KERRY KING: I Don't Think JEFF HANNEMAN And I Were Ever Best Friends

In the August 2013 issue of Guitar World magazine, SLAYER's Kerry King speaks about the personal relationship he had with fellow SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who died May 2 from alcohol-related cirrhosis of the liver, a result of a lifetime of drinking.

"[Any time we would finish a tour, Jeff] would just go home and detach," King says. "He might have lived only 45 minutes away, but unless you were part of his inner circle, it was hard to stay in touch with him. And it took me a few years to understand that. For a while I was just like, 'Why isn't this guy calling me back?' But as I got older, I just realized that that was who Jeff was.

"I don't think Jeff and I were ever best friends," continues King. "I think we were probably the closest in the band, but never best friends. To put it in a way that everyone could understand, Jeff and I were like business partners. Was he my friend? Of course he was my friend. But we didn't really act like that. The last time I was at Jeff's house was January 2003. We went to his place to watch the Raiders in the playoffs. And it sounds horrible, but it wasn't horrible. That was just how it was."

Speaking to Australia's "Distortion" radio show in March during this year's Soundwave festival, King said about Hanneman: "I don't really speak to Jeff. And that's nothing new or bad or… He's always been a recluse, and since he hasn't been jamming with us, he's been a bigger recluse. I think the last time I tried to reach out to him, he e-mailed something about something business-wise, and I just sent something back, 'Hey, man, what's going on? I haven't heard from you in a while. How are you doing?' And I didn't get nothing. I'm not the kind of guy that chases friendships; I'm not the kind of guy that chases [people, saying], 'Hey, man, you didn't answer me.' So… It's his gig. And I've always said that, first and foremost, [SLAYER fill-in guitarist] Gary [Holt, who is also a member of EXODUS] does a wonderful job and I love playing with Gary and hopefully Gary is free anytime SLAYER goes out, but if Jeff came to my house in the morning and said, 'Man, I'm ready. I can play the shit. I'm ready to go.'... It's Jeff's gig. It's always gonna be Jeff's gig until Jeff says, 'I can't do it.'"

JORN LANDE 'Never Saw MASTERPLAN As His Main Band,' Says ROLAND GRAPOW

Mark Dean of Myglobalmind webzine recently conducted an interview with former HELLOWEEN and current MASTERPLAN guitarist Roland Grapow. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Myglobalmind: Do you think that MASTERPLAN has exceeded the personal expectations that you had when you first started?.

Roland: Especially with the first two albums, I think that we achieved a lot of respect and a lot of surprise from people. Nobody really expected anything so strong from us. I guess even the HELLOWEEN guys didn't even know when they fired us that maybe we would be just go out of the business. After the first album, I was very happy that we came back with such a powerful return. It was such a big success for that time. Nowadays sales are on the way down every year and there are other problems. We have just released our fifth album and I think that over the years, there has been a stable degree of good quality within the band. There have been some big lineup changes, singer problems… It still sounds like MASTERPLAN for my taste.

Myglobalmind: You referred there briefly to the lineup changes that MASTERPLAN have undergone . Do you find that rotation of the band personalities is necessary for its evolution and development?

Roland: I think that its basically hard to explain why we always had singer changes. When we started MASTERPLAN with Jorn [Lande], a lot of people had warned me to be careful saying that he was very difficult. That he was never happy or satisfied with things. I think that the only thing that he really was concentrated on was trading on a solo career called JORN. Everything else for him was just a side project; he never saw MASTERPLAN as his main band. It was especially bad for me as I had put so much love, work and so much feeling for this band. I had given everything to make the band big. Jorn never did anything for us for this band. He never even said anything great about MASTERPLAN. That is not nice; you need a really good team behind you which loves this work. It's the same as a company — if someone is not dedicated totally 100%, it doesn't matter what a great voice he has. You stay on the same level, but now with a totally different lineup, we have a really big chance of getting further now. We can play live again, and have already played a couple of shows. There are a lot of shows booked, including some festivals, and we are planning a tour in October. That just wasn't happening for about six years, which was quite terrible, to be honest. It is definitely very important to play live. It doesn't make sense to make great music with people saying, "You are a great band." If you don't show yourself, nobody can fully get that feeling. Personally, I need it as well — if there is a band that I really like, but I don't get to see their live performance, it doesn't give me that last 30%. I think that is really important to get more closer to the band. Especially sometimes when you think that a song is OK, but if you see that band performance of the song live then you will always remember it. It's like an imprint on your brain or something. There is also some elements of difference, with the solo parts and some improvising. Sometimes we shorten some things which are too long for the live situation. Or we make parts for the audience to sing along. The next plan in the near future is to make a live album or DVD. MASTERPLAN now have five albums out after 10-12 years so we want to release a DVD or something definitely.

Myglobalmind: Do you then prefer to focus creatively on looking forward to the future, rather than back to the past?

Roland: Sometimes I like to look back, but am more thinking of the future. I am not one of these guys sitting at home thinking back that was such a good time. Of course we had a great time in HELLOWEEN, but also some terrible times. The same is true of MASTERPLAN. However, MASTERPLAN is the kind of band that makes me prouder than HELLOWEEN, even though we did great work in HELLOWEEN. Everything that I am doing now is the result of being a longtime member of this really professional band. We work with Sanctuary, English management. We have toured many times with [IRON] MAIDEN, so we have had good experiences. That really helps you a lot for the future. Definitely that arrangement and also working with great producers, who have really lifted the MASTERPLAN sound.

SCORPIONS: 'MTV Unplugged - Live In Athens' Due Before End Of Year

On September 11, September 12 and September 14, German hard rock legends SCORPIONS will play three concerts in Athens, Greece under the banner "MTV Unplugged - Scorpions Live In Athens" at the Lycabettus Theatre over the roofs of the ancient city. For the first time in the history of the "MTV Unplugged" series, a concert in Greece under the open sky will take place.

The SCORPIONS will perform their biggest hits, album classics as well as some exclusive new songs in the typical sound and arrangement of "MTV Unplugged". They will be supported by national and international surprise guests, to be announced at a later date.

Says the band: "'MTV Unplugged' was already top on our wish list and therefore we have gladly accepted the offer to stage these concerts as part of our farewell tour. We are [happy to be working] together with MTV on this very special event in Athens."

"MTV Unplugged - Scorpions Live In Athens" will be released at the end of 2013 on CD, DVD and Blu-ray disc. In addition, the performance will be premiered on MTV and VIVA in Germany.

SCORPIONS spent the first three months of 2012 in the studio with producers Mikael "Nord" Andersson and Martin Hansen resurrecting a dozen unfinished songs from what some people believe was the band's best and most creative period — leftovers from the albums "Blackout" (1982), "Love At First Sting" (1984), "Savage Amusement" (1988) and "Crazy World" (1990) — for an album that is tentatively scheduled for release later this year. "It will be material that was never finished; songs with pure SCORPIONS DNA from a very exciting time," singer Klaus Meine confirmed to Classic Rock. "Once we close the book on the crazy touring schedule, that's something we'll pick up again." An album of all-new SCORPIONS material may surface as well, according to Meine. "At this point nothing is out of the question," he said. "When we said adios with 'Sting In The Tail', our label, Sony Music, cried, 'No, no, no… What about this idea? What about that idea?' There are some offers you just can't refuse. I don't want to say too much right now, but I can reassure you there is still life in those bloody old SCORPIONS."

GHOST SHIP OCTAVIUS is seeking a suitable record company to release the band's debut album, for which 13 songs have already been written, including "Released", "Alive", "Successor", "Find The Light" and "Caged Love".

AEROSMITH Singer: 'Me Doing A Solo Record Doesn't Mean The Band Isn't Working On A Record'

During a brand new interview with Billboard.com, AEROSMITH singer Steven Tyler spoke about his plans to record his long-in-the-making solo album, hopefully for release in 2014 and including possible collaborations with Johnny Depp and Elton John, among others.

"I'm just doing a solo record 'cause I think it's fuckin' kinky to go write a song with Johnny Depp," says Tyler. "I think it's fuckin' ridiculous to go write a bunch of songs I started five years ago and never finished. It feeds my passion. I like traveling all over the place and writing songs and seeing what we catch. It's kind of like driftnetting for songs, right. But, no, the band's not breaking up. Me doing a solo record doesn't mean the band isn't working on a record — but I get that in the press one has to hear that from one lead singer of one AEROSMITH."

The singer recently told Rolling Stone that he's "itching" to do a solo project.

"That's what I'm gonna do next," Tyler said. "I've got some great people that want to get involved in it. It's early on right now, but that's the itch I got. I got that itch to do something that's a lot different than AEROSMITH."

He added: "My heart is in stuff like that weirder, off-the-cuff stuff that I'm not sure AEROSMITH would like. I'm into electronica — I was when I used to listen to Stockhausen in '65. So there's just a lot of stuff — good, weird fucking music that I want to get off my chest."

Tyler also revealed that he's talked with EDM master Deadmau5 about collaborating with him on the solo record. He also said he's a fan of dubstep king Skrillex. "I really want to take a little risk here," he said.

"Pinnacle Of Bedlam"sold 3,200 copies in the United States during its first week of release to land at position No. 152 on The Billboard 200 chart. The effort landed at position No. 2 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

"Pinnacle Of Bedlam" was produced by the band at Full Force Studios in New York with longtime collaborator Joe Cincotta. The mixing and mastering of the effort was handled by Chris "Zeuss" Harris (HATEBREED, ARSIS, SUICIDE SILENCE).

MANOWAR: Audio Sample Of 'Hail, Kill And Die' From 'The Lord Of Steel Live'

MANOWAR will release highlights of its "The Lord Of Steel World Tour" on a live EP, featuring performances from the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Italy, Russia and Sweden.

"From the first show in Zaragoza/Spain to the last show in Yekaterinburg/Russia, 'The Lord Of Steel' world tour was a terrific experience," said MANOWAR bassist Joey DeMaio. "Performing new songs for the first time in front of your audience is the ultimate test of the power of the songs to connect to the only people that matter. Our fans were totally brutalized and went wild as you will hear on this new EP. 'The Lord Of Steel Live' is a thank you to our amazing fans; it will forever immortalize this tour and those who attended it."

The album was mixed and mastered at MANOWAR's own studios Hell and Haus Wahnfried by Joey DeMaio personally with longtime MANOWAR engineer Dirk Kloiber.

"The Lord Of Steel Live" will be released digitally as an iTunes exclusive worldwide on July 9, and on CD in retail and through TheKingdomOfSteel.com on August 16.

Featured tracks:

01. El Gringo
02. Expendable
03. Hail, Kill And Die
04. Manowarriors
05. The Lord Of Steel
06. Thunder In The Sky

An audio sample of "Hail, Kill And Die" can be streamed in the YouTube clip below.

"The Lord Of Steel" is now available in stores and on iTunes and was first celebrated live during Leg 1 of "The Lord Of Steel World Tour" in Spain, France, Holland, Germany, Czech Republic and Russia.

Asked why MANOWAR chose to release "The Lord Of Steel" in digital format several months before the retail release, DeMaio told Rockpages.gr: "MANOWAR have always worked with the latest technology. Thankfully, our fans have more options than ever to choose how they get their music and when.

"We are proud to be able to give our fans multiple choices: We have released a limited edition of the album in collaboration with Metal Hammer U.K., with its own artwork and special mixes as a first look at what is to come. For those who prefer digital content and wish this limited version, they have the option of getting it as download album.

"The worldwide retail release [is] available with different versions of the songs and a totally different mix and master as CD and limited vinyl, both with spectacular new art by Ken Kelly. And, of course, this version [is] available as digital album as well. The fans can decide which options and configurations they prefer."

Regarding the difference between MANOWAR's previous studio album, "Gods Of War", and "The Lord Of Steel", DeMaio said: "All of our albums are different from one another, unlike other groups who constantly try to keep to a formula.

"After the massive production of 'Gods Of War', our vision this time was a stripped down, brutally raw, unique sound; 'lean and mean,’ so to speak.

"We had started working on material prior Donnie [Hamzik, drums] return to the band.

"MANOWAR are a unit. Every band member brings in a unique contribution, so it was only logical for us to start over and include Donnie from the beginning of the creative process.

"Some people will say its a shame to abandon something you have invested a lot of time and energy in, but that's the way we work. It has to feel right for all of us."

METALLICA: Pro-Shot Footage Of Johannesburg Performance

Official MetOnTour video footage of METALLICA performing the songs "Ride The Lightning" and "Creeping Death" on April 27 in Johannesburg, South Africa can be seen below.

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich said in a new interview with Rolling Stone that the band has compiled nearly 600 song ideas for its tenth studio album, most of them coming during jam sessions on tour and organized this past January and March in several rehearsal sessions. But that doesn't mean the group is rushing to whittle all that music down to 10 or 12 solid tunes and record them. Ulrich explained, "I understand there are people waiting for a new record, and so are we. But I can't stress about it. It's not like, 'Fuck, hurry up and get this record out.' Hurry up for what? So we can go play gigs? We already play gigs. We'll get there."

Frontman James Hetfield told The Pulse Of Radio that making the new record was a question of time and not lack of material. "We've come up with enough material for a record, for sure," he said. "We've gone through maybe one-tenth of the material that's on our riff CDs, but we've got enough for an album. We just haven't had the time to really focus on it and dial in and start whittling at these masterpieces, hopefully."

METALLICA is not likely to get down to serious recording until later this year or early 2014, with the new album probably not expected to arrive until 2015. The band's last studio effort was 2008's "Death Magnetic".

Earlier this month the band headlined the second edition of its Orion Music + More festival, which was held in Detroit on June 8-9. The group headlined the second day while also playing a surprise afternoon set on the first day at which it played its entire 1983 debut disc "Kill 'Em All".

The group has a scattering of festival slots lined up into September, just before its upcoming 3D movie, "Metallica Through the Never", premieres on IMAX screen in North America on September 27.

METALLICA filmed the movie last August, combining live performance footage from three shows in Vancouver with a storyline following a fictional member of their crew, played by actor Dane DeHaan, who's sent on a mission during a concert.

TROLLFEST Begins Recording Sixth Full-Length Album

TROLLFEST, the purveyors of what they have dubbed "true Norwegian balkan metal" have begun recording their sixth full-length album, starting with the drum tracks, and the ever-increasing army of fans of the band can expect to see a few changes. As TROLLFEST explained: "We will record eleven metal tracks and we also have a couple of acoustic songs up our sleeves, but at this stage obviously we are not sure which ones will make it onto the album. We will, however, be taking a slightly different musical direction with this album. The sound will undoubtedly be TROLLFEST, but it will vary from our last two releases. We will also be using a different studio this time. We have been more than happy with the Strand Studio who did an amazing job on 'En Kvest For Den Hellige Gral' and 'Brumlebassen', but we just wanted to get a different sound to match our new musical direction so we decided to use Endre Kirkesola's Dub Studio in Oslo". The new CD will be released on NoiseArt Records.

So far 2013 has already proved to be a busy year for TROLLFEST, a band that never seems to take things at a leisurely pace when it comes to their music, either off stage or on. The seven-man lineup, whose members hail from several leading Norwegian black and extreme metal bands, can field multi-instrumentalists capapable of playing a variety of instruments, both modern and traditional, from various parts of the world. So far this year they have appeared at a number of festivals, and taken the band to North America for the first time, when they were part of the lineup on the extensive Paganfest America tour. Further scheduled appearances include the Masters Of Rock and Wolfszeit festivals.

2013 had also been the year that sees TROLLFEST celebrate its first decade, something the band has marked with the release of the limited-edition 12-inch picture disc "A Decade of Drekkadence", whose 16 tracks feature new and unreleased material spanning the band's entire career, as well as three covers, including songs from Tom Waits and Britney Spears. With artwork by longtime TROLLFEST collaborators, Swedish cartoonist Jonas Darnell and designer Terje Johnsen, the vinyl also includes an an email address that purchasers can contact to receive an MP3 download.

NINE INCH NAILS: 'Came Back Haunted' Video Released

"Came Back Haunted", the new video from NINE INCH NAILS, can be seen below. The clip was directed by filmmaker David Lynch. The song comes off "Hesitation Marks", the first NIN album since 2008's "The Slip", which will arrive on September 3. The CD features guest appearances from FLEETWOOD MAC guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and THE WHO touring bassist Pino Palladino.

NINE INCH NAILS mastermind Trent Reznor described "Hesitation Marks" as "much more electronic," although he added that the first single, "Came Back Haunted", is "familiar, it's very self-referential and purposely. I think that's the most like that there is on that record."

According to The Pulse Of Radio, Reznor took to the airwaves of Los Angeles radio station KROQ on Monday (June 24) to discuss "Hesitation Marks", the group's return and the recent departures of guitarist Adrian Belew and bassist Eric Avery from the lineup after just a few months. Reznor said about the latter, "It's been disruptive . . . you can spend a lot of time, like I've done, hypothesizing and imagining and projecting as to what it's going to be like with this chemistry and this recipe of people in a room playing music. And in reality, it rarely is that."

He added, "In the case of a couple people in the band, some switches were made and it's turned into something different . . . It's felt a wrench in the works at time, but at the same time it's made me rethink a lot of how we put this together and I think where we're ending up at a place that's much truer to where NINE INCH NAILS should be and better in the long run."

Asked why he kept the recording of "Hesitation Marks" a secret for a year, Reznor responded, "I still owe Interscope a greatest-hits record. There was talk about doing a couple new tracks for the compilation under the NIN header . . . I started tinkering with a couple songs for NINE INCH NAILS. I felt inspired by what's happening. A couple songs led to a couple more songs and pretty soon it was a full-fledged, 'let's make an album.'"

NINE INCH NAILS has confirmed a lengthy North American tour for the fall, beginning on September 28 in St. Paul, Minnesota. The band will make its live return on July 26 at the Fuji Rock festival in Japan.

MINISTRY: First Taste Of 'From Beer To Eternity'

Video footage of the photo shoot for the cover art and collection of promotional pictures for MINISTRY's 13th studio album, "From Beer To Eternity", can be seen below. The CD will be released on September 6 via 13th Planet Records.

As fans of the band know, after last year there wasn't going to be another MINISTRY album, but as mastermind Al Jourgensen put it recently, "I had no choice."

Sessions for what would become "From Beer To Eternity" began last December at Jourgensen's 13th Planet compound in El Paso, Texas, with Jourgensen (who produced the album, composed the music and wrote the lyrics for all 11 songs), guitarists Mike Scaccia and Sin Quirin, drummer Aaron Rossi and bassist Tony Campos. Rough tracks for 18 songs were finished on December 19, and three days later, the 47-year old Scaccia died from a heart attack he suffered onstage while playing a live show with his band RIGOR MORTIS in Dallas, Texas. Jourgensen, Quirin, Rossi and Campos were absolutely devastated.

"We have never, in the history of MINISTRY, ever had a tracking session like that before," states Jourgensen. "Everything went so smoothly, it was surreal. And Mikey was so on fire and inspired, and really a driving force for this record."

After returning from Scaccia's funeral in Dallas, and shouldering the weight of grief as well as the desire to honor his fallen comrade, Jourgensen locked himself in his studio with his engineer and co-producer Sammy D'Ambruoso for three excruciating months. "There was no choice," Jourgensen says of the bittersweet production process. "During the tracking sessions, Mikey was smiling and going, 'You know what, Al? This is by far and away the best MINISTRY album we've ever done together. This is awesome.'

"I'm super proud of 'From Beer To Eternity', because it's my tribute to Mikey's incredible talent, and I feel it honors him and all of the years we spent together making music."

From the schizophrenic opening cut, the sarcasm-dripping, sound effect-laden "Hail To His Majesty (Peasants)" to the thrash-punk riffs andbooming bass reverberations of "Punch In The Face", to "Change Of Luck", a song that Jourgensen wrote directly about Scaccia's death, "From Beer To Eternity" pulls no punches, sounding at once familiar, yet completely fresh and inspired. The release also includes "Side F/X Include Mikey's Middle Finger / TV4", which old-school MINISTRY fans will recognize as a continuum in a series of TV songs that began in the mid-1990s, and underscores Scaccia's birthright as one of the greatest metal guitarists in the world.

"PermaWar", the first single from "From Beer To Eternity", will drop digitally via iTunes in late July as a three-track maxi single. Additionally, 13th Planet Records will be releasing special products for "From Beer To Eternity", including a special limited-edition digipak with 13 tracks, a special FanBox edition, as well as vinyl and limited-edition 12-inch picture discs.

MINISTRY will support "From Beer To Eternity" with a cavalcade of music videos, off-the-wall making-of digital clips, and an ongoing "dog-blog" commentary by Jourgensen's two Labradors, Lemmy and Ozzy, who were present every step of the way during the recording and mixing of "From Beer To Eternity", and have launched their own Facebook page.

But wait, there's more. In addition to "From Beer To Eternity" coming in September, July 9 will see the release of Jourgensen's authorized biography, "Ministry: The Lost Gospels According To Al Jourgensen", penned by Jourgensen with Jon Wiederhorn on DaCapo Press. "Ministry" is a memoir both ugly and captivating, revealing Jourgensen as a man who lived a hard life his own way without making compromises. Then, the two-disc DVD "Ministry: Enjoy the Quiet - Live at Wacken 2012" debuts at the already sold-out Wacken Open Air 2013 festival in Germany August 1-3. Shot live in concert at one of MINISTRY's final shows of the band's 2012 tour at Wacken Open Air in front of 75,000 fans, the DVD features "New World Order", "99 Percenters", "Ghouldiggers", "Psalm 69", "Thieves", "Just One Fix" and "Khyber Pass".

CRO-MAGS Frontman Says His Band Isn't Suing Anyone

CRO-MAGS frontman John Joseph has denied that the band is suing its founder, Harley Flanagan, over an incident in New York City on July 6, 2012 when Harley allegedly attacked two members of the group's current lineup during the CBGB Festival.

According to the New York Post, Michael Couls and William Berardo are suing Harley in civil court, claiming that he slashed Berardo in the left eye with a five-inch hunting knife and bit Couls' arm. Also named in the lawsuit is the East Village venue Webster Hall where the event was held.

"The uninvited defendant, Harley Flanagan, gained access to the VIP area because the hall failed to hire sufficiently trained security personal to protect the plaintiffs," the Manhattan Supreme Court suit alleges.

In a posting on the band's Facebook page, Joseph writes: "The CRO-MAGS aren't suing anyone so get your f*cking fax straight people... our part-time fill in bass player is suing Webster Hall for his hospital bills. The CRO-MAGS aren't suing anyone. I don't give two fux about all this but when you outright post bullshit I'm gonna speak on it."

Flanagan was initially charged with felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the incident, but those charges were eventually dropped.

New York Natives last year published an interview with Flanagan in which Harley claimed that he was invited to the Webster Hall gig and had a VIP pass which he used to enter the venue. He said he went there with "the best of intentions" hoping to mend years of bickering and make the fans happy. After he was invited to the backstage dressing room, he said that instead of being welcomed, as he expected to be, he was jumped by a group of men.

Producer RICK RUBIN On BLACK SABBATH: My Goal Was To Get Them Back To Jamming

Legendary producer Rick Rubin spoke to Newsweek about his last 30 years — and how he's about to make history by having two consecutive chart-topping records by two different acts: BLACK SABBATH's long-awaited reunion album, "13", and Kanye West's "Yeezus".

Speaking about his collaboration with BLACK SABBATH, Rubin said: "I always request that artists overwrite. Write as much as possible — and then we can narrow down — because you never really know. The best song you write might be No. 25, not No. 12. For every SYSTEM OF A DOWN record, we've recorded probably 30 songs to get the 12 or 14 that are on the record. The same with [RED HOT] CHILI PEPPERS.

"An artist who has made a lot of records, sometimes they're not really up for that. It was a little bit of a struggle with BLACK SABBATH, for example. We never got up to 30. But they probably wrote more than 20. We probably recorded 16. And there are eight on the album. I just think they'd never done it before. But it made sense to me because in the past they were on a roll from album to album, and now they haven’t been a band together in 35 years. The idea that after 35 years the first 10 songs you write are perfect is unrealistic.

"Back in the day, BLACK SABBATH was essentially a jam band. That’s how they wrote. And they had gotten away from that. They were used to making demos: here's a click track, here's where the guitar riffs are. But what made BLACK SABBATH BLACK SABBATH was the way each of them interpreted what the others were playing. Those reactions create tension — they create the band's sound… My goal was to get BLACK SABBATH back to performing together — to jamming — because they are experts at it."

CINDERELLA Members Launch CHEAP THRILL

CINDERELLA bassist Eric Brittingham and guitarist Jeff LaBar have joined forces with vocalist/guitarist Brandon Gibbs (formerly of THE GIBBS BROTHERS) and drummer Troy Patrick Farrell (WHITE LION, GILBY CLARKE) in a new band called CHEAP THRILL.

CHEAP THRILL brings you a sound flavored with CINDERELLA tunes such as "Nobody's Fool", "Heartbreak Station" and "Hello Or Goodbye" from LaBar's soon-to-be-released CD, along with the newest song from Brandon's solo record, "This Town", which is currently featured on ESPN 2 for the NHRA season. This show is littered with popular covers and stadium rock songs.

When CINDERELLA isn't touring, Gibbs and Brittingham have always found themselves working together off and on over the last five years. With the recent addition of LaBar, the Nashville-based group CHEAP THRILL made its debut on the Monsters Of Rock cruise in March 2013, with two more rock and roll cruises immediately following.

Brittingham and LaBar are pumped about CHEAP THRILL and the opportunity to work together again and alongside Gibbs.

"Being able to transition from a three-piece acoustic show to a full band keeps the project fun and versatile," says Brittingham. "It's all about the music," adds Gibbs. "We have finetuned a product that will appeal to audiences of all ages."

In a recent interview with RockMusicStar, LaBar stated about CHEAP THRILL: "Brandon Gibb has been doing this for years with his brother. And Eric got involved with them a couple years ago and played bass for them, and they played as a trio. And Brandon called me about two months ago about joining up with them. He told me to learn three songs and we rehearsed a couple of times, and ever since we've been off to the races. We started out a few weeks ago in Florida, we played one acoustic set and then an electric set."

"We perform a few acoustic versions of CINDERELLA songs. It also has a bit of a modern music influence, because Brandon is a bit younger than Eric and me.

"When I joined this project, there was already a setlist. So, there are songs from the '90s and 2000s, as the setlist covers all decades. Since I joined, I brought in some songs that I enjoy singing, like some '70s songs such as PINK FLOYD and THE FACES. And the CINDERELLA songs that we do, have a bit of a country feel to them. But overall, Brandon also does his owns songs, we do some of my original songs, some CINDERELLA songs and some cool versions of some classic songs."

EVERGREY Guitarist To Release Debut Instrumental Album

Due on August 16 via Lion Music, "Pictures From A Time Traveller", the debut instrumental album from EVERGREY guitarist Marcus Jidell, features seven tracks of outstanding, diverse and top-shelf virtuoso guitar excellence.

Jidell is one of the most respected metal guitarists to have come out of Sweden since Yngwie Malmsteen. With a guitar style that has won him universal acclaim, Marcus is a current member of one of Sweden's biggest and hardest touring metal acts, EVERGREY, and previously has worked with prog-metallers ROYAL HUNT.

Marcus has a very personalized sound, extremely heavy at one end, yet extremely melodic at the other, all the time with a superb feel for phrasing and originality of song craft, and its these traits which are evident throughout "Pictures From A Time Traveller". On his goal for the album, Marcus says: "I wanted to make an instrumental album that was more then just shred. I wanted to make compositions that were interesting to listen to even if you're not a guitar player. In short, I wanted to write good music with electric instruments that didn't sound like anything I heard before".

While there is no doubt this is a guitar album, "Pictures From A Time Traveller" has its own unique voice boasting incredible utilization of dynamics and a variety of styles all of which paint a vast number of picture in the listeners mind, something Marcus was keen to express while writing.

"When I write I see a lot of pictures and colors and that's what I've been trying to make the listener feel," he says. "If you listen carefully to 'Arctica', for example, you might feel the cold wind, the ice and snow, the silence of the Arctic winter that suddenly breaks when you discover the big polar bear that has been sneaking upon you.. And you start to run."

Joining Marcus for the album is a stellar cast of backing musicians including his fellow EVERGREY bandmates Hannes Van Dahl and Johan Niemann, keyboardists Andre Andersen (ROYAL HUNT) and Rickard Nilsson, Svante Henrysson played some cello (ex-YNGWIE MALMSTEEN), vocalist Jennie-Ann Smith (AVATARIUM) added some backing vocals and even Marcus' father Rolf Jiddel threw down some cello. Marcus says: "I had the privilege to have some great musicians playing on this album and every one of them really put in their own feel in the songs which really made the songs grow! On some of the songs, I play everything except the drums. But I think that it is a great thing to put in other musicians now and then in the recording process, to get some fresh ideas and widen your view. Svante Henryson really put in some magic with his cello, for example."

The origins of "Pictures From A Time Traveller" date back some eight years from some demos Marcus put together in 2005. Then in 2008 began recording drums for the songs with Andreas Johansson. But Marcus wasn't happy with the results. "I worked for a month with the songs but just couldn't get the feel and sound I was looking for working by myself and without the knowledge and studio equipment that I needed, so I just got tired of it and stopped the process," he says.

In between touring, Marcus continued to work with other studio productions for ROYAL HUNT and EVERGREY, which saw his knowledge improve in how to record and mix music. Then in 2012, everything fell into place. "I found the old recordings and listened to the songs and felt they were rather good and it relit the fuse," he says. "I started to work on the songs again to finish the recordings that Andreas had played drums on. We used the drums we recorded five years ago on three of the songs but we had to re-record drums on 'Huldra' to get the groove right. That had nothing to do with how Andreas played originally, but how it was recorded. While on tour with EVERGREY, Hannes Van Dahl and I talked about him playing on some songs on the album too, so when we found the time we recorded those. Hannes plays drums on two of the songs and did a great job. Andre Andersen, Svante Henrysson, Rickard Nilsson, Jennie-Ann Smith and my father Rolf Jidell all helped me to make this album something special and I am thankful for their input."

DREAM THEATER Completes Mixing New Album

Progressive metal giants DREAM THEATER have completed mixing their new, self-titled album for a September 24 release via Roadrunner Records. The band's guitarist, John Petrucci, writes on Facebook: "[I] can't wait to share the new music with everyone!"

"Dream Theater" was recorded at Cove City Sound Studios in Glen Cove, New York, with founding guitarist John Petrucci producing and studio luminary Richard Chycki (AEROSMITH, RUSH) engineering and mixing. The album marks a brilliant new chapter for the always adventurous band, their first to have been written and recorded with drummer Mike Mangini wholly integrated into the creative process from the start.

"I see every new album as an opportunity to start over," says Petrucci. "To either build or improve upon a direction that has been evolving over time or to completely break new ground. This is the first self-titled album of our career and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We've fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic. We're incredibly excited about 'Dream Theater' and can't wait for everyone to hear it.”

"Dream Theater" will be available in a wide range of distinctive versions, including standard and special-edition CDs, 180-gram vinyl double LP, and a limited-edition box set. Pre-orders are scheduled to get underway sometime in July at the Roadrunner Records webstore.

Asked whether having drummer Mike Mangini involved in the songwriting process this time around has made a difference in the new CD's overall sound, keyboardist Jordan Rudess recently said: "It really has. This is the first album where Mike Mangini [who joined the band in Ocober 2010] has been there and really part of the writing process. He's such a sweet guy and he has so much energy, and it's just great to have that energy involved when we're writing the music, 'cause he'll come up with stuff that's really cool. We'll be composing along our merry way and stop to maybe look at the next part, and he offers this other perspective which we never had in the same way that we have it with him, which is that he has a super math brain — a rhythmic math brain; he's really an expert in that field, more so than myself or [guitarist] John Petrucci or anybody in the band — so he can say, 'Guys, if you play 10 measures at 7, and if you play triplets five times, and you do this and that, it's all gonna equal out in 21 measures. Go ahead and try it.' And at first, we're , like, 'What?' But he kind of sees that; he sees that map."

In a recent interview with Roadrunner Records, Petrucci stated about the making of DREAM THEATER's new CD: "First of all, it's been going great with [Mangini], and as much as we've been a band together for about 15 years, we haven't really experienced that process together. We've been in the studio for a few weeks now, and he's been amazing. Chemistry is great, the writing process and the whole vibe is great, and his role is to let his personality shine as a drummer, creatively and to have his input and his musical personality really come through. And I gotta tell you, it's happening. When people hear the drumming on this album, they're gonna be pretty freaked out. On the last album, he did a great job, but he wasn't there for the writing process and he was interpreting drum parts that I had programmed. Even though he used his creativity, of course, to change them up and do his thing, I feel like now he's just Mike Mangini unleashed. It's all him. It's all his creativity, all his decisions and ideas and man, the guy's an animal."

"Live At Luna Park", DREAM THEATER's live concert, which was previously scheduled for release in May via Eagle Rock Entertainment, will now drop in North America on November 5 as a Blu-ray, 2DVD, 2DVD + 3CD, Blu-ray + 3CD, deluxe edition with 40-page book, Blu-ray + 2DVD + 3CD, and digital video via iTunes.

"Live At Luna Park" was filmed over two nights in South America — home to one of DREAM THEATER's most ardent fanbases. The DVD was filmed August 19 and August 20, 2012 at Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina after a 15-month world tour, hitting 35 countries.

DEGRADEAD: 'For Better Or Worse' Video Released

"For Better Or Worse", the new video from Stockholm, Sweden-based melodic death metallers DEGRADEAD, can be seen below. The song comes off the band's fourth album, "The Monster Within", which will be released on August 23 via Metalville. The CD was recorded between January 14 and February 2 at Panic Room studios in Skara with producer Thomas "Plec" Johansson and marks the group's first release with new drummer Amit Mohla. According to the band, "This album ended up being the best DEGRADEAD album so far! More dynamic, more melodic, more thrashy, more of everything!"

Commented Johansson: "It has been great going back to the roots even on this one. No drum triggers or sample replacements used whatsoever, which is otherwise so commonplace in today's metal productions. We did it the hard way, with getting the right sounds from the start and having Amit actually playing the parts until we got the takes we needed, tuning the drums in between takes, switching snares for different songs etc... No plugins were used in the process either other than for very surgical tasks and special FX. All other processing are real chambers, hardware reverbs, delays, compression and EQ. Five times more work, but five times more fun and inspiring plus it's five times more fun to listen to."

DEGRADEAD's singer, Mikael Sehlin, recently joined fellow Swedes ENGEL as their new frontman.

Regarding what impact Sehlin's addition to ENGEL will have on his status in DEGRADEAD, DEGRADEAD said: "Mikael is still our vocalist and he is still 100% dedicated to DEGRADEAD and this will not affect DEGRADEAD."

DEGRADEAD's third album, "A World Destroyer", was released in North America on June 28, 2011 via Metalville Records. The CD was recorded at Peter Tägtgren's (HYPOCRISY, PAIN) Abyss studios in Pärlby, outside Ludvika, Sweden, with producer Jonas Kjellgren (SCAR SYMMETRY, CENTINEX, WORLD BELOW).

On August 6, 2010, DEGRADEAD played for their first time at the Wacken Open Air festival in Wacken. Germany. Their full set, as performed on the W.E.T Stage before an enthusiastic audience, along with many extras, is included on the DVD release, "Live At Wacken And Beyond", which was released on February 28, 2012 via Metalville Records. The disc also contains "From Tullinge To Hyderabad", a 50-minute documentary following DEGRADEAD from their first years in Tullinge, a small suburb south of Stockholm where the band was formed, to their successful tour of India in February 2011. It includes interviews, live clips and a lot of other "interesting stuff for the fans."

SLIPKNOT Drummer's SCAR THE MARTYR: New Video Teaser Available

A new two-minute video teaser for SCAR THE MARTYR, the new project formed by SLIPKNOT drummer Joey Jordison, can be seen below.

Recorded at Sound Farm Studios in Des Moines, Iowa, SCAR THE MARTYR's as-yet-untitled debut album was helmed by Rhys Fulber, whose production and mixing credits include FEAR FACTORY, ROB ZOMBIE, MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE, FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY and more. The CD is slated to arrive later this fall via Roadrunner Records.

Recognized globally as one of the best drummers in rock, Jordison is both a primary songwriter and the drummer for the Grammy Award-winning SLIPKNOT. The SCAR THE MARTYR recording sessions saw him behind the drum kit, while also playing bass on all songs, and rhythm guitar on all but two songs. The album was written by Joey and lead vocalist Henry Derek Bonner (BLOOD PROMISE), and joining them in the studio were keyboardist Chris Vrenna (NINE INCH NAILS), as well as guitarists Jed Simon (STRAPPING YOUNG LAD) and Kris Norris (DARKEST HOUR) who collectively handled all lead guitars on the album.

SCAR THE MARTYR sees Jordison treading in new sonic territory and expanding upon his already remarkable abilities as songwriter and performer. A searing rock record that draws elements from post-punk and industrial music to create an immersive and modern attack, SCAR THE MARTYR creates a menacing and enveloping palette of surging synthesizers layered under heavy guitars and Jordison's trademark precision drumming.

"With this project, I focused my efforts on writing for the better of the song," says Jordison. "I wasn't worried about flash or persona... It's all about writing a good solid song. I'm writing music that people can grasp and hold on to...something that resonates. If you don't have that, then you have nothing."

"I'd been working on new SLIPKNOT material since the end of the 'All Hope Is Gone' tour cycle, but I ended up with so much stuff I had to take a step back and stop working on it," he explained to Metal Hammer magazine. "The time wasn't right. But I came up with a bunch of material that was really killer and heavy and started taking some of it in a different direction. I started focusing on a lot of the post-punk and industrial stuff that I've always loved and started putting super heavy and brutal guitars over the top of it. That's how it started. It's taken me a couple of years to get to this point, but I can honestly say this is the most satisfied I've ever been in the studio. I can't wait for everyone to hear this shit."

The career of Joey Jordison is one that, by any measure, stands among the most creative, and impressive in the history of modern American rock and metal. It is a career that really has been many careers — musician, songwriter, and producer — from small town beginnings to global stardom. Jordison's journey has included an extraordinary string of hits, 11 platinum and 40 gold records, and a Grammy Award with SLIPKNOT as well as numerous industry accolades for his top tier musicianship and, above all, an immeasurable influence on countless fellow artists and passionate fans around the world.

SIRENIA: 'My Destiny Coming To Pass' Lyric Video Released

The official lyric video for the song "My Destiny Coming To Pass" from Norwegian/Spanish symphonic gothic metallers SIRENIA, can be seen below. The track comes off the band's sixth studio album, "Perils Of The Deep Blue", which will be released on June 28 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was produced by SIRENIA mainman Morten Veland, while the mixing and mastering was handled by Endre Kirkesola at Dub Studios in Oslo.

"Perils Of The Deep Blue" track listing:

01. Ducere Me In Lucem
02. Seven Widows Weep
03. My Destiny Coming To Pass
04. Ditt Endelikt
05. Cold Caress
06. Darkling
07. Decadence
08. Stille Kom Døden
09. The Funeral March
10. Profound Scars
11. A Blizzard Is Storming

Limited-edition-digipak bonus tracks:

12. Chains
13. Blue Colleen

"The writing process has been going on for about two years," stated Veland. "I always have ideas for new stuff, so I started writing even before we had released our previous album, 'The Enigma Of Life'. Most of it has been recorded in my own studio. I love to work there as I always feel inspired — plus we can take our time with whatever we do, for there is no time pressure. Just like for all of our previous albums, we also dropped by Sound Suite Studios in France — a great place that feels like home, too. This time we recorded the Marseille choir there that one can always hear on our records, as well as some of my acoustic guitar parts."

The album artwork was originally painted by Anne Stokes — though it wasn't intentionally created to be used as such, as Morten explained: "came across the artwork on the Internet and immediately fell in love with it for obvious reasons — it's no secret that I've always been fascinated by Greek mythology and sirens. So we got in touch with Anne and luckily she granted us the permits to use it for the record. I actually drew the inspiration for the album title, 'Perils Of The Deep Blue', from the artwork. In my opinion, it's the perfect SIRENIA cover — there was no way we could have let that opportunity slip away!"

SIRENIA's last album, "The Enigma Of Life", was released on January 21, 2011 via Nuclear Blast Records.

In 2008, SIRENIA recruited singer Ailyn (born: Pilar Giménez García) as the replacement for Monika Pedersen, who left the group a year earlier after only one album due to "musical differences."

Ailyn was best known as a former contestant on the Spanish version of "The X Factor", the biggest television talent competition in Europe.

TRISTANIA: Audio Samples Of Entire 'Darkest White' Album

A six-minute YouTube clip containing audio samples of all the tracks that appear on "Darkest White", the seventh studio album from Norwegian/Italian metallers TRISTANIA, can be seen below.

"Darkest White" was released on May 31 via Napalm Records. The CD artwork, painted by artist Eliran Kantor (TESTAMENT, SODOM, HATEBREED), can be seen below.

"Darkest White" track listing:

01. Number
02. Darkest White
03. Himmelfal
04. Requiem
05. Diagnosis
06. Scarling
07. Night on Earth
08. Cathedral (limited-edition bonus track)
09. Lavender
10. Cypher
11. Arteries

The band wanted a dark and disturbing cover, and Kantor instantly knew what they asked for after being presented with the music and lyrics.

"What he came up with turned out to be more than what we had dared to hope for," says TRISTANIA guitarist Anders Høyvik Hidle. "His painting for the front cover made us speechless, Eliran totally understood our vision with this album, and the artwork fits perfectly to the music and lyrics."

With "Darkest White", TRISTANIA venture into a considerably darker soundscape than on their previous album, both musically and lyrically. The emotional span of the album is bigger, ranging from the most brutal primal aggression to the most fragile and poignant moments. The album features an array of grand arrangements, doomy moods, and elaborate harmonies blended with intense growling; a flamboyant display of outstanding vocal performances. "Darkest White" is produced and mixed by Christer André Cederberg.

Comments TRISTANIA bassist Ole Vistnes: "After the release of 'Rubicon' in 2010, I felt that we had opened the door to our new musical landscape, but that we still had a lot of places to explore creatively. With 'Darkest White', we have dug deeper, searched wider and reached higher to create the most musically challenging and emotionally involving album we possibly could. Like all TRISTANIA albums, I feel this one is detached from musical rules and genre expectations, and perfectly represents the musical freedom that I so much love about TRISTANIA.

"During the writing and recording of the album, we worked hard to create the album we had in our minds, but we were also careful to let the songs live a life on their own. We didn't set out to make the album technically outstanding or theoretically perfect, but we followed our hearts in all parts of the writing and production. I'm proud of 'Darkest White', mostly because of the uncompromising honesty and attitude that saturated everything from the songwriting and recording to the mix."

TRISTANIA is:

Mariangela Demurtas (vocals)
Kjetil Nordhus (vocals)
Anders Høyvik Hidle (guitar and vocals)
Ole Vistnes (bass and backing vocals)
Gyri Losnegaard (guitar)
Einar Moen (keyboards)
Tarald Lie (drums)

VATTNET VISKAR To Release 'Sky Swallower' In September

After releasing a self-titled EP last year to critical acclaim, New Hampshire's VATTNET VISKAR is now ready to unleash its debut full-length album, "Sky Swallower", this fall via Century Media Records. Due out September 9 in Europe, the CD was recorded at Universal Noise Storage with producer Brett Boland and features eight tracks of crushingly ambient, blackened doom metal.

Hailing from the small town of Plaistow, VATTNET VISKAR is anything but small. Formed in the fall of 2010, the band has quickly risen amongst the ranks of U.S. black metal acts with the aforementioned EP, which was named one of the best metal albums of 2012 by Pitchfork.com, Stereogum.com, and countless others. Not content to keep their blackened-doom alchemy confined to the studio, however, they back it up with a thundering live performance. Having already shared the stage with such titans as BLACK ANVIL, INQUISITION and WOODS OF YPRES, they have left their mark throughout the U.S. with a seemingly endless string of shows, including a stop at last year's SXSW festival, playing three shows throughout the event.

IHSAHN - Infos about new album

"My new album is now finalized by the very capable hands of Jens Bogren and will soon be on its way to Candelight Records. We´ve not set a release date yet, but sometime this autumn for sure. Title and more information about it will be revealed later. Ritxi Ostáriz is nearly there with the artwork, and first photo session with Bjørn Tore Moen was done this week."

"Festivals played so far are Roadburn, Maryland Deathfest and Sweden Rock (my first show in Sweden ever!). This weekend we play Hellfest for the third time, and next jobs are at Tuska, Bangalore Open Air (first show in India ever!), Metaldays, Wacken Open Air and Brutal Assult."

"Ray Holroyd from Revolution Harmony is behind the song We Are featuring myself, Serj Tankian and Devin Townsend. All proceeds from the single will be donated to Buskaid, a charity that provides free music lessons and instruments to children in the townships of South Africa."
