DEMONS & WIZARDS Release AC/DC-Inspired New Single 'Midas Disease'

DEMONS & WIZARDS, the side project of ICED EARTH mainman Jon Schaffer and BLIND GUARDIAN singer Hansi Kürsch, will release its third studio album, "III", on February 21 via Century Media Records. The LP marks the band's first collection of new material in 15 years.

The disc's second single, "Midas Disease", can now be streamed below.

Kürsch says: "Meanwhile, you all should have heard the epic 'Diabolic', and as second impression of 'III', we offer you the complete opposite now: the four and a half minutes of 'Midas Disease'! The song reminds me of one of these good old hard rock bands, playing on and on for more than 40 years, I guess you'll know whom I refer to once you hear it. 'Midas Disease' has a cunning vibe, which I absolutely love. It is pure honesty."

Schaffer adds: "I had a working title of 'Unbroken' for this song, and when I sent it to Hansi, he instantly liked it. We both feel it added a totally different dimension to an already very diverse album. It's straight-up fists-in-the-air hard rock/heavy metal song, which was certainly inspired by the riffing and rhythmic abilities of Malcolm Young and I personally dedicate it to his memory. You are missed, Sir Malcolm!"

"III" track listing:

01. Diabolic

02. Invincible

03. Wolves In Winter

04. Final Warning

05. Timeless Spirit

06. Dark Side Of Her Majesty

07. Midas Disease

08. New Dawn

09. Universal Truth

10. Split

11. Children Of Cain

The "III" recording lineup is:

Hansi Kürsch – Lead and backing vocals

Jon Schaffer - Rhythm and lead guitars, bass guitar, 6- and 12-string acoustic guitars, mandolin, keyboards, backing vocals

Guest musicians on "III":

Brent Smedley - Drums

Jim Morris - Additional guitars, backing vocals

Jake Dreyer - Additional guitars

Ruben Drake - Bass

Thomas Hackman, Olaf Senkbeil, John Jaycee Cuipers, Zakery Alexander, Jeff Brant, Todd Plant, Jerome Mazza - Backing vocals

PA'dam chamber choir - Classical choir

Kürsch told Heavy New York about "III": "It will stand out completely. It's 14 years [since the last album] and you can feel that. And we're not even intending to go back and do something which will build on what we did in the past. Still, the roots are there. It's the definition of Jon and me. This cannot be denied, not one single second on this album. But it has a very intense, modern, new feeling to it. It goes away from what we've done in the past."

Added Jon: "Like he said, it's very honest. It's us. There's no question about who it is, but we've grown as individuals and as artists. I think you can hear that. There's a lot of big, huge dynamic range on this album, and it's going to take people on a journey, man. For sure."

During a press conference at last year's Hellfest, Jon stated about the songwriting process for "III": "At the end of [ICED EARTH's] 'Incorruptible' album cycle, I went out to the mountains in Arizona and hiked for a month and spent one week with my [ICED EARTH] bandmates, because we were going on hiatus. So the five of us went out into the desert and stayed together, and then I stayed three weeks by myself and got an enormous amount of power from that and energy from just staying away from the music business and not talking to management. I talked to Hansi about twice, and other than that, I was completely disconnected from everybody, and it was a really great thing. So when I got back to songwriting, it was, like, 'Boom!' Everything went really fast, and I knew there was really, really strong material, and it's good. And the arrangements came, and everything came, and I started sending Hansi stuff. I knew, from an instrumental standpoint, that this is some of the best material I've ever written. And then when he added his stuff on top, it was, like, 'Okay, we have something really special for the people.' And at the end of the day, I actually don't care if you guys love it, because I do, and [Hansi] does. And that sounds harsh, but that's art, and it's honest — it's actually honest. And it's real, and it is actually some of the best material I've written in my entire life, from my standpoint, and what [Hansi has] done, it's killer. And people are gonna be shocked, I think — very pleasantly shocked — by what's coming, honestly."

DEMONS & WIZARDS recently released remastered versions of its first two albums on all digital platforms. Remastered by Chris "Zeuss" Harris (ICED EARTH, QUEENSRŸCHE, SANCTUARY), "Demons & Wizards" (2000) and "Touched By The Crimson King" (2005) were also released as expanded deluxe editions in June. The expanded editions feature liner notes by Kürsch and Schaffer as well as bonus material and were released as a limited-edition digipak, deluxe 2LP with etching and LP booklet as well as digital deluxe editions.

FLEETWOOD MAC Guitarist/Co-Founder PETER GREEN To Launch New Project Feat. METALLICA's KIRK HAMMETT

Rufus Publications has issued the following statement to Planet Rock:

"Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green, now 73, is a reclusive music legend, now living in retirement in the south of England. He spends most of his days playing guitar or drawing at home, creating a body of artwork over the last few years.

"Recently, he has been working with Rufus Publications on a special book and music project, scheduled for release later this year. As a result of the project, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett, who owns Peter’s classic 1959 Gibson Les Paul, has been contributing, first by going into Abbey Road and recording something very special with said guitar - known as “Greeny” - and then by visiting Peter at his home and reuniting him with the guitar for the first time since Peter sold it to Gary Moore, 47 years ago. It was an astonishing meeting of two great, but very different, musicians who spent much of the afternoon discussing the guitar and the music that inspires them. Kirk played Peter the guitar track recorded at Abbey Road and the day ended with Kirk telling Peter he would be sending him a full set of Metallica recordings to listen to.

"The project Peter is working on with Rufus Publications and is nearing completion and will be released later this year and will include several guest musicians playing on some unique recordings."

Hammett shared two photos on social media of himself with Peter Green. The first of the photos, taken by Ross Halfin, depicts the two guitar icons sitting on a sofa, with Peter Green clutching a signed vinyl copy of Metallica’s 1986 album, Master Of Puppets. The second  photo is of them smiling while clutching Peter’s fabled 1959 Gibson Les Paul guitar, known as Greeny, which Peter sold to the late-great Gary Moore and Kirk now owns.

DIRTY SHIRLEY Feat. GEORGE LYNCH And TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA Singer DINO JELUSICK: Listen To 'I Disappear' Song

"I Disappear", a new song from DIRTY SHIRLEY, the project featuring guitarist George Lynch (THE END MACHINE, KXM, LYNCH MOB, ex-DOKKEN) and vocalist/keyboardist Dino Jelusick (ANIMAL DRIVE, TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA), can be streamed below. The track is taken from DIRTY SHIRLEY's self-titled debut album, which will be released on January 24 via Frontiers Music Srl.

Croatian singer Dino Jelusick, over the course of just one album and one covers EP released with his band ANIMAL DRIVE, has started to make quite the name for himself in the hard rock and metal scene. More than a few musicians of note have called up Dino to see if he might be interested in collaborating, which he is floored by. This talented young singer has an appreciation and deep respect for the musical heroes who preceded and profoundly influenced him. So, when George Lynch opened the doors to the idea of writing and producing a record together, Dino was more than intrigued. Frontiers, known for releasing interesting collaborations of this nature, was more than happy to be the label home for this project.

The resulting album and band, DIRTY SHIRLEY — named after one of the first songs they wrote together — covers a wide spectrum of styles. Classic metal to more "traditional" LYNCH MOB-oriented sounds and even some hints of the first BADLANDS album are in the mix. Showcasing a stunning performance from George Lynch — a seemingly bottomless pit of inspired and creative guitar playing — and an absolutely over the top lead vocal performance from Dino, DIRTY SHIRLEY is going to be an easy "must listen" for the hard rock and metal crowd. EVANESCENCE drummer Will Hunt rounds out the lineup.

Dino says: "This record was done differently from everything else I did so far. George jammed and sent me rough versions and I tried a thousand melodies and lyrics on it. It turned out fantastic and very versatile. From R&B and rock ballads to some very heavy tunes, bluesy stuff, hard rock, rock 'n' roll, grungy vibes... everything. Will was the perfect drummer for this, loud and groovy. I recorded vocals while being on tour with TSO in the bus, every evening when we had a day off. And finished it in Croatia. You gotta listen to the whole album to get the impression of it, not only singles. But the first single will surely kick your ass, so better be prepared!"

George adds: "At its core, this record is built on classic guitar riffage and grooves, but is also infused with eclectic tendencies scattered about that are unexpected and challenging. 80% of the guitar work on this record is rhythms, so I wanted to create a three-dimensional sonic tapestry that complimented the more basic riffs and chords. I tried to add a little twist to everything." He continues: "It was funny because when the label approached me about pairing up with Dino, for some reason I got the impression he was an Italian pop singer. LOL. So I wrote some songs in that vein, haha. ; ) Then when I heard what he was actually all about, I had to duck back into the laboratory and reinvent the wheel. If Ronnie James Dio and young Coverdale had a baby boy, his name would be Dino."

The band is currently exploring live show opportunities for 2020, so stay tuned for more news on DIRTY SHIRLEY.

DIRTY SHIRLEY recording lineup:

George Lynch: Guitars

Dino Jelusick: Vocals, Keyboards

Will Hunt: Drums

Trevor Roxx: Bass

GARGOYL Feat. REVOCATION Mastermind DAVE DAVIDSON Sign To Season Of Mist; Debut Album Due This Year

Season Of Mist has announced the signing of progressive grunge rockers, Gargoyl, which features guitarist Dave Davidson (Revocation) and guitarist/vocalist Luke Roberts (Ayahuasca). The band will be releasing their debut full-length via Season Of Mist later this year.

Dave Davidson comments: "Season Of Mist have always been an unconventional label with a unique vision so we're very proud to officially join their ranks. We look forward to our new partnership with SoM and can’t wait for you all to hear our debut album."

For a glimpse of what's to come, check out Gargoyl's previously released demos via Soundcloud, here.

Davidson will attending this year's NAMM conference in Anaheim, CA from January 16-19. He will be doing in-person signings at the Jackson booth on Saturday, January 18, at 12 PM, PST.

A blend of jazzy prog and frenzied grunge, Gargoyl doesn’t settle on any one genre marker. They prefer to forge their own niche in the musical ether with quiet subconscious exploration exploding into driving backbeats and soaring vocal harmonies. Featuring spastic metal outfit Ayahuasca’s Luke Roberts on guitar and vocals alongside the virtuosic talents of Revocation mastermind Dave Davidson, this fresh collaboration sees the artists expand their current repertoire to create something that incorporates metal but grows outside its confines.

Lineup:

Luke Roberts - Guitar, Vocals
David Davidson - Guitar
Brett Leier - Bass
James Knoerl - Drums

FLYLEAF Members Join Forces With P.O.D. Drummer In BELLE AND THE DRAGON

Longtime FLYLEAF members Sameer Bhattacharya (guitar) and Pat Seals (bass) have joined forces with P.O.D. drummer Noah "Wuv" Bernardo and producer Dave Hidek in a new project called BELLE AND THE DRAGON.

Described by Sameer as "an existential crisis put to music," BELLE AND THE DRAGON's debut album, "Birthrights", examines the beliefs and traditions that every child inherits upon birth, encompassing layers of faith, loss and realization.

This passion project has been a labor of love for Sameer since 2016 when the Texas native, on touring hiatus from his band FLYLEAF, relocated from Los Angeles to San Diego. Transitioning into the next chapter of his life, he was inspired to dig deep into himself exploring his childhood and formative years, evaluating where he had come from, what he had been taught, what he had lost and ultimately empowering him to be more open minded about the journey ahead of him.

As one of the primary songwriters for the alternative rock band FLYLEAF, Sameer composed the lyrics and riffs for "Birthrights" and recruited his bandmate and good friend Seals and fellow touring musician Wuv to collaborate, with Hidek as the producer.

BELLE AND THE DRAGON is Sameer's first solo project, which affords him the opportunity to write without a filter. Prior to BELLE AND THE DRAGON, the guitarist was one of the the primary songwriters, and background vocalists for FLYLEAF since 2002. Sameer also toured with P.O.D. from 2016 to 2018, playing keys and singing background vocals.

Recorded at the Professor Bombay Sound studio in North County San Diego, the album was produced and mixed by Hidek of The Church Recording Studio in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Prior to BELLE AND THE DRAGON, Dave had co-written and headed up pre-production on FLYLEAF's albums "New Horizons" and "Between The Stars". Hidek has also worked with P.O.D. on remixes for a San Diego Chargers theme song reboot.

BELLE AND THE DRAGON's music video for the song "Wrestle (With The Devil)" can be seen below. The clip was flilmed in December on the North Ponto Beach in Carlsbad, California.

BELLE AND THE DRAGON will make its live debut on next month's ShipRocked cruise.

BELLE AND THE DRAGON is:

Sameer Bhattacharya - vocals / guitar / songwriting

Pat Seals - bass guitar

Noah "Wuv" Bernardo – drums

Dave Hidek - production / programming

MACHINE HEAD's New Drummer MATT ALSTON: Drum-Cam Footage Of 'From This Day' Performance From Paris

Drum-cam footage of MACHINE HEAD drummer Matt Alston performing the song "From This Day" with his bandmates on October 29 at Le Trianon in Paris, France can be seen below.

MACHINE HEAD frontman Robb Flynn recently spoke to France's HEAVY1 about the addition of Polish guitarist Wacław "Vogg" Kiełtyka (DECAPITATED) and British drummer Alston (DEVILMENT, EASTERN FRONT) to the group's ranks. Kiełtyka and Alston joined MACHINE HEAD on the first leg of its 25th-anniversary tour for the band's classic debut, "Burn My Eyes", which kicked off in Germany on October 5 in Freiburg, and wrapped in Dublin, Ireland on November 8.

"We were doing auditions for a while, and Vogg's audition just fucking blew my mind — it was so fucking tight and fucking accurate," Flynn stated about how the guitarist ended up landing the gig. "He sent over [a recording of] 'Imperium' as his first song just as a test. We always had all the dudes do a sound test, just to make sure the levels are good and stuff. I was, like, 'Oh my God! This dude is playing 'Imperium' better than I can right now.' [Laughs] It was crazy. And we ended up talking. Super-nice guy. Matt, same thing. We flew him out, jammed with him, and he killed it."

Each show on MACHINE HEAD's latest tour was described in a press release as "a three-hour musical extravaganza," comprised of two parts: part one features a battery of MACHINE HEAD's modern classics, such as "Imperium", "Halo" and "Now We Die", featuring Flynn and bassist Jared MacEachern performing alongside Kiełtyka and Alston. Part two features "Burn My Eyes" played in its entirety for the first time ever, with original drummer Chris Kontos and guitarist Logan Mader joining in.

Asked how all the musicians are getting along and whether they are traveling together, Flynn told HEAVY1: "We're all in the band together — we all live together. The band's all on the bus — all six of us. And it's a great ride, man. Everybody is very respectful; everybody knows their role and just kind of doing it here and enjoying it. Everybody is out here having a blast. It's so nice to have people who are in a positive frame of mind, 'cause it wasn't like that in the past. And now it is, and it's fucking awesome."

Kontos left MACHINE HEAD before the release of the band's second album, 1997's "The More Things Change", and was replaced by Dave McClain.

Mader contributed to two MACHINE HEAD albums, the aforementioned "Burn My Eyes" and "The More Things Change", before exiting the group and being replaced by Ahrue Luster and, later on, Phil Demmel.

McClain and Demmel both left MACHINE HEAD in October 2018.

The North American leg of the "Burn My Eyes" 25th-anniversary tour will kick off in Phoenix on January 16, and continue across Texas, Florida, New York, Toronto, Chicago and Denver, wrapping up at the legendary Fox Theater in Oakland, California on February 21 and House Of Blues in Anaheim, California on February 22.

MARKO HIETALA - Lyric Video For NIGHTWISH Bassist / Vocalist's New Single "Voice Of My Father" Streaming

Finnish singer/ bassist Marko Hietala (aka Marco Hietala) will release his upcoming solo album, Pyre Of The Black Heart, on January 24 via Nuclear Blast. Today, he reveals the lyric video for the second single, "Voice Of My Father", which you can see below.

Pre-order Pyre Of The Black Heartnow on CD (jewelcase) or clear vinyl, here.

About the goal behind his solo album, Marko Hietala comments, "Well, let's put it this way: Nightwish is without any doubt my main band, and thanks to income from that direction, I don't have to be that commercially aware... What I mean is that when I was coming up with the musical thoughts for this solo record, I was able to do simply anything without limits. So if I had a goal, it was to not have any kind of limits, but to prepare an unpredictable, spontaneous, adventurous, ferocious and intimate solo record. And now when I am listening to the final album by myself, I can say with my hand on my heart that I - or rather us - pulled it off... The record is a really diverse musical roller coaster ride that takes eager listeners into a world of strong emotions and deep feelings!"

Hietala's voice has barely faded away, and he is already honouring his skillful band mates. "Even if Pyre Of The Black Heartis definitely my solo album, I didn't compose everything on my own. When the song writing process was really in full swing, I kept sending all the ideas to my long-time collaborators Tuomas Wäinölä [guitar] and Vili Ollila [keyboards], and this ingenious two-some came up with great additions and arrangements, one after another. Drummer Anssi Nykänen - who is simply a wizard behind his set - completed the line-up like no other."

Tracklisting:

"Stones"
"The Voice Of My Father"
"Star, Sand And Shadow"
"Dead God's Son"
"For You"
"I Am The Way"
"Runner Of The Railways"
"Death March For Freedom"
"I Dream"
"Truth Shall Set You Free"

"The Voice Of My Father" lyric video:

"Stones" video:

Shortly after the album release there will also be a Marko Hietala solo tour. "Come February... We simply can't wait to get out on the road! It will be amazing to perform these solo songs for all those multinational friends of my music", Hietala says and continues: "I strongly recommend coming out to see my band during this run, entitled Tour Of The Black Heart, as this will be my first and last European solo tour in a long time - or ever!"

Tour dates, with support from Oceanhorse, are as follows:

MEGADETH Bassist DAVID ELLEFSON Talks Cars - "I Get Why They Call The BMW The 'Ultimate Driving Machine'"

Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson believes in leasing. It goes back to his dad's then-new Chevy Silverado that he learned to drive on.

"My dad always bought brand-new cars, which is why I like to lease new and drive new cars myself," Ellefson tells MotorTrend. "When you're driving an import car, when you lease it, after three years when things are about to break, you can expense it. You turn it in and go get another one."

His current lease is a 2019 BMW X3 with the M Sport package, which he rates a 7. "I'm in it right now. The engine's a little small for my liking. I just drive around town. Once in a while I'll drive from Phoenix over to Los Angeles, but I like to fly for anything over six hours," he says with a laugh. "I'd rather fly and rent a car. I'm the king of the rental car now. But I like to have a good reliable car at home."

Driving around all day in a torrential rainstorm was no problem for the BMW. "I was in my car most of the day driving, and this car motored through those storms, 2 feet of water, and major drainage backup, and I drove through those with the greatest of ease," he says. "That was an awesome driving experience. I get why they call the BMW the 'ultimate driving machine.' It hugs the road. I like the smoothness of the Mercedes, but the Beemer's a bit more of a kick-ass rock-and-roll car."

He also loves that the controls are more intuitive than in a Mercedes. "I love the whole Apple CarPlay, because I'm an Apple guy, so when you get in, the phone interfaces perfect into the system," he says. "Usually when I'm driving, I listen to comedy channels on Sirius because too much of my life is serious, so it's good to laugh when I'm in my car."

Ellefson has a few cars in his garage that are all paid for, that family members drive, including a Toyota Highlander, a Honda Pilot that he handed down to his son, and a Scion that his daughter drives. "It's perfect for her lifestyle as a college student. I say buy Japanese, rent German," he says with a laugh.

For the last 15 years, he has always owned SUVs. "Even though I have roadies and techs to move my gear, I'm a bass player. Just before this phone call, I was leaving Fender in Scottsdale and I have three basses in the back," Ellefson says. "If you're in a regular sedan, you can't fit three basses. I contemplated getting a BMW sedan and I quickly moved off of it because I thought, first and foremost, I'm a bass player and bass players have long instruments and occasionally your amp in the car. For me, hauling and moving gear around is part of a musician's lifestyle."

WE SELL THE DEAD Featuring IN FLAMES, FIREWIND, ENGEL Members Debut "Carved In Stone" Music Video

We Sell The Dead, the band around Niclas Engelin (In Flames, Engel) and Drömriket’s Jonas Slättung, return with a new album, Black Sleep, out on February 21 via earMUSIC. A video for the song, "Carved In Stone", can be found below.

You may ask: what does the band name - We Sell The Dead - mean? Do they actually sell the dead? No, not literally. What they sell is more of an idea, a concept of death and the dead as being an integral part of the life of the living.  All of that is packed into a riveting mix of dark and raw heavy metal that carries the catchiness of true hit material. Their sophomore album, Black Sleep, will be released on February 21 via earMUSIC.

We Sell The Dead explain: “The term Black Sleep is, of course, a metaphor for death. ‘Eternal sleep’ is a somewhat more frequently used one, but we wanted an expression that sounded sinister and soft, both at the same time. Because it is a quite beautiful thing, this short life of ours. Blink and it’s over. And, most importantly, death is not the enemy. Indifference and life without meaning is. We are all going to die, eventually, all of us, sometime sooner or later. Life isn’t about sitting and waiting for that to happen, life is about taking what you’ve got and squeeze the most out of it.”

The band started in 2016 as an idea by Niclas Engelin (In Flames,Engel) and Jonas Slättung (Drömriket). They were quickly joined by their old friend Apollo Papathanasio - the frontman for Firewind and Spiritual Beggars - on vocals. Gas Lipstick, drummer for the first album and former member of HIM was replaced by Engel drummer Oscar Nilsson, due to logistical circumstances. In addition, Petter Olsson joins the band as a full-time member on keys and thereby perfectly rounds up the quintet.

WOLF Premier "Midnight Hour" Music Video

Swedish heavy metal masters, Wolf, strike back with their brand-new single, “Midnight Hour”. It is a first foretaste of their eighth studio album, Feeding The Machine, that offers intense and addictive headbanger anthems.

The band states: “This is the first video from Feeding The Machine, directed by Daniel Wahlström of Heavy Groove Media. Apparently we have a tradition in Wolf to have Niklas half naked and tormented in the videos and this fine tradition we still uphold. You got to suffer for the art, right? Seriously, it has been a blast working with Daniel, who is full of crazy ideas and there will be a second video from him later on. Oil your neck joints, let your inner animal out and howl at the moon. We give you: 'Midnight Hour'!"

Feeding The Machine will be released on March 13. As a special extra track included on the Limited Edition CD Digipak and also on the CD coming along with the LP, Wolf have recorded a stunning cover version of the Angel Witch classic, "Atlantis".

GHOST's TOBIAS FORGE On Bringing His Music Video Ideas To Life: 'Most Of The Things That I Come Up With Are Not Done Yet'

In a recent interview with Alternative Press's APTV, GHOST mastermind Tobias Forge discussed his frustrations trying to bring his decadant visions to life while still having to stay on budget and reveals the two music video ideas from GHOST's back catalog that have yet to be produced.

Speaking about the difficulties he encounters in getting GHOST videos made, Forge said (see video below): "I am the dynamo in an operation, but I'm surrounded by a lot of people. So every time I wanna do something, I have to initially sell that idea to an X amount of people, in order for it to have the backing and the funding. It's one thing if you're a clay artist and the only thing you need is this lump of clay, and with that you can create anything. But, obviously, I need people around me to orchestrate whatever idea I have — be it cinematic or audio or visually. Every idea needs to go through a certain little 'do I really wanna do this?' phase. And, believe me, most of the things that I come up with are not done yet — I haven't done 'em — because so many of them are ending up in the, 'Eh, we can't do that right now. We don't have time to do that right now.' 'Okay.' So we have a lot of things that just — some get used and some [don't]. But essentially, you can do anything. You just have to feel like it so much that it's worth going through that whole process of selling it to everyone and then orchestrate it and then finalize it and then stand for it. So sometimes you come up with ideas that sounds great when it's three o'clock in the morning, and then, two days after, it's just, like, [chuckles] 'Pfft.'"

Last month, Forge revealed to Finland's Kaaos TV that he will record one new song in January before getting to work on GHOST's fifth album.

Forge did not reveal where the standalone song will surface, but he added that he''ll continue writing through May, with plans to enter the studio on June 1. He remarked: "Hopefully then we're gonna start recording the drums for all these 15 songs — something like that — I'm gonna write. Some of them are written, some of them are in bits and pieces, and some of them I don't know yet."

The musician, who plays most instruments on GHOST's albums except drums, added that he wants to create songs meant to be played in large venues, saying: "Making a new fifth album means that I'm gonna continue writing songs that will sound great on [an arena stage]."

The new GHOST album will be out in early 2021 and will follow up 2018's "Prequelle", which contained the rock radio hits "Rats" and "Dance Macabre".

DARK FORTRESS Streaming New Song "Isa"

Venerated black metal specialists, Dark Fortress, return with a new album, Spectres From The Old World, on February 28 via Century Media Records. Check out “Isa”, the second song taken from the album, below.

Guitarist V. Santura about the track: “We are proud to present ‘Isa’, a monolithic song inspired by Arctic Icescapes. The first single we released on December 20th, ‘Pulling At Threads’, is definitely one of the fastest and shortest songs taken from ‘Spectres from the Old World’. With ‘Isa’ we are putting out a different, opposite aspect: ‘Isa’ is the longest track on the album and probably also one of the heaviest and most epic songs in our discography thus far.”

Morean (vocals) elaborates: “Ice is traditionally associated with death and stasis, and little else. Geologically speaking, this is far from the truth. Sure, nothing but a few hardy snow algae and the odd freak insect can live on ice directly. But if it wasn’t for glaciation, we would have neither the awesome jagged spires of our beloved mountains, nor the fertile ground supporting life at their feet. When ice melts, it creates the rivers that sustain us; when it freezes, it serves as a shield for the planet against overheating. If it wasn’t for the conveyor belt of the Antarctic ice cap scraping nutrients from the virginal soil underneath it into the oceans, tropical waters wouldn’t be able to sustain their enormous biomass. And, en passant so to speak, the grinding, ever-shifting blankets of ice create the most beautiful artworks ever seen - be it the natural cathedrals of hexagonal basalt created by subglacial volcanic eruptions, the mind-boggling sculptural richness of calved icebergs, or the multi-colored interplay of light in transient ice caves; all that without any involvement of humans whatsoever. To an artist, this is at the same time a humbling and elating realization.”

After a six-year gap, Germany’s darkest sons continue where Venereal Dawn (2014) left off conceptually. Morean (vocals) explains: “Together with the rest of the human race, the protagonist reincarnated as a disembodied creature of pure light in ‘On Fever’s Wings’, the last song of Venereal Dawn. The new album attempts to draw a picture of such a mind’s perspective on life - reincarnating as pure, massless energy. The narrator has become the fabric of the universe itself. This is where heavy physics and string theory come in.”

Spectres From The Old World is more direct, more aggressive than its predecessors. At no time in Dark Fortress’ history have they reached so far out into the darkness, only to find the domine of astronomy non-existent, the end merely an end. Recorded, engineered, mixed, and mastered by V. Santura at Woodshed Studios throughout 2019, Spectres From The Old World marks an important milestone in Dark Fortress’ journey along actual and spiritual left-hand paths.

Spectres From The Old World can be pre-ordered in various formats, here.

MY RUIN Vocalist TAIRRIE B. MURPHY Offering Free Download Of TURA SATANA's 1997 Debut Album

This week, My Ruin vocalist Tairrie B. Murphy made Tura Satana's Relief Through Release album from 1997 available digitally to the fans for a price of their choosing, or for free. She has posted the following message:

"Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to violence. This time it comes in female form. You can click on the link below and download a FREE digital copy of Tura Satana's debut album, Relief Through Release, from 1997 to add to your music collection. This album is officially *out of print* and hard to find so for those of you who want to update your old school CD or cassette tape versions to include digital or have never heard it, here's your chance!

To accompany the link, I went into my rock vault and dug out the first review of the album from Kerrang! It features a photo by my favorite U.K. rock photographer extraordinaire Paul Harries. Coincidentally, Paul also shot the slip case cover of RTR + the cover of All Is Not Well when Manhole was forced to change our name and re-issue the album under our new moniker in 1998. Although this is the same tracklisting, I have also included it on this Bandcamp page as it's a part of our discography.

It's been fun revisiting these albums after so many years. I hope you feel the same way I do. Please share with anyone you know who might enjoy these recordings too!

No matter what incarnation my various projects take (from hip hop to heavy metal) when it comes to my art, I will always stay true to myself and follow my own heart. Thank you for continuing to be with me on my musical journey from past to present day. May we never grow apart."

LAMB OF GOD Guitarist MARK MORTON Releases Music Video For 'All I Had To Lose' From 'Ether' Solo EP

LAMB OF GOD guitarist Mark Morton has revealed the first video from his new solo EP, "Ether", out today via Rise Records.

Watch the clip for the EP's first single, "All I Had To Lose", featuring Mark Morales (SONS OF TEXAS), who is also a member of Morton's live band, below.

As with Morton's solo debut, "Anesthetic", released last year, the guitarist enlisted the talents of various musicians and vocalists to bring his songs to life. "Ether" features appearances by Lzzy Hale (HALESTORM), Howard Jones (KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, LIGHT THE TORCH), John Carbone (MOON TOOTH) and Morales. The EP is made up of three original songs and two covers that once again showcase Morton's diversity as a musician.

Says Morton: "Once again, I've had the great pleasure of working with some amazingly talented artists and friends to assemble this collection of tunes, all of which feature a strong acoustic guitar component. Inspired by the acoustic sets I had the opportunity to perform last spring and summer in support of 'Anesthetic', I began writing some new songs to reflect that more mellow vibe. I'm stoked with the results and I can't wait for everyone to hear what we've been putting together. I'll be debuting these tunes on my upcoming U.K. acoustic tour, so you can hear them live before they're released anywhere else.

"I continue to be honored to have the chance to work with so many incredibly talented people and I remain beyond grateful to the fans that have come along with me and supported these projects. Thanks so much everyone!"

"Ether" track listing:

01. All I Had To Lose (featuring Mark Morales)

02. The Fight (featuring John Carbone)

03. She Talks To Angels (featuring Lzzy Hale)

04. Love My Enemy (featuring Howard Jones)

05. Black (featuring Mark Morales)

"Ether" was produced and mixed by Josh Wilbur (LAMB OF GOD, GOJIRA, TRIVIUM).

Following his first U.K. acoustic performance at the Download festival last year, Morton will return for a handful of special and intimate acoustic shows in January.

Morton comments: "We had such an amazing time with the acoustic set at Download and I'm really looking forward to expanding on that experience with these upcoming shows. Joining me once again will be Mark Morales on vocals, and guitarist extraordinaire Joe Harvatt. I can't wait to make each show extra special for you all with an evening of stories, acoustic versions of many of the songs from 'Anesthetic', and a few covers of some of our favorite tunes. We'll also be debuting some new original material as well! Look forward to seeing you all."

HYBORIAN To Release Volume II Album In March; "Planet Destructor" Single Streaming

Progressive sludge metal outfit, Hyborian, will release their sophomore effort, aptly titled Volume II, on March 20/ In conjunction with the album announcement, Hyborian have released the first single from this monstrous effort, "Planet Destructor", which can be heard below.

The conceptual record picks up where their debut record left off and is accompanied by a 224-page sci-fi novel, The Traveller, which was penned entirely by Hyborian guitarist/vocalist Martin Bush.

A summary of the book is as follows: "The universe is filled with beginnings. Life springs anew in a constant cycle of birth and rebirth, billions upon billions of beginnings, intrinsically linked, each influencing the beginnings that will come after. Every ending is in and of itself a new beginning; what once was, by the very act of ending, becomes the beginning of what is to follow. This particular beginning begins at the end; the end of everything. The universe is dying. It is in the final stages of passing out of existence, which is a beginning as well, the beginning of what comes after. The cycle continues, cascading in an unending series of births and deaths, all linked, each one shaped by the beginnings that preceded it.

"The universe is dying, but it will begin again."

To celebrate the release, Hyborian will be performing an album release show on March 20 at The Riot Room in their hometown of Kansas City, MO, in which they will be supported by label-mates The Lion's Daughter. The event will be sponsored by 98.9 FM.

"Planet Destructor":

The still-unfolding story of Kansas City’s newest metal heroes, Hyborian, is one that is as uncommon as it is familiar. It’s a tale that’s rife with encouragement and demonstrative of how good things come to those willing to put their noses to the grindstone and risk scraping the skin off their faces.

Like hundreds of thousands of musicians from the past, present and future to come, vocalists/guitarists Martin Bush and Ryan Bates and drummer Justin Rippeto had, for years, played in a variety of bands. Most of those outfits generated interest somewhere along a continuum bookended by minor regional success and utter indifference. Curiously, during the period they were struggling in mid-western musical purgatory, the trio did everything together: hanging out, attending shows, trading music, consuming adult beverages... everything, that is, except playing in a band!

“The three of us have known each other most of our adult lives,” explains Bush. “We’ve always been friends, but we’d always been in other projects. We really only started playing together because we all happened to be ending projects at the same time and had a chance to start something new. It was that happy time when you’ve been a musician for 20 years, busting your ass with people you don’t like very much and all of a sudden you get a chance to play with your friends.”

It was 2015 when the three mates saw the forest for the trees and finally got in a room to jam. Once they did, everything seemed to click and ignited a forward-moving firestorm fueled by a metallic enormity that continues to grow. And nowhere is this prodigious growth more evident than on their second and latest album, Volume II. It would be foolish to think that Hyborian’s upward trajectory was charmed and that good fortune smiled down on them immediately after those initial rehearsals. The first set of songs the band wrote were scrapped because they weren’t up to scratch. “They were good and heavy, but not good and heavy enough,” asserts Bush. The decision to wipe the slate clean was followed by an intensive six months of writing which begat 2017’s Hyborian: Vol. 1. The creation of the album saw the band taking the unlikely and ambitious step of building their own studio in order to track the record’s six songs before hiring Justin Mantooth (Bummer, God Maker) and Nick Zampiello (Isis, Pelican, Torche) to mix and master, respectively. Once the debut was released on local Kansas City label, The Company, the band took to viewing its hometown through their van’s rear view mirror, embarking upon copious amounts of DIY touring which led them to being discovered by Season of Mist.

“I honestly don’t know how they found us,” laughs Bush. “We just got a message on Facebook Messenger one day from [label owner] Michael Berberian at like four in the morning. I got a call from Justin telling me, ‘You gotta wake up, right now! You gotta wake up! Right now!’ I saw it and was like, ‘Nah, that can’t be real.’ I took my time, gathered myself and took a shower before I responded. By the end of the day, we were on the phone with U.S. A&R, in a few months we signed contracts and the reissue was released almost a year to the day after its original release.”

Once becoming part of the Season of Mist roster, the band shooed away whatever laurels there were to rest on in order to dig deeper and “keep doing what we were going to be doing anyway.”

“Signing to Season of Mist made more resources available. It allowed us to get a booking agent, for instance, and there has been a very large uptick in attendance at shows with people who’d check us out simply because we’re on the label. But we’re such a new band that it’s hard to know what’s been caused by what. It’s been such a whirlwind.”

The kinetic power of Hyborian: Vol. 1 had seeds planted by the octane-coated stoner metal of High on Fire, the progressive thunder of early Baroness and Mastodon and the manner in which NWOBHM was twisted into thrash metal’s salad days by pimply young Californians. For Volume II, the band knew they wanted to expand upon the foundation laid by the debut. This meant moving out of their home-built studio – local condo developers forced that hand, anyway – and doing something different to bring their already immense sound to the next level. An opportunity arose to block a month of time at a new, multi-million dollar state-of-the-art studio facility in Kansas City called B-24. Studio co-owner and producer Josh Barber (Norma Jean, Hit the Lights) believed in the band and the new material so strongly that he waived the regular house rate which allowed Hyborian to record at his spot, with him behind the board and stay within budget.

“Josh is used to producing the crap out of things, but we did this record as organically as possible, staying out of ProTools as much as we could, using a board mix with really good performances on really nice gear. We basically recorded it as if it were a live record and ended up with one of the more sonically impressive sounding records I’ve heard. Josh just crushed it. Recording there wasn’t our initial plan – it just fell in our lap – but it ended up being a fantastic decision.”

Whether it’s the self-confidence the trio has that allows them to scrap songs at first sign of stagnation and morbidity, incorporate strict song writing rules (“You can bring a riff to practice, but you can’t bring two riffs that go together to practice”) and forego the most basic of “majority rules” mandates (“If there’s a riff two people are super into but one person isn’t, it’s gone. Everybody has to like everything.”), the collaborative gelling of Hyborian’s writing process has resulted in Volume II being a heavier batch of songs that shake off the shackles of stoner metal with Kill ‘Em All wailing and The New Order’s high-end ferocity. Additionally, there exists an anthemic and angelic vocal comingling and an attention to musical detail which, while involved and progressive, never forgets that a song’s strength comes with the listener having something to hang their hat on.

The album starts off with “Driven by Hunger,” a hip-shaking, head nodding shuffler of a riff and a power chord driven chorus energetically injected by overlapping dual voices. “Stormbound” and “Sanctuary” employ massive lurching chord progressions and vintage Hetfield-esque palm muting and down picking in their battalions-over-the-horizon march. A track like “The Entity” inserts tremendous swaths of guitar and propulsive rhythms into traditional song structure and repetition to earworm impact. And then there’s “Expanse,” a tune rife with sickeningly catchy melodies, intricate guitar work and daring vocal harmonies that, together, make the potential for play on commercial hard rock radio a reality.

“In our mind, we’ve always come from a place where we felt we write proggier Motorhead songs,” confesses Bush with a laugh. “We like their dirt, grime and rhythmic pacing and our drummer doesn’t use a double kick pedal, everything is single kick. We’re a rock ‘n’ roll band that also listens to King Crimson and weird conceptual bands.”

Conceptually is where Hyborian truly distinguish themselves, standing head and shoulders above other bands who would dabble in the worlds of fantasy and swords ‘n’ sorcery. Their two albums are conjoined by fictional tales concerning The Traveller, the shadowy, cloaked figure appearing on the cover of Volume 1. Demonstrating how deep the storyline and concept runs, Bush actually wrote a novel (The Traveller: A Hyborian Tale) that chronicles the origin of the central character (and band mascot) while acting as companion piece to Volume II.

“The original idea when we started planning out what Hyborian was going to be was to have three records; the first one was going to be stories from the beginning of time and early humanity before the advent of the written word and that’s where the name comes from – author Robert E. Howard’s Hyborian Age. The second album, which is what ended up happening on Volume II, takes place during the very last days of the existence of the universe and the third record will be about the modern industrial age.

“The book is a short read, but a very convoluted plot. It’s very fantasy and sci-fi based - that’s mostly me more than anyone else in the band. The new record follows the book chronologically. It’s like The Wizard of Oz and Pink Floyd, only way more direct. If you read the lyrics of songs in order it basically tells the exact same story as the book, just way more in-depth.”

Since their formation, Hyborian has been an all-consuming entity. It’s the place where Bush, Bates and Rippeto (the bass position remains vacant, a rotating cast of friends fill in on tours) direct most of their creative energy, visionary thinking, musical ideas and technical focus, at times to the detriment of other areas of their lives. But, as Bukowski once said “find what you love and let it kill you.” Hyborian is what these three men love and want to do and they’re going to do it.

“We’re a really hard working band,” concludes Bush. “I know that’s a tired narrative, but I recently got divorced because of how much time and energy I put into the band. Basically, my ex-wife got sick of how hard we would work on this and was like, ‘You have to stop playing or you gotta git.’ It’s only really been two-and-a-half years since we formed, we haven’t stopped since we started and haven’t scratched the surface of this band yet.”

IRON MAIDEN Bassist STEVE HARRIS Reveals Music Icon He Was Too Nervous To Speak To - "I Didn't Want To Act Like A Fanboy"

Featured in the latest edition of Classic Rock magazine, Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris revealed one time he was too nervous to speak to one of his music idols.

Harris: "I have people that I look up to too. I avoided meeting Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson for so long because I didn’t know what I’d say to him. I ended up playing tennis with Peter Gabriel once, just because he was on the court in the same hotel as me. I don’t know if he even knew who I was, but I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to get tongue-tied. I didn’t want to act like a fanboy, even though I felt like one.”

The new issue of Classic Rock can be purchased here.

Explorer1 Music (E1) recently announced a new collaboration in the US with their release of Harris’ second album with British Lion, the ‘up close and personal’ side project he devotes his time to, outside of his Maiden activities, which will be followed by an 18-date U.S. tour (details below). The Burning features 11 new songs and will be released worldwide on January 17 in digipak CD, double gatefold vinyl and digital download formats.

In this new video from Nights With Alice Cooper, Steve Harris discusses the upcoming release:

British Lion comprises vocalist Richard Taylor, guitarists David Hawkins and Grahame Leslie, Steve Harris on bass & keyboards and drummer Simon Dawson. Recorded, engineered and mixed at Barnyard Studios by Tony Newton and produced by Steve Harris, The Burning is crammed with powerful hard rock melodies. Find album pre-orders at this location.

Richard Taylor says: “We’ve been working on The Burning for the past couple of years and everyone is really pleased with the results. We started playing some of the songs live on recent tours and got a fantastic reaction from our fans so we are really excited to be sharing this album with the world. We’re also looking forward to heading out on the road again and seeing everyone at the shows.”

Paul Woolnough, CEO and Co-Founder of Explorer1 Music says: "Explorer1 offers a completely new turn-key solution for touring and recording artists such as British Lion in today's fast-changing industry. After watching the band evolve over the last couple of years and recently launching E1, it seemed the perfect time to partner and collaborate on the US release of The Burning’and British Lion's touring activities. I am proud to welcome Steve and the rest of British Lion into the E1 family and look forward to working together for many years to come."

METALLICA's JAMES HETFIELD To Appear At Opening Reception Of 'Reclaimed Rust' At Petersen Automotive Museum

METALLICA frontman James Hetfield recently donated his collection of 10 highly regarded custom cars to the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. Starting February 1, Hetfield's cars, a number of guitars, photos and memorabilia will be on the floor of the venue in the museum's Bruce Meyer Family Gallery until October.

Hetfield's collection, dubbed "Reclaimed Rust: The James Hetfield Collection", includes Voodoo Priest, based on a '37 Lincoln Zephyr, a '36 Auburn roadster named Slow Burn, a Delahaye inspired '34 Packard, Aquarius, a '36 Ford in bare metal called Iron Fist, a purple '56 Ford F-100 pickup truck, and three cars by custom fabricator Rick Dore: Black Pearl, a custom 1948 Jaguar, a '52 Olds named Grinch, and Skyscraper, a 1953 Buick Skylark.

"'Reclaimed Rust' brings together two industries that go hand in hand with artist expression," said Petersen Automotive Museum executive director Terry L. Karges in a statement.

"This is the first time the Hetfield collection will be showcased to the public and we can't wait to share the inspiration behind these extraordinary vehicles with the world."

Hetfield will be at the museum on January 30, when a ticketed opening reception is being held along with a "fireside chat" and an auction of two of the METALLICA guitarist/vocalist's limited-edition ESP guitars.

Check out a "Reclaimed Rust" image gallery at Autoblog.com.

As previously reported, Insight Editions has set a May 5 release date for "Reclaimed Rust: The Four-Wheeled Creations Of James Hetfield". In the book, Hetfield opens up his garage for an exclusive tour of the highlights of his incredible collection of restored and customized classic cars.

A few years ago, Hetfield said that he approaches building hot rods the same way he approaches writing music. "Building cars is always an escape," he explained. "It's the same with music. I don't know what I'm gonna make. Cars are like people to me; they like love. They love to be touched, they love to be handled, they love to be driven... they love to be admired… This is a form of expression and freedom, and you can get away with driving something like that but still have your personality show through. It's just like looking at art. You look at a piece and you go, 'I don't get it.' And you look at something else and say, 'That is amazing. I wish I thought of that.'"

Last September, METALLICA canceled its tour of Australia and New Zealand so that Hetfield could enter rehab to battle his addictions.

Exclusive: THE BROKEN BEATS Reveal “Close Your Eyes” Video

The Broken Beats has premiered their new video for “Close Your Eyes” through BraveWords!

“Close Your Eyes” is about the small moment when happiness occurs and you try to stop time in order to maintain the intoxication. “Close Your Eyes” is a song written by Kim Munk from The Broken Beats and is about understanding that it is all about right now, right here. In a moment, it's all over, so be sure to enjoy it while you can. A job is good, but you can always think of something else.

The Broken Beats are back with their unforgettable and easy-going sound of whirling power pop. Dreamy, spherical and quite sentimental. The band, with singer, guitarist and songwriter Kim Munk in front, has had no less than 56 members over time. Among other things, The Broken Beats is known for fantastic live concerts (among other things played in slow motion) and the radio hits "Essentials" and "The Rules".

The Broken Beats have returned now and this time they turned up the simplicity of the swirling complex and made the music a focused delight for the ear. With reality at stake and eternity right in the background, The Broken Beats is back with an awful lot to say, both where it does good and where it hurts.

LORDI Launch Lyric Video For "Like A Bee To The Honey", Written By PAUL STANLEY And JEAN BEAUVIOR, Feat. MICHAEL MONROE

Lordi will release their tenth album, Killection, on January 31 via AFM Records. Not only is the album a brand new concept in itself - a fictitious collection of hits from the years and decades past - but it also brings a truly hidden gem into the daylight: one of the songs on the album is "Like A Bee To The Honey", which was written by KISS lead singer Paul Stanley together with Jean Beauvoir, known for working with names such as Bruce Springsteen, The Ramones and of course KISS. The song that had been collecting dust in Beauvoir's desk drawer ever since the end of the 1980's has now been handed down to Lordi.

"This is a tremendous honour to a band that wouldn't even exist without KISS. Simply having the privilege to listen to a song from the 1980's that no fan has ever heard before.. and then to get to be the artist that brings the song for everyone to hear - it is mind-blowing", Mr. Lordi states.

Mr. Lordi and the band's guitarist Amen had been making songs together with Jean Beauvoir as a trio, and one of these songs, "Scream Demon", made its way to the new album. It was during these songwriting sessions in Helsinki that the very existence of "Like A Bee To The Honey" came up: Jean thought the song would fit the new record perfectly, and the band was more than ready to get this rare gem on their album. The song is made even more unique by its saxophone solo - first one ever in Lordi's history - performed by the Hanoi Rocks legend Michael Monroe.

A lyric video for "Like A Bee To The Honey" can be found below.

Officially, Lordi were founded in 1992 by lead singer, songwriter, visual art designer and costume designer Mr. Lordi. The band has deep Finnish roots, originating from the city of Rovaniemi, in Lapland. In 2006 they celebrated their international breakthrough by winning the Eurovision Song Contest (“Hard Rock Hallelujah”). But is it possible that this is only a pale misperception of our poor, small, pathetic reality?

What if Lordi would have already been making music since the early 70's? And what if they have been releasing one hit single after the other since those times and now, almost 50 years later, are looking back on a full collection of songs that have been successful ever since? This is exactly the idea that Lordi are executing, with their newest studio album, Killection.

Killection will be released on January 31 via AFM Records. Once more Mr. Lordi, the master of the masquerade, presents us with one of his ideas, absurd and genius at the same time, and comes up with a concept that has never been done before in the music industry: Killection is a compilation album that simply says “what if” Lordi had been in existence since the early 70's. It contains all their imaginary hit singles from different periods done with painstaking attention to detail using authentic studios and vintage technology. This is how they would have sounded if Lordi would have made music back then and therefore would have had the hit material to release this compilation now.

This is how Mr. Lordi himself sums it up: "Killection is a fictional compilation album. It contains songs that Lordi would have written between the early 70's through the mid-90's. The compilation contains one "brand new" song from 2019 as well, cause that’s somehow always typical for compilations."

Killection tracklisting:

"Radio SCG 10"
"Horror For Hire"
"Shake The Baby Silent"
"Like A Bee To The Honey"
"Apollyon"
"SCG10 The Last Hour"
