LOU GRAMM On Current FOREIGNER Lineup: 'It's The Continued Legacy Of The Band'

LOU GRAMM On Current FOREIGNER Lineup: 'It's The Continued Legacy Of The Band'

During a November 6 appearance on KTLA, former FOREIGNER singer Lou Gramm spoke about his participation in the band's "Double Vision: Then And Now" concerts, which kicked off this past Friday (November 9) at Los Angeles's Microsoft Theater.

The shows — which are also being held in Rancho Mirage, California; Atlantic City, New Jersey; and Uncasville, Connecticut — feature current and original members of FOREIGNER, including guitarist Mick Jones, drummer Dennis Elliott, keyboardist Al Greenwood, bassist Rick Wills and guitarist/saxophonist Ian McDonald.

Speaking about what it's been like to perform with FOREIGNER's current incarnation, Gramm said: "That is today's FOREIGNER, and they're a great bunch of guys, great musicians. So it's been a ton of fun having the original band do some songs, the current FOREIGNER do some songs, and then we do some things together. It's unbelievable."

Asked how he feels about the fact that FOREIGNER's present-day lineup is carrying on without his involvement, Gramm said: "I could be critical of it if I wanted to be. But I take it in the spirit that it's meant to be, and it's the continued legacy of the band. And for them to be doing that — and they're touring like crazy — and the original band to come up and do half a dozen numbers to show the audience where it all came from, it's a very unique idea and it goes down like a storm."

b>FOREIGNER's first-ever ticketed reunion concert featuring all original members took place in August at The Sturgis Buffalo Chip in Sturgis, South Dakota.

Gramm and Jones's June 2013 performance of "I Want To Know What Love Is" and "Juke Box Hero" at the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in New York City marked the first time the pair performed together in a decade after Gramm left FOREIGNER for a second time. Hansen has fronted the group since 2005. Jones is the sole remaining founding member in FOREIGNER's current lineup.

MIKE PORTNOY Says LARS ULRICH Was 'Spot-On Correct' About NAPSTER

MIKE PORTNOY Says LARS ULRICH Was 'Spot-On Correct' About NAPSTER

Mike Portnoy has commented on the popular theory that "rock is dead," or that it will never be what it once was.

The former DREAM THEATER and current SONS OF APOLLO drummer was asked to weigh in on the topic during an interview for the upcoming film "Rock Is Dead?"

He said (see video below): "I guess there's two ways of looking at it. Are we talking about the music or the business? Because if you're talking about the music, I couldn't disagree more. I think rock, as an art form, just keeps growing and growing and blossoming and blossoming, and you have all these subgenres that just keep growing. And you have all the great music from 50 years ago and all the great music being made today. So, musically, I couldn't disagree more. But if you're talking about as a business, it's harder and harder in modern times for not only musicians to make a living, but even the people that are not the musicians — record companies or instrument-selling companies or retailers, whether it be music stores that sell instruments or record stores that sell CDs and records. Rock as a business is going through the toughest times it's ever been through."

He added: "When I was coming around, you had thousands of bands selling millions of records. Now you have millions of bands selling thousands of records. Artists and musicians have to think of new ways to make a living."

sked if he believes this is the Internet's fault, Portnoy said: "Yeah, it is. It is. Obviously, when Napster came around in the late '90s or early 2000s, there was a big stink about it, and Lars Ulrich [METALLICA] went in there fighting for musicians and ended up getting torn to shreds. But here we are almost 20 years later, and I think Lars was spot-on correct, actually.

"A band like METALLICA can survive, but if you're a new, young band and you're trying to sell units or sell concert tickets, it's gotta be impossible," he said.

Despite the fact that streaming music platforms have actually lowered piracy, Portnoy believes everyone who has downloaded music illegally has contributed to the presumed demise of the music industry.

"People that actually literally just take the music for free, that's what's killed the industry," he said. "Like I said, when I was coming out with DREAM THEATER 30 years ago in the mid-'80s, you'd sell a million records then. Nowadays a brand new band will come out and sell five hundred units. It's impossible for bands to make a living. They can get their music out there."

Portnoy went on to say that the Internet hasn't been all bad for musicians. "It depends on what your goal is," he explained. "If your goal is to sell units and make money, it's impossible. If your goal is just to get your music heard, well, then you have greater outlets than ever before. So in that respect, the Internet's been a great thing. When I was coming up in the '80s, you couldn't get your music heard unless you had a record deal, you signed a seven-album deal and you had to be in Rolling Stone magazine or be on MTV; there was no other way to get your music heard. That's the good side of it — these days you can do that without having to sign your life away. So that's the only plus side that the Internet has afforded a lot of musicians today."

Portnoy, who co-founded DREAM THEATER more than 30 years ago, abruptly quit the band in September 2010 while on tour with AVENGED SEVENFOLD. He has since been replaced by Mike Mangini (ANNIHILATOR, EXTREME, JAMES LABRIE, STEVE VAI).

LACUNA COIL Is Planning To Release New Album In 2019, Says CRISTINA SCABBIA

LACUNA COIL Is Planning To Release New Album In 2019, Says CRISTINA SCABBIA

LACUNA COIL frontwoman Cristina Scabbia spoke to Metal Wani about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the band's follow-up to 2016's "Delirium" album. "We are starting to work on a new record, even though, I have to say, there are no songs ready at all," she said (hear audio below). "Because our head right now is in tour mode, and to work on the book and the DVD, it required so much time that we honestly didn't focus properly on the songwriting. So as soon as we'll be back home after the Euro tour that we are approaching, we will focus on the songwriting, and then the thing will be real. But so far, we didn't really have a lot of time and, most of all, the right mindset to compose new music. And we want to do it in a very serious way and in a way that we know that we can produce good stuff. But soon. We're planning a new record for next year. Hopefully we'll make it."

Scabbia also said that she isn't worried about LACUNA COIL's ability to survive while digital music sales continue to fall as the music business inches closer to an access-over-ownership model. "I'm not concerned, because I think it's an evolution," she explained. "I think it will be constantly transforming, but I don't see it disappearing. Because when I think about the last 20 years, for example, we started with cassettes —we started with a promo cassette that, of course, is not existing anymore. And I remember when CDs came out, everybody was, like, 'Oh, that will never work. Oh my God! Oh my God! How are we gonna do without cassettes?' Then CDs took over. Then, when the CD wasn't working anymore that well and everybody was talking about streaming, everybody was shaming streaming and MP3s, because, 'Oh my God! What's gonna happen?'"

She continued: "Things are changing. We just have to hold hands with the future, because it's happening — it doesn't really matter. Music will be present, because people need music — people need to listen to music — so it will not be something that will die. Maybe it will only change the way it's presented, the way it's broadcasted, the way it's produced. But I don't see music going anywhere."

LACUNA COIL will release its first-ever book, titled "Nothing Stands In Our Way", on November 28 via Rocket 88. The book contains rare and candid photographs, memorabilia and personal artefacts from the collections of founding members Scabbia, Andrea Ferro and Marco Coti Zelati. Among the wealth of photographs in the book are baby pics, 1990s skater poses, pre-LACUNA COIL performance shots, and tons of backstage scenes from the past two decades.

new LACUNA COIL live CD/DVD set, "The 119 Show - Live In London", will arrive on November 9 through Century Media. The set consists of a January 19, 2018 performance at the 02 Forum Kentish Town in London, England.

ANTHRAX Is Planning Expanded Reissue Of 'Persistence Of Time' Album, Says CHARLIE BENANTE

ANTHRAX Is Planning Expanded Reissue Of 'Persistence Of Time' Album, Says CHARLIE BENANTE

ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante has confirmed that the band will release a 30th-anniversary edition of the band's 1990 album "Persistence Of Time". Calling the disc "one of my favorite records to make," he told "Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon" that the upcoming reissue will include "a lot" of bonus material.

Benante said (hear audio below): It was such a great time for the band and for music. We were, I felt, way more experienced. And even the bands that came up with us too had breaking moments at that point too; METALLICA were putting out the Black Album. So things were totally changing. This was around 1990, and I think heavy metal was starting to become a different source for people."

He continued: "I think the 'Persistence' record and the vibe that was around it was so much more… We were so free at that point to do what we wanted, and we weren't worried like we were with the other ones. And the tone of it was just kind of darker, but I think that's because of what we dealt with the prior year or two. We also had a fire during that time [at the band's equipment storage space, destroying over $100,000 of their prized instruments and other gear]. So we were going through just life challenges as a band. And invididually too, we were going through things. So I think that record is a complete reflection on us at that time."

"Persistence Of Time" arrived two years after "State Of Euphoria", which saw ANTHRAX radically departing from the "traditional" heavy metal look in favor of a brightly colored "surfer" jam shorts style of appearance. As a result, certain factions of the music media started tearing them down — particularly the notoriously fickle British press.

I think some of that backlash that happened towards the end of the cycle of ['State Of Euphoria'] had a bit of an effect on us too, which in turn is why the record after that came out to be a bit darker than the 'State Of Euphoria' record," Benante said. "And I think during the 'State Of Euphoria' time, things were starting to get away from us and I think maybe some of us felt that this was kind of becoming a little bit of a… I don't know… We weren't comfortable with things anymore — almost like a parody of what we were starting out to do. And I just think we had to regroup and say, 'Enough. We did this. We wanna go back to the way we were,' in a sense. I think the shorts got out of hand, the goofiness got out of hand — everything was just a little bit blown up to the point where it just didn't feel that we were in control anymore. And like I said, we just needed to kind of regroup. And I think every band goes through a period like that too, where it kind of gets away from you for a little bit. And you just have to be aware enough to know that, 'All right. Let's pull this back a bit.' You know what I mean?"

According to Charlie, it will be a while longer before the "Persistence Of Time" expanded reissue is ready for release. "I don't wanna put that out prematurely," he said. "I wanna definitely get the best of the best on that one and make it special."

The 30th-anniversary edition of "State Of Euphoria" was released in October through Island Records/UMe. The album was available as a 2-CD deluxe edition and as a 2-LP set on standard back vinyl or in limited-edition red and yellow colored vinyl.

Singer Corey Taylor told Noisey in a 2015 interview that "All Hope Is Gone" was his least favorite of the SLIPKNOT albums. "Just because of the experience around it — it has nothing to do with a lot of the music," he explained. "Which is strange, because when it was finally done, I loved a lot of the music that was on there. It had a lot of strong songs, but now, I listen to it and that's kind of all it sounds like. It just feels like a collection of songs and not an album, which is something we've strived to do over our career. Plus, you add all the turmoil that was going on at the time, it was very much a tale of two cities. You had one half of the band wanting to do one thing, the other half wanting to do the other, and I was in the middle being, 'Isn't this supposed to be the part we enjoy?' [Laughs] So it was really difficult to get that album made in the first place, and it was difficult to get everyone on the same page going out on the road. It was a miserable two years. One of the only reasons I can look back fondly on it is I got to spend a lot of time with Paulie [late SLIPKNOT bassist Paul Gray]. So other than that, the rest of it was so much hard work and pulling teeth, I have a hard time listening to that album without conjuring up terrible memories of what happened. So I'd have to say it's my least favorite of all the albums."

"All Hope Is Gone" debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 with first-week sales of nearly 240,000 copies in the United States. It marked the first No. 1 for the masked hard rockers, who scored a No. 2 with 2004's "Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses" and a No. 3 with 2001's "Iowa".

SLIPKNOT also topped the Billboard chart with its latest album, 2014's ".5: The Gray Chapter". That effort sold 132,000 copies in its first week of release.

The 'All Hope Is Gone' 10th Anniversary Edition will arrive December 7th featuring reimagined artwork and live bonus disk containing our 2009 headline set at Madison Square Garden. The tour will cover a total of 33 cities right across the U.S.A. and Canada, including Portland, Oregon where they haven't played since 1987 on the "Somewhere In Time" tour, Hartford, Connecticut where they last played in 2005, and many other places not visited since the "Maiden England" 2012-2013 tour.

The band's triumphant first leg of the "Legacy Of The Beast" tour opened in Europe earlier this year to outstanding critical acclaim, not just by the 750,000-plus fans who came to see the show but right across national press and rock media, including The Times (UK) newspaper calling it "an extraordinary show filled with world class theatrics… a masterclass in performance and staging."

MAIDEN vocalist Bruce Dickinson comments: "We're excited to return to North America and share the 'Legacy Of The Beast' tour with all our friends there! We're immensely proud of this show and we've had great reactions from the many fans who came to see us in Europe earlier this year. The production is based on our mobile game 'The Legacy Of The Beast' which basically takes various incarnations of Eddie into many different MAIDEN worlds. This inspired us to put together a stage show to take our fans through different worlds and experiences set to appropriate songs. It is not that easy designing different worlds on stage and we put a huge amount of work into this to make it work and the end result we feel is our most spectacular and certainly the most complex show to date. We've got all kinds of crazy things going on, including a replica Spitfire plane dominating the stage during 'Aces High', tons of pyro, a giant Icarus, muskets, claymores and some truly marvellous flame-throwers which I have a hell of a lot of fun with, as you will see! And, of course, we have Eddie, as you've never seen him before, and absolutely loads of other surprises. I've had the time of my life playing with all these magnificent props on stage, it's been fantastic, we can't wait to bring this show to you!"

b>Steve Harris, bassist and founder member, adds: "We gave a lot of thought to the setlist for this tour as the songs needed to follow the narrative of the changing worlds of the stage show. We feel we ended up with a very strong and well balanced set mixing songs we haven't played in many years, like 'Flight Of Icarus', 'Sign Of The Cross' and 'The Clansman' with songs we know the fans want to hear like 'The Trooper', '2 Minutes To Midnight', 'The Number Of The Beast', 'Fear Of The Dark', 'Run To The Hills', 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' and others, reflecting the journey through the different themes of the show. The whole band is really enjoying this tour and we are really looking forward to seeing everybody again!"

Support on the 2019 tour comes from THE RAVEN AGE. Additionally, FOZZY will be guests for the Banc of California Stadium show in Los Angeles.

For the 2019 shows, IRON MAIDEN will, in conjunction with the promoters, be implementing a partial digital ticketing system in as many venues as possible. This technology, being used by the NFL amongst others, is a progression of the paperless system that MAIDEN have been successfully using since 2010 and has worked well in lessening ticket scalping and the drain of prime tickets into the Secondary market.

Fans in the USA and Canada will once again be able to enjoy a Trooper VIP Upgrade package allowing early access to the venue, a pile of Trooper goodies, Trooper beers, food and a designated area to meet with other fans, plus the opportunity to win some great prizes. Packages will be available from IronMaiden.com, priced at $220 ($290 CAD for Canadian shows), with a 10% discount for IRON MAIDEN fan-club members.

BRET MICHAELS's Concert In Greeneville, Tennessee Postponed Due To 'Medical Emergency'

BRET MICHAELS's Concert In Greeneville, Tennessee Postponed Due To 'Medical Emergency'

POISON frontman Bret Michaels canceled his November 11 concert at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Greeneville, Tennessee "due to a medical emergency."

According to a statement posted on Bret's social media sites, the performance was called off because Michaels is suffering from kidney stones and is now immobile due to pain.

All tickets purchased for the gig will be honored for the new show date, which is expected to be announced within the next day or so.

Here is the full statement issued by Michaels's team:

With much regret, we hate to inform you that tonight's Bret Michaels sold out performance will be postponed due to a medical emergency. Bret has an incredibly large kidney stone and several small stones that are now in a position that have made Bret immobile. While kidney stones are extremely painful on their own, being a diabetic complicates the situation and Bret needs to be monitored very carefully. As all Bret's fans have seen in the past, it takes a dire emergency to keep him from performing. Bret loves his fans and was extremely excited to perform at this new venue for the first time. The date will be rescheduled within the next 24 hours, all tickets will be honored and all info will be posted on the venue's site and all Bret Michaels' sites and social media platforms."

Earlier this year, POISON toured for the first time since 2012, a hiatus largely due to Michaels's frequent tours as a solo artist, during which he typically performs a setlist that differs little from what POISON plays.

Michaels said during POISON's "Nothin' But A Good Time" tour that while the band will take the year off in 2019, he'd like POISON to tour again and release something new in 2020. "I think one or two songs, singles route, 100,000 percent," he told Loudwire. "We've already written one song on the road that we've been jamming at soundcheck. It really sounds good — it's a very modern song with a great feel and great hook."

SCORPIONS Forced To Cancel Sydney Show With DEF LEPPARD Due To KLAUS MEINE's Vocal Issues

According to Australia's MusicFeeds, German rock legends the Scorpions were forced to cancel their November 10th show supporting Def Leppard in Sydney. Scorpions vocalist Klaus Meine issued the following statement:

"Dear Australian Fans, believe me I have tried everything to be up on stage tonight in Sydney... I haven‘t said a word in the last 36 hours to rest my pipes, but unfortunately my voice is not back to the power it needs to sing my heart out for you tonight. You deserve nothing less than the best performance and I hope we have a chance to come back to finally 'Rock You Like A Hurricane’. Thank you for all the 'get well soon' messages. Thank you, Def Leppard, for your amazing support on this tour. Love Klaus."

Scorpions were forced to cancel their performance on November 8th at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia due to Meine's vocal issues. His previous statement follows:

"We came a long way to finally ROCK Australia for the very first time (except for Melbourne ) together with our friends Def Leppard. We have had a fantastic run so far, and it breaks my heart to let you know that I can’t sing tonight at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. The Doc has recommended that I rest my voice until Sydney and I cross my fingers that it all works out."

VISION QUEST Sign With Rockshots Records

VISION QUEST Sign With Rockshots Records

Italy's Vision Quest have signed a worldwide record deal with Rockshots Records for the release of their self-titled debut album.

Vision Quest is a project born many years ago with the purpose of conceiving a "Rock Opera" with melodic rock songs. The band name is inspired by "Vision Quest", a 1985 American coming-of-age drama film: the soundtrack includes songs from the artists of the "HeyDay" melodic rock era such as Journey, Foreigner, John Waite, Sammy Hagar among the others.

Background of the Vision Quest sound is focused on the melodic rock/AOR music from the 80’s combined with a symphonic rock and progressive rock influences of bands like Magnum, Kansas and Asia. The self-titled album is divided into two parts; the first part tells the story of "Orion", who fights and dies to save his people from an obscure and unknown force; the second part tells the story of "Avathar”, squire of the king who ends up betraying Orion in exchange for immortality and gets to be exiled; during the exile he gets suffering, repenting, and finds love.

Produced by Marco Bartoli and Guido Ponzi, Mixed by Stefano Riccò at Esagono Studios and Mastered by Giovanni Versari (Muse) at "La Maestà" Studio, Vision Quest's debut album is set to be released worldwide via Rockshots Records on December 14th, in digipak, digital download and streaming.

ZIMMERS HOLE Recruits REVOCATION / 3 INCHES OF BLOOD Drummer ASH PEARSON To Replace GENE HOGLAN

As unveiled at the Legion Of Flames release party on November 4th in Vancouver, BC, Ash Pearson (Revocation, 3 Inches Of Blood) is the new drummer for Zimmers Hole, replacing Gene "The Atomic Clock” Hoglan (Testament, Dark Angel).

Taking into account Gene's full schedule as a member of Testament and Dark Angel, and with Lorde Heathen, Jed Simon and Byron Stroud eager to relaunch The Hole, it was Gene who recommended Ash as his replacement. This a natural and comfortable fit as all the guys have known Ash for years. Fans will recall Ash and Byron's history playing together in 3 Inches Of Blood.

Exclusive: HELD HOSTAGE Premiere “Show Me The Way Back Home” Lyric Video Featuring JOE LYNN TURNER

Exclusive: HELD HOSTAGE Premiere “Show Me The Way Back Home” Lyric Video Featuring JOE LYNN TURNER

New York-based rockers Held Hostage are all about helping military veterans, and will do so this Veterans Day, when their latest single, “Show Me The Way Back Home,” is released, with portions of the proceeds being donated to veterans groups.

The thought-provoking track featuring iconic singer Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow/Deep Purple/Yngwie Malmsteen), will then will be followed up with a full-length CD, entitled Epic.

The band comments: “Let me start off by saying, Happy Veterans Day and, thank you for your service. I am so proud of what 'Show Me the Way Back Home' has become - It is a battle cry of sorts for many Veterans who just want to be heard but are not sure how to. I have had 100% positive feedback, not just from Veterans but from people who never served or had family members who served and never came home. These people thank me - and say what a great cause. To further, I have been helping Veterans since back in the 90’s before most people even realized what they were going through or had been through. Not just physically but emotionally and how it taken it’s a toll on many of them.

“I started writing ‘Show Me the Way Back Home’ after hearing stories from my brother about Vietnam, and the way they were treated when they arrived home. They were spit on, thrown beer cans at, and treated horribly by the protesters. They were even told upon arrival to USA to take off their uniforms so protesters wouldn't target them. I became fascinated by the stories - not to mention disgusted - and I researched Vietnam and all the wars. One thing I discovered, was that many of them will “not” ask for help. I also realized that a lot of these men never came home, and the ones that did come home, truly never made it back all the way. That's why I wrote ‘Show Me the Way Back Home,’ in hopes to heal and let them know there is a way for them to come back home.

“When I was recording the song, the process turned into a little longer one then I thought. Finding the right combination of guys to record with and the producer was key to establishing the ground work. I have to say Carl Canedy drummer/producer was a big plus to the song. Then you add in the iconic singer Joe Lynn Turner (Deep Purple, Rainbow, Yngwie Malmsteen), along with some great guys in the band, including myself Tom Collier, Scott Greg, Ian Evans, Joe Reppert, Greg Truax. I also have some great special guests that do live appearances with Held Hostage that include Carl Canedy (The Rods), Freddy Villano (Quiet Riot, Dee Sniders Widower Maker, American Mafia), Giorgio Mongelli (Ethan Brosh) and Mike Sanstasiero (Totally Lost Cause).”

Tom Collier: “This has been quite the journey and helping people doing the right things makes it all worthwhile. When I was writing Show Me the Way Back Home. I never imagined I would be playing live and recording with, some of music’s biggest Icons, I use to watch from the audience. Get ready this is going to be one Helluva Ride.”

Joe Lynn Turner: "I support the Veterans and performing on this song was such an honor and pleasure. Very powerful!"

Of note: Tom also donates a portion of the proceeds of my music sales to the veterans groups. Tom is currently helping the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 704 raise funds to build a memorial for the 27 Heroes in Cayuga County, NY - 27 that never came home.

SODOM’s Tom Angelripper – “We Will Try To Release The Next Album At The End Of 2019”

SODOM’s Tom Angelripper – “We Will Try To Release The Next Album At The End Of 2019”

Greece’s Rock Overdose caught up with Sodom frontman Tom Angelripper and talked about a possible release date of their next full-length album.

On the subject of plans of a new full-length album, Angelripper said, “Yes, but we want to work it out without any time-pressure, so we don`t talk about a release date with the record company. But, if everything will be prepared we try to release in the end of 2019 or beginning of 2019. We`ll see.”

On reuniting with Blackfire: “Like sitting in a time machine. I was so glad, that he did not change his guitar sound all over the decades and the way he write songs. That’s so crazy. When we rehearsed ‘Nuclear Winter’, ‘Sodomy & Lust’, ‘Christ Passion’ for the first time, I was so astonished that the guitar sound is exactly the same like on Persecution Mania or Agent Orange album. Now, we are able to reproduce the songs in an original way during the live sets.”

Sodom recently released their new single and video for "One Step Over The Line". This is a live version from the Rock Hard Festival and the song is the bonus track of the digital version of the new Partisan EP, which will be released on November 23rd.

And on top of that, on November 30th Sodom will start this years MTV Headbangers Ball Tour in Leipzig, Germany. Watch a trailer for the EP and tour, below.

KHEMMIS – “Flesh To Nothing” Guitar Playthrough Video Streaming

KHEMMIS – “Flesh To Nothing” Guitar Playthrough Video Streaming

Hailing from Denver's thriving metal scene, Khemmis captivated fans with their latest album Desolation, which was released in June via 20 Buck Spin and Nuclear Blast Entertainment. Combining traditional doom with Thin Lizzy-style hard rock, the band has honed their craft to blend both extreme and old-school influences more seamlessly than ever before. Ill-omened melodies alongside chugging, galloping riffs set the tone of the album, and in a new playthrough video, dueling axemen Phil Pendergast and Ben Hutcherson play through the track, "Flesh To Nothing."

"With Desolation we wanted to make a record that celebrated our love of the metal that got us into heavy music in the first place while still adding our own spin on that sound," explains Pendergast. "For me, 'Flesh to Nothing' is the song that most explicitly captures that spirit. My vocals were very inspired by both Rob Halford and Nick Holmes here, and the riffing has a lot of heavy metal swagger, making it one of my favorite tracks to play. The vocal climax into the dueling guitar solos is one of my favorite moments on the new record."

Hutcherson adds, "We chose 'Flesh To Nothing' for this guitar playthrough because it covers a lot of ground -- a somber, downtempo chorus gives way to a galloping bridge early in the song, while the vocal interplay during the black metal pre-solo break alludes to the dueling guitar leads near the end. Oh, and let's not forget all the harmonized guitar lines -- we channeled Iron Maiden quite a few times in this track! Over the years, lots of fans asked how we write and play these songs, so we felt that 'Flesh' would serve as an ideal introduction to playing our brand of doomed heavy metal.

We tune our Flying Vs to Drop D down two whole steps (low to high A# F A# D# G C) and we both use D'Addario EXL158 Light Baritone Strings (13-62). When you tune low and play hard, you've gotta beef up those strings!"

Khemmis is preparing to perform several new live performances this month and next in support of the LP, beginning with a Western US run in late November where they'll play alongside the likes of The Black Dahlia Murder, Pig Destroyer, Power Trip, Ghoul, Gost, Skeletal Remains, and more with shows in Fort Collins, Portland, and Berkley on their way to play the first night of Decibel Magazine's Metal And Beer Festival in Los Angeles December 1st with Testament, Pig Destroyer, The Black Dahlia Murder, Necrot, Pounder, Trappist and more. Later in December, Khemmis plays Two Nights of Doomed Heavy Metal - two back-to-back hometown Denver shows, each night performing different and unique sets drawing from all the band's releases. The first night, A Night of Doom, sees support from Dreadnought and Green Druid, while night two, A Night of Heavy Metal, will see Of Feather And Bone and Nightwraith opening.

ELO / WIZZARD Cellist HUGH McDOWELL Dead At 65

ELO / WIZZARD Cellist HUGH McDOWELL Dead At 65

BBC.com is reporting that Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard cellist, Hugh McDowell, has died from cancer at the age of 65.

McDowell performed at ELO's first concert in 1972, but left a year later with fellow bandmate Roy Wood to form Wizzard. He returned to ELO shortly after, featuring on their albums Eldorado and Face The Music.

McDowell was invited to join ELO by Jeff Lynne when he was 19 and, bar his brief hiatus with Wizzard, remained in the group until 1979 when Lynne ditched ELO's string section.

News of his death was confirmed after friend and fellow ELO cellist Melyvn Gale posted a statement on his private Facebook page. He said: "I'm sad beyond words to have to pass on the news that my old friend and fantastic cellist Hugh McDowell passed away last night after a long illness.

"We met in our mid teens and were close until we left ELO in 1980. He was a beautiful free spirit, had such a natural gift as a cellist and just a lovely bloke."

DAMIAN WILSON And ADAM WAKEMAN To Release New Session Album, Stripped, In January; Cover Of DAVID BOWIE's "Life On Mars" Streaming

DAMIAN WILSON And ADAM WAKEMAN To Release New Session Album, Stripped, In January; Cover Of DAVID BOWIE's "Life On Mars" Streaming

After the final show of their 2018 acoustic tour, Damian Wilson (Ayreon, Headspace) and Adam Wakeman (Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath) decided to go into the studio for one day and try to capture the onstage chemistry. They played through songs performed on their 27-date tour through Europe, which had an ever-changing set list every night, and recorded everything.

This session will be released on vinyl, CD and digital/streaming format on January 11th.

Aside from stripped down versions of songs from their joint albums and both their solo catalogues, the album also contains a selection of cover songs that were part of the tour set list: "Life On Mars" (David Bowie) and "Feel Like Going Home" (Charlie Rich). "Soldier" is played in Damian’s original song arrangement, before it became a Headspace track.

Pre-order the album (with some exclusive pre-order extras) here.

”The intention was to record one or two songs." - Damian Wilson

“I've never made an album that left me so exposed before. We both recorded completely live in the studio, so every noise from the piano damper pedal, every breath, every note and expression is laid bare on the recording. There's something magical about not being able to alter or fix anything once you've captured a performance.” - Adam Wakeman

The session was mixed by Gary Stevenson (ABC, Tony Hadley) and mastered by Brett Caldas-Lima (Ayreon, Devin Townsend).

"Life On Mars" is available now on all major download and streaming platforms. Listen to the song below.

Tracklisting:

"Life On Mars"
"Laugh In Time"
"Written In Anger"
"Tapestries"
"People Come And Go"
"Disciple"
"Seek For Adventure"
"I Won’t Blame Life"
"Soldier"
"The Sun Will Dance In Its Twilight Hour "
"Feel Like Going Home"

"Life On Mars":

Damian and Adam will embark on a second UK tour on January 5th, with more shows throughout Europe to be added later in 2019. Visit WilsonWakeman.com for more details and tickets.
