THERION Announces New Touring Bassist
Bassist Nalley Påhlsson of Swedish progressive/experimental metallers THERION announced yesterday (Thursday, July 22) that would sit out the band's upcoming European headlining tour in order to focus on his personal life. Christofer Johnsson, the creative force behind the group, has now released the following statement regarding THERION's bassist situation:
"Now that we have posted Nalle(y)'s message to the fans, I'll give some comments on it myself.
"Naturally, it may sound worrisome that there has been announced two changes in the live lineup in such a short time frame. But the Nalle situation is not something that has happened recently; we have known this could be the case since last year and we have had a replacement ready for months.
"Nalle told us immediately about his new family situation in the beginning of the year and given the fact he periodically had really tough drinking problems, we thought it was the right thing to do, to stay away from long tours and deal with the problems and be home with the kids instead. The band can always get somebody else to play the bass, but his kids only have one dad. And they need him in good shape.
"Some things are simply more important in life than heavy metal and beer. We also applaud his bold decision to start studying at his age, so that he will have options other than music for making a living in the future.
"Kudos!
"The reason we waited with announcing this was that we wanted to play these Mexican shows and European festivals with Nalle and avoid the funeral atmosphere of everyone knowing someone is about to leave (or take a break, as in this case).
"What about Nalle in the future?
"We have had discussions in the band if we should get another bass player, but we have decided to keep him as a member of the band and wait and see. It is possible that we will have him playing on the albums and have a live bass player for touring. One thing is sure, though, I've never been more happy with the bass on an album than with Nalle's work on [THERION's forthcoming CD] 'Sitra Ahra' and it would be awesome to continue to work with him.
"So who's gonna play bass on the tour? It will be Waldemar Sorychta [pictured below], an artist mainly known for his skills as a guitarist and songwriter with his own bands GRIP INC., ENEMY OF THE SUN, EYES OF EDEN and DESPAIR. He also created a big name as a producer, working with bands like LACUNA COIL, MOONSPELL, THE GATHERING, SAMAEL, TIAMAT, etc.
"I got in contact with Waldemar when I made the 'Vovin' album back in 1997. He did some additional guitar on 'Draconian Trilogy' and also recorded some stuff that would not make it to the album (it was later released on [1999's] 'Crowning of Atlantis' instead). I was impressed with his skills, so when me and drummer Sami [Karppinen] went down to Germany to record the song 'The Crowning Of Atlantis' one year later, and I got stuck not getting the right groove in the rhythm guitars of that song (it's a pretty difficult type of tempo), we gave him a call. He showed up and I explained what I thought was missing. He grabbed the guitar and a couple of takes later, it was nailed to tape exactly like I wanted it.
"Fast forward and many years later, I'm looking to find a replacement for [lead guitarist] Kristian Niemann. Waldemar was on my list of interesting guitarists, but he was already engaged with other bands at the time, and I was also still trying to persuade the amazing Lori Linstruth that THERION was the band where she belonged (an idea that Kristian Niemann heavily supported as well, actually). In the end, I ended up working with Waldemar as a session guitarist doing most of the rhythm guitars (new talent Christian Vidal was brought into the band just in time to record the solos). I recalled Waldemar saying he did a lot of jobs as a bass player as well, so when the need of a live bass player occurred, he was naturally one of the top names on our list.
"He's gonna do a fantastic job on the tour and being a very nice guy as well, I think we're all gonna have a really good time on tour together."
"Sitra Ahra" will be released in North America on October 26 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was mixed at the legendary Polar Studios in Stockholm by Lennart Östlund (LED ZEPPELIN, ABBA). The cover artwork was created by Thomas Ewerhard, who worked on all of the band's most recent releases in addition to collaborating with EDGUY, AVANTASIA, RAGE and HAMMERFALL, among others.
"Sitra Ahra" was mastered in New York and it features the following track listing:
01. Sitra Ahra
02. Kings Of Edom
03. Unguentum Sabbati
04. Land Of Canaan
05. Hellequin
06. 2012
07. Cu Chulain
08. Kali Yoga III
09. The Shells Are Open
10. Din
11. After The Inquisition: Children
THERION recently recruited Christian Vidal from Argentina as the band's new guitarist.
Vidal made his live debut with THERION on June 4, 2010 in Mexico City.
Christofer Johnsson announced in May 2009 that vocalist Thomas Vikström (ex-CANDLEMASS) had become a permanent member of THERION.
THERION's latest CD/DVD, "The Miskolc Experience", was released in June 2009 via Nuclear Blast Records.

GEOFF TATE Says Next QUEENSRŸCHE Album Will See Band Venturing \'Into Some New Territories\'
Doug Elfman of the Las Vegas Review-Journal recently conducted an interview with QUEENSRŸCHE frontman Geoff Tate about the band's current cabaret tour, featuring burlesque and go-go dancers, ballerinas, drag queens, jugglers and contortionists. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.
On that fans that come to see the cabaret shows:
"The audience is really fun to watch. Some people dress to the nines, in tuxedos and suits. Women wear slinky dresses.
"One person came dressed as a giant mouse — I don't know what that's all about."
"[Fans wear] lots of makeup, and weird hats, and scarves, and beads — and incredible shoes, I've gotta say," he says.
"It's kind of like if you took the 'Moulin Rouge' movie and mixed it up with 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show', and added heavy metal and a giant mouse. You've gotta be really dedicated to wear a giant mouse costume."
On whether QUEENSRŸCHE is changing its music to that oompa-cabaret style:
"We define cabaret on our own terms. Our albums and live presentations tend to be serious. This show is not serious at all. We've taken all of our less-serious music and constructed a show out of it. It's really a good time. It's fun, tongue-in-cheek and outrageous."
"There are some select cities that kind of have cabaret scenes — San Francisco, Seattle, New York and L.A. It's one of those types of performance arts that's kind of underground.
"I think once audiences see it, they become enamored with it, and they start seeking it out."
On how he went bald to support a friend who's battling cancer (she's on the mend) and enjoyed his hairless pate so much, he kept the "nice summer 'do'":
"It becomes liberating. You feel faster, more efficient, aerodynamic.
"You spend all this money on [hair] products, and time spent styling it and combing it. And you have to have all these utensils and tools to take care of your hair.
"Then once you shave your head, you don't need all that stuff. You can focus on other things you want to do, or obsess about.
"The first time I shaved my head was '92, I think.
"I shaved it at night. Then I went to bed and woke up the next morning, and I went to the bathroom mirror to shave my face and said, 'Oh my God! Who is that in the mirror?!' I had forgotten I had done it. It was a shocking experience."
On QUEENSRŸCHE's upcoming album, set for release in 2011:
"It's a progression away from where we've been — into some new territories. [It's a] very modern approach to what we do — modernizing our sound a bit more. . . It's kind of a modern approach to song arrangement — utilizing different sound effects and sounds sources; playing the instruments in a different way than what we have before; really experimenting a lot with the structure of rhythm and bringing it into what's modern.
"Next year is our 30th anniversary. We've done a lot of different kinds of records at different times. We're definitely trying to make a record of the time, rather than something of a different time. How's that for vague?"

Report: AXL ROSE Lawsuit Gets Off To A Touchy Start
Press Telegram.com reports: Dueling lawsuits involving GUNS N' ROSES front man Axl Rose and his former manager began on a sour note, so a judge said [Friday] she may appoint a third party help them strike a more pleasant chord.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Rita Miller blamed attorneys for Rose and Irving Azoff for problems during a recent deposition that Azoff's attorneys suspended before it was over.
Rose's lawyer, Sasha Frid, said the questions he asked got Azoff so upset that the manager threw a copy of the Wall Street Journal at the attorney.
Azoff's counsel, Steve Rothschild, said he was present at the deposition and denies that happened.

Costa Rica\'s Catholic Church Asks Black Metal Band MARDUK For Respect
InsideCostaRica.com reports that Costa Rica's Catholic church is calling for respect from the Swedish "black metal" band MARDUK, who will be making an appearance in Costa Rica next week.
MARDUK has been strongly criticized by religious groups for its anti-Christian lyrics and even branding the band as "satanic."
Mario Segura, Catholic priest and spokesperson for the Curia Metropolitana, said "they should have more respect because they are sacred things," referring to the band's use of religious articles, like an inverted cross in its album cover art.
Segura said he considers that this type of music and message cannot encourage any good in Costa Rica's youth.
MARDUK will be in Costa Rica on July 29 at the Pepper Disco Club (formerly The City). The band last made an appearance in Costa Rica in 2003.
EM3 Producciones, promoter of the event, said the Thursday show is for those 18 years of age and over and that the band will not be performing any type of ritual on stage, just perform its music.

KEEP OF KALESSIN Vocalist Joins HELLISH OUTCAST
Thebon from Norwegian extreme metallers KEEP OF KALESSIN has been recruited as the new vocalist for Bergen, Norway-based up-and-coming death-thrasheres HELLISH OUTCAST. He will replace Sjalg Otto Unnison, who has decided to leave the group in order to concentrate on LEADSLEDGE.
Thebon, whose new role will in no way affect his work with KEEP OF KALESSIN, is already rehearsing with HELLISH OUTCAST, and laying down the vocals for the band's upcoming album. His first live appearance with the band will take place at this year's Hole in the Sky festival in Bergen, Norway, where HELLISH OUTCAST is due to appear at the Hits for Kidz event on Saturday, August 28.
Formed in 2001 in Bergen by guitarist Martin Legreid, bassist Mads Mowinckel (BREED) and drummer Mads Lilletvedt (BYFROST), HELLISH OUTCAST quickly gained a reputation as one of the most extreme live bands in Bergen's underground scene. The band's first release was the controversial EP "Raping - Killing - Murder", and the new album, which is titled "Your God Will Bleed", will follow in the lyrical footsteps laid down in the EP, with its exploration of the violence and brutality in the world today, but, according to the band, the music promises to be even more aggressive. | 0 | |

WATAIN Poster Silk-Screen Printed Using Real, Human Blood
Steven Heller of PrintMag.com's "The Daily Heller" reports that the poster (see below) for the Swedish black metal band WATAIN was designed by the Paris-founded, New York-based designer Metastazis and was silk-screen printed using real, human blood.
Metastazis says his studio is "dedicated to the most scandalous yet refined forms of expression." Founded in 1999 by Valnoir, and joined by "almost nazi-gay illustrator DJ Holowestcoast and recently by the post-soviet arrogant doll Anastasia Ilyna," they have shined up black metal with high production values and theatrical staging.
Read more from PrintMag.com.
WATAIN's fourth album, "Lawless Darkness", entered the official chart in Sweden at position No. 26 and dropped to No. 37 the following week.
"Lawless Darkness" sold around 1,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 42 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.
"Lawless Darkness" was released in Europe on June 7 in a limited three-panel digipack edition with die-cut and a cover of DEATH SS' "Chains of Death" as a bonus track.
"Reaping Death", the new CD single from WATAIN, which was exclusively distributed in Sweden via Sweden Rock Magazine, was certified gold in the band's home country on April 21 by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry for sales in excess of 10,000 copies. (Note: Each copy of the magazine sold in Sweden was counted towards the certification.)
WATAIN will embark on a European headlining tour in the fall. Support on the trek will come from DESTROYER 666. A U.S. run with BEHEMOTH will follow in November.

STEVEN ADLER On Possible GUNS N\' ROSES Reunion: \'It\'s What So Many People Really Want\'
Former GUNS N' ROSES drummer Steven Adler spoke to Billboard.com about his new autobiography, "My Appetite For Destruction: Sex & Drugs & Guns N' Roses".
"It's so healing, getting all those things out of my system," says Adler, who was fired from the band in 1990 and battled severe drug addiction, even suffering a stroke, before reaching his current state of sobriety.
"You can't take 30 years of pain and all that stuff and just get rid of it immediately, but at least I'm starting to get it out and I'm starting to become my own person again. I wasted so much of my life, it's great to have survived and be living again."
Adler's new band, ADLER'S APPETITE, is in the midst of a 50-city North American tour, after which the group plans to record an EP with producer Anthony Focx (VINCE NEIL, BUCKCHERRY), with sessions for a full album to follow at the end of the year. But Adler says he also holds out a degree of hope for the original GN'R quintet to do something together again.
"I know the four of us besides Axl would love to do it," he said. "I know besides millions and millions and hundreds of millions of dollars that would be involved, I think if we played for the whole world, it would be such a relief...like, 'God, they're finally playing!' It's what so many people really want, y'know?"

HEAVEN & HELL Members Perform Tribute To RONNIE JAMES DIO At U.K.\'s HIGH VOLTAGE Festival
Surviving HEAVEN & HELL members Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice played a very special tribute to their fallen bandmate, Ronnie James Dio, earlier tonight (Saturday, July 24) at this year's High Voltage festival at Victoria Park in London, England. The musicians were joined by legendary former DEEP PURPLE and BLACK SABBATH man Glenn Hughes and Norwegian vocalist Jorn Lande, who sings for power metallers MASTERPLAN and has just released his own tribute to Ronnie.
According to Classic Rock magazine, Butler, Iommi and Appice "sen[t] shivers down the spine, as they deliver[ed] the ultimate tribute to the man who's not there.
"It has to be said that singers Jorn Lande and Glenn Hughes [did] a stunning job, not only reminding us all of the tragic loss — and there [were] some truly tearful moments — but also underlining the way Dio's legacy has united us all. And when [Ronnie's wife/manager] Wendy Dio [came] on to read out a message out the cancer charity Stand Up And Shout [see video below], there [were] tears in almost every eye.
"Mind you, HEAVEN & HELL also offer[ed] the day's most surreal moment, when Phil Anselmo [DOWN, PANTERA] dashe[d] on during the encore of 'Neon Knights' and snatche[d] the microphone from an aghast Hughes [see photo]."
The setlist was as follows (vocalist for each track listed in parenthesis):
01. The Mob Rules (Jorn Lande)
02. I (Jorn Lande)
03. Country Girl (Glenn Hughes)
04. Children Of The Sea (Glenn Hughes)
05. Turn Up The Night (Jorn Lande)
06. Voodoo (Jorn Lande)
07. Bible Black (Glenn Hughes)
08. Falling Off The Edge Of The World (Glenn Hughes)
09. Die Young (Jorn Lande)
10. Heaven And Hell (Jorn Lande, Glenn Hughes)
11. Neon Knights (Jorn Lande, Glenn Hughes, Philip Anselmo)
Check out photos:

* Photo#3
Fan-filmed video footage of Wendy Dio's speech can be viewed below.
Proceeds from this performance will go to the Ronnie James Dio "Stand Up And Shout" Cancer Fund.
In a recent interview, Iommi stated about today's concert, "This will be the first and only tribute we're doing to Ronnie. Not that that's wrong, but we feel that it would be really nice to do this for him. And he'd really like that, I know he would.
"Glenn Hughes has also been a part of the family for many years — he was a really good friend of Ronnie's; they were very close, and he was very close with us — so we think it would be apt to use Glenn. And Glenn's a great vocalist. And Jorn Lande, of course — I don't know if you're familiar with him, but he's also a very big fan of Ronnie's and a great singer.
"We want the best singers that [are] gonna sing and produce as close as what Ronnie would. We wanna do it for the fans, because it was sort of a sudden exit, really, because we were supposed to have been doing a tour.
"I was talking to Ronnie [a few] weeks ago, and he said, 'I've gotta have this new chemo, but I think it's working.' And that was the real big shock of it, because within a week of that, he had passed away. So it was a big shock for all of us, because we built ourselves up to do it and, of course, we didn't expect to lose...
"Ronnie was always a person you thought would always be there — very strong, great within the band; we had a great relationship. [He was] a fantastic person, [and he] loved his fans. And that's why we wanna do this show, because we owe it to the fans to do this show.
"We're not cashing in — it's all for charity. It all goes to charity. We just wanna do it for him and the fans. I know Ronnie would be behind us in whatever we do — he's that sort of person. And he would love for his music to be played. That's what he lived for — he lived for his fans and his music and his friends. It's a closure for us as well. Unfortunately, it's a shame it's not with him, but... that's it."

MARTY FRIEDMAN: \'Bad D.N.A.\' Video Available
"Bad D.N.A.", the new video from former MEGADETH guitarist Marty Friedman, can be viewed below. The clip was directed by Visual Trap, which has helmed all of the videos for DIR EN GREY. The song is the title track of Friedman's tenth solo album, which will be released in Japan on August 25 via Avex. The CD was produced by Marty and engineered by Steve Hardy and Shinnosuke Miyazawa (LADY GAGA, GUNS N' ROSES) this April/May at The Village in Los Angeles, California.
According to a posting on Friedman's web site, "Bad D.N.A." is "a natural progression, picking up where 'Loudspeaker' and 'Tokyo Jukebox' left off and adding its own twists and turns."
The first Japanese pressing will include the "Bad D.N.A." video.

The glorious "Live Death Doom" old-school artwork was created by Axel Hermann, who was also responsible for the artwork on the group's classic 1990s releases. The DVD was coordinated and edited by Oliver "Bomber" Barth.
Commented the band: "So, finally, after over 23 years, here's the first ASPHYX live album. And our dedicated fans worldwide who've experienced us live know what that means: Heavy old-school death doom metal played the way it was meant to be…and still should be today! Headbanging, grinning, drooling, spitting, sweating, passion, loud volume, stagediving, beer, honesty and brutality. No makeup or fancy queercostumes, no superfluous attributes, no technical rubbish, no compromises. This is how we are, this is how we want you to have us!
"We are very proud of this release. Very damn fuckin' proud, as this is exactly us! We would never have brought it out if we weren't 100% behind it…but it would never have been possible without our incredible loyal fans, of which we are even more proud!
"We'll see you all somewhere, sometime again at one of our shows on this planet and then raise our beers and horns together."
ASPHYX recently entered Sonic Assault studio to record two new songs. One of the cuts, "We Doom You To Death", will appear on the upcoming split seven-inch single with Finnish doom/deathsters HOODED MENACE.
ASPHYX parted ways with bassist Wannes Gubbels earlier in the year and replaced him with Alwin Zuur (PULVERIZER, ESCUTCHEON).
ASPHYX's new lineup made its live debut at this year's edition of the Hammer Of Doom festival on February 6, 2010 at Posthalle in Würzburg, Germany.
ASPHYX 2010 is:
Martin van Drunen (vocals)
Alwin Zuur (bass)
Paul Baayens (guitar)
Bob Bagchus (drums) | 0 | |

THE MAN-EATING TREE: New Clip Released
THE MAN-EATING TREE — the new atmospheric metal band featuring former SENTENCED drummer Vesa Ranta alongside current/former members of POISONBLACK, REFLEXION and EMBRAZE — will release its debut album, "Vine", in Finland on September 22 via Cobra Records and in other territories through Century Media Records. The CD was recorded at Mastervox Studio in Oulu, Finland with producer Hiili Hiilesmaa (HIM, SENTENCED, AMORPHIS).
"Vine" track listing:
01. Lathing A New Man
02. The White Plateau
03. This Longitude Of Sleep
04. King Of July
05. Of Birth For Passing
06. Out Of The Wind
07. Nights In White Satin
08. Tide Shift
09. Instead Of Sand And Stone
10. Amended
The song "This Longtitude Of Sleep" can be streamed in the YouTube clip below.
"Out Of The Wind", the first single from THE MAN-EATING TREE, recently entered the official chart in the group's home country at position No. 3.
According to the group's official bio, THE MAN-EATING TREE was formed when "Vesa Ranta, having taken a break from music after SENTENCED, began to overcome his post-SENTENCED battle fatigue and lack of musical motivation. The idea of a new band — or bands — was eventually brainstormed over a period of time between Vesa and his friends, including gentlemen Miika Tenkula, Aaron Rantonen, Janne Markus and Mikko Uusimaa. Plans were made reality in 2009; the outfit was completed by the addition of Tuomas Tuominen as a vocalist and Heidi Määttä as a keyboard player. First demo recordings were made in the spring and summer of 2009.
"The bulk of compositions are the origin of Janne Markus, with some contribution also from Aaron Rantonen. Much of the lyrical input is contributed by Tuomas Tuominen. These are the building blocks of the music, which is finally arranged hands-on at the band house by the entire group."
THE MAN-EATING TREE is:
Tuomas Tuominen (ex-FALL OF THE LEAFE) - Vocals
Janne Markus (POISONBLACK) - Guitar
Mikko Uusimaa (REFLEXION) - Bass
Heidi Määttä (ex-EMBRAZE) - Keyboards
Vesa Ranta (ex-SENTENCED) - Drums

I was alone in a 'strange city' in a 'strange land,' taking a tourist bus tour of the city, when the text messages breaking the news started coming through. I had to abandon the bus tour and stuck on the headphones and listened to 'Follow The Tears' and 'To Live For The King'.
"With [Argentinean rock band] RATA BLANCA in that 'strange land,' we played 'Catch The Rainbow' every night of the tour [see video below].
"Even though spoken language was a barrier most of the time, three words united everyone in the halls we played, every night. We sang together, we shed tears together and we remembered. We remembered the music the words and the man.
"The three words were... Ronnie James Dio.
"I am very happy and humbled to asked to sing a few songs that were a huge part of my musical education. I will try and do them justice. Maybe there will be more tears... Who can say?? But in the end, let's remember what Ronnie sings at the end of the Kerry Livgren song 'To Live For The King': 'Rejoice!! Rejoice!! Rejoice!! Is there any choice?'"

That's right, two for one! It was a total off-the-cuff show that was announced last minute (even to us!) and gave us an opportunity to kick it old-school (as in club gig) and play some tunes we don't normally play in our regular set, i.e. 'Mechanix', 'Rattlehead' and the likes. So, be on the lookout for more of these random late night shows in our future travels in your town... oops, that's right, it's a secret!"

Reunited THE CROWN: New Song Available For Streaming
"Blood O.D.", a brand new song from the reunited Swedish death/thrash metal act THE CROWN, is available for streaming on the band's MySpace page. The track comes off the group's new album, "Doomsday King", which is scheduled for release on September 27 via Century Media Records.
THE CROWN 2010 is:
* Jonas Stålhammar (GOD MACABRE, MACABRE END, ABHOTH) - Vocals
* Marko Tervonen - Rhythm Guitar
* Marcus Sunesson - Lead Guitar
* Magnus Olsfelt - Bass
* Janne Saarenpää - Drums
THE CROWN split up more than six years ago due to "too many tours gone bad due to not at all professional tour arrangements," according to a March 2004 statement released by Saarenpää. He added, "Coming home from tours with empty pockets, equipment falling apart and having a pile of bills on the doorstep is simply 'horns down'. Paying the bills with tour memories and floorscores is just not possible. We do love standing on stage but we don't know much about the business part, and that's a bad combination."
THE CROWN's last CD, "Possessed 13", was released in October 2003 through Metal Blade. The self-produced effort, which was recorded at Gothenurg's Studio Fredman during May-June 2003, was made available in a special limited-edition double-CD digipack, featuring a bonus CD that contained the band's 1993 "Forever Heaven Gone" and 1994 "Forget The Light" demos, a cover of BATHORY's "Burnin' Leather", and a demo version of "Rebel Angel" (off 2000's "Deathrace King" CD).
In a December 2009 interview with Metal Sucks, guitarist Marko Tervonen was asked if former THE CROWN vocalist Johan Lindstrand was approached take part in the band's reformation and whether Johan supports the group's new lineup. "He supports the new lineup," marko said. "Actually, when I talked to him about DOBERMANN [the band that evolved into the reunited THE CROWN], he asked me why we don't use the name THE CROWN, so he's cool with it. Johan was asked to join us for the DOBERMANN ride, but he was too busy with his ONE MAN ARMY band. So we started looking for other options. And when we discovered that Jonas was the man, we at that time decided to use the name THE CROWN. We kind of discovered how much like THE CROWN everything sounded, so in the end it would have been plain silly to call it something else."
When asked if there were any issues with re-announcing the DOBERMANN project as THE CROWN, Marko said, "We hesitated a lot. First we wanted to have a completely different name. But when the album started to take form, everything just sounded so CROWN. First we thought, 'Well, maybe we should call us something CROWN-related after a song or album,' until someone said 'Fuck it, let's do this as THE CROWN.' When we decided to go that way, it all just felt great. And scary too, to be honest… We're all determined to do this our way this time. No bullshit, just good death metal albums and shows."

Box set includes:

* "Cowboys From Hell" 20th-anniversary expanded CD

PANTERA found its growl and groove on "Cowboys From Hell", a landmark album whose bone-powdering intensity, razor-sharp riffing and pummeling rhythmic assault represented a turning point in modern metal when it was released in 1990. More than just PANTERA's major label debut, many consider this album to be the official debut of the PANTERA lineup with singer Philip Anselmo, guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul and bassist Rex Brown.
To celebrate the 20-year anniversary of "Cowboys From Hell", Rhino rounds up a three-disc "Ultimate Edition," a three-disc "Deluxe Edition," and a two-disc "Expanded Edition." All three editions include a newly remastered version of the original album along with unreleased and rare live performances from the "Cowboys From Hell" tour. The "Ultimate" and "Deluxe" editions will also feature a disc of unreleased demos for nearly every album track, plus, "The Will To Survive", a previously unreleased song recorded during the album's sessions.
"'The Will To Survive' is a great track. With so many killer songs, it was hard to pick and choose the ones that should make our major label debut," says Vinnie Paul. "After hearing it for the first time in about 20 years, it's a pretty stellar performance and I am definitely proud that it will see the light of day for all the die-hard PANTERA fans around the world! It shows the true musical diversity of the band at that time!"
The "Deluxe" and "Expanded" editions of "Cowboys From Hell" will be released September 14 at all retail outlets, including www.pantera.com
and www.rhino.com . The "Deluxe Edition" will be available for a suggested list price of $29.98 (physical) and $17.99 (digital) and the "Expanded Edition" for $19.98 (physical) and $12.99 (digital).
The "Ultimate Edition" will feature all three discs included in the "Deluxe Edition" and will be housed in an intricate box including several replica memorabilia pieces from the "Cowboys" era. The "Ultimate Edition" will be available on November 23 and final pre-order details, as well as the contents, will be unveiled soon on PANTERA's Facebook page.
Along with the remastered version of "Cowboys From Hell", all three sets include a disc of live music recorded during the tour for the album. It begins with seven unreleased performances from PANTERA's September 15, 1990 appearance at the Foundations Forum metal convention in California, a show recorded for radio broadcast but never released commercially. The remainder of the disc contains the five-song EP "Alive And Hostile", a collection of performances recorded in 1991 at the Monsters of Rock festival in Moscow that was previously available only in Australia as part of a 1994 boxed set.
The "Ultimate" and "Deluxe" editions of "Cowboys From Hell" include a third disc that contains the previously unreleased "The Will To Survive", along with demos for 10 of the album's 12 songs, including early versions of the title track "Psycho Holiday", "The Art Of Shredding" and "Cemetery Gates".
After being turned down "twenty-eight times by every major label on the face of the earth," ATCO Records A&R rep Mark Ross saw the band when Hurricane Hugo stranded him in Texas. The rest, as they say, is history, including another seven years and over a million miles of touring for "Cowboys" to be certified platinum (one million album sales) by the RIAA.
The album's liner notes include essays by each of the band's surviving members, producer Terry Date, and the aforementioned Ross. Recalling the first time he saw PANTERA, Ross writes, "By the end of the first song, my jaw was on the floor. The sonic power of it all — the attitude and the musicianship — blew me away. Basically, you had to be an idiot to not think they're amazing. I mean, how could you see these guys and not think, Holy shit!?"
