KAURA To Give Away One New Track From New CD/DVD Each Week Until Release Date; Album Stream Now Available

California natives KAURA (pronounced kay-aura) were born from the vision of infusing the aggressive power of hard, melodic rock with the haunting and ethereal sounds of ancient instruments. The band will release their debut full-length CD/DVD, That Which Defines Us, on September 20th.

The band announced that they will be giving away one new track cut from That Which Defines Us, each week up until the release date. A new track can be downloaded weekly at this location, where the new album can also be streamed in its entirety now.

Produced by singer Malcolm Guess, the album is a testament of dedication, taking over two years to record with the assistance of rock luminaries such as Sylvia Massey (DANZIG, TOOL, SYSTEM OF A DOWN), Ken Andrews (A PERFECT CIRCLE, FAILURE) and Michael Romanowski (DREDG). Central to the album’s sound were instruments that the band collected on their travels to India, Thailand, Bali, Cambodia, Laos, and Nepal.

“We were really drawn to the sounds of these instruments because they are not traditionally heard in modern rock music,” explains guitarist Ben Rojas.

Drummer Benjamin Jones adds, “We have always strived to create our own unique voice and incorporating these instruments helps us do that and create a really expansive depth of sound.”

The DVD portion of the set includes two music videos directed by drummer Benjamin Jones for the songs ‘Ephemeral Fall’ and ‘Silence Speaks Louder’. It also features an hour long "Making Of The Album" feature, and footage of the band’s adventures collecting instruments during their travels.

Tracklisting:

'Inovocation'
'Sera Phi'
'One Becomes Two'
'Ephemeral Fall'
'Solace'
'Silence Speaks Louder'
'Apathy'
'Alarmico Saturn'
'2C&B'
'If This Were To End'
'Tether's End'
'A Lament For Change'

MEGADETH DAVE MUSTAINE On Possible Project With METALLICA: \'Of Course I Would Do It\'

The Boston Phoenix recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

The Boston Phoenix: You seem like you would be demanding as a bandleader — almost like a metal version of James Brown.

Mustaine: [Laughs] Bite your tongue! I don't really know Mr. Brown very well so I don't know if that's a compliment or a friendly insult. I know that for us, what we do is try to make it as enjoyable for the listener as possible. When you're playing extreme music, you can't be sending out chocolate and flowers to your staff after you're done — you know? It's like everyone is eating broken glass nachos and stuff like that, so you gotta have that slugging each other in the arm kind of thing. I know that would seem like it's demanding, but when you have people that are dedicated to what we're doing here and they're all at the top of their game, there really isn't much to be demanded, you're just kind of calling out the plays and people do it. It's a very heads-up football kind of thing; I'm calling audible quarterback plays and taking the whole approach with MEGADETH like it's very militant, everybody has their roles, and when it's time for the show to start, the lights go out, it's synchronized, it's like a pit crew. You see these NASCAR guys come in and they have a car completely changed and filled up with gas in 12 seconds — that's what my guys are like, they're all top-notch professionals.

The Boston Phoenix: Why do you think some people are having trouble buying the fact there is peace between all the ["Big Four"] bands?

Mustaine: I feel sorry for people like that — you wonder what makes them tick. Do they get up in the morning and walk into the kitchen and hit themselves in the face with a frying pan? How were they rendered so ignorant? I don't know. Some people need something to live for. I tend to go through my day seeing if I can bring happiness into people's lives instead of going around talking scuttlebutt about bands and who doesn't like who.

The Boston Phoenix: METALLICA just announced that they were doing an album with Lou Reed and were in the studio with Ray Davies. Could you ever see yourself doing a similar project with them?

Mustaine: Well, I already did a project with METALLICA a long time ago. You mean another project with METALLICA? I dunno. . . . If they're digging up old guys to rock with, those guys are a little bit older than I am, I may have to have my AARP card to do it [laughs]. No, of course I would do it — that was my band. MEGADETH was what the next logical step was in my musical career. It was a natural progression, but if an opportunity came for us to play again — I think what would be ideal, and I've talked to James [Hetfield] about this before. And he didn't say "No," that he and I and Lars [Ulrich] and [MEGADETH bassist] David Ellefson should do a record together and see what happens. Not as a band or anything like that, but something to donate the money to charity. We're all getting a lot older now and just the fact that we're talking was a great start. Playing together is even better, and the idea of us doing something together could be just too much for my little brain to handle and it might just explode.

The Boston Phoenix: You've got two kids: Justis and Electra. I have to ask about the irony in those two names.

Mustaine: He's not called Justis because of "…And Justice For All" — that's shallow. It's spelled the Old English way and "Justis" is a form of Jesus which is another form or "righteous." And Electra, it had nothing to do with the record label Elektra [where METALLICA spent the majority of their career]. We were gonna call her Savannah, but I didn't like that name because it was some trollop that blew her face off or something because she was an old porn star, and that particularly didn't ring well with me. We were at church one morning and they were dedicating the child there, and they said her name was Savannah and that it meant "barren plains," and I thought, "We're not naming our kid 'barren plains' — sheesh, we might as well just call her 'scorched earth.' " We had looked at some other names and Pam [Dave's wife] thought that the name Amber was pretty and I looked up the Greek meaning of Amber which means "dawn of light," the beginning of every day. And Electra is the same thing as Amber in Greek, so I thought it was great. Now, we do have that one kid that we gave up for adoption named Puppets. . . .

There was also a tribute to rock guitar legend Jimi Hendrix with an all-star lineup which included most of the stars attending the show for the grand finale of "Fire".

Commented Sally Steele: "I was really happy that so many of my favorite artists came out to celebrate my publication's seven-year anniversary to make it an amazing rock-royalty-filled event. It was truly a historic night in rock and roll for Las Vegas! One thing I can say is that it might be hard to top this show next year — but we will try!"

NOVEMBERS DOOM Parts Ways With Drummer, Seeks Replacement

Chicago's NOVEMBERS DOOM has parted ways with drummer Sasha Horn. The band states, "For once this isn't your typical 'musical differences' excuse; this is simply due to distance and Sasha's pursuit and focus in other directions, it became clear to all of us, he was no longer able to contribute the same dedication to NOVEMBERS DOOM as the rest of the band. We wish Sasha the best in his future endeavors.

"As for the future of NOVEMBERS DOOM, we are currently seeking to fill this position. Anyone interested in this opportunity can contact us through drummer@novembersdoom.com. Several projects are already in the works, and [while] it's too soon for any formal announcements, we can assure you, NOVEMBERS DOOM's best days are yet to come."

"What Could Have Been", the latest video from NOVEMBERS DOOM, can be viewed below. The clip has a cinematic feel and was once again helmed by Cage XXI Enterprises and director Tony Myles, who was responsible for the band's "Autumn Reflection" and "A Eulogy for the Living Lost" videos.

"What Could Have Been", which features a guest appearance by Dutch singer Anneke Van Giersbergen (AGUA DE ANNIQUE, THE GATHERING), comes off NOVEMBERS DOOM's eighth full-length album, "Aphotic", which was released on May 10 via The End Records. The CD features other special guests on several tracks: world-renowned violinist Rachel Barton Pine (EARTHEN GRAVE) lends her talent on both "What Could Have Been" and "The Dark Host"; finally, the man behind the mixing board, Dan Swanö (NIGHTINGALE, EDGE OF SANITY, BLOODBATH), adds his vocal touch to "Of Age and Origin", also offering rare appearance of his mighty growl!

MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP Singer GARY JOHN BARDEN To Release \'Eleventh Hour\' In October

Escape Music has set an October 1 release date for MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP singer Gary John Barden's new solo album, "Eleventh Hour".

Gary Barden belongs to THE voice of British hard rock. The first time Barden appeared in the scene was as part of the newly formed MSG (MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP) founded by the former SCORPIONS guitarist of the same name. Their first collaboration resulted in the highly acclaimed album "The Michael Schenker Group", which was released in 1980. Besides the great songs and the great guitar output Barden's voice was one of the reasons why this album became a huge success and allowed the band to hit the road in Europe, Japan and the USA. Their second album, "MSG", saw the light of day in 1981 and followed an even more melodic direction than its predecessor. After the following world tour, Barden was informed that he was no longer part of the band and replacement was found soon in ex-RAINBOW singer Graham Bonnet. Chrysalis, however, released a live disc recorded in Japan by the original MSG entitled "One Night At Budokan".

Searching for a new band, Barden started to write some songs with THIN LIZZY guitarist Gary Moore which later on ended up on Moore's "Corridor of Power" release. Their working period was short and so was the collaboration between Bonnet and Schenker. Bonnet sang on the 1982 record "Assault Attack", but BARDEN was back with MSG for some live appearances including Reading Festival in the same year and the 1983 record "Built to Destroy". The label's pressure to steer more into a commercial direction made the band quit business in 1984.

Barden moved on and found a new home in the business together with ex-THIN LIZZY six-string Brian Robertson and the band STATETROOPER, who put out their highly acclaimed self-titled debut album in 1987 and played a couple of live shows in the following months. "Statetrooper" was reissued on CD by Escape Music.

After a long break, Barden returned to the scene with PRAYING MANTIS' "The Power of Ten" and the live album "Captured Alive in Tokyo City" (1996). In 2000, Barden hit the road again for a couple of live shows with COMPANY OF SNAKES and founded the band SILVER together with Michael Voss (CASANOVA) and Bernie Tormé (IAN GILLAN). STATETROOPER finally reunited in 2004 and put out the classy new record "The Calling".

The Escape Music album "Past & Present" marked the first solo album by Gary Barden and offered a very personal collection of new, exciting interpretations of some all-time MSG classics, a selection of songs that both suited Gary Barden and MSG fans! With his longtime pal Michael Voss (CASANOVA, BONFIRE) and a couple of friends he went back to the roots to perform his bluesy smoky songs that will touch your soul and are exemplified on the release "Agony and the Xtasy". In 2007 the more rockier "Love and War" was released by Escape Music and it has been a long anticipated wait for the next chapter.

Gary now presents us with "Eleventh Hour", which features 11 tracks of hard rock brilliance. These new songs are fresh and exciting and Gary has poured his heart and soul into them. Once again Michael Voss is ever present and the end result is just perfect. This is a hard-hitting rock album that highlights what a great singer Gary is, his contribution to the British rock scene is just legendary.

"Eleventh Hour" track listing:

01. Baghdad
02. Fallen By The Wayside
03. Child Of Sorrow
04. What You Wanna Do
05. We Are Dead
06. All In
07. Blackmail

GORGOROTH - New Album Delayed Due To \"Financial Issues\"

Infernus and GORGOROTH were informed this weekend by Regain Records that because of the label's current financial situation, it will once again be necessary for the label to postpone the release of Gorgoroth's upcoming album Under The Sign Of Hell 2011, which was scheduled for release on August 29th.

According to a Gorgoroth update, "the master tapes were handed over to Regain by the band in April this year, and so it is of course very disappointing for the band that the label for the second time is not able to meet the set release date. Therefore, to avoid this happening again, no new release date will be given by the band until Regain can sort out their problems and provide a new date with 100% certainty."

As previously reported, on Under The Sign Of Hell 2011, Pest and Infernus repeat their roles as vocalist and guitarist/bassist, respectively, from the original 1996 recording, while Tomas Asklund does the drums.

KAMELOT Guitarist Thomas Youngblood - \"Now That We Have Our Own Record Label, We’re Looking At A Lot Of The Back Catalogue And Ways We Can Re-Acquire The Albums\"

Mark Morton at the Heavy Metal Examiner recently spoke with KAMELOT guitarist Thomas Youngblood. An excerpt from the interview is available below:

Q: Are you bothered at all that your earlier albums are out-of-print?

Yopungblood: "(Laughs) I guess there are pros and cons to that. Of course, those records don’t really belong to us, because it was a time when the record deals were really bad. I mean, we haven’t seen a penny from those record sales. But of course, you want to have your history out there for people to purchase. So I think it’s a bit of a double-edged sword. I think now that we have our own record label, we’re looking at a lot of the back catalogue and ways we can re-acquire them so we can remaster and reissue them."

Q: How did KMG Recordings come about, anyway?

Youngblood: "Well, the idea of having our own record label has been talked about for many years now. We talked to a lot of labels about releasing Poetry For The Poisoned here in the US, and we felt that we didn’t have the belief that we had in the people who wanted to support us with their own label. So that’s what we have now; we have people who understand Kamelot – they understand our fans. And the record sold in the first week almost double what the last record sold with the previous record company, so obviously it was the right decision to make.

We keep all the rights, and we keep all the control over how the band is marketed; because we know our fans more than anybody sitting in an office who has a hundred other bands to worry about. It was a risk, but since the album has been out, it was a risk worth taking, and we have set a precedent for the future."

ONE WITHOUT Sign To Wormholedeath; Announce Release Date For New Album

Swedish Modern Metal band ONE WITHOUT has signed a deal with Italian label Wormholedeath (sublabel of Aural Music Group).

One Without will release their second album Sweet Relief on CD world-wide on the 19th of October. It has already been released as a free digital download online.

Guitarist Kenny Boufadene commented: "We have been discussing this cooperation for some time, and how we would be able to work together since we already released the album for free digitally. Wormholedeath have been really cool about this and show their support for how we want to approach our fans and actually encourage us to work in this way. This cooperation gives us the opportunity to release Sweet Relief on an even bigger scale, while at the same time we keep our integrity and the respect for our fans. When we were contacted by Carlo Bellotti at Wormholedeath, we didn´t realize who he was and what he could do for us, but after our first phone talk we didn´t have any worries at all, this was a label we wanted to work with and that has ideas and forward-thinking that is exactly in line with how we feel. Wormholedeath understands what we want and how we want to do it, and we couldn´t be happier with this cooperation. We look forward to a long and prosperous relationship with Wormholedeath"

CHASMA Ink Deal With Moribund Records

Moribund Records has announced the signing of CHASMA. A trio from Portland, Oregon, the band are set to release their debut, Declarations Of The Grand Artificer, later this year. With three songs clocking in at nearly 33 minutes, Chasma's Declarations Of The Grand Artificer "is a bewildering but above all transcendent record, an epic recasting of classic black metal into otherworldly shapes and a plausibly modern contour," according to a press release.

A specific release date for the album will be announced shortly.

"Musically, we are influenced by new millenium-era French black metal and DC screamo," says the band. "And bands like WEAKLING, JOYLESS, AMESEOURS and MAJORITY RULE. We are influenced by the intensity and passion of our brotherhood as musicians and try to express that passion through dimension bending riffs. We don't really fit the black metal label; we consider ourselves either noir nouveau ['new black'] or bright metal."
