WINDS OF PLAGUE: New Song Posted Online
 A new WINDS OF PLAGUE track entitled "Forged In Fire" is available for streaming on the band's MySpace page. The song, which features a guest appearance by TERROR guitarist Martin Stewart, comes off WINDS OF PLAGUE's new album, "The Great Stone War", which is scheduled for release on August 11 in the U.S. and August 24 in Europe via Century Media Records.
"The Great Stone War" ( cover) is going to be available in a number of special editions, which are all detailed below.

PARADISE LOST: New Album Artwork Unveiled; Title Track Posted Online
 A brand new PARADISE LOST track, entitled "Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us", is available for streaming on the band's MySpace page. The song is the title cut of the British gothic metal act's new album, which will be released via Century Media Records on September 28, 2009 in Europe and October 6, 2009 in the U.S.
Commented vocalist Nick Holmes: "This song had a massive overhaul in the last few weeks before recording, and thankfully it worked out well. Unlike many bands, we try to know exactly what we are doing once we are in the studio. So re-writes near recording time are as scary as they can be can be rewarding. This song is swathed in melancholy and the closest thing on the album to a 'ballad' perhaps. Lyrically the title says it all. I find faith an oddity in that some people may have such devout belief that the only common ground with another human is death itself."
The album's artwork (see here), which is based upon a "Danse Macabre" woodcut by Hans Holbein the Younger (first published in 1538), was created by Stefan Wibbeke at Medialogistics (LACUNA COIL, POISONBLACK).
"Faith Divides Us, Death Unites Us" was recorded at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden with producer Jens Bogren. The highly anticipated follow-up to 2007's "In Requiem" features around 10 tracks, including "First Light", "Frailty" and "My Last Regret".
Holmes recently stated about the album's title, "The thoughts behind the title 'Faith Divides Us, Death Unites Us' are very much self-explanatory. There is so much division in the world caused by obstructing religious belief. We are all made of the same flesh and bone. What makes one religion better than the other, and would any true god allow his creation to destroy itself? The vast number of different so-called faiths around the globe just helps to strengthen my complete denial of any god and force the belief that religion is nothing more than a man-made, cash-induced fabrication to exploit a human being's natural fear of death."
Regarding the band's decision to work with Bogren this time around, Holmes said, "We are very happy with [producer] Rhys Fulber's work on the last album ['In Requiem'], but after working on three albums together, we decided it was time to go for a different approach. After hearing the work he did with our 'Anatomy Of Melancholy' live DVD, we decided that Jens Bogren was the man for the job."
He continued, "Our approach this time has leaned even more towards the heavier side of things, even more so than the last. It is vital not to lose touch with our musical trip over the last 20 years. Our music may have had different facelifts, but it has always been 'dark' and the new album will be no exception. Musically and lyrically.
"Writing a new album is always exciting; we never get bored of writing music, and for me, it is the best part of being in a band. Each album is like a challenge to better ourselves, or at the very least, do something that's different to everyone else. We strive to make the ultimate modern gothic metal album, and for me that has nothing to do with the common trend of 'romance' and 'roses.' It should be music to be murdered by."

THE 69 EYES: Fourth \'Back In Blood\' Promo Video Available
 Finnish goth metallers THE 69 EYES will release their new album, "Back In Blood", in Europe (excluding Finland) on August 28 via Nuclear Blast Records (September 15 in the U.S. through The End Records). The CD, which was tracked with the Grammy-winning producer Matt Hyde (SLAYER, MONSTER MAGNET, FU MANCHU), features a guest appearance by MONSTER MAGNET's Ed Mundell. The recording process took place both in Helsinki and Los Angeles.

The first single from the album, "Dead Girls Are Easy", is described in a press release as "a nasty power anthem for sleazy pin-ups complete with a sing-a-long chorus aimed at those online chicks with the looks that kill!" The video for the song, which can also be viewed below, was directed by MTV superstar and close friend Bam Margera and the artwork was designed by Estevan Oriol, whose work has graced countless covers from such artists as CYPRESS HILL, THE TRANSPLANTS and SNOOP DOGG.

SLAYER: New Single \'Hate Worldwide\' Available For Streaming
 Last October, one of SLAYER's brand new songs, "Psychopathy Red", leaked online, and since then the song has been streamed more than a half-million times. Nine months is a long stretch to go without a new SLAYER track, so the band is making available another morsel from their upcoming album, "World Painted Blood", due out later this year. The limited-edition single, a Kerry King composition, is titled "Hate Worldwide", and will be available exclusively as a CD-single at Hot Topic stores beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, July 28.

"It's a really cool track, and Tom's [Araya] voice sounds incredible on it," said King. "The last line in the song's chorus is '..spread a little hate worldwide,' and that's what we've been doing for 25 years."
As "World Painted Blood" is a SLAYER album, it deals with topics such as death and destruction, war, serial killers, and the Apocalypse. The album was recorded in Los Angeles over two time periods, during October 2008 and then between late January and March 2009. "World Painted Blood" was produced by Greg Fidelman, who's spent time in the studio with METALLICA, THE GOSSIP, THE (INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY, SLIPKNOT and others, and executive-produced by longtime SLAYER colleague Rick Rubin, who suggested Fidelman for the project.
SLAYER — bassist/vocalist Tom Araya, guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, and drummer Dave Lombardo — is currently co-headlining the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival with MARILYN MANSON, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, and BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, among others.

SLAYER\'s DAVE LOMBARDO: I Can Imagine Myself Playing Speed Metal At 75
 SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo recently spoke to Keith Carman of Hellbound about the band's forthcoming album, "World Painted Blood". He said, "I can't get enough of the new SLAYER record. I'm really excited about this one. I could try to pinpoint [why] but I can't. It's just very cool."
He continued, "['World Painted Blood' has] elements of 'Seasons', 'South of Heaven', 'Reign in Blood'. It's inspired. The vocals, the leads, the rhythms — it's pure, classic SLAYER…. I'm not trying to push a record. I wouldn't say it if I didn't mean it. I'd keep quiet. If I didn't like it, I wouldn't say much, but this one is really exciting for me. It was exhausting at times, but it was worth it because the outcome is so solid."
On what has inspired SLAYER to make an album that harkens back to the band's legendary catalog almost 30 years into the group's career:
"I could easily say that maybe musical growth or maturity comes into it; unintentionally putting the best ideas and a big variety of ideas together to make it interesting. Maybe it's unconsciously happening. I don't know. Maybe it's willful — nah, I don't think that.”
"[At the onset of 'Christ Illusion'], we were a couple of months shy of my 10-year anniversary of departing from the band. Getting back together, we felt comfortable performing the old stuff and I felt comfortable performing Paul's [Bostaph, Lombardo's replacement] stuff, but maybe we didn't establish our method of operation, our songwriting operation or collective efforts to the extent that this album has them."
On whether "World Painted Blood" could be the last new SLAYER material thrust into the world:
"I don't know. I hear that rumor, too, and I can only speak for myself. I have enough fire and energy to last I don't know how long. I can imagine myself at 75 looking like Charlie Watts playing speed metal. I'm OK with that. I don't know about the other guys. I'll keep playing, though, and as long as SLAYER needs me, I'll be here. Whatever they wanna do. I haven't heard anything internally about, 'Oh, this is it.'"

BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME Frontman Talks New Album
 Vocalist Tommy Rogers of the Raleigh, North Carolina-based progressive metalcore quintet BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME recently spoke to Noisecreep about the band's new album, "The Great Misdirect", due on October 27 via Victory Records.
"A lot of the record deals with the human brain," he explained. "There's definitely a lot to do with alien abductions, and one song is about a group of people who write music in the desert, because music is outlawed across the entire Earth. I get borderline obsessed with certain topics, and that bleeds into my lyrics. During the writing of this record, I got really obsessed with the human brain, magic and code, and wrote a song about all of that. I got obsessed with freaking alien abduction and stuff like that. It's basically what's in my head. I want to create stories and lyrics that go well with our music, because it is so dynamic. I want the lyrics to follow that."
On pushing the limits of musical expression:
"When we started this band, the big goal was not having limits as far as what we wanted to do musically, and as musicians, there's a lot of freedom in this band. We're not opposed to trying anything. And I love having that freedom, to know that the limits are endless, and that we won't be afraid to try anything. It's awesome. I hope we keep evolving as musicians, and writing better and better music."
"When you try to push the envelope, that's when things can go wrong. When you're, like, 'We gotta write something that's different, that stands out,' that's when you're forcing yourself to be weird or technical, just for the sake of doing it. The reason why our music is so unique is because all five of us write and in a lot of bands, it's not like that. We all write stuff on our own, and put it all together, and it's such a collaboration of ideas. It comes out sounding unique without really trying."
"We never go in and say, 'We need this kind of part' or 'We need this kind of part.' We just write, and see what happens. It's always a fun building process, because you feed off of each other, and you feed off of other peoples' ideas. The day we start forcing things out is the day we need to stop making music. Right now, it's fun to write because it's very organic, and we're really expressing what we're feeling."

NEMESEA: New Live Album Being Mixed
 Dutch female-fronted gothic rock outfit NEMESEA recorded its July 2 and July 3 concerts at P3 in Purmerend, Holland for a forthcoming live album, due later in the year. The shows were unique in the sense that the audience was able to hear the band perform live in Surround Sound 7.0 as part of an innovative project that was conducted in co-operation with students from the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU).

OPETH\'s Founder DAVID ISBERG Launches BRAATHUM
 BRAATHUM is the name of a new death metal band featuring David Isberg (founding member of OPETH) and Adam Skogvards (ex-MYNJUN) along with young bass player Daniel Ädel (best known for playing defense for Iceland's national ice hockey team!). The group is currently seeking a permanent drummer and preparing for its first recording session, which is expected to take place in the fall.
Isberg (pictured below) formed OPETH in 1990 with some friends from Täby, Sweden. Longtime friend Mikael Åkerfeldt was in a band called ERUPTION but was considering a departure from this group. One day David invited him to play bass for OPETH and Åkerfeldt accepted the offer. When he came to the rehearsal, however, none of the other members of the band knew Mikael was coming and they didn't want to kick out the bass player they already had. The ensuing argument played out with all the members of OPETH (apart from David) leaving. They renamed themselves CROWLEY and released a demo tape called "The Gate" in 1991. David remained with OPETH until 1992, when he left, citing creative differences. The lead vocal duties in OPETH were subsequently taken over by Åkerfeldt. | 0 | |

CALIBAN: Another New Song Posted Online
 A brand new CALIBAN track entitled "Caliban's Revenge" is available for streaming on the band's MySpace page. The song comes off the German metalcore band's seventh album, "Say Hello To Tragedy", which is scheduled for release in Europe on August 24 via Century Media Records (one day later in the U.S.). The follow-up to 2007's "The Awakening" was once again produced by Benny Richter, co-produced by guitarist Marc Goertz and was mixed by KILLSWITCH ENGAGE guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz.

ETERNAL TEARS OF SORROW Begins Writing New Material
 Finnish melodic death metal band ETERNAL TEARS OF SORROW has issued the following update:
"We have been rehearsing with our new guitarist, Mika Lammassaari, for two and a half months now and things are going very smoothly. We still have no official live show dates (as most of Finland is having its summer holiday right now) but we should come up with them soon. In addition, we're trying to get many foreign live shows, too. And we have started writing new material, too, but it's far too early to write anything about it."

MANITOU To Disband; Farewell Gig Announced
 Finnish traditional heavy metal act MANITOU, which features in its ranks members of OMNIUM GATHERUM, MALPRACTICE and KAIHORO, has announced plans to disband. The group explains in a statement, "We had some new rocking songs ready for the recording and we even had a new bad-ass keyboard player Mikko Reinamo on board. Too bad that we failed to get the recordings done due to the lack of motivation.
"12 years, three great albums and a big bunch of great gigs, ups and downs. A big thank you goes to all our friends, fans, co-operation partners and supporters, you know who you are!
"The good news are that Ismo [Laukkanen; bass], Antti [Laurén; guitar], Mikko and Markus [Vanhala; guitar] are already working together on a new still anonymous project, which will in a way continue the legacy of MANITOU with a new singer and drummer on board. More info coming soon on this case, so keep on checking the MANITOU MySpace page for updates on what's happening in the family.
"But we won't be leaving here quietly as we'll be still performing one last show and playing the MANITOU farewell gig at the mighty local Dark River Festival on August 7th at Honkala Ski Stadium in Karhula. So, be sure you won't miss this event as you really can't catch this later!"
MANITOU's third album, "No Signs of Wisdom", was released in July 2007 via Metal Heaven. The CD was recorded at SouthEastSounds Studio in Karhula, Finland with producer Teemu Aalto (OMNIUM GATHERUM, SINAMORE) and was mastered at Chartmakers. According to a press release, the new material appeals to fans of "IRON MAIDEN, QUEENSRŸCHE, ANNIHILATOR, DIO, TAROT, WHITESNAKE... Traditional heavy metal, that is!"

The song comes off the band's ninth full-length studio album, "Evangelion", which is scheduled for release on August 7 in Europe via Nuclear Blast Records and August 11 in North America through Metal Blade. According to BEHEMOTH: "The Shemhamphorasch is an epithet for a 216-letter name of God discovered by medieval kabbalists in the book of Exodus by reading the letters of three verses in a specific order. The name is composed of 72 groups of three letters, each of these triplets being the name of an angel or intelligence. According to the magical tradition, King Solomon evoked 72 demons, confined them in a bronze vessel sealed by magical symbols, and obliged them to work for him. These demons are catalogued in various magical grimoires, most notably in Lemegeton, which gives descriptions of their powers, appearance and manner, as well as instructions for controlling them. These demons are shadows of the 72 angels of shemhamphorasch. Using their names and sigils, we are able to call on the various demons for various favors. PARADISE LOST Drummer Forced To Miss Spanish Gig, Temporary Replacement Announced
 British gothic metal pioneers PARADISE LOST have issued the following update:
"Due to a longstanding commitment made prior to him joining PARADISE LOST, Adrian [Erlandsson, drums] will be unable to perform with the band at the Alternavigo Festival in Vigo, Spain on August 7. So for one night only, former member Jeff Singer will occupy the PARADISE LOST drum stool. Jeff's return for this show not only allows everyone to honor their prior commitments but gives Jeff a chance to say 'goodbye' to the loyal PARADISE LOST fans in style. This will be the band's final summer show before they kick-off their European tour on October 30 at King Tut's in Glasgow."

MACHINE HEAD: Video Footage Of DEMMEL\'s Collapse At SONISPHERE Finland Available
 Video footage of MACHINE HEAD guitarist Phil Demmel collapsing on stage on Saturday (July 25) during the band's blistering set at the Sonisphere festival in Pori, Finland can be viewed below. Although Phil had to be helped off stage, he quickly regained consciousness and issued an apology to the fans "for cheating them of their last song." He told Team Sonisphere a short time later, "I feel I short-changed the fans and really want to make it up for them. Thanks for all the concern."
This is not the first time Phil — who suffers from a rare condition called cardiogenic syncope (which means that the heart sometimes fails to pump enough blood to the brain, resulting in the sufferer blacking out) — has collapsed on stage. MACHINE HEAD was forced to cancel the last two shows of its European tour with SLIPKNOT last December after Demmel blacked out during the second-to-last song of the band's set in Sheffield, England.
In a February 2009 interview with HeadbangersBlog.com, MACHINE HEAD frontman Robb Flynn stated about Demmel's previous collapses, "It had been happening a bit on this last tour, most dramatically in Paris where, for no apparent reason, at one in the afternoon, he collapsed face first into a wooden table and broke two glass ashtrays on his chest and had to go to the hospital. For the most part, none were public or onstage, so they weren't publicized, but we're very concerned, worried, and a little scared about what's going on. It's confusing. And because it's so random, frankly, it seems dangerous. The doctors he's been seeing, in my opinion, haven't been doing enough, and the advice they've given him is ridiculous. But he seems to be feeling good, and it hasn't happened since then, which is a great sign. He's working to change his habits and to be a little healthier (eating, exercise, stretching) but other than the first few days out, his habits haven't really changed much."

THERION\'s PETTER KARLSSON Launches HOLOCOASTER
 Petter Karlsson wasn't only taking care of the drums in THERION for over four years. He was also a singer, guitarist, head composer, co-producer and recording engineer on the band's 13th album, "Gothic Kabbalah", considered by many to be the best THERION album to date.
Over 200 shows later, it was time to create something of his own. He quit THERION and in the year 2008 he started HOLOCOASTER, an exciting, new project, and began composing new material.
Commented Petter: "The last year I've received hundreds of mails from fans begging me to come up with something new .This is the first time I've ever been able to put 110% effort, commitment, blood and tears into my music without any compromises."

TORTURE DIVISION Entering Studio Today
 TORTURE DIVISION, the new Swedish death metal project featuring guitarist Lord K. Philipson (THE PROJECT HATE, GOD AMONG INSECTS, ex-LEUKEMIA), bassist/vocalist Jörgen Sandström (VICIOUS ART, THE PROJECT HATE, ex-ENTOMBED, GRAVE) and drummer Tobias "Tobben" Gustafsson (VOMITORY), will enter the studio today to begin recording a new demo featuring the next three songs to be completed by the all-star lineup. Entitled "Evighetens Dårar", the recording will be the first part of the band's second demo trilogy and it will feature the songs "Heretics! Now!", "Eld Och Plågor" and "Traumatic Inhuman Severance". The demo will once again be mixed by Dan Swanö (EDGE OF SANITY, NIGHTINGALE, BLOODBATH).
TORTURE DIVISION's first demo trilogy — which was previously available for free download via the band's web site — was released on vinyl on April 6 via Vic Records. As previously reported, the recordings were also made available in CD format through Abyss Records. Entitled "With Endless Wrath We Bring Upon Thee Our Infernal Torture", the effort contains the band's "Suffer The Shitmass" seven-inch EP as bonus tracks. | 0 | |

THE MEADS OF ASPHODEL To Release \'The Early Years\' Collection Of Demos
 U.K. experimental black metallers THE MEADS OF ASPHODEL will have their "The Early Years" album released next month via Godreah Records. This release focuses on the Metatron/Jaldaboath (a.k.a. James Fogarty of EWIGKEIT) years (1998-2001). The whole concept of the band sprung from this lineup. The CD features tracks from all three demos — "The Bemoaning of Metatron", "Metatron and the Red Gleaming Serpent", and "The Watchers of Catal Huyuk" — plus unreleased "Jihad" session demos and other obscure tracks. The disc will be distributed via Shellshock.

EDDIE VAN HALEN Recovering After Hand Surgery
 According to RollingStone.com, Eddie Van Halen is said to be on the mend after undergoing surgery to treat increasing pain in his left hand.
"During the last leg of our tour, I started developing pain in my thumb and my pinky. I didn’t think much of it at the time," the guitarist says. "It got progressively worse to the point that about three months ago I wasn’t able to play at all. My pinky and my thumb were totally locked up and felt like there was something broken."
Van Halen sought out specialists in Düsseldorf, Germany, who initially began treating the guitarist for arthritis, but soon discovered a bone spur, twisted tendon and a cyst in the joint of his left thumb.

DOWNSPIRIT To Enter Studio In November
 DOWNSPIRIT, the German/Swiss blues/metal-oriented band formed by SYMPHORCE/ex-FREEDOM CALL guitarist Cedric "Cede" Dupont, will enter the studio in November to begin recording its debut album for an early 2010 release. The group says, "It's going to be a killer!"
Prior to entering the studio, DOWNSPIRIT will play several shows in Germany and Switzerland in September. More information is available on the band's MySpace page.
"Blending old blues roots with a modern, downtuned guitar-feel, [DOWNSPIRIT's] songs are a mixture of typical bluesy '80s hard rock and a contemporary metal sound, which also includes some electro loops," according to a press release.

DIO Vs. DIO
 The management for legendary heavy metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio (HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW, DIO) has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:
"It has come to [our] attention that a band calling themselves DIO are advertised in Pollstar under Ronnie James Dio as playing Zomerpop festival in Netherlands on Sept 5/6. This is not Ronnie James Dio or anything to do with DIO. This is a trademark name. This is very misleading for the DIO fans."
The Zomerpop date has since been removed from Ronnie James Dio's concert listing on Pollstar. However, "DIO" is still being advertised as taking part in the event on the festival's official web site.
"Dio" is the alias of the 21-year-old Dutch rapper Diorno Braaf. Born in Amsterdam in 1988, he grew up without a father and mainly lived on the streets. Influenced by Notorious BIG, Jay-Z and Eminem, he started to write songs and rap in 2004.

AC/DC: \'Back In Black\' Collector\'s Edition Tin Due Next Month
 Columbia Records has set an August 11 release date for the "Collector's Edition Tin" version of AC/DC's 1980 album "Back In Black". This limited-edition collection includes the 2003 remastered digipack version of the classic LP, with an official "Back In Black" (size large) t-shirt, contained in a collectable "Back In Black" metal tin (8 inches high by 5.75 inches wide).

SLIPKNOT: Anniversary Reissue Track Listing Revealed
 The track listing has been revealed for the upcoming 10th anniversary reissue of SLIPKNOT's self-titled major label debut, due out on September 29. The CD/DVD set will feature all-new digipack packaging and a total of 25 songs, including the original album plus several previously unreleased cuts and demo tracks. The DVD portion of the set was created, like all the band's previous DVDs, by percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan and will contain "tons" of behind-the-scenes and early live footage.

Crahan told The Pulse of Radio a while back how he goes about putting together the pieces for the band's DVDs. "I look for the thing that makes me taste and smell and gets me excited, you know," he said. "I look for those things to start it off, and once I have a few of those, then I get going. And then the plot goes from there."
The DVD will also include a commentary track from Crahan.
A "super deluxe" box set version of the re-release will come in packaging that resembles a safety deposit box, containing a T-shirt, patch, collectible cards, key chain, beanie and a note from singer Corey Taylor.
There's no word yet on the price of the deluxe version or how many copies will be available.
The original album was released on June 29, 1999 and has sold over 1.5 million copies.

JORN LANDE Laying Down Vocals For New MASTERPLAN Album; First Photo Released
 MASTERLAN, the melodic power metal band led by former HELLOWEEN guitarist Roland Grapow, has released the following statement:
"After months of rumors and speculations, it is now official: [Norwegian singer] Jorn Lande will once again join forces with his old bandmates and work on what is expected to be yet another MASTERPLAN masterpiece.
"The new album is already in the works and Jorn is right now in Roland Grapow Studios in Slovakia recording his vocals.
"The release date is not yet decided, but the album is scheduled to hit the market sometime in early 2010."
