SUSPERIA Vocalist Suffers Heart Attack

Athera (real name: Pal Mathieson), vocalist with Norwegian metal band SUSPERIA, was rushed into Akershus Universitetssykehus Hospital in Lørenskog, Norway on the morning of March 9 suffering from acute stomach pains and heavy bleeding. Initial tests revealed that the singer had suffered a heart attack caused by a damaged blood vessel. Athera is currently in the intensive care unit under close observation, while further tests are carried out. He is expected to remain hospitalized for the foreseeable future. At this moment, future plans, including touring commitments, remain unchanged until a full diagnosis of his condition has been confirmed.

Athera (pictured below) recently completed vocals on SUSPERIA's fifth studio album, which is due for an early summer release through the band's new label, Candlelight Records. The group worked continuously throughout 2008 on the LP, which Athera described as "going back to the early days with the melancholic riffing and dark emotional vocals and coming all the way through to today, with a perfect blend of everything SUSPERIA has been and become."

Former GORGOROTH Members GAAHL And KING OV HELL To Announce New Band Name

BLABBERMOUTH.NET has received the folowing statement from bassist King ov Hell (real name: Tom Cato Visnes) and vocalist Gaahl (real name: Kristian Espedal) regarding the latest developments in their legal dispute with guitarist Infernus over the rights to the GORGOROTH band name:

"Regarding the recent court case over the use of the name GORGOROTH, Gaahl and King confirm that parts of the verdict have been decided and went in favor of Infernus. This is only a partial verdict on the case. Because of the complexity of this case, there will be further court hearings and the final verdict will be announced within a few weeks.

"The judge came to the conclusion that it is impossible to kick out an original member even if he doesn't contribute musically or lyrically. The judge also states that one can't kick an original member out of a band even if that member performs actions which are viewed as disrespectful towards promoters, session members and other working partners.

"Gaahl and King wish Infernus the best of luck using the banner of GORGOROTH on his art.

"Gaahl and King will still present the art they are known for creating in GORGOROTH albeit under another banner. The new name will be announced shortly."

Infernus (real name: Roger Tiegs) filed a lawsuit against King ov Hell in September 2008 claiming that King (the sixth bass player in GORGOROTH's history) went behind his back in September 2007 and secretly applied for trademark protection of the GORGOROTH bandname and logo, which Infernus had been using since 1992.

The witnesses that testified in court — besides Infernus, Gaahl and King Ov Hell themselves — during the January 28-30 trial in Oslo, Norway were as follows:

* Torgrim Øyre (former GORGOROTH member, booking manager at Hole In The Sky Festival)
* Anders Odden (ex-CELTIC FROST, CADAVER INC.)
* Tormentor (former GORGOROTH member, now member of the Infernus lineup)
* Espen Solheim Røhne (Norwegian distributor Indie Distribution, who has sided with Gaahl and King Ov Hell)
* Per Gyllenbäck (Regain Records, who has sided with Infernus)
* Asbjørn Slettemark (from Norwegian music industry magazine Faro Journalen)
* Gro Narvestad (Inferno Festival)

Gaahl and King entered the studio on August 25, 2008 in the their hometown of Bergen, Norway to begin recording eight new tracks composed by the bassist for an as-yet-untitled new album. Along with Gaahl, King and Frost (SATYRICON) on drums, the full recording lineup includes Teloch (guitar) and Ice Dale (guitar). ENSLAVED's Herbrand Larsen once again produced the band in the studio.

Convicted Murderer VARG VIKERNES To Be Released From Prison

Varg Vikernes (a.k.a. Count Grishnackh) — the former BURZUM mastermind who is currently serving a Norwegian prison term for the August 1993 murder of MAYHEM guitarist Oystein Aarseth (a.k.a. Euronymous) and setting fire to three churches — will soon be a free man.

In September 2008, Vikernes's fourth application for parole was denied, but a couple of weeks ago he finally received the message he has been waiting for: after almost 16 years in prison, he will be released.

"I will have to report [to the parole officer] for one year — initially every two weeks, and then once a month," Vikernes told the Dagbladet newspaper.

Varg's mother, who last year wrote a letter to Dagbladet in which she argued that her son was being unfairly treated by the justice officials who repeatedly denied his parole application, is very relieved that her son will be able to join his family in Bø (a municipality in the county of Telemark, Norway), where he recently purchased a small farm.

"I am very happy that he has been so strong and that he held out," she said. "It will be good for the family that they can be together every day."

For the past couple of years, Varg has been allowed to leave the prison regularly to walk around Tromsø, Norway (where the prison is located) and visit his family: his mother, his wife, eighteen-month-old son and sixteen-year-old daughter.

"I'm ready for society — and I have been for many years," Vikernes told Dagbladet last July . "I have learned from my mistakes and become older. Now I just want to be together with my family. My mind has never been in prison; I think all the time about what I should do on the day that I am released." He added, "I have barely seen my son since he came into the world. Even though I hear his voice on the phone almost every day, it is very tough to not be present while he is growing up. I miss my family. And I look forward the day that I could work on my farm, create music, write books and be with the wife and kids around the clock — and live a normal life. I have received tremendous support from my family. It means a lot."

Last year it was reported that case workers at the Justice Ministry feared that Vikernes would be unable to adjust to life on the outside after his years in jail.

In denying his parole for the second time, the Justice Ministry emphasized that Vikernes escaped from prison in 2003 and that he has ties to neo-Nazi groups.

"I haven't been in contact with them for a long time. Police security services know this," Vikernes previously told the VG newspaper.

INFERNUS Claims Victory In GORGOROTH Name Dispute

The verdict has been reached in the dispute over the rights to the GORGOROTH band name involving vocalist Gaahl, bassist King ov Hell and the group's estranged guitarist Infernus.

Infernus (real name: Roger Tiegs) filed a lawsuit against King ov Hell (real name: Tom Cato Visnes) in September 2008 claiming that King (the sixth bass player in GORGOROTH's history) went behind his back in September 2007 and secretly applied for trademark protection of the GORGOROTH bandname and logo, which Infernus had been using since 1992.

A posting on Infernus' MySpace page reads as follows: "Oslo City District Court has today [Tuesday, March 10] delivered a verdict on the main question in the GORGOROTH trademark case, which took place at the end of January 2009. The court has decided that King ov Hell's trademark registration #243365 of the band name GORGOROTH is NOT valid and shall therefore be deleted. The court states that King ov Hell and Gaahl excluded themselves from the band GORGOROTH when they tried to fire Infernus in October 2007. The court further states that Infernus cannot be excluded from GORGOROTH, unless he himself decides to quit. Infernus is very pleased, but not surprised, by this verdict. The remaining issues concerning financial matters and such are yet to be decided upon."

* Gro Narvestad (Inferno Festival)

EPICA Begins Recording New Album

Dutch female-fronted symphonic metal act EPICA entered Gate Studio in Wolfsburg, Germany on Monday, March 2 with producer Sascha Paeth to begin recording the follow-up to 2007's "The Divine Conspiracy", tentatively due before the end of the year via Nuclear Blast Records. According to the band, drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek "is doing great so far. The beast already nailed five songs; he's been drumming for about 12 hours [on Tuesday]!"

Vocalist Simone Simons previously stated about EPICA's new material, "It is so exciting! I love the new songs and can't wait to play them live."

"The Divine Conspiracy" was EPICA's first full-length concept album. According to the band, "This concept deals with the theory that, as a test, God created all kinds of different religions and released those upon humanity to see if they would be able to find the true nature of them, realizing that in all religions it is actually the same. But there's more to it; it also concludes the 'Embrace That Smothers' concept that could already be found on [2003's] 'The Phantom Agony'."

Nuclear Blast Records released a limited deluxe CD edition in Europe of "The Divine Conspiracy", featuring the bonus tracks "Higher High" and "Replica" (FEAR FACTORY cover), video clips and a "making-of" enhanced section.

In a recent interview with U.K.'s Rock Sound magazine, SOULFLY mainman Max Cavalera revealed that the band has already began preparation for the next studio album which he stated "will not be as intense as [2008's] 'Conquer' but not as poppy as [2000's] 'Primitive' either; somewhere half way between the two."

Writing on SOULFLY's official message board, the band's bassist Bobby Burns confirmed that "we'll more than likely record a new record sometime towards the end of [2009], but it won't hit the streets until next year."

As previously reported, the two B-sides from SOULFLY's "Conquer" recording sessions at the Porch Studio in Orlando, Florida have been made available for streaming at the band's MySpace page. SOULFLY's latest video, "Unleash", was directed by Robert Sexton, who has previously worked with MONDO GENERATOR, AMEN and ICED EARTH, among many others. The song is the first single from "Conquer".

METALLICA\'s HAMMETT: \'We Still Care And Have Tremendous Love For One Another\'

U.K. web site The Skinny has posted METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett's response to a question that was originally posed by STONE TEMPLE PILOTS/ex-VELVET REVOLVER frontman Scott Weiland.

Weiland: How do you keep one band together for so many years?

Hammett: "There have been times when we've absolutely hated the sight of each other, but deep down we still care and have tremendous love for one another. We truly are a family, and with Rob [Trujillo; bass] in the band now, we feel that with him too. The chemistry is great. It's also a love and respect for what we’ve done in the past and knowing that makes the future look very bright and very clear now. James [Hetfield; guitar/vocals] said the other day, 'People want us to be together.' That, to me, was such a profound statement, and it's fucking true. Certain people need us to be together and that makes it worth staying together as a band. There was a point where we were about to just fall apart, but we cared enough to go through all that we had to, to still be a band. Of course, that's all been well documented."

Resurrected Florida-based death metallers MASSACRE have issued the following update:

"Well, it seems that both the drummer and bassist positions may have now been secured for the 'new' MASSACRE lineup.

"Kam Lee [vocals] has spoken to both bassist Dave Pybus (CRADLE OF FILTH) and to drummer Tony Laureano (DIMMU BORGIR, 1349, NILE, ACHERON) and both have shown a great interest and desire to join with Kam and MASSACRE to bring forth the new album in 2010.

"Kam is very pleased and excited to have these two fantastic musicians and great fans of MASSACRE interested in helping make a 'new' MASSACRE album a reality. And also — it seems that Mirai (SIGH, NECROPHAGIA) has agreed to help out by creating and playing some very eerie keyboard intros and outros for the album as well. His fantasic musical skills and insight is both an overwhelming welcomed thrill and very exciting addition as well.

"However, the guitarist positions are still being held open for auditions! As of now, several guitarists have already sent in several audition songs and riffs, while others are still being waited on for their submissions. Kam is trying to be both fair and to be very selective with who he shall pick to fill the position of guitarist as Kam feels this is both a very important — as well as a very crucial — decision to make and is not a position to take lightly... The person chosen as guitarist must be able to bring to MASSACRE the same kind of style, playing ability, and overall 'feeling' as shown on the 'From Beyond' album, but also must be able to adapt to playing and writing in a modern format. Being able to bring the old-school style and sound, but also being skilled enough to adapt to bringing a modern approuch to the music as well. NO RUSH DECISIONS will be made in choosing the gutarist. All submissions will be taken into consideration — and shall be seriously reviewed for the position."

A different version of MASSACRE — consisting of DENIAL FIEND members Sam Williams (guitar), Curt Beeson (drums; NASTY SAVAGE), along with ex-MASSACRE/DENIAL FIEND members Terry Butler (bass), Steve Swanson (guitars) and Kam Lee (vocals) — completed a European tour in late 2007.

Swedish progressive death metallers SKYFIRE will release their fourth album, "Esoteric", in the fall of 2009 via Pivotal Rockordings. The cover art, which can only be described as "epic," was created by Pär Olofsson, who has previously worked with BRAIN DRILL, PSYCROPTIC, SPAWN OF POSSESSION, and PERSUADER.

The recording process for "Esoteric" took place at Powernest Studios in Gothenburg, Sweden. Studio blogs can be viewed at Revolution-Music.dk.

The follow-up to 2004's "Spectral", "Esoteric" is scheduled to be mixed and mastered by Jonas Kjellgren (SCAR SYMMETRY) at Black Lounge Studios (SONIC SYNDICATE, SCAR SYMMETRY, THE ABSENCE, ZONARIA).

SKYFIRE bassist and founding member Martin Hanner previously stated about the upcoming CD, "Expect the traditional SKYFIRE sound, but also expect some new elements that we have never experimented with before. We also cannot wait to work with Jonas Kjellgren, who will be mixing and mastering the new record. He is one of the most talented up-and-coming producers in metal right now, and we are certain that he will take SKYFIRE's sound to the next level!"

During the search for other musicians, Joe, James, and Derek expressed interest in the project and the current lineup took shape.

In The Studio With PARADISE LOST: Swedish Newspaper Report Available

Swedish newspaper Nerikes Allehanda has posted a five-minute video report from the Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden where U.K. gothic metal icons PARADISE LOST are recording their new album with producer Jens Bogren. Due in late 2009 via Century Media Records, the highly anticipated follow-up to 2007's "In Requiem" will feature around 10 tracks, including "First Light", "As Horizons End", "Faith Divides Us, Death Unites Us", "Frailty" and "My Last Regret".

Commented vocalist Nick Holmes: "We are very happy with [producer] Rhys Fulber's work on the last album ['In Requiem'], but after working on three albums together, we decided it was time to go for a different approach. After hearing the work he did with our 'Anatomy Of Melancholy' live DVD, we decided that Jens Bogren was the man for the job."

He continued, "There is no full-time replacement for [drummer] Jeff [Singer] as yet, but as far as the album is concerned, the drum stool will be occupied by another Swede — Peter Damin. Sweden hails some of the best metal musicians in the world and Peter is no exception. We really look forward to working with him and his input on the album.

"Our approach this time has leaned even more towards the heavier side of things, even more so than the last. It is vital not to lose touch with our musical trip over the last 20 years. Our music may have had different facelifts, but it has always been 'dark' and the new album will be no exception. Musically and lyrically.

"Writing a new album is always exciting; we never get bored of writing music, and for me, it is the best part of being in a band. Each album is like a challenge to better ourselves, or at the very least, do something that's different to everyone else. We strive to make the ultimate modern gothic metal album, and for me that has nothing to do with the common trend of 'romance' and 'roses.' It should be music to be murdered by."

In 2008, PARADISE LOST celebrated its 20th anniversary and to properly commemorate this event performed several special anniversary shows with fellow British doom/goth pioneers MY DYING BRIDE and ANATHEMA. The band also released the stunning "The Anatomy Of Melancholy" live DVD/live album via Century Media Records last year.

Ascendance Records has announced the signing of the Swedish avant-garde rock band DIABLO SWING ORCHESTRA to a worldwide deal. The group's new album, "Sing-Along Songs for the Damned & Delirious", is tentatively due in September. As well as the normal release, Ascendance will be producing a strictly limited and numbered boxed version, available by direct mail order only. It will feature an exclusive DVD, a set of postcards, a pewter pendant and a sticker all in an embossed tin box. Full details will be made available closer to release.

"Sing-Along Songs for the Damned & Delirious" will be recorded at In Flames studio in Gothenburg under the supervision of producer Roberto Laghi who, besides his work on the latest IN FLAMES effort, has also worked with the likes of SONIC SYNDICATE, MUSTASCH and HARDCORE SUPERSTAR. Recordings will commence on April 6 and will be finished on May 1. Mixing will be done between June 1 and June 12. The band will be posting a studio report at the end of each week on its MySpace site so that you can follow how the recordings are progressing.

According to DIABLO SWING ORCHESTRA, fans of the band's 2006 self-released debut, "The Butcher's Ballroom" (later licensed to Candlelight Records in Europe and Sonic Cathedral in the U.S.), will recognize the DSO sound but it has developed into something even more playful and at times far more aggressive than before.

The unique genre-hopping Swedish sextet has already garnered an ever-growing army of fans on the strength of "The Butcher's Ballroom" and its European festival perfomances, including Metal Female Voices Fest and Summer Breeze.

BEHEMOTH Mainman Auctioning His Firs-Ever Seven-String Guitar

Guitarist/vocalist Adam "Nergal" Darski of Polish extreme metallers BEHEMOTH is auctioning a seven-string Ibanez guitar via eBay. He says, "This guitar is an integral part of BEHEMOTH's history. My first-ever seven-string axe that I bought right before we entered the studio to record 'Zos Kia Cultus'. It's a great-playing instrument that sounds just awesome and heavy as fuck! I used this axe in the studio to nail songs like 'Slaves Shall Serve' from 'Demigod' or 'As Above So Below' from 'Zos Kia'. You can also see me playing that beast in the video clips to these tunes. Also, it served me well during multiple tours all over the world!"

For more information and/or to place a bid, go to this location.
