JUDAS PRIEST Singer: Next Album Will Be \'A Straightforward, Good Solid Piece Of Heavy Metal\'
Christina Fuoco-Karasinski of SoundSpike recently conducted an interview with singer Rob Halford of British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.
On the band's farewell "Epitaph" tour:
Halford: "I think one of the things that we seriously considered was how to maintain the longevity of PRIEST, and one of the ways of doing that is just to cut back a little bit on these intense tours that we do. We're still going to stay focused on recording and writing new songs; as you may have heard we have a new album coming out sometime next year. And [we will] do some more shows, but not on a lengthy touring basis. Maybe do festivals or special events — that kind of thing. I think, realistically, it guarantees the life of the band, rather than saying 'farewell,' 'goodbye, 'this is it.' I think it was important for us to send that message out to everyone that this was farewell to some aspects, because obviously there are certain parts of the world that we might not get back to ever again. That's why we're urging everybody to come and see us."
On JUDAS PRIEST's "Epitaph" tour setlist:
Halford: "We've tried, as best we can, to kind of go through as much of the significant material that we feel needs to be represented. So we are going from the first album to [2008's] 'Nostradamus' and everything in between. The songs are great. It felt good right from day one. We're leaving [the setlist] as it is. We're not going to mess with it. We open up with 'Rapid Fire' from 'British Steel', and we end the show with 'Living After Midnight'. Between the beginning and the end, it's two hours of heavy molten metal and the fans are just going crazy for it."
On JUDAS PRIEST's follow-up to the concept album "Nostradamus":
Halford: "It made absolute sense to be who we are and what we're renowned for, which is making the best heavy metal albums that we can. Our next record, when it's completed, will just be a traditional British heavy metal release, which obviously means there's going to be loads of riffs and screaming vocals and crazy guitars, lead breaks and all of the wonderful aspects that are loved about JUDAS PRIEST and heavy metal in general. It's going to be pretty much a straightforward, good solid piece of heavy metal that we're working on to release next year."
On new guitarist Richie Faulkner, who replaced K.K. Downing earlier this year:
Halford: "You never know how these things are going to turn out. Call it fate. Call it destiny. Through the channels we were working in, we had Richie proposed to us. We did what everybody does — jump on the Internet and see what's going on. Then it's a leap of faith, really. Richie came up to the Midlands and sat with Glenn [Tipton, guitar] and myself, and we talked and we talked. It was immediately — within the first hour or so — that this guy, in terms of personality, was going to be the one who could deal with what we were going to present him: 'You're going to stand on stage with JUDAS PRIEST and you're going to go on a world tour and all these other commitments.' It was straight into rehearsals. We knew the guy could play, but in terms of 'fitting in,' as it was called, it was just immediate. Absolutely immediate. [Faulkner] just slipped in there [during the 'American Idol' performance] as though it was waiting to happen. There was a tremendous sense of charisma and confidence. Of course, the next show that he played live with us was in Holland, where we started the European tour. Just an incredible talent, fabulous guitar player, tremendous personality on stage, can't take your eyes off of him. He loves playing his guitar. He loves JUDAS PRIEST. He loves heavy metal. What more could you ask for?"

GILBY CLARKE Would Take Part In GUNS N\' ROSES Reunion Only If SLASH Was Also Involved
During an audience question-and-answer session this past weekend at Rockmässan in Malmö, Sweden, former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Gilby Clarke was asked if he would consider taking part in a GN'R reunion if he were to be offered the opportunity (see video below). "I've always said if it's really a real reunion where [guitarist] Slash is involved, then I would do it, but I probably feel the same that you guys feel," Gilby replied. "I think most people wanna see the original five [members] — with Izzy [Stradlin, guitar] and Steven [Adler, drums] — and I agree; that was a great band. But if they want other people — myself and Matt [Sorum, drums], then I would do it. But I would only do it if Slash was involved."
GUNS N' ROSES is among 15 finalists for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Votes will be cast by a group of more than 500 musicians and industry professionals; of the 15 nominees, the five that get the most votes will be announced in January and inducted into the Hall Of Fame at its 27th annual ceremony on April 14, 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio, home to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame And Museum.
GUNS N' ROSES was nominated in its first year of eligibility.
"It's a great honor," Clarke told The Plain Dealer. "The band deserves it. It was a long time coming."
Acts become eligible 25 years after the release of their first record.

British Man Convicted Of Attempted Murder After Posing As BRING ME THE HORIZON Singer
According to the Daily Mail, a 20-year-old British man pretended to be BRING ME THE HORIZON frontman Oliver Sykes to lure an American woman he met on Facebook to a U.K. forest before slitting her throat and repeatedly stabbing her.
David Russell, 20, has been jailed for life for the calculated kidnap and attempted murder of Maricar Benedicto, 19, from California. He will serve a minimum of 17 and a half years in prison after being sentenced today (October 5) at Northampton Crown Court.
Prosecuting Queen's Counsel Christopher Donnellan told the court of Russell's actions, "He took her to an area of woodland off White Lane. He asked her to sit down on a fallen tree trunk and said he was going to blindfold her and said she would get a surprise or a present. He stood behind her, blindfolded her, asked her to put her head back, and her arms up. Although she did not see any implement because of the blindfold, the next thing she felt was her neck being sliced."
Benedicto then attempted to run away, but Russell caught up with her and stabbed her three further times. He then fled the scene, while Benedicto sought help in a nearby house.

New SOUNDGARDEN Album \'Doesn\'t Sound Like A Throwback\'
According to The Pulse Of Radio, SOUNDGARDEN singer Chris Cornell says in a new video interview with RollingStone.com (see below) that the band's first album in almost 16 years is "mostly done" and that it feels like the band "haven't missed a beat." Describing the "personality" of the new disc, Cornell said, "It's very warm to me and adventurous like all our albums were. It doesn't sound like a throwback to any previous period and we're definitely approaching songs in different ways than we've done... but we always did that from album to album so it feels like the genuine next step to me. It doesn't feel nostalgic, it feels forward."
Cornell said the new album should be out in the spring of 2012.
The vocalist also said he doesn't really know why it took the band 12 years to reunite, explaining, "I feel like SOUNDGARDEN can continue... and probably should have always had the attitude of being a formed functioning band that just needed a break. With SOUNDGARDEN my feeling always was that as long as it was a unanimous decision and everyone was really into it that it was always possible that we could get back together."
SOUNDGARDEN reunited last year after disbanding in 1997. The band's last album of all-new material was 1996's "Down On The Upside".

SUSPERIA To Release \'We Are The Ones\' In November
Norwegian metallers SUSPERIA will release a CD celebrating their 10-year anniversary as a recording artist, "We Are The Ones", on November 11. According to a press release, "This album marks 10 years of releases, and at the same time a nice end of a circle where Mustis (ex-DIMMU BORGIR), who participated on SUSPERIA's first demo in 1999, now returns after 12 years to once again put his magical touch on new, as well as old songs. A very fruitful cooperation which now has led to some fantastic re-recordings of some very popular, classic songs, now in complete symphonic versions. A brand new song has been recorded, with a massive orchestral theme. The contribution to this year's Eurovision Song Contest is of course featured. And to round up a celebratory album of this magnitude the right way, here it is finally, the entire infamous demo recording from 1999; 'Illusions Of Evil'! Remastered and officially released for the very first time. Øyvind 'Mustis' Mustaparta has been a guest musician in the band for a period of six months, and the result of this junction is finally ready. Really just a huge celebration of the longtime brotherhood of the band, and an even bigger thank you to the devoted fans worldwide. What contributes to making this album so special now is the fact that SUSPERIA, in their 12-year existence, have had the same lineup of members, without exception. This is very rare, and quite special not only in the metal genre, but in the whole music industry in general. Especially within bands consisting of five or more members. This will also be vocalist Athera's first release with SUSPERIA since the near-fatal heart attack in March 2009, and the subsuquent open-heart surgery."
"We Are The Ones" track listing:
01. We Are The Ones (new song composed with Mustis, 2011)
02. Devil May Care (orchestral version, 2011) (originally from "Unlimited", 2004)

1999 "Illusions Of Evil" demo remastered:
06. The Hellchild (demo version, 1999) (re-recorded on "Predominance", 2001)

JAMES HETFIELD: \'Lulu\' Is \'Not The New METALLICA Studio Record\'
METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield was interviewed by the Argentinian radio station Rock & Pop 95.9 FM before the band's performance at the Rock In Rio festival in on September 25, 2011 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. You can now listen to the chat below.
(Hetfield's answers below were transcribed from the original audio by BLABBERMOUTH.NET.)
On how METALLICA's collaboration with former VELVET UNDERGROUND frontman Lou Reed came about:
Hetfield: "Well, at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, we jammed with him on the 25th-year anniversary, and after the playing, he felt so good, he felt so alive that backstage there were some friends of his coming up to us and saying, 'What did you do to him? We've never seen him smile so much.' And then he just yelled down the hallway as we were leaving, 'We should do a record together.' And we thought, 'Yeah, right. Is he talking to us?' [Laughs] But he was serious. He had told us that we're the band he always wanted to have. And I agreed — METALLICA is the band I always wanted to have as well. [Laughs]"
On some METALLICA fans' concern that the band's collaborative album with Lou Reed, "Lulu", will sound nothing like the METALLICA they know and love:
Hetfield: "It's definitely different. This is not the new METALLICA studio record. This is 'Lulu'. And that's why we named it 'Lulu' — it's not METALLICA [and] it's not Lou Reed; it's us together making something called 'Lulu'. I'm sure there's some METALLICA fans that will think that 'This is the new METALLICA record. I don't like it. I'm scared.' And it's not. This is a project that was presented to us that we wanted to challenge ourselves with. I mean, there's some great riffs on there. There's not a lot of singing from me on it. [It's] Lou and his lyrics, with us writing background music for Lou. So that's what we did. There will be fans that it will be difficult for them to understand, but we can't stop being METALLICA, we can't stop exploring what we wanna do as an artist. We don't like limiting ourselves. But we're not doing it just to mess with the fans; that's for sure. If they don't like it, wait until the next record where we're fully focused on METALLICA, which we're actually writing right now."
On METALLICA lead guitarist Kirk Hammett's recent revelation that he and Hetfield were both brought to tears during the sessions for "Lulu" while they were recording a song called "Junior Dad":
Hetfield: "[Kidding around] Yeah, Lou, he dropped his guitar on my foot and I started crying. [Gets serious] No… It was just a moment. When music moves you in a certain way, and I was totally shocked by it. Lou came out and said, 'Oh my God, you two have to listen to this.' And [I was like], 'Yeah yeah yeah, I'll be in there in a minute. I'm eating.' And then I went in and we started listening and, you know, tears started and I couldn't stop them. It was like, 'Oh my God. I have to leave.' I had to leave. Somebody came up to me and said, 'James, you've gotta come to Kirk. He's…' 'Oh, you too.' It hit us, man. That was a sign that it was the right thing to do."
On whether there are any plans for METALLICA and Lou Reed to take their collaboration on the road:
Hetfield: "We would love to do some shows — I don't know how many, I don't know where. How many can we do together? It doesn't need to be 20 shows and it doesn't need to be one show — somewhere in the middle there, I think, to give everyone a taste of it and just see what it's like. It's an intense record and Lou has stated that he doesn't know if he can do the whole thing. But I think he will and I think he certainly can. It's a very unique concept — it's not a METALLICA concert; it's not anthem rock whatsoever. This is kind of lonely... It's like one-person music, in a way… for me. I don't need to listen to it with other people; it distracts me, actually. I like listening to it by myself. So it will be probably small, dark places. [Laughs] Like my mind. [Laughs]"

SHINING: \'Live Blackjazz\' Trailer Available
Norwegian "blackjazz" outfit SHINING (not to be confused with the Swedish extreme metal band of the same name) will release its first-ever live DVD and CD, "Live Blackjazz", on November 11 via Indie Recordings. The effort was produced by SHINING frontman Jørgen Munkeby and was mixed by Sean Beavan (MARILYN MANSON, NINE INCH NAILS, SLAYER). The mastering duties were handled by Tom Baker (MARILYN MANSON, NINE INCH NAILS)
For the first time ever, the raw energy of SHINING's legendary live performances has been captured on tape in a setting organized solely by the band itself. Produced by Munkeby and backed by the same mixing and mastering team as on their previous "Blackjazz" studio album, we could not get a truer version of what "Blackjazz" is meant to be. Straight from the horse’s mouth, this is the new standard that bands will strive to match for the next 10 or 20 years to come.
"This is basically the 'Greatest Hits' album we have always dreamed of, now beautifully combined with breath-taking film footage vibrating with power. It feels good to know that people can now truly experience how much fire and effort we pour into our live shows. It could not have been better!" stated Jørgen Munkeby.
A video trailer for "Live Blackjazz" can be seen below.
Over the course of its impressive 10-plus-year career, SHINING has created its own unique and bizarre hybrid of jazz and extreme metal, which is easily distinguishable from the musical world of their Swedish counterparts sharing the same band name.

BEHEMOTH Frontman\'s \'Provocative Behavior\' At Polish Club Sparks New Controversy
The president of Poland's public TV broadcaster TVP has asked the producer of the Polish version of the hit singing competition "The Voice Of Poland" to provide a detailed explanation for the "provocative behavior" of one of the show's judges, BEHEMOTH frontman Adam "Nergal" Darski.
According to reports in the Polish media, Nergal made a special guest appearance during the October 1 performance by the Polish band TIMES NEW ROMAN at the Hydrozagadka club in Warsaw (see video below). A couple of the TIMES NEW ROMAN members turned up on stage in wheelchairs, wearing hospital pajamas and accompanied by nurses. A stage announcer proceeded to inform the audience that the musicians were physically unable to play the show unless they were "healed." At that point, Nergal appeared on stage dressed as a clergyman, wearing a sash around his neck resembling a stole (a liturgical vestment of various Christian denominations, particularly within the Catholic Church and among the various Protestant communions of Anglicanism and Lutheranism). He then laid his hands on the heads of the musicians and "healed" them, making it possible for them to continue the concert.
In his statement, Braun wrote that Nergal's "provocative behavior" showed a lack of respect not only for others' religious beliefs but also for the sick and the disabled. Braun said that he considered such actions to be unacceptable and asked Darski for clarification on the matter. The TVP president also said that the current season of "The Voice Of Poland" will wrap in the coming weeks.
When asked why TVP only now decided to make a public statement about Darski's "reprehensible behavior" while the current season of "The Voice Of Poland" is still in production, the station spokeswoman Joanna Stempien-Rogalinska explained that the Programming Council Of TVP in late September refused to condemn Darski's employement as a juror on the show after determining that it did not break any existing laws. In addition, the makers of the program, Rochstar, have defended Darski's participation in "The Voice Of Poland", calling him "a warm and friendly man with a great sense of humor."
Krajowa Rada Radiofonii i Telewizji (officially known in English as the National Broadcasting Council and also commonly referred to by its Polish acronym KRRiT) — the Polish broadcasting regulator, which issues radio and television broadcast licenses, ensures compliance with the law by public broadcasters, and indirectly controls state-owned media — last month reviewed a number of "The Voice Of Poland" episodes featuring Nergal and stated that there is no basis for intervention. According to Radio ZET, KRRiT released a statement underscoring that apart from his controversial pro-satanic activity at the concerts, Nergal is an honorable activist supporting the fight against cancer and promoting hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
His participation in the TV show divided Catholic Church. More liberal priests like, father Adam Boniecki, editor-in-chief of the Tygodnik Powszechny Catholic weekly defended the right of the musician to stay in the show arguing that he plays an entirely different role on TV.
This attitude was slammed by conservative bishop Wieslaw Mering who said that the Catholic journalist "needed his eyes testing."

WOLFSBANE Guitarist Issues New Album Update
Reunited U.K. rockers WOLFSBANE — featuring former IRON MAIDEN frontman Blaze Bayley — recently finished recording their new CD for a tentative late 2011/early 2012 release.
Commented guitarist Jase Edwards: "You can never really tell what a record is gonna be like 'til it's all recorded and you have some decent mixes to listen to. So you can hear what the record will actually sound like and how well (or not) ya've done!!
"Happy to report my mood on doing just that with the new WOLFSBANE record is one of ecstasy and excitement!! It's also being a little darling to mix!
"If ya have the right parts and sounds tracked, then it's just a balance and sonic power injection job!! And rest assured WOLFSBANE will be pushing the limiters to the maxxx!"
WOLFSBANE — which features Bayley, Jase Edwards, bassist Jeff Hateley and drummer Steve Danger — released its first record in 17 years in April. Entitled "Did It For The Money", it contained the brand new title track along with re-recordings of four old WOLFSBANE numbers.
Commenting on the reunion, Blaze said, "Although we have done other things over the years, we always had WOLFSBANE in our hearts and following our tour with THE QUIREBOYS last year, we had so much fun and have had so much interest that we decided to get back in the studio." | 0 | |
