and initiative in making this happen. And to the enthusiastic and respectful Steven Wilson, who has just sent me the remixes of another album to listen to, which he has been working on. But, another year, another story."

BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION: Complete \'Live Over Europe\' DVD Details RevealedBLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION, the English-American rock supergroup featuring the talents of bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes (DEEP PURPLE, TRAPEZE, BLACK SABBATH), blues rock guitarist/vocalist Joe Bonamassa, drummer Jason Bonham (LED ZEPPELIN), and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (DREAM THEATER), will release its first concert DVD, "Live Over Europe", on October 24, 2011 (Blu-ray to follow November 15) on the J&R Adventures imprint. The two-DVD live set was filmed with 14 HD cameras and 5.1 Surround Sound during the band's debut tour in the summer of 2011. Over three nights, playing to packed venues in the German cities of Hamburg, Munich and Berlin, the 18-song set list (17 originals and one cover) hits on both of BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION's albums — 2010's debut and 2011's sophomore release "2", which The Sunday Mercury praised, "This is classic rock goes large, an album that lives up to its heritage. It may not be bettered this year." "Live Over Europe" highlights include the songs "Black Country", "One Last Soul", "Save Me", "Man In The Middle", "Cold" and "Song of Yesterday", which fans can sign up to receive as a free audio track download, available September 8. Bonus features include an exclusive 28-page collector's booklet and DVD with a 20-minute "behind-the-scenes" featurette and photo collection.
Producer Kevin Shirley explains, "We saw that this live act could be an awesome force of nature to behold; one that promised legendary performances like those of our heroes of classic rock. The plan was to get them out there for the entire world to hear. Records allow a certain musical finesse, but live performance promises so much in the very transient nature of a gig; chances are taken, boundaries are crossed and the most exciting performances explode. Two studio albums built a repertoire big enough for a full concert which allowed us to unleash the monster for all the world to see and feel."
BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION recently completed its debut tour, visiting a select number of cities in North America and Europe. On June 10, the band played to a near-sold-out crowd in Anaheim, California, prompting The Orange County Register to write, "The four members of BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION truly recast the heavy rock of the '60s and '70s and yank it into the 21st century as well as anyone in recent memory." At the Wolverhampton Civic Hall, The Birmingham Mail called the band's performance "rip-roaring" and "breath-taking."
As part of J&R Adventures' strategy to use social media as an integral part of the initial marketing launch of "Live Over Europe", they created the Facebook BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION event page. Facebook members can join the page here to receive an exclusive glimpse of the new DVD and a chance to download the live free track "Song Of Yesterday".

BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION initially came to fruition when producer Kevin Shirley saw Hughes and Bonamassa join forces on stage in Los Angeles in November 2009 for an explosive performance at Guitar Center's King of the Blues event. Shirley then recruited Bonham and Sherinian for the project, which is named after the industrial area in the British Midlands where both Hughes and Bonham were born and raised. 1

LINKIN PARK Raises More Than $350K For Japan Relief EffortsLINKIN PARK raised more than $350,000 for Japanese earthquake and tsunami relief efforts with a benefit concert for 1,100 fans on Wednesday night (August 31) at the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles. Frontman Chester Bennington told MTV News, "It's especially an honor to be able to give back to the Japanese community that's been so devastated and been so great in supporting us."
Fans at the show all raised $500 or more for relief efforts in order to win a pair of tickets to the secret concert through LINKIN PARK's Music For Relief charity.
Bennington told The Pulse Of Radio a while back that LINKIN PARK originally began Music For Relief to aid with rebuilding in Southeast Asia after the 2004 tsunami. "You know, we started Music For Relief, you know, after some pretty horrible natural disasters occurred and we felt that we were in a position where we could actually do something," he said. "I think that it's important to raise awareness."
Bennington explained why fundraising efforts this time involved a LINKIN PARK show, saying, "Unfortunately, there are natural disasters affecting so many places all over the earth that we're always asking our fans for money. We wanted to do something that was exciting for our fans and gave them something to look forward to, a goal that was beyond anything they'd done before."
The original goal was $250,000, which was exceeded by more than $100,000. Bennington said that the top fundraiser brought in more than $13,000.
LINKIN PARK will head to Japan and Singapore later this month and continues to work on a follow-up to last year's "A Thousand Suns" album.
One hundred percent of the proceeds from the online fundraising campaign will benefit Music For Relief's support of Save the Children in Japan to provide services, care and assistance to children affected by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. 18

REDSCREAM Adds Third Guitarist REDSCREAM, the new Stockholm, Sweden-based project featuring three members of the legendary Swedish death metal band GRAVE and American guitarist Ralph Santolla (OBITUARY, DEICIDE), has announced the addition of guitarist Mika Lagreen (FACEBREAKER, GRAVE) to the group's ranks.
Commented REDSCREAM: "Three guitars! LYNYRD SKYNYRD! IRON MAIDEN! Volume wars!
"We had intended to be a three-guitar band, with Mika, from the beginning. He was unavailable during our recent writing sessions in Stockholm, but now that he's gotten some things out of the way, he's ready to rage (again).
"GRAVE are currently on tour in the U.S., and Ralph is learning music software. He will join GRAVE in Seattle to begin filming the sequel to Oscar Ramirez' 'Count Chocula' (being edited now). It will either be an instant tour movie classic or the stupidest thing ever. Either way, GREAT SUCCESS!!!
"We will reconvene in Stockholm in October to keep writing and narrow down our search for a singer." 2

The cover art was done by Atlanta, Georgia-based artist Richard Morley of Morley Arts and can be seen below.
Described as "a cross between CANNIBAL CORPSE, SPASTIC INK, and a Bugs Bunny cartoon," "The Animation Of Entomology" takes Jarzombek's fascination with animated cartoons and creepy crawlies to a whole new level. Having experimented with writing complex pieces of music to sync up with movie sequences in the past with his previous outfit SPASTIC INK, the concept has now been applied to BLOTTED SCIENCE over the course of seven songs and a total of 24 minutes of music.
Says Jarzombek: "We wanted to follow up 'The Machinations Of Dementia' along some of the same lines of science and gore, and came up with a killer concept and some great material with yet another 12-tone writing system. I totally busted my ass syncing things up, carefully orchestrated music to film, bug movies actually, and nit-picked notes to death on this material until my fingers bled and my brain nearly exploded. How everything falls into place I think is beyond incredible! Whether this is the heaviest or most technical thing I've ever done, I don't really know or care, but no other band/project is pulling off what we are doing with this EP."
"The Animation Of Entomology" track listing:
01. Ingesting Blattaria
02. Cretaceous Chasm
03. Vermicular Asphyxiation
04. A Sting Operation - I. Human Barbequed
05. A Sting Operation - II. Cessation Sanitation
06. A Sting Operation - III. Seeing Dead People
07. A Sting Operation - IV. Omitting Eyes
The folllow-up to the band's highly acclaimed 2007 "The Machinations Of Dementia" full-length album was produced and mixed by Ron Jarzombek and recorded in San Antonio, Texas; Tampa, Florida; and V. Santura's (OBSCURA, TRIPTYKON) Woodshed Studios in Landshut, Germany where the drums were cut. Mastering duties were once again handled by Jacob Hansen (VOLBEAT, DESTRUCTION) at Hansen Studios in Ribe, Denmark.
A two-minute video teaser for "The Animation Of Entomology" can be viewed below.

GRAVEWORM: New Album Details RevealedItalian dark metal outfit GRAVEWORM will release its new album, "Fragments Of Death", on October 21 via Nuclear Blast Records. The follow-up to 2009's "Diabolical Figures" was recorded in July at the Dream Sound Studios in Munich, Germany and was mastered by Jan Vacik. According to a press release, "The songs are about the death in its thousand faces, which is also reflected in the album title and cover art. Musically, the album can be seen as a mixture of the best of the last four records, with some old-school roots and definitive darker than its predecessors."
"Fragments Of Death" track listing:
01. Insomnia
02. Only Death In Our Wake
03. Absence Of Faith
04. Living Nightmare
05. The World Will Die In Flames
06. Anxiety
07. See No Future
08. The Prophecy
09. Remembrance
10. Old Forgotten Song
11. Where Angels Do Not Fly
Bonus track:
12. Awake
Commented vocalist Stefano Fiori: "For me, the cover artwork reflects exactly the lyrics. The album generally deals with the topic of death. So the fragments are pieces of the puzzle of death. Each one of the songs represents a way to die. For example, song 6 is about the happenings in Japan. Other songs are about war, which sadly still exists in this world these days. We're all influenced by all of these proceedings. Be it that you're confronted with them yourself, you know someone who is, or you see it in the media. The angel of death on the cover is made of pieces of the puzzle, the so-called elements of death."
Added cover artist Daniel Hofer: "When the band presented the new album's title and the contentual orientation to me, a concrete picture came to my mind quite quickly. An angel of death, rising from one dimension and returning to his former strength. The 'fragments' of this angel of death are both depicted as shards and pieces of a puzzle — this image can be found throughout the whole booklet.
"The basic idea for the cover can be transferred to the band's musical return to their roots and can be compared to the quite well-behaved angel that could be seen on the '(N)Utopia' cover who returns now as a cornuted messenger of death.
"After 'Diabolical Figures', it was a very nice and productive cooperation again and I'm happy that the band agreed on me as the designer once more." 10

Previously Unreleased Second DARK NEW DAY Album To See Light Of Day The previously unreleased second album, as well as a collection of 14 songs of B-side material, from DARK NEW DAY — the band featuring Clint Lowery (guitar; SEVENDUST), Corey Lowery (bass; ex-STEREOMUD, STUCK MOJO), Brett Hestla (vocals, guitar; ex-CREED, VIRGOS MERLOT), Will Hunt (drums; EVANESCENCE, ex-SKRAPE, TOMMY LEE) and Bradley "BC" Kochmit (guitar; SWITCHED a.k.a. SW1TCHED) — will be made available soon via iTunes and other digital-music stores.
Some of the tracks that are believed to have been recorded for the sophomore DARK NEW DAY CD include "Simple", "Hail Mary", "Fiend", "Outside" and "Vicious Thinking".
DARK NEW DAY released its debut album, "Twelve Year Silence", in June of 2005. The CD was mixed with producer/mixer Ben Grosse, who had previously worked with FILTER, FUEL, SEVENDUST and ALTER BRIDGE. The disc featured the single "Brother" (see video below).
DARK NEW DAY may have been new to fans of the bandmembers' previous groups, but it was really a reunion that was twelve years in the making, as the members of DARK NEW DAY literally grew up together. Brothers Clint and Corey Lowery and childhood friend Troy McLawhorn met singer Brett Hestla and drummer Will Hunt while touring as kids in the Southeast club circuit. "We were playing a circuit that had a lot of older people in it, in their twenties, and we were all kids, so we could identify with each other," said Hunt in a 2005 interview. "We really came into ourselves on that circuit," added Corey. "It was like going to rock 'n' roll high school — you'd always try and turn it up because you wanted to impress each other." 1
