METALLICA\'s LARS ULRICH Says \'Big Four\' Tour Would Be \'Super-Fun\' To Do

Nudge of the Dayton, Ohio radio station 103.9 The X conducted an interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich on Tuesday (September 15) before the band's performance at the US Bank Arena in Cincinnati. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

On the rumors of a tour featuring the "Big Four" of thrash (METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX):

"I think that that's a story that definitely has gotten its own legs recently. I can trace it back to a night in London in, I think it was in March [2009], where a bunch of us were sitting around way later than we should have been sitting around [having] a bunch of very heavily red wine-induced conversations... It was right before the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and we were all very nostalgic. And the idea of doing that at some point came up in that conversation.

"I think it would be a super-fun thing to do. It's something that I would definitely support. It's something that I would love to encourage. It's something I love to be very proactive in putting together. But right now it's not something that really left that party; it's not something that's like hush-hush being worked on behind the scenes or anything like that.

"I read some of those Internet sites myself once in a while, and it's not something that's going down, but it's something that I would be totally for at some point if it could happen. And we would love to be a part of that at any level possible."

On when fans can expect to get a brand new METALLICA album:

"Are you familiar with the phrase 'Don't hold your breath?'

"When I think ahead of my life, I see more or less touring up through probably the end of next year — the end of '10. Then there's the obligatory six months of 'let's just catch our breath.' Then we'll probably get to making another record, start thinking about new songs, probably in '11. So based on... if you do simple math based on how long it's taken us in the past....

"Basically, the thing that's really different now is 10 years ago, 15 years ago, you'd make a record, then you'd go out on tour on it, and then you'd go home. And then you'd make another record, then you'd go out on tour on it, then you'd go home. And you would just do these cycles all the time. Now, as you get older, at least for us, being out and touring is a lot of fun, and it's also because we have a lot better of a handle on it than we used to. It doesn't turn quite as nutty as it used to in terms of driving us crazy and making us lose our minds and getting into all kinds of trouble. So it's like, going on the road now, we do it much more often but in much shorter spurts. So I don't really think that... this whole thing about, like, you make a record, then you go on the road, and then you're done.

"I think we're gonna keep touring and it's only about how long you take off in between dates, you know what I mean?! OK, now you do a bunch of dates and then you take six months off, and maybe three of those months you write, and then you go and do a summer run in Europe and then you write for another three months and then somebody says, 'Come and play in South Africa for two weeks.' And then you go play in South Africa and then you go in and record, and then somebody says, 'blah blah blah...' So it's like this thing now that seems to be much more of a mix-up. There's no particular cycle to it; it's just much more... You go tour when you feel like it, you write when you feel like writing, and that type of stuff.

"So, to answer your question a half hour later, I don't think there's gonna be a new METALLICA record until at least... I mean, the earliest would be '11, and that's even... But also, like, the record itself is starting to be sort of an outdated format, so who knows... We're out of our record contract, so we could go back to HQ [METALLICA's headquarters in San Rafael, California] and record something and then we could put it up on our web site and whoever wanted to download it could download it. [But] a new record full of 10-12 new songs, it's not gonna be for a little while, because we've still got a lot of touring. We've got another 30 dates here in America, we've gotta go to Japan, Australia, here, there and everywhere next year."

THE KONSORTIUM Announces New Guitarist

Norway's THE KONSORTIUM has announced the addition of guitarist Teloch (NIDINGR, UMORAL, NUNFUCKRITUAL, ORCUSTUS, GOD SEED, 1349, GORGOROTH) to the group's ranks. The band says, "We are dead certain that his authoritarian and razor-sharp riffing will fit perfectly with our music."

THE KONSORTIUM's full-length debut is tentatively due in early 2010 via Agonia Records. The group says, "Being one man short has unfortunately stalled the progress of the album recording. However, with this latest addition to our ranks, the first steps towards a finished album can be taken."

According to a press release, THE KONSORTIUM performs "black metal with various thrash, avant-garde and non-metal influences creating [its] own atmosphere and identity. THE KONSORTIUM features various members. Some of them better and some of them [not as well] known to the metal (but not only) community."

DREAM THEATER Drummer: \'It\'s Impossible To Please Everybody\'

Spiritech of Australia's PyroMusic.net recently conducted an interview with DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

PyroMusic.net: How has the touring for the new record been going?

Mike Portnoy: So far, so good. All the touring we did this summer was totally awesome. We started with a month in Europe and basically spent the rest of the summer in America and Canada. So far it's been great, so now we're looking forward to a more thorough run of Europe through November and then making it down to your neck of the woods, your neck of Planet Earth in December.

PyroMusic.net: Great stuff, but we'll get to that later. Now, with songs such as "The Best Of Times" (written about Portnoy's late father) and "The Shattered Fortress" (the final chapter in the drummer's "12-Step Suite") this record must have been a rather personal experience for you. Was this a therapeutic album for you to write and record?

Mike Portnoy: (Pauses) Well, yeah, I guess it was. I mean, those two songs in particular were definitely heavy for me and very personal for me. I've been writing about my recovery from addiction and alcoholism for the last five albums, because there's been a 12-part series of songs that interconnect and it's taken five albums to complete. So finally completing that process with "The Shattered Fortress" on this album has definitely been therapeutic, to finally be done with that project, which has been kind of hanging over my head for eight years now. So that's a relief and definitely therapeutic to have written about all 12 steps. And the other song, "The Best Of Times", was a real heavy situation for me be to be going through during the making of this record. Flying back and forth from New York to California all throughout the making of it, visiting my dad who was sick and dying. Writing this song and being able to play it for him before he died was truly one of the most incredible gifts I was ever given. I wanted to write a song that was about our 41 years together and the good stuff; that's why it's called "The Best Of Times" even though it's about such a sad, sad subject. But yeah, being able to play that for him at his bedside before he died was unbelievably meaningful and powerful for me and something that I'll never, ever forget.

PyroMusic.net: To my ears, the new album strikes a strong balance between the progressive elements, the metal elements and some of the catchiest hooks you've ever written. I think the last time you really nailed that balance was on "Train Of Thought". Was that the aim with this record?

Mike Portnoy: To be completely honest, no bullshit, that's our aim with every record. I think that sometimes people get it easier than others, you know? You mentioned "Train of Thought" — I loved "Train Of Thought" and thought that we definitely nailed that album. But there are people that don't like that album and it was too heavy or whatever. Then there's people that love "Octavarium" and other people who say it wasn't heavy enough. It's impossible to please everybody. I mean, if you take a poll of a hundred DREAM THEATER fans, you're gonna get different answers from each one of them. So really, it's just our goal each and every time we make a record to have that balance of the three things you said — the progressive, the metal and the melodic. Every time we try to have all of those as strong as possible.

PyroMusic.net: Because of that, when an album gets a few negative reviews or some fans criticize it does it not really bother you simply, because they're just as likely to love the next album?

Mike Portnoy: Well, it bothers us, but at the same time we've come to know that we just can't possibly please everybody; it's impossible. So at this point of our career we just do whatever it takes to please ourselves first and foremost and hopefully the fans will stay for the ride. I'm probably the most fan-oriented musician you'll ever meet and I pay a lot of attention to what the fans say. I try my best to direct this band in a fan-friendly way and try to give the fans what they want. But there's such a diversity within our fan base that I can't possibly please them all, you know? (laughs) 'Cause some people like one side, some people like the other side, some people like the heavy stuff, other people can't stand it. So at the end of the day, we just do what we do, keep ourselves happy and try to make the fans happy, but we know we possibly can't please everyone.

PyroMusic.net: You mentioned the heavier elements and that aspect of your sound is definitely emphasized on tracks like "A Nightmare To Remember" on the new record, which almost flirts with black metal in certain passages, as well as utilizing your harsher vocals. Is this something we can expect DREAM THEATER to explore further on future albums?

Mike Portnoy: Well, I'm a huge fan of that stuff and I've always been really into heavy stuff and the metal world is a big part of my world. So that's something that has always been a part of DREAM THEATER, but I guess maybe more and more as time goes on... Metal is becoming so diverse, so we can be listening to OPETH or SLIPKNOT or TRIVIUM and it takes the music to all different places. But really, people who have listened to this album and said, "Why are you getting so heavy?" (laughs) But we've always had this heavy side to us. I mean, if you take the very first song from our very first album, "A Fortune In Lies", that could have been a thrash song! It was all fast and double-bass and chunky guitars, it just didn't have a big production. So I think maybe since our production gets bigger and better each album maybe it becomes more apparent. And as you pointed out, I've been injecting my more growl-y vocals, only because I think it suits the music better than James' [LaBrie] clean vocals would at times. Not all the time, but sometimes. So I think maybe it's more apparent, but really, that heavy side has always been a part of DREAM THEATER.

PyroMusic.net: Now, you're renowned for being involved in a variety of projects and one such rumored collaboration is one with Mikael Åkerfeldt (OPETH) and Steven Wilson (PORCUPINE TREE). Can you shed any light on if this project may actually happen one day?

Mike Portnoy: No, that's just talk. I mean, the three of us each mentioned wanting to work with each other years ago, and since then it's kind of been this rumor that won't go away. I think all three of us regret ever mentioning it at this point, but I think the hype or anticipation around it has surpassed anything we possibly could realistically deliver. So I think now all three of us are kind of hesitant to do it, because there's been so much hype about it. (laughs) This is an example of where the Internet can somehow be a bad thing and I think... that's why I try to keep as tight of a lid on things as possible when we're making a record, because anything that is said or leaked or heard, it opens up this can of worms of discussion and once people start discussing and discussing and discussing and dissecting and anticipating, they build up such a level of hype and expectations in their head that it's impossible to ever satisfy it. So that's one of the bad things about the Internet. In answer to your question though, I think we'd love to work together, but at this point, we just don't know when.

"The video is currently under editing by Standard Film Team. However, due to the graphic violence and somewhat gory nature of the video, I would assume that we will be forced to edit two versions, one soft and one hard core version. Exactly how and where we'll release them is yet to be decided though."

AGUA DE ANNIQUE To Release \'In Your Room\' In October

AGUA DE ANNIQUE, the Dutch band led by ex-THE GATHERING vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen, will release its new album, "In Your Room", on October 30. The 12-song effort was written entirely by Anneke except for two tracks: "Just Fine" was co-written with Devin Townsend and "Adore" was composed by AGUA DE ANNIQUE bassist Jacques de Haard and Cyril Crutz. The album's first single, "Hey Okay!", will be made available on October 6.

Commented Anneke: Recording our new album in our brand new self-built recording studio was, besides lots of hard work, just a sheer blessing and the end result is to my absolute satisfaction. It's crystal clear, positive, alternative pop rock music with, of course, some melancholy.

"My three bandmates were in top form! I played a beautiful old piano on two songs. Rob [Snijders, drums] played additional keyboards.

"We have one guest on this record: Twan van Gerven, who is mainly known from his great guitar playing for Dutch band BEEF.

"The album was mastered last Monday. This week, I find myself in a sort of a vacuum between the album's deadline (yesterday) and the whirlwind of promoting my newborn, which is about to start very soon. So I sleep as much as I can and I'm trying to catch up with all domestic duties. I'm afraid, in my case, this will mean hiring a new housekeeper.

"The pre-sales for the first shows have already started and we are totally looking forward to play again after the studio period. We will, of course, perform lots of new songs and spoil your ears with recent classics from my two previous albums.

"Do come and see us — these will be the only Dutch shows till the end of 2009!"

AC/DC: \'Amplifier\' Box Set On The Way?

According to U.K.'s Classic Rock magazine, there are unconfirmed reports that AC/DC will release a major box set later this year.

These reports suggest this will come in a box shaped as an amplifier — that actually works.

It will contain three CDs, two DVDs and a vinyl album. There will be a CD of studio rarities, two CDs featuring live rarities, a DVD disc of "Family Jewels Part 3" (1992-2009) and a DVD disc featuring a show from 2003 in Circus Krone, Germany. The vinyl album will have all the studio rarities.

In addition, there will be a 164-page book, plus loads of extras, such as three black-and-white lithographs of unpublished photos of the band in Albert Studio in 1977, a flyer for the 1976 "Lock Up Your Daughters" UK tour and a poster from the 1977 European "Let There Be Rock Tour".

ROTTING CHRIST Begins Recording New Album

Greek extreme metal veterans ROTTING CHRIST have entered Lunatach Studios, located at Mount Olympus — said to be Greece's highest mountain and the home to the Gods of Greek mythology — to begin recording their new album for an early 2010 release. The group, which spent more than a year writing material for the follow-up to 2007's "Theogonia", is promising that the new CD will "have the heavy soulful load to move the band a step forward from their previous output," according to a posting on the ROTTING CHRIST MySpace page. "The well-established style and melodies of the band as well as the so many artistically surprises that always exist with each band's release guarantee their fans a soulful trip."

JOE PERRY: New Solo Album Samples Available

AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry's fifth solo album, "Have Guitar, Will Travel", will be released on October 6 via Roman Records. The hard driving, ten-song, in your face, collection features Perry's trademark rock and blues ferocity, as well as the CD's first single, the blazing "We've Got A Long Way To Go", set for release later this summer. Recorded this past spring at the BoneYard, Perry's state-of-the-art home studio, where AEROSMITH's "Honkin' On Bobo" and "Just Push Play" were recorded, "Have Guitar, Will Travel" is entirely written and produced by Perry.

"Have Guitar, Will Travel" (cover) track listing:

01. We've Got a Long Way To Go
02. Slingshot
03. Do You Wonder
04. Somebody's Gonna Get (Their Head Kicked In Tonight)
05. Heaven and Hell
06. No Surprise
07. Wooden Ships
08. Oh Lord (21 Grams)
09. Scare The Cat
10. Freedom

Check out audio samples at this location.

Still as scorching hot on guitar as he is preternaturally cool in his persona, "Have Guitar, Will Travel" is a departure for Perry in that the CD was conceived as a band recording. From start to finish it took only forty-seven days to complete. "Making this record in such a short period of time gave us a chance to capture an energy and flow that was very different from the last record," said Perry. "The way the players came together at a time when I had the music and lyrics in my head ready to go was pure synchronicity. The last record rocked, but this one rocks and then some. I'm really proud of it.

"We've Got A Long Way To Go", the CDs first single, showcases the voice of a young German singer known as Hagen, found completely by chance on YouTube by Joe's wife Billie. "I first called him from Cleveland when I went to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame jam with Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Ron Wood, Flea and METALLICA," said Perry. "It took several minutes to convince him that it wasn't a prank call, but a true invitation to audition to sing on the CD." Hagen mans the microphone for five tracks, while Perry sings lead on four. The remaining tenth song is an instrumental entitled "Wooden Ships".

In addition, Perry attracted an esteemed roster of some of the best players that the music world has to offer; bassist David Hull, who played with THE BUDDY MILES BAND at 19 and was in THE JOE PERRY PROJECT in the '80s, drummer Ben Tileston, a Boston University percussion graduate, who plays drums with two of Perry's sons in TAB THE BAND, Paul Santo, who's played Hammond organ/pipe organ with the likes of Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton and Ozzy Osbourne, drummers Scott Meeder and Marty Richards and Willie "Loco" Alexander, Boston's "Godfather of Punk," who was part of the Bostown sound of the band THE BAGATELLE.

A six-week Twitter search was conducted to find the CDs title. The winner, out of nearly 2000 entries, was Joe Piscitelli, who used a play on the old CBS television program "Have Gun – Will Travel".

The release of "Have Guitar, Will Travel" follows self-produced solo releases including "Let The Music Do The Talking" (1980), "Once A Rocker, Always A Rocker" (1983), "I've Got The Rock 'N' Rolls Again" (1981) and 2005's "Joe Perry", which received universal critical praise and earned Perry his first solo Grammy nomination for "Best Instrumental Song" ("Mercy").

Perry is planning a "short, fast, hard tour" with THE JOE PERRY PROJECT.

ALICE IN CHAINS singer William DuVall recently told The Flint Journal about the new CD, "I think you can expect a really dense, really heavy but really ethereal and cathartic sonic experience.

"We took our time with this record. There was certainly no shortage of thoughts and feelings to address with everything that's gone down. It's a snapshot of our journey from early 2006 to this point right now. It's the story of our coming together. It's also the story of a band that is both celebrating its legacy but also opening the door to the future, and mourning the loss of a friend, one of the great singers of all time, Layne Staley. But it really is a testament to for every door that closes, there's another one that opens, if you chose to open it. They lost somebody but they also gained somebody."
