ARCH ENEMY Guitarist Talks About 'Rise Of The Tyrant' ConceptARCH ENEMY guitarist Michael Amott has revealed more information about the concept behind the group's new album, "Rise of the Trant", due on September 25 via Century Media Records.
Says Amott: "When Angela (Gossow) brought in the lyrics to what is musically the most extreme song on the album, I immediately loved the title she had for it. 'Rise of the Tyrant'. It had power, it had grace and it sounded like the music we were writing. We quickly decided to also name the album 'Rise of the Tyrant' — after all, we do aspire to dominate the metal scene with this album! Later I had the idea of adding the sample from the old 'Caligula' film at the front of the song. Caligula, the Roman Emperor known for his extreme extravagance, eccentricity, depravity and cruelty, perfectly enhanced the atmosphere of total megalomania that we were looking for.
"Although we have never delved into the marshy lands of a full-blown concept album, we do tend to write a few songs on each album that are connected lyrically and sometimes also musically. With 'Rise of the Tyrant' we threw in all the ideas and creativity that we could conjure – we wanted to make the most action packed and intense album of our career! This album is the final result of two years hard yet satisfying work."

Drummer DAVE CULROSS Quits MALEVOLENT CREATIONDrummer Dave Culross has apparently once again quit legendary Florida death metallers MALEVOLENT CREATION. No reason was given for his departure. Dave is said to be doing recordings with other bands at the moment as well as launching a new project. He is also looking to do some session work.
MALEVOLENT CREATION's new album, "Doomsday X", was released in the U.S. on July 17 via Nuclear Blast Records and in Europe on August 24 via Massacre Records. The CD was recorded and engineered at Mercury Recording Studios in Pompano Beach, Florida by longtime friend and producer (and sometimes session member) Gus Rios, and is said to be the most diverse MALEVOLENT CREATION album recorded to date and "without a doubt their fastest!!" Mick Thomson, guitarist for SLIPKNOT, contributed a "ripping" guitar solo to the song "Deliver My Enemy".

VENOM: New Album Pushed Back To Next YearBritish black metal pioneers VENOM have decided to re-record some of the already completed tracks for their upcoming album and push back the CD's projected release date to early 2008. Drummer Antony "Antton" Lant (brother of VENOM frontman Conrad "Cronos" Lant) explains: "During the Scandinavian tour [which took place in May 2007] we played through some of the new tracks in the soundchecks. There's something about the energy you deliver when playing on a stage that differs greatly from recording in a studio. All fired up, we tore the tracks to shreds. We tried to organize a mobile studio to get to the next shows, but it was way too late notice, so on our return to the U.K. Cronos hired some small venues for us to record some new backing tracks to work on. At the end of the day it's all about recording a great album, and this new album is sounding absolutely awesome."
In other news, work has started on a special DVD release of VENOM's classic videos. The Hammersmith show from 1984 ("The 7th Date of Hell") and the "Nightmare" video, along with new interviews with various members and never-before-seen footage from the musicians' personal archives will be included.
VENOM recently parted ways with guitarist Mykvs (a.k.a. Mike Hickey; ex-CARCASS, CATHEDRAL). "Personal unavoidable commitments in the U.S. have forced Mykvs to announce that he cannot commit 100% to VENOM's 2007 schedule," the band previously wrote in a statement. A new guitarist by the name of Rage has already been drafted in to replace Mykvs.
With regards to the direction of the band's next album, VENOM frontman Cronos previously said, "VENOM will be even darker and heavier for the next release. The new song ideas that Antton and I have been composing over the last year will be exactly what the 'legions' expect from us, and will really test the abilities of the band members. There's going to be a lot of blood spilled making the next album. This band belongs to the fans and I'm going to stay true to the spirit of VENOM no matter what sacrifices have to be made."

Guitarist STEVE SMYTH Parts Ways With NEVERMOREGuitarist Steve Smyth has officially parted ways with NEVERMORE, citing personal and business differences.
"All things find their end eventually, and at this time I wish to make it clear that this was mutually agreed between the band and myself," Steve said in a statement.
"I will continue on with other aspects of my music career, including the upcoming release of THE ESSENESS PROJECT, an all-instrumental album in the vein of progressive rock that is now finished and being prepared for release."
He continued, "After a year and four months of being out of the touring scene due to ill health and then a kidney transplant, I have finally been given a full health clearance by my doctors to go back on the road, and I am now ready to return to the stage.
"I am proud and extremely honored to have been a guest of Uli Jon Roth at his Sky Academy concert series this past weekend, August 24th and 25th , in L.A. What an awesome experience! To jam with one of the greatest, as well as several other incredible guitarists and musicians who have been big influences on my playing over the years, and to make new friends as well, the whole thing was just incredible. Many thanks to Uli for inviting me, it was truly an honor!
"I am now embarking on a six-week of tour of Europe with my friends from the Danish thrash metal band, SPV recording artists HATESPHERE, first supporting BEHEMOTH in Poland, and then joining the DIMMU BORGIR tour. I have been a fan of HATESPHERE and friends with the band since 2003, when they opened for TESTAMENT at a festival we played together, and absolutely look forward to getting out with them and together, crushing Europe!"
During Smyth's time away from the touring circuit, NEVERMORE has been utilizing the services of longtime session guitarist Chris Broderick (JAG PANZER).
NEVERMORE has begun the songwriting process for the follow-up to 2005's "This Godless Endeavor", tentatively due next year via Century Media Records.

AVANTASIA's 'Lost In Space' Parts 1 And 2 Pushed Back To NovemberEDGUY frontman Tobias Sammet has announced that the release date of the two new six-track albums from his AVANTASIA project, entitled "Lost In Space Part 1" and "Lost In Space - Part 2", has been pushed back to November 16 from the previously announced October 19.
"We have produced so much exclusive material for these two epics that we just needed the [extra] time," stated Sammet. "Except from the title track they contain completely different material, classy material, no bonus shit! In addition we decided to put some different video footage on each CD as well. We really had to postpone the release to warrant the AVANTASIA quality. But it will be worth the wait: This is the resurrection a project like AVANTASIA deserves. Fans will get two major releases, each for the price of a single. Many thanks to my record company that supported the idea. I know it may be insane business-wise, but the fans will reward it."
AVANTASIA's full-story album, "The Scarecrow", will be released at end of January next year via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD is expected to feature guest appearances by former HELLOWEEN frontman Michael Kiske, SCORPIONS guitarist Rudolf Schenker, rock legend Alice Cooper, Sascha Paeth, Henjo Richter, Eric Singer (KISS, ALICE COOPER), Miro, Jorn Lande (ex-MASTERPLAN), Bob Catley and Amanda Somerville.
AVANTASIA will perform at next year's Wacken Open Air festival, set to take place July 31 - August 2, 2008 in Wacken, Germany. Also scheduled to appear are IRON MAIDEN (headliners), CHILDREN OF BODOM and KREATOR.
In a recent interview, Sammet described the music on the new AVANTASIA CD as "diversified, pomp metal with some classic rock elements, Classic orchestrated moments and Celtic stuff, a big timeless production and so on and so forth. It's going to consist of many different elements. Bombastic kick-ass music with a lot of heart and depth."

Is DAVID BECKHAM An IRON MAIDEN Fan?The Sun Online reports that British soccer star David Beckham could wear a sumo wrestler outfit and look great but there's something about a guy in a rock T-shirt.
The trendy star stepped out in Washington D.C. yesterday dressed in this IRON MAIDEN tee.
We all know David's a huge hip-hop fan but maybe his wife Victoria (of the SPICE GIRLS fame) advised him that it’s much cooler to wear a rock top — even if you're not down with the heavy guitar.
But could David name any of MAIDEN's songs?

MOTÖRHEAD's 'Stage Fright' DVD Gets An UpgradeMOTÖRHEAD's "Stage Fright" DVD was released in the U.S. earlier this year, but is now getting an upgrade — it is the first music HD DVD to feature online functions. The HD DVD production, released on SPV and produced in collaboration with Authoring Studio Imagion AG, is due out October 10, 2007 and will be the first HD DVD worldwide to use HD DVD-standard online functions.
Since the U.S. saw the arrival of the first two HD DVDs featuring online functions in early July, MOTÖRHEAD's "Stage Fright" will be the first music production to follow suit and join the roster of dynamic HD DVDs. As defined by the HD DVD standard, each player will have a network interface to expand the pressed disc with additional contents.
MOTÖRHEAD fans can look forward to the latest news and tour dates, pictures and fan artwork, which will be integrated in the HD DVD menus via the network interface of the Imagion HD DVD server. In the "Motörhead for Live" section, MOTÖRHEAD fans will be invited to present their latest tattoos, constantly expanding the HD DVD's tattoo gallery.
In addition to this highlight, the HD DVD will offer even more attractive and innovative features. An exclusive picture-in-picture video commentary sees the band talk about each of their songs and their performance at the concert, which was recorded in December 2004. The Create SetList option supports the compilation of individual set lists and the arrangement of the concert according to the viewer's preferences. The Snapshot feature makes it possible to "shoot" photos while replaying the concert, enhancing the disc with a personal picture gallery. The HD DVD also includes the bonus material from the "Stage Fright" double DVD.
Next to top-quality high-definition audio-visual features, the HD DVD will come with numerous interactive features such as picture-in-picture video commentaries and the option of compiling individual photo galleries or set lists. AC/DC: 'Plug Me In' DVD Box Set Track Listing RevealedColumbia Records will release "Plug Me In" — the ultimate career-spanning DVD box set of live performances, interviews and more from AC/DC, the world's most electrifying rock and roll band — on Tuesday, October 16.
The first AC/DC release since the band came to Columbia Records earlier this year, the AC/DC "Plug Me In" DVD collection brings together for the very first time an astonishing five hours of definitive live concert and television performances — many of them previously unavailable — chronicling the ongoing career (now in its fourth decade!) of a groundbreaking rock and roll powerhouse whose music transcends the test of time.
"AC/DC has delivered the most dynamic rock and roll music in the world," said Steve Barnett, Chairman, Columbia Records. "Columbia is honored to be releasing this definitive career-spanning retrospective featuring many of AC/DC's finest filmed performances."
Disc One of the AC/DC "Plug Me In" DVD collection begins with a performance of "High Voltage" performed in October 1975 on Australia's "King of Pop" awards show. The first disc of "Plug Me In" is devoted to the band's formative years (1975-1979) with the late Bon Scott capturing the group in its full early glory with more than 20 performances including rare black-and-white video footage of the notorious St. Albans High School concert on March 3, 1976; the very first UK television appearance in July 1976; pristine live full-color stereo concert performances from Glasgow and Essex University in 1978; and three songs — including the very first public performance of "Highway To Hell" — from Netherlands television in 1979. Bonus material on Disc One includes a Bon Scott interview from November 1977; extraordinary band interviews from 1976; and four songs recorded live in Nice on December 15, 1979, one of Bon Scott's last concerts with the band before his tragic death on February 19, 1980.
Disc Two of the AC/DC "Plug Me In" DVD collection covers the band's second great epoch: the Brian Johnson era which began with the release of "Back In Black" in 1980 and continues to this day. In addition to more than 20 performances drawn from three decades of concerts around the world — including an extremely rare Japanese television appearance from February 1981, blistering '80s and '90s sets from Detroit to Moscow, incredible footage from 1996's "Ballbreaker" tour (including the "Beavis & Butthead" intro), and 21st century barnburners in Paris, Munich, and Toronto — "Plug Me In" includes a fantastic array of bonus material including the AC/DC Donnington interview on the "Old Grey Whistle Test" (August 1984) and AC/DC's in-concert performance of "Rock Me Baby" with THE ROLLING STONES.
A deluxe collector's edition of "Plug Me In" — containing a third DVD of 21 additional rare performances spanning both the Bon Scott and Brian Johnson eras as well as a treasure trove of facsimile reproductions of authentic AC/DC memorabilia — will also be available for a limited time beginning Tuesday, October 16.

BLINDED COLONY Parts Ways With Vocalist And Bassist; Replacements AnnouncedSweden's BLINDED COLONY has parted ways with vocalist Johan Schuster and bassist Roy Erlandsson due to professional differences. Stepping in as new and permanent, full-time members are Jeoan Olsson (EVILDOER) on bass and Denny Axelsson (THE BEREAVED, ex-MARAMON, WITHIN REACH, CALM) on vocals.
Guitarist Tobias Olsson comments: "It's always sad when one has to part ways with bandmembers since they more or less become like a family member. Though when people feel uncommitted, or make other career choices, you have to respect it and go on and try to make that best out it.
"BLINDED COLONY is thrilled and happy to announce our two new members, Denny Axelsson and Jeoan Olsson, to our ranks. These guys are really experienced and full-time pros at what they do.
"At last I would like to send out a big thank you to Johan and Roy for their time in BLINDED COLONY; it's been a blast! And good luck with whatever you take on in the future.
"To the rest of you, we have some tour plans coming up, so we hope to see ya guys soon and that you'll give the new members a warm welcome on the road."
New vocalist Denny Axelsson stated: "First of all I would like to send a BIG fucking THANK YOU to all the fans who showed up on my three first shows with BLINDED COLONY here in Sweden and gave me a really warm welcome. A very special thanks goes out to all the fans in KarIshamn who where just awesome beyond belief! I'm very glad to be the new singer in the BLINDED COLONY family and I'm looking forward to a shitload of fun on this kick ass metal journey….And most of all meeting all of you guys out there and give you a big fat BLINDED COLONY blast experience."
New bassist Jeoan Olsson commented: "It's great to be a part of BLINDED COLONY! We've been friends for quite some time and hopefully we will become even tighter and closer as friends and as band members. I'll make sure that my responsibilities in the lower frequencies and in the headbanging departments are dead on! Hope to see you guys in the front of the stage!"
BLINDED COLONY's sophomore release, "Bedtime Prayers", was released in January through Pivotal Rockordings. The band followed up the release with a 38-day tour with EKTOMORF and KAYSER. The band plans to continue touring in the fall.
