HYDROGYN Introduce New Singer HOLLY HINES FREED; New Album In The Works

Jeff Westlake, the guitarist and founder of rockers Hydrogyn, has checked in with the following update:

"The engines are firing back up with the first day of 2020.

The most asked question to this point is, where did you find (singer) Holly Hines Freed? I first met Holly Hines in late summer of 2009. I was introduced to her by Scot Clayton, a mutual friend and big Hydrogyn fan. Scot had been working with her and her band in his SMC studios in Huntsville, Alabama. Upon meeting Holly, I learned she was a big Hydrogyn fan as well. And, she was a great singer.

After a couple months of talking, I was asked to produce an album for her band. That production took place at the end of 2010 right after I had completed the Judgement album for Hydrogyn. Our ability to tour that album was snuffed out by a medical situation with then-singer Julie. That allowed me to do the project with Holly and her band. As time went on, I developed a great relationship with Holly. We stayed in touch and even would plan trips to visit in free time.

Fast forward to 2013, and Holly has a new improved band wanting to do a new album. Her and her new man toy, Jacob, came to my place to visit and to talk about the new project. From the very start, Holly and I connected musically. Her voice is absolutely amazing. But I soon discovered something I didn’t get a chance to see the first time around — her ability to create. The first time around, she was basically just the singer. This time, she was full-on creating ... and in a big way. I also was blown away that her voice had somehow improved. I was not expecting that because it was already so good. I remembered how my jaw hit the floor the first time I stood in front of her and experienced her voice. There is no reason to lie — I had been trying to figure out a way to work with Holly since 2009. I knew I loved her voice. But when I witnessed her creative side, I knew it was something I really really needed to do.

We worked for about a year on the album. In that year, we have put together a great piece of work. I watched not only Holly’s confidence grow, but I saw Jacob’s flourish as well. Our partnership went from studio to the live show. My involvement was only in the arrangements of the show, but I got to witness it live. And I thoroughly was impressed.

In 2015, when I started working on a series of solo things, I immediately thought of the chance to create with Holly. We did one song together, and it was a very easy process. However, the one thing I didn’t want to do was upset the situation in her band. Over time, Julie left Hydrogyn. My first thought for a new singer was Holly. But, she still was with her band, and I still wasn’t going to cause problems. So, we found a different singer in Erica and did a very aggressive and less melodic album in Redemption. As time passed, we had plenty of unfortunate setbacks that were no one’s fault. As a result, the band just stopped. In addition, we had problems with the label that hurt the release. That — along with dog attacks, surgeries, living and the death of Chris Sammons — made it clear that it just wasn’t in the cards for Hydrogyn.

But in the fall of 2019, I again approached Holly about writing together. At the same time, Erica announced she was going to do something different. So, my working with Holly morphed into what I had wanted in 2015 — her fronting Hydrogyn.

As I found out in 2015, her voice has again improved. I simply was floored by the depth and the creativity. In 2019, I’ve found that her voice is better than ever. Her creativity is still off the hook as well.

In 2020, we are bringing the music, a new look and a different energy. You always have to grow. Filling the shoes of what Julie created is no easy task. Erica did it in her own way, and it worked. Holly brings back the melodic side of what Julie created and also the aggressive side of what Erica brought. Together it brings a new Hydrogyn that is exciting, borrowing from itself but adding a whole new spin that is created by quite possibly the best all-around vocalist I have ever worked with.

The one thing I never thought the band would find is a player to replace Chris. Holly again had that answer in her husband Jacob, who plays and thinks a lot like Chris.

Hydrogyn ... The Boiling Point ... 2020 marks a new lease on life and an entirely new creativity with a new and amazing voice, a new bass player and a sense of renewed energy that I hope you the fans will love."

Ex-DEATH Drummer RICHARD CHRISTY Pays Tribute To NEIL PEART With 'Tom Sawyer' Play-Along (Video)

Actor, comedian and acclaimed heavy metal drummer Richard Christy has paid tribute to Neil Peart, who died on January 7 in Santa Monica, California after a three-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. The iconic RUSH drummer was 67 years old.

Christy, who has played with CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED, ICED EARTH, DEATH and CONTROL DENIED, and who currently works for "The Howard Stern Show", took to his social media on Saturday (January 11) to upload a video of him playing along to the RUSH classic "Tom Sawyer". He wrote in an accompanying caption: Here’s a drum video tribute to the greatest drummer who ever lived and the greatest drum solo ever created RIP Neil Peart @rushtheband #TomSawyer"

When Peart's death was first made public on Friday (January 10), Christy tweeted: "Just heard of the passing of the greatest drummer who ever lived. An influence on millions. One of the best days of my life was getting to meet him in person and shake the hand that played Tom Sawyer. RIP Neil Peart @jonhein"

The 45-year-old Christy began working on "The Howard Stern Show" in 2004 after winning the "Get John's Job" contest. He is known for his prank calls, song parodies, personality and stunts performed on the show. He is also a stand-up comic and an actor, appearing in and directing several independent films.

Peart joined RUSH in 1974. He was considered one of the best rock drummers of all time, alongside John Bonham of LED ZEPPELIN; Keith Moon of THE WHO; and Ginger Baker of CREAM. Peart was also RUSH's primary lyricist, drawing inspiration from everything from sci-fi to Ayn Rand.

SLIPKNOT Releases 'Pollution' Short Film

SLIPKNOT has shared "Pollution", a 20-minute short film directed by the band's own M. Shawn Crahan. The expanded film, which cane be seen below, centers around SLIPKNOT's official music video for "Nero Forte", which captures the band delivering a pummeling technicolor performance. "Nero Forte" is featured on the Grammy Award-winning group's chart-topping new album, "We Are Not Your Kind".

Crahan elaborated on the film, stating: "I set out to make a short film that makes you question your own existence, here in this reality. When you lay down in your bed, next to the one you love, do you ever ask yourself — is it possible that this person could slit my throat while I'm sleeping? Enjoy. Pollution is everywhere."

Guitarist Jim Root recently told Kerrang! magazine about "Nero Forte": "This is a Clown song, which is amazing. This one is going to be great live. It's very percussive, and reminiscent of 'Psychosocial' [from 2008's 'All Hope Is Gone'] — but maybe an evolution of 'Psychosocial'. Obviously, Clown is a drummer and percussionist, but he's also a songwriter — and he always has been. Now we're able to collaborate as songwriters, and this is what we end up with. When Corey [Taylor, vocals] came in and started diving into the vocals, he came up with this extra melody in the chorus line very late into the process. That really drew me into this song."

Corey admitted to WhatCulture Music that he "was struggling with" the chorus to "Nero Forte" during the writing process. "Everything I wrote just didn't match the great shit that was going on and the lyrics and then that bridge," he said. "The chorus, it just always felt like the ass was falling out of it, for lack of a better term. But, honestly, I took my cue from a melody line that Clown had put on there with a keyboard, actually, which I didn't even hear that melody line until… Then he pointed it out. He was, like, 'Listen to this,' and I actually listened to it and that became the high falsetto vibe. And then I wrote the harmony to that. And then it just took off from there. So it was one of those things where — it was almost like learning a new lesson. Sometimes you don't have the best idea, but it doesn't mean that the best idea isn't there. And we just kind of went from there."

"We Are Not Your Kind" sold 118,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in its first week of release to land at position No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

SLIPKNOT's COREY TAYLOR Teams Up With Special Effects Legend TOM SAVINI For Horror Directorial Debut

According to Daily Dead, SLIPKNOT and STONE SOUR frontman Corey Taylor has teamed up with Tom Savini Studios for his upcoming horror film. Savini is a horror filmmaking icon, who made his name working on makeup and visual effects for "Dawn Of The Dead" (1978) and "Friday The 13th" (1980). He's also recognizable for acting in several Robert Rodriguez-directed projects, including the "Machete" films and "From Dusk 'Til Dawn".

Taylor's directorial debut is currently in pre-production, and both Savini and his right-hand man, Jason Baker, will be joining forces with Taylor for the project.

Baker said: "I am thrilled that we are able to finally start slowly talking about the fact that Tom and I are going to be involved with Corey Taylor's new horror movie, and that we will be handling the special makeup effects for it. We're not allowed to talk about plot details or titles or anything like that right now, but I will say that the script is totally fucked up. Corey's got some really sick things planned for this, and I'm super excited to be a part of it."

He continued: "We have always had such a great time collaborating with Corey, doing his masks and everything, but the best thing about working with him is that I made a friend. Corey's such a wonderful, fun person to be around. The guy has been through hell, and to come out of everything that he has laughing about it, those kinds of people are such unicorns. So when they come into your life, you just want to hold on to them with everything, and, of course, you want to work with them and do whatever you can to support their creativity. We're extremely excited."

Last month, Taylor told Kerrang! magazine that he recently completed his first horror screenplay. The singer revealed: "I wrote a script for a horror movie that I'm really stoked about. And I just broke the skin on book five, so I'm working on that as well. I've got a lot of things going on, but I'm also making sure there's plenty of time for my family, my marriage and home... You never know how much time you're gonna get there."

Taylor also mentioned his script to Rolling Stone, saying: "I'm actually working on a movie right now. I finished a script and I'm aggressively looking for investors and producers. I've got all this stuff that I still want to get out of my system."

Taylor is a longtime horror fan and even appeared as a supporting character in the 2014 horror movie "Fear Clinic", which starred "A Nightmare On Elm Street" legend Robert Englund.

Taylor told The Pulse Of Radio a while back what it was like to watch himself onscreen: "There's nothing like the nervousness that comes of knowing that you're gonna have to watch yourself on a giant screen and hope that you don't suck at what you're doing. But it was great, man, because you're watching it remembering everything that you had done, you know, and you're trying to pay attention to the story and hope that the movie is cohesive, but at the same time watching yourself, hoping that you're holding your own."

Taylor also made a cameo in "Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens" and appeared in the 2016 film "Officer Downe", which was directed by his SLIPKNOT bandmate Shawn "Clown" Crahan.

SLIPKNOT has been on tour behind its sixth LP, "We Are Not Your Kind", which arrived in August.

MYRKUR To Release 'Folkesange' Album In March

Danish composer, vocalist and classically trained multi-instrumentalist Myrkur (a.k.a. Amalie Bruun) has always paved her own path and challenged underground preconceptions of heavy genres. Just after newfound motherhood, Bruun set out on a journey into the very heart of the Scandinavian culture that marked her own childhood with the release of her new album, "Folkesange". Due out March 20 via Relapse Records, "Folkesange" relinquishes black metal for a refined yet far-reaching evocation of traditional folk, combining songs ancient and new to sublimely resonant effect.

Today, Myrkur has unveiled lead single and album opener "Ella" which she explains is "the result of years of studying, playing and listening to traditional Nordic folk music. This is my version of a new folk song, with roots planted in history and in the past. It is my ode to mankind and our connection with nature — a rite of passage as a woman and a rebirth ritual in the sea."

She continues: "Three years ago I decided to share a video where I performed an old Scandinavian folk song on the nyckelharpa. After this, I realized that I had a strong need to create an album within this universe and that other people also wished to hear this. So I started working on picking out what old songs to reinterpret as well as write my own version of this. 'Ella' is this."

On Myrkur's first two full-length studio albums (2015's "M" and 2017's "Mareridt"), she recast black metal in the most personal yet expansive of terms, their blending of Bruun's Danish folk roots with tempestuous internal struggles breathing new life into a subgenre whose followers can be rigidly possessive.

After the nightmare-induced visions that wrought themselves throughout 2017's immensely acclaimed "Mareridt", "Folkesange" offers an emotional sanctuary, a means to reconnect to something permanent and nature-aligned. It's an awareness that's become deeply bound to the album's organic, regenerative spirit.

Storytelling, rites of passage, and the invocation of a continuity that passes through time and generation are all part of folk music's tapestry, and "Folkesange" taps into all these currents in their most essential form. In part a purist's approach to the genre, free from over-interpretation and fusion, the use of Kulning (an ancient Scandinavian herding call) and traditional instruments throughout, such as nyckelharpa, lyre and mandola offer a deeper, more tactile connection to their source, an unbroken line of communication back to the past.

But the album is no museum piece; it resonates in the here and now, aided by the spacious production of HEILUNG member and musical collaborator Christopher Juul. Cinematic yet intimate, "Folkesange" exists in a state of boundless reverie, bourne by string-led drones, cyclical, elegiac rhythms and Bruun's frictionless voice, all carrier signals for deep-rooted, ancestral memories, and associations felt on an elemental level.

An immersive experience in its own right, but also belonging to a wider, pagan folk-based renaissance that has attracted a devoted following worldwide, "Folkesange" answers a need that has become ever more pressing in turbulent times. A zeroing in on a resonance that is both intrinsic and enduring, it's a rediscovery of personal grounding, and an experience that reaches beyond culture to remind us of a shared, deeply rooted inheritance. A tuning fork that binds the personal and the universal, "Folkesange" is a reminder that the most transcendent experiences are those closest to home.

There will be several "Folkesange" limited deluxe vinyl versions available.

JOE SATRIANI To Release 'Shapeshifting' Album In The Spring

Joe Satriani is ready to kick off the new decade with a new album and world tour. Set for release this spring, "Shapeshifting" marks the legendary guitarist's 18th studio album in his nearly 35-year career in music. More details on the new album to come shortly.

As previously announced, "The Shapeshifting Tour" opens on April 15 with a 42 date European leg beginning in Germany and winding up with a trio of mid-June shows in Spain with more dates to be announced soon. The set list for the live show will feature tracks from the new "Shapeshifting" album in addition to many of his classic fan favorites, including "Surfing With The Alien", "Always with Me, Always With You" and "Flying In A Blue Dream". The 2020 touring band features celebrated drummer Kenny Aronoff (JOHN FOGERTY), bassist Bryan Beller (ARISTOCRATS) and keyboardist Rai Thistlethwayte (THIRSTY MERC) joining Satriani on guitar.

On January 15, Satriani will be inducted into the 2020 Metal Hall Of Fame by his friend and former guitar student Steve Vai. The ceremony, hosted by television and radio personality Eddie Trunk, will take place during a non-profit charity gala whose proceeds go to bringing free drum therapy services to special needs children at specific health facilities and community centers throughout the United States.

On January 16, Joe and Trunk will meet up again, this time at Los Angeles's famous Rainbow Bar & Grill on Sunset Blvd. for Trunk's monthly "LA Invasion" show airing live on SiriusXM 106 Volume channel. The show will air live from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. PT and replay Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. ET and 10 p.m. to midnight p.m. ET. It will also be available on the SiriusXM app.

In other Satriani music-related news, two sets of Joe's music have now been added to streaming platforms. "Additional Creations And Bonus Tracks", featuring alternate versions of four songs from his "Engines Of Creation" album along with 12 other various bonus tracks join a newly released deluxe edition of his classic 1987 album, "Surfing With The Alien (Deluxe Edition)", which arrived late last year featuring new artwork and a bonus disc, "Stripped - The Backing Tracks". The latter, launched as a limited run for Black Friday's Record Store Day in November, features the songs from the album with all guitar solos removed. The set also features new artwork with Satriani's guitar replacing the iconic Silver Surfer on the cover.

Satriani said: "Seeing my chrome guitar bursting through a multicolor wormhole seems quite fitting. It's as if it always belonged there."

Since 1987, Satriani's platinum, dual-Grammy-nominated album "Surfing With The Alien" has established him as a legend in the music world for over 30 years. Satriani explained his decision to make the stripped version, after years of reluctance for such a work: "When I build a track from scratch, it's a kind of musical alchemy, a mixture of voodoo, mojo, blood, sweat, tears, prayers… and a lot of hard work. I cherish them because of this... it's no wonder I've been reluctant to release them (stripped)." Now he is truly excited about giving this new and exciting versions of his music to the fans, saying: "You can play along with these tracks or just sit back and enjoy the mixes as they are."

For two decades, the guitar virtuoso has traveled the world, playing to sold-out crowds as both a headliner and as founder of the all-star "G3" guitar extravaganza. Satriani's studio and live recordings have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide to date and of his many solo albums, two have gone platinum and four others went gold, with 15 Grammy nominations between them. His side project CHICKENFOOT, featuring former VAN HALEN frontman Sammy Hagar, former VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony and RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS drummer Chad Smith, saw its debut album certified gold and their second studio album debut at No. 9.

SCARDUST Release Official Live Video For New Song "Tantibus II"

Israeli symphonic/progressive metal band, Scardust, have unveiled a new taste of what to expect on the follow-up recording that they're currently prepping for a fall 2020 release.

At the band's recent, sold-out Scarfest in their home city of Tel Aviv, the group debuted the new song “Tantibus II”, complete with backing vocals by the 12-person “Hellscore” choir. Professionally filmed live footage of the song - which showcases the band's impeccable musicianship and the diverse range of vocalist Noa Gruman, can be seen below.

Says Gruman, “Scarfest was a magical evening, and our full-length set with the Hellscore choir featured several songs from our upcoming album. ‘Tantibus II’ was one of them, and it's now released for the world to see as a teaser for what's to come.”

“Tantibus II” is a sequel to “Tantibus”, a song from the group's 2015 debut EP, Shadow. It further explores a common theme scattered throughout Scardust's music - the human desire to escape from reality. In its lyrics, sleep is used as a metaphor for the things that we do to detach ourselves from our day-to-day routines. The demon described in the song is the Old Hag, the villain in a fable about a supernatural creature who sits on dreamers' chests and strangles them. The tale relates to a phenomenon called sleep paralysis, in which dreamers are struck with great fear and a feeling that they cannot wake up.

ICE NINE KILLS Raise $54,000 (AUD) In Aid Of Australian Fire Relief Efforts

Boston horror-inspired metal band, Ice Nine Kills, have successfully raised over $54,000 (AUD) following an overwhelming response to their limited-edition exclusive t-shirt sale that took place earlier this month to help aid the Australian wildfire relief efforts.

Profits from the sale are being donated equally between Australia Zoo's Wildlife Warriors - a non-profit organization founded by the late Steve Irwin and his wife, Terri Irwin, to aid in the protection of injured, threatened or endangered wildlife-and the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery.

Ice Nine Kills recently made their inaugural appearance in Australia in December of last year as part of the Good Things Festival (Sydney), along with a handful of headlining gigs in Brisbane and Melbourne.

The first release from this new team will be South X South Dakota, the band’s tribute to the icons of southern rock which features new covers of classics by the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, .38 Special, Blackfoot, Marshall Tucker Band and more. A release date is set for late April, as Ron Keel Band prepares for a busy summer touring season while writing and recording a new all-original album to be released on HighVolMusic in early 2021.

“This is a win-win for everybody,” Chavis proclaims. “Ron Keel brings a lot to the table and a lot to the label. AFTERBIRTH Feat. HELMET, ARTIFICIAL BRAIN Members To Release Four Dimensional Flesh Album In March; "Spiritually Transmitted Disease" Single Streaming

Pioneering brutal death metal band, Afterbirth, have unveiled a new song, "Spiritually Transmitted Disease". The track is the first single from the group's forthcoming sophomore album, Four Dimensional Flesh, which will see a March 13 release via Unique Leader. Listen to "Spiritually Transmitted Disease" below.

The 11 track album finds the venerable Long Island group - which features members of Helmet and Artificial Brain - continuing to push their complex, progressive, and devastatingly heavy take on extreme metal forward into new realms of musical nuance and songwriting prowess. The effort was recorded by Colin Marston (Gorguts, Artificial Brain, Imperial Triumphant) with artwork for the effort coming from Kishor Haulenbeek.

Born from a grueling three year writing process, Four Dimensional Flesh shows Afterbirth at the height of their powers and further cements their place in the pantheon of underground death metal, which they have held since their formation in 1993.

The group commented, “The material on our second album, 'Four Dimensional Flesh', is the end result of a creative process that started in late 2016 and concluded in the summer of 2019. It is a body of work that is loosely conceptual in nature and continues to expand upon ideas put forth on the debut while also introducing some new elements for the listener.

"Four Dimensional Flesh once again features cover art by artist Kishor Haulenbeek and is the band’s first recording with engineer Colin Marston. This album, not unlike the rigorous process the band members engaged in while creating it, will be what we hope is a profound musical journey undertaken by any and all who venture to listen.

"The members of Afterbirth believe, with every confidence, that 'Four Dimensional Flesh' is the next logical step in the band’s evolution. It is an album that most certainly contains some of our most brutal, intense and heavy music to date, but it also embodies some of our most impassioned, nuanced and forward-thinking material as well.”

TENGGER CAVALRY Guitarist PAT REILLY Debuts "Dracarys" Visualizer; Debut Solo Album Out Now

Guitarist Pat Reilly (aka Pat the Panther) has revealed a new visualizer video for “Dracarys”, the Game of Thrones-inspired track from his solo album, Path To Transcendence. Check out the song below:

Path To Transcendence, released independently on January 3, is the first solo offering the from the Tengger Cavalry guitarist. Reilly credits late Tengger Cavalry frontman Nature Ganganbaigal as the inspiration behind bringing this solo album to fruition.

“The creation of this album was set in motion largely a result of a conversation that Nature and I had,” Reilly says. “Nature called me up one day early last year for the purpose of telling me that if I put out a full-length album, he would pay for half of the costs and release it under his label. Although I had always wanted to put out an album, I never really mustered up the drive or motivation to go through the process. It almost felt out of reach since I was basically on my own as a solo artist. This conversation with Nature really lit a fire under me, sending me into creative overdrive.”

Reilly went the way many independent musicians, running a successful Kickstarter campaign that largely covered the cost of the album, while spending hours writing, recording, producing and mastering the tracks. Aside from guest drummers and vocalists, Path To Transcendence is completely self-produced, written, performed and engineered. “It wasn't long after my Kickstarter ended that we found out Nature had passed,” Reilly adds. “I wish he could hear the final result of what he set in motion.”

An accomplished musician, Reilly has played several hundred shows throughout the United States, Canada and Europe with Tengger Cavalry, Through the Discipline, Vajra, and Awaken, most notably performing with Tengger Cavalry at New York City's prestigious Carnegie Hall.

Although Reilly’s musical passions lie in the metal genre, his songwriting is quite diverse, ranging from classically composed intros to full-fledged groove-based metal compositions. While many listeners may consider him a shredder, Reilly prides himself on the emotional element of songwriting and guitar playing rather than purposely being technical.

“I'm passionate about music and the effect it has on the listener,” says Reilly. “When I create music, I'm transcending my physical being into some spiritual in-between. ‘Path To Transcendence’ is inspired by that concept. When I'm listening or writing or otherwise deeply involved in the music, I'm passing into that meditative state. My hope is that I can somewhat bring my listeners the same experience when they listen to ‘Path To Transcendence.’”

Path To Transcendence is available here.

VINNIE MOORE's Soul Shifter Album To Be Released In Europe / UK Next Month; Guests Include RUDY SARZO, JORDAN RUDESS, And Others

US guitar legend, Vinnie Moore, has announced the release of his new album, Soul Shifter, in Europe and the UK on February 21 via Mind’s Eye Music / Cargo Records UK.

The follow-up to Vinnie Moore’s 2015 release, Aerial Visions, is Vinnie's ninth solo album features guest appearances by legendary artists Rudy Sarzo and Jordan Rudess, with Richie Monica on drums, Michael Bean (bassist from Vinnie’s Time Odyssey album), John Cassidy (keyboards), and John Pessoni (drums).

Vinnie is considered one of the originators of shred guitar, and has released eight influential solo albums, and six albums and a live DVD as a member of rock royalty legends UFO. He’s made countless album guest appearances, and has even recorded the soundtrack for a Pepsi TV commercial. He’s been a member of Alice Cooper’s band and was opening act for Rush on their Roll The Bones tour with his own band. His solo and UFO recordings as well as live performances have amassed rave reviews all around the globe from both fans and music press, catapulting  him into guitar icon distinction! He has been an inspiration for fans and guitarists worldwide.

Say’s Vinnie, “I have been touring all over the world extensively with UFO and my solo band for the past 16 years. I started this album a couple years back and have been working on it religiously between tours. It’s quite different than any of my others. It has elements of things I’ve done in the past, but has gone much deeper into certain areas. There is an overall sort of contrast between energetic upbeat songs, versus ballad-like soulful ones which has always been a big part of my style. There are some Jam elements in places too. This is likely the most emotional and soulful thing I have ever done. Very moody, with lots of feel. I wrote a song as a tribute to Carlos Santana, called 'Brother Carlos', and another called 'Gainesville Station', which is a tip of the hat to Steve Gaines. Both players were huge influences on me when I was learning to play, and continue to be now.

“When something moves me, what I am feeling flows directly into music. That’s how I deal with reality. I woke up one morning to the news that Chris Cornell had passed and it really hit me hard. I went into my studio, picked up a guitar and immediately wrote and recorded 'Mystified'. Without intending to do so, and because of what was going on around me at the time, this album in a way became a tribute to people who meant something to me. The Allman Brothers were always one of my favorite bands and I was working on a song called 'Soul Rider' that was inspired by them. While writing it, unfortunately Greg Allman left us. A lot of heart went into recording that song. Also, I wrote a song called 'Heard You Were Gone' for my friend and band mate Elliott (Dean Guitars) who left us unexpectedly a couple years back.

“There are definitely some downhearted cathartic moments on this album, but they’re balanced out with songs like 'Kung Fu Grip' and 'Funk Bone Jame' that represent the opposite side of my personality, which is my constant joking and quirky sense of humor.”

Vinnie has done hundreds of shows all over the planet, including Europe, UK, Scandinavia, Brazil, US, as well as India, S. Korea, Lebanon, Mexico, Russia, and Canada. The UFO Last Orders tour began in England in March, and will continue in the US on October 9.

“Ancient astronaut theorists suggest that Vinnie may have been spawned from alien DNA! Or at least his left index finger anyway.” - Giorgio Thessaloniki, Ancient Aliens

“Solo records are a great vehicle because the canvas is totally open and I can paint whatever and wherever I want. There’s total freedom in not having boundaries. All of my influences are on the canvas, from Rock to Blues to Be-Bop to Funk, even R&B and beyond. I have always felt music deeply even before I played guitar. After I began playing, it became my vehicle to express and release what I feel inside. I love channeling my soul into melodies and songs.”

Tracklisting:

"Funk Bone Jam"
"Same Sun Shines"
"Kung Fu Grip"
"Mystified"
"Brother Carlos"
"Gainesville Station"
"Soul Rider"
"Mirage"
"Heard You Were Gone"
"Across The Ages"

MIKE PORTNOY Posts Rare 2003 Video Of DREAM THEATER Performing "The Necormancer" - "One Last Tribute To NEIL PEART And RUSH..."

Drum legend Mike Portnoy (Sons Of Apollo, ex-Dream Theater) has checked in with the following update:

"One last tribute to Neil and Rush...

Through all my years in Dream Theater, as the setlist writer in the band I would often throw in one-off Rush covers into the setlists. It was a tradition everytime we played in Toronto as I threw in 'Jacobs Ladder', 'A Passage to Bangkok' and 'The Camera Eye' throughout the years at our Toronto shows. We also covered 'Different Strings', 'Tears' and excerpts of 'Working Man', 'By Tor And The Snow Dog', 'The Analog Kid', '2112 Grand Finale' and 'La Villa Strangiato' through the years as well.

But there was one evening in the summer of 2003 when we were playing at the Jones Beach Amphitheater in New York, that I decided to throw in a real deep Rush gemstone to the completely unsuspecting audience... and later that Christmas, I posted a video from my archives to share it with everybody as a Holiday gift.

I think with Neil’s passing it seems like a timely time to re-share this DT rarity from my archives as a tribute to our biggest influences and our fallen hero...here is DT’s 2003 rendition of Rush’s 1975 classic deep cut: 'The Necromancer'."

Peart, the drummer and lyricist for Canadian rock legends Rush, died on Tuesday, January 7th in Santa Monica, California at age 67, following a three-year battle with brain cancer. Portnoy checked in with the following message shortly after his death :

"My initial post earlier upon hearing of Neil’s passing that has been making the social media rounds was just a spontaneous writing... but honestly there’s so much more I want to say.

I’ve been replaying stories of times we spent together, reading some of his emails to me, looking at some of the personal pics he’s sent me through the years of him and his daughter growing up, etc., and of course, 40 years of his mammoth influence on me... all the Rush shows through the years, etc. I still don’t know if I can properly put all my thoughts down as frankly I’m still devastated and a bit paralyzed with shock (as I know MILLIONS of people around the world are...)

But before I was able to write today’s earlier initial post on social media, I was asked to call into Sirius XM Volume (along with Eddie Trunk) as well as briefly speak with Billboard, so here’s that chat with Billboard for a few further thoughts on the man who will always be my drumming hero."

Following is an excerpt from the Billboard story, published by Gary Graff.

Portnoy: "I discovered him and Rush when I was in high school, back in the beginning of the 80s. He had everything that I always dreamt of becoming. He was just a master of what he did; he played this mammoth drum kit and was the master of the odd time signatures and just had chops for days. At the time, no other progressive drummers were raising the bar to the level he did. I'd never seen or heard another drummer like him. He had the same kind of impact on the drum community that somebody like Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen had on the guitar community. Like tens of thousands of other young drummers at the time, I just became obsessed with him and everything about him.

That was around the Permanent Waves/Moving Pictures era. Once I got hooked, I worked my way backwards and became completely obsessed with all those albums, especially the progressive ones like Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings; I even used Pert shampoo! In my high school year book, my future plans were to become the next Neil Peart. He was my God.

What did he do? A lot of drummers would just play a beat, play a groove from the verse to the chorus. They would play something on the high hat on the verse and in the chorus got to the ride cymbal. Neil played his instrument like he was playing a symphony or conducting a classical piece. He was so nuanced and creative. No drummer was playing like that. There are literally nuances in every fill, every groove. Drummers around the world studied that. There's probably no greater air drumming influence than Neil; Every time you'd go to a Rush concert, every drummer knew the fills and was doing them along with him.

To me the benchmark was always 'La Villa Strangiato' from Hemispheres. When I heard that, that was a benchmark of musicianship. That was the greatest challenge to fellow drummers, was 'Can you play 'La Villa Strangiato?'' Learning a song like that was like running the decathlon in the Olympics. And even the most well-known songs and commercial songs, like maybe 'Tom Sawyer' or 'Spirit of Radio', even though you heard them a million times the nuances in the drumming and all the musicianship -- from all three of them -- is of such a high caliber. You weren't hearing players like that on commercial AOR FM radio.

And he was so much more than just a drummer. The fact he was the band's lyricist and wrote such intelligent, poetic lyrics was a huge influence, as well as the books he's written over the past 20 years or so. After the horrible tragedy of losing his first wife and daughter he wrote the Ghost Rider book, one of the most inspirational books I've ever read in my life. Tour after tour he would put out these books of his travels, about how he would get up and go hiking and go riding his motorcycle for eight hours before even arriving at a soundcheck. He was one of those people that was just so inspirational because he lived life to the fullest."

Check out the complete story here.

They've achieved 13 gold and 10 platinum records with record sales exceeding 25 million copies sold worldwide.

Known as "The American Band," the high-energy five-piece group GRAND FUNK RAILROAD includes original founding members Don Brewer (vocals and drums, writer and singer of the multi-million selling hit, "We're An American Band") and bassist Mel Schacher, "The God of Thunder." Joining Don and Mel are true "all-stars." Singer Max Carl is a rock veteran from 38 SPECIAL. Max penned and sang 38's biggest hit "Second Chance" and was co-founder of California's legendary JACK MACK AND THE HEART ATTACK. Don refers to Max as "the best blue-eyed soul singer on the planet." Lead guitarist Bruce Kulick is best known for his 12 years with KISS and has credits with Michael Bolton, Meat Loaf and Billy Squier. The fact that GRAND FUNK's legacy still reigns over the classic rock landscape 50 years after is a testament to the group's influence and staying power. Mega-hits "We're An American Band", "I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home", "Locomotion" and "Some Kind Of Wonderful" still receive continuous airplay on classic rock radio. "We're An American Band" has received notoriety in recent years being used in movie soundtracks and in television/radio advertising. The huge hit was featured in a General Motors national TV ad campaign and in Disney's animated feature film "The Country Bears". "We're An American Band" was featured in the Cuba Gooding Jr. film "Radio", and in the swash buckler "Sahara" starring Matthew McConaughey.

Internationally acclaimed GRAND FUNK has toured the world, selling out in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan and South America. A 1971 performance at New York's Shea Stadium sold out faster than THE BEATLES. The group's widespread appeal is also evident in its prestigious recording achievements. Over their career, GRAND FUNK has had 19 charted singles, 8 Top 40 hits and two Number One singles ("We're An American Band" and "Locomotion", both selling more than one million each). The group has now accumulated 13 gold and 10 platinum records with record sales exceeding 25 million copies sold worldwide. The most recent gold CD award was presented to the band for their greatest hits package "Grand Funk Railroad The Collectors Series".

The multi-talented band carries on the tradition of GRAND FUNK hits and creates a new chapter in the legacy of GRAND FUNK RAILROAD. GFR drew 25,000 people to their Molson Canal Series Concert outside Buffalo, 20,000 in Albany, New York, and 20,000 fans to downtown Orlando, Florida. EMI/Capitol (Universal Music) released a new GRAND FUNK "greatest hits" package that includes a bonus DVD of rare concert footage. GRAND FUNK RAILROAD's 2019 "50 Years Of Funk Tour" was a huge success and now, with the group's 2020 "Some Kind Of Wonderful Tour", seasoned GRAND FUNK lovers and contemporary rock fans discovering the group for the first time will be able to celebrate 50 years of funk with GRAND FUNK RAILROAD.

LINDEMANN Releases Three More Versions Of 'Ach So Gern' Video

LINDEMANN, the project featuring vocalist Till Lindemann of German industrial metallers RAMMSTEIN and Swedish producer and multi-instrumentalist Peter Tägtgren (HYPOCRISY, PAIN), has released three new music videos for the song "Ach So Gern". The track is taken from LINDEMANN's second album, "F & M", which arrived in November. The follow-up to 2015's "Skills In Pills" was once again produced and mixed by Tägtgren.

The three new clips — "Pain Version", "Clemens Wijers Version" and "Drago Baotić Version" — were made available just one day after the arrival of the "One-Shot Version" and one month after the release of the song's official video.

Zoran Bihac, who directed the "Ach So Gern" video, stated about the "One-Shot" vesion of the clip: "In order to create an authentic atmosphere and draw real reactions from Till, we decided to shoot the interrogation scene in a one-shot. It was complicated because I also wanted to have the wide shot at the end within the same take, so we decided to shoot it with a drone. While Till is performing and getting beaten, the rotors had to start up and the drone had to be released at the right time. Till, our cast and the camera team had to synchronize perfectly to the timing of the song or else it wouldn't work. In the end, we decided it was best for the music video to cut in some other nice scenes, but I always had the idea to show the one-shot in its raw form some day."

"Skills In Pills" reached gold status in Germany and was entirely in English. On this second opus, the rules have changed: German lyrics sung by Lindemann's unmistakable voice are set in an intense and unique musical composition.

The starting point of these new LINDEMANN songs was a collaboration between Lindemann and the Hamburg Thalia Theater in the context of a modern adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "Hänsel & Gretel", which addresses topics such as fear, hope, poverty, abundance, cannibalism or death.

Five songs from this critically acclaimed play have been supplemented with six brand new masterpieces to form the impressive new studio work from LINDEMANN.

Tägtgren told Australia's Heavy about "F & M": "We actually started it right after the first one. We started writing this theater piece ['Hänsel & Gretel'] that they wanted us to work on. They wanted us to do a couple of songs for this 'Hänsel & Gretel' thing that they were doing, but they wanted more bizarre shit. Till was already involved with it, so they asked us if we could write a couple of songs for it, so we did. We did, like, two songs, and then we just kept on writing after that. That is the second time in a row when we started out with a couple and ended up with twelve or fourteen songs… I don't know what the hell happens."

LINDEMANN will embark on a European tour in February.

The official visualizer video for the disc's latest single, "Sea Of Lies", can be seen below.

The lyrical content deals with very personal events that took place during 2019, when there was a lot of challenges around the band. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!"

"Dance With The Devil" was recorded at Little Creek Studio and produced once again by V.O. Pulver and German thrash titan Schmier (DESTRUCTION). BURNING WITCHES' first live performance with new singer Laura Guldemond took place in June 2019 at the Sweden Rock Festival in Sölvesborg, Sweden.

The vocalist of the Dutch symphonic metal band SHADOWRISE, Guldemond was recruited by BURNING WITCHES following the departure of Seraina Telli.

In a statement, Seraina said that she was leaving BURNING WITCHES "for personal reasons," vowing to "fully dedicate" herself to her band DEAD VENUS.

Formed in 2015, BURNING WITCHES has released two full-length studio albums, 2017's "Burning Witches" and 2018's "Hexenhammer".

THEMATIC - American Prog Rock Quartet Premiers "Silence In Thought" Music Video

American prog rock quartet, Thematic, will release their new album, Skyrunner, on January 31. Today, the band the share the video for the track "Silence In Thought" from the upcoming album.

Says the band: "'Silence In Thought' is an integral piece to our album, Skyrunner. It conveys a premonition from a supporting character in the story who envisions nothing but death awaiting our protagonist. However, she hesitates to speak of this knowing she carries his child and does not want to burden his journey he must set forth. While writing this song, we wanted to embody many emotions like vulnerability, isolation, fear, disarray; but also hope and joy, with sentiments of longing. The introduction is whimsical like a dance between the characters conscious states which quickly unravels, as fear of loss sets in. This song is ever evolving from start to finish with little repetition of themes and atypical structure. This comes to a powerful and explosive conclusion that acknowledges what awaits our protagonist's fate."

Watch the video below.

Skyrunner is a concept album that tells of a hero’s quest to honour a promise. It is a tale of an epic journey through the fall from grace, the battle for redemption and the ultimate glory and tragedy of salvation. It is a story of honour and valour, of a tormented soul and his quest to restore the light of hope and love to a world and soul consumed by darkness. It is a story of a promise kept.

The band commented on the new release: "We have spent the last two years working on this concept album and we can't tell you how excited we are to finally release Skyrunner... It was a great pleasure to work with Forrester Savell on the production of the album as his ear for mixing was the right fit for our sound which blends Progressive Rock and Metal influences. The album is an epic telling of a hero's journey with narrative concepts and perspectives from the characters within the story. Skyrunner is a new chapter for Thematic and we look forward to taking this epic story out live to audiences in 2020!"

Skyrunner was self-engineered by Thematic and mixed and mastered by award-winning producer, Forrester Savell (Karnivool, Animals as Leaders, Twelve Foot Ninja, I am Giant). Pre-order the album here.

BAD WOLVES Debut "Sober" Music Video

Bad Wolves have released the official video for the hit track, “Sober”, from their sophomore album, N.A.T.I.O.N, out now, via Better Noise Music.

The release of “Sober” defined the direction of not just the band as a whole, but of vocalist Tommy Vext himself. The song’s powerful, somber melodic undertones set the stage for Vext’s story of ruinous romantic and family relationships, steeped in addiction and self-desecration, that finds recovery possible for those who can stay the course.

"This song was a unique opportunity to talk about addiction not only from the perspective of the addict but also from the perspective of their loved ones,” says Vext. “The message is very different from traditional songs that seem to always perpetuate a mentality of self-victimization which is exactly the kind of misguided thinking that perpetuates the mental obsessive side of alcoholism & addiction. In the end the moral of the story is about holding on to not giving up on ourselves or the people who are trying - who are really, really trying to make and better themselves.”

Bad Wolves came to Vext as an opportunity to try his craft again after his stint in Divine Heresy was brought down by his own demons and addictions, a childhood family life to the extent that most nightmares never reach, and an adult existence that took him even deeper into that hell.

Yet, it was a call from another addict, a kid looking for help, that brought Vext off the suicidal edge, literally, and into a life of service in recovery. Vext declared in an August 2018 interview for Psychology Today, titled Tommy Vext and the Deafening Sound of Self-Termination: “Because when we are in that state of self-termination it’s so deafening–the only way to break out of it is to have contact with people who literally have it worse and are still hopeful. And that’s the most powerful thing about altruism. It’s the foundation of my recovery and it’s the fabric of everything I do. I think we’re all here for a reason, and we’re all here for a purpose. Some of us have to find our purpose, and sometimes it’s thrust upon us. . . Such is life.”

“Sober” will be the next track off of Bad Wolves’ sophomore album N.A.T.I.O.N, that goes to radio. Their current single, “Killing Me Slowly” is presently at #2 at rock radio and well on its way to becoming the band’s fourth consecutive chart topping single - with tracks “Zombie,” “Hear Me Now” feat Diamante and “Remember When” from their previous album, Disobey, also reaching #1.

Bad Wolves will join Five Finger Death Punch, with special guests Megadeth, for their winter European tour, from January 22 in Stockholm, Sweden, through Thursday, February 20 in Budapest, Hungary.
