EUROPE’s JOEY TEMPEST - “We Just Couldn’t Stay Apart Any Longer”

Love It Loud recently conducted an interview with EUROPE’s Joey Tempest about the band's forthcoming concert appearances at the iTunes Festival in London, Sonisphere at Knebworth and more. Excerpts from the chat are below:

Love It Loud: Having originally split in the early 1990s after five successful albums what prompted you to reform once again and how challenging was it to define the sound of Europe for the 21st century with Start From The Dark?

Joey Tempest: “We just couldn’t stay apart any longer. We’d all been on different journeys for a while but it was inevitable. Start From The Dark was just a new beginning. We had a meeting in 2003 where we said – 'If we’re doing this, we will do it long term.' We built up a new trust with the fans and media and strived to get better at our job. It’s amazing to think where we’re at today. It feels like we’re beginning to achieve what we set out to do.”

Love It Loud: Do you still regularly perform much of your earlier material in your live sets and would you rather focus solely on your modern work?

Joey Tempest: “We like to find the balance that works for us. We still feel exited about playing live and we never get bored. Usually we play between four to five new songs. Our set list has a core format where certain songs will always be played. On top of that we alternate a few songs more regularly. We have our favourite songs that all five of us agree to play and we don’t really divert much from that.”

Love It Loud: Having formed in Sweden how do you feel the culture and music of the country influenced Europe and set it apart from the other rock groups during the 1980s?

Joey Tempest: “In the northern suburbs of Stockholm where we grew up there was a lot of British hard rock being played. We all had one thing in common. We wanted to express ourselves that way. The Swedish music scene did not inspire us at all. We got turned down by labels because our international approach. We had loud guitars, long hair and we sang in English, and that must have irritated the music establishment in Sweden at the time. Of course there were some decent Swedish bands and musicians around but they we’re not our source of inspiration.”

A special Internet-only video for the song "Powershifter" from Los Angeles cyber metallers FEAR FACTORY can be viewed below (courtesy of AOL's Noisecreep). Filmed in England earlier this year, the clip was created by noted English videographer Myles Dyer with assistance from producer Tom Bacon and cameraman David Bass. Presented in high definition, it captures the band on stage in front of an enthusiastic audience.

GRAVE DIGGER: New Album Details Revealed

German power metallers GRAVE DIGGER have set "The Clans Will Rise Again" as the title of their new album, due in Europe on October 1 via Napalm Records. The CD was recorded between mid-May and mid-July at the Meadow Studios, which is owned by GRAVE DIGGER's new guitarist Axel Ritt, and Principal Studios, where all of GRAVE DIGGER albums since 1995's "Heart Of Darkness" have been tracked. It was produced by Chris Boltendahl and mixed by Jörg Umbreit.

According to a press release, "Chris Boltendahl, Jens Becker, Stefan Arnold, HP Katzenburg and Axel Ritt offer an explosive mixture of the typical GRAVE DIGGER riff metal, combined with awesome epic chorus hooks, which will fascinate the fans from the very first note.

"'The Clans Will Rise Again' is a loose sequel of the 'Tunes Of War' album, but this time not a concept album about the Scottish history, rather a work about Scotland, its mysticism and its people."

GRAVE DIGGER will celebrate its 30th anniversary at this year's edition of the Wacken Open Air festival, set to take place August 5-7, 2010 in Wacken, Germany. The band will perform its seventh and most successful album, "Tunes Of War" (1996), in its entirety at the event and will be accompanied by "illustrious guests," such as the 20-headed BAUL MULUY PIPES & DRUMS BAND from Hamburg, German metal queen Doro Pesch, BLIND GUARDIAN lead singer Hansi Kürsch and the metal a capella ensemble VAN CANTO. There will also be a special elaborate stage set with an extraordinary pyro show.

Wacken Open Air will mark the first and final time GRAVE DIGGER will play the entire "Tunes Of War" album live. The band will also perform some of its other "greatest hits," such as "Ballad Of A Hangman", "Heavy Metal Breakdown" and "Excalibur" at the end of its set.

GRAVE DIGGER's latest album, "Ballads Of A Hangman", was released on January 9, 2009 via Austria's Napalm Records.

SEPTICFLESH: New Album Update

Greek extreme metallers SEPTICFLESH are hard at work on material for their new album, tentatively due in early 2011. The recording process is scheduled to begin in August at the band's own newly built Devasoundz studios in Athens. Once again the orchestral parts will be recorded in Prague under the guidance of Chris Antoniou (CHAOSTAR). This time, the band's effort "is bound to expand its dark and dreamy soundscapes and will be enhanced" by the mixing job of producer PAIN/HYPOCRISY mainman Peter Tägtgren (AMON AMARTH, MARDUK, THERION, CHILDREN OF BODOM, CELTIC FROST, IMMORTAL).

Commented SEPTICFLESH: "The creation of the 10 songs that will appear on the next album is approaching the final stage. The musical result can be described as a great mass of emotional death. One of the dominant elements of the album is the use of the characteristic guitar melodies of the band in a more intense and dramatic way. In combination with the orchestral parts that will surpass everything else that the band has done in the past, the sound resembles to a funeral concerto. Actually, it appears that the whole atmosphere of the album is one step closer to the depths of Hades… Also, as actually SEPTICFLESH is in the wider sense an artistic dark experiment, the nightmarish visual world of Seth Siro Anton that is part of this experiment is going to be expanded towards extremity in order to 'dress' fittingly the soundscapes and the new mysterious lyrical thematology."

Necroterror Records, the Cyprus-based underground record label and distributor which specializes in high-quality black metal releases mainly in the vinyl format, released the 12" LP/box version of SEPTICFLESH's latest album, "Communion". Limited to 350 copies, this vinyl release features all-new alternative cover artwork and layout to the CD version, created by Seth Siro Anton. SLAYER Guitarist KERRY KING Featured In New WITCHERY Video

"Witchkrieg", the new video from Swedish metallers WITCHERY, can be viewed below. The clip, which was shot in early May in Stockholm, Sweden, was filmed, directed and produced by Daniel Larrson and AT THE GATES/THE HAUNTED guitarist Anders Björler (At The Gates Productions). Additional scenes featuring Kerry King of SLAYER were filmed in early June in London, England.

Commented WITCHERY guitarist Jensen: "Thank God I'm not a huge fan of METALLICA. I am a huge fan of SLAYER, though, and Kerry agreed to do a guest solo for the new WITCHERY album AND to appear in the video. James [Hetfield] would never have done anything like that."

AVENGED SEVENFOLD: Official \'Buried Alive\' Lyric Video Available

The official "lyric video" for "Buried Alive", a brand new song from Orange County, California's AVENGED SEVENFOLD, can be viewed below. The track comes off the band's new fifth studio album, "Nightmare", which is due from Warner Bros. Records on July 27.

Hopeless Records will release a very special and limited vinyl pressing of "Nightmare" in late September. The deluxe edition includes two 12-inch discs pressed on blood-red 180-gram vinyl in a double gatefold. The 2,500 limited edition package also comes numbered. A standard version is also available, on two 12-inch discs pressed on standard-weight vinyl in a double-gatefold packaging.

DEMIURG: New Audio Sample Posted Online

DEMIURG — the Sweden-based band featuring Rogga Johansson (RIBSPREADER, PAGANIZER) on vocals and guitars, Johan Berglund (THIS HAVEN) on bass, Ed Warby (GOREFEST, AYREON, HAIL OF BULLETS) on drums and Dan Swanö (EDGE OF SANITY, NIGHTINGALE, BLOODBATH) on lead guitar and keyboards — will release its third album, "Slakthus Gamleby", on July 30 via Cyclone Empire Records.

Regarding the musical direction of the new CD, Warby tells BLABBERMOUTH.NET, "Marjan Welman from AUTUMN guests on a couple of tracks and the musical style has broadened quite a bit from the last record [2008's 'The Hate Chamber']; the heavy stuff is even heavier and the atmosphere is still black as pitch but we've also incorporated some more melodic and even prog elements." He adds, "We all feel it's the best DEMIURG album yet..."

STONE SOUR: Official Lyric Video For \'Say You\'ll Haunt Me\' Released

The official "lyric video" for "Say You'll Haunt Me", the new single from STONE SOUR, can be viewed below. The track comes off the band's third album, "Audio Secrecy", which is scheduled for release on September 7 via Roadrunner Records.

STONE SOUR frontman Corey Taylor told The Pulse of Radio that it took him a while to warm up to "Say You'll Haunt Me" during the making of the record. "It was one of those songs that I didn't really feel until it was finished," he said. "I enjoyed the lyrics but I wasn't sure about the music. I'd come in and I'd sang it, and I put my heart into it because the lyrics are about my wife and how I feel about my wife, and then I left. And I came back and they (the band) had just made it incredible. Now I can't get it out of my head."

STONE SOUR has tapped director Paul R. Brown (SLIPKNOT, MÖTLEY CRÜE, KORN, GODSMACK, AVENGED SEVENFOLD) to helm the video for "Say You'll Haunt Me".

STONE SOUR (Taylor, guitarists James Root and Josh Rand, bassist Shawn Economaki and drummer Roy Mayorga) and producer Nick Raskulinecz (FOO FIGHTERS, ALICE IN CHAINS, DEFTONES) recorded the follow-up to 2006's "Come What(ever) May" at Blackbird Studios in Nashville during the destructive storms and devastating floods that hit the historic heart of Music City.

"Come What(ever) May" debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard album chart and included the hits "Through Glass", "Sillyworld" and "Made Of Scars".

The quintet will be previewing select songs from the album during this summer's Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival. The 36-date tour launches August 17 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and will visit arenas and amphitheatres across North America before wrapping October 4 in Madison, Wisconsin.

"My Dark Place Alone", the new video from the reactivated MURDERDOLLS — the band consisting of Joey Jordison (SLIPKNOT, ROB ZOMBIE) and Wednesday 13 — can be viewed below. "Sorrowspell", the new video from the California-based deathcore band CARNIFEX, can be viewed below. The song comes off the group's new album, "Hell Chose Me", which sold around 3,100 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at No. 4 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

AUGUST BURNS RED To Release \'Home\' DVD/CD In September

Lancaster, Pennsylvania-based Christian metalcore quintet AUGUST BURNS RED filmed its June 4 concert at Warehouse 54 in Manheim, Pennsylvania for a forthcoming CD/DVD, "Home", to be released on September 28 through longtime label home Solid State Records. The DVD/CD shoot drew a sold-out crowd of 1,250 people who wanted to participate in the exciting performance, including some who traveled internationally, from as close as Montreal to as far as away as Amsterdam. Shot and edited by Space Monkey Studios, whose phenomenal work has been seen on releases by acts like COHEED AND CAMBRIA, LAMB OF GOD, EVERY TIME I DIE and more, the live show is accompanied by a documentary on the band detailing life on the road and at home and featuring many fans discussing the ways in which AUGUST BURNS RED have impacted their lives in a positive, meaningful way.

"We played our first ever show as a band in Manheim in April of 2003," explains guitarist JB Brubaker. "Between then and now, we've been fortunate enough to play all over the world. But when it came time for us to record our first live DVD/CD, it only made sense to do so back in Manheim where everything began. It was exciting for us to have people come from far and wide to the town where most of us grew up, and to be able to play such a special show in front of our families and close friends who have been supporting us since the beginning."

The powerful, pummeling performance featured many fan favorites from the band's three full-length albums — 2009's "Constellations", 2007's "Messengers" and 2005's "Thrillseeker" — which means that "Home" will appeal to both new and longtime AUGUST BURNS RED fans.

"Constellations", the third full-length album from AUGUST BURNS RED, debuted at an impressive No. 24 on The Billboard 200. Released on July 14, 2009, the LP also landed at No. 8 on Current Rock Albums, No. 2 on Top Hard Music Albums (less than 300 units behind NICKLEBACK!) and No. 2 on the Christian Market chart.

With sales of 20,000 copies in its first week, "Constellations" more than doubled the first-week numbers of its predecessor, 2007's "Messengers", which debuted in The Billboard 200 at No. 81 and went on to sell well over 80,000 copies. "Constellations" also hit the No. 1 New Music Release spot iTunes the day it was released, and entered the Top 100 at No. 6, nestled between a MICHAEL JACKSON best-of album and the movie soundtrack for a certain wizard named Harry.

HELLOWEEN To Tour Europe With STRATOVARIUS

After their extremely successful "Hellish Rock" world tour 2007/08, which took HELLOWEEN through 40 countries on four continents, the German power metallers will hit the road again in November/December. Three weeks after the release of HELLOWEEN's as-yet-untitled new studio album, the band will team up with Finnish melodic metallers STRATOVARIUS for a European tour, dubbed "The 7 Sinners World Tour 2010/11 - European Part I".

HELLOWEEN's new album was recorded at Andi Deris' Mi Sueno Studios in Tenerife, Spain. The band wrote more than 20 songs and selected the best ideas with longtime producer Charlie Bauerfeind.

HELLOWEEN bass player Markus Grosskopf previously stated about the band's new material: "For all those out there who found our special best-of [CD] 'Unarmed' to be too smooth and calm, I have a great news: The new album will hit you right in the face! It's gonna be very heavy and contain all HELLOWEEN trademarks! Some songs are very powerful and hymnic, others contain the fastest bass-drum patterns our drummer Dani [Löble] ever played, and this means a lot!"

HELLOWEEN's 25th-anniversary album, "Unarmed - Best Of 25th Anniversary", was released in North America on March 30 via The End Records, under exclusive license from Sony Music Entertainment Germany.

"Unarmed - Best Of 25th Anniversary" was made available in Europe on January 29. The artwork was once again created by Martin Haeusler, who had previously worked with HELLOWEEN on the "The Legacy" and the "Gambling With The Devil" releases.

"Unarmed" was released in a limited-edition version with a very special digipack, including a 30-minute making-of DVD, containing interviews and studio footage. It was also made available as a double vinyl.

STYX Re-Record Six Songs For New Album, Brand New Song Available For Free Download

According to STYX's management the band was putting the finishing touches on their new album, Regeneration: Volume 1, back in June. Produced by Styx and their long-time studio/live sound engineer Gary Loizzo, Regeneration: Volume 1 contains six re-recorded versions of some of the band's classics and one brand new song, 'Difference In the World'. The six classic tracks are 'Grand Illusion', 'Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)', 'Lorelei', 'Sing For The Day', 'Crystal Ball' and 'Come Sail Away'.

Styx plan to release the album on vinyl as well as on CD and digitally.

JIMMY PAGE\'s Former Home On Sale For $12 Million

According to The Argus, Jimmy Page's former home is up for sale for £8 million (approximately $12 million).

Plumpton Place — an Elizabethan manor house in Plumpton, East Sussex, England — comes with six bedrooms, five en-suite bathrooms, a tennis court and its own moat and was once the home of the LED ZEPPELIN guitarist.

The Grade II-listed building comes with three lakes, two cottages and a three bedroom mill house with its own working water wheel.

Set over three floors the house has a sitting room 48 feet long and a library that is 550 square feet.

The luxury pile will offer any potential buyer with the right bank balance a haven in the South Downs six miles from Lewes and set in its own 62 acres of land.

ARCH ENEMY Guitarist Christopher Amott Releases New Solo Album

ARCH ENEMY guitarist Christopher Amott has released his latest solo effort, Follow Your Heart, in Japan on CD and as a download in the rest of the world.

According to a press release, in 2008, Amott began to consider his creative options as a mature musician. He began writing songs of an entirely different atmosphere, which saw his guitar playing focused less on technical ecstasy and more on a chord-based blues rock ambience as a foundation for more prominent vocal and lyrical ideas. These compositions developed into his next solo project; the album would be called Follow Your Heart, released under his own name in 2010.

Amott adds: "This record may be something different than what you are used to hearing from me. Check it out and see what you think. I hope you enjoy it!"

ALL SHALL PERISH Guitarist Releases Instrumental Solo Album

ALL SHALL PERISH's new guitarist and Berklee College of Music graduate Francesco Artusato has completed work on his dynamic new, all-instrumental solo endeavor entitled "Chaos and The Primordial". This all-out technical shred fest features 10 truly diverse tracks that takes the listener on an all-encompassing musical journey and the depth and diversity in which Artusato does so is astonishing.

Commented Artusato: "I just got back from my first tour with ALL SHALL PERISH playing four great shows as direct support for the legendary DANZIG. It was such an amazing and mind-blowing experience!

"We will be back on the road starting this weekend for the Summer Slaughter North American tour and will then head out to Europe after that. It's going to be great.

"This is also an exciting moment for me because my first solo record, 'Chaos and the Primordial', is finally finished. It's 10 tracks of all instrumental music that explore the rock/metal language in singular ways.

"I'm very proud of the final product. It sounds the way I envisioned it, thanks to Ben Cohen, who mixed and mastered it at Sky Blue Studios.

"It took a lot of patience and attention due to the crazy amount of recorded guitar tracks (doubles, harmonies and different layers and textures). Some of the songs have more 25 guitar tracks each!

"This disc is the result of the experiences, studies, thoughts and musical moments that shaped my sound and vision throughout these years.

"The first sample is taken from the first track titled 'Chaos and the Primordial'. Overall, it's a very technical and intense song that has a progressive vibe with some very open and lyrical parts mixed with very powerful moments of intensity and complexity. The second sample is taken from the third track titled 'Typhoeus' and this song combines some of the most challenging riffs and phrases that I've ever written. The intricacy of the parts and its wild and forceful nature are what make this song comparable to a typhoon: uncontainable and feral! The third sample is taken from the sixth track titled 'The Metamorphosis', which is probably the most experimental and unconventional sounding song of the album. The song is distinguished by crazy time signatures, peculiar-sounding lines and phrases and a constant mutating form that makes the song evolve and devolve within itself."

ONE MAN ARMY AND THE UNDEAD QUARTET: New Album Title Revealed

ONE MAN ARMY AND THE UNDEAD QUARTET, the Swedish band featuring former THE CROWN vocalist Johan Lindstrand, is currently writing material for its fourth album, tentatively due in early 2011. Lindstrand states, "We will enter Black Lounge studio in October and together with Jonas Kjellgren we will try to create the best possible ARMY album ever. If we succeed or not is up to you to judge, but all I can say is that for the first time all songs feels like keepers.

"We have chosen nine songs out of 13 and now the pre-recordings are done. There are just some solos and lyrics left to be done but they will be in place in a couple of weeks.

"My voice seems stronger than in years. Like I've gone back ten years to record a CROWN album or something, and the rest of the gang is truly doing tremendous things.

"Jonas [Blom; guitar] has written most of the songs and we have all had the chance to put some input in them, which feels great.

"We've had so much time with the songs and to have had this long period since 'Grim Tales' to just reload the batteries has been a true blessing.

"The ones who know about us knows that we were famous for working ultra-fast and releasing album after album, year after year, but I got to tell ya, this time we needed the extra time to come up with something extra special so it's with great pleasure I announce 'The Dark Epic'... as the title of our forthcoming album.

"Some titles on the album are: 'Sandman Apocalypse', 'Stitch', 'The Pleasures Of Slavery', 'How I Love To Kill You', 'The Zombie Syndrome (Of Acid And Man)'.

"The cover art is being processed at this right moment by Björn of Killustrations so when we have it you will see it.

"Björn is a great guy and a real talent and we've talked for some time now to do the whole thing together. He has done some really cool shirt designs for us so we expect nothing but a masterpiece from him.

"Those who expect General Grim to be on this one too will be very disappointed."

One Man Army and the Undead Quartet

ANTAGONIST: New Song Available For Streaming

"Sasha Grey", a brand new song from Southern California's ANTAGONIST, can be streamed on the band's MySpace page. The track comes off the group's new full-length album, "World In Decline", which will be released on August 17 via Prosthetic Records. The CD was recorded at Buzzbomb Studios in Orange, California with producer Paul Miner (TERROR, THRICE, THROWDOWN) and it features guest vocal appearances by ARSONISTS GET ALL THE GIRLS' Jared Monette and John Strachan of THE FUNERAL PYRE. The cover artwork was created by Daniel McBride, who has previously worked with VEIL OF MAYA and BORN OF OSIRIS.
