SATYRICON Frontman Hopes To Complete Long-In-The-Works Covers Album Next Year

SATYRICON Frontman Hopes To Complete Long-In-The-Works Covers Album Next Year

SATYRICON frontman Sigurd "Satyr" Wongraven says that the band is hoping to complete its long-in-the-works covers album sometime next year.

The Norwegian black metal band was originally going to release the covers disc prior to the arrival of its latest collection of all-new material, "Deep Calleth Upon Deep", but unforeseen events, including Satyr's brain-tumor diagnosis in 2015, resulted in a change of plans.

"It's something that we've been playing around with for the last three or four years in between other things, and hopefully we’ll have time to pursue that next year at some point," Satyr told Australia's Heavy. "When we eventually do it, it is going to be called 'Formative Oddities', and the reason for that is because that's exactly what it is going to be about. It's gonna be about stuff that helped shape our musical taste, but I don't wanna do something overly obvious like putting covers of VENOM and BLACK SABBATH in there. There's gonna be some folk music; there's gonna be some classic hard rock, some punk rock and perhaps also we'll try to do some versions of electronica things that are not within the category of typical extreme metal or all of the obvious ones."

In a separate interview with RockSverige.se, Satyr confirmed that DEAD KENNEDYS' "Holiday In Cambodia" is one of the songs SATYRICON will be tackling on "Formative Oddities". He also explained in greater detail why recording covers of VENOM and BATHORY isn't something he is interested in pursuing.

"The way I would phrase it is that one can assume we've been listening to BATHORY and so on, but what has also made an impact on me as a music lover and as an artist is traditional folk music, some electronica, classical music, punk rock, classic rock and hard rock, and hence the title 'Formative Oddities'. Things that helped shape us musically as music fans and as professional, but not necessarily the obvious ones."

Satyr said that he initially thought SATYRICON would record "Formative Oddities" prior to the making of "Deep Calleth Upon Deep". But then "all these things happened in my life and everything changed, and I said, 'Okay, guys, now there's so much crazy stuff going on and I can't do all of this.' So I did my own stuff and we can't pick up work on the record now because we're gonna tour for a year, and once we have toured a year, then I don't know what we're gonna feel. Do we want to do nothing for a while or do we head straight into a new album? Do we never want to do this again or would we like to pick up where we left off on 'Formative Oddities'?"

"Deep Calleth Upon Deep" was released on September 22 via Napalm Records. The disc was recorded in Oslo, Norway and Vancouver, Canada, during early 2017 and mixed together with revered studio guru Mike Fraser (who previously worked on SATYRICON's 2006 album, "Now, Diabolical").

The "Deep Calleth Upon Deep" front cover is an obscure drawing from 1898 by perhaps the greatest Norwegian artist of all time, Edvard Munch.

DEFTONES Singer Wants More Guitar On Next Record

DEFTONES Singer Wants More Guitar On Next Record

According to The Pulse Of Radio, DEFTONES frontman Chino Moreno told Revolver in a new interview that the band is thinking of starting to write music for its ninth studio album, saying: "We might start writing music. I'm thinking of going in the next couple months and staying with Stephen [Carpenter, guitarist] for a few days... Trying to think of different ways of writing music from scratch."

Moreno continued: "On our last record, [Carpenter] didn't have as much to do with the writing process as I would have liked for him to have. The idea this time is to just go hang out with him for a couple weeks at his house and just record him playing guitar, take some of the riffs, whatever he makes, organize stuff."

Moreno called Carpenter's guitar playing "one of the most — if not the most important part — of DEFTONES, what we do."

Carpenter admitted last year in an interview with Ultimate-Guitar.com that he "didn't want to play" on the band's last record, 2016's "Gore", saying, "It wasn't the style or the sound I was hoping we would take. It wasn't what I was expecting or wanting."

Moreno described Carpenter around the same time as the "odd man out" while the band recorded "Gore", although he added that it "wasn't our intention to exclude him."

Carpenter, however, dismissed speculation at the time that he would leave the band, which toured for more than a year in support of "Gore".

BUTCHER BABIES' CARLA HARVEY Says Gun Control And Mental Illness Aren't Sufficiently Dealt With In U.S.

BUTCHER BABIES' CARLA HARVEY Says Gun Control And Mental Illness Aren't Sufficiently Dealt With In U.S.

The rock world reacted in horror to the tragic events that occurred in Las Vegas on Sunday night (October 1), when a 64-year-old white male named Stephen Paddock opened fire from the thirty-second floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on thousands of people attending an outdoor concert in a nearby parking lot. At press time, fifty-eight people had been killed and more than five hundred wounded, with Paddock reportedly taking his own life before a SWAT team burst into his hotel room.

Speaking to "The Roman Show", BUTCHER BABIES singer Carla Harvey offered her views on the incident, saying (see video below): "Obviously, it's horrible. But this has been going on for years now, and all over the world, it's been going on forever — acts of terrorism. Any act like that, to me, is an act of terrorism, whether it's Muslim [or] whatever. Obviously, this is one sick person that wanted to leave his mark in a very horrific way.

"I think that mental illness is something that we don't deal with enough in this country," she continued. "Gun control is something that we don't deal with enough. But everybody has their own opinion; I don't really wanna get political about it in an interview, because we all have different opinions on stuff."

Police have yet to determine a motive for Paddock's killing spree. He reportedly had as many as nineteen guns with him in his hotel room, while more weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition were found at one of his two Nevada homes.

Jason Aldean was performing at the three-day Route 91 Harvest country music festival across Las Vegas Boulevard from the Mandalay Bay when the shooting erupted.

BUTCHER BABIES' third album, "Lilith", will be released on October 27 via Century Media. The follow-up to 2015's "Take It Like A Man" was produced by Steve Evetts (THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, SEPULTURA, SUICIDE SILENCE) and marks the band's recording debut with new drummer, Chase Brickenden, who replaced Chris Warner last year.

PHILIP ANSELMO Announces EN MINOR Project, Influenced By THE CURE And SISTERS OF MERCY

PHILIP ANSELMO Announces EN MINOR Project, Influenced By THE CURE And SISTERS OF MERCY

Former PANTERA singer Philip Anselmo has announced the formation of a new project called EN MINOR. The band, which is influenced by the classic goth period of the '80s with artists like THE CURE and SISTERS OF MERCY, will release its long-completed debut album in early 2018 via Anselmo's Housecore Records.

Anselmo, who is currently on the road with SUPERJOINT, spoke about EN MINOR's upcoming disc during an interview with Jimmy Cabbs's "5150" interview series, conducted before the former group's September 27 concert at the Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood, California.

"I have a record coming out that's been finished for two years almost now, of course — just like every other fucking record," Anselmo said (see video below). "It's with a band called EN MINOR. And I guess it would be my, 'Hello, great dark eighties of SISTERS OF MERCY, of THE CURE 'Seventeen Seconds' record and 'Faith' album.' Early THE CURE. Early U2. Nick Cave and the fucking BAD SEEDS or THE BIRTHDAY PARTY. David Bowie… I take all these influences and then somehow we came out with results.

"It is what it is," he continued. "I'll let the people decide at the end of the day. And we'll see. But, once again, I'm not shootin' for radio time here; I'm just trying to broaden my horizons, write some harkening songs. But I think they have their own life, honestly. It's retro only to a certain degree, I think, within me, because I know where it's coming from. But I guess when a listener hears it these days, most people react… I hear the word 'cinematic' a lot, and I hear, 'This is the best record you've done in thirty years,' or some shit like that, something like that."

According to Anselmo, EN MINOR is one of several projects he is currently shuffling, with a number of recordings scheduled to be made available over the coming months.

"I do have other releases [coming out] before [EN MINOR], and that is the new SCOUR [EP] has been finished for about a year. So that's coming out. The next [PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE] ILLEGALS is coming out, and that's a whole different kettle of fish from the first ILLEGALS. And then the EN MINOR is coming out. So I'm thinking maybe March of next year."

Philip also talked about the freedom he has as an artist to release many different types of albums through Housecore, his independent record label specializing in heavy music by a number of handpicked bands as well as his own projects.

"Having a record label right now is a money pit, of course — it's a labor of love," he explained. "People don't buy records anymore; they steal them, and they're used to stealing them. And I'll tell you what: if the laws were passed correctly tomorrow, making it absolutely shut-down fucking illegal — you have to purchase music — there would be a generation of kids who were pissed about it. You know it — because they're so coddled into it now, because of their little devices and machines and whatnot.

"I would love to personally sue the Internet for ruining the music business," he continued. "But at the same time, if I can give back in any way, shape or form and leave a dent with one of my bands, or one of the bands on Housecore Records, that'll feel good. And I think maybe long after you and I have bitten the dirt, maybe, just maybe, there'll be a little time capsule carved out, a bas-relief, that said, 'Here lies Housecore Records, and they still owe you nothing.'"

SUPERJOINT kicked off its U.S. tour with DEVILDRIVER on September 23 in Austin, Texas. The trek is hitting two dozen venues across the country, including this year's edition of Rock 'N' Shock in Worcester, Massachusetts. Additional support is being provided by Housecore labelmates CHILD BITE and KING PARROT as well as CANE HILL.

Watch DEEP PURPLE's Video For 'The Surprising'

British/American hard rock legends DEEP PURPLE are setting sail into new waters with their first-ever animated video.

The official clip for "The Surprising", one of the fan-favorite tracks from the band's latest album, "inFinite", takes the viewer on a journey through the magical fifty-year history of the band. With high attention to detail, the animated masterpiece follows the five heroes of our story — Ian Gillan, Ian Paice, Roger Glover, Don Airey and Steve Morse — through a stormy ship cruise full of allusions and sees them riding off into the sunset.

The video, which can be seen below, was directed and illustrated by Matt Rooke, alongside director Peter Rogers, who also produced the video together with Craig Hooper and Collin Games, known from the DEEP PURPLE movie documentary "From Here To inFinite". DEEP PURPLE and earMUSIC have also announced the release of the ninety-seven-minute documentary "From Here To inFinite", which is due out in November. It shows the history and origin of "inFinite" and provides a deep insight into the workings of the band for the first time on Blu-ray.

The Blu-ray further includes two hours of bonus material, including music videos such as "The Surprising", three previously unreleased live videos ("Time For Bedlam", "Birds of Prey" and "Smoke On The Water"), all filmed and recorded at Hellfest 2017, as well as in-depth behind-the-scenes footage, movie documentary outtakes, interviews, and an audio commentary by DEEP PURPLE themselves — all previously unreleased. In conjunction with the release of the Blu-ray, DEEP PURPLE and earMUSIC are also releasing "The inFinite Live Recorings, Pt. 1" on a special three-disc vinyl LP, produced by Bob Ezrin. This was recorded at Hellfest 2017, the biggest metal festival in France and contains a brand new previously unreleased eighty-minute live performance. FINGER DEATH PUNCH Releases 'Ain't My Last Dance' Music Video

FINGER DEATH PUNCH Releases 'Ain't My Last Dance' Music Video

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH has released a music video for the song "Ain't My Last Dance". The track is taken from the band's latest album, "Got Your Six", which came out in 2015.

"We thought this was the perfect song to address the various rumours circulating out there," said guitarist Zoltan Bathory. "Ivan [Moody, vocals] is doing great and the band is firing on all cylinders. Not just isn't this our 'last dance,' but as we are gearing up for the European tour, we are kicking it up a notch and building our biggest stage show to date."

As previously reported, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH is still waiting to get a release date for its new album, nearly one year after the disc was completed.

The band delivered its follow-up to "Got Your Six" to Prospect Park several months ago, but a legal battle with the company has delayed the LP's arrival.

"We finished a record," FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH guitarist Jason Hook told the WRIF radio station. "Some people may or may not know, but we got into a legal tangle with our label. So we submitted this record in December [of 2016]. It's finished. They have it, and they're trying to decide what they wanna do with it, which is a drag. But we do have a finished record."

Saying that the the new FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH disc turned out "killer," Hook revealed that the effort will contain "sixteen new songs. Some of the stuff will be right in line with what people want and expect from the band, and then some of it, again, we took some chances, tried to branch out a little bit to see if it would work, and some of that stuff wound up on the record," he said.

Hook added that he loves making albums because "it's exciting to add to our catalog and to be creative.

"When you're done with a record, you sit back and listen to it and you go, 'Fuck! That's pretty cool. We did that. We made it. We made another one,'" he said. "So I like it. Plus I get to sleep in my own bed [while we are recording the album in Las Vegas], which is nice."

Hook also touched upon the issues surrounding Moody, whose struggles with substance abuse had forced him to miss a number of shows last year and this past spring. The frontman also made headlines with a bizarre 2015 onstage meltdown in Memphis and a disastrous performance this past June in Tilburg.

"Look, it's never that bad," Hook said. "It's not that bad. I mean, basically, when you're in the public eye, you can't stumble without everybody knowing about it. That is part of it that you have to learn to deal with.

"Everybody has their Monday morning at work, and sometimes ours falls on Saturday night," he reasoned.

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH filed a new lawsuit against Prospect Park in April, asking a judge to release them from their contract and order the company to pay over a million dollars in damages.

The label sued FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH in 2016 for breach of contract, alleging that the group wanted to rush the recording of a new album. The band signed a new North American recording deal with Rise Records last year.

LIV SIN Supports Animal Rights With New Single 'King Of The Damned'

LIV SIN Supports Animal Rights With New Single 'King Of The Damned'

LIV SIN, the new band led by former SISTER SIN vocalist Liv "Sin" Jagrell, has released a new song called "King Of The Damned" via Bandcamp. The track is a call to action for the public to do something about the extinction of the world's wildlife. The band has chosen to work with the Swedish animal rights organization Djurens Rätt during the single campaign.

Jagrell got the inspiration for the lyrics to "King Of The Damned" from Nick Brandt's picture of Cecil The Lion from "Inherit The Dust", a photo exhibition where Brandt revisited places where he used to take pictures of the wildlife that shows how these landscapes now has turned into wastelands filled with piles of garbage.

"This is extremely depressing and not flattering for mankind," says Jagrell. "Unfortunately, this is the way we are heading if we do nothing. Remember 'Lion King'? Well, soon there is not going to be any 'King Of The Jungle' left. The few lions left will become the 'King Of The Damned' instead."

LIV SIN's debut album, "Follow Me", was released in April via the Swedish label Despotz Records. The effort was co-produced by longtime ACCEPT and U.D.O. member Stefan Kaufmann.

LIV SIN has just completed a string of European dates in the U.K., Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Switzerland and Belgium. Next week, the band will embark on a major tour of Spain.

THE ABSENCE Signs With M-THEORY AUDIO

THE ABSENCE Signs With M-THEORY AUDIO

Reactivated Florida metal outfit THE ABSENCE has signed a deal with M-Theory Audio. The band's new album will be released in early 2018.

THE ABSENCE came onto the scene in 2005 with its crushing Metal Blade debut, "From Your Grave". The album, and its two follow-up releases, 2007's "Riders Of The Plague" and 2010's "Enemy Unbound", showcased the perfect mixture of heart-wrenching melodies and skull-pounding aggression truly making them one of the premiere bands of the melodic death metal scene. THE ABSENCE further cemented its reputation via several tours supporting some of the biggest names in metal. And then they seemingly disappeared. As a result of setbacks in personnel and, for some bandmembers, a desire to explore new terrain by recording and performing with additional groups or working in related fields producing or handling live sound/tour managing for others, THE ABSENCE was put on hold waiting for the right time to return. Last year, the revamped band — consisting of singer Jamie Stewart, drummer Jeramie Kling and bassist Mike Leon, along with the addition of celebrated guitar duo Joey Concepcion (JASTA, ARMAGEDDON) and Taylor Nordberg (SOILWORK, RIBSPREADER) — teased fans with the face-melting "Septic Testament". The reaction was phenomenal and motivated the band members to continue writing and recording the epic return and be absent from the scene no more. M-Theory Audio is headed by former Century Media president Marco Barbieri and includes with a team of friends and seasoned pros who have worked with labels like Victory, Prosthetic and Epitaph. "We as a unit could not be happier to sign a deal with such an amazing group of hardworking people," states Kling. "Marco and the crew over at M-Theory are the future of record labels!" "I am thrilled to sign THE ABSENCE to M-Theory Audio and continue this next chapter," declares Marco. "I've followed THE ABSENCE as a fan since the beginning and always thought they were one of the better new bands. I love their mix of rapid-fire hostility and ear-pleasing guitar work."

IRON MAIDEN's BRUCE DICKINSON Introduces 'Hallowed' Beer In New Video

IRON MAIDEN's BRUCE DICKINSON Introduces 'Hallowed' Beer In New Video

British rock legends IRON MAIDEN and independent family brewers Robinsons have released a brand new Belgian-style beer: Hallowed. This new ale follows on from the success of the original Trooper, which has sold over fifteen million pints since its launch in 2013, and previous limited-edition beers Trooper 666 and Red 'N' Black. Once again, the dynamic duo of Robinsons's master brewer Martyn Weeks and IRON MAIDEN's lead vocalist and ale aficionado Bruce Dickinson have teamed up to create something very special for beer and music fans alike. Dickinson explains: "What makes this brew pretty special is that we're adopting a Belgian yeast for the first time. I'm a big fan of Belgian beers, so I jumped at the chance to brew my own. While I get very excited about experimenting with new formulas and ingredients, the thing about Belgian beer is that it's as much a way of life as it is a drink. We've tried to bottle that philosophy in Hallowed, albeit with a British twist." At 6.0% ABV in a 330ml bottle, Hallowed is a Belgian-inspired beer that's brewed in England. It is also one of the first beers to be brewed by Robinsons Brewery that uses Belgian yeast. Robinsons haven't changed the yeast used in their beers since 1942, which makes Hallowed even more special. Weeks continues: "It's all in the yeast. Belgian yeast yields a very distinct taste and presentation. You can sniff out a Belgian beer simply from its aromas: fruity, spicy and earthy. Belgian yeasts withstand higher alcohol levels, they attenuate well and create an array of phenolics and esters… put simply, this means more flavour and I think Hallowed drinkers are in for a treat." Hallowed's innovative bottle label pays tribute to Belgian beer, presenting IRON MAIDEN's iconic mascot Eddie, robed in traditional monk's clothing: a nod to the Trappist monastic brewing tradition in Belgium.

A new ten-minute video in which Dickinson introduces Hallowed can be seen below.

Listen To New QUICKSAND Song 'Cosmonauts'

Listen To New QUICKSAND Song 'Cosmonauts'

"Cosmonauts", a brand new song from QUICKSAND, can be streamed below. The track is taken from the New York City post-hardcore band's upcoming album, "Interiors", which will be released on November 10 via Epitaph.

QUICKSAND's first album in twenty-two years, "Interiors" features the band's original (and only) lineup of drummer Alan Cage, frontman/guitarist Walter Schreifels, bassist Sergio Vega and guitarist Tom Capone.

Recorded at Studio 4 Recording in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, "Interiors" was produced and engineered by Will Yip (THE MENZINGERS, TITLE FIGHT, PIANOS BECOME THE TEETH). While the album finds QUICKSAND embracing the cathartic, guitar-driven dynamic of the band's earlier work, "Interiors" also takes on a wider spectrum of sound.

"It was all just about being ourselves and who we were as well as who we are," says Schreifels of the making of "Interiors". "We did it for us completely."

"Interiors" track listing:

01. Illuminant02. Under The Screw03. Warm And Low04. >05. Cosmonauts06. Interiors07. Hyperion08. Fire This Time09. Feels Like A Weight Has Been Lifted10. >>11. Sick Mind12. Normal Love

Formed in 1990, QUICKSAND released its full-length debut, "Slip" — a 1993 effort recently praised by The A.V. Club as "a nearly flawless record that combines the irony and heaviness of HELMET with FUGAZI's penchant to dismantle sound in the most energetic ways." Arriving in 1995, their sophomore album, "Manic Compression", appeared at #1 on the Top Five Best Post-Hardcore Records list from LA Weekly (who noted that "if there were any justice in the world, QUICKSAND would have been the biggest underground band of the '90s").

"We were very influenced by FUGAZI and JANE'S ADDICTION," says Schreifels of the band’s beginnings. "But we were doing it in a certain context with an energy that was just special and unique and kind of shined through."

Throughout the early '90s, QUICKSAND toured with bands like HELMET, FUGAZI, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE and ANTHRAX. After disbanding in late 1995, they reunited for a one-night performance in June 2012. They’ve since appeared at festivals like FYF Fest and Pukkelpop, and in 2013 embarked on their first North American tour in fifteen years.

OBSCURA Begins Recording Fifth Album

OBSCURA Begins Recording Fifth Album

Technical death metal masters OBSCURA have entered the studio to record their yet-to-be titled fifth full-length album. The record is the final of a running four-album concept cycle that began with "Cosmogenesis" in 2009. The band is recording the album with longtime producer V. Santura (TRIPTYKON, PESTILENCE) at Woodshed Studios in Landshut, Germany. A summer 2018 release via Relapse is expected.

Vocalist/guitarist Steffen Kummerer commented on the new material: "With our new album, we complete a four-album cycle that started back in 2009 when 'Cosmogenesis' saw the light of day, followed by 'Omnivium' in 2011 and our most recent record, 'Akroasis', which was released earlier last year. Four albums linked in depth in terms of music, lyrics and visuals turned into a consistent ten-year-long effort.

"We enter Woodshed Studios alongside our longtime producer and friend V. Santura to record our most experimental and progressive record to date.

"While we took off the upcoming three months to record and produce our new album, we will finish the 'Akroasis' world tour with additional tour dates around the globe in 2018."

In other news, OBSCURA has announced the vinyl reissue of "Cosmogenesis". Repressed on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 2009, the record is a front-to-back stroke of brilliance that seamlessly fuses modern metals extremity, the upper levels of technical virtuosity, and the symphonic grace of progressive music into a flawless album experience. On "Cosmogenesis", OBSCURA more than justified its impressive pedigree as technical metal masters, an album that has since been regarded as one of the best metal albums of the 21st century.

The vinyl reissue of "Cosmogenesis" is due out November 3.

SCORPIONS To Be Honored By The Los Angeles City Council

SCORPIONS To Be Honored By The Los Angeles City Council

According to MyNewsLA.com, Friday, October 6 will be declared "Scorpions Day" in the city of Los Angeles in honor of the German hard rock veterans who amassed a string of Billboard chart toppers in the 1980s.

SCORPIONS will be honored by the Los Angeles City Council. They are being recognized for "fifty-two years of excellence in rock 'n' roll, including making records in Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world," said City Councilman Jose Huizar, who authored the resolution to honor the band.

The group will accept the honor in person at the council meeting, which will be held at Van Nuys City Hall.

The resolution notes that the group has ties to L.A., where the band recorded three albums and has frequently performed over the years.

SCORPIONS were ranked No. 46 on VH1's "Greatest Artists Of Hard Rock" and their song "Rock You Like A Hurricane" landed at No. 18 on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs". Celebrated across the globe, the iconic rock act has sold more than a hundred million albums worldwide, and has received multiple honors, including a World Music Award, a postage stamp in Brazil, induction into the Hollywood RockWalk, Echo honors, and a Lower-Saxony State Prize.

SCORPIONS released their nineteenth studio album, "Return To Forever", in 2015, the same year the band celebrated its fiftieth anniversary.

SCORPIONS kicked off their North American tour with MEGADETH on September 14 at Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania. The sixteen-date trek, dubbed the "Crazy World Tour", celebrates SCORPIONS' 1990 LP of the same name. Two of the SCORPIONS' best-known songs, "Winds Of Change" and "Send Me An Angel", both appear on "Crazy World".

SCORPIONS have just finished recording a couple of new songs for a forthcoming compilation album that will collect the most popular of their ballad-type material.

Video Premiere: VEIL OF MAYA's 'Doublespeak'

Video Premiere: VEIL OF MAYA's 'Doublespeak'

The official music video for the song "Doublespeak" from Illinois's VEIL OF MAYA can be seen below. The track is taken from the band's new album, "False Idol", which will be released on October 20 via Sumerian Records. The disc is described in a press release as "a marked sonic evolution — it's more hypnotic, heavier, and hits harder than ever before. 'False Idol' also encodes a curious narrative underneath a maelstrom of polyrhythmic guitars, sweeping vocals, and shuddering beats."

"The whole album is told from a first-person perspective", explains vocalist Lukas Magyar. "You're following this character, who's not the nicest person, and he rises to power. You'll have to listen to find out what happens — it's a very dark storyline."

"It felt more like we were making a movie or a TV series," guitarist Marc Okubo adds. "Lukas actually had a storyboard idea that we talked about before even starting. It's almost like we were providing the soundtrack in VEIL OF MAYA's template."

The seeds for this widescreen ambition can be traced back to 2015's "Matriarch", which bowed at No. 2 on the Billboard Hard Rock chart and spawned the band's biggest hit to date in the form of "Mikasa" — the video racked up over 5.2 million YouTube views and 5.1 million Spotify streams. The album also earned critical acclaim from Billboard, Alternative Press, New Noise Magazine and more.

The release of "Matriarch" saw VEIL OF MAYA hit the road with the likes of ANIMALS AS LEADERS, UPON A BURNING BODY, VOLUMES, CHELSEA GRIN, OCEANS ATE ALASKA and other heavy hitters, as well as performing on the Vans Warped Tour. Then, in late 2016, the band headed to Los Angeles to record what would become "False Idol". Marc Okubo worked with producer Max Schad in one studio, while Lukas Magyar teamed up with vocal producer Brandon Paddock in another.

"Working in two studios at the same time was a new approach for us," says Marc. "In the past, we completed all of the instrumentals for Lukas to then marinate on. Everything was done by the time he joined the band, but this is the first time we got to write with his voice in mind. And another change was that he was writing on the spot — it brought a different energy and ended up being really cool. Working with Max [Schad] made a big difference too."

The end product is a darker and heavier vibe, with first single "Overthrow" effortlessly moving from a crushing tidal wave of riffs into a soaring, striking clean refrain. It taps into the expansive energy of signature fan favourites, whilst elevating the group to a new level. In "False Idol", VEIL OF MAYA have an album that crushes pulverizing power with an unforgettable narrative in the landscape of their most definitive work to date.

"We wanted to create something fresh," Lukas explains. "We didn't recycle the same old thing. It's a new beginning."

"I hope the record is one that people will want to go back to and study again," agrees Marc. "It's worth more than one listen."

VEIL OF MAYA is:

Video: ALL THAT REMAINS Performs Acoustic Cover Version Of GARTH BROOKS's 'The Thunder Rolls'

Video: ALL THAT REMAINS Performs Acoustic Cover Version Of GARTH BROOKS's 'The Thunder Rolls'

Video footage of ALL THAT REMAINS performing an acoustic version of its cover of Garth Brooks's "The Thunder Rolls" at the studios of the Des Moines, Iowa radio station Lazer 103.3 can be seen below. Also available is an in-studio interview conducted by Andy Hall. The original "The Thunder Rolls" song, which was a No. 1 Hot Country Songs hit during the spring of 1991, was written "about somebody who's cheating on his wife, and every time he does it, the thunder rolls," according to Brooks.

ALL THAT REMAINS's version of "The Thunder Rolls" appears on the band's latest album, "Madness", which was released on April 28 via Razor & Tie in the U.S. and Eleven Seven Music in Europe. The disc was recorded at West Valley Studios in Woodland Hills, California with producer Howard Benson, who has previously worked with such acts as MOTÖRHEAD, PAPA ROACH, THREE DAYS GRACE, FLYLEAF, P.O.D. and HALESTORM.

ALL THAT REMAINS singer Phil Labonte told Billboard about the "sellout" accusations that have been leveled at the band for the more radio-friendly sound of the album's first single and title track, "Madness": "We're continuing to push what people's notion of what ALL THAT REMAINS is and what we're allowed to do and what we're willing to do, in what ways we're willing to go and experiment. So far the reaction has been really cool. It's also kind of what I expected; Our core audience likes a lot of diverse styles of music and gets it, and I think there's enough stuff on it for people that haven't heard ALL THAT REMAINS before to be kind of lured in. That's always our point: how can we reach out to new people?"

Watch GHOST's 'Final' Performance With PAPA EMERITUS III

Watch GHOST's 'Final' Performance With PAPA EMERITUS III

Fan-filmed video footage of the last-ever GHOST concert to feature frontman Papa Emeritus III can be seen below. The show took place Saturday night (September 30) in Gothenburg and saw the singer apparently being dismissed from the band.

Papa was forcibly removed from the stage by two men during the band's closing number, "Monstrance Clock", A short time later, a very elderly man wearing a white and gold version of Papa's robes and his signature make-up took the stage and addressed the crowd, saying in Italian, "I am Papa Emeritus Zero. The party is over and now a new era begins. The Middle Ages begin now."

The band posted footage of the incident to its official Instagram account but has yet to comment on the matter. It appears, however, that the reign of Papa III has ended.

Of course, all this is part of a big inside joke: the band supposedly dismisses the old Papa and recruits a new one on every LP, but they are all the same person — founder Tobias Forge, who will no doubt perform as a new Papa Emeritus on the next album cycle.

Forge recently revealed that he's been working on the group's fourth studio album for an early 2018 release. The new disc will follow up 2015's "Meliora", which featured the Grammy-winning hit "Cirice", and last year's "Popestar" EP, which included the chart-topping "Square Hammer".

After several years of not revealing his or the rest of the band's identities, Forge recently confirmed his own while responding to a lawsuit filed by four former members of GHOST, who accused him of cheating them out of their rightful share of the group's profits.

Forge hired an all-new lineup of the group for touring purposes in the first half of 2017, with the musicians all anonymously performing as Nameless Ghouls.

SKINLAB Releases First New Music In Eight Years

SKINLAB Releases First New Music In Eight Years

"End Of Silence", a brand new song from reactivated San Francisco Bay Area metallers SKINLAB, can be streamed below. The track marks the first new music from the band since 2009's "The Scars Between Us" album.

SKINLAB says: "We are excited to share the first new music in nearly ten years. Just a taste of what's to come... Occult 2018!"

The song was produced by Steve Holt of 36 CRAZYFISTS and Juan Urteaga and the video for the track was created by Mika Whitfield.

SKINLAB's current lineup features Steev Esquivel (vocals, bass) and Paul Hopkins (drums) alongside lead guitarist Rich Pia, formerly of Bay Area's MUDFACE.

SKINLAB played a string of West Coast dates in the spring celebrating the twentieth anniversary of its debut album, "Bound, Gagged And Blindfolded".

Formed in 1994, SKINLAB has released four studio albums: 1997's "Bound, Gagged And Blindfolded", 1999's "Disembody: The New Flesh", 2002's "ReVolting Room" and "The Scars Between Us".

The original lineup of SKINLAB — Esquivel, Hopkins (drums), Gary Wendt (guitar) and Mike Roberts (guitar) — played "Bound, Gagged And Blindfolded" in its entirety at the BlackThorne Screamfest in October 2106 at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena in Pico Rivera, California.

"Bound, Gagged And Blindfolded" was reissued in October 2007 via Century Media Records. The repackaged disc featured never-before-seen video footage and pictures with liner notes from Esquivel and Roberts along with new artwork layout.

SKINLAB has had different lineups throughout its history, with Esquivel and Hopkins as the only mainstays.

In a 2011 interview with Thrash Magazine, Esquivel stated about SKINLAB's sound: "Everyone said we were too death metal on 'Bound, Gagged And Blindfolded', which we didn't agree with. We've never really fit into any one genre. We're definitely not nu metal, which a lot of people think, and we're definitely not metalcore. We just write what feels good to us without losing the sound of SKINLAB. Everyone has their own opinion and interpretation on what genre we fall into."

OPETH's MIKAEL ÅKERFELDT Wants Next Album To Be 'Twisted'

OPETH's MIKAEL ÅKERFELDT Wants Next Album To Be 'Twisted'

OPETH leader Mikael Åkerfeldt says that he wants the band's next album to be more "twisted."

The Swedish progressive metal band released its twelfth studio disc, "Sorceress", a year ago, and the guitarist/vocalist is already looking ahead to the follow-up effort and what it might sound like.

He tells Eonmusic: "'Sorceress', for me, is old hat. It's a lovely record, but it's back 'there.' I'm not lingering on it because it's old now. I'm not lingering on this record as being a beacon of hope for anything — it's just what we did then, and I'm hoping next time we're going to do something different, and I hope, something twisted. Nothing necessarily great, but twisted at least."

As for when OPETH's next studio album could arrive, Åkerfeldt says: "Maybe the end of… or mid-2019, I'm thinking. I want to have a sabbatical, because we've been doing this for a long time, so I want to keep away and just be with my kids. Once I write songs, I want to sit and be."

"Sorceress" was released in September 2016. For the band's first effort for Nuclear Blast via OPETH's imprint label Moderbolaget Records, the group returned to Rockfield Studios in Wales, also home to pivotal releases from QUEEN, RUSH and JUDAS PRIEST, where the Swedes had tracked "Pale Communion" in 2014 with Tom Dalgety.

IRON MAIDEN's BRUCE DICKINSON Unboxes Memoir, 'What Does This Button Do?' (Video)

IRON MAIDEN's BRUCE DICKINSON Unboxes Memoir, 'What Does This Button Do?' (Video)

Dey Street Books (formerly It Books), an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, will publish IRON MAIDEN frontman Bruce Dickinson's autobiography, "What Does This Button Do?", in the U.S. on October 31.

A two-and-a-half-minute video clip in which Dickinson unboxes the first copy of the book can be seen below.

Heavy metal pioneers since their formation in 1975, IRON MAIDEN have sold over ninety million albums and played over two thousand shows in sixty-three countries, making them one of the most successful and globally influential bands of all time. One of the world's most storied musicians, Dickinson has been the band's internationally acclaimed lead singer for more than thirty years, and quite aside from the decades spent delivering high-octane performances with his larger-than-life persona, Bruce has lived an extraordinary off-stage existence too. A true polymath, Bruce is, or has been, an airline pilot and captain, an aviation entrepreneur, a beer brewer, motivational speaker, film scriptwriter, twice-published novelist, radio presenter, TV actor and a world-class fencer.

Over the last couple of years, and throughout MAIDEN's "The Book Of Souls" world tour, which has covered thirty-nine countries and one hundred and seventeen shows since February 2016, Bruce has turned his unbridled creativity to writing his memoirs, longhand (in seven A4 notebooks no less).

In "What Does This Button Do?", Bruce (a man who famously never gives interviews about his personal life) shares, for the first time, the most fascinating recollections, including his thirty years with MAIDEN, the early days, his childhood within the eccentric British school system, going solo, realising his dream of flying jumbo jets and his recent battle with tongue cancer. Dickinson is so much more than the frontman of one of the biggest bands on the planet. A rock icon, a true renaissance man, Bruce has been, and remains, a man of legend.

Bold, honest, intelligent and very entertaining, "What Does This Button Do?" is the long-awaited window into the life, heart and mind of one of our most adventurous and multifaceted sons. The global publication on October 19 will be accompanied with a commensurate international book tour. More details to come soon.

Bruce said: "It was flattering to be approached to write a book about my experiences and it seems an appropriate time to do this."

Publishing director Jack Fogg negotiated world rights with Adrian Sington at Kruger Cowne, Dave Daniel at Celebrity Speakers and MAIDEN's management, Phantom Music Management, and will publish in conjunction with Denise Oswald, senior editor at Dey Street in HarperCollins U.S.

Fogg said: "There's no one like Bruce. Which other rock musician can fly a 747, or fence at an international level? He's a total one-off; engaging, funny, warm, self-deprecating — a British eccentric in its very best form. His book will be outstanding and I am so delighted we get to publish it and work with him."

Oswald said: "Bruce Dickinson might quite literally be the world's most interesting man. He's a true Renaissance man, and being one of the greatest rock singers of all time is merely the beginning. His memoir, like his voice, is sure to set a new gold standard and we're thrilled to be working with him on it."

Anette Ekström, MD HarperCollins Nordic, said: "We are so very pleased to be the publishing house for this exciting book! The Nordic countries have a steady fan base for heavy metal, and IRON MAIDEN in particular. Our aim is to publish the memoir in all four Nordic languages, as close to the English release as possible as we understand the fans will be anxious for it."

An excerpt from the book, in which we pick up the story at the tail end of Bruce's time in SAMSON, heading into a rather important meeting at Reading festival, can be found at IronMaiden.com.

Dickinson will read from his forthcoming autobiography, "What Does This Button Do?", talk about the experience of writing it and answer questions from the audience at half a dozen U.S. appearances in late October and early November:

Listen To New L.A. GUNS Song 'Baby Gotta Fever'

"Baby Gotta Fever", a new song from L.A. GUNS, can be streamed below. The track is taken from the band's upcoming album, "The Missing Peace", which will be released on October 13 via the Italian record label Frontiers Music Srl. The disc's cover artwork was created by the Las Vegas portrait painter Kahla and can be seen below.

As the revival of the classic '80s hard rock and heavy metal scene continues unabated here in the 21st century, one reunion has been at the top of the wishlists of many a fan for a long time: the songwriting combination of Tracii Guns and Philip Lewis under the L.A. GUNS banner. What once seemed like a distant memory with no hope of returning has now come around and fans are about to be rewarded for keeping their fingers crossed and their hopes up. "The Missing Peace" track listing:

01. It's All The Same To Me02. Speed03. A Drop Of Bleach04. Sticky Fingers05. Christine06. Baby Gotta Fever07. Kill It Or Die08. Don't Bring A Knife To A Gunfight09. The Flood's The Fault Of The Rain10. The Devil Made Me Do It11. The Missing Peace12. Gave It All Away "'The Missing Peace' is truly an album by definition," said Guns. "It's a collection of music that I have been working on for about twelve years with various styles of rock music. From blues to classical influences, these are all hard-hitting songs. I am very proud of all of the contributions to this album by other members and writers. L.A. GUNS fans are in for a treat."

The last time Lewis and Guns joined forces was back in 2000 with legendary producer Andy Johns for the making of what would become "Waking The Dead". Speaking with Express & Star, Tracii said: "With Phil and I in particular, we have a certain chemistry that's undeniable. And, you know, when you're at your loneliest, you wanna go home, right? So, we both felt like it was time to go home and be comfortable with that undeniable relationship that we have musically. I mean, right away, the first time we got back together and played, you know, it's so obvious, you can't deny it. At some point in your life, you can't deny what's real." Regarding the sound of the new L.A. GUNS material, Tracii said: "Phil's vocal style and his way of writing kind of offsets that balance of the heavy music, that's something that's possibly more mainstream or identifiable, so there's a lot of, you know, kind of typical sleazy L.A. GUNS, high-energy riff rock. There's a little bit of sloppy New Orleans, kind of sweaty, kind of bluesier stuff too. It's a big record." L.A. GUNS' present lineup is rounded out by Shane Fitzgibbon on drums and Johnny Martin on bass with Michael Grant on guitar as a touring member. On the topic of the decision to use the L.A. GUNS moniker for the new album, Guns told LA Weekly: "When you put Phil and I together, that's the sound of L.A. GUNS. There's no way around that. As much as I love certain other [former] members of the band, it's hard to say what their contribution to the overall sound of the band was — but Phil Lewis and Tracii Guns, the band's gotta be L.A. GUNS. It can't be anything else." Back in December, Phil announced that he was leaving the L.A. GUNS version that included drummer Steve Riley. L.A. GUNS 2017 is:

THE OBSESSED Shares "The Way She Fly" Acoustic Video; US Headlining Tour Underway

Doom rock legends The Obsessed have shared an acoustic performance of "The Way She Fly" recorded live at the Gibson Guitar Recording Studio in New York City. The song is taken from the band's self-titled, debut album, set for reissue via Relapse Records and available for pre-order below.

Says guitarist Scott "Wino" Weinrich, "The re-release of The Obsessed through Relapse was celebrated in the luxurious Gibson NYC facility with an opportunity for Brian and I to do a couple songs 'wooden'... or acoustic. 'The Way She Fly' seemed to feel right. A gorgeous Gibson John Lennon mahogany acoustic guitar, Bri-dog grooving the cajon, and the warm natural room sound, was perfect. We hope you enjoy it."

Listen to the remastered, studio version of "The Way She Fly":

The Obsessed's self-titled reissue is due out November 17th on 2xCD, LP, 2xLP, and digital formats via Relapse Records. Physical bundles and digital preorders are available via Relapse Records here and streaming services at this location.

HELIX Frontman BRIAN VOLLMER Debuts Lyric Video For "When The Bitter's Got The Better Of You"

"Last week I released two singles to Canadian radio," says Helix frontman Brian Vollmer. "Here's the second one: 'When The Bitter's Got The Better Of You'. Thanks to everyone for your support. Please spread the word and of course pick up an advance copy!"

Helix frontman Brian Vollmer is also streaming the new Vollmer single, “Get Yer Hands Dirty”, featuring Danko Jones. Says Brian: “So here it is ladies and gentlemen! The first Vollmer single 'Get Yer Hands Dirty' with special guest Danko Jones. You can purchase an advance CD or vinyl through our website at planethelix.com under Merch.”

Vollmer previously checked in with an update on his solo album, Get Yer Hands Dirty:

"Coming soon! In the next week we'll be taking advance orders for Get Yer Hands Dirty on the Merch section of the Helix website for both vinyl and CD. Got some great players on this disc including Danko Jones, who sang lead vocals with me on the first track. The disc was produced by Juno Award winning Gavin Brown, who also drummed on the tracks. As well, Sean Kelly rips it up on guitar, Daryl Gray holds down the fort on the bass, Matt Weidinger channels the ghost of Leon Russell on keyboards, and Cheryl Lescom kicks ass until it's blue."

Check out some behind-the-scenes footage from the studio below.

"In light of everything that's happened over the last days, we wanted to dedicate this video to all the people who have lost their lives, their families and loved ones, through needless and senseless violence," says The Dead Daisies.

"We recently played a Concert for Peace at Woodstock, Poland, and want to share this video (of 'Let It Be', originally done by The Beatles) with everyone. Remember, it all starts With You & I."
