Watch SONS OF APOLLO Perform DREAM THEATER's 'Lines In The Sand'SONS OF APOLLO, the "supergroup" featuring former DREAM THEATER members Mike Portnoy and Derek Sherinian alongside Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal (ex-GUNS N' ROSES), Billy Sheehan (THE WINERY DOGS, MR. BIG, DAVID LEE ROTH) and Jeff Scott Soto (ex-JOURNEY, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN'S RISING FORCE), made its live debut on February 3 as part of the Cruise To The Edge, a five-night cruise from Tampa to Belize. SONS OF APOLLO closed its set with a version of the DREAM THEATER song "Lines In The Sand", which Portnoy and Sherinian originally recorded with the latter band for 1997's "Falling Into Infinity" album.
SONS OF APOLLO's debut album, "Psychotic Symphony", was released in October 20 via InsideOut Music. The band incorporates the progressive style and individual technical prowess that Portnoy and Sherinian shared together in DREAM THEATER combined with the swagger and groove of VAN HALEN, DEEP PURPLE and LED ZEPPELIN.
Last fall, Portnoy told Dream Theater World that the setlist for SONS OF APOLLO's first tour would "inevitably" include "some of the old DREAM THEATER material that [Derek and I] wrote together. We'll do some covers, but once we go to the second album, it will be strictly SONS OF APOLLO," he said. "But this time around, we'll need things like that to fill out the setlist, so you'll get those moments revisited."
According to Portnoy, the DREAM THEATER overtones on SONS OF APOLLO's debut album came about organically. "We are who we are," he told Loudwire. "The albums that we made together in DREAM THEATER in the '90s when Derek was in the band, a big part of that sound and style was coming from me and Derek. If you listen to 'Lines In The Sand' or 'Hell's Kitchen' or 'New Millennium', that's a lot of myself and Derek in those songs. So when we put together SONS OF APOLLO, it wasn't a conscious thing to bring that into this band, it was just a natural thing, because that's just who we are. That's what we're bringing to the table. That's our styles and our sounds and our personalities. So inevitably a lot of that ended up in SONS OF APOLLO.
"I think that when we first put the idea of the band together, we thought that it would end up being mainly that kind of sound and style," he continued. "But I think maybe once we brought Bumblefoot and Jeff Soto and Billy on board, it ended up going to so many different places. And now when I think you listen to the end result, it goes way beyond the prog metal kind of tag or the DREAM THEATER comparison. I think [if] you listen to the album as a whole, it's going to way more places than that."
SONS OF APOLLO has just kicked off its first-ever U.S. tour. The eight-date run began last night (Friday, February 9) at Magic City Casino in Miami, Florida and will wrap up February 18 at The Forge in Joliet, Illinois.

BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION Releases Official Music Video For 'The Cove'BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION's video for "The Cove" can be seen below. The track is taken from the band's fourth album, "BCCIV", which was released last September via Mascot Records. This is BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION's first studio album since 2013's "Afterglow".
BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION is the Anglo-American rock group comprising vocalist/bassist Glenn Hughes (DEEP PURPLE, TRAPEZE), drummer Jason Bonham (LED ZEPPELIN, FOREIGNER), Derek Sherinian (DREAM THEATER, ALICE COOPER, BILLY IDOL) and blues-rock guitarist/vocalist Joe Bonamassa.
Hughes told Express that "The Cove" was written about the annual slaughter of dolphins in the Japanese fishing village of Taiji. An ambassador for the Dolphin Project charity, he said: "Between February and March each year, fifty dolphin hunters in the Japanese village of Taiji go deep into the ocean and net and bring in the dolphins into the killing cove and slaughter them for food and entertainment. Now that I am a vegan, I want to educate people as it's deeply saddening to see how these beautiful creatures are killed. I want to be of service to the human race and show people that this is wrong!"
Just like its three predecessors, "BCCIV" was overseen by Kevin Shirley, whose catalogue of hit records for LED ZEPPELIN, IRON MAIDEN, AEROSMITH, JOURNEY and THE BLACK CROWES has made him one of the hottest producers that rock music has to offer. Shirley, who originally had the idea of putting Hughes and Bonamassa in a band after seeing them jamming together onstage in Los Angeles back in November 2009, is the group's unofficial "fifth member."
BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION's inception took place when Hughes and Bonamassa fused their styles on stage in Los Angeles in November 2009 for an explosive performance at Guitar Center's King Of The Blues event. With the help and guidance of Shirley, they further added to their rock lineage by recruiting Bonham and Sherinian.
BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION played two exclusive concerts in the U.K. last month. 1

Former GUNS N' ROSES Drummer STEVEN ADLER To Perform Entire 'Appetite For Destruction' Album On Upcoming TourAccording to Alex Grossi, QUIET RIOT guitarist and agent for the BTE Inc. (Bigg Time Entertainment) booking agency, former GUNS N' ROSES drummer Steven Adler has revived his ADLER'S APPETITE band and is planning to embark on a tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of GN'R's classic debut album, "Appetite For Destruction". He is expected to play the landmark LP in its entirety "plus other GN'R classics."
In a February 2017 interview with the "One On One With Mitch Lafon" podcast, Adler said that he wasn't interested in making any more albums with his namesake band (ADLER), which released an acclaimed debut, "Back From The Dead", in 2012. "Rock and roll doesn't sell," he said at the time. "Unless I get into a band that's already established, there's no point in doing it, dude. It's such a pain in the ass to fly all over the world, and you play little clubs or bars… Dude, I am so tired of driving up to the gig and going… I have pair of dice in my hand and I go, 'C'mon, seven. Let there be people here. C'mon!' I walk in and I go, 'Fuck! There's twenty people.' It's not the same. So unless I get in an established band, there's no point in doing it. There's no money. And my whole goal is to play for as many people as possible. Don't get me wrong — I love and appreciate playing for that one or ten or hundred people. I was thankful. But I wanna do it right."
During a recent appearance on on "Mom, It's Not Devil Music!", Adler said that his "heart was so broken" after he was fired from GUNS N' ROSES that he just "wanted to die." Adler, who was kicked out of the group in 1990 over his drug use, spoke about his dismissal, saying: "One day you're on top of the world, and the next day you're a nobody."
Adler said that, ironically, he was thrown out of the group while trying to kick his heroin habit. He recalled: "I didn't realize that if you're doing heroin and then you stop doing it, you get violently sick... it aches so bad and you just wanna die." He added, "Four days go by, and [GUNS guitarist] Slash called and said, 'Well, we're going in the studio to record 'Civil War'.'... So I go in at A&M Records to record, and I'm so weak and sick. And I did my best, but I had to play, like, 25 times. So they were getting frustrated. And I kept telling them, 'I'm sick.' And they kept saying, 'No, you're not. You're just fucked up.' And I said, 'I'm not fucked up. I'm sick.' And I got kicked out."
Adler said that after he was fired, he "went from having a management, roadies, a band, agent, accountants — people all around me all the time — that I thought were my friends and had my back to literally, one day, I was all alone. I had nobody. I thought for sure I was gonna be one of those rock stars that, when they're 27, they OD and die."
After being fired, Adler resolved to clean himself up, but admitted, "My heart was so broken that I couldn't even think about doing that. All I could think about was, 'I just wanna die.'"
Adler published an autobiography in 2010, titled "My Appetite for Destruction: Sex, And Drugs, And Guns N' Roses", in which he delved into his depression, suicide attempts, drug-related heart attacks, and the debilitating stroke that left him with muscular paralysis and permanently slurred speech.
Although not part of the reunion that launched in 2016, Adler rejoined GUNS N' ROSES at several shows on the band's "Not In This Lifetime" tour, including three stops on the U.S. leg and one gig in Buenos Aires, Argentina, playing drums on "Out Ta Get Me" and "My Michelle".
ADLER'S APPETITE is BACK...!

DISTURBED Re-Teams With Producer KEVIN CHURKODISTURBED has confirmed that it has returned to The Hideout Recording Studio in Las Vegas, Nevada with producer Kevin Churko to record its first new music since 2015's "Immortalized" album.
Prior to the arrival of "Immortalized", DISTURBED had been on hiatus since the fall of 2011, after completing the touring cycle for its previous studio effort, "Asylum", and issuing a rarities collection called "The Lost Children".
Singer David Draiman revealed a year ago that DISTURBED would record an acoustic EP before the band begins work on the follow-up to "Immortalized".
It is not presently clear if DISTURBED's current studio sessions are for an acoustic release or if those plans have been abandoned in favor of a full-length electric effort.
"Immortalized", which was the first DISTURBED album produced by Churko, became the band's fifth LP to enter The Billboard 200 chart at No. 1 — a feat shared only with METALLICA and DAVE MATTHEWS BAND.
In a 2016 interview with For Guitar Players Only, DISTURBED guitarist Dan Donegan spoke about Churko's contributions to "Immortalized". He said: "We took some meetings with some big-name producers, just to see what they had to offer. It was just a great, eye-opening experience to know that there's some geniuses that can kind of challenge you and throw these ideas out. When we met with Kevin Churko, we just felt something within the first hour, two hours that we were bouncing ideas off each other. It was pretty obvious that he just seemed like the right fit for us. We just felt like some of the suggestions he threw at us definitely helped elevate those songs to make them even hookier and riffier. It was just amazing. I didn't really want to leave the studio. After nearly three and a half, four months of recording, I was a little sad when we were done. It just felt like, creatively, 'Ah, man, I still want to keep going,' but we already felt like we had such a strong album."
DISTURBED has been confirmed as one of the headliners of the 25th annual Rock Fest, set to take place July 12-15 in Cadott, Wisconsin.

New Lineup Of EXHORDER Performs In New York (Video)The new lineup of the legendary American thrash metal band EXHORDER made its official live debut last night (Friday, February 9) at the St. Vitus Bar in Brooklyn, New York. Fan-filmed video footage can be seen below (courtesy of Chucky Browns Hood TV).
EXHORDER now features founding members Vinnie LaBella (guitar) and Kyle Thomas (vocals) along with Jason Viebrooks (HEATHEN) on bass, Marzi Montazeri (ex-SUPERJOINT RITUAL, PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS) on guitar and Sasha Horn (FORBIDDEN) on drums.
Thomas told The Metal Crypt that "it's really kind of odd" how the EXHORDER reformation happened. "We had been gradually talking again after many years of not seeing each other too much, and one night we were at a Corey Feldman concert, of all places," he said. "It just kind of popped up where we were like, 'Do you want to?' and the other guy said, 'Yeah, sure.' It was just about that boring."
Thomas also talked about EXHORDER's latest additions, explaining: "Jason has been a friend of ours since the '90s, and he has a long history of being involved with EXHORDER. It always seemed like he was around right before we broke up, so maybe he is the problem. [Laughs] Seriously though, Jason and Vinnie started YEAR OF THE TYRANT with Sasha Horn, which Dan Nelson [formerly of ANTHRAX] has now joined. Marzi invited me to collaborate with him in HEAVY AS TEXAS and we played one show last year. We are currently recording an album together. Marzi jumped on board recently, and the two bands kind of merged into an EXHORDER reformation. Weird, but it will be amazing."
EXHORDER is planning on making several festival appearances during the summer. The band will also play a homecoming show in New Orleans at Southport Hall on February 12.
Kyle confirmed that if the upcoming shows go well, there are plans for EXHORDER to play more concerts and possibly even work on new music. "We are going to gauge the interest level before we go crazy booking a lot of shows, but the more we get into this, the more it seems likely that a lot will happen with new material eventually surfacing," he said. "It's pretty exciting having it unfold before our eyes." As for what a new EXHORDER album may sound like, Kyle said: "We would want it to be deserving of the EXHORDER logo on the front of anything we release. We owe that to the EXHORDER fanbase. We owe that to ourselves also. I have a pretty good feeling it will not disappoint."
EXHORDER relased two albums in the early 1990s through the Roadrunner label — 1990's "Slaughter in the Vatican" and 1992's "The Law" — before breaking up, with Kyle going on to form FLOODGATE and also briefly appearing live as the vocalist for TROUBLE, which he later joined on a full-time basis (and is still a member of).
EXHORDER is cited by many as the originators of the riff-heavy power-groove approach popularized by PANTERA.

NIGHTWISH's TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN Has Written Six Songs For Band's Next Album; 2020 Release Date ExpectedTuomas Holopainen says that he has written six new songs for NIGHTWISH's next studio album, marking the first material he has composed for the band in four years.
After NIGHTWISH completed a world tour in support of its latest album, 2015's "Endless Forms Most Beautiful", the band announced that it would take 2017 off to focus on family life and other projects. NIGHTWISH has since revealed its next project: a nine-month-long "Decades: World Tour 2018" starting in March with 34 shows in North America, featuring a very special setlist, consisting of rarely heard material from the group's earlier era.
Earlier this month, Holopainen made an appearance on Finland's Radio Rock to promote the debut album from his AURI project. Speaking about how working on the record — which sees him teamed up with his wife, popular Finnish singer Johanna Kurkela, and English composer and multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley (also of NIGHTWISH) — reignited his passion for songwriting and music, the keyboardist said: "I don't wanna sound like a suffering artist or any of that cliché nonsense. It's a thing I can't really explain, but since we got the previous NIGHTWISH album, 'Endless Forms Most Beautiful', finished, I just didn't feel like doing music, doing NIGHTWISH. Even I didn't listen to music that much, so something was gone. And I think it has to do with the fact that we were really content with the previous album, the last song, 'The Greatest Show On Earth'. It was, like, 'Yeah, this is it. Or is this it?' And for about a year and a half, I didn't feel like doing music, especially for NIGHTWISH. But then, when we got the AURI album finished last September, I decided to give NIGHTWISH songwriting another shot, and then all heavens broke loose. [Laughs] So that means, [for] about four months [now], I've been just immersed with NIGHTWISH again, and I feel really happy and excited and inspired about it, because it's been lost for such a long time. So I have six songs done now, and there's gonna be a lot more to come. But this year is gonna be spent touring with the 'Decades', and there's only so much you can do, songwriting-wise, while you're on tour. So it's gonna take the bigger part of 2019 to get the songs done, and then rehearse them, go to the studio. So 2020, maybe, the next album — it's not gonna happen before that. But things are looking really good, at least inside of my own head."
Nuclear Blast will celebrate NIGHTWISH's two-decade anniversary by releasing a two-CD compilation titled "Decades" on March 9.
NIGHTWISH singer Floor Jansen and SABATON drummer Hannes Van Dahl welcomed their first child, a daughter named Freja, in March 2017.
In 2016, Jansen shot down speculation that NIGHTWISH's decision to take a year-long break had something to do with tension between members of the group.
AURI will release its self-titled debut album on March 23 via Nuclear Blast. 7

OVERKILL Frontman On SLAYER's 'Final' Tour: 'If They're Done, They're Done'OVERKILL frontman Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth says that he respects SLAYER's decision to call it quits, calling it an "individual choice" that is "their business" and not anyone else's.
Last month, SLAYER, one of metal's most popular and influential bands of the past four decades, announced its "final world tour" via a 30-second video. The group also confirmed that its last-ever North American run of dates would feature support from LAMB OF GOD, ANTHRAX, BEHEMOTH and TESTAMENT.
In an interview with Sticks For Stones, Ellsworth was asked how felt about SLAYER pulling the plug on an impressive three-and-a-half-decade career. "Oh, man, I don't make decisions for other people," he responded (hear audio below). "People should do what they wanna do. If they're done, they're done. They know better than I know. It's all about individual choice. I mean, they're cool guys. I just saw Gary [Holt, SLAYER and EXODUS guitarist] out in Los Angeles last weekend [at the NAMM show] — I did a METAL ALLEGIANCE song with him or two — and I never even brought it up, because, again, that's their business. So it's really not something that goes through my mind — 'How strange is this?' or 'How weird is this?' or 'Oh, no.' I don't think in those terms. I've always paid attention to my own porch and my own house as opposed to that of others."
SLAYER will kick off the first leg of its farewell world tour with a May 10 concert at San Diego's Valley View Casino Center, with dates running through June 20 at Austin's 360 Amphitheatre.
OVERKILL has just returned to the studio to resume work on demos for its upcoming album. According to a post on the band's Facebook page, at least four new songs are in varying stages of completion at this point, with more to come.
OVERKILL last year announced the addition of drummer Jason Bittner (SHADOWS FALL, FLOTSAM AND JETSAM) to the group's ranks.

EUROPE Wins Swedish GRAMMIS Award For 'Walk The Earth'EUROPE was honored in the "Best Hard Rock/Metal" category at the Swedish Grammis awards (Swedish Grammy equivalent), which was held Thursday night (February 8) at Grand Hôtel in Stockholm.
The bands were nominated for their most recent releases, all of which came out during 2017.
"Best Hard Rock/Metal" nominees were as follows:
* ARCH ENEMY - "Will To Power"
* EUROPE - "Walk The Earth"
* H.E.A.T. - "Into The Great Unknown"
* THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA - "Amber Galactic"
* VAMPIRE - "With Primeval Force"
"Walk The Earth" was released last October via EUROPE's own Hell & Back label through Silver Lining Music. The follow-up to 2015's "War Of Kings" was laid down at London, England's legendary Abbey Road studios and was produced by Dave Cobb, who also helmed the band's previous disc.
Speaking about EUROPE's musical evolution leading up to the release of "Walk The Earth", drummer Ian Haugland told the "Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon" podcast: "I think when we set out in 2004 to reunite and start the new journey, we said that we needed to let the music be the inspiration — not just trying to get a radio hit song or whatever but always to let the inspiration and the music be the guiding light, basically let the music take us to wherever it leads us. So the music is leading the way, and it's been like that since [2004's] 'Start From The Dark'. And we've been exploring different paths and different inspirations.
"I remember early on, with 'Start From The Dark', we were pretty much into AUDIOSLAVE and VELVET REVOLVER and bands like that," he continued. "Then we went a little bit into the bluesier kind of vibe when we discovered Joe Bonamassa and BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION. So we've been swaying between different styles. But I would say that [2015's] 'War Of Kings' and 'Walk The Earth' definitely have been more focused on the same path. I think we're very much exploring our inspirations and roots from the '70s — you know, DEEP PURPLE, [LED] ZEPPELIN, BLACK SABBATH, all those beautiful bands that we grew up [on], all the bands that were the starting point for us playing music as teenagers.
"We're trying less to not sound like our idols from the '70s," Haugland added. "The fact that we are inspired by these bands shows in the music. And I think by doing that, by not trying so hard to do, or not do, something, the music just flows naturally, and we have a relaxed attitude towards the songwriting process, especially with 'War Of Kings' and 'Walk The Earth', that we produced with Dave Cobb, the producer."
"Walk The Earth" features original artwork by famed Los Angeles artist Mike Sportes of Filth Mart.

Letters From The Colony build upon the intersection between perfection and ordered chaos; the unbridled joy of experimentation and virtuosic instrument mastery and create their new niche compartment of technically challenging extreme metal. They deliver highly complex songs full of unbound aggression and progressive structures in the vein of Meshuggah, Opeth and Gojira, and also do not shy away from playing saxophone with a guitar or sampling the call of a deer into a track!
Letters From The Colony are:
Alexander Backlund - Vocals
Sebastian Svalland - Guitar
Johan Jönsegård - Guitar
Emil Östberg - Bass
Jonas Sköld - Drums

FOGHAT Bassist CRAIG MACGREGOR Dies At 68FOGHAT bassist Craig MacGregor died earlier today (Friday, February 9) after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 68 years old.
"On behalf of Craig MacGregor's family and the FOGHAT family, it is with great sadness that we are letting you know that we have lost our brother, good friend, husband, father and bandmate this morning," the band wrote on Facebook. "He passed peacefully in his wife Lisa MacGregor's arms after a prolonged battle with cancer. Please respect the privacy of the family and band members at this time. We will be sharing information in the next day or so. Rest in peace, Thunderfingers."
MacGregor, who joined FOGHAT in 1975, stopped performing with the band after being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2015, but remained an official member until his death. He underwent aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatments but was no longer able to play because his fingers had become "clubbed," a deformation related to his illness.
"Oh my gosh, this has been devastating," Lisa MacGregor told The Morning Call in a 2016 interview. "Music is all he's done. It's his passion. It's his second family… It has been very hard for him."
FOGHAT released its debut album in 1971 and immediately hit the charts with "I Just Want To Make Love To You". The band gained momentum throughout the decade, releasing several hit albums, including 1977's double platinum "Foghat Live".
FOGHAT's current touring lineup consists of Roger Earl on drums, Charlie Huhn on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Bryan Bassett on lead guitar and Rodney O'Quinn on bass.
The band is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its 1978 album "Stone Blue".
FOGHAT's most recent release was 2016's "Under The Influence".
Two original members of FOGHAT passed away in the last two decades: singer/guitarist Lonesome Dave Peverett in 2000, and original lead guitarist Rod Price in 2005.
On behalf of Craig MacGregor's family and the Foghat family, it is with great sadness that we are letting you know that...

DUKES OF THE ORIENT Feat. JOHN PAYNE And ERIK NORLANDER: 'Seasons Will Change' Video"Seasons Will Change", the new video from DUKES OF THE ORIENT, can be seen below. The song is taken from the band's self-titled debut album, which will be released on February 23 via Frontiers Music Srl.
What do you get when you match a Brit from London who loves American AOR with an American from California who grew up on British prog? DUKES OF THE ORIENT is the masterful pairing of vocalist John Payne (ex-ASIA, GPS) with keyboardist Erik Norlander (LAST IN LINE, LANA LANE) who now present their eponymous debut album, ten years in the making.
"With DUKES OF THE ORIENT, we have dug deep with analog soundscapes, superlative musicians and song-driven epics," says Payne. "Add to this the masterful artwork of Rodney Matthews and a journey that started with the supergroup ASIA, we give you the next chapter, one we are extremely proud of."
Payne's powerful arena-seasoned vocals carry soaring melodies and lush harmonies over the sea of classic synthesizers and keyboards artfully painted with Norlander's signature sonic palette.
The two are backed by a world-renowned ensemble of top musicians including Jeff Kollman, Guthrie Govan, Moni Scaria and Bruce Bouillet on guitars and Jay Schellen on drums. Payne provides bass guitar and additional lead and rhythm guitar parts to complete the audiophile production. The album was mixed on a traditional analog console to preserve and enhance the natural depth, clarity and soul of the tracks with great care taken to avoid over-compression, extreme equalization and distortion.
DUKES OF THE ORIENT has its origins in 2007 as ASIA FEATURING JOHN PAYNE, a band that continued on after ASIA keyboardist Geoff Downes left to reform the original 1982 lineup. Payne recruited Norlander to join Guthrie Govan and Jay Schellen for tour dates in the U.S. and initial recordings, some of which endured to appear on the DUKES OF THE ORIENT album here. Govan left the band to form THE ARISTOCRATS and was replaced by guitarist Bruce Bouillet followed by Jeff Kollman and Moni Scaria. The final lineup resulted in the track "Seasons Will Change", released as a video in 2013 and also now appears on the DUKES OF THE ORIENT album. Following the death of original ASIA vocalist John Wetton in early 2017, Payne and Norlander decided that these recordings should give birth to a new band, both out of respect for Wetton and for clarity with the Downes-led ASIA.
Track listing:

02. Strange Days

04. Time Waits For No One
05. A Sorrow's Crown
06. Fourth Of July

BARREN EARTH Feat. KREATOR Guitarist SAMI YLI-SIRNIÖ: 'A Complex Of Cages' Album Due In MarchFinnish progressive death metal band BARREN EARTH, which features in its ranks guitarist Sami Yli-Sirniö (KREATOR, WALTARI), will release its new album, "A Complex Of Cages", on March 30 via Century Media. The follow-up to 2015's "On Lonely Towers" was recorded at Woodshed Studios with producer Victor Bullok (a.k.a. V. Santura).
The disc's first single, "Further Down", can be streamed below.
Vocalist Jón Aldará comments: "For me, this truly feels like a transcendental album for us. The songwriting dynamics have changed quite drastically since 'On Lonely Towers', and even though every song is quite unmistakably BARREN EARTH, the album as a whole brings us towards something stranger. Lyrically, the album follows a theme that fits the instability of the music, namely the isolating aspect of suffering from different mental issues such as manic depression, psychopathy and agoraphobia."
Bassist Olli-Pekka Laine adds: "Like BARREN EARTH's previous works, the album's material varies from straightforward standards to experimental opuses. Still, the red line is there, and every song asserts its place in the whole. Brutal death metal, artsy prog rock, pompous melodies with dozens of layers... This music has been crafted without any external pressure, radiating utter spiritual liberation. Production-wise I see 'A Complex Of Cages' as an improved version of BARREN EARTH, thanks to V. Santura, who supervised the album making process and let us concentrate solely on composing, arranging and performing."
"Further Down" is available as a digital single on all download and streaming platforms and as an instant-grat track on iTunes and Amazon.
BARREN EARTH is:
Marko Tarvonen - Drums
Olli-Pekka Laine - Bass
Antti Myllynen - Keyboards
Jón Aldará - Vocals
Sami Yli-Sirniö - Lead guitars
Janne Perttilä - Rhythm guitars 2

IGNORE THE SIGN Premier "Days Of Thunder" Music VideoIgnore The Sign, the new Hannover, Germany-based band surrounding vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Ossy Pfeiffer, guitarist/vocalist Anca Graterol (Rosy Vista) and MSG guitarist Steve Mann, will release their debut album, A Line To Cross, on February 23rd. Pre-order here. A video for the track "Days Of Thunder" can be seen below.
In this song, the Hanoverians emphasize that hard rock music still has a serious home base in this city! The content is about the good old days - those "Days Of Thunder" in the youth in which handmade music and "making party" were capitalized and bands like the Scorpions, Victory or Thunderhead went out to write history!
The group also includes Lars Lehmann, renowned as studio bassist with British rock legend UFO and member of ex-Scorpions guitarist Uli Jon Roth’s band, as well as percussionist Momme Boe and Eloy-drummer Kristof Hinz.
Ignore The Sign has unmistakably benefited from its members’ wide range of different influences. A self-professed Beatles fan, Ossy Pfeiffer (“following Johann Sebastian Bach, The Beatles are the origin of music to me”) is responsible for the material’s great melodiousness and catchiness, with Anca Graterol adding colour and spiritedness to the arrangements. Steve Mann brought along a tougher, almost metal-oriented guitar attitude. The multi-faceted style and unerring feel for bouncing funk grooves of bassist (and lead vocalist on the song "God") Lars Lehmann brings to mind the early Whitesnake musician Neil Murray, while the rhythm section surrounding Kristof Hinz and Momme Boe contributed the songs’ dynamics and polyrhythms.
You can feel that this band brings a breath of fresh air to the scene, consisting of a wide range of different talents and blending extensive musical experience into a homogenous musical whole. Ignore The Sign points the way with its uncompromising commitment to traditional classic rock music that couldn’t be more timeless.
Album artwork by Tristan Greatrex (UFO, Vinnie Moore, etc.).

RICHIE SAMBORA And ORIANTHI Release Two New Songs For Valentine's DayGuitarists Richie Sambora (BON JOVI) and Orianthi (Michael Jackson, Alice Cooper), who are both a real-life couple and creative partners, have released two romantic songs just in time for Valentine's Day: an original track called "Forever All the Way" and a cover version of Sonny & Cher's 1965 hit "I Got You Babe". Both songs will appear on the debut album from their RSO project, which is due in April.
"'I Got You Babe' is one of the best duets of all time and it’s a song that reminds us that true affection has no limitations," Sambora told People. "Ori and I loved paying homage to this timeless SONNY & CHER classic."
RSO recently released a five-track EP called "Rise".
Sambora and Orianthi first met in Hawaii in 2013. Sambora was vacationing there and was asked by his old friend Alice Cooper to join him onstage at a charity show. Orianthi had been Cooper's guitarist since 2011. "Alice and I are sitting in the audience while the band is rehearsing and I said, 'Who's that?'" Richie recalled. "And he said, 'That's Ori. She's played with Michael Jackson.'"
"We just hit it off straight away," Orianthi said. "We started jamming out and it was really great. Afterward Richie invited me to come hang out and we started writing and the chemistry was just there."
"From the first time we were onstage, it was so powerful," Sambora said. "It felt inevitable that something was going to happen. I, personally, knew in my heart, after that first time we played together that it wasn't going to be the end."
Two months later, Sambora invited Orianthi to join him on a festival tour of her native Australia and later Europe. The two traveled together, performing and feverishly writing songs. "There was an airstrike in France and we had to drive eight hours in a van," Sambora recalled. "We got out the guitars and wrote three songs in the van. Ours is a true Bonnie and Clyde rock and roll kind of story."
Sambora and Orianthi eventually became a couple and now share a home in Los Angeles where they have built a recording studio in their kitchen, complete with studio-size speakers, keyboards, computers, and mics. There are amps in the dining room, the living room overflows with racks of guitars, and the home theater has been converted into a drum room. Most of the songs on "Rise" were recorded there over the past two years with songwriter/producer Bob Rock (METALLICA, BON JOVI).

OVERKILL Is Working On New MusicVeteran New Jersey thrashers OVERKILL have returned to the studio to resume work on demos for their upcoming album. According to a post on the band's Facebook page, at least four new songs are in varying stages of completion at this point, with more to come.
In a brand new interview with Australia's 3D Radio, OVERKILL frontman Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth stated about the band's songwriting and recording process: "Well, for us, coming from the old school, to some degree, it has to be physical. And what I mean by that is standing in a room with the others, splitting a pizza, splitting a beer, sweating, coming up with some good ideas, occasionally, or even more than occasionally, going, 'Oh my God! That sucked.' And then moving from there into what the modern era offers us, and that's the Pro Tools and trading files back and forth over the Internet, because instantaneous ideas can be traded from home now. So we use kind of a combination of the old 'let's sweat it out and tune the guitars up' to the modern day of 'let's get down with the computers and exchange our ideas.' So it works both ways for us. So it's a combination of the old and the new."
Ellsworth went on to say that OVERKILL has "adapted" to the new writing and recording techniques. "But," he added, "we've never abandoned the studio rehearsal space. That, to us, is necessary. I think it gives us a link to how we started. And I think there's something very humbling about saying, 'Sure, this was still worth it back then.' And to some degree, when you think of this type of music — metal in general, aggressive — I think it needs to be presented as a group, or understood as a group, as opposed to invididuals just coming up with ideas. So the combination really works for us. And I think this keeps us grounded."
OVERKILL's latest album, "The Grinding Wheel", was released in February 2017 via Nuclear Blast. The disc was produced by OVERKILL and mixed by Andy Sneap (MEGADETH, EXODUS, ACCEPT). The artwork was created again by Travis Smith (NEVERMORE, OPETH, SOILWORK, DEATH).
OVERKILL last year announced the addition of drummer Jason Bittner (SHADOWS FALL, FLOTSAM AND JETSAM) to the group's ranks.

NORTH HAMMER Releases Debut Track “Avatar”Created by Andrew James of Edmonton, AB’s Eye Of Horus and Shotgunner, his new project, one man folk metal band North Hammer is drawing inspiration from the mighty Quorthon; for Andrew is not so much a one-man band as a one-warrior metal machine. Andrew wrote and recorded the guitar, bass, vocals, and orchestration along with drums done by Doug Helcaraxë Nunez for North Hammer’s forthcoming debut album Stormcaller set for release on March 16th, 2018.
Andrew explains the significance of his band’s name.
“The ‘north’ part was a representation of the common theme winter that comes up in metal music, including folk metal. It is also a reference to my native Canada. ‘Hammer’ is a reference to Mjolnir, Thor’s Hammer!”
Inspired by Wintersun, Ensiferum, Amon Amarth, Aether Realm, Blind Guardian, Stormcaller is a 21st century continuation of the work of Norse bards with its melodic death metal folk riffs.
“The experience I’m trying to give the listeners is that of a fellow fan. I want people to be euphoric for other bands that mean something to them like Ensiferum, Wintersun and Amon Amarth. To connect personally with my music and realize that I love and worship these bands.” explains Andrew James.
Debut track “Avatar” is streaming below.
Andrew James comments:
"Avatar is a manifestation of a deity or released soul in bodily form on Earth; an incarnate divine teacher. This is the definition that I thought fit well for this song. This song is about battling the elements of scaling a giant mountain during blizzards and furious winds. The teacher and deity aspect of the hero shines through as he preserves and inspires other beyond their capacity."
While North Hammer is a studio project at the moment, Andrew James plans to put together a band of top-notch like-minded musicians for touring in Western Canada and beyond.

“Written In The Stars”
“Magic Mead”

REPRISAL To Release None Survive The Sun AlbumUK death thrashers Reprisal are hitting back hard following up from the debut release Ichneumanity. This March sees the release of a new album entitled None Survive The Sun and is sure to cement the South East England quartet's place in the UK underground.
Scheduled for release via Hostile Media on March 30th, bassist Theo Brooke explains, "for the past three years we’ve been toiling away, carefully crafting material for this full length. Following up our Ichneumanity EP, we this time made a conscious effort to implement more uplifting lyrical themes, fewer riffs, slower tempos, specifically NO guitar solos, and an altogether more streamlined, ‘mainstream metal’ sound... We have spectacularly failed."
None Survive The Sun finds Reprisal further pushing at the outer limits of their sonic identity, fleshing out a thrash backbone with death metal muscle, strong progressive tendencies and a solid sense of song-craft. The ten compositions set the backdrop for a unifying lyrical palette examining the futility of human endeavour, the brutality of nature and the inevitability of death.
Guitarist Oliver du Toit adds, "The album was recorded by ourselves and David Archer at Audio Empire throughout the Summer and Autumn of 2017, and our goal with the production was to capture both the heaviness and intricacy of our music in equal measure, whilst simultaneously preserving the organic sound of the band. It’s a true representation of where Reprisal are at creatively and artistically in 2018."
The artwork is the result of a collaboration with a British death metal art legend Dan Seagrave, the man responsible for iconic covers such as Morbid Angel’s Altars Of Madness, Suffocation’s Effigy Of The Forgotten, Entombed’s Left Hand Path and many more.
Tracklisting:
“Oxygen Crisis”
“Monomania”
“Cannibal Cosmos”
“Hammer Of Light”
“The Great Dying”
“Starmaker”
“The Patronarch”
“The Relic”
“Born Alien”

KALMAH To Release Palo Album In April; "Evil Kin" Lyric Video StreamingSpinefarm Records will releases Kalmah’s new album, Palo, on April 6th. A lyric video for the first single, “The Evil Kin”, can be found below. The album will be released on vinyl, CD, and digital formats. Pre-order here.
Antti Kokko states: “Almost 30 years of swamp madness and here we are today representing our 8th album with fishing tridents sharpened shiny. The album stands strongly on the very roots of Kalmah sound yet introduces fresh breath from the Swamplord’s tar-stained lungs. 'Evil Kin' as first single gives you riffs written back in 1991 blended with melodies of Kalmah today. It’s a perfect statement to show where we were and are right now.”
In a time when others in the melodic death metal genre increasingly lap up influences from more commercial and contemporary genres of music, Kalmah stays true to its roots of death metal, Finnish melodic heritage, cantankerous never-say-die attitude and themes of Northern nature and the folly of mankind. Palo presents its listeners with a set of songs that with their web of melodies and in-your-face aggression exemplify the band’s ongoing evolution towards becoming an international death metal powerhouse. Cover art by Niklas Sundin.
