KORN frontman Jonathan Davis, MARILYN MANSON, FLYLEAF, EVANESCENCE singer Amy Lee and others have reworked songs from the soundtrack to Tim Burton's 1993 movie "The Nightmare Before Christmas" for the upcoming CD collection "Nightmare Revisited". The disc, which drops September 30, follows a 2006 update to the film's soundtrack that included cuts by FALL OUT BOY and PANIC AT THE DISCO.

Bassist Shane Embury of the British grindcore pioneers NAPALM DEATH has issued the following update:

"Well, today is the first day in the studio laying down drum tracks for our new album. After all the initial tuning and setting up of the drums, we managed to get four drum tracks down which is a great start, but we have another 13 to go. As people may or may not have heard, we are at Parlour studios in Kettering with producer Russ Russell at the helm laying down the drums and then in a few days we will return to Foel studios in Wales for the recording of the guitars, bass and vocals — finally to return here to Parlour for the mix. So early days yet but we will keep you posted as best we can."

Steve Rowe of the Australian Christian metallers MORTIFICATION has issued the following update:

"We will be recording a demo of a new song very soon at Penny Drop Studio, where we plan to record the new album next year. Penny Drop Studio is the old St Andrews Studio where we recorded 'Envision Evangelene' and 'Bloodworld'. The new songs are sounding very heavy with, once again, a fresh approach in the vein of 'Erasing The Goblin', but different! Ha, ha! Re-invention is the master of all art! Yes, there is plenty of fast stuff but expect the unexpected. The next album will be a very sudden, out of the blocks, in your face, aggressive thunder ball! We are not letting out album or song titles until next year."

MORTIFICATION's twelfth studio album, "Brain Cleaner" was released in 2004 through the Rowe Productions label. The follow-up to 2002's "Relentless" was described at the time as "the heaviest project the band has recorded in 10 years" and was said to be "a lot more of a death metal/grind-orientated album but with plenty of power and thrash metal mixed in to keep it interesting and multi-dimensional."

Danish death metallers EXMORTEM have completed work on their fifth album, "Funeral Phantom", for an October 20 release via Mighty Music. The CD was self-produced by the band, while the mixing was handled by Jacob Bredahl (HATESPHERE, LAST MILE). According to a press release, fans should "expect a crushing, sludgy, energetic death machine."

Martin Thim (guitar) was responsible for the design and layout for the album, which introduces a range of "phantoms" created specially for EXMORTEM. "The family will grow from now on and new creations will come in the future," he exlained. "These will be part of our live shows, graphics and etc."

The band previously described the new material as "nothing short of unique in its own dark and morbid way. The material will include almost CELTIC FROST/ENTOMBED-like slow songs, more mid-paced 'Blessed Are The Sick'-sounding [MORBID ANGEL] tracks, and not to forget a bunch of fast and extreme tunes to spice up the symphony."

Swedish doom legends CANDLEMASS recently spent time in the studio recording a new EP, "Lucfer Rising", for a tentative early October release via Nuclear Blast Records. It will include two brand new tracks — "Lucifer Rising" and "The White God" — plus re-recorded version of "Demon's Gate" live in the studio. As a bonus, you will get an audio recording of most of last year's gig from Athens, Greece: "At The Gallows End", "Solitude", "Emperor Of The Void", "Devil Seed", "Under The Oak", "Mirror Mirror", "Of Stars And Smoke", "Black Dwarf" and "Samarithan".

Former DEEP PURPLE, RAINBOW and YNGWIE MALMSTEEN singer Joe Lynn Turner will release his first solo live album, entitled "Live In Germany", on October 10 via Frontiers Records. Norway's TRAIL OF TEARS will enter Soundsuite Studio in Marseille, France with acclaimed producer Terje Refsnes on November 3 to begin recording its sixth studio album. The band expects to spend six weeks tracking the as-yet-untitled effort which will be released worldwide on Napalm Records in early 2009.

Comments vocalist Ronny Thorsen: "We are beyond stoked to enter the studio again at Soundsuite with our fellow Norwegian Terje Refsnes. This will be our third album recording in beautiful Marseille and we are boiling over with creativity and excitement! So far we have about 14 songs ready, with an additional four or five on the drawing board. It will be a difficult challenge to figure out which ones will end up on the final product but definitely something we look forward to."

Due to the preparations for the new album recording sessions, the band has decided to postpone the previously announced South American tour, which was scheduled to take place in September/October.

Stated Thorsen: "We hope that everyone will understand and support this decision as it is the only right one for the circumstances. We want to deliver a full production and a killer live experience when we finally come to South America and not some amputated half-assed shows. It is a known fact that it takes a considerable amount of time to organize such a tour in South America as opposed to Europe, not to mention finding the right promoters. Our main priority now is to set our minds 100% into making this album as astonishing as it has to be and therefore we see no other alternative than to postpone the tour. Please note that we are using the word postpone here, we WILL reach your shores after the new album is released to give you a show that you as well as the band deserves!"

TRAIL OF TEARS' fifth album, "Existentia", was issued in January 2007 via Napalm Records. The CD was recorded at Soundsuite Studio in Marseille, France with producer Terje Refsnes and includes contributions from French female singer Emmanuelle Zoldan and Norwegian keyboard master Bernt Moen.

The Pulse of Radio reports that BLACK SABBATH's 1970 second album, "Paranoid", will be reissued on September 29 as both a double-vinyl set and a deluxe three-CD package, according to a press release. The record, which was recorded in eight days, is SABBATH's best-selling effort and was their commercial breakthrough in the U.S. Containing some of the band's biggest songs, such as "Iron Man", "War Pigs" and the title track, "Paranoid"is considered one of heavy metal's most influential and all-time masterpieces. The CD set will contain the original album on one disc and a 1974 quadraphonic mix on the second, while a third CD will feature never-before-released early instrumental versions of six of the album's eight songs and two with alternate lyrics.

"Paranoid" has sold four million copies in the U.S. and was SABBATH's only album to ever reach No. 1 in their native country, the U.K.

Italian techno/rap producer Lou Chano (TRUCEKLAN, MINISTERO DELL'INFERNO, IUS PRIMAE NOCTIS) will make a guest appearance on "Through My Dog's Eyes", the new album from the Italian avant-garde metal band EPHEL DUATH. According to the band, Chano "appears on the song 'Nina', together with crew mates Rough and Fuzzy."

As previously reported, Ben Weinman, founding member and guitarist of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, will also make a guest appearance on "Through My Dog's Eyes". Weinman will compose the electronic parts of the song "Bark Loud".

Weinman commented on his experience working with EPHEL DUATH: "EPHEL DUATH is one of those bands that truly understand the essence of what experimental and fusion music should be about. Touring with them was an amazing experience and it is great to finally be collaborating in this way!"

EPHEL DUATH entered Outer Sound Studios in Rome on July 14 to complete the recording of "Through My Dog's Eyes" with producer Giuseppe Orlando (NOVEMBRE, KLIMT 1918). The drums for the album were recorded by Marco Minnemann (who recently played drums for NECROPHAGIST on their Summer Slaughter tour) at Seacoast Studio in Imperial Beach, California. Mastering for "Through My Dog's Eyes" will take place at Finnvox Studios (HIM, NIGHTWISH) in Helsinki, Finland, while the artwork for the album is being created by Seldon Hunt (NEUROSIS, ISIS, SUNNO)))).

"Torn" was previously described by EVERGREY mastermind Tom S. Englund as a "modern mix of 'In Search Of Truth' and 'Recreation Day'." "The tracks are all guitar-oriented and very atmospheric," he said. "They have exactly the sound that our fans expect from us." According to Englund, the slightly more experimental direction of EVERGREY's previous release, "Monday Morning Apocalypse", has given way again to old strengths and virtues. "Two years ago we needed an album with a slightly different approach and an expensive producer, just to find out how that sort of thing works," he explained. "It was the right album at the time, but now we have returned to our typical trademarks." This is one of the reasons why the tracks on "Torn" were self-produced by Englund together with drummer Jonas Ekdahl. In addition, the band has a new bassist, Fredrik Larsson having been replaced by former STRATOVARIUS musician Jari Kainulainen.

Since the band arrived on the scene in 1998, EVERGREY has brought out six studio albums and one live release. All of them made the Top 20 in the group's native Sweden and the last two cracked the Top 10 (No. 6 and 3, respectively). On top of that, EVERGREY's DVD was No. 1 for four weeks and was nominated for the Swedish Grammy equivalent.

SONS OF SEASONS, the new progressive/symphonic metal band led by keyboardist/guitarist Oliver Palotai (KAMELOT, DORO), has inked a deal with Napalm Records. The group's debut album, "Gods Of Vermin", is scheduled for release in early 2009.

Formed in January 2007, SONS OF SEASONS was launched as a "melting point" for all of Oliver Palotai's skills, as a musicians, composer and producer.

The group's first singer, Tijs Vanneste (OCEANS OF SADNESS), proved to be a great musician, but the band's future touring plans didn't fit the tight working schedule at his job, resulting in his departure. However, some of the songs on SONS OF SEASONS' debut album are said to have been inspired by his ideas.

A bus which was transporting members of DISTURBED's crew ran off the side of Interstate 95 in Florence County, South Carolina after blowing a tire last Thursday (July 31). The vehicle coasted off the shoulder and slid down an embankment before coming to a stop.

Photos of the damage the bus sustained in the crash can be found on tthe blog of Maddie Leiren, the daughter of DISTURBED's guitar tech, who was traveling with the crew at the time of the accident.

At least eight people were on the bus at the time. One person was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries and no band members were on board, bus driver Fred Huffman said.

Former MORBID ANGEL and NOCTURNUS drummer/vocalist Mike Browning has issued a statement regarding what is being billed as a reunion of the "classic lineup" of NOCTURNUS, set to take place in Europe this fall. In a post to to the comments section of BLABBERMOUTH.NET, Browning writes, "I want to be totally up front and honest with everyone that the original lineup will not be touring. My band AFTER DEATH will be doing the tour as NOCTURNUS, we WILL be playing at least 7 of the 10 songs on 'The Key' [NOCTURNUS' classic 'The Key' album] as well as a couple of old MORBID ANGEL songs done the way they were originally written on 'Abominations of Desolation'! Mike Davis was asked and he didn't want to do the tour as he and I were the ones who wrote pretty much everything on 'The Key'. Lou [Louis Panzer, keyboards] and Sean [McNenney, guitar] were not asked to do this. What people will see will be a show that no one else can faithfully perform containing old NOCTURNUS and MORBID ANGEL material that I either wrote or co-wrote. And it will be done the way it was meant to be written and performed, not some contrived 'rock star' version! The tour will be from October 13-27, 13 shows only to be done in Europe because of these U.S. trademark restrictions from the former members who did indeed steal the name and band I created back in 1988."

ONE MAN ARMY AND THE UNDEAD QUARTET, the Swedish band featuring former THE CROWN vocalist Johan Lindstrand, has posted an audio sample of a new song, "Cursed By The Knife", on the group's MySpace page. The track comes off the band's third album, "Grim Tales", which is scheduled for release in October/November via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was recorded at the Black Lounge Studios in Avesta, Sweden with producer Jonas Kjellgren (SCAR SYMMETRY).

According to Spiegel Online, over 75,000 people from all over the world convened in the small German town of Wacken last week for an annual ritual held in celebration of all things heavy metal.

The festival — known as Wacken Open Air — is now in its 19th year, after having been started in 1990 as a small gathering of local heavy metal bands.

In between events, concert-goers drank, played in the copious mud and socialized with the town's 1,800 year-round residents, who have generally come to enjoy the festival's annual arrival.

AVALANCHE, the new project featuring Olof Mörck (NIGHTRAGE, DRAGONLAND), Jake E (ex-DREAM EVIL, DREAMLAND), Andy Solveström (WITHIN Y, EVILDOER, CIPHER SYSTEM) and Morten Lowe Sorensen (THE ARCANE ORDER, SUBMISSION), has posted a third song, "Director's Cut", on the band's MySpace page.

IN FLAMES bassist Peter Iwers and EVERGREY keyboardist Rickard Zander are among the guest musicians who will appear on the upcoming AVALANCHE album, tentatively due in early 2009.

Mörck previously stated about the band: "AVALANCHE has for long been an idea between me and Jake E to break out of the mold of our past projects and create something new and fresh entirely and to give room for ideas not appropriate for the other acts and projects we are part of. The result is an onslaught of soaring melodies, heavy riffing and guttural screams from the netherworld, a result of having three singers in the band; Jake E on clean vocals, cabaret virtuoso Elize on female vocals and Andy on screams. The result is a quite distinct sound, especially combined with the music itself that draws upon influences from a varied spectrum of genres, all to create a thrilling experience for the listener. Another defining feature of AVALANCHE is the idea of a collective — everyone from superstars of the industry to just generally talented people will lend their unique skills to AVALANCHE on the coming album. This, however, won't stop AVALANCHE from being a tour de force in live shows and tours, since the core of this metal machinery is based primarily on the regular members. QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS will release their new album, "The Cosmos Rocks", in Europe on September 15 and the U.S./Canada on October 14 via EMI.

Look for the first plays of the new QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS single on UK radio next week:

The lyrics are about how humanity has changed religion and Gods over the years in order to serve their profits and wishes.
If we don't believe in a religion anymore, the Gods die and turn into myth, stories and historical dust.
The story is told by a God on the verge on getting cast out and forgotten by the people he once created and encouraged.

This is in deed a demo recording and there is much to be said about the production etc. But I had to draw the line somewhere and get on with it.

According to a posting on the MySpace page of the long-running horror-inspired metallers NECROPHAGIA, a new release and tour is in the works for mid-2009. No further details are currently available.

NECROPHAGIA was recently rejoined by Opal Enthroned. She was a member of the band during the period when her now ex-husband Philip Anselmo (PANTERA, DOWN) was playing guitar for NECROPHAGIA.

Opal made her NECRO debut on the "Cannibal Holocaust" EP in 2001. She also worked with NECROPHAGIA mainman Frank "Killjoy" Pucci and Anselmo in the now-defunct raw black metal project VIKING CROWN.

Killjoy and Opal have both stated that the new alliance is extremely inspiring and will see them focusing on some "very, very horror-filled and even creepier tunes" for NECROPHAGIA (as well as two other projects that will be launched at a later date).
