DEVOLVED Parts Ways With GuitaristJohn Sankey, drummer and founding member of Australian/Los Angeles tech-metal masters DEVOLVED, has issued the following statement in regards to the band's current status:
"After the recording of the last DEVOLVED album, 'Oblivion', guitarist Brett Noordin took some time off back in our homeland of Australia and will not be returning to Los Angeles to continue as part of DEVOLVED. It is an amicable decision and I wish Brett all the best with any future musical endeavors. His involvement with the band and dedication over the years is greatly valued. I have since been working on brand new DEVOLVED material with guitarist Mark Hawkins from Florida-based band ROBOTS PULLING LEVERS. Mark is an exceptional guitar player who definitely enables us to take the band's sound far beyond anything we have done before. He and I already have a number of new tracks completed which are easily the most intense and technically proficient DEVOLVED material to date.
"My vision for the next album is to make it as brutal as possible and return to a more death metal-orientated sound.
"The songwriting process for DEVOLVED has always been based around drum patterns, which I write first, then we build guitars and vocals around the drum arrangement.
"I had a lot of drum parts written for the 'Oblivion' sessions that were not used because I felt they were too extreme to fit with the concept and style of that album.
"We really wanted to expand the band's sound on 'Oblivion' and experiment with new ideas, which we hadn't yet incorporated on our previous CDs.
"I'm extremely proud of 'Oblivion' — it is a very diverse album while still being very dark and heavy — but this time around I want to focus more on making a far more brutal and in-your-face album, and working with Mark has definitely allowed me to do that!
"There are no plans as of yet for when the next album will be recorded or released, but we intend to have all the songs written and finalized over the coming months.
"Right now I am also very busy writing and recording material with two other Los Angeles-based bands I play in, THRONE OF ASHES and KAVAN. I'll also be out on the road again in the USA during October and November drumming with Texas band PINHED, as well as working on material for a few other projects I am involved in."

NEAL SCHON Says JOURNEY Recalled Older Styles For New AlbumJOURNEY guitarist Neal Schon told The Pulse Of Radio that he called upon keyboardist Jonathan Cain to use one of the band's classics as the template of the new material he wanted for the group's latest album, "Eclipse". "Jon, y'know, he had brought in some ballads and they were good, but I felt that we had other stuff that was more relevant for this record," he said. "And I said, 'Y'know, you wrote 'Separate Ways', man, with [Steve] Perry,' I said, 'Go grab one of those. I know you have one of those sitting somewhere. And so 'Resonate' he brought in and I went, 'That's frickin' great!' Y'know, I love that."
"Eclipse" arrived in May and is being sold exclusively through Wal-Mart.
Perhaps the album's nod toward JOURNEY's older style is what led Schon to recently say that former singer Steve Perry is welcome to join the band as a special guest on tour.
Schon said current singer Arnel Pineda is "totally down, and such a humble human being, that he would be overjoyed" if Steve performed with the band.
JOURNEY is currently on the road with FOREIGNER and NIGHT RANGER. The tour stops on Wednesday (August 24) in Holmdel, New Jersey and wraps up on October 21 in Seattle.
Perry said earlier this year that he had written 50 songs for his first solo album since 1994, but no further information about the project has surfaced.

STEVEN TYLER, MASTODON, WOLFMOTHER, FILTER Featured On ZZ TOP Tribute Album The music and legacy of ZZ TOP that has been part of the world's musical landscape for over 40 years will be celebrated with the October 11 release of "A Tribute From Friends".
The album, to be released by Show Dog/Universal Music, features 11 classic ZZ TOP songs interpreted by top-flight artists working in a broad range of musical genres. All of the album's tracks have been newly recorded, specifically for the project. These include FILTER's performance of "Gimme All Your Lovin'", GRACE POTTER & THE NOCTURNALS' take on "Tush", as well as WYCLEF JEAN's "Rough Boy", "Legs" from NICKELBACK and WOLFMOTHER's interpretation of "Cheap Sunglasses".
The album kicks off with "Sharp Dressed Man", from THE M.O.B., Mick Fleetwood's ad hoc group that includes fellow FLEETWOOD MAC founder John McVie as well as AEROSMITH's Steven Tyler and guitar great Jonny Lang. Fleetwood commented, "We're delighted to honor ZZ TOP this way. Their legacy, like that of the original FLEETWOOD MAC, is steeped in the blues we all love so much. I know that Steven and Jonny feel as strongly about their legacy as John and I do."
After Billy F Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard, the original — and continuing — members of ZZ TOP were informed that "A Tribute From Friends" was in the offing, they issued the following statement:
"When we were told there was going to be a ZZ TOP tribute album a while ago and logically asked, 'Who are we paying tribute to?' Then we found out that a bunch of great artists were paying tribute to us and we were in disbelief. For the past 40 or so years, all we've done is get out there and crank it and try to have a good time while doing so. To a great extent, we've succeeded since we're still having a good time so that would be reward enough for ‘the same three guys playing the same three chords.' Now comes 'A Tribute From Friends' and we're so delighted that our music resonates with these great musicians whom we so admire."
"A Tribute From Friends" also includes "Waitin' for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago" by DAUGHTRY, "Got Me Under Pressure" from DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED and MASTODON's version of "Just Got Paid". COHEED & CAMBRIA contributed the anthemic "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers" while country superstar Jamey Johnson's track is the seminal "La Grange". Of their invitation to be a part of the album, lead singer Chris Daughtry said, "We were completely honored! A classic great band with amazing songs? We're in!" And of ZZ TOP's music, "It's classic! Simple chord progressions, great riffs with hooky choruses...very inspiring to a band like us."
The co-executive producer of "A Tribute From Friends" is Carl Stubner, ZZ TOP's manager, who noted, "'A Tribute From Friends' underscores the legacy of ZZ TOP in the most musical way possible and illustrates just how important Billy, Dusty and Frank have been to successive generations. It was a privilege to work with the pantheon of brilliant artists who contributed their efforts and so much love to this project."
"A Tribute From Friends" track listing:
01. THE M.O.B. (Mick Fleetwood, Steven Tyler, Jonny Lang & John McVie) - "Sharp Dressed Man"

SYSTEM OF A DOWN Frontman Takes Part In Public Discussion In ArmeniaOn August 15, SYSTEM OF A DOWN frontman Serj Tankian — who is of Armenian descent — took part in a public discussion in Yerevan, the capital and largest city of Armenia, where he addressed more than 200 civil society members. Video footage of the hour-long event, which was organized by the Civilitas Foundation, a Yerevan think-tank, and the local office of Counterpart International, a U.S. civic development agency, can be seen below. A couple of highlights from the discussion follow.
On his belief that Armenia has done "pretty well" since gaining independence two decades ago:
Serj: "I think we need to establish the rule of law in this country. I think having a rule of law in the country from top to bottom will alleviate a lot of concerns, whether it's traffic tickets or taxes or wages or how many hours someone should work. It's all connected to this one thing of enforcing the rule of law. And the efficiencies created by the lowering of corruption will actually really spur productivity in this country … and that will make it easier for foreign and local investment."
On the need for a strict separation between business and politics:
Serj: "In Armenia we have business and politics in the same seat. So one of them has got to get off the seat. You know, they can't be sitting in the same space. Otherwise, it looks like an orgy."
On how Armenians should be "patient" in expecting positive changes in their country:
Serj: "We are a 20-year-old country and in retrospect, if you look at the whole situation, I think we are doing pretty well, despite everything that we talked about. It's a beautiful country with beautiful people. There is a lot of potential, there is a lot of energy."
On the Teghut project, which if implemented, would lead to the destruction of some 128,000 trees, wreaking further havoc on Armenia's green areas, which have steadily shrunk since the 1990s:
Serj: "I think open-pit mining is very dangerous in this country and everywhere else. I think we'll be poisoning our lives by opening up that mine in the Teghut forest."
The members of SYSTEM OF A DOWN, who are of Armenian descent, all lost family members and family history to the Armenian genocide.
During the first genocide of the 20th century, perpetrated by Ottoman Turkey during World War I against its Armenian population, over 1.5 million Armenians were annihilated and hundreds of thousands deported from their ancient homeland.

Ex-NEVERMORE Drummer: WARREL DANE\'s Comments Verify That I Made The Right Decision In LeavingFormer NEVERMORE drummer Van Williams has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET regarding his departure from the band:
"I'd just like to say for the record, playing in NEVERMORE consumed a huge part of my life from the time we got signed together back in '94 up until just a few months ago. During this time, the band has shared a lot of blood, sweat, tears and beers together, good times, bad times, and made some pretty cool music along the way, in my opinion, and I am proud to have been part of that with Warrel [Dane, vocals], Jeff [Loomis, guitar], Jim [Sheppard, bass] and all the great guitar players we've had in between.
"About Warrel's comment [ in a recent interview] ('I mean, I could give a shit about our drummer — we never got along anyway'), It's unfortunate to hear that after all we've been through, but a statement like that really just verifies that I made the right decision in leaving. And so I move on, I wish all luck in your future endeavors... and yes, even 'the singer.' :)
"With that being said, you know what they say: 'It's onward and upwards!' ...or sideways..."

AVENGED SEVENFOLD \'Not Really Thinking About\' Next Album Yet It's been just over a year since AVENGED SEVENFOLD released its fifth album, "Nightmare", and the band can see the end of the touring and promotional cycle for it approaching sometime in the first half of 2012. But singer M. Shadows told The Pulse Of Radio that making a follow-up to the group's first No. 1 disc is the furthest thing from their minds right now. "We're not really thinking about it," he said. "I think bands burn themselves out. I mean, look what happened to DISTURBED. You get caught up in the 'do a record, tour for two years, do a record, tour for two years.' We just need to make sure everybody's mentally in the right spot before we start writing and doing a new record. Right now, I think we're gonna tour, go back to Europe in February, maybe finish up with a couple of things in Europe in the summer, and then take six, seven months and just sit around. If we decide to write, we will, if we decide not to, we won't."
DISTURBED announced earlier this month that it was going on "indefinite hiatus" after five studio albums and more than a decade on the road.
AVENGED bassist Johnny Christ admitted in a recent interview that writing the band's next album without late drummer James "The Rev" Sullivan is going to be "a very different process without having Jimmy around."

TESSERACT Announces New SingerU.K. progressive metallers TESSERACT have announced the addition of vocalist Elliot Coleman to the group's ranks. Elliot's huge range, distinctive character and brutal roars demonstrated on his work with OMNOM, SKY EATS AIRPLANE and ZELLIACK made him the perfect replacement for former vocalist, Dan Tompkins.
TESSERACT bassist Amos Williams makes the introduction: "We'd like to take this opportunity to introduce somebody special, Elliot Coleman. Some of you may know him as a member of ZELLIACK, SKY EATS AIRPLANE and OF LEGENDS, or maybe from OMNOM, or HAUNTED SHORES. Well, now he's part of TESSERACT!
"We're very excited about working with Elliot as we feel he has a great talent and personality, as well as, and most importantly, a voice that transcends the norm and continues the TESSERACT tradition of taking things to the next level."
Elliot's catalogue of work is as impressive as it is extensive, including numerous appearances with HAUNTED SHORES and a guest spot on PERIPHERY's track "Race Car". He most recently played bass in Washington D.C. tech metallers OF LEGENDS, but as a passionate vocalist, he jumped at the chance to front TESSERACT.
Commented Elliot: "I'm very much excited to be a part of the juggernaut that is TESSERACT. I know I have big shoes to fill, as Dan is a fantastic vocalist, but I'm confident that we'll be producing some great new music in the coming year and I'll be adding some new flavors to this ever-evolving machine."
Tompkins left TESSERACT in July due to other life priorities. He explained in a statement, "This has been the most difficult decision I have had to make in my career as a singer. My priorities in life have changed and as such I can no longer continue with the band. Our friendships are strong and I wish to thank Acle, Mos, Jay and James for all their support and dedication over the past few years. We have achieved great things, travelled the world and met many incredible people and I stand proud to say that I have been a part of the band's success and helped to carve a wonderful album. I will hold onto these memories for the rest of my life. It has been an incredible journey and it is certainly not the end for myself or TESSERACT. I look forward to new beginnings and wish my good friends all the very best for the future."
Added Amos: "You know, when you travel so far and spend so much time together, as well as achieving as much as we have over the past three years, you become like family. And it is precisely because of that close bond that we fully understand and respect Dan's choice to no longer be a part of TESSERACT. We are and will always be close friends, and hope there will be a time in the future when we will work together again. Thank you, buddy, for being part of the TESSERACT journey; we will always have fond memories of the Dan Tompkins years!"
Approaching the lineup adjustment as a progression rather than a setback, TESSERACT is already hard at work writing the follow-up to the critically acclaimed album "One" with Elliot.
TESSERACT will headline the "Lowering The Tone" European tour in September and October before heading to the U.S. for the "Saints And Sinners" trek in November and December with ANIMALS AS LEADERS and BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME.

CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED: New Album Details RevealedCHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED — the project led by acclaimed metal drummer Richard Christy (ICED EARTH, DEATH, LEASH LAW, CONTROL DENIED, BURNING INSIDE) — has set "Cold Winds On Timeless Days" as the title of its sophomore CD, due on October 11 via Metal Blade Records. Audiohammer's Jason Suecof produced and Mark Lewis mixed, while mastering was handled by Alan Douches at West West Side Music (SEPULTURA, SUFFOCATION, UNEARTH) in New Windsor, New York. Christy states, "It's 12 songs of crushing heavy metal and I CAN'T WAIT for everyone to hear it.
"I'm VERY proud of this album — everyone worked so hard on it and when you listen to it, it definitely shows."
The writing process for "Cold Winds On Timeless Days" actually began while the band was mixing its 2010 debut. Christy used his experience on the first album to write songs that catered not only to each member's playing style, but to Jason Suecof's production style. The result: demos that turned out nearly identical to what ended up on the album.
With 12 songs clocking in at 58 minutes, fans are getting a lot more music this time around. Recording twelve songs in a short amount of time is no easy feat, but one that was accomplished because of the stellar talents in the band. Christy elaborates further: "I wanted to get a natural sound out of this album, I wanted everyone to be well rehearsed, not that I wanted the album to be rushed, but I wanted the spontaneous live feel and not over think anything too much." Christy describes "Cold Winds on Timeless Days" as a "perfect storm of producing."
"Cold Winds On Timeless Days" track listing:
01. Timeless Days
02. Ashes Falling Upon Us
03. Zerospan
04. Cold Winds
05. Lead The Way
06. Forever Marching On
07. Guiding Me
08. The Beast Outside My Window
09. On Unclean Ground
10. Bloodworm

CRADLE OF FILTH: \'Evermore Darkly…\' Artwork Unveiled?French retailer Fnac has posted what appears to be the cover artwork for "Evermore Darkly…", the new mini-album from British extreme metallers CRADLE OF FILTH. Due on October 10 via Peaceville Records, the follow-up to last year's triumphant "Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa" album will arrive as a CD/DVD package including new tracks and rarities, with a lengthy on-the-road documentary and ten songs filmed live at this year's Graspop Metal Meeting in Dessel, Belgium, as well as the video for the song "Lilith Immaculate".
The "Evermore Darkly…" CD features brand new musical beast "Thank Your Lucky Stars", plus a special remix of "Forgive Me Father", courtesy of ANTHRAX guitarist Rob Caggiano, an extended rendition of "Lilith Immaculate", as well as tempered demo versions of three "Darkly, Darkly…" songs. The mini-album closes with a special taster from CRADLE OF FILTH's impending orchestral project in the form of a haunting, classic reworking of fan favorite "Summer Dying Fast".
The "Evermore Darkly…" DVD contains footage from summer 2011 when CRADLE OF FILTH embarked on a rapid spat of tours, accompanied by two eager filmmakers. The resulting documentary, "You Can't Polish A Turd, But You Can Roll It In Glitter", combined with performance and interview footage culminates in a forty five minute film of the not so glamorous reality of life in a touring band at work and play, as they trawl their way across Europe over eight performances. The DVD includes an interview with ghoul-guide Dani Filth, interspersed and peppered with live footage and backstage shenanigans, culminating in the entire hour long set from this year's Graspop Metal Meeting appearance.
According to Dani, "Evermore Darkly…" is "a much-loved musical stop-gap between albums, a pleasure treasure trove of wild and wicked wonders primed especially for fans. Something for them to sink their teeth into this autumn as the CRADLE invasion fleet is primed for future contagion."
