LIONHEART Feat. Ex-IRON MAIDEN Guitarist DENNIS STRATTON: New Album Due In Early 2020

Metalville Records has announced the signing of the veteran British hard rock band LIONHEART. The group is currently working on new material, and a fresh studio album, tentatively titled "Reality Of Miracles", will be released during the spring of 2020.

LIONHEART was formed in 1980 by Stratton along with guitarist and keyboardist Steve Mann and bassist Rocky Newton, both of whom were later to play with MSG. Mann is also playing in the current lineup of MICHAEL SCHENKER FEST. The LIONHEART lineup is completed by original drummer Clive Edwards (ex-UFO) and undoubtedly one of the best singers in the U.K. at the moment, Lee Small (ex-SHY). During the 1980s, they toured constantly, selling out the infamous Marquee club in London on repeated occasions, and completing tours with WHITESNAKE and DEF LEPPARD. They also played at the legendary Reading Festival in 1981.

In 2017, LIONHEART released its first studio album since the classic "Hot Tonight" record from 1984. Titled "Second Nature", it was hailed by the critics as a triumphant return for the band, and LIONHEART has now headed back into the studio to record a follow-up album.

"We have about 10 songs on the go at the moment," Stratton said last fall, "and they are just sounding fantastic. We can't wait to bring this out."

LIONHEART is:

Lee Small (lead vocals)

Dennis Stratton (lead guitar, backing vocals)

Steve Mann (lead guitar, keyboards, backing vocals)

Rocky Newton (bass, backing vocals)

Clive Edwards (drums)

Last year, LIONHEART released a Christmas single called "Mary Did You Know".

SONS OF APOLLO Completes Mixing And Mastering Second Album

SONS OF APOLLO — the progressive metal supergroup featuring vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (TALISMAN, JOURNEY), bassist Billy Sheehan (MR. BIG, DAVID LEE ROTH), guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal (GUNS N' ROSES), keyboardist Derek Sherinian (DREAM THEATER, BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION) and drummer Mike Portnoy (DREAM THEATER, THE WINERY DOGS) — has completed work on its second album.

On Friday (October 11), Sherinian tweeted a photo from the studio and wrote: "Another one in the books!! SOA 2 is mixed, mastered and off to the record company! Can't wait for you to hear this!!!"

Portnoy added in a tweet earlier today (Saturday, October 12): "Yesterday, Derek & I signed off on the SOA2 masters! The album is now officially signed, sealed & delivered to the label...I’m now on my way to LA where the 5 of us will reconvene tomorrow to shoot videos and photos for the new album. More info coming soon!"

SONS OF APOLLO will embark on a tour of North America in early 2020. Support on the trek, which will kick off on January 24 in Pomona, California, will be provided by guitarist Tony MacAlpine, who previously played alongside Sherinian in PLANET X and with Portnoy, Sherinian and Sheehan in PSMS.

SONS OF APOLLO's debut album, "Psychotic Symphony", came out in 2017. The band toured in support of that album for much of 2018 and recorded a live LP in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, "Live With The Plovdiv Psychotic Symphony", in September of that year; it was released on August 30 via InsideOut Music.

During a recent interview with "The Blairing Out Show With Eric Blair", Soto discussed what to expect from the group's sophomore effort. "We proved that we can pretty much do anything, so I would like to see us do a little more of anything, as opposed to just what's expected of us," he said. "I think we're going to be able to pull that off on the next record. I don't think we need to be [more progressive]. What I love about this band is where it came from, [and that] we went out and proved that we could play virtually anything. Now I think it's time for us to kind of prove like what QUEEN and VAN HALEN did when they proved that they were the baddest in the land. They could tap into other things that you wouldn't expect them to do, and I think that's the next step for SONS OF APOLLO."

Thal voiced similar sentiments during a recent interview with the Detroit radio station 101 WRIF. "I think it will still sound like us," he said. "That's not something we can get away from. It will be similar, I'm sure, to the first record, but maybe just turning up the intensity knob. I'd like to — I'd like the heavier stuff to be heavier, the crazy stuff to be crazier and just really up the intensity... I just really want to make sure we outdo the last record, and the record after this upcoming one outdoes this one, and we just keep raising the bar and demanding more of ourselves and meeting that higher setting that we keep pushing [for]. In anything, you just always want to become better. You want to keep bettering what you've done and keep growing and keep improving and keep developing. I'm excited to take that step and see what we come up with."

Watch SAMMY HAGAR And JERRY CANTRELL Perform ALICE IN CHAINS, MONTROSE Classics In Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

ALICE IN CHAINS' Jerry Cantrell was one of the special guests on night one of Sammy Hagar's 72nd birthday bash on October 9 at Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Fan-filmed video footage of the performance can be seen below (courtesy of YouTube user "The Attitude").

For nearly 30 years, Hagar has celebrated his birthday, jamming with his many rock star friends at Cabo Wabo, the cantina he built in 1990 in a sleepy little village on the tip of Baja. The event has grown exponentially every year, with Hagar's milestone 70th birthday spread over four days with 2,000 available tickets chosen by lottery. The entire thing was filmed for "Red Til I'm Dead", a combination concert film and backstage documentary.

"We had 100,000 people in the lottery [in 2017]," Hagar told The Mercury News at the time. "Fans trek from all over the world. Every year, the biggest fans make it there from Japan, from Australia, from all over Europe."

He added with a laugh: "I'm glad we filmed [the 70th birthday bash] because I don't know how much longer I can keep doing this."

SAMMY HAGAR & THE CIRCLE — the singer's supergroup with former VAN HALEN bassist/bandmate Michael Anthony, drummer Jason Bonham and longtime Hagar guitarist Vic Johnson — has spent the last few months touring in support of its debut studio LP, "Space Between".

Hagar recorded a pair of influential albums with MONTROSE and launched a successful solo career before joining VAN HALEN. After his exit from the band, he returned to his solo career and formed several other projects along the way.

SUICIDE SILENCE Completes Work On Sixth Album

California-based extreme metal titans SUICIDE SILENCE have completed work on their sixth studio album. The disc was produced by Steve Evetts (EVERY TIME I DIE, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN) and was mixed by Josh Wilbur (LAMB OF GOD, GOJIRA). A 2020 release date is expected.

SUICIDE SILENCE's latest, self-titled album came out in February 2017 via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. The CD was produced by Ross Robinson, who has previously worked with KORN, SLIPKNOT, LIMP BIZKIT and SEPULTURA, among others, and was mixed by Joe Barresi (KYUSS, MELVINS, TOOL, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE).

The controversy over the album's sound — featuring a more melodic and clean singing style, in the vein of acts like DEFTONES and KORN — caused one disgruntled fan to launch a petition to stop the record coming out.

SUICIDE SILENCE's performance at the December 2015 benefit show in support of Mental Health America Of Los Angeles (MHLA) at The Observatory in Santa Ana was released this past July as the album "Live & Mental" via Nuclear Blast.

"Live & Mental" was produced by the band while mixing was handled by Josh Gilbert (WOVENWAR, AS I LAY DYING). The cover photos were shot by Jerry John Nicholl.

Watch METALLICA's KIRK HAMMETT Join UFO On Stage In Hollywood

METALLICA's Kirk Hammett joined UFO on stage last night (Saturday, October 12) at the Megacruise pre-cruise party at the Avalon in Hollywood, California to perform two songs: "Doctor Doctor" and "Shoot Shoot". Fan-filmed video footage of his appearance can be seen below (courtesy of Joel Steele and Alex Vigil).

In an interview with Guitar World magazine, Hammett spoke about how his life was changed when he first heard UFO's 1975 album "Force It", which featured Michael Schenker on guitar.

"I was 15 years old and a friend of mine brought it over to my house insisting I had to hear it," Hammett recalled.

"I was still living at my parents' house at the time, and they had a very loud stereo system. My friends would come over and we would blast it up to what we thought was concert level. Boy, was I naïve!

"The first track my friend played was 'Mother Mary', and I thought, wow, these guys are just as heavy as THIN LIZZY, AEROSMITH, MONTROSE and all the other hard rock stuff that I was listening to before I got into heavy metal.

"When it got to the guitar solo, I was just blown away by Michael Schenker's tone, phrasing and technique. By the time the second solo came on with the fastest descending lick I'd ever heard, I was totally hooked! I immediately grabbed the album cover and saw the picture of Schenker playing a Flying V.

"From that point on, I knew there was an entire rock vocabulary out there that was not just based on pentatonic scales, and I set out to learn as many Schenker solos as possible while trying to write heavy riffs just like UFO. I also wanted a Flying V so bad!

"That record taught me a lot about solo structure, phasing and melody, as well as playing for the song. I was amazed how UFO could be so heavy and so melodic in the course of one song. I think the band I was in at the time added two UFO songs to its set that week.

"For me, the standout tracks on 'Force It' are 'Mother Mary', 'Shoot Shoot', 'This Kid's', 'Out On The Street' and 'Let It Roll'. Every time I pick up the guitar and start improvising, I think a lick or two from that album squeaks out subconsciously. I probably spew the most Schenker licks on [METALLICA's 1983 debut album] 'Kill 'Em All' because everything was still kind of new to me at that time."

Hammett and Schenker first traded licks during the taping of VH1 Classic's "That Metal Show" in April 2015 at Metropolis Studios in New York City. Less than a month later, Kirk joined Michael on stage at the RockBar in San Jose, California to perform a couple of songs: UFO's "Natural Thing" and SCORPIONS' "Blackout".

GEOFF TATE Joined By Professional Opera Singer MICHELLE LAJEUNESSE For 'Suite Sister Mary' Performance In Portland (Video)

Former QUEENSRŸCHE frontman Geoff Tate was joined by professional opera singer Michelle Lajeunesse on stage on October 10 at the Star Theater in Portland, Oregon to perform the band's classic song "Suite Sister Mary". Video footage of her appearance can be seen below.

Tate is still celebrating the 30th anniversary of QUEENSRŸCHE's "Operation: Mindcrime" album on his current tour. The "Mindcrime" live set covers all 15 songs from the album including such fan favorites as "Revolution Calling", "Operation: Mindcrime", "I Don't Believe In Love" and the closing track, "Eyes Of A Stranger".

In April 2014, Tate and QUEENSRŸCHE announced that a settlement had been reached after a nearly two-year legal battle where the singer sued over the rights to the QUEENSRŸCHE name after being fired in 2012. Original QUEENSRŸCHE members Michael Wilton (guitar), Scott Rockenfield (drums) and Eddie Jackson (bass) responded with a countersuit. The settlement included an agreement that Wilton, Rockenfield and Jackson would continue as QUEENSRŸCHE, while Tate would have the sole right to perform the albums "Operation: Mindcrime" and "Operation: Mindcrime II" in their entirety live.

Tate has been replaced in QUEENSRŸCHE by former CRIMSON GLORY singer Todd La Torre.

Tate will perform the QUEENSRŸCHE albums "Rage For Order" and "Empire" in their entirety on the "Empire 30th Anniversary Tour" in 2020.

Reunited Original Lineup Of DISMEMBER Performs At SCANDINAVIA DEATHFEST (Video)

The reunited original lineup of the 1990s Swedish death metal band DISMEMBER played its first comeback show last night (Saturday, October 12) at the Scandinavia Deathfest 2019 festival at Kraken in Stockholm, Sweden. Fan-filmed video footage of the concert can be seen below.

DISMEMBER's lineup for the show was as follows:

Matti Kärki - Vocals

David Blomqvist - Lead Guitar

Robert Sennebäck - Rhythm Guitar

Richard Cabeza - Bass

Fred Estby – Drums

DISMEMBER will also appear at next year's edition of the Maryland Deathfest.

DISMEMBER's original lineup released a couple of acclaimed albums in the early 1990s, including the classic debut, 1991's "Like An Ever Flowing Stream", which was heralded as a milestone for the then-burgeoning Swedish death metal scene.

The latest, self-titled album from DISMEMBER was released in Europe in 2008 via Regain Records.

DISMEMBER called it quits in October 2011, several months after performing at Germany's Death Feast Open Air festival. The show marked DISMEMBER's first concert since 2008.

In August 2016, Estby told Invisible Oranges about a possible DISMEMBER reunion: "People were telling me that all the time. So maybe we should try to do some shows and get everything back. We always owned our rights to the albums and shirts, but there's still loose ends to tie up. I just wanted to set the record straight and hopefully do some shows in the future."

Watch PHILIP ANSELMO Perform PANTERA Classics At AFTERSHOCK Festival

MA Entertainment Global has uploaded video footage of PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS performing the PANTERA classic "Mouth For War" on October 11 at the Aftershock festival at Discovery Park in Sacramento, California. Check it out below. Also available is a clip of the "Walk" performance from the same show.

This past summer, Philip Anselmo spoke to Revolver about his decision to play a number of PANTERA songs during the current tour with his solo band, PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS.

"We were about a month out from touring [the second ILLEGALS album, 'Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue'] when Vince Paul [Abbott, PANTERA drummer] passed away and that was horrific and so unexpected," he said. "It was something that stopped me dead in my tracks. I was in my kitchen and I just dropped to the floor and just had to breathe for a little while. That's when the big plea for us to do more PANTERA songs became irresistible. The tribute had to be then. It had to be right. And I never thought it would be THE ILLEGALS. Clearly the mission for us was to be a sweaty hole-in-the wall death-metal band. I've got to say huge props to them for learning the PANTERA material. They didn't even flinch, man, and just went for it.

"The vibe from most of the shows have been so fucking great, man," he continued. "And what really tickles me is seeing the young bloods out in the audience, freaking out on the PANTERA stuff. And you know it's their parents who got them into PANTERA."

On the topic of whether his PANTERA tribute will continue into the future, or if it's something he is doing right now, Anselmo said: "I'd like it to be just for now. For me, PANTERA was PANTERA and there's no substitute. So playing those songs, I didn't mind doing it for a one-off thing here and there with a group of guys — we used to do it in 'Metal Masters', [with] Kerry King and the ANTHRAX guys. But I wasn't going to learn a set of PANTERA with another band. I didn't feel entitled to do that. It's not like I feel entitled now. I feel now it's necessary."

Asked if Vinnie's death made him think any differently about the PANTERA days and the aftermath, Anselmo said: "The only thing I can say is, if I could go visit a 20-something-year-old version of myself, I would say, 'Put the fucking bottle down, son.' Treat your body like an elite athlete and make sure that there is a very clear communication between myself and the rest of my band.

"It's a frustrating thing because my lower back injury was so fucking bad, it was torture from the second my eyes opened until I fell asleep," he said. "I made every rookie mistake in the book. I ended up sleepwalking through the fucking day because I didn't want to exist. It felt like my skeleton had betrayed me. It was a common lower injury, a blown-out disc. It was just at the wrong time — [1994's] 'Far Beyond Driven' was just getting wrapped up. And once I got that phone call, 'Hey, your record's No. 1,' I knew what was going to happen — world tour after tour after tour. That was the big dream anyway. And I couldn't do it, man. Neurosurgery was still barbaric at that time. I had to wait until 2006 to have any surgery at all and by then three discs had blown. I had the second surgery in 2018. I'm doing tons better now. You're thrust into a circumstance and I wouldn't wish that on anybody, man."

Up until his death in June 2018, Vinnie remained on non-speaking terms with Anselmo, whom the drummer indirectly blamed for the death of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, who was his brother.

Vinnie Paul and Dimebag co-founded PANTERA. When PANTERA broke up in 2003, they formed DAMAGEPLAN. On December 8, 2004, while performing with DAMAGEPLAN at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, Dimebag was shot and killed onstage by a troubled schizophrenic who believed that the members of PANTERA were stealing his thoughts.

Vinnie Paul died of dilated cardiomyopathy, an enlarged heart, as well as severe coronary artery disease. His death was the result of chronic weakening of the heart muscle — basically meaning his heart couldn't pump blood as well as a healthy heart.

Vinnie was buried on June 30, 2018 next to his brother and their mother, Carolyn, at Moore Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, Texas.

Watch DOKKEN Perform In Agoura Hills

Fan-filmed video footage of DOKKEN's October 12 performance at The Canyon in Agoura Hills, California can be seen below.

As with all of DOKKEN's recent gigs, DOKKEN's longtime member "Wild" Mick Brown did not perform with his bandmates in Agoura Hills.

Don Dokken recently told "The Classic Metal Show" that Mick was "done" playing drums. "He's retiring, basically," he said.

"People don't realize, if anybody in the band — guitar player, singer, bass player… Singers lose their voice; bass players, whatever, get carpal tunnel, but a drummer, he's got the hardest gig in the band," Don explained. "And I told Mick years ago — years ago I told Mick — I said, 'Mick, you need to take it easy on the drums. You hit too hard. You're like John Bonham.' Anybody who's seen Mick knows he beats the hell out of those drums. And I said, 'Mick, just take it easy and just hit 'em softer and don't kill yourself.' And he said, 'I don't know how to play the drums any other way. I go out there and I just go for it and pound the drums as hard as I can. I don't know how to play like a jazz drummer. I'm a rock drummer.'"

DOKKEN is currently working on material on a new studio album, tentatively due in 2020 via Silver Lining Music, the label owned by Thomas Jensen, one of the founders of Germany's Wacken Open Air festival. It will mark the group's first disc since 2012's "Broken Bones".

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE – Four Interscope Studio Albums Reissued On Vinyl

Over nearly two decades, Queens Of The Stone Age have built a powerful and distinctive body of work that marks QOTSA as one of rock's most consistently audacious outfits. The band's reputation was built on its early hot streak of four smash releases: Rated R, Songs For The Deaf, Lullabies to Paralyze and Era Vulgaris. Interscope Records/UMe adds an exciting new chapter to QOTSA's catalog with high-quality 180gram vinyl editions of Rated R and Songs For The Deaf on November 22, 2019, and Lullabies to Paralyze and Era Vulgaris on December 20, 2019. Preorder here.

In 2000, Queens Of The Stone Age achieved a creative and commercial breakthrough with their major-label debut Rated R, featuring the breakout tracks "The Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret" and "Feel Good Hit Of The Summer." This new LP edition marks Rated R's first U.S. vinyl pressing, and is the first vinyl edition worldwide to feature the album's original blue artwork. This LP augments the original album with the international bonus track “Ode To Clarissa," as well as a unique 12"x24" insert.

2002's Songs For The Deaf became QOTSA's first gold album in the U.S. and their first platinum seller in Britain and Canada, spawning the hits "No One Knows," "Go With The Flow" and "First It Giveth." The musical cast includes guest drummer Dave Grohl, who put his own band Foo Fighters on temporary hold to record and tour with Queens Of The Stone Age. Songs For The Deaf's new vinyl edition is a two-LP set with a gatefold jacket and a 12"x12" insert, with the album's original red background and black graphics/text art making its first-ever LP appearance. Vinyl Me, Please will be featuring an exclusive vinyl edition for Songs For The Deaf in November, stay tuned for more info.

Queens Of The Stone Age's 2005 release Lullabies To Paralyze debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard album charts. Along with the hits "Little Sister" and "Burn The Witch," Lullabies To Paralyze features guest appearances by Jack Black, ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, Shirley Manson of Garbage and Jesse Hughes of the Eagles Of Death Metal. The new vinyl release of Lullabies To Paralyze features a gatefold jacket with the album's original album art in the U.S. for the first time, and includes the original three vinyl bonus tracks: "Infinity," "Like A Drug" and "Precious And Grace."

2007's Era Vulgaris finds QOTSA touching on a variety of styles, incorporating electronic and acoustic textures alongside the band's trademark heavy rock crunch. The album includes such fan favorites as "Sick, Sick, Sick," "3's & 7's" and "Make It Wit Chu," with guest appearances by Julian Casablancas of The Strokes and frequent QOTSA collaborator Mark Lanegan. RAY ALDER Says He Didn't Want His First Solo Album To 'Sound Like FATES WARNING'

Josh Rundquist of That Drummer Guy recently conducted an interview with FATES WARNING frontman Ray Alder. You can listen to the entire chat below. A few excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

On releasing his first solo album, "What The Water Wants":

Ray: "Honestly, FATES was really busy doing a lot of things — obviously the two albums we did over the last five years, and all of the touring and everyone was busy. Then [FATES WARNING leader] Jim [Matheos] was doing the 'Awaken The Guardian' reunion thing. Everyone has been really busy. I took a break while he was doing that. I wasn't doing anything. Then he was going to do another ARCH/MATHEOS and I knew there was going to be quite a break in between the next FATES WARNING, so I went, 'All right, maybe this is the time for me to do something.' Now that I live in Europe, music is my only form of income, so I was basically, like, 'I have to do something.' And I wanted to. I actually wanted to do something different, work with different people and see how it was. It ended up being a lot of work, but it was a lot of fun. It's odd for me. When I record vocals or write my melodies for FATES, I have Jim to bounce ideas off of. This time it was a little more difficult because I was not being produced. I was self-producing the music. It's something I'm not quite used to. It ended up okay, I think. I'm pretty happy with it."

On assembling the musicians for his solo band:

Ray: "I didn't know exactly who to use at first. Here in the city of Madrid [Spain], I met this guy, Tony Hernando, he's the guitar player in this band LORDS OF BLACK, who are sort of a power metal band. He's a good guy, a great guitar player, a sort of a guitar-hero kind of guy. I started talking to him and I was saying I was thinking about doing a solo album and whether he'd be interested. He said, 'Yeah, of course, man. What do you hear? What kind of music are you listening to? What do you want to have on the album?' I said 'I don't really know. Let's start working on stuff and see what fits.' It started out from there. I knew right away that I wanted to use Craig Anderson for the drums. He's from the hardcore band IGNITE. He's a longtime friend of mine, one of my best friends in the world. He's a great drummer, super solid. I've worked with him a few times before. Tony and I were working on things; we had a few songs down. He and his band were busy with other things and they were having problems with his singer; he was really busy. He couldn't really focus as much as he wanted to or as I wanted him to. I believe I was on tour with FATES. Mike [Abdow, FATES WARNING touring guitarist] said, 'You're doing a solo album. I just want to you let you know if you're interested, I'm happy to contribute.' I said, 'Absolutely. I'd love to hear what you have.' He started sending me songs. I loved what he was sending me. I loved the vibe; I loved the feel. Everything about it was great. So we just started moving on from there. Mike ended up writing seven of the songs. Tony wrote three. That's pretty much what it is. There are still some songs that we didn't use. I just wanted to use the ones that I felt that fit best on this album. There are a few songs still laying around that I think are pretty good, but didn't make it to the album at this point. Who knows? We'll see."

On the musical approach he took for "What The Water Wants":

Ray: "I wanted it to be interesting, too. I didn't want to be pigeonholed. I didn't want to be in one genre, and I especially didn't want it to sound like a FATES WARNING album or rehash music from FATES. I wanted it to be different. I wanted to highlight what I can do vocally. There's a lot of harmonies. There are some songs that have eight tracks of vocals. I was just having fun with it. It's not something I would normally do in FATES. That was the cool part about it."

"What The Water Wants" will be released on October 18 via InsideOut Music. The LP was mixed by Simone Mularoni (RHAPSODY, MICHAEL ROMEO, DGM).

CYNIC's PAUL MASVIDAL Releases New EP, 'Hand To Mouth' Video

MASVIDAL, the solo project of songwriter and guitarist Paul Masvidal (CYNIC, DEATH, AEON SPOKE), has returned with "Human", the second EP installment of his "Mythical Human Vessel" acoustic trilogy on AWAL. Paul has also made available a video for the track "Hand To Mouth" created by New York City experimental artists Greymar.

After an acclaimed career as the songwriter and guitar player for the influential progressive groups CYNIC and DEATH (whose fourth album earned a spot among Rolling Stone's "The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time"), he now delivers his first solo effort under the moniker MASVIDAL. Produced by three-time Grammy winner Warren Riker (LAURYN HILL, FUGEES, SANTANA), "Mythical Human Vessel" is a departure from what his legions of fans have heard from him before. Ben Ratliff of The New York Times described Masvidal as one who "can expand his own sense of calm into an aggressive, extravagant art." In this offering, Masvidal continues to channel music that is quietly powerful.

Drawing on influences from musicians John Lennon, Brian Eno, Chet Baker, Russill Paul and Elliott Smith to visual artists Mark Rothko, Ai Weiwei, Hilma af Klimt, the songs embrace concise forms and catchy melodies in spite of their often-painful subject matters of loss, depression, and heartache. In Masvidal's view, pain is not something to be feared but embraced as inevitable and, ultimately, a doorway.

Beyond Paul's ethereal aesthetic and progressive point of view, each song on the EP uses "isochronic tones" designed by Dr. Stephane Pigeon, creator of the Brian Eno-celebrated web site MyNoise. The tones are a groundbreaking type of sound therapy for increasing serotonin, alleviating depression and stress, improving focus, and aiding in restful sleep.

Major kudos to mixer/producer Warren Riker, who transported this intimate collection of material into another dimension. Everything sounds open, airy, and warm, thanks to Riker's gifted ears.

"Human" follows the spring 2019 release "Mythical" as the second part of Masvidal's conceptual trilogy. All three records will eventually be packaged together and released as the "Mythical Human Vessel" box set around summer 2020 along with an active touring schedule and an eventual immersive dome show.

"Human" track listing:

01. Beggars

02. Hand To Mouth

03. The Spaces

04. Come Come

05. Warrior Of The Universe

06. Human

MICHAEL SCHENKER - "I Fell In Love With Heavy Metal When I Heard LED ZEPPELIN And BLACK SABBATH"

Guitar legend Michael Schenker recently sat down with Louder Sound and discussed his career, guitars, music and personal philosphies. Following is an excerpt from the interview.

The lead guitar is pure

Schenker: "I fell in love with heavy metal when I heard Led Zeppelin and and Black Sabbath, and I use that as a screen. Of course, I'm not playing what they did. I put my own screen together. It's not jazz, and it's not pop. It's metal. I use that screen to put my lead guitar on. Each note has to have a meaning. If you have three notes, what's going to be the fourth? The one that gives you goose pimples? That's what I do when I wrote things like the intro to 'Holiday'. Or 'Try Me'. Or 'Doctor Doctor'. My fascination is with the single string, and what you can do with it. There are endless combinations: Hit a string twice. Hit a string three times. Hit it twice. Leave a gap. Hit it again. Make vibrato. Don't make vibrato. Let it sustain. It goes on and on and on!

I still have a way of putting meaning behind notes, even if I play fast. Playing fast is usually very technical: there's no vibrato, no emotions. But if you consciously put those fast notes together, you can ensure that each note – if you play them in slow motion – comes from a really good place. And then, when you play them fast, it will still be effective."

Don't regret anything

Schenker: "I'm sitting here today, and I'm quite happy. You can't regret anything, because every choice and every move brings you to the next destination. If we make too many wrong choices we can end up towards the dark, and everything gets darker and darker. If we makes the right choices we end up towards the light. In other words, you feel happier and more unhappy, based on the choices you make. If you take shortcuts, it will backfire later, and bring you trauma or unhappiness. But if you're true to yourself, the feedback is great. I'm happy."

TOTENGEFLÜSTER Release Official Video For "On Carrion Wings"; New Album Available

Southern German symphonic black metal troop Totengeflüster released their sophomore album on October 11th via Black Lion Records. Titled The Faceless Divine, this opus is the most intense and darkest creation of the band to date. The official video for the song "On Carrion Wings" can be viewed below.

Vocalist Narbengrund Nihilis offers: "'On Carrion Wings' is the opener of our third album, The Faceless Divine (apart from the intro obviously) and starts right away with a blast in your face! The song is subdivided into three thirds: a blasting start (the rise and fall of the protagonist), an epic and symphonic middle and a… Let’s call it ‘modern’ and rhythmic finale (the awakening or the revelation).”

Guitarist Totleben adds: “When I composed ‘On Carrion Wings’ I wanted to reach new ground with the song, something different to what Totengeflüster did before. Sure, we still use our iconic sound but it still feels like a new territory which feels fresh and sophisticated. Producing the video to it was a great step forward and an opportunity for us to show how we have grown in the last time. One step follows another and I think we did a big step in the right direction. Supported by a great crew, and especially Karoline Hanna from Rock In Raw Photography and her camera assistant Tobias Marr, we got the quality we were aiming for. The location also represents the feeling and atmosphere of the written and performed music in the best way, I think. Editing the video and making sure this clip delivers the message and feeling was let me say … ‘a joyful challenge’. I’ve learned a lot and I’m very proud of the result.”

The Faceless Divine is availabel for streaming below.

The Faceless Divine by Totengeflüster

The tracklist is as follows:

"The Arrival Of The Withered"
"On Carrion Wings"
"The Hollow Wanderer (Cursed)"
"The Hunt"
"Affliction"
"Extinct Paradise"
"Grant Us Thy Blessing"
"Vermin"
"Reise Eines Verlorenen Geistes"
"Requiem"
"Entflamme Mich" (Bonus)
"The Hollow Wanderer" (Satin Version - Bonus)

Totengeflüster is a new but constant growing force formed in 2007. They managed to become fairly big player in the European underground black metal scene following the success of their latest album, Im Nebel der Vergänglichkeit. The band has been on a consistant touring cycle across European soil and performing at various clubs and festivals across the country, including the reknown Summer Breeze and Wolfszeit Festival.

AKTAION Reveal “Oblivion” Music Video

Swedish metal band, Aktaion, have released a music video and single for “Oblivion”, the track is taken from their third album Above Empires which was released on August 23, 2019. The video was made by Eddie Berg of Liftamountain (Atena, Visions Of Atlantis, Imminence).

The song is produced by Francis Larsson, Oskar Johnsen Rydh & Axel Croné. Recorded at Obsidian Recording Studios (Hammerfall, The Unguided, Despite) / Robert Kuklas.  Mixed and mastered by Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman (Arch Enemy, Armageddon, At the Gates).

Above Empires is the third Aktaion full length following 2015's Throne and 2016's Parade of Nature. "With this album the main goal we wanted to achieve was to get straight to the point!" states guitarist Francis Larsson. "Riffs; straight to the point, song structures; straight to the point, lyrics; straight to the point. Before, we ventured into longer songs with many layers but this time we wanted to challenge ourselves in exploring fewer elements in each song, and getting the most out of each riff and melody. This album is also a first for Aktaion as we, in contrast to our first two albums, went into a studio. We collaborated with Studio Fredman and Obsidian Recording Studios for the recording, and mixing and mastering together with Fredrik Nordström. With this album we really took our time with writing and pre-production as we had almost a whole year to prepare for the studio. We recorded several versions of the songs, and from an early stage worked together with Robert Kukla at Obsidian Recording Studios. In the end we surpassed everything we done in the past in terms of sound and songs. This is the ultimate Aktaion experience."

DAN MCCAFFERTY - Former NAZARETH Frontman Streaming Samples From Upcoming Solo Album

Dan McCafferty is streaming samples of his upcoming Last Testament album in the trailer below:

There are very few classic rock vocalists that you recognize after hearing just a few notes. The legendary Dan McCafferty, the former frontman of Scottish rockers Nazareth, is one of those vocalists. After nearly 50 years of road work with the band, McCafferty had to retire due to health reasons. However, that unique instrument - his voice - is still capable of blowing the roof off.

With 15 tracks, Last Testament is a blistering album with a full mix of lyrical and musical styles. It arrives on October 18 via earMUSIC. There are out and out rockers, like "My Baby" and "Bring It On Back," for example. But at the core of this release is a newfound freedom to explore avenues of creativity.

There are songs of reflection like, "You And Me," "Looking Back," and the very emotional first single "Tell Me," plus "Sunshine," which features a guest vocal by Nazareth bandmate Pete Agnew, which are tender love songs.

McCafferty teamed up with Czech composer, accordion, and keyboard maestro Karel Marik, who is the author of all music and the producer of album, while McCafferty has written all the lyrics.

Recorded and mixed at Substation Studio in Rosyth Scotland by sound engineer Duncan Aitken and mastered by Eike Freese at Chameleon Studios Hamburg, Last Testament is a unique outstanding album which will surprise, challenge, and delight his countless fans throughout the world.

Finnish/Dutch/British symphonic metallers NIGHTWISH will release "Decades: Live In Buenos Aires" on December 6 as a Blu-ray digibook, 2CD digipak, Blu-ray+2CD earbook and 3LP via Nuclear Blast. The "Decades" tour ran from March 9, 2018 to December 15, 2018 and consisted of stops in 82 cities across Europe, North America and South America.

Tentatively due in the spring, NIGHTWISH's next album will mark the band's second full-length release with singer Floor Jansen, who has been touring with the group since 2012.

Holopainen said last year that the arranging and recording process for NIGHTWISH's follow-up to 2015's "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" album would take most of 2019.

Tuomas also said that there is a lyrical theme tying together all the songs he has written for NIGHTWISH's next record, but he declined to elaborate.

In other news, Danny Wimmer Presents announces that Metallica will exclusively headline all five of the premier independent producer’s hard rock festivals in 2020 in a unique collaboration unprecedented for any American festival promoter or band. Recently named the world’s biggest all-time touring act by Pollstar, Metallica will - for the first time ever - perform two separate headlining sets at all of the following events in 2020:

“Metallica isn’t just another headliner. When Metallica takes the stage, it’s an event. It’s an experience. That’s the same standard we’ve set for every DWP festival – from the first band to the last band, and everything that happens in between. I can’t wait to bring the biggest band in the world to the biggest rock festivals in America,” says Danny Wimmer, founder of Danny Wimmer Presents, the largest independent festival producer in the U.S. “Metallica paved this road that we travel. How many artists on the bill at these five festivals first picked up an instrument, or first started a band, because of Metallica?”

Tickets for all events go on sale today for Fan Club members and for past purchasers of tickets for Danny Wimmer Presents events. The general public on-sale begins Monday, October 14 at 9 AM, PT / Noon, ET. MACHINE HEAD Releases Music Video For Ferocious New Song 'Do Or Die'

MACHINE HEAD has released the official Marius Milinski-directed music video for its new track "Do Or Die". The track is available now on all digital platforms via Imperium Recordings/Nuclear Blast.

"Do Or Die" was produced by MACHINE HEAD frontman Robb Flynn and Zack Ohren (FALLUJAH, ALL SHALL PERISH) at Sharkbite Studios in Oakland, California. It was mixed by Russ Russell (AT THE GATES, NAPLAM DEATH, SIKTH) at Parlour Studios in the United Kingdom. The mastering was handled by Gene Grimaldi at Oasis Mastering in Burbank, California.

The "Do Or Die" cover artwork was created by Marcelo Vasco and can be seen below.

"Do Or Die" was recorded last December by Flynn, bassist Jared MacEachern and WARBRINGER drummer Carlos Cruz.

Cruz stepped in to play on "Do Or Die" following the departure of MACHINE HEAD's longtime drummer Dave McClain.

"I had just been wanting to make music, and so right after we got done with the last tour, I was, like, 'I've gotta make music,'" Flynn explained during an August Facebook Live session. "I had all these fucking songs written for months now, since April [of last year], and I wanted to go and write them and record them and jam them with the dudes. So my engineer Zack arranged for Carlos Cruz, who is the drummer for WARBRINGER. He played in POWER TRIP — an awesome new, modern thrash band. Sick-ass drummer — awesome drummer. Young guy, really cool. He came up and jammed with Jared [MacEachern, bass] and I. [He] just fucking killed it. It was awesome playing with him. And it really inspired me, kind of brought me out of my funk. I'd been really wanting to write new music for a while, and it was just right place, right time. The dude was amazing, and I can never be grateful enough for everything that he brought to the table. Awesome dude."

Flynn said that MACHINE HEAD's session with Cruz yielded about four or five new "jams." "Not all the songs got finished, but it was just cool fleshing them out," he said. "And so it gave me a lot of time to work on 'em, sing vocals, all this stuff."

The release of "Do Or Die" will be followed by the arrival of more new songs from MACHINE HEAD. "We're gonna start dropping a steady stream of new music — standalone songs," Flynn said. "There's not gonna be an album; there's just gonna be a steady stream of standalone tracks that are consistently released. And then eventually they may or may not end up on an album. But we're mixing it up. We wanna do this new model where we can put stuff out faster and get new music out quicker to the die-hards.

"We wanna have this ability to not just have an album come out every three years, which is what we've been doing — every four years sometimes — and just make it quicker and more consistent and more like a regular thing," he explained. "I don't know what it's gonna be, but I'm definitely excited about it. I'm excited for you guys to hear this new shit."

Flynn previously told Metal Hammer magazine that he wrote "Do Or Die" in August 2018, before McClain and guitarist Phil Demmel announced they were leaving the band. "Two days after that announcement on Facebook Live, I was back in the studio and working on ideas and lyrics," he said. "I guess I was really just pissed off that day. After all the haters and all the negativity, all the bullshit. It's vicious!"

MACHINE HEAD kicked off the first leg of its 25th-anniversary tour for the band's classic debut, "Burn My Eyes", on October 5 in Freiburg, Germany.

Building on the band's previous "An Evening With…" format, the "Burn My Eyes" anniversary show is described in a press release as "a three-hour musical extravaganza," comprised of two parts: part one consists of a battery of MACHINE HEAD's modern classics, such as "Imperium", "Halo" and "Locust", featuring Flynn and MacEachern performing alongside new recruits, Polish guitarist Wacław "Vogg" Kiełtyka (DECAPITATED) and British drummer Matt Alston (DEVILMENT, EASTERN FRONT); part two features "Burn My Eyes" played in its entirety for the first time ever, with original drummer Chris Kontos and guitarist Logan Mader joining in.

Kontos left MACHINE HEAD before the release of the band's second album, 1997's "The More Things Change", and was replaced by McClain.

Mader contributed to two MACHINE HEAD albums, the aforementioned "Burn My Eyes" and "The More Things Change", before exiting the group and being replaced by Ahrue Luster and, later on, Demmel.

UNE MISÈRE Launch Music Video For New Single "Failures"

Icelandic wrecking crew, Une Misère, will be unleashing their full length debut, Sermon, unto the world on November 1 via Nuclear Blast Records.

Today, the band releases the music video for their second single, "Failures". It was a family affair as the video was produced by the band with their very own Gunnar Ingi Jones handling the directing. With a special thanks to Kex Hostel and all the kids who helped make this video. Watch the music video below.

Jón Már Ásbjörnsson comments, "'Failures' is about my journey off of drugs. The realization, the sobering up, the withdrawals and the self loathing it brought with it. It's a song of anger and of regret but as it breaks down, it becomes this release that one needs. It keeps me sober. The song goes out to the straight edge kids out there."

Sermon was produced and mixed  by Sky van Hoff with mastering completed by Svante Forsbäck. The album was engineered by Marco Bayatl, Sky Van Hoff and Marco Kollenz. The album artwork was created by Niklas Sundin.

The product of a modern age; the sonic nature of Une Misère cannot be easily defined. With an inherently heavy nature, the band sits somewhere on a vast spectrum of blackened hardcore and aggressive metal.

Toby Jepson's WAYWARD SONS Premier "The Truth Ain't What It Used To Be" Music Video; New Album Now Available

Wayward Sons have released their new album, The Truth Ain’t What It Used To Be, via Frontiers Music Srl. Watch a video for the title track below.

The album is available on CD, vinyl and digitally and order links are available here. There is also be a limited orange vinyl available from the band’s store and the label’s US and EU stores, here.

The new album could be called a concept record, as there is a narrative thread that connects the twelve tracks, but singer/guitarist and songwriter Toby Jepson, prefers to call it a 'protest' record and describes the new materials as 'political' but not of the sort that seeks to hammer the message home, more of a reflection of his take on where the world and we are. Jepson admires and draws influence from storytellers like Elvis Costello, David Bowie and Queen - artists who could pass on their message through their storytelling craft.

Wayward Sons is a UK guitar act made up of Toby Jepson (Vocals/Guitar), Sam Wood (Guitar), Nic Wastell (Bass), Dave Kemp (Keys) and Phil Martini (Drums). They have an impressive resume of groups they have previously worked with - Little Angels, Gun, Spear Of Destiny, Treason Kings and Chrome Molly to name a few - which is reassuring in terms of the band as players, but doesn’t really hint at their sound. Wayward Sons sound nothing like the sum of their parts. The music is hard rock, but mixed with a vitality and energy - both musically and lyrically.

Frontman Toby Jepson was, of course, the singer and songwriter in British rock act Little Angels, who enjoyed great success at home and abroad and achieved a UK number one album with their third release Jam.

Tracklisting:

"Any Other Way"
"Black As Sin"
"Joke's On You"
"Little White Lies"
"Feel Good Hit"
"Fade Away"
"Have It Your Own Way"
"Long Line Of Pretenders"
"If Only God Was Real"
"The Truth Ain't What It Used To Be"
"Punchline"
"Us Against The World"
