MASTODON's TROY SANDERS Says His First Show As Bassist For THIN LIZZY Felt 'Like A Dream'
Troy Sanders from Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON played bass for iconic rockers THIN LIZZY during their summer 2019 run of European festival appearances to commemorate 50 years since the formation of the original band and 40 years since the release of the seminal "Black Rose" album.
Sanders joined guitarist Scott Gorham, Darren Wharton on keyboards, Ricky Warwick on lead vocals, Damon Johnson on guitar and JUDAS PRIEST's Scott Travis on drums for several shows in late July and early August, including an August 10 slot at Alcatraz Hard Rock & Metal Festival in Kortrijk, Belgium.
Asked by U.K.'s Kerrang! magazine how "cool" it was getting asked to play bass with THIN LIZZY, Sanders said: "I was in Hamburg, Germany in February, having just finished a show, when my guitarist got a message from Damon Johnson, asking if he could have my number because Scott Gorham was firing up the band for a few shows over the summer, and they wanted me to play bass. I had to sit down for a second and ask if it was real. I've known Damon for a long time, but I never take anything like that for granted. MASTODON will be 20 years old [in 2020], but every time we get together to rehearse, I still feel that fire in my belly as a band. That's special. But to be actually asked to play for THIN LIZZY is a different kind of special. It's humbling on a personal level, too, because I know there are hundreds of excellent bass players out there they could've asked. How and why my name got called first, I don't know. They're one of the greatest rock bands ever, so it really warmed my heart to get that call."
Sanders went on to say that his performance with THIN LIZZY at the Steelhouse Festival was the "best" show he played in 2019. "That first night with THIN LIZZY, on a mountaintop in Wales, was hard to beat," he said. "It was this beautiful setting, this special occasion with maybe 5,000 people watching, and I got to go out, have a good time and smile while watching thousands of people smiling back. The intangible circle of musical magic that's created from a band into a crowd and back felt like it culminated on that mountaintop. I was grinning ear to ear. It was like a dream."
THIN LIZZY peaked in 1976 with its "Jailbreak" album, which went gold in the U.S.
The band's frontman Phil Lynott died on January 4, 1986, at the age of 36.
Gorham launched a new touring version of THIN LIZZY in 1994 with latter-day LIZZY guitarist John Sykes. Several personnel changes followed until Scott finally brought singer Ricky Warwick (frontman for the Scottish band THE ALMIGHTY) and guitarist Damon Johnson (formerly with Alice Cooper) into the fold. | +3

TOMMY THAYER Says KISS Will Add Fresh Songs To Set For Next Leg Of 'End Of The Road' Tour
In an interview with David "Gus" Griesinger of BackstageAxxess at this year's NAMM show in Anaheim, California, KISS guitarist Tommy Thayer spoke about the forthcoming North American leg of the band's "End Of The Road" farewell tour. The trek, which will kick off February 1 in Manchester, New Hampshire, will feature VAN HALEN vocalist David Lee Roth in the support slot.
"First of all, this is a must-see show," Tommy said (see video below). "If you haven't ever seen KISS, this is definitely your last opportunity to come to see the show. It's something you never want to miss. At least once in your lifetime, you've gotta see the show. This show is built, as you've seen, it's the biggest one we've ever done and I'm not just hyping it. It's really incredible. We put a lot of time and effort into preparing for this in the first place. It's really paid off. The reviews, the response from fans, everybody across the board has been phenomenal. The shows have been sold out or close to sold out. I think we've played for almost two million people in 110 shows in 2019. The tour is going to go through 2020 and into '21. Our last show is going to be in New York City on July 21, 2021, but we're not announcing what venue it is yet. We have an end date now that we're going to work toward, so that gives a little more perspective to really this is the end of the road and everybody can see this is the schedule moving forward. Now is the time to come see the show. Even if you saw it last year, we're going to come out with new songs in the set starting February 1 on this leg, and revamping and freshening it up for 2020."
In a 2018 interview with Billboard, frontman Paul Stanley suggested it would be unlikely for KISS to play any obscure songs during their farewell tour.
"For all the audience saying 'When are you going to record a new album or will you play a deep cut?' Why? We have 'Detroit Rock City', 'Love Gun', 'Rock And Roll All Nite', 'Shout It Out Loud', 'Firehouse', 'Hotter Than Hell' and the list goes on and on…. There isn't room for some obscure song. Songs that are obscure are obscure for a reason."
He added, "And if we're going to please a handful of diehards, the real crazy diehards, and have 20,000 other people go, 'What's that?' or "Let's go out and get a Coke,' then we are failing the masses. We wouldn't do that."
KISS's current lineup consists of original members Stanley and Gene Simmons, alongside later band additions, Thayer (since 2002) and drummer Eric Singer (on and off since 1991).
Formed in 1973 by Stanley, Simmons, drummer Peter Criss and lead guitarist Ace Frehley, KISS staged its first "farewell" tour in 2000, the last to feature the group's original lineup.
In its 46-year career, KISS has accumulated 23 gold and platinum albums — more than any other U.S. band. | +2

IMMORTAL GUARDIAN Enters The Studio; New Album Due This Fall
The virtuosic “super metal” group, Immortal Guardian, have started recording the follow-up to their 2018 sophomore album (and M-Theory Audio debut), Age Of Revolution. A fall release is expected.
For the new album, Immortal Guardian has once again enlisted the expertise of Age Of Revolution engineer Joshua Lopez to assist with the tracking of the album. With the majority of parts recorded at the band’s new Las Vegas headquarters and drums being tracked remotely in Montreal by recent addition Justin Piedimonte, it made for an interesting workflow between band members and engineer. Amidst the obstacles of distance, the group prevailed and made something truly unique and representative of themselves and the current state of the world.
Says Brazilian-born vocalist Carlos Zema, “This is a very different album from our previous releases in that there’s a wide range of emotions involved. We’ve experienced our fair share of loss since the last release and a lot of life lessons were poured into this album, giving it a very real and personal vibe. From a technical vocal aspect, this is the first album I’ve ever recorded where I’ve spanned five octaves as a singer, and I’m excited for the world to hear the message and sound we’ve created together as a group."
Adds guitarist/keyboardist Gabriel Guardian, “The recording process has been interesting to say the least. Working with a drummer over 2,000 miles away has its obstacles, but Justin and his drum engineer Jesse Zito made the experience way smoother than we imagined. Thanks to technology, video calls and hundreds of back-and-forth messages, we pulled off something that wouldn't have been possible years ago. We’re incredibly proud of the new material and are looking forward to wrapping up the final mix with Joshua and getting some new music out for all the Guardians to hear!"
In 2018 and 2019, Immortal Guardian dropped jaws during national tours with Marty Friedman and Exmortus, where the extreme progressive/power metal group showcased virtuosity that’s second to none. The band also made waves with their must-see, special effects-heavy music video for “Stardust”, which combined the action-packed narrative of Armageddon with a telenovela-worthy love story.
Immortal Guardian will return to the road this spring, when the band will support PowerGlove on a six-week North American tour. The trek will see Gabriel - who performed impressive live guitar/keyboard demonstrations for Peavey throughout the recent NAMM convention - perform with both bands, as he’s done in the past when the two groups have shared stages.

SIXX:A.M. Releases Music Video For 'Talk To Me'
"Talk To Me", the new video from SIXX:A.M., can be seen below. The track, originally released last September, invites each of us to take the first step toward mutual understanding and healing using the power of conversation.
"Talk To Me", written by MÖTLEY CRÜE founding member and Global Recovery Initiative Foundation board member Nikki Sixx with his band SIXX:A.M., received its premiere on at an Advertising Week NY panel on the critical role brands can play to help combat the opioid crisis. Celebrity influencers, government agency and global business leaders armed Advertising Week NY attendees with creative assets and tools to help fight the stigma associated with this epidemic in their communities. The song was created by SIXX:A.M. in support of the #TalkToMe campaign.
Last year, Sixx revealed that SIXX:A.M. had recorded four new songs.
The band, which also features guitarist DJ Ashba, singer James Michael and drummer Dustin Steinke, hadn't released any new music in two years and had been on hiatus since 2017. Ashba has since formed a new band, PYROMANTIC.
Sixx spoke about SIXX:A.M.'s future plans in March 2019 while promoting the MÖTLEY CRÜE biopic, "The Dirt", and discussing the long-awaited Broadway adaptation of his memoir, "The Heroin Diaries".
"I've just done four new songs with SIXX:A.M.," Nikki told BUILD Series at the time. "Really magical. I think we're gonna go in and record another song as well. We have a greatest-hits [collection coming out] that's gonna tie in to the musical. And if there is time, maybe, for SIXX:A.M., we might go out and do — I don't know — a couple of weeks', three weeks' worth of shows, maybe do festivals next year or something."
When "The Heroin Diaries" was published, it was accompanied by a soundtrack by SIXX:A.M. The 13 tracks on the record each correspond to one month of Sixx's supposed diary, which he kept from 1986 to 1987 and formed the basis for the autobiography.
SIXX:A.M. embarked on its first North American headlining tour in support of the band's third album, "Modern Vintage", in 2015.
The 10th-anniversary editions of SIXX:A.M.'s "The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack" was made available in October 2017.
SIXX:A.M.'s latest album, "Vol. 2, Prayers For The Blessed", was released in November 2016 via Eleven Seven Music. The disc was written and recorded at the same time as "Vol. 1, Prayers For The Damned", released earlier that same year, and it acted as a companion piece to the first chapter. | +5

TOOL's DANNY CAREY On NEIL PEART: 'The Way He Played Was A Big Influence On What I Wanted To Do'
TOOL drummer Danny Carey spoke about Neil Peart's influence on his style backstage after he accepted the band's Grammy on Sunday night (January 26) for "Best Metal Performance". According to The Pulse Of Radio, he said: "Neil was so defined and he was such a precise composer in the way he played that that was a big influence on what I wanted to do with the band — to be in a band that did compositions, and it wasn't just jamming and stuff like that. So, luckily, I found the right bandmates to do that with."
In his Grammy acceptance speech, Carey also cited the influence of LED ZEPPELIN's John Bonham and jazz legend Tony Williams.
Peart died on January 7 in Santa Monica, California after a three-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. The iconic RUSH drummer was 67 years old.
TOOL won the Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance" for "7empest", a track from its 2019 album "Fear Inoculum". Carey and bassist Justin Chancellor accepted the award in the pre-telecast ceremony.
TOOL previously won three Grammy Awards: "Best Metal Performance" in 1998 for "Ænima", "Best Metal Performance" in 2002 for "Schism" and "Best Recording Package" in 2007 for "10,000 Days".
TOOL is finishing up the most recent North American leg of its world tour in support of "Fear Inoculum", and will head to Australia and New Zealand next month before kicking off a new round of U.S. dates on March 9 in Spokane, Washington. | +4

IRON MAIDEN's STEVE HARRIS Remembers Late RUSH Drum Legend NEIL PEART - "A Fantastic Talent And Sadly Missed"
In Martin Popoff's upcoming BraveWords feature on British Lion, the side project of Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris, he speaks to Harris about late Rush drummer Neil Peart, who passed away on January 7 after a three-year battle with brain cancer (glioblastoma).
“I never met Neil,” answers Steve, asked for his thoughts on the passing of Peart, an icon of progressive metal, as is, really, Steve Harris. “I’ve played tennis with Geddy (Lee) and Alex (Lifeson), because I’m a good friend of Andy Curran from Coney Hatch. He’s worked for many years with Rush, so we end up playing doubles in tennis and stuff. So I’ve met them, and really lovely guys, and good tennis players too. But, you know, I never met Neil. It’s just one of those things. Sometimes, some bands, you kind of meet on the road and at festivals, this, that and the other, but some bands you never cross paths with. And he was one of those people. Like AC/DC, for example - I’ve met Brian Johnson once, but I never really met the rest of the band. And yet the amount of touring that both bands do (laughs) - Maiden and AC/DC - you’d think we’d cross paths somewhere or another, but we haven’t. It’s quite strange. It is what it is. Loads of musicians I’ve met, but that’s just the way it goes.”
“But Neil, well, it’s just awful, really. Very sad. Huge talent, of course. I feel sorry, obviously, for the family, and obviously his band members have been put in a really awkward situation. But yeah, what a fantastic talent and sadly missed.”
Popoff's British Lion feature will be available in full, in the coming days.

MACHINE HEAD Frontman ROBB FLYNN - "I Never Thought We'd Make It 25 Years" (Video)
Robbs MetalWorks met up with Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn in San Antonio, TX at The Aztec Theater on January 21st. The interview, found below, covered a wide range of topics including the end of the band's Phil Demmel / Dave McClain era, Flynn's mindset and the subsequent success of Burn My Eyes, how Logan Mader (guitars) Chris Kontos (drums) came back to the fold for the 25th Anniversary of the album, the celebration tour, new Machine Head members Vogg (Decapitated) and Matt Alston (Devilment), new music, his No Fucking Regrets podcast, and much more.
Flynn: "I never thought we'd make 25 years. I remember when we dropped Burn My Eyes, a record company guy came up to me and said 'Yeah, I can see you guys lasting five years...' and it wasn't meant as a compliment. I was like 'Five years? That's a long time.' We were playing music that wasn't on the radio, music that was heavy and aggressive and wasn't going to be picked up by the majority. Here we are 25 years later and I'm so fucking grateful to the incredible fans supporting us."

Fluid Existential Inversions features some of the most dramatic and epic sounds of the band's career.
"We pushed ourselves to be bigger and better, musically speaking, and to me that's the essence of progressive music," states guitarist/vocalist Sacha Dunable. "On this album, there are drums played in ways I've never heard before. There are synths used in contexts I've never heard before. Intronaut has the most unique bass player in all of heavy metal as far as I'm concerned, and I even practiced guitar to get myself out of my comfort zone. So I think we progressed and made the best album ever."

It's been a five-year gap since 2015's The Direction Of Last Things, the longest between any two Intronaut records, but with good reason.
"Some of this music was written within a week of the last record being released, and we originally wanted to get into the studio to make this album back in early 2017, but I think the band was kind of burnt out, and I personally was definitely burnt out, and we decided to take a year off before committing to a new album and the touring stuff that comes with it. After a little time off, I kept writing on my own and I realized I love making this music whether we're an active band or not."
A change in the unit's ranks set things back another year, but soon enough, they were back on track. The addition of drummer Alex Rudinger (The Faceless, Whitechapel) to the Intronaut lineup definitely played a key part in how the record came together, Dunable praising his obsessive work ethic and a "dedication to his craft like I've never seen before." With all the players in place, it was a case of getting down to work and creating the ultimate Intronaut album - which features keyboards for the first time in the band's history.
When it came time to record Fluid Existential Inversions, Intronaut once again teamed up with producer Josh Newell and spent a month locked in the studio with him. They invited previous collaborator Ben Sharp - aka Cloudkicker - to be a part of the process, penning one of the main riffs of closer "Sour Everythings" and playing some guitar on both that track and "The Cull". When it came to mixing the record, the band reached out to Kurt Ballou (Converge, High On Fire), resulting in a unique finished product that stands apart from their catalogue.

ANVIL Frontman Says Metal Bands Capable Of Filling Arenas 'Will Become Something Of The Past'
"The Classic Metal Show" recently conducted an interview with frontman Steve "Lips" Kudlow of Canadian metal legends ANVIL. You can listen to the entire chat below. A few excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).
On whether there will be another wave of metal bands able to ascend to an arena-level status to take the place of METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN and JUDAS PRIEST upon their retirement:
Lips: "There won't be. That will become something of the past. There's no such thing, and there is no infrastructure to create such a thing again. Once this era ends, it's over. That's it. Name one band — [there is] not one that is in their 20s filling arenas. It's not like 35, 40 years ago, when IRON MAIDEN started to make it, and JUDAS PRIEST; they were filling arenas, and they were in their 20s. It doesn't exist today. It's gone."
On what drives ANVIL to write and record new albums when the music business is in decline:
Lips: "You're right — there's no real record business and there is no money in royalties. But there is money and [a way] to make a living in playing live and selling merchandise. What the music has become, it's become your advertising jingle to sell t-shirts. [Laughs] Beyond that, there is no business. Streaming is now the be-all, end-all. The only physical sales are usually vinyl, and people are buying vinyl more out of collecting it rather than what they're using to listen to it with. To listen to it, you're better off using a CD, making files on your computer, or downloading it. Then you've got the highest-quality audio, but let's face it: vinyl is not the finest audio quality. [Laughs] They didn't create CD and digital sound for no reason. There's a lot of guys who want to argue that fact. Go ahead. Don't argue with me. Argue with the scientists that figured out how to get 20 to 20,000 Hz perfect, then tell me that vinyl does that and I'd say, 'No. It does not.' That's scientific and that's proof and that's the end of it. So, whatever you want to think and whatever you want to say or whatever your opinion, it's only an opinion. It's not based on anything but an opinion rather than facts. Frequency response is a frequency response and numbers don't lie. [Laughs]"
On why ANVIL continues to make full albums:
Lips: "I want to go tour. I want to go and make a living. I want to go and have fun. [Laughs] What other reason could you ever have for doing it?"
On how ANVIL funds the recording of their studio albums:
Lips: "We're a brand name getting an advance from a label; [that's]generally how we've been able to do it. That's been no problem. We did use Pledge [Music] for the last couple of albums, but they went and ripped off a whole bunch of bands and went out of business and ran with the money, so that doesn't seem like such a good idea anymore. It's certainly worked amazing, and, in fact, we were in the black before the album came out, the last couple of albums. I mean, I guess you could say the same thing about this one ['Legal At Last'], but it's a little bit different in the level. I'm not holding cash, but having said that, it's really tough. You break even. You break even. It's like I said, you're creating music to sort of boost your business for selling merchandise and to get yourself hired to play live. Ultimately, that's where you're making your money from. Thank goodness that recording doesn't cost an arm and a leg like it used to. There is no funding for it. Where are you going to get the money from? You can barely generate enough sales. These days, like the label that I'm signed to [Germany's AFM Records], I would imagine that they're going to do okay because there's going to be a certain amount of CDs sold. But moreover, there's going to be a lot of vinyl sold, and they're really going all out. They've got a number of different versions of the album coming out and different colors of vinyl. They're not being foolish. They know what they have to do in order to sell product. They'll recoup the money that they gave us to record it. Of course, for us, we're going to sell thousands of t-shirts. I'm going to make a living and I got hundreds and hundreds of shows to do this year. No problem on that level. It all works out. But for a lot of other bands, the bands that aren't a brand name, this, what I'm talking about, is a dream. That's pretty much a dream to make that come true, to make what I'm saying come true, man; [it's] that tough. I feel very, very fortunate of what's happened with my career, although some would say, 'Hey, man. You guys have been through hell.' I don't think I've been through hell like what a lot of bands are going through today. I'm very grateful for what I have and what I've got going. So that's how I feel about it. I'm having a great time. It's a great way to retire from hard, physical labor, like doing deliveries for a catering company. I don't have to do that anymore and I haven't had to do it for the last 13 years. I think I'm doing very well and I'm a very, very content and happy individual, I'm glad to say."
On the musical direction of "Legal At Last":
Lips: "The diversity — it's a massive, diverse album, particularly the different aspects of what metal is. It's like all the different facets. Each song is its own unique little thing. It's not a one-feel album. It's extremely diverse in keys, in pitch, in tempos, subject matter. That's actually pretty remarkable, really, yet, somehow, it's all ANVIL. You're going to find flavors of BLACK SABBATH, you're going to find flavors of DEEP PURPLE, you're going to find flavors of, I don't know, TED NUGENT. There's all kinds of little flavors from all over the eras of rock and metal in this album. It's not one-dimensional. It's very, very multi-dimensional. It's quite unique. It's quite interesting."
"Legal At Last" is due on February 14 via AFM Records as a digipak, on digital, black vinyl and some limited colored vinyl. ANVIL recorded the new disc at Soundlodge studios in Rhauderfehn in the northwest of Germany.
Though initially a four-piece band, ANVIL's current lineup includes Kudlow, drummer Robb Reiner and bassist Chris Robertson.
ANVIL gained popularity and new fans since the 2008 theatrical documentary "Anvil: The Story Of Anvil", which is currently available on Netflix.

STEVE HARRIS Says IRON MAIDEN Gets More Radio Airplay Now Than It Ever Did
In a recent interview with Katherine Turman of "Nights With Alice Cooper", IRON MAIDEN bassist Steve Harris discussed the differences in tastes between his native United Kingdom and the United States, where he is currently touring with his BRITISH LION side project.
"It's very different," he said (see video below). "U.K. is such a small country. You can drive 50 miles to another venue. Here, you drive 500 miles to another venue and still keep going. It's a vast, vast country, so it's a whole different thing going on with how you get things across to people. Obviously, radio is important to all of us. Having said that, MAIDEN never got much radio play, but we still had some things like that for the tours, but we never really got much play. We probably get more play now than we ever did, because we've been around for a long time and they tend to play old stuff. It's difficult, I think, for even new bands to get played anywhere as well. If I got played with BRITISH LION, I'd take it all day long because it's nice. It's quite funny in a weird way if we did actually get some sort of play because we never really had it with MAIDEN. That would be quite ironic."
Harris was then asked whether he discusses BRITISH LION with his MAIDEN bandmates. With the exception of Harris and BRITISH LION, the members of MAIDEN have not been recently active on the side-project front. The status of vocalist Bruce Dickinson's solo career remains uncertain, while guitarist Adrian Smith dabbled in the short-lived PRIMAL ROCK REBELLION with SIKTH vocalist Mikee Goodman, releasing just one album, 2012's "Awoken Broken".
"We don't really talk about it, really," Harris said. "We're all so busy doing our different things. I think the things that people are doing outside of it, don't really talk about that stuff. It's just private stuff and everyone else is doing their own thing. If we wanted to talk about it, I'll talk about it, and if you want to come to a gig, that's fine, too. It's not something we really discuss."
BRITISH LION kicked off its first U.S. tour on January 18 at Ace Café in Orlando, Florida. The trek will hit a number of cities, including San Antonio, Dallas, Memphis, Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale, before concluding on February 20 in New York.
BRITISH LION's second album, "The Burning", was released on January 17 in digipack CD, double gatefold vinyl and digital download formats via Explorer1 Music (E1). Recorded, engineered and mixed at Barnyard Studios by Tony Newton and produced by Harris, "The Burning" is crammed with powerful hard rock melodies.
BRITISH LION comprises vocalist Richard Taylor, guitarists David Hawkins and Grahame Leslie, Harris on bass and keyboards and drummer Simon Dawson.

POST MALONE 'Had No Idea' OZZY OSBOURNE's Condition Was That Serious
Post Malone says that Ozzy Osbourne is "going to keep kicking ass," calling his recent collaborator "so strong."
The rapper made his comments to Rolling Stone a week after the BLACK SABBATH singer revealed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
Malone, who shared the stage with Osbourne at the American Music Awards in late November, admitted that he "had no idea" the legendary heavy metal frontman's condition was that serious. "Working with him and hanging out with him and being around him, you can't tell," Malone said. "You can tell he has a little difficulty getting around, but he's so strong."
Post said he is looking forward to more music from the 71-year-old, whose new album, "Ordinary Man", is due out on February 21. "I know he's been working on a new project with a bunch of my friends, [and] I'm really excited for him because he's so passionate about it and it sounds incredible; he sounds incredible," he said.
Last week, Ozzy's wife Sharon explained to "Good Morning America" that Ozzy has "PRKN 2, which is a form of Parkinson's. There's so many different types of Parkinson's. It's not a death sentence by any stretch of the imagination, but it does affect certain nerves in your body. It's like you have a good day, a good day and then a really bad day."
Sharon said that Ozzy will head to Switzerland in April to see a professor who specializes in helping people with their immune systems, in order to distinguish between her husband's symptoms. Sharon remarked: "We're going to go wherever we can go to seek answers," to which Ozzy added: "We're lucky enough to be able to afford to do that."
Ozzy is scheduled to return to North American arenas for another leg of his "No More Tours 2" tour this spring.

MEGADETH Joined By DAVE MUSTAINE's Daughter ELECTRA For 'À Tout Le Monde' Performance In Paris (Video)
Electra Mustaine, the 21-year-old daughter of MEGADETH frontman Dave Mustaine, joined the band on stage earlier tonight (Tuesday, January 28) Le Zénith in Paris, France to sing a duet with her father on the classic MEGADETH song "À Tout Le Monde". Fan-filmed video footage of her appearance can be seen below.
Back in 2013, then-15-year-old Electra, who is an aspiring singer, performed her version of "À Tout Le Monde" with Jason Kertson, the grandson of Rob Lind, a member of THE SONICS, at several live appearances, including on King 5's "New Day" TV show. Three years later, she recorded a cover of another MEGADETH track, "I Thought I Knew It All", which originally appeared on the band's 1994 album "Youthanasia".
"Being on stage is so addicting," Electra said in a 2016 interview. "It's a high that you can't shake.
"Music is in my blood," she added. "I just interpret it much differently [from the way my father does]."
Electra told Rolling Stone Country that she wanted to cover "I Thought I Knew It All" because she felt "it'd be a great tribute to MEGADETH fans for all the years of support. I wanted to say thank you, because, honestly, if it weren't for MEGADETH fans, I wouldn't be able to try to fulfill my dreams now," she explained. "I thought, let's show everyone this is where I come from, and yes, I am Dave Mustaine's daughter, but look what I can do with it. We tried to make it organic, raw and vocally driven."
MEGADETH is currently on the road in Europe as the support act for FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH. The trek kicked off on January 20 in Helsinki, Finland and will conclude on February 22 in Sofia, Bulgaria. The Helsinki concert was MEGADETH's first since Dave Mustaine was diagnosed with throat cancer and its first live appearance in 15 months.
The 58-year-old MEGADETH leader revealed his cancer diagnosis last June on social media. Five months later, he gave an interview to Rolling Stone in which he said that he wasn't officially in remission but that he had finished the necessary treatment and had started rehabilitation. He also credited his faith for getting him through the ordeal.
MEGADETH has been working on its 16th album, which bassist David Ellefson said is due out early next year.

PANTERA Surpasses 1 Billion Streams
PANTERA's social media manager has shared a graphic indicating that the band has surpassed one billion streams across Amazon, Apple, Deezer, Google and Spotify. An accompanying caption reads: "Thank you all for listening!"
Drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott and his brother, guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, formed PANTERA in the mid-eighties in Texas. The band recorded four independent albums before its 1990 major label debut, "Cowboys From Hell", introduced a heavier sound and made them a favorite with metal fans. 1994's "Far Beyond Driven" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 without benefit of a commercial hit single.
When PANTERA broke up in the early 2000s due to tensions between the Abbotts and singer Philip Anselmo, the brothers started a new band called DAMAGEPLAN. But that came to an end on December 8, 2004, when Darrell Abbott was shot dead onstage at the age of 38 by a deranged gunman as the band performed at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio. Vinnie never spoke with Anselmo again after his brother's death, reportedly feeling that some things Anselmo said about Darrell in the press may have set the killer off.
A few years ago, bassist Rex Brown spoke to the "Do You Know Jack?" radio show about PANTERA's commercial success following the release of "Cowboys From Hell". He said: "Everything was kind of changing at that point. All the hair bands and all that kind of stuff. Everybody was kind of stale. If you think about just songs in general, there were some pretty good songs that the look kind of took away from all that, 'cause you got lumped in with all that kind of crap. I'm not saying we did. But we just came around at a time that we saw a crack and we slipped through it, and we put a lot of hard work and a lot of touring [into it]."
He continued: "Those first two records ['Cowboys From Hell' and 1992's 'Vulgar Display Of Power'], we toured nonstop. We had 32 days off on the 'Cowboys From Hell' tour, and that was the total time period between 18 months on, and then directly back in the studio."
"We just came in at a time when people needed us. We would stay out in the parking lots until six in the morning signing autographs. I think that really made a big, huge difference between us and other bands that were just, you know, 'go on the bus and bye.' You know, you meet one guy, and he goes, 'Man, those guys were cool.' And he tells another friend, and it gets around like that.
"We were the biggest underground band of the '90s," he added. "We didn't have a lot of MTV [support], we didn't have any radio play. Now you go to any sporting event and hear one of our songs at a football game, which is great, but they wouldn't touch it back then. So we just kind of [flew] by the seat of our pants and kind of D.I.Y., and just toured our butts off and worked really, really hard."
Thank you all for listening! ??

AYREON Launch Official Live Video For "Garden Of Emotions"; More Details Revealed For Into The Electric Castle Live And Other Tales
If the bedrock of progressive rock is to throw caution to the wind and to indulge your wildest musical flights of fancy, then Arjen Anthony Lucassen is a modern-day titan of the genre.
On April 10, Music Theories Recordings/Mascot Label Group release Ayreon - Electric Castle Live And Other Tales, a 3 LP/2CD+DVD/BD set of last year’s spectacular live performance of the third Ayreon album ‘nto The Electric Castle. Over four nights at Tilburg’s 013 venue (the scene of Lucassen’s Ayreon Universe series of live shows in 2017) Lucassen, his band and one of modern progressive music’s most emphatic of casts celebrated the 20th anniversary of ‘Into the Electric Castle’ in front of 12,000 adoring fans from 64 different countries who had flown in from around the world.
“Because it was the 20th anniversary of the album, and we’d just remixed and re-released it, we figured it was the perfect moment to perform this live”, says Lucassen. “The Ayreon Universe shows were such a fantastic experience for everyone involved, and I’d had loads of requests for more live shows, so we decided to perform the entire ‘Electric Castle’ album back at the 013, and also play one track from each of my side projects billed as ‘Other Tales’.”
Released in 1998, Into The Electric Castle is your classic tale of an epic quest. Set in “no time and no space”, it tells the story of eight individuals who are guided by a mysterious voice and tasked with finding the mysterious Electric Castle. The original album features amongst others Fish (the Highlander), Lucassen (the Hippie), Edwin Balogh (The Roman), Anneke van Giersbergen (the Egyptian), Damian Wilson (the Knight) and Edward Reekers (the Futureman), all of whom repeated their performances for the live spectacular.
Also, among the 22 musicians and singers who made up the impressive cast list were long-time Lucassen collaborators Thijs Van Leer (Focus), Simone Simons (Epica), John Jaycee Cuijpers (Praying Mantis), Marcela Bovio and musicians Joost van den Broek, Johan van Stratum, Marcel Singor, Ferry Duijsens, Bob Wijtsma and Ben Mathot. Star Trek actor John De Lancie (Q) appears as the narrator.
Having made a name for himself in the 1980s with Dutch hard rock bands Bodine and Vengeance, and with his first solo album in 1993, it is with Ayreon that Lucassen has truly made a name for himself as a composer of unbridled imagination and creativity.
Having set out his stall with the first two Ayreon albums The Final Experiment (1995) and Actual Fantasy (1996), as a creator of vivid musical works built around some of the finest talent in the prog and rock worlds, everything seemed to align perfectly with 1998’s Into The Electric Castle.
“I poured my heart and soul into it”, says Lucassen of the original album. “Investing everything I had both financially and creatively, and enlisted the best instrumentalists and singers I could find in the world at that time. When making the album I was unconstrained by any musical or stylistic boundaries and incorporated many of my favourite musical styles. ‘Into The Electric Castle’ received an overwhelmingly positive reception from both the press and the fans. This firmly established the Ayreon name, making Ayreon the perfect project to pour all of my time and creative energy into.”
Although best known as a studio-based musician, Lucassen slowly countered his fear of performing live when he first joined long-time collaborator Anneke van Giersbergen for some live dates in 2015, before tackling the more elaborate theatre staging of his 2004 Ayreon album The Human Equation in Rotterdam over four nights the same year (on which he served as special advisor). He went even further in 2017 when he appeared on stage with his star-studded ‘Ayreon Universe’ shows at Tilburg’s 013.
“I get absolutely crippling stage fright”, he says. “Up to the night before the Tilburg shows, I was having dreadful panic attacks. But it’s all for a good cause!”
Creating a live show for Into The Electric Castle seemed like the logical next step, and the four 2019 shows were a resounding success, captured for posterity in Ayreon - Electric Castle Live And Other Stories. In fact, it all went so well, that Lucassen is taking the show to headline the prestigious German progressive rock festival Night Of The Prog in June of this year.
“I just love recording my various projects in the studio,” he concurs, “but I’m not a live performer. I’m the guy who comes up with the ideas, sees the big picture, and puts it all together. So, I’m glad that so many incredible musicians helped me bring my music to the stage.”

Over the course of the past several years, Ontario, Canada’s Sumo Cyco have proven themselves as one of, if not the, hardest working band in the heavy music underground - garnering an undeniable following of fans with their impressive mixture of influences ranging from metal to pop and everything in between. Celebrated for their DIY attitude, viral savvy and explosive live performances that continue to convert new audiences around the world, Sumo Cyco have somehow maintained their status as the industry’s best kept secret - until now.
After witnessing their live performances, it’s immediately clear that Sumo Cyco is lightning in a bottle. Napalm Records has taken notice and is pleased to announce that the band has officially signed a worldwide contract.
Sumo Cyco says regarding the signing: “We have been patiently waiting for the right moment and partners to collaborate with, so we’re so pleased to announce that we have found a great fit with Napalm Records and could not be more excited about what we will accomplish together.”
After supporting massive metal band and new labelmates Jinjer in North America and selling out several dates of their UK headline tour in November and December 2019, Sumo Cyco are dominating 2020 on their first tour of the year. As those in-the-know are already aware, Sumo Cyco frontwoman Skye “Sever” Sweetnam is anything but new to the game. Even before opening for Britney Spears on tour as a teen, the Juno nominee and former Capitol Records pop artist always knew that music of a heavier nature was her calling, so she left her bubble-gum past behind and formed Sumo Cyco - the perfect vehicle to embrace her rock alter ego and retain full artistic control.
Since forming in 2011, Sumo Cyco have performed at massive festivals across the globe, including stops at Download Festival (Kerrang! Avalanche Stage), the Vans Warped Tour (Kevin Says Stage), Sound of Music (Main Stage), WTFest (Main Stage), Planet Rockstock, Winter Rocks (Sheffield UK) Canadian Music Week, NXNE and many more. The band has shared stages with bands such as The Offspring, Coal Chamber, Our Lady Peace, Jinjer, CKY, Hollywood Undead, Nonpoint, The Birthday Massacre and Fozzy.
As of 2020, Sumo Cyco have released two full-length albums, Lost in Cyco City and Opus Mar. The band has attracted several millions of views and counting via their self-produced/directed, grindhouse-inspired cinematic music videos, and have won awards such as "Best Female-Fronted" band at the Toronto Independent Music Awards, top finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition, Indie Week Canada, “Best of the Fest” (prize included a trip to play Indie Week Ireland) in 2014 as well as Best Hard/Loud Recording at the Hamilton Music Awards 2015.

ARCHSPIRE Streaming “Remote Tumor Seeker” Bass Playthrough Video
Archspire bassist Jared Smith has shared a bass play-thru video for the song "Remote Tumor Seeker," which is taken from the band's 2017 JUNO-Nominated release, Relentless Mutation.
Archspire recently partnered up with Sheet Happens to release the full bass and guitar transcription for their latest full-length, Relentless Mutation. The Printed & Digital Books come with an instant download pack containing the Print-Ready Guitar Book PDF (eBook) and the Complete Guitar Pro files. Purchase the transcription here.
Additionally, Archspire have recently made both national and international headlines for being the perfect musical template for the creation of Artificially Intelligent death metal.
Dadabots is special artificial intelligent (AI) software that creates music. The software, developed by Berkley College of Music graduates Zack Zukowski and CJ Carr, is built upon a "recurrent neural network" that receives data and then uses it to interpret musical sequences on its own. Simply stated, the software teaches itself how to compose music based on the work of an existing band as its data-set.
After several failed attempts at creating stable, listenable death metal, the creators turned to the music of Archspire, which ended up being the perfect template to generating metal tunes via artificial intelligence.
"The neural net we used listened to 'Relentless Mutation' over and over again," explains Zukowski. "All raw audio, no tabs, no midi. It generates what it thinks it hears and tunes itself until it begins to intimate the sounds from the original album. After generating, it randomly stitches the audios together, refills the buffer, and streams it with ffmpeg. Repeat."
He continues, "The remarkable part is the high quality-to-shit ratio. We tried this with 100 albums and found that Archspire's music made for the most interesting bot. Zero curation was necessary. Everything it generates sounds good to us. You're hearing everything it makes. Our theory is the faster the blast beats, the more stable the net. Archspire is absurdly fast - they are basically machines. So far, we haven't found anything that works better."
Archspire adds, "We've been hearing about this 'AI that's trained on Archspire writing death metal' over the past few weeks. Well, here's the thing: We actually aren't surprised about this. We've been utilizing very similar technology to write our music this entire time. The program we've been using? It's called T.O.B.I. It stands for:
Technically
Outrageous
Boner
Inducer
"Tobi has been part of our writing process since 2009, and while you may notice that he takes on a physical form as guitarist in the band, rest assured under those tight fitting clothes, he's more machine than man."

RUSH – St. Catharines Council Moves To Rename Lakeside Park Pavilion After NEIL PEART
A motion to begin the process to rename the Lakeside Park Pavilion after legendary Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart passed unanimously at St. Catharines city council, reports iHeartRadio.
The motion from Walter Sendzik has asked staff to prepare a report providing guidance about how to move forward with any future tributes.
"So there are members of our community, and I know there are two members here today, who are actively engaged in looking at a statue or sculpture in recognition of Neil Peart's work that would be placed at Lakeside Park, but it will have to come with a staff report. And that will come with this staff report as well."
In the wake of Neil Peart’s death, interest in Rush — the band that featured his virtuosic drumming and thought-provoking lyrics for more than 40 years — has surged, propelling their 1976 prog-rock masterpiece 2112 onto the Rolling Stone Top 200 Albums chart.
From January 10 through January 16, the band sold 24,600 albums in the U.S., an increase of more than 1,000 percent compared with the previous week. The 2112 LP led the way, making it to Number 45 on the RS 200, moving 12,800 total album units last week. (The Rolling Stone Top 200 Albums chart tracks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. by a combination of digital and physical album sales, digital song sales, and audio streams.)
Overall, the band’s on-demand audio streams jumped 340 percent week on week, totaling more than 16 million from January 10th through January 16th. Synth-rock anthem “Tom Sawyer” led with 3.1 million, while FM staples “Limelight” and “The Spirit Of Radio” followed with 1.8 million and 1.6 million, respectively. The wildly technical instrumental “YYZ” pulled in just under 1.6 million streams last week. Song sales also jumped by a whopping 1,575 percent, with the band selling 28,000 track downloads.
Rush bandmates Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson posted the following message in the wake of flood of tributes honouring Neil Peart:

RATT: 'The Atlantic Years 1984-1990' Box Set Due In March
A CD box set containing the five albums RATT recorded for Atlantic Records will be released on March 27 via Cherry Red Records' HNE Recordings. The collection, titled "Ratt: The Atlantic Years 1984-1990", is housed in a clamshell and includes several single edits as bonus tracks.
Taking inspiration from AEROSMITH and VAN HALEN, RATT originally formed in Hollywood in the mid-1970s, eventually releasing the independent "Dr. Rock" single in 1980, before contributing a track to the highly influential "Metal Massacre" compilation in1981, and their independently released, self-titled mini-album in 1983. But RATT finally made their mark when Stephen Pearcy (vocals), Robbin Crosby (guitar), Warren DeMartini (guitar), Juan Croucier (bass) and Bobby Blotzer (drums) signed to Atlantic Records in 1984 for the "Out Of The Cellar" LP. Their tuneful hard rock found favour with both radio and on MTV, where clips for singles "Round And Round" and "Back For More" received heavy rotation. A big influence on the growing glam and hair metal scene based around L.A.'s Sunset Strip, "Out of The Cellar" would soon reach triple platinum status. The radio edit of "Round And Round" is included as a bonus track.
In 1985, RATT followed up their full-length debut with "Invasion Of Your Privacy". Produced by Beau Hill (ALICE COOPER, KIX, WINGER, WARRANT, FIONA, EUROPE), and featuring the singles "Lay It Down" and "You're In Love", RATT's popularity wasn't confined to the States, as they would make fans as far afield as Japan, as well as inclusion on the U.K.'s legendary Monsters Of Rock festival in 1985, on a bill featuring ZZ TOP, MARILLION, BON JOVI and METALLICA. "Invasion Of Your Privacy" would eventually make double platinum sales, and includes "What You Give Is What You Get" (single edit) as a bonus track.
Not wasting any time, and again with Beau Hill at the helm, RATT released "Dancing Undercover" in 1986. Lead single "Dance" would make a healthy dent on the charts, as well as featuring in an episode of "Miami Vice", while "Body Talk" would be included on the soundtrack to Eddie Murphy's "The Golden Child". A single edit of "Dance" has been added to the album.
Fourth album "Reach For The Sky" (1988) was the last album to be produced by Beau Hill, and was co-produced with Mike Stone (QUEEN). Featuring the single "Way Cool Jr.", "Reach ForThe Sky" racked up platinum sales, proving that RATT could still reach the U.S. top 20. The "MTV Unplugged" version of "Way Cool Jr." is included as a bonus track.
RATT's fifth record, 1990's "Detonator", was the last album released by Atlantic and the final record to feature the classic lineup. Enlisting Jon Bon Jovi for backing vocals on "Heads I Win, Tails You Lose", the abum is also notable for a number of co-writes with Desmond Child (KISS, CHER, BON JOVI), as well as production from Sir Arthur Payson. The tracks "Lovin' You's A Dirty Job" and power ballad "Givin' Yourself Away" made healthy showings on the U.S. Mainstream Rock Chart. The Ratt Fonic Monster Mix and Ratt Fonic Radio Mixes of "Lovin' You's A Dirty Job" plus "Nobody Rides For Free" from the "Point Break" soundtrack are included as bonus tracks.

YE BANISHED PRIVATEERS Present "Rowing With One Hand" Music Video
Batten down the hatches! Swedish sea pillagers, Ye Banished Privateers, will capsize your ship with their third single, “Rowing With One Hand”, from the upcoming album, Hostis Humani Generis. Along with an atmospheric audiovisual, Ye Banished Privateers present another snapshot straight from the pirate capital Nassau.
In the cinematic video, the Swedish pirates prepare the great escape from court and fight for their freebooter rights, clashing with the upscale bourgeoisie. Unmistakably folky, charming and with a bunch of drunken humour, Ye Banished Privateers draws you into their maritime universe. “Rowing With One Hand” presents the hard life of pirates on the wild ride through the ancient times.
This intense sing-along hymn and its catchy rhythm lets the listener take part in the ferocious side of the pirates and lets them flee in a cheerful frenzy from the clutches of decency. They find their way in the storm, setting course for the next adventure and keep fighting for their rebellious freedom.
The savage beast from the north, Ye Banished Privateers, returns with their enthralling fourth album, Hostis Humani Generis, out February 7 via Napalm Records. The new full-length is the most authentic of pirate manifests – with more than enough audacious atmosphere, sing-along hymns, folk tunes and foul rambling to secure the band’s unique position in the genre. These Swedish marauders of the sea take you through the ups and downs of pirate life!
Pre-order here.
Ye Banished Privateers on Hostis Humani Generis: “It is with great pride that we present to you our fourth full-length album - Hostis Humani Generis! Over the course of 13 songs (well, 15 if you get the deluxe box) we tell the immersive story of a delinquent pirate crew, the downfall of the pirate republic of Nassau, and the end of the Golden Age of Piracy. We are immensely happy that the time has finally come to share this with you all, and we really hope you like it as much as we do!”

HELLOWEEN Studio Update: Drum Recordings Finished; Video
The new, yet to be named Helloween record will see the boys going “back to the roots,” with the band recording fully analogue and Dani Löble drumming on Ingo Schwichtenberg’s original drum kit, as used in the legendary Keeper Of The Seven Keys recordings.
In the new video below, Dani Löble sends an update from the studio. As the drum recordings are finished now, the band is working on guitars, bass and vocals in various studios in Hamburg and Tenerife.
Previous videos can be seen below:
"The social media feedback was overwhelming on all counts. To hear and read 'This was the show of my lifetime' gives you the ultimate kick to offer the fans even more. Let's go for the next round!" - Sascha Gerstner
Looking back to the Pumpkins United World Tour, named by the press the Tour Of The Year, everyone still has a big smile on his / her face. The excitement that swept through the media began with the announcement of the metal summit's plan to visit at least 32 countries on 3 continents - but the reactions were nothing compared to the euphoria of over 1 million fans at sold out halls and festivals from West to East. Even if CD, DVD and Blu-ray present stunning contemporary documents - nobody wants to imagine that this is all there is...
"The Pumpkins United World Tour 2017-2019 forged us into a real band - we are all very keen in recording a new studio album now. Artistically it's extremely thrilling." - Andi Deris
Immediately following the massive Brazil tour with the Scorpions and Iron Maiden, the Pumpkins United line-up entered the H.O.M.E. Studios in Hamburg (where everything started in 1984) to work on brand new song material. The same recording console used for albums such as Master Of The Rings, Time Of The Oath or Better Than Raw is now being used to record a new legendary studio album - analogue and deliberately "back to the roots."
With Michael Kiske, Kai Hansen and Dani Löble drumming on Ingo Schwichtenberg's original kit, one thing is for sure: a stronger Helloween vibe won't be possible. With United power, the new album will slam down our door end of August / beginning of September 2020 - produced by Charlie Bauerfeind and Dennis Ward, who are likewise excited about the quality song material they have on offer from the band.
"It was already lots of fun to create a show from the variety of records for the first tour. With the new album we are able to top this. Of course, the set will contain our classics again - especially those songs we were not able to play on the first tour." - Markus Grosskopf
It's official: The United Alive World Tour Part II is coming! The ultimate Helloween party will continue and there are a million reasons to attend again. Besides the full-speed hit rollercoaster carrying the fans through three decades, the brand new album (yet to be named) will be presented live for the very first time.
In September 2020, the legendary United line-up will be unleashed again: stronger, with new song material and a ton of horsepower - simply the ultimate United Alive World Tour Part II.

Finland's OCEANHOARSE Release Official Video For "Maze Of Death"
Oceanhoarse, the Helsinki-based ambassadors of heavy metal, have released a video for the song "Maze Of Death". Despite its violent riffling and intimidating ferocity, the track actually has a positive message behind the lyrics.

"It seems like everyone is in such a hurry these days, as if life is just a game one needs to play through as efficiently as possible. But maybe, just maybe, it's worth checking out some of those dead ends in this maze too, instead of just running towards the finishing line. 'No rush to find the exit sign!'"
