KING KOBRA Are Back And Ready To Strike; New Album Due Out This Year
Formed in 1984 in Los Angeles by legendary drummer Carmine Appice (VANILLA FUDGE, CACTUS, ROD STEWART, OZZY OSBOURNE, TED NUGENT), KING KOBRA recorded two critically acclaimed albums for Capitol Records – the 1985 release Ready To Strike and 1986’s Thrill Of A Lifetime. The band featuring four relatively unknown musicians at the time – David Michael Philips on guitar, Mick Sweda on guitar, Johnny Rod on bass and Mark Free on lead vocals.
After the bands demise in the late 80’s, with Carmine joining BLUE MURDER, Mick Sweda to BULLET BOYS and Johnny Rod to W.A.S.P., the band is now back with the original classic '85 lineup with the addition of vocalist Paul Shortino (ROUGH CUTT, QUIET RIOT) to replace Mark Free (now Marcie Free).
A new album is touted for release in 2010 with touring to coincide.
Carmine Appice comments: "Since the break up of King Kobra in the '80s, I been touring the world with different bands, doing clinics, playing with Vanilla Fudge plus a 40-piece orchestra and my drum show SLAMM! Where ever I went people gave me KK. CDs and records to sign, and I thought that 2010 was the time to get the band back together to Rock! So KK is back with the original line up except for the singer Mark or Marcie today. Instead, one of my favorite singers Paul Shortino (Duke Fame) on vocals. So get ready to rock with KK in 2010!"

STONE SOUR Once Again Working With Producer NICK RASKULINECZ
STONE SOUR has scrapped its previously announced plans to work with producer Rob Cavallo (GREEN DAY, DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, PARAMORE, KID ROCK, AVRIL LAVIGNE, SHINEDOWN, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE) on the band's forthcoming third album. The group will now record the new CD in Nashville at Blackbird Studio with Grammy Award-winning producer Nick Raskulinecz (FOO FIGHTERS, VELVET REVOLVER, RUSH, ALICE IN CHAINS), who also worked on STONE SOUR's last album, 2006's gold certified "Come What(ever) May". A summer release via Roadrunner Records is expected.
Commented frontman Corey Taylor: "I cannot wait to make this STONE SOUR album. Everything already feels a million times stronger than anything we've done in the past. Plus getting back together with Nick is going to mean monstrous things. This is the year for STONE SOUR."
Regarding the musical direction of STONE SOUR's next CD, drummer Roy Mayorga said, "It's sounding very different from the last record in every way now that there are five writers, including myself. Some songs are heavy, dark, melodic and with a lot of color. A very well-rounded record this is going to be."
Taylor told Noisecreep that STONE SOUR's forthcoming CD will be "darker than 'Come What(ever) May', but a lot more melodic, a lot stronger, a lot more mature, and the lyrics that are coming out of me are really good. I'm really excited."
Taylor's main group, SLIPKNOT, just wrapped up more than a year of touring behind its 2008 album, "All Hope Is Gone", as well as a year-long celebration of the 10th anniversary of its major label debut.

JASON BONHAM Joins Forces With GLENN HUGHES In BLACK COUNTRY
Drummer Jason Bonham (LED ZEPPELIN) has joined forces with legendary bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes (DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH) and guitarist Joe Bonamassa in a brand new project tentatively dubbed BLACK COUNTRY.
"I just literally went into the studio last week for two days with one person I'd done an album with before, very quickly, and then the other was a friend of my father's I got to meet later on, Joe Bonamassa and Glenn Hughes, and we're working on a new project with a working title of BLACK COUNTRY," Bonham tells Spinner.com. "We just went in with [producer] Kevin Shirley [LED ZEPPELIN, JOURNEY, IRON MAIDEN, DREAM THEATER] and played riffs and just jammed for two days. And that's really exciting."
Bonham tells Spinner.com that the new group, which takes its name from the industrial area in England that he and Hughes come from, is in fact a band. "We're actually recording an album, literally in that process of jamming it out and editing and putting together and going, 'Yeah, that's really cool,'" he says. | 0

BELIEVER: In Writing Mode
Reactivated late '80s/early '90s technical-thrash metallers BELIEVER have issued the following update:
"We've been in writing mode for a couple months and now it's getting to the point where we are starting to piece together some very early 'pre-pre-production recordings.' These are very basic guitar-only tracks recorded to a click, for the purpose of helping Joey [Daub] to finish writing his drum parts and for all of us to get a very preliminary feel for the album as a whole.
"So far, much of the writing has taken place in various 'small-group' sessions containing two or three members of the band. We tend to set specific goals for each of these sessions. Whether it's coming up with new song ideas, refining ideas that already exist, recording scratch tracks or writing specific parts for specific instruments, we generally have an idea of what we want to accomplish before we get together. This helps us to stay focused on the task at hand and see continual progress."
BELIEVER performed live for the first time in 16 years on September 25, 2009 at Sterling Hotel in Allentown, Pennsylvania. | 0

Polish Political Party Goes After BEHEMOTH Frontman Over 2007 Bible-Tearing Incident
Gazeta.pl reports that two and a half years after vocalist/guitarist Adam "Nergal" Darski of Polish extreme metallers BEHEMOTH destroyed a Bible during a concert Poland, the national conservative Polish political party Prawo i Sprawiedliwosc (PiS) (English translation: Law and Justice) wants the band's frontman to be prosecuted for offending people's religious beliefs — a criminal offense under Polish law.
Darski made headlines in his native country in September 2007 when he reportedly called the Catholic Church "the most murderous cult on the planet" during a BEHEMOTH performance in Gdynia and tore up a copy of the Bible onstage (see video below). According to BEHEMOTH bassist Tomasz "Orion" Wróblewski, the incident was by no means a spontaneous outburst. "We'd been doing that for two years on tour before it happened in Poland," he told Decibel magazine in a 2009 interview. "So, we had discussed it many times before. A BEHEMOTH show is a BEHEMOTH show, and BEHEMOTH fans are coming to a BEHEMOTH show. BEHEMOTH fans know what BEHEMOTH is about, know what the lyrics are about, and know at least a little of the philosophy behind the band. So, it's kind of surprising that there are people coming to the shows and feeling offended with what we do onstage. If such a person comes to a show, he comes with the purpose of being offended, I guess, and it shouldn't be like that. We're not offending any particular person. We're just offending the religion that we've been raised in."
Ryszard Nowak, the head of the All-Polish Committee for Defense Against Sects (which was described by Decibel magazine as "little more than a one-man holy Inquisition in the style of Tipper Gore's famously sanctimonious Parents Music Resource Center of the 1980s") registered an official complaint with the authorities in Poland regarding the concert and a criminal investigation into the matter was launched in February 2008 by the Gdynia Public Prosecutor's Office, only to be terminated three months later.
"He attempted to bring me to court twice, but a council before the court — I'm not sure of the name — [dismissed] the case," Darski told Decibel. "Then the guy kept on calling me a criminal in public, so what I did was I went to the court and told them I felt offended by what he did because I'm not a criminal. I'm actually as far from being a criminal as I can be. I actually consider myself a pretty important part of society. I pay big taxes, and for many people around the world, they know about Poland because of BEHEMOTH." Darski countersued — and won: "I made the guy cover all the costs of the trial; I made him apologize to me in the biggest Polish press, and I made him pay a thousand dollars to a homeless dog shelter."
As of this morning (Wednesday, January 13) the case has been re-opened. Prawo i Sprawiedliwosc is arguing that BEHEMOTH's actions amount to nothing less than a "massive attack on Catholics" and wants the prosecutor to investigate whether Darski committed a crime by destroying the Bible, which professor Krzysztof Kowalik of University of Gdansk calls an object of religious worship that should be treated with respect.
Gazeta.pl was unable to get a comment from Nergal as he was on tour with BEHEMOTH in North America.

HIGH ON FIRE: New Song Available For Streaming
"Frost Hammer", a brand new track from the Oakland, California-based power trio HIGH ON FIRE, is available for streaming at Stereogum. The song comes off the band's long-awaited fifth studio album, "Snakes for the Divine", which will be released in Europe on March 8 via Century Media Records (under exclusive license from E1 Music). The follow-up to 2007's "Death is this Communion", which will be made available in North America on February 23 via E1 Music, was recorded at The Pass Studios in Los Angeles with producer Greg Fidelman and is described in a press release as "HIGH ON FIRE's magnum opus, capturing every nuance of the legendary band's ongoing musical progression and evolution into one of heavy music's all-time greats. Sharper, faster and darker than anything the group has ever recorded, 'Snakes for the Divine' is an unrelenting tour de force, showcasing cult guitar hero Matt Pike's utterly unique and inventive musicianship and the band's epic, thundering sound. Premium production by Fidelman — the man who produced SLAYER's 'World Painted Blood' and is mixing the upcoming METALLICA live album — boosts HIGH ON FIRE's strength and power while blackened lyrical tales of ancient wars, frozen planets and doomed societies emerge from Pike's bellowing barks and throaty war cries. From the moment the leviathan-like title track explodes to kick off the album, it is immediately evident that HIGH ON FIRE is determined to push modern heavy metal into new and uncharted realms."

BLACK SABBATH, OPETH, BIGELF Members Appear in \'Mellodrama: The Mellotron Movie\'
Tony Iommi of BLACK SABBATH, Mikael Åkerfeldt and Per Wiberg of OPETH, and Damon Fox and Steve Frothingham of BIGELF represent hard rock and heavy metal in the new feature-length music documentary "Mellodrama: The Mellotron Movie", available now on DVD from Bazillion Points. They join members of pioneering musical greats THE MOODY BLUES, KING CRIMSON, GENESIS, CHEAP TRICK, THE BEACH BOYS, GOBLIN, and many others in exploring the gripping and often obsessive tale of the Chamberlin and its better-known successor the Mellotron — the first musical keyboards to play the pre-recorded sounds of other instruments.
While the Mellotron is most closely linked with THE BEATLES' "Strawberry Fields Forever" and progressive rock, BLACK SABBATH used Mellotrons on at least four mid-1970s albums, notably to simulate a string section on their 1972 hit "Changes". More recently, the strange magnetic-tape keyboards have been utilized by adventurous Scandinavian bands, including ENSLAVED, SHINING, and OPETH.
As OPETH's Per Wiberg explains his band's use of the "spooky" Mellotron sounds: "Any instrument can be a metal instrument, it depends on the attitude you have when you're playing."
For more information on "Mellodrama: The Mellotron Movie", to view the official trailer, or to order DVDs, visit www.mellodramadvd.com.

SLAYER - \"Hold On To Your Tickets\"
SLAYER have issued the following brief update:
"While Tom is at rest working on his recovery, the Slayer team is working hard to reschedule all postponed shows!
For all your fans with tickets to the American Carnage, Canadian Carnage, and UK/EU shows: Hold on to your tickets, more information will be coming your way!
Thanks for all of your support."
As previously reported, "Tom gave various medical treatments more than a fair shot," said Slayer's manager Rick Sales, "but they just haven't handled the problem, so he's biting the bullet and is scheduled for back surgery at the end of this month."
This difficult decision made by the band's bassist/vocalist Tom Araya means the cancellation of Slayer's immediate tour plans that include the American and Canadian Carnage Tour dates that were set to kick off on January 18, as well as the band's UK/European tour scheduled for March and April. Booking agents for both Slayer and MEGADETH are already hard at work to see if these dates can be rescheduled, so those holding tickets are asked to sit tight as more info will be announced as progress is made.
The headbanging Araya, known for aggressively swinging his long mane of hair while performing, began experiencing back problems while on the band's Australian/New Zealand/Japanese tour last October. In spite of his rapidly increasing pain and discomfort, he carried on with the tour, but immediately upon returning home saw an orthopedic specialist who diagnosed a Cervical Radiculopathy. The rocker initially did not want to take the major surgery route, so the specialist recommended a series of minimally-invasive procedures. While those procedures have resulted in some improvement, Araya continues to deal with intermittent bouts of severe pain, numbness and muscle spasms. The surgical procedure that Araya will undergo, called an Anterior Cervical Discectomy with Fusion, is a relatively routine practice and the recovery rate is excellent.
Sales added, "As unfortunate as this is for so many people - the Megadeth and TESTAMENT camps, the concerts' promoters, and, of course, the fans - Tom's health is the number one priority, and this has to happen."

AMORAL Parts Ways With Guitarist, Announces Replacement
Finnish metallers AMORAL have parted ways with guitarist Silver Ots.
Commented the group in a statement: "For the past months it has been unclear whether or not Silver would continue in the band, and now he has made up his mind to leave. Apparently he didn't feel motivated enough to be part of AMORAL anymore, as well as wanting to concentrate on other things in life.
"As bothersome as it is to lose a bandmember, we've been working with since the very beginning, we're not going to let this affect our own enthusiasm and the future of AMORAL. Valtteri Hirvonen will be our 'permanent stand-in guitarist' for the time being, so he'll be joining us on gigs and helping out with the songwriting process (he did a GREAT job on the European tour by the way, so we're more than happy to have the guy with us)."
Added Silver in a statement: "I would like to thank the guys for dedication and determination throughout the years and making things happen. I treasure the experiences and miles travelled. I hope nothing but the best for AMORAL and raise my thumbs up to Valtteri Hirvonen for stepping up to the challenge!"

SIGH: \'Prelude To The Oracle\' Video Released
"Prelude To The Oracle", the new video from the Japanese extreme-metal group SIGH, can be viewed at RevolverMag.com. The clip was directed by David Hall, who states about the video, "The first things [vocalist-saxophonist] Dr. Mikannibal sent me were a lyric sheet and the album artwork. Based on the artwork, lyrics, and music I came up with the concept. Once we — Dr. Mikannibal, [frontman] Mirai [Kawasima] and myself — were in Baltimore, we met in person and talked about the concept.
"I don't know if the video directly reflects the lyrical content, but I hope that the intensity of the video reflects the intensity of the lyrics: The words are very dark and paint an apocalyptic picture of great suffering, and communal pain. I would have loved to create a huge wasteland full of dead bodies, but we didn't have the budget for that. Instead we get a small crowd of metalheads giving their all, shouting the chorus 'Death after Death!' so I think in some ways it's very fitting. Also, the way Mirai is addressing the camera directly gives his performance something of an oratorical air, like he's warning us about the end of the world..."

He adds, "We're doing three shows in Finland in April, but other than that we're just going to be working really hard, so there won't be much happening until we're done with the record."

Swedish modern metallers SONIC SYNDICATE have entered Bohus Sound studios in Kungälv, Sweden with producer Toby Wright (KORN, SLAYER, MÖTLEY CRÜE, KISS, FEAR FACTORY, IN FLAMES, STONE SOUR, OZZY OSBOURNE) to begin recording their new album for a tentative May release via Nuclear Blast Records.
Commented the band's latest addition, British singer Nathan James Biggs (formerly of THE HOLLOW EARTH THEORY): "I've been a fan of Toby's work for years. I grew up listening to KORN, SEVENDUST, SLAYER and TAPROOT, and now I am sat next to this dude and he is doing our new album! This is the shit dreams are made of!" | 0

WEEDEATER\'s DIXIE DAVE Shoots Himself In The Foot
North Carolina's sludge pillagers WEEDEATER have been forced to postpone the recording sessions for their new album after the band's vocalist/bassist, "Dixie" Dave Collins, "shot his big toe off whilst cleaning his favorite shotgun" this past weekend, according to a posting on the group's MySpace page. Collins states, "It wasn't my intention to shoot off my big toe. This really fucking sucks and the pain is unbearable."
Collins' doctors have advised that he is to be bedridden for the next few weeks during his recovery. As a result, WEEDEATER's previously announced recording session with producer Steve Albini (NIRVANA, NEUROSIS, PIXIES) at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago, Illinois "will now have to be postponed until after the March/April 'nine-toe' tour," according to the band.
