Metal Hangar 18 reports that a building in the city of Kavarna, Bulgaria features a specially commissioned portrait of former NIGHTWISH singer Tarja Turunen painted onto it. The artist responsible for the Turunen piece is Jasen Nenkov, who has previously painted portraits of Klaus Meine (SCORPIONS), Ian Gillan (DEEP PURPLE), Ronnie James Dio (HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW) and Glenn Hughes (DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH) on various buildings in Kavarna.

DREAM THEATER singer James LaBrie's new solo album, "Static Impulse", will be released on September 28 via InsideOut Music. The CD marks LaBrie's first solo effort in over five years and is sure to please his legion of diehard fans, as well as win over many new devotees in the process.

Mixed and mastered by Jens Borgen (OPETH, KATATONIA), "Static Impulse" features LaBrie's longtime songwriting partner and keyboardist Matt Guillory; Peter Wildoer from Swedish thrashers DARKANE on drums and screaming vocals; Marco Sfogli on guitar; and Ray Riendeau (HALFORD) on bass.

Commented LaBrie: "The release of 'Static Impulse' is one that the whole band is psyched about.

RockConfidential.com spoke with CHICKENFOOT bassist Michael Anthony (ex-VAN HALEN) recently about a number of topics. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

RockConfidential.com: It’s nice to see that Chickenfoot has taken on a life of it’s own and people realize it is definitely a “real” band and not just another supergroup. How did you guys see it when you first got together?

Anthony: "We didn’t even see doing a record. When we first got together about three years ago we had so much fun that we decided to go into the studio and do some writing and see what would come of this. It definitely wasn’t a supergroup thing where we picked out musicians to work with. I’ve known Chad Smith for years and I’ve jammed with Joe before. It was really just four friends with a little time to see what happens. We just wanted to get together and jam. We started writing stuff and it sounded great. Next thing you know we decided we needed to record what we were doing and then we got Andy Johns involved. Then we decided we should do a record. When you hear about “supergroups” you know they’ll record a CD and hit the big arenas and make a lot of cash and then shake hands and say goodbye. It wasn’t like that all. We want to have fun. We’ve all done our stuff in the past and we have absolutely nothing to prove. We’re just diggin’ the music we’re making."

RockConfidential.com: You said you’ll hit the studio in September. What have you been working on so far?

Anthony: "We’ve been bouncing some ideas back and forth. In April we were able to all get into the studio together. We went in to Sammy’s studio in San Francisco for about a week. During that week we had four things demoed up. There was one song Joe and Sammy had been working on but the other stuff … There were just so many ideas coming out. It’s definitely Chickenfoot. We’re not looking to change direction. Hopefully we’ll spend a lot more time in the studio as a band than we did on the last album. The schedules only gave us a few days here and there. I hope we have more time to work on stuff in the studio."

RockConfidential.com: What about doing a solo album? Your songs, your music, your vision. Think we’ll ever see anything like that?

Anthony: "Possibly, yes. I was starting to go that way before Chickenfoot. For a number of years I’ve been going out and playing with Sammy doing some of the Van Hagar era stuff. I don’t want to do that forever. Fortunately, Chickenfoot came up so that’s on hold. But thank God for that, because creatively we’re all doing what we want to do in Chickenfoot. I wouldn’t say I won’t do something like that in the future."

According to The Pulse of Radio, details about the upcoming Kurt Cobain biopic remain scant, but the film's director promises, "It'll be raw and chaotic, which is what Cobain's life was like." Writer-director Oren Moverman tells the U.K.'s Guardian, "People know the shortcut version — he took a lot of heroin, wrote 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', became the biggest rock star in the world and killed himself. Those known things about him are to me the least interesting."

The late NIRVANA singer's widow, Courtney Love, is involved in the making of the film, serving as executive producer. Although rumors have circulated, there's still no word on who will play Cobain. According to Spin.com, Love's manager says the HOLE singer "likes Scarlett Johanssen as an actress and as a person, so it wouldn't surprise me if she wanted her to play her."

The script is written for the film, which is partially based on the biography "Heavier Than Heaven" by Charles R. Cross.

ZODIAC MINDWARP & THE LOVE REACTION will release its new album, "We Are Volsung", in North America on October 12 via SPV/Steamhammer. A U.S. tour will follow in January/February 2011.

Inspired by northern mythology ZODIAC MINDWARP & THE LOVE REACTION's new album features 10 brand-new unadulterated songs, including a track with the German title "Stark Von Oben".

ZODIAC MINDWARP & THE LOVE REACTION's story starts in the year 1985: In a musical world of hairspray and spandex, two long-haired, leather-clad rockers were introduced to each other by their "exotic dancer" girlfriends. One, a graphic artist and poet, the other, a budding philosopher. They immediately dropped everything, joined forces and created the dirtiest, wildest band of all time. One year later, they signed to Polygram, released, the groundbreaking "High Priest of Love" EP, and subsequently the "Tattooed Beat Messiah" album, containing the well received single "Prime Mover".

Overnight, they accidentally changed the look of all the rock bands of the time from the obligatory spandex, eye liner and tinsel, to rough biker jackets, engineer boots and goatees. MÖTLEY CRÜE declared them to be their favorite band and immediately restyled themselves for the "Girls, Girls, Girls" record.

ZODIAC MINDWARP & THE LOVE REACTION grew in notoriety, touring the world and America, co-headlining arenas and theaters with GUNS N' ROSES and found themselves at home playing festivals and baseball stadiums with IRON MAIDEN. After attending a ZODIAC MINDWARP & THE LOVE REACTION concert at the Hammersmith Odeon and giving it his seal of approval, Alice Cooper took to the studio and recorded the ZODIAC MINDWARP tune "Feed My Frankenstein", which was later performed in the film "Wayne's World"... The critical acclaim of ZODIAC MINDWARP & THE LOVE REACTION did, however, cause some rare misfortune, when they lost their young naive bass player to the lures of THE CULT. The band soldiered on regardless. Sometime later, in Paris, Slam Thunderhide, their drummer, decided to put down his sticks to become a go-go dancer in Vancouver.

Present day: With "The Cat" shaking the Earth on drums and "Jack Shitt" rumbling the low frequencies, they ride again, honing their skills playing for the Viking descendants in Scandinavia. From these tough, manly ordeals, a new set of recordings have been forged. "We Are Volsung" is the result, a celebration in the Norse tradition. 10 songs of pure unadulterated rock.

"Supernatural", the new video from French metallers DARKNESS DYNAMITE, can be viewed below. The song comes off the band's debut album, "The Astonishing Fury Of Mankind", which was released in June 2009 via Metal Blade Records . The CD was recorded at several French studios with experienced people at the helm. Stéphane Buriez (LOUDBLAST, BLACK BOMB A, L’ESPRIT DU CLAN) recorded the guitars at Elektricbox Studio. As part of the ongoing celebration of their 20th anniversary, Swedish progressive metallers OPETH will release live footage and audio from the band's recent performance at London's famed Royal Albert Hall. "In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall", due on September 21 via Roadrunner Records, is a fierce testament to OPETH's continued success in the progressive metal community.

Twenty years and nine records into their legendary career, OPETH's "progressively creative spirit" (ARTISTdirect) remains unwavering, propelling the band through the "Evolution XX: An Opeth Anthology" tour, which brought the Swedish titans to six of the world's most unique venues, and now, with the release of "In Live Concert At The Royal Albert Hall", into the homes of their fans.

The performance at the Royal Albert Hall (recorded on April 5, 2010) includes two sets, the first consisting of the band performing 2000's now-classic, breakthrough epic "Blackwater Park" in its entirety, and the second, a chronologically arranged selection of material from the rest of OPETH's extensive catalogue, totaling almost three hours of music. It is, like the rest of OPETH's greatest work, "purposefully warped in all the right places" (Decibel). The front cover artwork concept pays tribute to DEEP PURPLE's "Concerto for Group and Orchestra", underlining the band's longstanding love for their prog-rock roots.

Thinking back to the concert, frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt says "OPETH had a magical night playing the Royal Albert Hall. It was a dream come true, and now afterwards, it still feels like a dream. We got it all on film, and this, our third live recording and DVD, might be my personal favorite.

Finnish/Swedish symphonic metallers NIGHTWISH are in "the deepest countryside of Finland" working on material for their new studio album, which they will begin to record on October 15 for a late 2011 release.

Commented keyboardist/mainman Tuomas Holopainen: "The first week is almost through and we're off to a fantastic start. Jukka [Nevalainen, drums], Emppu [Vuorine, guitar] and me have five songs rehearsed so far. Marco [Hietala, bass/vocals] joined the camp last night after a couple of festival shows he did with TAROT.

"We'll start putting the low ends into those songs later today and maybe try out tune #6.

"The first song put together ended up having one of the best choruses we've ever had and a classic NIGHTWISH-y c-part of heavy guitars, a massive string riff and everything louder than anything and everybody playing with full force at the same time.

"Trademark stuff.

"Song # 2 is a twisted marriage of VAN HALEN, PANTERA and madhouse vocals. And Quentin Tarantino guitars in the bridge.

"We weren't overly bananas over this one after the demo I made alone, but now it's finally coming alive.

"In between the distorted racket, we sat down with Emppu to complete one acoustic piece. A nice journey back to the roots! Sounds like a Moomin Valley Christmas carol.

"Then another song back to the roots. Everyone's surprise favorite at the moment. I dug up my inner PARADISE LOST / MY DYING BRIDE fanboy and this funeral march is the result.

"Music for the last song rehearsed so far is written by Marco. A wonderfully catchy track with the chorus repeated five times(!!). Must be some sort of a record for us. Nice acoustic themes and a d-part which doesn't quite still fit in.

"We'll enter The Haunted Mansion tomorrow."

AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry spoke to Andy Greene of RollingStone.com about the injuries he sustained last week in a motorcycle accident.

On July 15, Perry pulled his Ducati motorcycle up to a traffic light, waited until it turned green and then put the bike into gear. "Next thing I know, I'm on tarmac looking up at the sky," the AEROSMITH guitarist told RollingStone.com. "This woman behind me just didn't slow down at the light. She was going 25-30 miles per hour and just rear-ended me. Everything on the bike from the engine back is smashed up, but I don't even have a black and blue mark. I can't believe it. I'm just really lucky."

Within minutes the police and EMT arrived on the scene, and they insisted that Perry go to the hospital. "I definitely felt banged up," he said.

Doug Pinnick of KING'S X contributed bass and vocals to the song "Big Star", which is described by Young as "more straight-ahead — maybe if you think of uptempo AC/DC or THE CULT's 'Electric' (1987)-era stuff meets KING'S X. That's the general vibe of 'Big Star' — which is actually a vocal duet. Mr. Doug comes in on selected trade-off lines with Julie, especially in the chorus and the bridge and over the end."

Regarding how Doug Pinnick come to contribute bass and vocals to a HYDROGYN tune, Young said, "We're all huge fans of KING'S X, particularly Jeff Westlake and myself," Young explained. "And we're all friends with Michael Wagener, who produced the last two KING'S X albums (2005's 'Ogre Tones' and 2008's 'XV'). Michael connected us with Doug and he was definitely down for it. We sent him the basic track right away, and he loved 'Big Star'. Initially, we only asked him to contribute vocals, but the more I thought about it... Remember, James Lomenzo is playing on every track on 'Judgment'. I went back to James and said, 'We should probably have Doug play bass on this, which will make the whole thing a little bit of a bigger guest spot.' Also a major KING'S X fan, J-Lo was all about that. I asked Doug, and he was totally down for contributing the bass part. He laid his part down and it just sits in the track so well. His groove is amazing and it just really helped to lift 'Big Star' to exactly where it needs to be."

The first-ever Vegas Rocks! Magazine Awards will be held Sunday, August 22, 2010 and will take place inside the original home of rock, The Elvis Showroom at the Las Vegas Hilton. Honoring local and legendary rock artists, the show, themed "I Wanna Rock," will feature an all-star jam capped off with a performance by TWISTED SISTER frontman Dee Snider.

The event marks the six year anniversary of Vegas Rocks! magazine and will be Las Vegas' own first real rock awards show, hosted by the "Publishing Queen of Rock n Roll" and Vegas Rocks! magazine founder/CEO, Sally Steele.

Montreal technical death metallers BENEATH THE MASSACRE have set "Marée Noire", as the title of their forthcoming EP, due in North America on September 14 via Prosthetic Records. The follow-up to 2008's "Dystopia" was co-produced by Chris Donaldson, known for his work with CRYPTOPSY, along with BENEATH THE MASSACRE guitarist Chris Bradley and the rest of the band. It was mixed by Donaldson and mastered by Alan Douches (HATEBREED, SHADOWS FALL, CONVERGE).

Commented Bradley: "'Marée Noire' was written using a different approach than the preceding release. We wouldn't start the writing process from the same point. Some songs were more structured by melodies while others all started from drums pattern. I think it makes the songs stand out a little more."

Vocalist Elliot Desgagnes added: "The tones are a little rawer and it helped a lot that Donaldson and Bradley already worked together in the past.

"We were all on the same page and everything went well in studio.

"I really like the EP format. It's easier lyrically to make connections between the songs and follow a thought pattern.

"We named the EP 'Marée Noire', 'Black Tide' in English, because I was writing lyrics on Absurdism, self-fulfilled prophecy and corporations raping everything, when BP started to shit in the Gulf of Mexico."

SLIPKNOT drummer Joey Jordison (ROB ZOMBIE, MURDERDOLLS) was interviewed by Fuse TV's Mistress Juliya during a stop on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival.

In response to a question of whether there will be another Slipknot album in the wake of the passing of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray, Joey states: "Absolutely. I just wanna thank all the fans for their support on my loss. But there will be another record for sure."

"Metalmorphosized", the new album from Danish metallers IRON FIRE, will be released on the following dates:

IRON FIRE will record a song for the upcoming VIRGIN STEELE tribute album, "By The Gods: A Noble Tribute To Virgin Steele".

Tampa, Florida melodic thrashers THE ABSENCE will release their third album, "Enemy Unbound", on September 14 via Metal Blade Records. The CD was once again recorded at the Erik Rutan-owned Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida in November 2009, with Brian Elliott engineering and Peter Joseph and Patrick Pintavalle producing. Going along with the saying "If it's not broke, don't fix it," the band tapped Jonas Kjellgren (SCAR SYMMETRY, CARNAL FORGE) of Black Lounge Studios in Sweden to handle both mixing and mastering on "Enemy Unbound". Guest musicians on the CD include Tom Englund of EVERGREY and Andy Wood.

In other news, original drummer and one of the founding members of THE ABSENCE, Jeramie Kling, has rejoined the band. Jeramie and THE ABSENCE parted ways after a completing a heavy touring schedule for the band's first CD, "From Your Grave".

Commented guitarist Patrick Pintavalle: "We're so glad to have Jeramie back in the band. It feels right again." Vocalist Jamie Stewart added: "In spite of everything that's been said and done, I'm glad to have my brother back. I look forward to having our collective magic restored."

Jeramie had this to say about once again stepping behind the kit for THE ABSENCE: "It's great to be back, I missed all my old friends. I can't wait to play the new songs on tour; they are going to blow the roof off. I missed the road and I can't wait to see all our fans out on tour. I am so pumped; it's just great to back."
