KATATONIA: Second Part of Studio Diary

KATATONIA's Jonas Renkse has issued the following update:

"The last cymbal hit of the drum session still ringing in my ear... I have a very good feeling about the whole thing. The playing first and foremost, and the sound is beautiful, the acoustics are ace! Plus we won't have to listen to nothing but drums 10 hours a day anymore. Daniel should be proud. We haven't had the time to do anything else as we're on a pretty tight schedule with this album. We saw some horses the other day and we celebrated David's birthday with cake, beer and various medications and oh, our new collaborator Frank Default (more known as the creative force behind the previous single's remixes and 'Unfurl' production) came down to help edit some of the drums and made sure we didn't fall behind schedule. So the time has come to wrap up and get outta here. Feels good to have a few days at home in Stockholm and celebrate midsummer. Next week we'll move on to rhythm, lead and clean guitars. The foundation of darkness is now rock solid."

SEPULTURA Frontman Welcomes Son

Congratulations are in order for SEPULTURA frontman Derrick Green on the birth of his son, Nolan Maddox.

SEPULTURA has just completed a massive tour of Brazil with fellow Brazilian metallers ANGRA. The trek, which kicked off on May 5 in Porto Alegre, included the São Paulo stop where the two bands joined forces on stage to play several covers, including a version of LED ZEPPELIN's "Immigrant Song".

"A-Lex" — SEPULTURA's first LP to be recorded without either of the founding Cavalera brothers (Max and Igor; on guitar/vocals and drums, respectively) — is available in three versions: in a deluxe digipak with an embossed cover, in a regular jewel case and on a vinyl gatefold LP.

On "A-Lex", SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser and his three colleagues, Derrick Green (vocals), Paulo Jr. (bass) and new addition Jean Dollabella (drums), have dedicated themselves to Anthony Burgess's book "A Clockwork Orange", creating an awesome thrash metal opus around this timeless and exciting subject.

GOREFEST Calls It Quits... Again

Dutch metallers GOREFEST have released the following statement:

"GOREFEST discover Internet porn, quit. OK, that's not entirely true, we knew about the porn all along. But, after two albums, both of which we're hugely proud of, and about a hundred shows, all of them memorable in their own way, the question that remained for us was: what's next? The answer can be short: nothing. 'La Muerte' and 'Rise To Ruin' are two albums with which we've expanded, and indeed completed our body of work to our full satisfaction. Barring one or two exceptions, all the shows we've done since we decided to reform sometime in 2004 have been tremendously enjoyable. So why quit? Pretty simple, really: Every ride comes to an end. This is ours."

GOREFEST's latest album, "Rise to Ruin", entered the Dutch chart at position No. 61 back in August 2007. Released in the U.S. on September 25, 2007 via Candlelight, the CD was mixed by Danish producer Tue Madsen at his Antfarm studios in Århus, Denmark.

GOREFEST issued several CDs through the Nuclear Blast label in the early 1990s before switching to SPV for their 1998 album, "Chapter 13".

ACE FREHLEY Completes Work On \'Anomaly\'; Final Track Listing Revealed

Original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley has completed work on his new solo album, "Anomaly". The CD was produced and recorded in Westchester County, New York between 2007 and 2009 and was mixed in Los Angeles by Marti Frederiksen, who has previously worked with AEROSMITH and DEF LEPPARD, among many others.

Commented Frehley: "Mixed, mastered... done!!!!! It clocks in as one full hour of new music... I'm waiting for my distribution company to get me solid release dates that we can decide on. I want 'Anomaly' to be available to you in every store around the world that sells CDs these days (and that number is shrinking). Digitally, 'Anomaly' will be available on iTunes (with an exclusive bonus album-only track!!)."

"Anomaly" official track listing:

01. Foxy & Free
02. Outer Space
03. Pain In The Neck
04. Fox On The Run
05. Genghis Khan
06. Too Many Faces
07. Change The World
08. Space Bear
09. A Little Below The Angels
10. Sister
11. It's A Great Life
12. Fractured Quantum
13. The Return of Space Bear (Dedicated to Tom Snyder) (iTunes exclusive)

Check out the cover artwork here.

Video footage of Ace Frehley laying down a solo on one of his new tracks, "Pain In The Neck", in the recording studio can be viewed below. Ace says, "I've been tweaking the solo and this is pretty close to what you'll hear on the [upcoming Frehley solo] album."

In an early 2008 interview with Billboard, Frehley stated about the CD, "Basically, I'm trying to get back into the mindset I was in when I did my first solo record [1978's 'Ace Frehley']. That record seemed to have all the elements everybody liked — a real cool instrumental, a hit single, some real heavy rockers, a nice variety of different genres of music."

Among his favorite new tracks are "A Little Below The Angels", hard-rocking "Pain In The Neck" and an instrumental called "Fractured Quantum", which is a follow-up to his previous instrumentals "Fractured Mirror" and "Fractured Too". Another favorite is "groove song" titled "Genghis Khan", which he likens in tone to LED ZEPPELIN's "Kashmir".

Frehley last year spent time on the road fronting a band that featured second guitarist Derrek Hawkins, drummer Scot Coogan (ex-BRIDES OF DESTRUCTION) and bassist Anthony Esposito (ex-LYNCH MOB).

GODHEAD: \'The Decline\' Video Released

"The Decline", the new video from GODHEAD, can be viewed here. The clip was directed by Philip Hodges and features footage from the band's summer 2007 tour, including shots of GODHEAD's crew as well as members of AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE.

GODHEAD — Jason C. Miller (vocals, guitars), Michael Miller (guitars), Ullrich Hepperlin (bass, programming) and Ty Smith (drums) — released its sixth studio album, "At The Edge Of The World", on October 7, 2008 via Driven Music Group (distribution by Ryko/Warner Music Group), the label owned by ex-KORN guitarist Brian "Head" Welch and music execs Greg Shanaberger and Mark Nawara.

The CD — produced by bassist Ullrich Hepperlin — features 13 songs and five bonus remixes courtesy of Assemblage 23, Sebastian Komor (ICON OF COIL), Curse Mackey (PIGFACE, EVIL MOTHERS), Shok (MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT) and Fat and Acid (AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE).

"When I was writing 'Stay Back'," explained singer/guitarist Jason C. Miller, "I thought about all the times people push each other away in relationships, maybe from clashing ideals or just being afraid of something good. I assumed the role of the person who knows he's a spoiler, but has enough morality left to warn the other person."

He stated about the album's overall writing process, "We really reconnected with the influences that inspired us to write music, like THE CURE, BLACK SABBATH, BAUHAUS, PINK FLOYD, RADIOHEAD, DAVID BOWIE, DEPECHE MODE and even RUSH. It's something I always try to do, but don't always succeed. It's not the radio single that makes you a true fan of a band, it's those interesting tracks that you discover late at night sitting in your room. And I try to ignore modern music trends at all costs. Why become a clone of what's popular now only to be ignored tomorrow? Stick to your own sound and your audience will find you, and they will stay with you for the rest of your life."

In addition to fronting GODHEAD, Miller is an accomplished actor and voice-over artist, devout Buddhist, trains in Kung Fu and is a loyal supporter of The Sogan Foundation, a charity which raises funds for The Tibetan Institute for Science and Technology (TIST) in Golok, Tibet. He has provided voices for over 25 different anime shows, some of which have been recorded at the recording studio he owns, Central Command Studios.

IN VAIN\'s New Album Pushed Back To 2010

"Mantra", the sophomore album from Norwegian extreme metallers IN VAIN, has been delayed until early 2010. According to the band, "This has nothing to do with the quality of the music or disagreements, but due to the label restructuring their business. We cannot say anything more about the matter than this. This is also completely out of our hands. However, releasing it in 2010 will give the album much better promotion and advertising, so in the end it will turn out better."

"Mantra" tentative track listing:

01. Captivating Solitude
02. Mannefall
03. Ain't No Lovin'
04. On The Banks Of The Mississippi
05. Circle Of Agony
06. Wayakin (The Guardian Spirit Of The Nez Perce)
07. Dark Prophets, Black Hearts

IN VAIN released its full-length debut, "The Latter Rain", in 2007 via Indie Recordings. TRISTANIA news

On behalf of the band I would like to express our deepest gratitude to the ones who attended our shows in Jørpeland and Kristiansand last weekend. Thanks for making this weekend the special party it was.

These two shows are probably the most exclusive ones we..ve ever done - with one surprise being revealed after the other. I think it felt equally special for the people in the audience and the nine of us who were on stage on Friday and Saturday.

Of course, the biggest surprise of them all was the announcement of Kjetil..s role as a stand-in for Østen, who is awaiting his twins in a couple of months. All of us are very happy for Østen and Silje, and we wish them all the best with their family. Østen will surely be missed, though, when we now will do tours without him, as he..s been a part of the live edition of Tristania since 1999. He is a social cornerstone in our band. At the same time, I know now that we couldn't have found have found a better stand-in for Østen than Kjetil. He is a good friend of us from before, and his great ability as singer and stage personality he is the perfect choice to replace Østen, while he will be busy with changing diapers and sleepless nights.

These two shows were unique as both Østen and Kjetil were on stage. Østen opened the show, while Kjetil took over after a few songs. They also performed Shadowman and Sacrilege together, which were memorable moments. Even I felt shivers down my spine when they did Shadowman together.

We..ve read your nice reactions on our temporary vocalist, and I know that Kjetil finds it very motivating to see this overwhelming reception to the news and the video we posted after the show on Jørpeland was finished on last Friday.

Another big surprise for this weekend was that Gyri Losnegaard, who some of you already know from Octavia Sperati, was presented with her first gigs as Tristania live guitarist this weekend. Gyri is fantastic. Expect more news about her within a few weeks.

As I’ve posted about before, Kenneth has had problems with an old soccer injury in his knee during the last couple of years. He has already gone through one surgery, and we still don..t know whether he has to have another one. This has prevented Kenneth for doing live shows with us for a while. The positive thing, though, is that he recently started to rehearse together with the rest of us again - so far without much pain.
We..ve had a great live replacement for Kenneth in Mr. Tarald Lie, who has done shows with us since 2006. I first met in Tarald back in 1998, when we were on tour together with Tristania and Solefald. Tarald was then their session live drummer, and we’re really happy that he wanted to help us out. Tarald is a fantastic person; the big comedian of the band – and an amazing drummer.
A very nice thing for us in the band was that that Kenneth joined us on stage and played Angellore and Beyond the Veil with us. Kenneth’s unexpected was obviously a pleasant surprise for the local audience at Jørpeland, judged by their fantastic feedback.

In Kjetil’s hometown, Kristiansand, we got a couple of more local guests on stage. Jonathan Perez (Sirenia, ex-Trail of Tears) joined us on stage for Tender Trip on Earth. Jonathan did help us out as a live drummer on Wacken Open Air and the Norwegian tour in 2005. Kjell “Kjellhammer” Hagen (also from the band formerly known as Trail of Tears) was our session bass player from 2005 to 2007, and in Kristiansand he played bass on The Wretched. It’s been a while since last time we met Jonathan and Kjell and it was great fun to play with them again.
We’ve got some film material from the concerts and we will make a short film around it for the future.
Soon, we will also post online some high quality photos from the gig in Kristiansand.

The set list we played this weekend was:

World of Glass (Vocals: Østen – with Kjetil on backing vocals)
Mercyside (Vocals: Østen – with Kjetil on backing vocals)
Tender Trip on Earth (Vocals: Østen)
Circus (Vocals: Østen)
The Emerald Piper (Vocals: Østen – with Kjetil on backing vocals)
Shadowman (Vocals: Østen & Kjetil)
The Wretched (Vocals: Kjetil)
Angellore (Vocals: Kjetil)
Beyond the Veil (Vocals: Kjetil)
Lotus (Vocals: Kjetil)
Protection (Vocals: Kjetil)

IMPIOUS Begins Recording New Album

Swedish death/thrashers IMPIOUS have issued the following update:

"We've finally started to record our new album! Things are going really good right now. Usually we get all kinds of problems when we record — anything from broken soundboards to ghost attacks are regular to us. But this time everything's been great so far. But you never know.

"We've been working on our new songs for a pretty long time and now we are very happy with how they all sound. We can't wait for this album to be done.

"The drum tracks are all done and we've started working on the guitars. We are working on 12 songs, but every song might not end up on the album. We might save a song or two for b-sides or for other releases."

IMPIOUS's new CD is being recorded at guitarist Valle Adzic's Studio Deadline. The band previously stated, "This is the first album ever we'll produce and engineer by ourselves and we're pretty stoked about delivering this baby without any other people involved. This album will truly represent what the fuck IMPIOUS is all about!"

The group added, ""We would also like to tell you that we've hired the awesome and wickedly talented artist Marcello Vasco to create one of the most sinister and malignant-looking album covers ever! Marcello is extremely talented and we're absolutely positive that everyone will crap their pants when they see what Marcello has created for us!

"We have some good ideas to what we want to call the album. We surely want it to represent the dark and merciless vibe of our new songs and we also need the album cover to fit with it as well. We have some pretty wicked ideas, but we won't reveal any of it quite yet."

RATT Begins Recording New Album

After months of pre-production, reactivated Los Angeles rockers RATT have just entered the studio to start recording their first studio release in 10 years. The CD is being produced by Michael "Elvis" Baskette, whose credits include PUDDLE OF MUDD, CHEVELLE, SALIVA, LIMP BIZKIT, ALTER BRIDGE and THREE DAYS GRACE, to name a few.

RATT will spend the month or so recording the new album in Mathews, Virginia — the first time the band has steped outside of Los Angeles to track a new CD in 20-plus years. A late 2009 release via Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records is expected.

RATT and EXTREME have teamed up to bring you this summer's most rockin' tour lineup. The tour, which will feature sets from both bands with RATT closing, kicks off on July 12 in Amarillo, Texas and runs through August 7 in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. It will cross the U.S. and cover 16 markets, with more to be announced soon. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of their landmark debut "Out Of The Cellar", RATT will be playing the album in its entirety.

Both bands are excited about the double bill. "Warren DeMartini and Nuno Bettencourt on same stage, same night?? 'Nuff said, we'll see you there!" says RATT's Bobby Blotzer. EXTREME's Nuno Bettencourt concurs, "One hot summer night. Two bands fully loaded with musicianship. Mix in one part memorable songwriting. Add nine ounces of passionate performers. Throw in three well-respected guitarists. Add a touch of West Coast raunch and a hint of East Coast funk. And you get yourself a recipe for one night of unforgettable rock and roll."

AEROSMITH To Perform Entire \'Rocks\' Album Later In Tour`

Reuters reports that AEROSMITH has been playing its classic 1975 album "Toys in the Attic" in its entirety on the band's current tour (which kicked off on June 10), with the notable exception of the closing track "You See Me Crying".

AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry told Reuters that the song is too difficult for vocalist Steven Tyler to sing right now, but Tyler hopes he will be able to do it after a few more shows. At any rate, the band expects to swap out "Toys in the Attic" in about two weeks, and play all the tracks from its 1976 follow-up "Rocks", Perry said.

KAMELOT \'In Final Stages Of Pre-Production\' On Next Album

Guitarist Thomas Youngblood of American/Norwegian melodic metallers KAMELOT has issued the following update:

"We are now in Germany to begin the first stages of pre-production on the next KAMELOT album. It's great to be back in this familiar region and environment we know so well. We are, of course, very excited about the new ideas and the upcoming recordings."

KAMELOT will once again work with producers Sascha Paeth and Miro, with the recording/mixing sessions scheduled to take place at studios in Germany, Norway and the USA.

SPV/Steamhammer recently released KAMELOT's "Ghost Opera" (2007) and "The Black Halo" (2005) albums as gatefold double LPs. This marks the first vinyl releases for the band.

KAMELOT singer Roy Khan's 86-year-old grandfather Kåre joined the band on stage on May 23, 2009 in Elverum, Norway to perform the song (on accordion) "Danse mi vise, gråte min sang". Watch fan-filme video footage of the performance below.

THE RED CHORD: New Album Title Revealed

According to the new issue of Revolver magazine, Boston, Massachusetts death metal/grindcore band THE RED CHORD has set "Fed Through The Teeth Machine" as the title of its fourth album, tentatively due this fall via Metal Blade Records. The CD is being recorded at Jonny Fay Backyard Studios, which is owned by the band's former guitarist Jonny Fay, and it will be mixed and mastered by Chris "Zeuss" Harris, who has previously worked with HATEBREED and SHADOWS ALL, among others.

Regarding the new album title, vocalist Guy Kozowyk said, "It's from the Discovery Channel show 'How It's Made'. They were talking about this machine they feed zippers through, but we just though the name was creepy."

The disc will be the band's first since the mid-2007 depature of Faye, whom the group chose not to replace. "With the economy being so bad, we figured it was time to downsize," Kozowyk said, only half-joking. "Writing as a four-piece is actually more efficient because there's one less opinion you have to deal with."

Kozowyk says the new songs are more intense and mature than those on 2007's "Prey for Eyes". "It's faster and heavier, but it's definitely groove-oriented and melodic where it needs to be," he said.

KATATONIA: First Part of Studio Diary

KATATONIA's Jonas Renkse has issued the following update:

"After a long nocturnal car ride through heavy rain and on frog flooded roads, me, Daniel and David (recording engineer) finally found the lonesome path leading to a studio pretty much located in the middle of nowhere. We got the gear into the studio, had a quick lookaround and were then heading for bed. Both me and Daniel were (are) sick and since drugs are a big part of rock 'n' roll lifestyle we went through our medicine stash and found a big bottle of cough surpressing stuff that would also provide extra good sleep... yummy."

"Day two was all about getting the drums up. Provided with a beautiful orange Gretsch kit Daniel started to play around with his setup. It took some time. Putting up all the microphones took some time as well. By midnight we could finally hear the sound of the drum kit through the studio monitors."

"Me and Daniel had a walk around the studio building and found: 1. an electric fence (that we wanted to but didn't have the guts to touch) and 2. two cows (that we wanted to but didn't have the guts to touch). Time to hit the sack again with some sleep providing liquid."

"Day three, four and five can be compressed into one word: drums. The ultimate instrument. Daniel is playing better than ever despite his sickness and the new material is shining even more with real drums on the songs. Difficult parts (to my ear) are smoothly executed and easy going parts are... easy going. It's interesting to discuss with Daniel about the direction the drums are headed for certain songs and parts, since this is the first time we've actually met and listened through the new material together... that's the way we work, folks. Exciting times ahead!"
