VOIVOD Guitarist DENIS 'PIGGY' D'AMOUR Dead Of Colon Cancer
VOIVOD guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour passed away Friday night (August 26) at approximately 11:45 p.m. due to complications from advanced colon cancer — so advanced that the disease had spread to his liver. D'Amour slipped into a coma Thursday night and died less than 24 hours later in the palliative care unit of a Montreal hospital, surrounded by family and friends. He was 45 years old.
Quebec City newspaper Le Soleil reported yesterday that D'Amour — who was diagnosed with colon cancer earlier in the summer — first entered the hospital for a routine operation, but several complications led his doctors to suspect more problems. Then the grim verdict was revealed: the cancer, already too advanced, was inoperable.
Only two months ago, D'Amour was in the studio working on the 14th album from the Canadian thrash-metal pioneers VOIVOD. More than two dozen tracks are believed to have been demoed for the CD, for which the group recently inked a deal with The End Records. However, the band were forced to put studio work on hold while bassist Jason Newsted (ex-METALLICA) was treated for tendonitis.
In a recent interview with Billboard.com, Newsted spoke about the material slated to appear on the group's next CD. "It's the most complete demos I've ever been involved in," he said. "[VOIVOD singer] Snake has already chosen his effects — exact timing of milliseconds for delay. We've had a long time to develop the demos, so there's about 23 or 25 songs that are absolutely listenable right now."
Newsted was a huge fan of VOIVOD before he was invited to join and he remains a great admirer to this day. "They created something a long, long time ago that may have been emulated many, many times since — but nobody can do it like the original," he offered.
Prior to his hospitalization, D'Amour laid down guitar tracks for a reunion CD from the legendary AUT'CHOSE, a '70s band from Montreal. That album is expected to surface next summer.

CATHEDRAL: New Album Due Next Month - Aug. 27, 2005
Mighty doom icons CATHEDRAL from Coventry, England will release their new album, "The Garden of Unearthly Delights", on September 26 via Nuclear Blast Records.
Produced by Warren Ryker (DOWN, CROWBAR), "The Garden of Unearthly Delights" is probably the most varied effort of the band so far. While a song like "North Berwick Witch Trials" will bring back memories of such immortal riffs 'n' groove as in "Hopkins" or "Ride", "Tree of Life And Death" simply tears everything to pieces with its ultra-heavy guitar sound and fierce vocals courtesy of Lee Dorrian. The centerpiece of it all certainly is the 27-minute-long mammoth epos "The Garden" that almost bursts with such a wealth of ideas and changes in atmosphere that other bands probably couldn't come up with on a whole album. Using every stylistic device from female vocals up to violins and embedding it all in that typical CATHEDRAL brand of doom, "The Garden of Unearthly Delights" is a treat for every fan of the band, old and new alike.
The follow-up to 2002's "The VIIth Coming", "The Garden of Unearthly Delights" will once again feature the epic artwork of long-standing CATHEDRAL sleeve artist Dave Patchett. | 0

DEATHSTARS seeks new guitarist and album news
Guitarist Beast X Electric will be parting ways with Deathstars. Here's the official statement on behalf of the band...
Deathstars and Beast X Electric have decided to go separate ways.
Due to lack of enthusiasm and living to far away from the band’s location in Stockholm, Sweden, Beast X Electric’s no longer a part of Deathstars.
It has for a longer time been a problem for the band with the huge distance from Beast X Electric’s hometown on the swedish westcoast to Stockholm, and the problem with getting everything to function timewise has taken too much energy for Beast X as well as for the rest of the band.
Deathstars is now reduced to only four members. Nightmare plays both guitars on the upcoming album, titled ”Termination Bliss”. The band and Beast X are still the best of friends and the former guitarist will always be a huge part of Deathstar’s spirit.
On the upcoming tours Deathstars probably will use a session guitarist. Information on who that’ll be will be presented when that decision is made.
Beast X would like to thank all fans for a ”motherfuckin’ great time''
and says that he in the nearest future will try to extend his collection of Harley Davidson motorcycles. - Deathstars will always be huge part of my life and the times with the
band have resulted in more memories than an average person collects in
a lifetime”, are his last words under the banner of Deathstars. | 0

SYSTEM OF A DOWN: \'Hypnotize\' Due In November
Launch Radio Networks reports: SYSTEM OF A DOWN is reportedly eyeing November 15 as the release date for "Hypnotize", the companion album to the band's first album of 2005, "Mezmerize".
Both discs were recorded at the same time, and guitarist Daron Malakian told Launch that he doesn't think they're all that different. "I'm so inside of it that maybe that's a little tough for me to tell, but I don't see too big of a difference," he said. "I see them both as one record, you know? Not to compare us to, like, THE BEATLES, but the only thing I can compare it to is, like, you listen to the 'White Album' and it's a double album, but, like, they're just a bunch of great songs."
The release date for "Hypnotize" has not been officially confirmed yet. "Mezmerize" was released on May 17 and has sold nearly 1.3 million copies in the U.S.
Daron Malakian recently told MTV.com that "Hypnotize" will feature SYSTEM OF A DOWN's first instrumental, called "Hezze". Malakian said, "I just think it's cool to have an instrumental. Not enough people put instrumentals on their albums anymore." The track is influenced by Middle Eastern music, but also features rock and disco elements.
Malakian also said that the band's next single would probably be the title track from "Hypnotize". | +1

TYPE O NEGATIVE To Release New Album In Early 2006
TYPE O NEGATIVE drummer Johnny Kelly has posted the following message on the band's official web site:
"Here's what's going on. Peter [Steele] and Josh [Silver] are currently completing their tracks for the 'Roadrunner All Stars' CD. Hopefully they will be done this week. After that, we go back into rehearsals to work on new songs for the next CD. We're shooting to have the new cd released in early 2006. There will be no tours or shows of any kind until the CD is completed and close to the release date. Other than that, I went to the movies the other night. I've been waiting for my car to get out of the shop for over a month. I washed my truck the other day. I still need to take a shower today. My 26" kick drum finally arrived for my Pearl Masterworks green sparkle kit last week but the color was wrong so I had to send it back and they're making me a new one. My LED ZEPPELIN cover band is playing in Brooklyn this weekend. Peter being dead was a hoax and there is no Easter Bunny. Blah Blah Blah, you get the picture..."
As previously reported, TYPE O NEGATIVE frontman Peter Steele will be joining the cast of the new vampire movie, "Tao of M", this month. Steele will be taking on the role of Viktor Baine, the vampire who sires Midael, another vampire who terrorizes New Orleans, played by Steve Blaze (LILLIAN AXE, NEAR LIFE EXPERIENCE). Eric Morris also stars, and members of TWISTED SISTER are slated to portray a group of "false priests" who get on Midael's bad side, according to Fangoria. James L. Bills is directing the hi-def production, produced by Milena Rimassa-Merrill and featuring makeup FX by Matt Green, director of "Vicious".
"Tao of M" is reportedly being shot by Velvet Life Productions (the production company formed by Blaze, Morris and Bills) in a joint venture with Isis Films. Shooting for "Tao of M", which is based on the half-hour indie film "Slayer Zed and the City of the Dead", began in early July, and the moviemakers are aiming for a world premiere this Halloween.
Rimassa-Merrill, President/CEO of Isis Films, took the pre-production trailer for the film, as well as some promotional material, to the the Cannes Film Festival 2005, where it was reportedly well received. | 0

CRYSTAL EYES Part Ways With Singer, Seek Replacement
Sweden's CRYSTAL EYES have posted the following message on their official web site:
"Daniel Heiman will not be singing with CRYSTAL EYES in the future. Daniel's full attention has now for some time been on his own band HEED, and writing and recording their debut album. Of course we hoped to make more than one album and one gig with Daniel when we first decided to work together, but writing and recording his own music has been his goal for a long time now, and we wish him all the best.
"This opens up for an interesting future for CRYSTAL EYES, and we have decided that the first step into that future is start searching for a new singer. We're looking for a personal, diverse and powerful voice. Preferably belonging to a guy who's able to rehearse, record, perform and have a lot of fun. If you sound like a mix of Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, Ronnie James Dio, Ralf Scheepers, Tony Martin and Eric Adams we'll surely lend you an ear or two :) If you're interested click here for more info.
"Since Sweden Rock Festival became the only gig this year Mikael has been busy writing new material for the fifth CRYSTAL EYES album. About 75% of the material is finished, and hopefully we'll have some more detailed news about that within a few months."
CRYSTAL EYES' fourth full-length album, "Confessions of the Maker", was issued earlier in the year. The group's first two albums, "World of Black and Silver" (1999) and "In Silence They March" (2000), were re-released at the same time. | 0

Former VADER Drummer DOC Dead At 35
According to a posting at the Polish music web site CGM.pl, former VADER drummer Krzysztof "Docent" Raczkowski (a.k.a. Doc) has passed away at age 35. No further details about his death are currently available. This has now been confirmed by VADER's official web site.
In a March 2005 statement announcing Doc's departure from the group, VADER frontman Peter said, "Doc pretty hard tried to 'fight' against his weaknesses, which were troubles for all of us. Finaly he had not prevailed over that battle... All in all, he attempted. . . VADER today is not just a friendship anymore — it's our life with armies of man involved in music, releases and — first of all — fans waiting for shows or new albums... This is a high responsibility, not too many know about. If a person, even the most talented one, cannot stand it — [he] has to leave... That was Doc's decision as well."
In an April 2005 interview with AbrasiveRock.com, VADER guitarist Mauser elaborated on Doc's "weaknesses," stating, "He had a problem with alcohol and this is the problem. Maybe in the future, if he will be alright, he may be back in the band. Maybe someday. We will see what happens."

REBELLION, the German band that features in its ranks former GRAVE DIGGER members Uwe Lulis (guitar) and Tomi Göttlich (bass), have temporarily replaced guitarist Björn Eilen with Simone Wenzel. According to the group's official statement, "for reasons of health (hearing impairment) our guitar player Björn Eilen will not be able to play any REBELLION shows this year. He has been suffering for some time and this summer his hearing got so bad that he's taking time off 'till the end of this year. Of course we're hoping that he'll recover soon and wish him all the best. His place will be taken part-time by Simone Wenzel who will be swinging the axe! She's not only a good looker but also plays a pretty solid metal guitar. So, watch out for her!"

CIRCLE II CIRCLE: U.S. Release Date Set For \'The Middle Of Nowhere\'
Locomotive Records has set an August 30 U.S. release date for the new album from CIRCLE II CIRCLE, the band founded by former SAVATAGE lead singer Zachary Stevens.
Stevens sang for SAVATAGE from 1992 to 2000, replacing Jon Oliva. CIRCLE II CIRCLE's debut solo album, "Watching in Silence", set the scene in 2003. Now, with compositional/instrumental help from Oliva, Stevens has upped the ante on his promising solo career with "The Middle of Nowhere", delivering "a work of art that was pains takenly constructed over a 10-month period of recording seclusion, devastating hurricanes, and many of life's trials and tribulations," according to a press release. "The record flows like a twisting tale of insanity, devastation, and illusion that takes you on a cynical roller coaster ride with a cleansing conclusion of triumph over diversity."
"The Middle of Nowhere" was produced by Stevens with Jim Morris and Dan Campbell and features the songwriting talents of Stevens, Oliva and Chris Caffery (both of SAVATAGE). Also contributing two tracks to the CD is new songwriting partner Bernd Aufermann of RUNNING WILD.
CIRCLE II CIRCLE lineup:
Zachary Stevens - Vocals
Paul Micheal Stewart – Bass, Vocals
Thomas Drennan – Drums, Vocals
Evan Christopher - Guitars, Vocals
Andrew Lee - Guitars, Vocals | 0
