AXEL RUDI PELL Putting Finishing Touches On New Album; 'One Night Live' DVD Due Next Month
 German guitarist AXEL RUDI PELL and his solo band have finished recording their new studio CD which he calls "definitely our masterpiece!" He adds, "Everybody in the band is so excited about the new songs and I really can say that it will be our best album by far."
Pell and producer Charlie Bauerfeind (BLIND GUARDIAN, HAMMERFALL, RAGE) are currently finalizing the new album mix for a tentative spring release.
In other news, AXEL RUDI PELL will release a new DVD called "One Night Live - Live At The Rock Of Ages Festival 2009" in Germany on February 19 and in the rest of the world on February 22. Pell states, "As the title [implies], [the disc] features our complete 75-minute performance [at] last year's Rock Of Ages festival in Germany. We definitely didn't do any overdubs, so what you hear and see is what really happened that night, with all the mistakes and 'blue' notes! But that's liv(f)e!!!"  | 0 |  |

ZONARIA Preparing To Enter Studio
 Swedish death/black metal band ZONARIA has completed the songwriting process for its new album and will soon enter the Abyss studio in Sweden with producer Jonas Kjellgren (SCAR SYMMETRY, SONIC SYNDICATE, HYPOCRISY, CENTINEX, CARNAL FORGE) to begin recording the effort for a spring/summer release.
Commented vocalist/guitarist Simon Berglund: "I'm stoked about going into the studio with Jonas. He did an amazing job on [ZONARIA's 2007 release] 'Infamy And The Breed' and has done some more incredible work with other bands. And not to mention recording in studio Abyss for the first time. REQUIEM AETERNAM: 'Purposiveness' Video Released
 "Purposiveness", the new video from melodic black metallers REQUIEM AETERNAM — originally from Uruguay but most recently based in Tampa Bay, Florida — can be viewed below. The track comes off the band's third album, "Destiny-Man". Around February/March 2010, the band will announce the official release date for the effort and the label that will be responsible for issuing the CD.
"Destiny-Man" was mastered in March 2009 at Morrisound Recording in Tampa. The album is set to feature "ten tracks — 50 minutes of anguish," according to the band.
The ten tracks on "Destiny-Man" are inspired — not based — on ten classical composers, including Takemitsu, Beethoven, Mozart, Piazzolla, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, Chopin, Paganini and Villa-Lobos.
Commented guitarist/vocalist Jose Romero Sum: "This [is] our most ambitious work to date. I have written more music for this recording than for both former albums put together. This is] our uppermost attempt to consolidate a new style within metal music: philosophical metal."

 SHINING frontman Niklas "Kvarforth" Olsson has recorded vocals for a track on the forthcoming second album from Norwegian black metallers GRAVDAL, "Torturmantra". The song, entitled "Mishandlet", was laid down at the Erebus Odora studios in Sweden with producer Peter Bjärgö.

SLAYER Cancels Tour Plans; TOM ARAYA Scheduled For Back Surgery
 California thrash metal legends SLAYER have been forced to cancel all of their immediate tour plans — including the American and Canadian Carnage tour dates with MEGADETH and TESTAMENT that were set to kick off on January 18, as well as the band's European headline tour scheduled for March and April.
SLAYER bassist/vocalist Araya, known for aggressively swinging his long mane of hair while performing, began experiencing back problems while on the band's Australian/New Zealand/Japanese tour last October. In spite of his rapidly increasing pain and discomfort, he carried on with the tour, but immediately upon returning home saw an orthopedic specialist who diagnosed a cervical radiculopathy. The rocker initially did not want to take the major surgery route, so the specialist recommended a series of minimally-invasive procedures. While those procedures have resulted in some improvement, Araya continues to deal with intermittent bouts of severe pain, numbness and muscle spasms.
"Tom gave various medical treatments more than a fair shot," said SLAYER's manager Rick Sales, "but they just haven't handled the problem, so he's biting the bullet and is scheduled for back surgery at the end of this month."
The surgical procedure that Araya will undergo, called an anterior cervical discectomy with fusion, is a relatively routine practice and the recovery rate is excellent.
Booking agents for both SLAYER and MEGADETH are already hard at work rescheduling tour dates; tickets already purchased for all shows will be honored at the rescheduled dates.
Sales added, "As unfortunate as this is for so many people — the MEGADETH and TESTAMENT camps, the concerts' promoters, and, of course, the fans — Tom's health is the number one priority, and this has to happen."

EXCALION: New Song Available For Streaming
 "Enter A Life", a brand new song from Finnish symphonic power metallers EXCALION, is available for streaming on the band's MySpace page. The track comes off the group's third album, "High Time", which is scheduled for release on January 29 via Limb Music. The follow-up to 2007's "Waterlines" was recorded at Watercastle studio in Jyväskylä, Finland. The CD was produced by EXCALION and Arttu Sarvanne and was engineered and mixed by Arttu Sarvanne. KORN Readying \'Funky, Heavy, Melodic\' New Album
 Revolver magazine recently spoke with KORN frontman Jonathan Davis and bassist Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu about the band's forthcoming ninth album, which is said to be a return to the group's earlier sound.
"We experimented with a lot of cool stuff on our last two records [2005's 'See You On The Other Side' and 2007's untitled effort], but we didn't want to do another record like that," Davis explained. "So we said, 'Let's strip it back again. Let's do this as a four-piece and make it real raw like the old stuff."
KORN worked on the new CD with producer Ross Robinson, who helmed the band's first two albums, 1994's "Korn" and 1996's "Life is Peachy".
"We figured if we're gonna go back [to the early KORN sound], we should do it with Ross," said Fieldy. "And it was great. Even though we hadn't seen him in years, it felt just like old times."
He added, "We made sure that every song we were working on had everything that represents the integrity that you hear on [KORN's 1994 debut]. There's on faster, really heavy song that's pretty different for us, but the rest is a combination of everything we were in '93. It's funky; it's heavy; it's melodic. It's everything, man. It's KORN."
KORN's forthcoming effort was tracked last October at the band's studio. "We recorded everything on tape, just like we did in the old days," said Davis. "And we didn't stack four or five vocal parts like I usually do. I'm singing one part for every song, which was scary. It's just me and the microphone, and you can really hear the emotion."
As part of Robinson's tireless quest to wring every last bit of emotion from his artists, he encouraged Davis to revisit past traumas to fuel his performance. "He used any kind of ammunition he had to get me into that headspace where I felt like I wanted to scream and run away," Davis said. "I basically went fucking crazy making this record. When I was done, I was emotionally gone and in tears and everything. And the memories don't just go away. I'd brew on 'em all day. It was rough."
KORN's ninth studio album is now being mixed for a June release.
The band has yet to sign a new record deal, after releasing its last two efforts through Virgin.
KORN is also rumored to be one of the headliners for this summer's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival.

Finland\'s ROCK Releases Another Song
 ROCK, the Finnish band featuring members of TWILIGHTNING, LULLACRY and MALPRACTICE, has posted a song entitled "Dance (Before The Night Is Over)" on the group's MySpace page. This track was apparently the first song ever composed by the project.
ROCK's debut album is "99.9% completed" and "we could not be more satisfied with the results," says the band.

Over the last two decades, Satriani has traveled the world, playing to sold-out crowds as both a headliner and as founder of the all-star "G3" guitar extravaganza. Of his 14 solo albums two went platinum and four gold with 15 Grammy nominations between them. In 2009, Satriani joined with former VAN HALEN frontman Sammy Hagar, former bassist Michael Anthony, and RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS' drummer Chad Smith, to form the stand out rock collaboration, CHICKENFOOT. Their debut self-titled album was recently certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America with over 500,000 in album shipments.

DARK DAYS AHEAD: Four Songs Posted Online
 Finnish metallers DARK DAYS AHEAD, who feature in their ranks members of TIMO RAUTIAINEN & TRIO NISKALAUKAUS, MANUFACTURERS PRIDE and WHERE VICTIMS LIE, have uploaded four new tracks from their upcoming promotional CD on their MySpace page.
An excerpt from the band's official biography: "Formed amongst the concrete desolation of Jyväskylä, Finland, DARK DAYS AHEAD perform their very own blend of heavy and groovy metal guaranteed to grind you to the ground.
"Formed in 2005, DARK DAYS AHEAD combine elements ranging from rootsy rock to death metal in their music, all bound together with a healthy splash of dark intentions. The members' previous and current formations, including names like TIMO RAUTIANEN & TRIO NISKALAUKAUS, PRIVATE LINE, MANUFACTURER'S PRIDE, WHERE VICTIMS LIE, BONE5 and SACRED CRUCIFIX, among others, can only give you a vague hint of what you are about to witness. PRIMAL FEAR Readying DVD, Live Album
 German power metallers PRIMAL FEAR have issued the following update:
"We are very close to sign a great deal for the forthcoming DVD, '16.6 - All Over The World', and our first official live CD, 'Live In The USA', soon. Everything looks very promising that we can present you a great-quality product around summer 2010 and the long-awaited first live album."
PRIMAL FEAR will return to the U.S. in May/June 2010 for a short tour, following up their highly successful select dates that took place late summer 2009. Support on the trek will come from LUNA MORTIS, with special guest REDEMPTION on the West Hollywood and Santa Ana shows.

KEEP OF KALESSIN Performs On Norwegian TV, Qualifies For \'Melodi Grand Prix\' Grand Final
 Norwegian extreme metal veterans KEEP OF KALESSIN are competing in the national Eurovision Song Contest called "Melodi Grand Prix". The band took first place in the first semifinal that aired earlier tonight (Friday, January 8) on NRK1 in Norway. The top two artists chosen by viewers via SMS — including KEEP OF KALESSIN — will take part in the grand final held at the Spektrum, Oslo on February 6. The third- and fourth-place artists will get another new chance to compete in a new TV show called "The Last Chance" where the top 2 artists will also go the final.

ABRUPTUM\'s IT Working On Book About His Life
 IT (a.k.a. Tony Särkkä), the founder of the long-running Swedish black metal band ABRUPTUM, has issued the following update:
"My final contribution to this 'non-extraordinary reality' will be a book about my life. For all these years I have chosen to stay silent, out of the 'spotlights' and now that I finally will vanish into shadows eternally; the time has come to let you know the truth.
"You will hardly find any material out there coming straight from my mind, as I refused interviews and contact with the 'outside.' Thus reading about me in books, on the Net, magazines or when watching various documentaries; I hope you kept in mind that not much of the information given has had any valid or real essence. There has always been so many distractions, falseness, lies, distortions to whom I have been and what I've done that the time has finally come to set things straight once and for all.
"As always, I work in my own pace and there is no deadline to this work, but material is been gathered in heaps. Also note that this book will hardly focus on my musical career, but my entire life.
"There is a time when even legends turn into myths..."
According to his official bio, "IT is considered by many as one of the most important and original songwriters that dark metal has to offer today, and is famed to go all the way with his creations, whether it be the uniqueness and poetic brilliance known as OPHTHALAMIA, torturing himself in the studio for ABRUPTUM or showing his couldn't care less humor with VONDUR. He, however, continues developing his inimitable vocals and certainly building as much detachment he could to everything. He has also written and performed for other acts, such as MARDUK and DISSECTION."
