AFTER FOREVER Calls It Quits
Dutch female-fronted symphonic metallers AFTER FOREVER have issued the following statement:
"After nearly 15 years and with heavy hearts, we have decided to call an end to a great and exciting time as AFTER FOREVER. We are extremely proud of what we have accomplished, and especially of the road we took to get here. AFTER FOREVER has never been a band that repeated itself; we always tried out new things, even though many of them were certainly done at a risk. We think that that has been one of the reasons we've always enjoyed enormous support from all our loyal fans.
"The break we took in 2008 made us appreciate all the more what we'd experienced. Now more than ever, we can look back on so many fantastic moments, something we never would have expected to be part of when we started the band all those years ago. However, that break also made us aware of the fact that we can only continue AFTER FOREVER with the energy, the full 110%, that we have always put into it and we've noticed lately that there is something missing. We have always been musicians who create music with lots of passion, and during the break we built up our own lives again and have been musically active and experimenting in several genres.
"Although AFTER FOREVER is very special to us, we feel that we have reached the point where we need to explore the world of music in each of our own different ways. Thus, we've decided to quit while we're ahead. We are sincerely proud of every CD; each album represents a unique period, and all comes together in our last album 'After Forever', which made all of our dreams possible. We hope AFTER FOREVER will continue to be a source of inspiration for new bands and musicians alike so that our music can live on.
"As band members, but also as friends, we've experienced so very much; highs and lows, good times and bad. We'll keep supporting each other in all of our various individual projects and continue inspiring one another in making music.
"Our MySpace page will be used for updates on all of these projects and, of course, AFTER FOREVER-related news, as well.
"You can be sure that this is not an easy decision for any of us. We'd like to thank all of our fans for their support, also during the break.
"We know that this will be a big disappointment to you, dear fans, and it makes it that much harder for us. You have always given us your all and it was our pledge, in turn, always to give at least as much back to you for as long as we exist. In this moment, that's unfortunately just not possible, so we'd rather leave you all the albums and gigs we achieved with maximum input. We'd also like to thank Nuclear Blast, TEG and MOJO for their patience and enthusiasm, the live crew, the fan club, the fan sites and everybody who's helped in every way possible.
"We'll miss you all."

CANNIBAL CORPSE Bassist Records Guest Appearance On TIWANAKU Debut
Bassist Alex Webster (CANNIBAL CORPSE, BLOTTED SCIENCE) has finished recording a guest appearance on the debut album from TIWANAKU, the central Florida-based metal band featuring Wade Black (CRIMSON GLORY) on vocals, Emo Mowery (ex-NOCTURNUS) on guitar/vocals and Mike Estes (BURNING INSIDE, ACHERON) on guitar.
Commenting on Webster's contribution to a track called "Today in Battle", Mowery stated, "Alex is one of the most professional and humble musicians we have had the pleasure to work with. When we called him to ask if he would like to record a song with us, there was no hesitation with him at all. Alex did a very proficient and awesome job!! We gave him full rein to pick whatever song of ours he wanted to do, let him do his thing with it, and the finished tracks came out phenomenal! We couldn't be happier with the results!"
TIWANAKU's full-length debut is being produced by Neil Kernon (NEVERMORE, QUEENSRŸCHE, DOKKEN) and is tentatively due before the end of the year via an as-yet-undetermined record label.
The band recently posted two new demo tracks on its official web site. Check out "Playing God" and "Ghost War" at this location.
The group stated in a press release: "For those familiar with the EP released by TIWANAKU several years ago, the essence of that genesis has been captured, intensified and is ready to be unleashed as a truly new breed of beast."

Did BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN Take Inspiration From KISS\' \'I Was Made For Lovin\' You\'?
According to Ickmusic, a new controversy brewing on the interwebs is the similarity between BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN's new album opener "Outlaw Pete", and KISS' 1979 foray into disco, "I Was Made For Lovin' You". Similar, yes. But does it tread into COLDPLAY/JOE SATRIANI territory? Listen to the two tracks below and judge for yourself.
"I Was Made for Lovin' You" originally appeared on KISS' 1979 album "Dynasty". It was released as the A-side of their first single from the album. It was the band's second gold single, selling over 1 million copies. The single reached No. 11 on the U.S. Billboard singles chart. The song also became a Top 10 hit in Australia reaching No. 6 on the ARIA charts in 1979. The song fared the best in Western Europe (Where it became a Top 20 hit in Sweden, a Top 10 hit in Norway, made it to the No. 2 position in France, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, and in Holland it became a No. 1 smash).

ENSIFERUM: First Two Albums To Be Released In U.K. With Bonus Tracks
Finnish folk-influenced melodic death metal act ENSIFERUM will have its first two albums made officially available in the U.K. for the very first time. The records in question — "Ensiferum" (2001) and "Iron" (2004) — will be released on March 30 via Spinefarm Records. Both albums will come with bonus material.
After entering the studio for the first time in the latter part of the '90s, ENSIFERUM has been constantly sharpening its sound, dispensing epic music heavy in both atmosphere and attack, with its most recent "Victory Songs" opus (reissued in the U.K. last year as a two-CD set with the "Dragonheads" EP) taking "folk/viking melodic metal" to a whole new level of grandeur.
The band will shortly be starting work on studio album No. 4, with September 9, 2009 already cast in steel as the day of release.
ENSIFERUM vocalist/guitarist Petri Lindroos was forced to miss the group's shows in Russia last November "due to serious illness," according to a posting on the band's web site. Former ENSIFERUM member Jukka-Pekka Miettinen played guitar on the Russian dates and vocals were "growled" by Sami Hinkka.

FORBIDDEN Preparing To Record New Material
Guitarist Craig Locicero of reactivated San Francisco Bay Area thrahers FORBIDDEN has issued the following update:
"Time for a quick news bit about what's upcoming. We're going to be laying down some tracks on a couple of new FORBIDDEN tunes next week with Tim Narducci [SYSTEMATIC] co-producing it with the band. We've been working on a gang of new material for a few months and we wanted to get the first taste out as soon as we could find the time. It's important for us to let our fans (who may be the most patient in the world!) in on what we've been at this whole time. We can tell you only this much....it's KILLER! Tim's going to do a great job of capturing our new energy and we're stoked as hell!
"It's been great working with the other guys this closely again. There is still so much more work to be done! The thing we all realize is, it's best to take our time and not rush the stuff. That would be a disservice to the ones who have been waiting. It's funny, so many opinions are thrown at us weekly about what the material 'should' sound like. The fact is — it's taking on a life of its own. We can never really go in the 'way back machine' and sound just like the kids that recorded 'Forbidden Evil'. As cool as that record was, we would be regressing a bit to do such a thing. This stuff is more in the vein as 'Twisted Into Form' with our experiences over the last 20 years wrapped into it. Heavy, melodic, thrashy, technical, FORBIDDEN!!! It's a blast.
"I can also tell you that Mark [new drummer Mark Hernandez; HEATHEN, DEFIANCE, RE:IGNITION, VIO-LENCE, TORQUE, TECHNOCRACY and SOCIAL UNREST] and Steve [new guitarist Steve Smyth; THE ESSENESS PROJECT, NEVERMORE, TESTAMENT, DRAGONLORD, VICIOUS RUMORS] are doing fantastic work. Most of the material was written like the old FORBIDDEN. Started with guitar and drums with skeleton arrangements. Mark has done nothing but impress me with his ideas and input. He's got a lot to offer and he knows that he needs to deliver. Those are still mighty big shoes to fill with Paul [Bostaph; original FORBIDDEN drummer, also formerly of SLAYER and EXODUS] and Steve [Jacobs; ex-FORBIDDEN drummer] playing on the previous albums.
"Steve Smyth has been great to work with as well! As a few of you may know, Steve lives in London but comes back to the Bay often. He was here last month. But I think FORBIDDEN can get a endorsement from Skype, because Steve and I have been working on it so much since he's gone home. You get a ton done for free with no gas money spent! We go through all the details and it's easy. Especially when there is a great chemistry within our communication. I think all of the guitar geeks (like us) are going to be blown the fuck away! We have some cool shit in store for you.
"Last thing here... Mark and I are recording with Hank Shermann's [MERCYFUL FATE] DEMONICA starting this week. That stuff is so f'n cool! Hank's been working hard on it for a while and now we're going to lay down the drums and solos here in Livermore. With Tim and Brad Barth from SPIRALARMS engineering it. Then we send it back to Hank and he'll put the finishing touches on it, then Dave Otero will mix it. Should be finished sometime in early May. Keep your eye out for the DEMONICA. It's some ripping old-school thrash written by Hank himself. We're all honored just to be asked to be a part of it. How cool is that?"
FORBIDDEN's last studio LP, "Green", was released in 1997 on the G.U.N. label. | 0

"Obviously this tour is also a great chance to showcase some tunes from our new and forthcoming album, 'Blood Of Bacchus' (which should hit the shelves sometime late april if everything goes according plan) and also to build some serious interest in our band. We will hopefully perform two brand new ones on this lenghty trek, allowing you all a glimpse into the current expression of this vehicle."
AVA INFERI in 2007 released the video for the opening track of the group's second full-length album, "The Silhouette". The "A Dança das Ondas" clip was masterminded and directed by Rui Veiga who has previously worked with Robert Trujillo (METALLICA), among others. | 0

IRON MAIDEN Bassist\'s Daughter Strips Down For U.K.\'s FHM Magazine
Lauren Harris — singer and daughter of legendary architect and bassist of IRON MAIDEN, Steve Harris — recently took part in a "revealing" photo session and interview with the U.K. edition of the FHM magazine. Check it out at FHM.com. Larger scans can be found at Female Cele.
Lauren Harris released her new single, "Your Turn", worldwide on January 1 at one second past midnight as the first "official" release of 2009.
This groundbreaking event, in conjunction with worldwide music distribution giants, The Orchard was the brainchild of Quite Great Communications' marketing team, Redlands, and was the first of its type.
"Your Turn" is taken from Lauren's critically acclaimed debut album "Calm Before The Storm", which features performances from her father on a number of tracks — the first time he has played on anything besides a MAIDEN track, ever!
An original rock chick, Lauren is no stranger to touring around the world. She has already performed in front of millions worldwide and will again be wowing audiences with her energetic stage presence on her upcoming world tour.
"Calm Before The Storm" is an eclectic mix of high-energy pop-rock tracks and has already received rave reviews in the alternative press. Lauren is now launching a full-on assault on the British public.
Her catchy power-pop songs draw comparisons to American acts such as the DONNAS and PARAMORE as well as more mainstream artists such as AVRIL LAVIGNE and PINK but with a distinctly British attitude and sound.

IN FLAMES Guitarist Checks Into Rehab; Temporary Replacement Announced
Jesper Strömblad, guitarist and founding member of the Swedish metal band IN FLAMES, has been forced to sit out the group's upcoming tour of South America, Australia and Japan. Jesper has checked himself into a rehabilitation clinic in order to receive treatment for his alcohol addiction. On this tour, Niclas Engelin from the Swedish band ENGEL will fill in on guitar. Niclas has helped IN FLAMES on a couple of occasions in the past and is no stranger to the band's songs or the touring life.
Commented the group in a statement: "Jesper has struggled for some time with alcoholic abuse, and decided to sit this [tour] out in order to seek help and focus on rehabilitation and all that comes with it. We all talked about it and together with Jesper, we chose to ask our longtime friend Niclas Engelin, who helped us before, to complete the tour. We are all sad that it needed to come to this, but health comes first. This is something Jesper needed to do for himself and we wish Jesper all the best with his recovery and hope to have him back on the road with us again very, very soon!"
IN FLAMES was honored in the "Best Swedish Band", "Best Swedish Album" and "Best Swedish Live Band" categories at the Bandit Rock Awards. The awards ceremony, which was organized and hosted by the Stockholm-based radio station Bandit Rock 106.3, was held this past Friday (January 30) at Tyrol in the Swedish capital.
IN FLAMES took home the "Best Hard Rock" award at the Swedish "Grammis" gala, which was held on January 7 at Hovet in Stockholm. The band also performed the song "Alias" during the ceremony, which was broadcast live on Swedish national channel TV4.
IN FLAMES was presented with the award by Joey Tempest, singer for the reactivated Swedish hard rock band EUROPE.
The artists were nominated for their most recent releases, all of which came out during 2008.

DEVILDRIVER Drummer: \'This Record Is Our Most Technical To Date\'
Santa Barbara, California's DEVILDRIVER, the group fronted by former COAL CHAMBER singer Dez Fafara, recently entered Edge of the Earth studios in Los Angeles to begin recording the band's as-yet untitled fourth album with producer Logan Mader (FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, GOJIRA, DIVINE HERESY).
Commented drummer John Boecklin: "This record is our most technical to date. It is certainly pushing the boundary of what one may call a DEVILDRIVER record. It has the vocal deliverance that is very catchy and a little more along the lines of the 'The Fury of Our Maker's Hand' [2005] record, yet blows it away at the same time. Musically we are sounding more progressive at times, as well as more straight forward than ever at times. We absolutely captured all the levels of what we are about on this one. Logan Mader has taken us where we needed to go on a production level. We finally feel like we have a unique guitar tone on this one. Something that always bugged me about our records. Can't wait for people to get a listen."
A two-minute video clip featuring early footage from the studio can be viewed below.
DEVILDRIVER recently re-signed with Roadrunner Records after previously issuing three full-length albums through the label. In addition, the band has secured a new management company in the shape of Davis Entertainment Group.
Commented Roadrunner Senior VP of A&R Monte Conner: "I am thrilled to welcome DEVILDRIVER back to the Roadrunner family. Dez Fafara and Roadrunner have quite a history together and we are happy to be going back into the trenches with him yet again. I'm extremely proud of DEVILDRIVER's steady ascent over the course of their first three Roadrunner albums. They continue to evolve and grow with each new record, and I know this next album will be the best thing DEVILDRIVER have ever made."
Stated Fafara: "I'm proud to say that DEVILDRIVER has resigned with Roadrunner Records worldwide. My friend and A&R rep Monte Conner and the entire staff have been like family to me since 1996 and I am looking forward to many, more years of working together and putting out music."
DEVILDRIVER's last album, 2007's "The Last Kind Words", has sold around 70,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That CD shifted a little more than 14,000 copies during its first week of release to debut at No. 48 on The Billboard 200 chart. This figure represented around a 40 percent increase over the opening-week number of 2005's "The Fury of Our Maker's Hand", which premiered at No. 177 with sales of 10,400.

SYRACH Guitarist Quits
Norwegian doom metallers SYRACH have issued the following update:
"Today we got the message we'd been expecting for some time. Our guitarist Reichborn [a.k.a. Noralf Venås] choose to leave the band, due to lack of motivation. He finished his parts and contibuted well in the studio, which we thank him for. We guess doom is not too deep in his heart, and playing the 'slow' parts has been quite a test for him, but he is a great rock 'n' roller and we had two great years playing with him. So we wish him good luck in the future, whatever he decides to focus on!
"That said, we will focus on our new album and get the promotion done as planned, and not rush things. We will start looking for a replacement in due time. This will only set us back a few hours… no need to worry. The album is soon to be sent off to mastering and a release date will come in (hopefully) a few weeks."
SYRACH entered the studio on January 16 with producer Bjørnar Nilsen to begin recording its sophomore album, due later in the year via Napalm Records. The CD's artwork will be designed by Martin Kvamme, who has previously worked with FANTOMAS, Mike Patton, DARKTHRONE and lots of other artists.

Reunited SACRIFICE Putting Finishing Touches On New Album Recordings
Reunited Canadian thrashers SACRIFICE are recording their new album, "The Ones I Condemn", at Rouge Valley Studio in Toronto, Ontario with engineer Darius Szczepaniak, who has previously worked with I MOTHER EARTH, SUM 41 and EDWIN, among many others. The CD is tentatively due this spring via Brazil's Marquee Records.
Commented vocalist/guitarist Rob Urbinati: "Finally the Toronto cold snap broke, day temperature around +1 Celsius, just above freezing… just in time because it kept us shut in Rouge Valley Studio all weekend. Scott Watts managed to finish up the bass on Friday, Joe Rico finished up his guitar tracks on Sunday, so that just leaves a few vocal tracks for myself and we will be ready to mix very soon.
"I can't find words to describe the sonic Armageddon we have laid down. Late Sunday night, we were talking about how we wouldn't trade this sound for anything. Darius, our engineer, took our visions and is really making it happen. It is raw, thick, all the instruments sound heavy alone…together it is completely devastating. It sounds real. It sounds like a band, not a computer-program-fixed band.
"Not finished yet, but the finish line is visible. We cannot wait to unleash this album to the world."

DAATH: New Song Posted Online
A new DAATH track entitled "The Worthless" is available for streaming on the band's MySpace page. The song comes off the group's new album, "The Concealers", which is scheduled for release on April 20 in Europe and April 21 in the U.S. through Century Media Records (via a partnership with Roadrunner Records). The CD was produced and mixed by Jason Suecof and Mark Lewis (TRIVIUM, ALL THAT REMAINS, DEVILDRIVER).
DAATH shot to the forefront of the metal world with the 2007 release of "The Hinderers". The band built a worldwide following by touring with the likes of JOB FOR A COWBOY, DEVILDRIVER, UNEARTH, DESPISED ICON and others while also taking part in the 2007 edition of Ozzfest. After this wrapped and the band underwent some healthy lineup changes, DAATH entered the studio more focused than ever before to begin work on their sophomore album.
Drummer Kevin Talley (CHIMAIRA, DYING FETUS, MISERY INDEX) comments on "The Worthless": "This song is cool for two main reasons... I am playing drums and I helped write the song. No, but seriously — this song was initially created by Eyal [Levi, guitar] and I when we got together in the rehearsal space and jammed it out. After several drafts and the input of other band members, we had this song. It is one of my favorites on the record because it has many elements of my DYING FETUS drumming style. It has a fucking killer solo section that sounds like old-school METALLICA/MEGADETH except the solos, by Eyal and Emil respectively, smoke anything those 2 bands have ever done... haha... I can brag about my guitar players, right? We finish the song with a morbidly disgusting ending. Notice the texture with the kick drums and the guitar rhythms: they do not match up but they sound great together. This song has a great mix of double bass, blast beats, and killer grooves. It's killer and its way better than your neighbor's band."
The Atlanta-based quintet certainly set out with a mission to truly separate itself from the rest when recording its much-anticipated new album. The dueling guitar virtuosity of Emil Werstler and Eyal Levi harkens many comparisons to Mustaine and Friedman, all the while the acclaimed Talley pounds away with fury and precision and bassist Jeremy Creamer provides a powerful groove.
The band's current lineup is completed by new singer Sean Z, who performs an extraordinary job on "The Concealers".

DEFIANCE: New Album To Feature Guest Appearance By Ex-FORBIDDEN/TESTAMENT Guitarist
Reunited Oakland, California thrashers DEFIANCE have finally completed all the basic tracks for the 11 songs that will appear on their first album in over 15 years. According to the band, "All that is left are some vocals and guitar leads for the last four tunes we recorded at the end of 2008 at Trident Studios [in Pacheco, California]."
The group added, "We are going to have a special guest on the album too. Glen Alvelais [FORBIDDEN, TENET, TESTAMENT] has offered to help us by busting out some sick leads to help fill the void left by Doug [Harrington, late DEFIANCE guitarist who passed away in 2006]. We are stoked to have him on our album, and we truly appreciate it."
Regarding the recording process for the new DEFIANCE album, vocalist Steev Esquivel (also of SKINLAB) stated, "Everything is sounding bad-ass, and [it's] sure to be one of the best thrash album to come out in a while. The guys have really fuckin' outdone themselves this time. What was meant to be some friends having fun and paying tribute to our fallen brother Doug Harrington has completly turned into a monster that none of us even knew it would turn into. Lots of thrash and tons of screaming!!"
He continued, "Vocals for the first six songs are 95% done and recorded. The end of the recording process is near and sounding fuckin' killer at that. Juan [Urteaga, producer] should be throwing some mixes together here very soon, as were shooting for a mid-2009 release."
DEFIANCE's current lineup consists of vocalist Steev Esquivel (SKINLAB), guitarist Jim Adams, bassist Mike Kaufmann and drummer Mark Hernandez (VIO-LENCE, FORBIDDEN). The group's fourth album, which will be released via Candlelight Records, is being tracked at Trident Studios and Greendot Studios in East Bay, California.
DEFIANCE recently posted a new song, entitled "The Voice", on its MySpace page. The track is a rough mix from the group's sessions at Trident Studios. Along with the new album, DEFIANCE is also working on putting together a DVD, tentatively titled "Decade(s) of Defiance", that will chronicle the band's entire career from 1985 to the present.
Part of the so-called "second wave" of Bay Area thrash (which also included the likes of FORBIDDEN, VIO-LENCE, DEATH ANGEL, and TESTAMENT), DEFIANCE officially disbanded in 1993 after the departure of vocalist Steev Esquivel (who would go on to form SKINLAB, and later RE:IGNITION), while the remaining members, with the addition of vocalist Dave Godfrey White (HEATHEN), formed INNER THRESHOLD, which would also eventually disband. | 0
