Poets of the Fall

Music is an integral part of me

Prologue
Finnish rock phenomenon Poets of the Fall keeps winning more and more listeners’ hearts all over the world. Their brand new album “Clearview” (out on 30.09.2016) and the tour in its support open a new chapter in the band’s history. Being one of the most authentic and independent bands, Poets of the Fall manage to discover new directions staying extremely close to their fans at the same time without betraying themselves. These professionals of the highest level and really nice people share all their energy with the listeners at every live performance. The founding member, lead vocalist and songwriter of the band, Marko Saaresto, told us about the Clearview’s conception, theater, symbols and some other exciting things...
Poets of the Fall
Hi, Marko! Thanks for finding some time to answer my questions!

Hello! No problem. My pleasure.

It’s quite a long time since you have released your album “Clearview”. May you tell now whether it has met your expectations (reaction of the fans, your own feelings while performing it, etc.)?

Sure! We think the songs have been a real success and we'v

e really enjoyed playing them live for our fans.

“Clearview” has an extremely interesting concept. It looks like interlacement of adult’s and child’s notion of “a game”, doesn’t it?

While the concept of the album reaches for clarity and intuition, I also think that looking at life and its' vagaries from different perspectives is a really constructive. It's also a nice way to look

at how our perceptions develop and vary over time. One example of that can, as you pointed out, be the different notions of a child's and an adult’s points of view. It's something that can be interestingly interwoven in musical and lyric terms.

What does the term “game” mean for you?

I think given the right circumstances, anything can be viewed as a game. How does something, say

your life circumstances, look from that vantage point?

Marko, you’ve once said that your lyric hero is a ghost, but he changes from album to album. How did he change at this album?

That's an interesting question. Perhaps, that entity has shown its benevolent side a little. I think it is most present in “Moonlight Kissed”.

Do you feel that music influe

nced or even changed you personally somehow (besides your choice of profession, of course)?

Naturally, I think that music is an integral part of me, who I am and how I express myself. I think it influences and changes me over time somewhat, and vice versa, I change it. So it's a two way street really.

As for you personally, have your own musical preferences changed in recent years?
Poets of the Fall

Oh, sure, many times. I think the field of what I like has broadened, like your tastes would when you try out new recipes for food, for instance. Five years from now your tastes are probably different from what they are today. What I prefer at any given moment can vary from mood to mood, and that's wonderful.

Moving on to your gigs, they are theatrical in a certain way. Theater se

ems to be an integral part of band’s DNA, isn’t it? So, is it an idea of theater (hiding yourself behind the mask; strong emotions; bright colors; non-trivial images, etc.) or a process of creating “a show” itself, thinking out some symbols, for example, you like the most?

I agree. Our shows are a mix of theater, interaction, being present and being ourselves. I think for us those are an integral part of the job

description as a whole and also something that interests us. Which helps when you're in the performing business. The emphasis can differ between tours, shows and songs, depending on the music and probably even more, the text.

Talking about symbols, maybe you know that some of your fans are absolutely carried away by the searching of meaning in every single detail: they build theories, draw parallels.
Poets of the Fall
Perhaps, you heard many of such stories from the fans. After all these years, does it still surprise you?

No, it doesn't surprise. I think it's great. I think that way is possible for those who are inclined to get more out of the whole musical experience. Not to go to the excess though (laughing). It's not a conspiracy theory, but I do like the levels of hidden meanings, mysticism and parallels that can be built into music and lyrics alike.

Could you please reveal some details about what can we expect from the band in the nearest future?

Right now we are concentrating on the 2017 part of the Clearview tour. But it appears we are always brewing something new, so I'd advice everyone to stay tuned.

And traditionally, could you please wish something to your Russian fans?

Sure thing, I wish well-being for all our Russian fans and a bright spring and a warm summer to follow. And listen to your daily Poets of the Fall song.

Thank you very much for the interview! Hope to see you soon!

Thanks!
