According to The Pulse Of Radio, NINE INCH NAILS mastermind Trent Reznor took to the airwaves of Los Angeles radio station KROQ on Monday (June 24) to discuss the upcoming NIN album, "Hesitation Marks", the group's return and the recent departures of guitarist Adrian Belew and bassist Eric Avery from the lineup after just a few months. Reznor said about the latter, "It's been disruptive . . . you can spend a lot of time, like I've done, hypothesizing and imagining and projecting as to what it's going to be like with this chemistry and this recipe of people in a room playing music. And in reality, it rarely is that."

He added, "In the case of a couple people in the band, some switches were made and it's turned into something different . . . It's felt a wrench in the works at time, but at the same time it's made me rethink a lot of how we put this together and I think where we're ending up at a place that's much truer to where NINE INCH NAILS should be and better in the long run."

Asked why he kept the recording of "Hesitation Marks" a secret for a year, Reznor responded, "I still owe Interscope a greatest-hits record. There was talk about doing a couple new tracks for the compilation under the NIN header . . . I started tinkering with a couple songs for NINE INCH NAILS. I felt inspired by what's happening. A couple songs led to a couple more songs and pretty soon it was a full-fledged, 'let's make an album.'"

Reznor described "Hesitation Marks" as "much more electronic," although he added that the first single, "Came Back Haunted", is "familiar, it's very self-referential and purposely. I think that's the most like that there is on that record."

A video for "Came Back Haunted", directed by filmmaker David Lynch, could surface by the end of this week.

"Hesitation Marks", the first NIN album since 2008's "The Slip", will arrive on September 3. The album features guest appearances from FLEETWOOD MAC guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and THE WHO touring bassist Pino Palladino.

NINE INCH NAILS has confirmed a lengthy North American tour for the fall, beginning on September 28 in St. Paul, Minnesota. The band will make its live return on July 26 at the Fuji Rock festival in Japan.

"Ruthless", a brand new song from Californian metallers DEVILDRIVER, can be streamed using the SoundCloud widget below. The track comes off the band's sixth album, "Winter Kills", which will be released on August 27 via Napalm Records. The instrumental parts for the CD were recorded at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida while the vocals were laid down at singer Dez Fafara's home studio, with Mark Lewis (THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, WHITECHAPEL, ALL THAT REMAINS) handling production duties. The album's cover artwork features a photograph by Dean Karr. The layout was done by Ryan Clark of Invisible Creature.

This new record sounds a lot like the first three records. It's got an intense groove to it, and I'm really happy. The writing is going extremely well. That being said, I think we've laid back on our laurels right now and be like, 'We're a groove band.' The fans started calling us 'the groove machine, The California groove machine.' Everybody needs a title; we'll take that one and we're going to give them that on the new record, for sure."

DEVILDRIVER's fifth album, "Beast", sold a little over 11,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 42 on The Billboard 200 chart.

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich said in a new interview with Rolling Stone that the band has compiled nearly 600 song ideas for its tenth studio album, most of them coming during jam sessions on tour and organized this past January and March in several rehearsal sessions. But that doesn't mean the group is rushing to whittle all that music down to 10 or 12 solid tunes and record them. Ulrich explained, "I understand there are people waiting for a new record, and so are we. But I can't stress about it. It's not like, 'Fuck, hurry up and get this record out.' Hurry up for what? So we can go play gigs? We already play gigs. We'll get there."

Frontman James Hetfield told The Pulse Of Radio that making the new record was a question of time and not lack of material. "We've come up with enough material for a record, for sure," he said. "We've gone through maybe one-tenth of the material that's on our riff CDs, but we've got enough for an album. We just haven't had the time to really focus on it and dial in and start whittling at these masterpieces, hopefully."

METALLICA is not likely to get down to serious recording until later this year or early 2014, with the new album probably not expected to arrive until 2015. The band's last studio effort was 2008's "Death Magnetic".

Earlier this month the band headlined the second edition of its Orion Music + More festival, which was held in Detroit on June 8-9. The group headlined the second day while also playing a surprise afternoon set on the first day at which it played its entire 1983 debut disc "Kill 'Em All".

The group has a scattering of festival slots lined up into September, just before its upcoming 3D movie, "Metallica Through the Never", premieres on IMAX screen in North America on September 27.

METALLICA filmed the movie last August, combining live performance footage from three shows in Vancouver with a storyline following a fictional member of their crew, played by actor Dane DeHaan, who's sent on a mission during a concert.

German metallers BUT WE TRY IT will release their new album, A Twisted Sanctuary, on July 5th. The album was recorded at the end of 2012 under the direction of Dennis Koehne (SODOM, EXHUMER, THE VERY END).
After signing a new record deal with Firefield Records in March, the road is open for A Twisted Sanctuary. The song 'Iron Reign' was chosen to be the first video track. The video and making of footage are now available.

Poland's J.D. OVERDRIVE released their sophomore studio album, Fortune Favors The Brave, on May 24th in Europe via Metal Mind Productions. The album is out on July 2nd in North America, via MVD. Another video promoting the album, 'Shadow Of The Beast' is now available.

Vocalist Wojtek ‘Susel’ Kaluza, vocals comments: "This kind of concept suits ‘Shadow Of The Beast’ very well - it's a slow, rather dark song and old school horror flicks are a perfect theme for a video for a track like this. A similar concept was used not long ago by DEFTONES, except their theme was old western movies. We knew from the get go that horror films was the only option for us - the older and campier, the better (laughs). We had lots of fun gathering the material for this video, got to watch many forgotten classics (laughs)."
The mixing and mastering duties for the Fortune Favors The Brave album was held by Piotr Gruenpeter, who's best known for providing electronics, noise and production quality for the post-black phenomenon THAW, as well as from bands SEARCHING FOR CALM and SUN FOR MIILES.

AYREON mastermind Arjen Lucassen recently revealed that the title of the eagerly anticipated forthcoming new album will be The Theory Of Everything, and that it will be a double album.
Aiming for a tentative release at the end of this year, Arjen had this to say about the album's progress: "It's going to be a double album, so there is a lot to write! It's extra challenging as well, because lyrically I've left the old Ayreon universe behind and have to create a new one from scratch. I'm really excited about the line-up and how everything is PROGressing so far."

On September 3, 2013, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release "Live In Tokyo" by PORTNOY SHEEHAN MACALPINE SHERINIAN on DVD, Blu-ray, 2CD and digital audio and video formats.

"Live In Tokyo" was filmed/recorded on November 14, 2012 at Zepp Tokyo. This 95-minute concert is the first release of material from the PSMS supergroup, and it showcases a wide range of instrumental performances from each of the members' careers and collaborations (moved up from a later paragraph). In an interview with Prog Sphere, Portnoy stated about the new band, "It's a blast. I love Derek; he's a fun guy. I still stand by the fact that I'm not sure if he was ever right for DREAM THEATER. But, that doesn't mean I don't love the guy as a player and person. I really do — I love being with him and I love playing with him and I'm glad to be able to work with him again. And, you know, it's a cool project because obviously it's very much… I think of everything I'm doing it's the most like DREAM THEATER or it's more even like LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT, probably. But you know, it's just me being able to play that kind of music with some amazing musicians. Not only Derek, but, obviously, Billy Sheehan's a dear friend and I've got two different things going with Billy at the moment, and I love working with him; he's one of my favorite bass players of all time. And Tony MacAlpine is an amazing guitar player, so I'm honored to be playing with him as well."

Portnoy formed the lineup to perfom at two drum events at the NAMM show in January 2012. Due to overwhelming response, that band has decided to take their show on the road.

WARMEN, the brainchild of CHILDREN OF BODOM keyboardist Janne Wirman, has finished mastering the follow-up for the band's critically acclaimed 2009 studio album "Japanese Hospitality". A late 2013 release is expected.

WARMEN celebrated its 10-year anniversary with a concert during the Helsinki Metal Meeting weekend in February 2010 at Dante's Highlight in Helsinki, Finland. The band's third live performance ever included guest appearances by Alexi Laiho (CHILDREN OF BODOM) on a cover version of ROCKWELL's "Somebody's Watching Me", Timo Kotipelto (STRATOVARIUS), Finnish pop/rock queen Jonna Kosonen (JONNA'S PROBLEM) and Pasi Rantanen (ex-THUNDERSTONE).

Spinefarm Records released a WARMEN compilation album entitled "The Evil That Warmen Do" on January 27, 2010.

WARMEN's fourth album, "Japanese Hospitality", entered the Finnish chart at position No. 36. The 10-song effort includes two cover versions — "Separate Ways", originally recorded by JOURNEY, and "Black Cat" by JANET JACKSON, featuring a guest appearance by Jonna Kosonen. Other guest musicians that appear on the CD include Laiho, Rantanen, Kotipelto and Marko Vaara.

Finnish "battle metal" warriors TURISAS will release their new album, "Turisas2013", on August 26 in Europe and on September 3 in North America. The CD was once again produced by vocalist Mathias Nygård and the majority of the album was recorded by Nygård and guitarist Jussi Wickström in a remote house outside of Helsinki that served as the "Turisas2013" command center and headquarters. Additional recordings were done in three other studios: the drums at Atomic Spa Studio and orchestral recordings at 5 by 5 Studio, both in Helsinki. A lot of vocals and numerous additional acoustic elements were laid down at Sound Supreme Studio in Hämeenlinna where TURISAS also recorded "The Varangian Way" and "Stand Up And Fight".

With "Turisas2013", TURISAS deliberately aimed for a more organic sound.

Comments Nygård: "When it comes to the production, it's just the opposite of the polished and massive 'Stand Up And Fight'. It's raw and dry and in your face, but still maintaining that TURISAS largeness.

"People attest us that we are a great live band, and we wanted the album to be based more around that than orchestral massiveness. It's our most varied record to date and even if some of the songs sound very different, I think the common thread is that every single one has a lot of energy to it."

The mix and mastering was done by London-based producer Jaime Gomez Arellano, who previously worked with GHOST, PRIMODIAL and ULVER, just to name a few.

TURISAS will make select European festival appearances during the summer and will promote "Turisas2013" by embarking on an extensive European tour.

Bassist Jared MacEachern (pictured below) made his live debut with San Francisco Bay Area metallers MACHINE HEAD this past Monday night (June 24) in Spokane, Washington. More fan-filmed video footage of the concert can be seen below.

Some fans might remember MacEachern from MACHINE HEAD's 2007 "The Black Tyranny" tour, on which he performed with his previous band, SANCTITY. MACHINE HEAD, challenged to find a fill-in bass player for the North American tour after an injury sidelined their then-four-stringer Adam Duce, also found themselves in need of someone to sing harmony with singer/guitarist Robb Flynn. Flynn remembers: "We had locked in Brandon Sigmund of local boys HOSTILITY to play bass on that tour, but we soon realized we'd need someone to hit the high harmonies. Our A&R guy [at Roadrunner Records], Monte Conner, recommended Jared since he was already on the tour, and that ended up being a great call. Jared flew out a few days before the tour and rehearsed with us and did great. What was most impressive about the whole thing was that he was doing double duty — opening for MACHINE HEAD with his band at the time, SANCTITY, and then later singing with us. He would stay sober until after our set, and often get in the van and drive all night. His seriousness and dedication was awesome to see and it stuck with us."

Earlier this year, MACHINE HEAD conducted an extensive search for candidates through various channels, the most fruitful of which proved to be video submissions. Sifting through more than 400 videos, the band personally reviewed and evaluated everyone's performances, including MacEachern, who made the short list without a second thought. Lead guitarist Phil Demmel recalls: "There were dozens of amazing players, and it was interesting to watch each one take on our tunes. One of our biggest criteria for this gig was to be able to sing the high harmonies. That was our litmus test. And Jared passed with flying colors."

After reviewing all of the submissions, the band narrowed down the 400-plus candidates to a short list of seven, each of whom took a trip to Oakland to perform a handful of songs in person and spend the day hanging with the band. Drummer Dave McClain remembers: "Jared came in to the audition and just killed it! Besides being able to nail the bass and vocal harmonies, he also had the vibe and personality to make it feel like we were a BAND again. It was a great feeling and we all knew he was the guy."

MacEachern first picked up concert bass at 12, and around the same time discovered metal. Jared recalls: "I heard the [METALLICA] song 'Unforgiven' and really liked it. The next day my friend gave me [METALLICA's first album] 'Kill 'Em All' and it was over. I became completely enamored with all the metal bands of that time; METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER and PANTERA, but when it came to bass, it was all about Cliff Burton, he was, and is my dude." With a brief stint at the Brevard School for Music Performance, Jared has consistently played bass for the past 22 years, most notably in SANCTITY, where oddly enough, the band needed a guitar player. "That was purely out of necessity," he explains, "I'd been a bass player, but that gig opened up and I gave it a shot on the six-stringer."

After extensive global touring with SANCTITY and the birth of Jared's daughter in 2007, the band's release from their label ignited Jared's sense of responsibility and he quit the group to focus on her. But music stayed a part of his life and he continued to jam locally throughout the south with death metal bands FROM A DIG and TELIC, until he saw MACHINE HEAD were in need and thought he'd try out.

Frontman Robb Flynn reflects: "We really wanted a guy that was hungry for this, someone who could live and breathe this with us. Dave would joke around that we didn't want to get someone too green that'd be, like, 'Oh my god, is this a dressing room?!', but we also didn't want someone who was too jaded by the whole thing and 'been there done that.' We thought the perfect guy would be someone who'd paid some dues, who had done nine or ten crummy van tours, and wasn't broken by that, but inspired to keep going and play music, and in many ways that was Jared. I mean, hell, the guy's only rode in a bus for two nights, one of which was with us! It brings a really cool level of appreciation to the table, and it shows where his heart's at."

"You know, for so many years, we've talked about a new stage show and basically what we've been doing has been an extension of the old stage show. So people would sometimes come and, obviously, the band does a great show and it's great to be there, but some people would say, 'Gee, it doesn't look that different.' KISS recently completed an Australian tour with very special guests MÖTLEY CRÜE.

Due on August 30 via Nuclear Blast, the set features the band's sold-out homecoming show in Oberhausen, Germany on December 22, 2012 after an extensive 45-day European tour in support of KREATOR's "Phantom Antichrist" album. The packed and sweat-driven show was filmed by 24 cameras, as well as guitar and even mosh-pit cams.

The DVD/Blu-ray contains footage of the Oberhausen concert, a behind-the-scenes documentary as well as video clips. Approximate total running time: 115 minutes.

KREATOR will tour North America this fall with fellow thrashers OVERKILL.

On November 9, 2012, KREATOR released a new seven-inch single, "Civilization Collapse" (retail version: black; Nuclear Blast mailorder-only version: red, yellow, white) and as a digital download. The single contains the title cut backed by the non-album track "Wolfchild", which was featured on the "Dark Symphonies - A Tribute To John Sinclair" album, released in September 2012 in Germany via Lübbe-Audio. The band also made a video for the song "Civilization Collapse", which is said to be "mainly about the riots that took place in Greece most recently."

"Civilization Collapse" comes off KREATOR's new album, "Phantom Antichrist", which sold 3,900 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at No. 1 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

POISONBLACK — the Finnish band featuring former SENTENCED frontman Ville Laihiala — will release its sixth studio album, "Lyijy", on September 13. The CD was recorded at Sonic Pump studio in Helsinki and Victory Audio studio in Kokkola with producer Jonas Olsson.

The CD's opening track, "Home Is Where the Sty Is", will be released as the first single and video. You can now stream the song using the audio player below.

POISONBLACK will tour in Finland from September to November. The live set will include songs from the new album, but also some rare material which hasn't been played live before.

It was announced on May 30 by SLAYER's Tom Araya (bass, vocals) and Kerry King (guitar) that Paul Bostaph would be behind the drum kit for the first leg of the band's 2013 international tour. EXODUS' Gary Holt is continuing to fill in for fallen guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who died on May 2 from alcohol-related cirrhosis of the liver.

Bostaph was SLAYER's drummer from 1992 until 2001 and recorded four albums with the band — the gold-certified "Divine Intervention" (1994), the 1996 punk covers album "Undisputed Attitude", "Diabolus In Musica" (1998), "God Hates Us All" (2001) that received a Grammy nomination for "Best Metal Performance", as well as the DVD "War At The Warfield" (2001), also certified gold. In addition to SLAYER, Bostaph has been a member of FORBIDDEN, EXODUS, SYSTEMATIC and TESTAMENT.

SLAYER's 2013 itinerary will have the band playing 35 dates that will include headline shows as well as a number of major summer festivals in Europe, Eastern Europe and South America between June and October.

"Paul's a great drummer and a good friend, and we're very happy that he's decided to rejoin the band," said Araya. "We're still pretty numb from the loss of Jeff, but we don't want to disappoint our European and South American fans, and we need to begin moving forward... Having Paul back in the band makes that a whole lot easier."

Original SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo sat out the band's recent Australian tour due to a contract dispute with the other members of the group. Filling in for him was Jon Dette (TESTAMENT, ANTHRAX).

BORN OF OSIRIS will release its new full-length album on August 20 via Sumerian Records. A track from the CD, "Machine", can be streamed below. The song is available in multiple formats (MP3, WAV and Stems) for free with the option of making a donation. In addition, the band has relased a new promo video for the song which showcases the new album's artwork.

Look for BORN OF OSIRIS to perform on this summer's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, which kicks off this Saturday, June 29.

Stated BORN OF OSIRIS guitarist Lee McKinney: "We couldn't be more excited to not only have a new record coming out this summer, but to have a new single available in time for the start of Mayhem fest! 'Machine', to me, is just a straight-up, in-your-face BORN OF OSIRIS song. It's got an epic intro, intense orchestral content, heavy keyboard breakdowns, a great structure, impactful vocals and of course some gnarly guitar shred. It definitely hits hard from beginning to end. We can't wait to head out and play it live all summer long."

BORN OF OSIRIS's new album was recorded with producer Nick Sampson (I AM ABOMINATION, IN FEAR AND FAITH, ADESTRIA). Mixing the CD was Joey Sturgis, who has previously worked with ASKING ALEXANDRIA and EMMURE, among others.

McKinney previously stated about the upcoming CD: "W e're gonna be doing six-string and seven-string songs on the same recording for the first time ever. Aside from that, we've been more focused for this record than any of the previous. We've had two-plus years to write, critique, adjust and learn these songs, which is just something we haven't had in the past with our intense touring schedule. Like the last album ('The Discovery'), we've been living and writing this album together and it's made for the best, most focused BORN OF OSIRIS album to date."

"The Discovery" sold around 6,400 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 87 on The Billboard 200 chart. The group's previous CD, 2009's "A Higher Place", entered the charts at No. 73 with first-week sales of over 6,000 copies.

"The Discovery" was released on March 22, 2011 via Sumerian Records. The CD was recorded at BOTA Studio in Lake In The Hills, Illinois and was mixed by Jason Suecof (ALL THAT REMAINS, TRIVIUM, DEVILDRIVER).
