THE DEAD DAISIES Will Launch 2020 Tour In April, Says GLENN HUGHES - "It's Going To Be Global Tour, A Long Tour Going Into Next Year"; Video

On January 16, former Anthrax singer, Neil Turbin, spoke to Glenn Hughes (The Dead Daisies, Black Country Communion, Deep Purple, Trapeze) at NAMM 2020 for The Metal Voice. Watch the video below.

"We all loved being in the studio," says The Dead Daisies. "We're in the process of putting together some of the highlights. Check out this short teaser."

Rock ’n’ Roll is a trip, not a destination… we all know how the saying goes! To that end, 2020 will see The Dead Daisies continue their journey with new music, performances and adventures.

The Dead Daisies have gone from strength to strength since the release of their self-titled album in 2013. They have released four studio, one live and one covers album to a growing army of fans worldwide and are praised by the global media in an era where rock has been declared dead time and time again.

The current incarnation of The Dead Daisies features guitarist Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio), drummer Deen Castronovo (Journey, Bad English), bassist and singer Glenn Hughes, and rhythm guitarist David Lowy (Red Phoenix, Mink).

Four previously released videos, also showcasing work on the upcoming, as yet untitled album can be seen below.

The Dead Daisies have released a new song, "Righteous Days", which can be heard on the band's official website, and via the video below:

Addressing the lineup change, The Dead Daisies issued the following statement: "The Dead Daisies are a musical collective, whose members come together through a common love for great rock music. It’s a living, breathing, musical organism with the credo, 'Rock is indeed alive & well!'

From the band’s inception, the idea was for members to bring their own ideas to the table but also have the flexibility to come and go when working on their other projects. Both John Corabi and Marco Mendoza are, and always will be, a part of The Dead Daisies musical family, but at this point in time they have decided to do some work on their own solo projects.

With the addition of Glenn Hughes, The Daisies supercharge their front line through his rock solid bass grooves and unmatched vocal intensity. As all fans know, the man is a true original and member of the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. One might say: 'They don't build rockers like him anymore.'

Followers can expect more high-voltage rock songs, indomitable grooves and spell-binding lyrics, all the ingredients that have made this music so timeless, out-living trends of the modern day. The sound of The Dead Daisies is firmly rooted in the hard rock way of life we all love, but they are constantly evolving and bringing new dynamics to a classic style."

SUPERSUCKERS Streaming New Song "You Ain't The Boss Of Me"

Supersuckers are streaming the new song, "Your Ain't The Boss Of Me", from their upcoming 13th studio album, Play That Rock -N- Roll, scheduled for release on February 7 via Acetate Records. Listen to the song below.

Tracked over the course of four sweltering days at Willie Nelson's Austin, TX studio, Play That Rock -N- Roll rocks with an amphetamine intensity, delivering muscular riffs, big choruses and more than a few tricks up it's sleeve.

Raw, immediate and often times hilarious, Play That Rock -N- Roll is the album a band makes after slugging it out on the road for thirty years (barring a one year hiatus while Eddie battled throat cancer). No frills, no guest stars and no collaborations, the album earns the listener's ear - the Supersuckers have lived this shit and you can feel it.

Songs like "Bringing It Back" and "Last Time Again" deliver a Ramones-like wall of sound, courtesy of guitarist Metal Marty Chandler, while "You Ain't The Boss Of Me" recalls Dirty Deeds-era AC/DC - and never one to be taken too seriously, Eddie and company make sure to keep the Supersuckers tongue firmly planted in cheek with "That's A Thing?" and "Gettin' Into Each Other's Pants".  The album also includes a rousing cover of Michael Monroe's "Dead, Jail Or Rock N' Roll" and a long overdue revival of the Allen Toussaint penned "A Certain Girl", which appears as an "unlisted track."

All in all, Play That Rock -N- Roll delivers the middle finger brand of rock n' roll the band has been known for since signing to Sub Pop in the early 1990s. Combining the ferocity of Motörhead, the off kilter humor of Cheap Trick and the swagger of Steve Earle, the 'Suckers earned their spurs playing everywhere from dirt floor dive bars to The Tonight Show. Thirty years later, they still deliver the goods, or in the words of Eddie Spaghetti himself...

"The Supersuckers have been doing this for a long time. A LONG time. And the fact that we're still doing it is not lost on us. We still love Rock n Roll. I mean, we must. There's no other explanation for why we would still be putting out fresh, new rock music anymore. No one NEEDS it. Hell, hardly anybody even WANTS it. But here it is. Another master class in quality Rock n' Roll. Sure it's for the few, the proud, the People of Impeccable Taste, the Connoisseurs Of Quality but it makes us happy to know we still got it. And we do. We might be better than we've ever been and that's exciting. So here it is, our love letter to good, ass kicking rock n roll. Turn it on, turn it up and listen to the Supersuckers play that Rock n' Roll!!"

Pre-order the album here.

Tracklisting:

"Ain't Gonna Stop"
"Gettin' Into Each Other's Pants"
"Deceptive Expectations"

"That's A Thing?"
"Last Time Again"
"Die Alone"

IRON MAIDEN's STEVE HARRIS Calls NEIL PEART's Passing 'A Sad Loss'

IRON MAIDEN bassist Steve Harris has commented on the passing of Neil Peart, who died on January 7 in Santa Monica, California after a three-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. The iconic RUSH drummer was 67 years old.

Speaking to Rob Rush Radio, Harris said (head audio below): "I never met Neil. I met the other two guys [from RUSH]. I played tennis with the other two. A good friend of mine, Andy Curran from CONEY HATCH up in Canada, we played doubles [with them].

"Yeah, it's a sad loss with Neil passing — just awful, really," Steve continued. "But [IRON MAIDEN] never played any gigs with [RUSH]."

He then repeated: "Yeah, awful."

In a 2018 interview with The Metal Voice, Harris was asked how much of an influence on his bass playing RUSH's Geddy Lee was. He responded: "Not very much, really, if I'm honest, because I was really influenced by more British players. I did love RUSH as well, [and] I still do — the '2112' album and 'A Farewell To Kings' and all that, of course. … But Geddy is a fantastic player — of course he is."

Harris went on to recount the experience of playing tennis with Lee and RUSH guitarist Alex Lifeson. He said: "It was quite funny, because me and Andy [Curran] were supposed to play tennis against them two, and Geddy said, 'No, actually…' So, basically, me and Geddy ended up playing them two first and then we switched around afterwards. Nobody was there to watch it, but I thought it would be quite funny if people had seen me and him playing tennis together."

Harris's side project BRITISH LION released its second album, "The Burning", on January 17 in digipack CD, double gatefold vinyl and digital download formats via Explorer1 Music (E1).

BRITISH LION comprises vocalist Richard Taylor, guitarists David Hawkins and Grahame Leslie, Harris on bass and keyboards and drummer Simon Dawson.

HALESTORM Has Two New EPs Coming Out, Says LZZY HALE

HALESTORM frontwoman Lzzy Hale has revealed that the band has two new EPs coming out.

Lzzy discussed HALESTORM's plans for the coming months during an interview with Bionic Buzz at last night's (Friday, January 17) She Rocks awards at the House of Blues in Anaheim, California.

Asked if HALESTORM has begun work on the follow-up to 2018's "Vicious" album, Lzzy said: "We've just been writing for it — we're demoing and all that stuff. We have a couple of projects coming out during the year that we've been recording. I have a couple of collaborations that are gonna be trickled out; you guys are gonna find out about that probably in about a week or so. And we've got ShipRocked [cruise] coming up and a small run in April. But other than that, we're hunkering down and getting some new tunes."

On the topic of whether HALESTORM will record another covers EP, Lzzy said: "We do have two EPs coming out. Whether or not they are fully covers or whether they're something even more ridiculous, I cannot say."

Last month, HALESTORM guitarist Joe Hottinger told Guitar Bonedo that the band has finished recording a new EP, although he did not want to divulge details about the disc.

Hottinger explained: "There'll be more information on that coming up. It's just getting mixed now, and it sounds awesome. It's something we've never really done before. Everyone's expecting a cover EP, but... we're about to shake it up a little. Technically, it is a cover EP. [Laughs] You'll find out. It's cool."

Lzzy added: "It's nothing like what you think. We can't really talk about it."

The two new EPs will be the band's first since the band's third covers EP, "ReAniMate 3.0: The CoVeRs eP", which came out in January 2017.

HALESTORM has announced a string of U.S. live performances in the spring. The dates kick off on April 17 at a radio festival in Tampa, Florida.

LEE AARON Pays Tribute To NEIL PEART And RUSH - "They Were A Huge Part Of The Sound Fabric Of My Teenage Years"

Canadian rock icon Lee Aaron has posted a tribute to Rush drummer Neil Peart, who passed away on January 7 after a three-year battle with brain cancer:

Lee Aaron: "So sad to hear of the passing of Neil Peart. Rush is a band like no other, a musical anomaly, breaking all the 'rock' rules and forging their own unique path to the summit of the mountain. Resonating with all the left of centre, geeky kids of the '70s and '80s, Neil’s fantastical, prophetic and insightful lyrics and the band’s cool, heavy, intricate soundscape was nothing short of transcendent. My first high school band covered 'Xanadu', and yeah, I almost fell off my bike riding to the park when 'Fly By Night' first made airwaves on my transistor radio - they were a huge part of the sound fabric of my teenage years. Lucky for all of us, music is immortal. RIP, Mr. Peart."

Rush bandmates Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson posted the following message in the wake of flood of tributes Peart.

MEGADETH Plays First Show Since DAVE MUSTAINE's Cancer Diagnosis (Video)

MEGADETH played its first show since frontman Dave Mustaine's throat cancer diagnosis earlier tonight (Monday, January 20) in Helsinki, Finland. It marked the band's first live appearance in 15 months.

Mustaine and his bandmates opened for FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH at the Hartwell Arena with an 11-song set which included such favorites as "Hangar 18", "Peace Sells" and "Symphony Of Destruction".

MEGADETH's setlist was as follows:

01. Hangar 18

02. Wake Up Dead

03. Sweating Bullets

04. Dawn Patrol

05. Trust

06. A Tout Le Monde

07. She-Wolf

08. Dystopia

09. Symphony Of Destruction

10. Peace Sells

Encore:

11. Holy Wars... The Punishment Due

Fan-filmed video footage of the show can be seen below.

MEGADETH's tour with FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH and BAD WOLVES will visit 13 more European countries before ending on February 20 at the Budapest Sportarena in Budapest, Hungary.

The 58-year-old MEGADETH leader revealed his cancer diagnosis last June on social media. Five months later, he gave an interview to Rolling Stone in which he said that he wasn't officially in remission but that he had finished the necessary treatment and had started rehabilitation. He also credited his faith for getting him through the ordeal.

"I've been praying for a long time, and when this whole thing went down, I prayed a lot," he said. "I don't force it on anybody; I never would do that. But I prayed about it, and I believe that that was the whole reason I got healed so fast. A lot of people's asses are probably going to grow together right now that I said this, but the truth of the matter is, everybody has their own things that they believe. And I believe that taking good care of myself and being physically fit, as well as spiritually fit, got me back to this point."

Although most of MEGADETH's 2019 tour dates were canceled as Mustaine battled the disease, the MEGADETH-curated Megacruise — which took place in October — still departed as scheduled, with Dave absent from the ship.

TESTAMENT's New Album Gets Official Release Date

San Francisco Bay Area metallers TESTAMENT will release the long-awaited follow-up to their 2016 album "Brotherhood Of The Snake" on April 3.

Singer Chuck Billy revealed the new record's release date during an interview with Alex Haber of Heavy New York at this past Thursday's (January 16) METAL ALLEGIANCE concert in Anaheim, California.

Asked if the new TESTAMENT disc is a musical continuation of "Brotherhood Of The Snake", Chuck said (see video below): "You're always trying to top your last record, and I thought 'Brotherhood', up to that point, was a pretty strong record. This one, it definitely stands on its own — all the songs have their own identity. Eric [Peterson, guitar] somehow came up with a way to make it be TESTAMENT but feel fresh and new still TESTAMENT, so that's pretty awesome."

He continued: "It was a quicker process than the last time, but I think at the end, the mix is awesome, the songs came out awesome, and the process wasn't as painful as it was the last time. So, it's a good record. I can't wait for everybody to hear it."

Asked if he waits for music for new TESTAMENT songs to be completed first before he starts working on lyrical ideas or if he has lyrics in mind before even hearing a note of music, Chuck said: "I have some concepts before I hear music and apply 'em to what I feel when I feel the song. So usually, a lot of it, the riff is first — it's a riff; it's not even a song yet, so it's usually just a riff. And then, from there, I just kind of feel it out and just kind of find my way through it.

"On this record, we didn't get to work and do any demos, so a lot of it was a lot of riffs going into the studio with ideas and then fine-tuning it, which I think put the pressure on ourselves," he explained. "Sometimes when you're under pressure, I think you work a little harder and you give it a little more. So I think, again, us forcing ourselves in the studio — 'Let's go. We're gonna record this record now' — it paid off, 'cause the record came out great. Everybody's performance — Steve [DiGiorgio, bass] and Gene [Hoglan, drums] just killed it on this record. It's an awesome record. TESTAMENT fans, I think, are gonna dig it."

TESTAMENT's new album was once again recorded with Juan Urteaga and mixed by veteran British producer — and current JUDAS PRIEST touring guitarist — Andy Sneap.

Last year, Billy told the WSOU radio station that the new TESTAMENT album would "definitely" contain "some different elements. I think Eric definitely stepped back into little of his — I don't know — maybe, MERCYFUL FATE shoes," he said. "There's a lot of MERCYFUL FATE kind of stuff. Eric does some black metal stuff. There's some blast beats, which he's kind of mixed in there, which that's not the norm for us. So it's a little different again. I think all the songs definitely have their own identity and stand on their own."

Chuck said that he is using his "melodic tone of a voice and less of a death metal voice" on the new TESTAMENT LP. "It's just kind of where the songs took it," he said. "There's a song on here that was kind of one of the last ones that came around — it's one of the slower-tempo songs. And I kind of was shying away from it 'cause the pace of the rest of the record was pretty quick, so I wasn't sure it was the right fit. But in the end, once we wrote it and finished it, it turned out to be a great song. But I'm doing some stuff on there — I've never sang a three-part harmony on a TESTAMENT song ever. And on this one, there's a situation where I tried it and did it, and it sounds really cool for the song. So it was just something different — challenging again that was different notes to use and different challenges, and I kind of dug it. And it actually was cool, and it actually made the experience on those songs, of creation, just kind of fun."

Billy went on to discuss two of the tracks that will appear on TESTAMENT's new disc, saying: "On this record, there's a song called 'Children Of The Next Level', and that's one that really came together, musically, and came together lyrically. There's another one on the record that, actually, the first time I heard the song, I kind of mimicked the vocal pattern and actually we wrote it the next day. So that was a song that was, like, 'Wow!' I got inspired and laid down the first gut feeling of what it felt like. And it ended up being a keeper, and we ended up molding it right into a killer song. And lyrically, the timing, the melody, the lyrics — everything just really kind of fell into place."

TESTAMENT will team up with EXODUS and DEATH ANGEL for "The Bay Strikes Back 2020" European tour. The trek will kick off on February 6 in Copenhagen, Denmark and will hit 25 cities before concluding on March 11 in Hannover, Germany.

Watch SUM 41 Perform METALLICA Medley At SiriusXM Studios

SUM 41 recently performed a METALLICA medley live at the SiriusXM studios.

Video of the five-minute medley, consisting of the songs "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Enter Sandman" and "Master Of Puppets", can be seen below.

In a 2017 interview with No Future, SUM 41 frontman Deryck Whibley professed his love for METALLICA, saying: "They just have such great melodies, even though they're tough and they're hard and heavy. They're like THE BEATLES of metal; they write really catchy songs."

Earlier this month, SUM 41 released a music video for the song "45 (A Matter of Time)" . The track joins previously released singles "Out For Blood", "Never There" and "A Death In The Family" from SUM 41's new album, "Order In Decline", which is due out July 19 via Hopeless Records.

"Order In Decline" was produced, engineered and mixed by Whibley in his home studio. He is joined on the record by lead guitarist/backing vocalist Dave Brownsound, guitarist Tom Thacker and the rhythm section of bassist/backing vocalist Cone McCaslin and drummer Frank Zummo.

SUM 41 is co-headlining the inaugural Rockstar Energy Drink Disrupt Festival this summer on select dates throughout the United States and Canada.

Watch Drum-Cam Video Of DAVE LOMBARDO Playing SLAYER's 'Angel Of Death' With METAL ALLEGIANCE

Former SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo joined Gary Holt (guitar; SLAYER, EXODUS), Phil Demmel (guitar; MACHINE HEAD, VIO-LENCE), Jack Gibson (bass; EXODUS) and Mark Osegueda (vocals; DEATH ANGEL) on stage this past Thursday night (January 16) at the METAL ALLEGIANCE concert at the House Of Blues in Anaheim, Californa to perform three SLAYER "Reign In Blood"-album classics: "Postmortem", "Raining Blood" and "Angel Of Death".

Drum-cam footage of the "Angel Of Death" performance (courtesy of OVERKILL drummer Jason Bittner) can be seen below.

An original member of SLAYER, Lombardo was effectively fired from the band after sitting out the group's Australian tour in February/March 2013 due to a contract dispute with the other members of SLAYER. He was replaced by Paul Bostaph, who was previously SLAYER's drummer from 1992 until 2001 and who had recorded four albums with the band. Lombardo currently splits his time between crossover pioneers SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, horror-punk icons MISFITS and hardcore supergroup DEAD CROSS.

Holt began filling in for SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman at live shows in 2011, and became the band's full-time co-guitarist as of 2013, while remaining a member of EXODUS. Holt played on SLAYER's final album, "Repentless", which came out in 2015. The band's other guitarist, Kerry King, told ArtistDirect how he worked with Holt during the recording of the record. "When I did leads, I probably did half of them," he said. "Gary came in and did his. Then, I probably did the other half of mine. He got to play off of mine on some songs. I got to play off of his on other songs."

Demmel filled in for Holt for four SLAYER European shows in December 2018 after Gary returned home to be with his dying father. Phil, who had only played his last show with MACHINE HEAD the day prior to being asked to join SLAYER on the road, later credited SLAYER with "saving" his musical career. "In under 24 hours, I went from the last day of a tour wondering whether I was even good enough to be bands any more to this mind-blowing text from Kerry King asking if I could play in SLAYER," he said.

Hanneman contracted necrotizing fasciitis, also known as flesh-eating disease, in January 2011 from a spider bite in his backyard. The infection ravaged the flesh and tissues of Hanneman's arm, leading to numerous surgeries, skin grafts and intense periods of rehab that forced him into semi-retirement and left him near death at several points. Hanneman eventually died in May 2013 from alcohol-related cirrhosis of the liver. He is credited for writing many of SLAYER's classic songs, including "Angel Of Death" and "South Of Heaven".

SLAYER played its last-ever concert in November at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

And lastly......and I’m saving the best for last......some of you saw me cover this song the other night, but here is the MASTER playing it!!

ROBB FLYNN Completes Writing Seven New MACHINE HEAD Songs, Records Solo Album Of Covers

Robb Flynn has finished writing seven new MACHINE HEAD songs.

The guitarist/vocalist made the revelation while recounting his "little accomplishments" for 2019 in a year-end social media post.

In the same post, Flynn confirmed that he has recorded a "solo album of covers" that will apparently be released under the ROBB FLYNN & FRIENDS banner.

This past October, MACHINE HEAD released a new song called "Do Or Die". At the time of its arrival, the track was described by some fans and media outlets as a "diss" track aimed at MACHINE HEAD's detractors, in particular those who have been critical of the band's last album, 2018's "Catharsis".

"Do Or Die" was produced by Flynn and Zack Ohren (FALLUJAH, ALL SHALL PERISH) at Sharkbite Studios in Oakland, California. It was mixed by Russ Russell (AT THE GATES, NAPLAM DEATH, SIKTH) at Parlour Studios in the United Kingdom. The mastering was handled by Gene Grimaldi at Oasis Mastering in Burbank, California.

"Do Or Die" was recorded in December 2018 by Flynn, bassist Jared MacEachern and WARBRINGER drummer Carlos Cruz.

Cruz stepped in to play on "Do Or Die" following the departure of MACHINE HEAD's longtime drummer Dave McClain.

During an August 2019 Facebook Live session, Flynn said that MACHINE HEAD "will start dropping a steady stream of new music — standalone songs. There's not gonna be an album; there's just gonna be a steady stream of standalone tracks that are consistently released," he said. "And then eventually they may or may not end up on an album. But we're mixing it up. We wanna do this new model where we can put stuff out faster and get new music out quicker to the die-hards.

"We wanna have this ability to not just have an album come out every three years, which is what we've been doing — every four years sometimes — and just make it quicker and more consistent and more like a regular thing," he explained. "I don't know what it's gonna be, but I'm definitely excited about it. I'm excited for you guys to hear this new shit."

The first leg of MACHINE HEAD's 25th-anniversary tour for the band's debut album, "Burn My Eyes", kicked off in Freiburg, Germany on October 5 and wrapped in Dublin, Ireland on November 8. The three-hour performance consisted of two parts: part one saw MACHINE HEAD's modern classics, such as "Imperium", "Halo" and "Locust", played by a lineup featuring guitarist/vocalist Robb Flynn and bassist Jared MacEachern alongside new recruits, Polish guitarist Wacław "Vogg" Kiełtyka (DECAPITATED) and British drummer Matt Alston (DEVILMENT, EASTERN FRONT); part two featured "Burn My Eyes" played in its entirety for the first time ever, with original drummer Chris Kontos and guitarist Logan Mader joining in.

The North American leg of the "Burn My Eyes" 25th-anniversary tour will kick off in Phoenix on January 16, and continue across Texas, Florida, New York, Toronto, Chicago and Denver, wrapping up at the legendary Fox Theater in Oakland, California on February 21 and House Of Blues in Anaheim, California on February 22.

THE ORDER OF CHAOS Featuring INTO ETERNITY Vocalist AMANDA KIERNAN Release New "Breakpoint" Single / Lyric Video

Canada's The Order Of Chaos - featuring Into Eternity vocalist Amanda Kiernan - have checked in with the following update:

Despite the unfortunate circumstances surrounding its release, we are incredibly excited to share this album with everyone who has supported us through the past 15 years as well as to all our maniacal heavy metal fans across the globe.

ALCATRAZZ Rejoined By Original Bassist GARY SHEA For New Album

Original Alcatrazz bassist Gary Shea has rejoined Alcatrazz. Founding members Graham Bonnet, Jimmy Waldo and Gary Shea are joined by guitarist Joe “Shredlord” Stump and drummer Mark Benquechea. Mixed by Andy Haller, the band's new album is nearly complete and will be released mid-2020.

Graham Bonnet comments: "This album is for fans of the first two Alcatrazz records, in particular the one with Yngwie! We are not messing around here; this is going to be heavy and guitar driven, plenty of that neo-classical guitar style along with heavy riffs and over the top vocals. We are ready to take Alcatrazz up to the next level with this, our first studio album since 1986!"

The album also features contributions from Chris Impellitteri, Steve Vai, Bob Kulick, Dario Mollo, and Japan shredder Nozomu Wakai in what is a Bonnet shredefest of some of the guitarists from his past.

The band will be touring extensively in 2020/2021 and beyond!

Greece’s PUTA VOLCANO Announce New Album, Single Streaming

Greek hard rock, stoner, sludge quartet Puta Volcano has announced their eagerly-awaited third LP, Amma, due March 13 via The Orchard.

Preorder on limited gold/black vinyl, CD, and limited t-shirt bundles at Bandcamp.

Puta Volcano is building up their legacy and fanbase, one gig, one album, one song at the time. An already-acknowledged cog in the Greek heavy rock scene, the band formed in 2012, releasing their debut EP Represent Victory Below Eye. Puta Volcano’s debut full-length, The Sun (2015), was recognized as a fresh and inspiring offering, and soon after the band started gigging regularly, including 2015’s Rockwave Festival in Athens, alongside The Black Keys and 1000mods.

In 2017 Puta Volcano released their celebrated Harmony Of Spheres LP, a heady mixture of Seattle grunge, stoner and Southern rock, all with a South-Eastern European twist. The year that the quartet truly kicked on, Harmony of Spheres was toured across the EU, at Desertfest Athens, and led to Puta Volcano supporting Alice In Chains and Fu Manchu at Release Athens Fest last year.

The forthcoming Amma LP is a highly enterprising and unusual release, full of heft and verve. Elements of Alice In Chains, Melvins, Hole, even A Perfect Circle, Kylesa and Baroness combine to create a tantalizing listen, showcasing a young band really hitting their stride.

Tracklisting:

“Re-Entry”
“Entropica”
“Venus Lullaby”
“First Light”
“Black Box”
“Sugar Cube”
“Echoing Icons”
“Primitive Data”
“Apnea”
“Torus”
“Space Blanket”
“Kassandra’s Gift”

GODSMACK's SULLY ERNA Says NEIL PEART 'Was In A Wheelchair And He Couldn't Speak' In Months Leading Up To His Death

In an interview with Mistress Carrie of the Boston radio station WAAF, Sully Erna of GODSMACK opened up about the recent passing of Neil Peart and the profound impact the legendary RUSH drummer had on his musical upbringing.

Sully said (hear audio below): "Growing up, I will say that [Neil] was probably the single most influential musician in my life. If it wasn't him and and John Bonham [LED ZEPPELIN] — and Shannon Larkin [GODSMACK], by the way — that's my 'big three' [of drum influences]… Honestly, [Peart's] technique, his hands, his amazing rhythms is really what kind of tuned me up to become the drummer I became. Between Bonham and Neil Peart, those were the guys."

Over the years, Erna got the "surreal" opportunity to meet Neil multiple times and become "friends" with him. "The song 'Serenity' [from GODSMACK's 2003 album 'Faceless'], most people might not even know, was about [Neil's] book 'Ghost Rider: [Travels On The Healing Road]' that came out in 2002 about his life," Sully said. "And that's when I first got to meet him. And since then, I became really good friends with his assistant and we've always kept in touch. I think we may have one of the last on-camera interviews with Neil, recently, when he agreed to do an interview for the director of this feature documentary we're doing on my life story. He sat down in his whole drumming warehouse place and talked about me and Shannon's playing and our drum solo and how impressed he was with the whole thing. And then soon after that, I heard he had gotten sick."

According to Erna, he knew about Peart's battle with brain cancer "for a while," but was "asked, out of respect for Neil and the privacy he liked to live in, to just not say anything. But I knew, when they were ending the RUSH tour, that he was sick," Sully claimed. "And then I knew it, even up to a year ago or so, he was in a wheelchair and he couldn't speak. And it was just becoming more and more sad to me. And then I got the call a few days ago [letting me know about his death]. And they weren't supposed to release [an official statement about it] till [Friday], they told me, so I just chose to honor that request and keep my mouth shut.

"When I got the call, man, it was like a big part of my life ended there too, because he was a tremendous influence [to me]," Erna added. "I can't even articulate how much this guy meant to me and how big of an inspiration he was and an influence on me being a musician. He was one of the 'everything' people in my life."

Erna told The Pulse Of Radio a while back that meeting the RUSH drummer was a highlight of his 20 years as a recording artist. "Being able to meet Neil Peart a couple of times, I didn't need to meet anyone else after that," he said. "As much as I love the Steven Tylers and the Joe Perrys and the James Hetfields, you know, I quit school because of RUSH. Really, that's all I did is I studied RUSH, you know. I sat home and strapped on headphones and played 'Moving Pictures' and 'Exit… Stage Left' and 'Signals' and all these great albums."

In 2018, Erna told Classic Rock magazine that RUSH's "Moving Pictures" was one of several albums that changed his life.

GODSMACK is continuing to tour in support of its latest album, "When Legends Rise", which was released in April 2018. The disc follows up 2014's "1000hp" and is the band's first release through BMG after splitting with its longtime home, Republic/Universal.

STYGIAN CROWN Feat. Ex-MORGION Member Joins Cruz Del Sur Music

Cruz Del Sur Music has announced the signing of Los Angeles doom metallers Stygian Crown. The label will release the band’s self-titled debut in May 2020.

Stygian Crown was formed in 2018 by former Morgion and current Gravehill drummer Rhett Davis, who tapped his Gravehill bandmates Nelson Miranda (guitar) and Jason Thomas (bass) to help launch the band. Morbid Eclipse guitarist Andy Hicks was the next to join, and with the help of longtime friend Bob Kassing, vocalist Melissa Pinion was discovered after Kassing (who has since sadly passed away) introduced her to Davis. Shortly thereafter, Davis’s wife discovered a YouTube video of her singing a cover of Iron Maiden’s “Hallowed Be Thy Name”, making her the perfect fit for Stygian Crown.

“Jason, Nelson and I have been doing Gravehill for quite a while,” notes Davis. “The three of us had always wanted to do a band in this vein so we started writing music in between commitments for Gravehill. The three of us are fans of Andy’s band, Morbid Eclipse, and invited him to sit in with us. His chemistry with Nelson — that Adrian Smith/Dave Murray type of chemistry — you can’t fabricate that. Personally, I admire guitarists who can mesh like that. Melissa also has quite a bit of music to contribute — more than we can keep up with.”

To date, Stygian Crown has only the 2018 Through Divine Rite demo to their credit. The demo was initially tracked before Pinion joined the band, but once she laid down her vocals and the mixing and mastering process was complete, the three-song offering quickly started making the rounds in the doom community. It wasn’t too long before Stygian Crown fell into the lap of a familiar face.

“We were initially contacted by Skol Records, but while discussing with [label owner] Bart Gabriel, he handed us over to Tom Phillips of While Heaven Wept to instead work with Cruz Del Sur. It was surreal to find ourselves working with Cruz Del Sur, as an old friend of mine Aesop Dekker (ex-Agalloch) recommended the label to me months previously. Just them, nobody else.”

Stygian Crown is currently hard at work on their debut self-titled album. Drums will be tracked at Trench Studios (Exhumed, Hirax) with John Haddad. Guitars, bass and vocals will be tracked at Miranda’s home studio, and mixing and mastering will be handled by Mark Kelson of The Eternal’s Kelsonic Studios in Australia.

As for what fans can expect, try this combination on for size:

“It’s a concoction we call ‘Candlethrower,’” enthuses Davis. “We wanted to expand on the approach of bands like Candlemass and Bolt Thrower — our new material combines both. Add Melissa’s vocals, some synth and it’s epic all the way!”
