PARADISE LOST Drummer Says New Album Is 'Very Heavy, Very Dark'British gothic metallers PARADISE LOST have set "In Requiem" as the title of their 11th album, due in the U.K. on May 21 via Century Media Records. The artwork for the CD will be created by Seth Siro Anton, who was the artwork designer for the group's last album, "Paradise Lost".
Commented drummer Jeff Singer: "The whole process for 'In Requiem' has been very different to the experience of recording [the self-titled 10th album]. The last album was very much a case of 'go with the flow' as I came in very late with the writing pretty much finished. There were bits and pieces changed during pre production but it was about fitting in the right drum parts without much time to work on them and although I think it is a great album I didn't feel I had time to work with the songs and really create my feel.
"Being the 'newbie' at that time meant just keeping my head down and getting the job done. Two and a half years later and after touring with the band I felt a lot more settled, part of the unit and very much part of the creative process.
"It must be a year now since the first ideas were being sent across but it was around August that the first album pre-production took place. It was clear that the bar had been [raised] in terms of the performance that was needed and without putting too fine a point on it I had some hard work to do. I had four months of worry. Let's pull no punches here, love or hate PARADISE LOST, this is an iconic band and as the drummer I have to be a good representation of the band...and now I had been settled in for three years I had alot to prove! It was clear to me that as a band we were all a lot more focused and we rehearsed a lot harder for this album. Fact is that it shows and I genuinely can't wait for people to hear it.
"At this point I have to mention Rhys [Fulber, producer]. He is a really strong part of the team and is with you all the way. He bolstered me up big time and was totally confident and positive with regard to my performances. This is incredibly important to us delicate flowers that they call musicians....alright drummers! We concentrated very much on getting a great drum sound (thanks Gretsch and Sabian) and trying to get a perfect take during recording as opposed to edits or drop-ins. We also worked harder on tempos to make sure each song had a better flow and it really shows.
"One thing that made me laugh was Nick [Holmes, vocals] mentioning that he and Greg [Mackintosh, guitar] were in the studio, in adjacent rooms all day sending insults on Messenger...it is totally true LOL!!
"So what can you expect? Very heavy, very dark and lots of double bass drums..."

KATATONIA: 'July' Video Posted OnlineKATATONIA's brand new video for the song "July", shot and directed by Charlie Granberg, has been posted online at YouTube.com.
Commented Granberg: "It's basically a perfomance video. But I wanted the feeling of the band playing in a very rough, abandonded or even bombed out house, in an extremely warm country like Mexico or somewere in the middle east. Dark on the inside, but with sunbeams searching their way through the dust, hitting the bandmembers here and there. I really wanted the feeling of the outside world being so much better and brighter than the place the band is in. The biggest challenge with this video I think, was that I wanted to use really warm and grainy colours, wich is kinda rare in this type of music, but at the same time wrap it in a gloomy, apocalyptic feeling. But I think the balance is there and I'm happy the band liked it so much."
In other KATATONIA news, Peaceville has pushed the release date of the physical "July" CD single to April 9, but pre-orders are now being taken from Snapper Music. The digital download was released on February 26 and can be purchased from iTunes, Napster, Sonicstage and Emusic. In addition to the title track, the single includes a brand new/previously unreleased song called "Unfurl", a remix of "Soil's Song" by Krister Linder, and the video for "July",.

EDGUY Frontman On AVANTASIA Project: 'There's No Limits To Our Creativity'EDGUY frontman Tobias Sammet is currently working on the third installment of his solo project AVANTASIA. The album is being produced by Sascha Paeth, who also played the rhythm guitar on the CD. The drums were laid down by KISS/ALICE COOPER drummer Eric Singer and the bass is being handled by Tobias himself.
Commented Sammet: "I can't tell you how happy I am to be able to do this. There is so much creativity in the studio and the material sounds so great. There is so much variety — we got fast songs, mid-tempo songs, a few ballads. There are modern elements, epic elements, classic elements. There's no limits [to] our creativity and I feel blessed that I am allowed to work with the most talented sidekicks I could ever dream of."
The new AVANTASIA album will be a concept album featuring different singers singing different characters in a story. But the concept itself won't be a sequel to the first two AVANTASIA albums.
AVANTASIA's last release was the two-part epic called "The Metal Opera" (issued in 2001 and 2002), which featured an impressive array of guest vocalists playing the various characters of the opera, including Michael Kiske (ex-HELLOWEEN), David DeFeis (VIRGIN STEELE), Sharon Den Adel (WITHIN TEMPTATION), Kai Hansen (GAMMA RAY), André Matos (ANGRA, SHAAMAN), Timo Tolkki (STRATOVARIUS), Rob Rock (WARRIOR), and others.

GOREFEST Begins Recording New AlbumDutch metallers GOREFEST have posted the following message on their official web site:
"We're well into our first week of recording the follow-up to 'La Muerte'. In this week all drum tracks have been recorded. Our drummer Ed [Warby] was on a roll and laid down all those brutal and demanding parts with breath taking ease. We shot some handy cam footage of the drum takes which you can find in the media section of this site. Ed like a fish in the water behind his new Sonor kit, bashing away on those beautiful Amedia cymbals.
"Monday Tue Madsen was over to make drum sounds and on Tuesday we made guitar and bass sound. Next Monday we will start with recording the rhythm guitars and bass guitar. If all goes well, this will take about a week and a half. After that it’s time for extra bits and pieces and the solos. In April JC will go over to the Antfarm studio in Denmark, where the mixing will take place, to record vocals."
GOREFEST's latest CD, "La Muerte", was released in October 2005 via Nuclear Blast Records.

[In addition] the album is due out in March 2007 (third month)."
On the subject of the band's musical approach on the new CD, the group wrote, "Expect something different from this music, heavier music, mature and more introspective lyrics, grandiose symphonic parts, yet still keeping the band roots for writing songs that are accessible and sing-a-long-able."
"Trinity" will mark VISIONS OF ATLANTIS' first release since the addition of professional soprano singer Melissa Ferlaak from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Ferlaak graduated with a master's degree from New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts in 2003 for vocal performance and has worked in the operatic field, most recently as Musetta in "La Boheme", and has been singing with AESMA DAEVA.

VITAL REMAINS Announces Album Title And Track ListingExtreme metal titans VITAL REMAINS have returned with a vicious new slab of blasphemy that promises to strike fear in the heart of the masses. The much-anticipated new album, "Icons of Evil", was produced by the renowned Erik Rutan (CANNIBAL CORPSE, GOATWHORE) and is set for an April 3 release. This offering marks the group's second recording with Glen Benton (DEICIDE) on vocals. Founder Tony Lazaro (guitars) wrote the entire album and handled bass duties for its recording, while Dave Suzuki once again tracked all the drums and lead guitar parts.
"Icons of Evil" track listing ( cover)
01. Where Is Your God Now
02. Icons of Evil
03. Scorned
04. Born To Rape The World
05. Reborn…The Upheaval of Nihility
06. Hammer Down The Nails
07. Shrapnel Embedded Flesh
08. 'Til Death
09. In Infamy
10. Disciples of Hell
Lazaro further describes the new effort: "A big thanks to Erik Rutan, who really worked us to near death in order to get us to deliver our best performances, which we think we did, without a doubt! We thought 'Dechristianize' was a tough album to record, but this effort proved us wrong. This album, hands down, sets the bar for death metal. We think our fans will soon agree without question that this is our 'Reign In Blood'."
Drawing from classic '80s metal bands such as VENOM, BATHORY, MERCYFUL FATE, MORBID ANGEL, DEICIDE and SLAYER, VITAL REMAINS based their survival through a DIY underground approach that earned them a rabid legion of fans. However, after four full-length releases the group's biggest break would come in 2003 as they signed to Century Media and released the genre-defying epic "Dechristianize". It was hailed by critics and fans alike as one of extreme metal's most accomplished and ambitious works yet that ever garnered mainstream acclaim. The album quickly elevated the band into the death metal elite and was supported by four full U.S. tours, further solidifying their status as one of the genre's hardest-working acts.
VITAL REMAINS continues to bring to the table nothing less than barbaric war metal the way it was meant to be: fast, brutal and tasteful. The world of extreme metal is not ready for the savageness that is about to be unleashed upon it.

MY DYING BRIDE Parts Ways With Bassist, Drummer; Replacements Announced U.K. doom metallers MY DYING BRIDE have issued the following update:
"MY DYING BRIDE is sorry to have to say that on January 5, 2007 bassist Adrian Jackson left the band. He has pledged his future in America and has made it quite clear there is no room in his plans for MY DYING BRIDE. We have parted in good faith and wish him luck with his new life out there. It has absolutely no effect on any of the gigs we have confirmed. We have already rehearsed his replacement to gig readiness and she is looking forward to playing for the first time in MY DYING BRIDE. More on his replacement, Lena, soon.
"Secondly we have had to replace long term stand in drummer / thunder truck / Uberlunatic John Bennet due to his work commitments. He is saddened by the fact he cannot drum for MY DYING BRIDE anymore as are we, but we understand that we all have to make a living and wish him luck too in his job.
"It's not all doom and gloom though as we have been rehearsing with excellent drummer Dan Mullins of THINE, BAL-SAGOTH and SERMON OF HYPOCRISY fame and again he too is now at gig readiness. MDB has a new fresh focused feel to it and we are looking forward to the shows with a vengeance."

CALLENISH CIRCLE Calls It QuitsDutch melodic death metallers CALLENISH CIRCLE have issued the following statement:
"After nearly 15 years we've decided to lay our precious CALLENISH CIRCLE to rest. We'll play our last show on Saturday the 10th of March at De Azijnfabriek in Roermond, The Netherlands. This wasn't the easiest decision to make, but in the end, we all agree that CALLENISH CIRCLE has now run its course. We've accomplished everything that we set out to do and even more but now the time has come to move on. We're all very proud of our latest album, '[Pitch.Black.Effects]', and feel that now is a good time to call it a day.
"After all those years the inspiration to keep CALLENISH CIRCLE going was slowly fading away. We always aimed to deliver the goods with the highest quality possible and we simply do not want to continue a band that can't give the essential blood, sweat and tears anymore. We prefer to burn out on a high note now, rather than just slowly fade into obscurity. Some bands linger on for years past their expiration date but CALLENISH CIRCLE will definitely not become one of those bands.
"Over the past 15 years, CALLENISH CIRCLE have left their mark on the worldwide metal scene with 5 albums released, toured with many great bands and played lots of great shows and festivals. It was definitely an interesting journey for all of us, and we look back at our past with absolutely no regrets, only with pride. When we started this band in the early '90-ies we were just a bunch of kids who thought it would be fun to play some cover tunes of our favourite bands at the time, just think of influential bands like DEATH, PESTILENCE, (old) PARADISE LOST and BOLT THROWER. Back then we never could have imagined that, almost 15 years later, we would have released 5 full-length albums of which the last 3 released worldwide on the highly acclaimed Metal Blade Records and that we would have played over 200 shows and festivals all over the world, being our Mexican tour 2006 one of the definite highlights in our career.
"So many of you from all around the world have gotten into our music, and for us musicians playing in a band, that's really what it's all about. Having people from all over the world tell you that they've genuinely been moved by your music is definitely a great thing. We're very pleased that you enjoyed what we created. Those words were always an inspiration to us and we can truly walk away from CALLENISH CIRCLE with our heads held high at this point, no doubt about that.
"But as always... all good things come to an end and we'd like to thank every one of our fans across the globe for their never ending support. You are the main reason why we stuck around for so long. Thank YOU! And ofcourse thanks to everyone else that had a role in making CALLENISH CIRCLE what it is today. You all know who you are."
"Not much more really needs to be said. We hope to see some of you at our last show in Roermond on the 10th of March. Dutch fellow thrashers ENGINE OF PAIN will release their debut album that night and the opening slot is filled by STATE:CHAOS (the new band of former CALLENISH CIRCLE bass player Rocco).
"This will definitely become a night to remember."

New PRIMAL FEAR CD To Feature Duet With EPICA SingerGerman power metallers PRIMAL FEAR have posted the following message on their official web site:
"Sorry for our delay in updating the page with news from the recording session, but a lot of things happened and today we're back with another round of studio news and pictures! The bass guitar recordings were finished last weekend and most of the basic guitar stuff too. At least we are working on final 11 tracks including a 10 minute monster 'Fighting the Darkness'. Mat [Sinner, bass] has injured his left hand yesterday in an accident at the studio. It's not that tragic, that he can't continue to produce the album, but he needs four stiches and a bandage. The doctors have to tell if the SINNER tour has to be postponed... but aside of this, we can report some very creative and lucky moments during the session.
"Simone Simons of EPICA joined us for some sensational vocal work and for the first time in PRIMAL FEAR's career a vocal duet with a female singer. We are very pround about the final version of 'Every Time It Rains', which has a different vibe for PRIMAL FEAR and our fans.
"Ralf Scheepers will continue to track his fantastic vocal work today, while Stefan Leibing will join the band on Thursday to finalize the basic guitars. Orchestra maestro Matthias Ulmer will join the session today to put some finishing touches on the keyboard and orchestra section during the next week!" Other songtitles set to appear on the follow-up to 2005's "Seven Seals" include "Save Me" and "Torn". A summer release via Frontiers Records is expected.
