SODOM Drummer STEFAN 'HUSKY' HÜSKENS Exits Band

Drummer drummer Stefan "Husky" Hüskens has announced his departure from German thrash metal veterans SODOM.

Hüskens said in a statement: "Unfortunately, I have to tell you that I have to leave SODOM. Due to some changes at my full-time job, as well as a few other matters, I do not see any chance of continuing to crush the skins for SODOM in the future. I had a great time, I am proud of what we have achieved and I thank Onkel Tom Angelripper, Yorck Segatz and Frank Blackfire, and the entire crew for many extremely awesome moments. It was an honour to be part of one of my two all-time fave bands during the last two years. There are always important decisions in life and this is one of them! Thanks for everything ...!"

SODOM said in separate statement: "We sincerely regret his decision, but we respect the inducing circumstances. Sometimes even we have to admit that musical achievements are not everything in life. Against all odds of the modern music business, this music will forever enrich our lives. That has always been his motto.

"We are looking back at two successful and crucial years, which have not only added to the history of our band, but will also shape it for years to come.

"We wish him all the best for his musical, professional and private endeavours. He will of course remain a loyal colleague and trusted friend, backing us in word and deed with his musical expertise and vast knowledge of the metal scene.

"Glückauf, dear Husky, as we use to say in the Ruhr Area!"

This past November, SODOM released a new EP, "Out Of The Frontline Trench", via SPV/Steamhammer. The effort contained three brand new tracks as well as new recordings (studio and live) of two SODOM classics.

Joining frontman Thomas "Angelripper" Such on the EP were guitarists Frank "Blackfire" Gosdzik (also formerly of KREATOR, ASSASSIN) and Yorck Segatz (BEYONDITION) plus Hüskens (ASPHYX, DESASTER).

Blackfire previously played with SODOM on the seminal albums "Persecution Mania", "Mortal Way Of Live" and "Agent Orange".

Former SODOM guitarist Bernd "Bernemann" Kost and drummer Markus "Makka" Freiwald released a joint statement in January 2018 claiming that they were fired from the band by Tom via messaging platform WhatsApp even before Tom had a chance to hear any of the material the duo had been working on for the group's next album.

ROBERT PLANT Talks Solo Hit "Tall Cool One" - "We Took Lots Of Different Bits Of LED ZEPPELIN; I Thought It Was Slightly Comical"

Classic Rock recently caught up with Robert Plant to discuss the legendary singer's Digging Deep podcast, life after Led Zeppelin, and his solo career. Following is an excerpt from the interview.

Classic Rock: 1988’s "Tall Cool One" samples Led Zep and features Jimmy Page on guitar. Had you started to make peace with your past by then?

Robert Plant: "The Beastie Boys had started sampling Zeppelin (on "She’s Crafty", which samples "The Ocean"). I thought: 'That’s a great idea. Listen to that.' Because you can take it out of context and bring it into another zone, which is exactly what we did with 'Tall Cool One'. We took lots of different bits of Zeppelin. I thought it was slightly comical as well. Even the title, 'Tall Cool One', was an instrumental by The Wailers out of Seattle in 1959. So there was nothing new there, it was just a kind of visit. But coming to terms with the past, no no no. I mean, which past shall I go to?

Classic Rock: But in the podcast you stress how mindful you were of not turning into that Led Zep parody guy.

Robert Plant: "Yeah, but no matter what happens, I have no choice. There have been great variants of another me, but whenever I read a newspaper it seems I’m still in Led Zep. I think the problem is that nobody can hear what artists who stick around are able to put out now. If you don’t go out and find it by your own volition, it’s not going to come down the normal channels. And I think a lot of people who go to gigs don’t even listen to the radio. So do you go to Spotify and see it there: 'Robert Plant has made a new record, has he? Fancy that!'"

Read the complete interview here.

The latest episode of Robert Plant's Digging Deep podcast (Series 2, Episode #6) is available for streaming below.

You’re probably familiar with the idea of musicians (especially Robert) describing their career as a journey, but sometimes songs go on travels themselves. Since being recorded for Robert’s second solo album, 1983’s The Principle of Moments, this track ("Big Log") has surfaced on soundtracks, compilations and computer games, and even though the sound and production is a million miles away from his recent work, it’s become something of a favourite for many, many people…

BLACK SWAN Feat. JEFF PILSON, ROBIN MCAULEY, REB BEACH And MATT STARR: Listen To 'Big Disaster' Song

Vocalist Robin McAuley (MCAULEY SCHENKER GROUP), guitarist Reb Beach (WINGER, WHITESNAKE), bassist Jeff Pilson (FOREIGNER, THE END MACHINE, ex-DOKKEN), and drummer Matt Starr (ACE FREHLEY, MR. BIG) have joined forces in BLACK SWAN, a new band project signed to Frontiers Music Srl. Their debut album, "Shake The World", is a delightful romp of powerful hard rock that is not simply the sum of its parts, but a powerful rock and roll machine. It will be released on February 14 on CD, LP and digital formats. Watch the first single and video, for the title track, below.

The second single from "Shake The World", a track called "Big Disaster", can be streamed below.

The genesis of BLACK SWAN was sparked by a conversation between Pilson and Frontiers president and head of A&R, Serafino Perugino, who wanted a project that would not only showcase McAuley's vocal prowess, but have a mighty musical backbone to stand skyscraper tall behind him. Thus, the initial seeds were planted and Pilson ran with it from there. "Shake The World" was tracked at Pilson's home studio in Los Angeles and is a showcase of both the musical talents of the instrumental players in the band as well as McAuley's powerful voice. The four members got BLACK SWAN off the ground by exchanging ideas back and forth and then bringing all the songs together. The final result is something fresh, very heavy, but still intensely melodic and it's certainly not DOKKEN, nor WINGER, nor MSG, or some combination thereof, but its own unique animal. As an example, one of the songs was written by Pilson right after seeing the QUEEN movie "Bohemian Rhapsody". "I came home and I sat down at the grand piano and pretty much wrote exactly the chorus that we have, just coming straight [from] the movie. It is a bit QUEEN-like."

Continues Pilson, "It's amazing, incredible music. Wait until you hear everybody's playing and singing. It's beyond — way beyond."

Adds McAuley, "This is really exciting for me to read: BLACK SWAN announces the release of 'Shake The World', the first offering from the band on the Frontiers label.' I've known Jeff for some thirty years and we have a history of performing together on MSG 'Unplugged', in addition to being great friends, musically and socially. When he asked me to do this and collaborate with Reb, I didn't have to think too long with my response. Initially he wasn't going to play bass on this, but Reb and myself soon changed his mind, lol!!! Bringing Matt into the mix was a great decision. His powerful energy and style is unmistakable on this album. Overall, it is a very powerful blend of styles and writing. Reb is truly an amazing guitarist and songwriter. Jeff captured my vocals the way I like to sound. Probably the best vocal sound I've had... ever!!!! Such a great and creative studio experience for me. This is kick-ass, powerful music on an album full of great songs. If you love strong melodies and BIG choruses, BLACK SWAN won't disappoint!! It's time… 'SHAKE THE WORLD'!!!"

Beach says: "When Jeff approached me to do this, I was so excited because I loved writing 'Erase The Slate' with him for DOKKEN. I also played in the band with Jeff for four years, and we worked so well together, writing and live too. He is as good as it gets when it comes to a rock musician, a great songwriter and an absolute joy to work with. I came in with riffs, Jeff arranged them into a song by adding his own parts, and then Robin wrote the lyrics, and knocked it out of the park with the vocals. I am pretty particular about singers, and Robin's voice is so slammin' that I wouldn't want anyone else. Matt came in with his huge drum sound, and we had a great sounding band. Very exciting stuff!!"

"Shake the World" track listing:

06. She's On To Us

07. The Rock That Rolled Away

ARMORED SAINT Resumes Recording New Album

ARMORED SAINT has resumed recording its new album for a tentative late 2020 release via Metal Blade Records. Jeff Duncan has begun laying down guitar tracks with veteran producer/engineer Bill Metoyer and bassist/producer Joey Vera at the helm.

Last month, ARMORED SAINT drummer Gonzo Sandoval revealed that he recorded his parts for 11 songs over a six-day period at Eldorado Recording Studio in Burbank, California with Vera and engineer Josh Newell.

In 2018, singer John Bush told the 96.7 KCAL-FM radio show "Wired In The Empire" that the band had "some songs" already written for the follow-up to 2015's "Win Hands Down". "We don't want to wait too long before we put out a record, but on the same token, we thought 'Win Hands Down' is an amazing record and we're going to be hard-press to surpass it," he said. "ARMORED SAINT, it's kind of the way our career has gone. The way I see it, it's all about the quality, not the quantity, and I say that because I have to say that. It's true. I'd rather have 25, 30 years when we're all dead and gone and people look back on us and go, 'That was a cool band and they made some really cool records.' It's not like 'They made 20 records and maybe five of them were good and there's 15 bombs.' I don't want people to feel that way about ARMORED SAINT. I say that because we kind of have to do that because it's what our career has turned into. It would be cool to get out a record in less than five years. We went from 'Revelations' in 2000, to 'La Raza' in 2010. Granted, I was in ANTHRAX during that time. 'Win Hands Down' we cut in half and put it out in five. The tunes so far sound killer."

"Win Hands Down" was released in June 2015 via Metal Blade Records.

In the summer of 2018, ARMORED SAINT completed a North American tour commemorating the band's classic "Symbol Of Salvation" album. On this special run, the group performed "Symbol Of Salvation" in its entirety, with select shows recorded for a live DVD.

Video Premiere: BEHEMOTH's 'Rom 5:8'

On January 24, Polish extreme metallers BEHEMOTH will release the "I Loved You At Your Darkest Tour Edition" featuring the "I Loved You At Your Darkest" album with brand new, alternate artwork by Nicola Samori, plus an exclusive BBC Radio 1 session and previously unreleased documentary, "Thou Darkest Art", taken from the band's career-affirming 2018 art gallery exhibition in London.

To promote "I Loved You At Your Darkest Tour Edition", BEHEMOTH has just released the official music video for the song "Rom 5:8". Check it out below.

"I Loved You At Your Darkest" marked a milestone in the history of BEHEMOTH, being not only the most successful album of the band but also an audiovisual masterpiece: From its detailed blasphemous artwork to the highly vicious and at the same time deeply emotional tracks, BEHEMOTH once again played with fire. Now, the album comes to new life as a tour edition.

Unlike 2014's "The Satanist", which was primarily recorded in one studio, "I Loved You At Your Darkest" saw its production spread across Poland and the United States. It was produced by the bandmembers themselves, with drum co-production by Daniel Bergstrand (MESHUGGAH, IN FLAMES), mixing by Matt Hyde (SLAYER, CHILDREN OF BODOM) and mastering by Tom Baker (NINE INCH NAILS, MARILYN MANSON). Which is to say nothing of the 17-piece Polish orchestra arranged by Jan Stoklosa and engineered by Tomasz Budkiewicz.

BEHEMOTH frontman Adam "Nergal" Darski told Metalshop TV about the "I Loved You At Your Darkest" album title: "It's very complex, but let's put it this way. This is the eleventh BEHEMOTH album, and due to the fact that Christianity is… One of the biggest dogmas is Ten Commandments. In Christian symbolism and numerology, the number 11 stands for something transgressive and very sacrilegious and very blaspehemous, because it's 11. Because there's 10 commandments, 10 is a number that is completed. So 11 means that it's something that just imbalances the perfection of Christianity. So I [went], 'Okay, if it's our eleventh album, I should go to the source of all evil in the world' — I'm talking about the Bible itself — steal one of its quotes and just turn it upside down and twist it around… I really wanted to have a different title and not repeating the formula that we've repeated for so many albums, that would just end up with very strong one-word statements, like 'The Satanist', 'Evangelion', 'Demigod' and so on. So I just thought it would be good to use the full verse, full sentence. Yeah, I think it's cool."

BEHEMOTH's European tour with SLIPKNOT will kick off in Dublin on January 14.

DAVE MUSTAINE Says DIRK VERBEUREN's Drumming On MEGADETH's New Album Is 'Exceptional'

Dave Mustaine has praised Dirk Verbeuren's drumming on MEGADETH's new album.

Earlier today, the MEGADETH leader took to his Twitter to wish the Belgian-born-and-now-Los-Angeles-based drummer a happy 44th birthday. He wrote: "Happy birthday to my drummer extraordinaire, Dirk Verbeuren! You are a powerhouse and your drumming on the new record is exceptional. Have a great day, buddy!"

Verbeuren had been playing with SOILWORK for more than a decade before being recommended for the MEGADETH gig in 2016 by LAMB OF GOD's Chris Adler, who called Dirk "probably [one of the] top three drummers in the world."

MEGADETH's upcoming album will be the follow-up to 2016's "Dystopia", which earned a 2017 Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance" for the LP's title track. The sessions for the new disc are taking place in Franklin, Tennessee with co-producer Chris Rakestraw, who previously worked on "Dystopia".

Dave told "Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon" back in June 2018 that some of the new MEGADETH music is turning out to be more extreme than anything the band has done in the past. "The stuff that Dirk's been playing along to it is scary," he said. "We've never had any of those blast-beat kind of things on our music before, and some of the drumming on this is so mind-blowing. It's making me a better guitar player again, which I love. But I never thought we were gonna be playing this fast or this aggressive again."

In interview with the KATT Rock 100.5 FM radio station, Mustaine described Dirk as "is one of the most pleasant, easy-to-get-along-with guys I've ever met in my life. I'll walk up to him and he'll smile and lean forward and pat me on the back. He goes [adopts thin accent], 'How's it going, buddy?' I could say, 'Oh, man…'… anything. 'Oh, okay, buddy.' [He] smiles and pats me, 'cause he's just a happy guy. I've never, ever, ever seen him not smile."

"Dystopia" was MEGADETH's first album with Brazilian guitarist Kiko Loureiro, who was previously best known for his work with ANGRA.

MEGADETH spent most of 2019 off the road while Mustaine received treatment for the throat cancer with which he was diagnosed last May.

The band's tour with FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH and BAD WOLVES will visit 14 European countries starting on January 20 at the Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland and ending on February 20 at the Budapest Sportarena in Budapest, Hungary.

OZZY And SHARON OSBOURNE Are Looking For Their 'Dream Home'

During her daytime TV talk show "The Talk" a couple of days ago, Sharon Osbourne shared her vision board for 2020 and revealed a big move.

"Ozzy and I are looking for our dream home," she said. "We're looking for a ranch. We're looking where we can have more animals — desperately."

Sharon also shared plans for an upcoming biopic. "I want to produce a movie on my husband," she said.

Last summer, Sharon told Variety that a script was being written for a film that will focus on her relationship with Ozzy and not be the typical rock and roll movie of excess.

She said at the time: "It's definitely going to be a tearjerker. It's not going to be a sex-and-drugs movie at all. Ozzy is so much more than that. I would hate to be a cliché."

A few months later, Sharon told Celebrity Access that project was very close to becoming a reality. "We've got a deal and we are working with a writer right now, Ozzy and I," she said.

Asked how she managed to keep Ozzy in the public eye for so many years, Sharon replied: "Listen, Ozzy has been playing for 51 years now, and he's been always touring. It is what Ozzy does. There is only one Ozzy. There's only one person who looks like him and sounds like him. That voice is instantly identifiable. And that's it. He's unique. And he's one of the few guys who has ever left a successful band and has gone on to do just as successfully on his own. Even Mick Jagger couldn't do it."

Ozzy's new solo album, "Ordinary Man", will arrive on February 21 via Epic Records.

DAVID LEE ROTH: EDDIE VAN HALEN 'Is Not Doing Well'

David Lee Roth has told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that he decided resume his solo career with the launch of a Las Vegas residency in part because VAN HALEN's future remains under a cloud of uncertainty.

"Ed's [Van Halen] not doing well, and singing and dancing is a perishable skill," the VAN HALEN singer said. "If you have the capacity, it's something that has to be used routinely, if not for the thrill of it and the magic of creating with other incandescent spirits."

There have been a lot of rumors regarding the VAN HALEN guitarist's supposedly worsening health, with TMZ reporting recently that Van Halen has been traveling between the U.S. and Germany for cancer treatment going on several years now. The site later said that "the sad medical news had some folks thinking Eddie was on his death bed ... but we're told that's anything but the case."

Back in September, Roth said that there were no plans for VAN HALEN to do anything for the foreseeable future. "I think VAN HALEN's finished and this is the next phase," he said, referring to his solo project. "And that being said, Eddie's got his own story to tell. Not mine to tell it."

This past October, Eddie stopped by a McLaren dealership in Beverly Hills and mingled with the sales team, taking pictures and even giving one fan a kiss. A few days later, he was photographed at a spinal neurosurgeon's office in Beverly Hills.

A rep for Van Halen had no comment on TMZ's initial report when reached by Fox News.

Early last year, rumors were rampant that the classic-era lineup of VAN HALEN would reunite for the first time since 1984. It's unclear why the tour didn't happen, though there has been online chatter that a health setback involving Eddie Van Halen might have been responsible.

Last November, TMZ reported that Eddie spent several days in a hospital due to complications from his cancer treatment. Sources close to the legendary guitarist told the site he was admitted to the hospital with intestinal issues and abdominal pain, both the result of a bad reaction to the drugs Eddie was reportedly taking to battle throat cancer.

LINDEMANN Releases 'One-Shot' Music Video For 'Ach So Gern'

LINDEMANN, the project featuring vocalist Till Lindemann of German industrial metallers RAMMSTEIN and Swedish producer and multi-instrumentalist Peter Tägtgren (HYPOCRISY, PAIN), has released a "one-shot" music video for the song "Ach So Gern". The track is taken from LINDEMANN's second album, "F & M", which arrived in November. The follow-up to 2015's "Skills In Pills" was once again produced and mixed by Tägtgren.

Zoran Bihac, who directed the "Ach So Gern" video, explained in a statement: "In order to create an authentic atmosphere and draw real reactions from Till, we decided to shoot the interrogation scene in a one-shot. It was complicated because I also wanted to have the wide shot at the end within the same take, so we decided to shoot it with a drone. While Till is performing and getting beaten, the rotors had to start up and the drone had to be released at the right time. Till, our cast and the camera team had to synchronize perfectly to the timing of the song or else it wouldn't work. In the end, we decided it was best for the music video to cut in some other nice scenes, but I always had the idea to show the one-shot in its raw form some day."

"Skills In Pills" reached gold status in Germany and was entirely in English. On this second opus, the rules have changed: German lyrics sung by Lindemann's unmistakable voice are set in an intense and unique musical composition.

The starting point of these new LINDEMANN songs was a collaboration between Lindemann and the Hamburg Thalia Theater in the context of a modern adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "Hänsel & Gretel", which addresses topics such as fear, hope, poverty, abundance, cannibalism or death.

Five songs from this critically acclaimed play have been supplemented with six brand new masterpieces to form the impressive new studio work from LINDEMANN.

Tägtgren told Australia's Heavy about "F & M": "We actually started it right after the first one. We started writing this theater piece ['Hänsel & Gretel'] that they wanted us to work on. They wanted us to do a couple of songs for this 'Hänsel & Gretel' thing that they were doing, but they wanted more bizarre shit. Till was already involved with it, so they asked us if we could write a couple of songs for it, so we did. We did, like, two songs, and then we just kept on writing after that. That is the second time in a row when we started out with a couple and ended up with twelve or fourteen songs… I don't know what the hell happens."

LINDEMANN will embark on a European tour in February.

Although the fires are believed to have started naturally, experts think human-caused climate disruption has exacerbated hot, arid conditions that fuel the growth of such blazes.

Since Australia is only just entering its summer season, with temperatures peaking in January and February, the fires in the country could last for months.

METALLICA was scheduled to tour Australia last fall, but the shows were canceled after frontman James Hetfield was admitted to rehab.

Other musicians who have donated money to bushfire relief include Elton John, who has pledged $1 million, and Kylie Minogue, who has pledged $500,000.

KINGS OF DUST Feat. Ex-BADLANDS Bassist GREG CHAISSON: 'Like An Ocean' Lyric Video

The official lyric video for the song "Like An Ocean" from Phoenix-based retro rockers KINGS OF DUST can be seen below. The track is taken from the band's self-titled debut album, which will be released on March 13 via Shock Records/Vanity Music Group.

KINGS OF DUST is comprised of BADLANDS bassist Greg Chaisson, onetime RED DRAGON CARTEL frontman Michael Thomas Beck, lead guitarist Ryan McKay from the CRASH STREET KIDS and drummer Jimi Taft from local legends SURGICAL STEEL. The bandmembers find themselves rooted in mid-'70s-era classic rock, recalling the likes of DEEP PURPLE, HUMBLE PIE, BAD COMPANY and LED ZEPPELIN.

Chaisson states about the band's approach: "There are some really great bands out there right now with that '70s-style sound. But KINGS OF DUST is first-generation stuff. We were all there when it was a 'sound' the first time around, so I think it's very authentic, seeing as this is what we grew up listening to."

Recorded throughout the spring and summer of 2019 and mixed this fall at SoundVision Recording in Mesa in Mesa, Arizona, "Kings Of Dust" was produced by Chaisson and mixed by Beck and mastered by by Brad Vance (RAINBOW, GRAHAM BONNET) at Red Mastering.

The album isn't your run-of-the-mill collection of three-chord-based love songs and standing-up-to-the man-type anthems. Beck says: "The song subjects vary from parents teaching their kids the rules of life to not letting your emotions get the best of you. Positive messages brought to life by a veteran group of musicians who don't abide by the three-chord rock theory."

BODY COUNT Taps EVANESCENCE, HATEBREED, POWER TRIP Members For 'Carnivore' Album

BODY COUNT, the metal band fronted by hip-hop legend, actor and director Ice-T, will release its new album, "Carnivore", on March 6 via Century Media.

Ice-T and his gang are as angry as ever on their seventh studio album, which coincides with their 30th anniversary as a band. "Carnivore", BODY COUNT's second album for Century Media, continues the path of its uncompromising and critically acclaimed predecessors, "Bloodlust" (2017) and "Manslaugther" (2014), in pairing Ice-T's impassioned and socio-critical lyrics with thick guitar riffs and nods to metal and hardcore greats like SLAYER, METALLICA, PANTERA, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. Bangers like "Thee Critical Beatdown", "The Hate Is Real" and the title track will please old-school BODY COUNT fans, while "Colors" is a killer metal version of Ice-T's 1988 hit single of the same name. With MOTÖRHEAD's classic "Ace Of Spades", BODY COUNT is again paying tribute to one of its major musical influences. "When I'm Gone" shows a new side of BODY COUNT and features guest vocals by Amy Lee (EVANESCENCE). Other guest musicians include Dave Lombardo (ex-SLAYER), Jamey Jasta (HATEBREED) and Riley Gale (POWER TRIP).

"Carnivore" will be available as a digipak CD, as gatefold LP+CD (including bonus track) and as limited 2CD box set (including three bonus tracks, the instrumental version of the album, a BODY COUNT beanie, a metallic pin and a poster featuring the fantastic cover artwork created by Zbigniew M. Bielak).

LYCHGATE Signs With Debemur Morti Productions; New Album Out In March

Debemur Morti Productions welcomes UK-based progressive black/doom metal outfit Lychgate to the label's roster for the release of the band's Also sprach Futura.

Lychgate's Also sprach Futura was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Greg Chandler of Esoteric at Priory Recording Studios (Esoteric, Fen), who also provides vocals to the album. The album's cover art painting, illustrations, design, and layout were handled by Khaos Diktator Design.

Also sprach Futura will see release on digipak CD and all digital platforms via Debemur Morti Productions on March 13th. Stand by for audio premieres and other updates to be posted in the weeks ahead.

The follow-up of their critically acclaimed The Contagion in Nine Steps album, Lychgate's Also sprach Futura is the latest work of dystopian singularity from a band engaged in an intense process of evolution and refinement since their eponymous 2013 debut. Melding the swarming, stained-glass complexity of 20th Century classical, the phantasmagoric, intertwining riffage of progressive death metal, the heft and texture of funeral doom and the conceptual density of forward-thinking black metal into four of the most addictive, propulsive, and potent compositions the band has created to date.

Thematically, Also sprach Futura examines nightmarish, all-too-real concepts which include transhumanism, simulacra and simulation, post-humanity, the uncanny valley, Pygmalionism and the fictional machine Golem XIV, which exceeds human intelligence. The record is a sui generis juxtaposition of the transcendental and the guttural, myth and metropolis, the weird and the eerie, fin-de-siècle aestheticism and a startling vision of a deeper, darker future indeed...

“Progeny Of The Singularity”

OPEROSE Announce Oceans Of Starlight Album; Video Streaming

Operose are a symphonic progressive metal band from the United Kingdom, featuring the voice of rising opera sensation Jennifer Coleman. Their new album, Oceans Of Starlight, is due for release on February 7 via Lion Music.

The band describes the album:

“We really took the feedback from the first album on board and as such Oceans Of Starlight is a lot more commercial and in line with what is expected in the symphonic metal genre.  The debut possibly tried too hard to be different and it was therefore important to transform what was a classical/metal cross over concept into a fully-fledged symphonic outfit.  Experienced musicians were added to the line-up and production team and a lot of work went into writing new tracks.  The end product is heavier with a lot more symphonic elements and variety.  The whole album tells a story from start to finish and work also went into making sure there was space for the listener to take a breather rather than being bombarded with heavy track after heavy track.”

On the lyrical concept:

“One thing that did work well in the debut was the concept story, paying tribute to the opera theme of the band.  We therefore wanted to involve the fans and held a vote for them to decide what the lyrical concept should be for our new album.  It was a landslide victory for Cleopatra.  We then based the whole album on this and focused on the Battle of Actium and subsequent demise of Cleopatra.”

ASTHMA CASTLE Featuring Members Of PIG DESTROYER, MISERY INDEX, INTEGRITY Reveal “Mount Crushmore” Video

Stoner metal/sludge dealers Asthma Castle - featuring drummer Adam Jarvis (Pig Destroyer, Misery Index, Scour), guitarists Justin Ethem (touring rhythm guitarist for Integrity) and Cameron Smith (Passage Between, Crawler), vocalist Zach Westphal (ex-J. Roddy Walston And The Business), and bassist Jeff Davis - are pleased to unveil their new video for "Mount Crushmore." The tune comes by way of the full-length of the same name, released last March via Hellmistress Records.

The comical new clip was filmed by Chris Joao and Jeffrey Novosel from Iron Elephant Studio on historic Harford Road in Baltimore, Maryland and features the iconic Umberto's Hair Salon, where you go to get the "Total Look." Live footage was taken at Cafe Nola in Frederick, Maryland.

Notes the band, "The video includes a very special appearance by Steve the Barber. It's tough to pick out, but at one point, Adam is drinking beer out of a cowbell. Later, he's drinking while playing drums at the same time! Such talent! There are several hidden references to Baltimore, such as the mullet guy wearing a Kix sleeveless shirt standing outside of Umberto's as Zach struts by."

Mount Crushmore was recorded and mixed at Wrightway Studios (Dying Fetus, Misery Index), mastered by Scott Hull of Pig Destroyer at his own Visceral Sound Studios with cover art by Gary Ronaldson of Bite Radius Designs (Napalm Death, Kreator). Asthma Castle manifests a unique and seamless, riff-heavy blend of stoner metal/rock, heavy metal, prog, and sludge that takes its cues from the likes of Weedeater, Church Of Misery, Mastodon, Lowrider, Dozer, and Clutch without ever seeming derivative.

Former OBSCURA Guitarist CHRISTIAN MUENZNER Releases “Knight Rider” Playthrough Video

Guitarist Christian Muenzner (Eternity’s End, Alkaloid, ex-Obscura, ex-Necrophagist) has released a play-through video for "Knight Rider", a track from his third all instrumental solo album, Path Of The Hero.

The influences on the album range from neoclassical and heavy fusion to power and progressive metal. The song "Discovery" was co-written by Hannes Grossmann and contains a section that was originally intended for an Obscura song when Muenzner and Grossmann were still in the band. "Nocturne" is an arrangement based on Franz Liszt’s "Liebestraum No. 3". With nine tracks and a total playing time of only 35 minutes, this is the shortest of Muenzner’s three solo albums so far, purposely done to keep in the tradition of the late ‘80s Shrapnel Records albums. The album was co-produced and mixed and mastered by Hannes Grossmann.

In the video Christian is wearing a special glove, and as he explains, "Since 10 years I suffer from a neurological disorder called focal dystonia, which causes involuntary muscle contractions in my fretting hand. I am wearing this musician's practice glove as it helps a bit to reduce the symptoms of my left hand dystonia; because of the texture of the material the brain gets slightly different sensory information from the fingers, and the dystonic impulse is not triggered as heavily as without the glove. I only use it when I play really difficult stuff. It's a good tool, although the effect wears off over time."

Muenzner is a much in-demand guitar player for live shows, and starting January 30 he will be performing as second guitarist with Serious Black on their European tour with Hammerfall and Battle Beast. In addition, Christian has been recruited by vocalist Wade Black (ex-Crimson Glory/ex-Leatherwolf) to join his new band, the Wade Black Project. This summer the band will tour Europe and play all of the greatest songs from Wade's past, including Crimson Glory, Leatherwolf, and Seven Witches classics.

Path Of The Hero features Eternity’s End bandmates Jimmy Pitts (keyboards) and Hannes Grossmann (drums; Alkaloid, ex-Obscura, ex-Necrophagist ), as well as bassists Jerry Twyford and Linus Klausenitzer (Alkaloid, Obscura).

The album will be released in Japan and South Korea through King Records on March 11 and the rest of the world on March 20 through Muenzner’s own label, Shredquarter Records.

Tracklisting:

“Knight Rider”
“Demon Angel”
“Blades Of The Brotherhood”
“Deep Space #11”
“Nocturne”
“Discovery”
“Wing Commander”
“Marchers Of Vallahala”

THE WORD ALIVE To Release 'Monomania' Album In February

THE WORD ALIVE will release its new new album, "Monomania", on February 21 via Fearless Records. The disc was produced by Eric Ron (PANIC! AT THE DISCO, GODSMACK).

The official music video for the "Monomania" title track can be seen below.

"With 'Monomania', I wanted to capture the emotional roller coaster we go through as we continually kill our true selves battling the 'madness' we feel as we struggle with who we are, wondering at times if there's any point to all of this," says vocalist Telle Smith. "Sometimes, we're so desperate to be heard that we get lost attempting to fit in or to stand out. It's fucking hard learning what feels like hard lessons over and over. We fail to take ownership of our thoughts and actions, pulling us further away from facing who we are. You only really overcome that by trusting in yourself, because that's the only way you can break the cycle."

The Arizona-based band previously released the anthemic track "Burning Your World Down".

"When you listen to our new music, I hope you have a better understanding of our entire career," Smith says about the album as a whole. "Maybe you can see the whole story and realize that we're not different from you. We've been through it all, but we're always trying to learn, grow, and leave something behind we feel will help people. This is our purest work. This is everything we've been through in the last couple of years. It's the best conclusion of the last 10 years and the best opening to the next 10."

"Monomania" track listing:

01. Monomania

02. No Way Out

03. Searching For Glory

04. Another Year In The Shadows

05. Greatest Almost

06. Thank You

07. Numb Love (Misery II)

08. K.F.

09. Burning Your World Down

10. Comfort & Chaos

11. I'm Sorry You're Sorry Now

12. Death Is Only The End If You Assume The Story Is About You

Since emerging in 2009, THE WORD ALIVE's first decade comprised "Deceiver" (2010), "Life Cycles" (2012), "Real." (2014) and "Dark Matter" (2016), reaching a high watermark on "Violent Noise" in 2018. Bringing their total streams past 100 million, the latter included "Why Am I Like This?" (9.7 million Spotify streams) and "Red Clouds" (4.7 million Spotify streams).

RUSH Turned Down Offer To Play Las Vegas Residency

RUSH turned down an offer to play a Las Vegas residency, it has been revealed.

The information came to light via journalist John Katsilometes of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, who recalled a conversation that he had a few months ago with Bobby Reynolds, AEG Live's senior vice president in Las Vegas.

When Katsilometes told Reynolds that he was "still waiting for a RUSH residency," Bobby responded: "RUSH was my first concert. I put every kind of damn offer you can put in front of RUSH."

Revealing that the overture was made in late 2015 through early 2016, with plans to have the Canadian progressive rock band playing T-Mobile Arena maybe four or six weekends a year, Reynolds said: "Las Vegas would have been the only place you could see RUSH, and I think it would have been incredible. I know their popularity, and their fans are all over North America and Canada. You look at that opportunity now — we'll never know what it would have meant."

Vegas has been home to concert residencies from some of the biggest names in the music business, including such rock acts as AEROSMITH, DEF LEPPARD, MÖTLEY CRUE, GUNS N' ROSES, SCORPIONS, QUEEN + ADAM LAMBERT and JOURNEY.

RUSH's final show took place at the Forum in Los Angeles back on August 1, 2015.

Neil Peart died less than a week ago at age 67. The iconic RUSH drummer passed away in Santa Monica, California, on January 7 after battling brain cancer for three and a half years.

In announcing his passing, Peart's bandmates called him their "soul brother and band mate of 45 years." They also asked for privacy, urging those who want to express condolences to do so by donating to a cancer research group or charity.

Peart previously said that playing concerts at his age caused too much painful wear and tear on his body and he'd rather call it quits before the performances start declining in quality.

DREAM THEATER Holds Moment Of Silence In Memory Of NEIL PEART (Video)

DREAM THEATER paid tribute to Neil Peart during its concert last night (Saturday, January 11) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Singer James LaBrie led the audience at AFAS Live in a moment of silence as they stood quietly for 30 seconds "in memory" of the iconic RUSH drummer, whose death was announced the previous day and who was a huge inspiration for DREAM THEATER.

On Saturday, LaBrie and his bandmates took to their Twitter to express their condolences for Peart's passing, writing: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the loss of one of the world's greatest artists, lyricists and drummers of all time. To say that Neil and the music he was a part of was an influence on DREAM THEATER is a gross understatement."

Earlier in the year, DREAM THEATER guitarist John Petrucci spoke to Consequence Of Sound about the impact RUSH's music had on him as a young fan growing up in New York in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

"To me, [RUSH] was the band that changed everything," he said. "When I heard it, I just… I don't know what it is about people and music… When music just hits you in such a way, especially when you're young, you're influential and you're sort of developing your tastes, and that band, there was something about it. I just loved it. And so I just got completely sucked into all things RUSH."

He added: "One of my greatest musical memories has to do with them 'cause RUSH was the first concert I ever went to. Back in 1982, they were on the 'Signals' tour. They were playing the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. I went there and had the worst seats ever; they were so far away. But I just couldn't believe that this was the band that I was listening to all this time, and here I am in the same building as them. How is that possible? I was just blown away by the show and the production. And you can imagine what impact that had on me, eventually making that my career."

Former DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy, who co-founded the band with Petrucci nearly 35 years ago, told Ultimate Classic Rock that RUSH was one of his biggest inspirations.

"I can't possibly overstate how much influence RUSH had on me as a young teenager," he said. "I would say from about 1981 to 1987, they were my gods. Neil Peart was my god at that point, and was a huge, huge influence on my drumming… The size of the drum set, the way I approached the drums, the odd time signatures, the progressive-styled instrumental music — I mean, just everything about RUSH at that point, when I was a developing teenager, was huge. I've seen them on every tour since then."

DREAM THEATER's 14th studio album, "Distance Over Time", was released in February 2019.

PETER CRISS: NEIL PEART 'Was A Hero To All Of Us Drummers'

Original KISS drummer Peter Criss has paid tribute to RUSH's Neil Peart, who passed away on Tuesday (January 7) in Santa Monica, California after a three-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Criss took to his web site to write: "It is so devastating to say these words... I am so deeply saddened by the death of one of my brother drummers and dear friend. Neil was a hero to all of us drummers. He was a great man and a great musician. My heart goes out to Alex and Geddy for their loss and all the family, friends, and fans . May he rest in peace and be met by the lord in heaven. God Bless, Peter Criss"

Several years ago, Criss said the first time he heard Neil's drumming was when RUSH opened for KISS in the 1970s. "Their [original] drummer just left," Peter said. "It was [Neil's] first night, I believe. He was amazing — so inventive."

Peter added: "I love to watch Neil play. He is also a great songwriter. We just think he's one f'in great drummer!!!

"If you really want to see what the drums are about... just go see Neil play."

RUSH had been completely inactive since completing its "R40 Live" tour five years ago.

Neil's survivors include his wife Carrie and daughter Olivia.

He was also the author of numerous books, including a number of memoirs exploring his life and travels.

In 1997, Peart and his bandmates — guitarist Alex Lifeson and bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee — became the first rock musicians to be inducted into the Order of Canada.

They were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2013.

THIN LIZZY's SCOTT GORHAM: NEIL PEART Will 'Continue To Be An Inspiration For Many Aspiring Drummers'

THIN LIZZY guitarist Scott Gorham has paid tribute to RUSH drummer Neil Peart, who died on Tuesday (January 7) in Santa Monica, California after a three-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

"I was shocked & saddened to hear that Neil Peart, percussionist and lyricist extraordinaire with Canadian band RUSH has passed away," Scott wrote on social media earlier today (Saturday, January 11). "In the 70's THIN LIZZY was privileged to tour with RUSH in the States and I recall how blown away we were when we saw the band perform for the first time, especially Neil's drumming. We had so much fun in that tour, plus we learned so much from all the guys in the band."

He continued: "RUSH were only a three piece band, so Neil became a major part of the RUSH sound and feel. Neil never demanded respect, it was freely given by all of us in the music community and the fans.

"Rest well Neil, you will continue to be an inspiration for many aspiring drummers, setting a standard many will be measured by. An exceptional and highly regarded individual, who also overcame great personal tragedy, will be greatly missed by his band mates Geddy and Alex, his family, friends and fans around the world."

Peart joined RUSH in 1974. He was considered one of the best rock drummers of all time, alongside John Bonham of LED ZEPPELIN; Keith Moon of THE WHO; and Ginger Baker of CREAM. Peart was also RUSH's primary lyricist, drawing inspiration from everything from sci-fi to Ayn Rand.

THE POLICE drummer Stewart Copeland once called Peart "the most air-drummed-to drummer of all time."

STYX Drummer TODD SUCHERMAN On NEIL PEART: 'He Had His Own Voice On The Instrument'

STYX drummer Todd Sucherman has paid tribute to Neil Peart, who died on Tuesday (January 7) in Santa Monica, California after a three-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. The iconic RUSH drummer was 67 years old.

On Friday (January 10), Sucherman took to his social media to write: "I only met Neil Peart once, but it was a lovely meeting indeed. I had flown to LA to work on Brian Wilson's Gershwin record in December 2009 and while I was at the hotel the night before the sessions began, I received an email and photo from Jimmy Johnson (our long time guitar tech, and Neil's long time friend and RUSH crew member). Jimmy said, 'Neil just sent me this picture of his hockey drum kit. He's recording the Canadian Hockey Night Theme with it in LA tomorrow.'

"When I walked into Ocean Way Studios the next morning, Sabian cymbal artist rep, Chris Stankee, was in the lobby. I gave him a hug and asked him what he was doing there and he said was looking after Neil. He suggested we should say hi to him now as they were about to get to work in the studio next to the one where I would be working, so I dropped off my cymbals and grabbed a bagel (I was hungry) and off we went to the next studio over from Brian's. There was the hockey kit, the actual Stanley Cup, a full big band and an entire film crew. We shook hands and chatted, I congratulated him on his new young daughter, and as I remember — he was the one that was asking me all the questions. He wanted to know about working with Brian Wilson, what that was like, etc. We brought up many mutual friends (Lawrence Gowan, Jimmy Johnson) and as we were chatting, I noticed the whole room was ready and waiting for us (me) to stop talking so they could all get to work. I said to Neil, 'Well, looks like I should be on my way and let you all get to business!' Chris then snapped a photo of us (bagel still in hand) and off I went. He was incredibly warm, personable, curious, and felt we could have kept the conversation going had it not been for 30 people waiting to get to work.

"He had his own voice on the instrument but even more, he had his own literary voice. Lyrically unique, and he lived through such unimaginable tragedy and ultimately came out the other side to continue his life passionately.

"In particular '2112' through 'Signals' loomed large in my childhood. I learned every single note of 'Moving Pictures' when I was in 6th grade. That record still can catapult me back to those days. I was truly grateful to have a few quality minutes with the man. I wish there had been more.

"Every story I ever heard about the guys in RUSH, and I've heard a lot, all really portrays them as wonderful, exemplary human beings.

"My condolences to Neil's family, musical family, road family, and his friends. RIP."

I only met Neil Peart once, but it was a lovely meeting indeed. I had flown to LA to work on Brian Wilson's Gershwin...

SEBASTIAN BACH: NEIL PEART's 'Music Will Never Die In Our Hearts'

Former SKID ROW singer Sebastian Bach has paid tribute to Neil Peart, who died on Tuesday (January 7) in Santa Monica, California after a three-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. The iconic RUSH drummer was 67 years old.

Earlier today (Saturday, January 11), Bach posted a YouTube video of him celebrating Peart's life while listening to RUSH music and talking rock and roll at the Record Parlour in Hollywood, California. He wrote in an accompanying message: "I'll never understand how hard it hits us all when a hero dies. Even though I never really knew the person.

"I was fortunate enough to meet Neil Peart twice in my life and will treasure those memories forever.

"When I got the news yesterday that he was no longer with us, I put on 'Permanent Waves' and wept for about two hours straight. A physical response, not of my control. I did not know what to do with the rest of the day I was so sad. So I got in the car and went to the Record Parlour and we cranked RUSH all night long. The Record Parlour knows exactly what a record store should be. Turns out this was the absolute perfect place for me last night in my mourning of the greatest drummer the world will ever know. [I] was going to go get dinner after the record store but there was no need. [Owners] Chad and Chris ordered pizza into the store and we hung out for hours talking about rock and roll. Nowhere else I would have rather been last night. Thank you to all of you at the record Parlour for being so cool and getting me home safe.

"Neil Peart.... Thank you for making the impossible seem easy. Thank you Neil for showing us all the ultimate possibilities of what music can be. Thank you for being such an important part of all our lives. It truly feels like you were a member of the family. Your music will never die in our hearts."

In a 2005 interview, Bach stated about RUSH: "Their time signatures fascinated me. I couldn't understand the tempos of songs such as 'Cygnus-X1' and 'Hemispheres'. It was music like nothing else I had ever heard. But being a young Canadian whippersnapper, I was geographically programmed to worship RUSH like the rest of my fellow Canadians."

He continued: "I was the second ever member of the 'Rush Backstage Club of Toronto', the RUSH fan club put together by their longtime photographer, Andrew MacNaughton. Andrew was the cousin of my school roommate, George Jeffries at Lakefield College School in Canada. He was the first member of Andrew's 'club' which we joined in 1981."

Bach added: "RUSH was a magical sound to me and showed me that music could be challenging and entertaining at the same time... Few musicians on the planet can boast the longevity of RUSH, especially in a band context. Rock bands are a fragile organism and RUSH's career demonstrates that there are exceptions to the 'Behind The Music' scenario of 'band makes it big, band breaks up, band reunites for Japanese tour.' Their work ethic and constant reinvention is an inspiration to each and every musician."

STYX's LAWRENCE GOWAN Performs RUSH's 'Limelight' As Tribute To NEIL PEART (Video)

Lawrence Gowan performed RUSH's "Limelight" as a tribute to RUSH drummer Neil Peart during STYX's concert Friday night (January 10) at Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona. Fan-filmed video footage of his rendition can be seen below.

After the 90-second tribute, the Canadian-born Gowan told the audience: "Thank you to one of the greatest drummers and certainly one of the all-time greatest lyricists, Neil Peart."

STYX drummer Todd Sucherman shared video of Gowan's performance and added the following message: "'Limelight' was played by Lawrence Gowan before 'Come Sail Away' last night in the round at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix. I was off stage down a hallway listening to this beautiful tribute. From my vantage point I couldn't see Lawrence (as the stage was spinning). All I could see was my drum kit spinning alone in the center of the stage as this song played, and for me… it was a moment."

Peart passed away on Tuesday (January 7) in Santa Monica, California after a three-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

RUSH had been completely inactive since completing its "R40 Live" tour five years ago.

MIKE PORTNOY Shares His Memories Of NEIL PEART With Billboard - "He Was One Of Those People That Was Just So Inspirational Because He Lived Life To The Fullest"

Neil Peart, the drummer and lyricist for Canadian rock legends Rush, died on Tuesday, January 7th in Santa Monica, California at age 67, following a three-year battle with brain cancer. DrummerMike Portnoy (Sons Of Apollo, ex-Dream Theater) has checked in with the following message:

"My initial post earlier upon hearing of Neil’s passing that has been making the social media rounds was just a spontaneous writing... but honestly there’s so much more I want to say.

I’ve been replaying stories of times we spent together, reading some of his emails to me, looking at some of the personal pics he’s sent me through the years of him and his daughter growing up, etc., and of course, 40 years of his mammoth influence on me... all the Rush shows through the years, etc. I still don’t know if I can properly put all my thoughts down as frankly I’m still devastated and a bit paralyzed with shock (as I know MILLIONS of people around the world are...)

But before I was able to write today’s earlier initial post on social media, I was asked to call into Sirius XM Volume (along with Eddie Trunk) as well as briefly speak with Billboard, so here’s that chat with Billboard for a few further thoughts on the man who will always be my drumming hero."

Following is an excerpt from the Billboard story, published by Gary Graff.

Portnoy: "I discovered him and Rush when I was in high school, back in the beginning of the 80s. He had everything that I always dreamt of becoming. He was just a master of what he did; he played this mammoth drum kit and was the master of the odd time signatures and just had chops for days. At the time, no other progressive drummers were raising the bar to the level he did. I'd never seen or heard another drummer like him. He had the same kind of impact on the drum community that somebody like Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen had on the guitar community. Like tens of thousands of other young drummers at the time, I just became obsessed with him and everything about him.

That was around the Permanent Waves/Moving Pictures era. Once I got hooked, I worked my way backwards and became completely obsessed with all those albums, especially the progressive ones like Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings; I even used Pert shampoo! In my high school year book, my future plans were to become the next Neil Peart. He was my God.

What did he do? A lot of drummers would just play a beat, play a groove from the verse to the chorus. They would play something on the high hat on the verse and in the chorus got to the ride cymbal. Neil played his instrument like he was playing a symphony or conducting a classical piece. He was so nuanced and creative. No drummer was playing like that. There are literally nuances in every fill, every groove. Drummers around the world studied that. There's probably no greater air drumming influence than Neil; Every time you'd go to a Rush concert, every drummer knew the fills and was doing them along with him.

To me the benchmark was always 'La Villa Strangiato' from Hemispheres. When I heard that, that was a benchmark of musicianship. That was the greatest challenge to fellow drummers, was 'Can you play 'La Villa Strangiato?'' Learning a song like that was like running the decathlon in the Olympics. And even the most well-known songs and commercial songs, like maybe 'Tom Sawyer' or 'Spirit of Radio', even though you heard them a million times the nuances in the drumming and all the musicianship -- from all three of them -- is of such a high caliber. You weren't hearing players like that on commercial AOR FM radio.

And he was so much more than just a drummer. The fact he was the band's lyricist and wrote such intelligent, poetic lyrics was a huge influence, as well as the books he's written over the past 20 years or so. After the horrible tragedy of losing his first wife and daughter he wrote the Ghost Rider book, one of the most inspirational books I've ever read in my life. Tour after tour he would put out these books of his travels, about how he would get up and go hiking and go riding his motorcycle for eight hours before even arriving at a soundcheck. He was one of those people that was just so inspirational because he lived life to the fullest."
