THE KINDRED Stream 'Heritage' Track Online

Ottawa, Canada's progressive rock sextet THE KINDRED (formerly known as TODAY I CAUGHT THE PLAGUE) will release their debut Sumerian Records full-length entitled, Life In Lucidity, on February 25th. They will also embark on a North American tour alongside BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME in February/March. The album track 'Heritage' can now be streamed below.

Vocalist David Journeaux elaborates on the meaning of the song's lyrics: "The song 'Heritage' refers to the idea of building upon the knowledge of predecessors, by way of fully understanding how they came to acquire such knowledge and then applying our own thoughts and ideas to them. It seeks to explain the power of using thousands of years of well thought out concepts and theories, built upon generation after generation, as a base for further thought exploration, rather than building ideas in already existing fields either completely from scratch or with limited subject knowledge. The idea is that whereas the latter approach may produce some interesting results, it would seem that the former offers more possibility of significantly advancing our levels of understanding, as issues that may arise, either known or unknown to us in our own secluded thought development of a particular subject may very well have been addressed and solved in the collective history of that subject’s study. Therefore, having an understanding of a subject’s full course of development keeps us from spending our time reaching already established conclusions, and allows us to focus on unique thoughts to hopefully advance the field, or create new ones."
Life In Lucidity tracklisting:

‘Wolvish’
‘Heritage’
‘Everbound’
‘An Evolution Of Thought’
‘Decades’
‘Millennia’
‘A Grand Debate’
‘Seekers & Servants’
‘Dreambender’
‘Like A Long Life’
‘Cimmerian Dusk’ (bonus track)

‘Heritage’:
David Journeaux previously stated: “The album title, Life In Lucidity, relates to the concept of life being nothing more than a very lucid dream, wherein if you were to wake from it you may either wake in to another dream or in to true reality. It also toys with the notion that if you can realize you are dreaming within this world you can gain complete control over everything that happens within it; complete responsibility for the path your life takes. We are incredibly excited to get this album out to the public and to take the songs to stages across the globe. Being able to start the process with Between The Buried And Me is a bit of a dream-manifestation in itself, as a number of us have been big fans of the band for many years, and have always named them an act with whom we would love to tour one day."

JUDAS PRIEST To Release New Album In 2014

British metal gods JUDAS PRIEST have checked in with the following brief year-end message: "We wish all of our fans a great Christmas and a very metal New Year! We will be releasing a new album sometime in 2014 so stay tuned!"
In August Priest singer Rob Halford spoke with Gary Graff from Billboard about the band's new album and follow-up to 2008's concept piece Nostradamus.

"The writing process is complete," he says. "Now it's the painstaking work of making sure that you get every single note, every single nuance of the vocal, every tiny aspect...right. We're still tracking (instruments). It's just a very laborious but enjoyable part of making the record."
Priest is producing the album itself at the moment, but Halford notes that "there's always a possibility somebody might come in to overview some of the things we're doing."

Halford describes the project's sound as "hard. It's heavy. It's something we think our Priest fans will be thrilled with. We know we have a reputation to maintain, and we know we have to deliver something really strong and solid. The album is going to be full of all the great things you love about Judas Priest -- I don't think I can say anything more than that without being hung, drawn and quartered."

Read more at Billboard.
Judas Priest re taking part in the Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy Camp which runs February 27 - March 2 at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. Serving as counselors will be BLACK LABEL SOCIETY mainman Zakk Wylde (ex-OZZY OSBOURNE), embattled QUEENSRŸCHE singer Geoff Tate, LITA FORD, Rudy Sarzo (ANIMETAL USA, DIO’S DISCIPLES, ex-OZZY OSBOURNE, WHITESNAKE, QUIET RIOT, DIO, BLUE ÖYSTER CULT), Vinny Appice (DIO, BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL) and Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osbourne).

Rob Halford (vocals), Ian Hill (bass), Richie Faulkner (guitair) and Scott Travis (drums) will be taking part in the Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy Camp. Guitarist Glenn Tipton will be busy mixing Priest's next album and won't be able to attend.

DARK FOREST - The Awakening Album Details Revealed

UK-based traditional metallers DARK FOREST are set to return with their third long-player, The Awakening. The album has been slated for release in Europe on February 28th, and in North America on March 11th via Cruz Del Sur Music on CD, LP and digital.

In 2012 Dark Forest recruited the outstanding vocalist Josh Winnard as their new front man and shortly afterwards also gained the incredible talents of guitarist Pat Jenkins. With this new lineup, the band immediately began writing fresh material and entered the recording studio in June 2 to produce The Awakening.
The Awakening tracklisting:

'The Awakening'
'Sacred Signs'
'Penda's Fen'
'Turning Of The Tide'
'Rise Like Lions'
'Immortal Remains'
'Secret Commonwealth'
'The Last Season'
'Sons Of England'

The album is recorded in 444hz instead of the standardized 440hz tuning. The decision was based by studying the lost "Solfeggio frequencies", original sound frequencies which were apparently used in Ancient Gregorian Chants and were believed to impart "spiritual blessings when sung in harmony" and also by studying the nefarious origins of 440hz. Tuning to 444hz corresponds to a "C" of 528hz on the Solfeggio Frequency Scale, the exact frequency used by genetic biochemists to repair broken DNA. This frequency is also believed to encourage "Transformation and Miracles."

A press release describes the album: “Dark Forest's innate sense of melody remains intact on The Awakening, as well as the band's trademarked epic twin-guitar dueling, but this time the album is permeated by a general sense of oppression and sorrow and sounds much more reflective than their previous works. Not by coincidence, The Awakening opens with the ending lines of Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem The Mask Of Anarchy and ends with the anthem ‘Sons Of England’. The awakening must be both spiritual and intellectual and through the rediscovery of our roots and a connection to nature, must lead all humanity to remember the truth - which we are infinite consciousness and we are one. This is the realization that will defeat the global control system of the elite and set humanity free.”

KISKE On Possibility Of HELLOWEEN Reunion: 'If They Give Me 2 Million Euros, I'd Be Stupid Not To Do It'

David E. Gehlke of DeadRhetoric.com recently conducted an interview with former HELLOWEEN vocalist Michael Kiske. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

DeadRhetoric.com: There's been some talk lately of a potential reunion between you and the HELLOWEEN guys, so I wanted to get your thoughts. Any truth to these rumors?

Kiske: No. That's something the HELLOWEEN guys are bringing up. They have that in their head for whatever reason… I don't know why. They have their own singer [Andi Deris]. I wouldn't do that. I'm up for peace, up for talking everything out and getting everything out of our systems. I met up with [HELLOWEEN guitarist Michael] Weikath a couple of weeks ago in Sweden. He was extremely nice and friendly. It was clear they have changed their mood. They've changed their attitude toward me. They really did me a lot of wrong over the years. I don't want to pass the blame here, but they've accused me of doing things that they know very well are not right. They needed some stuff to convince the old fans that it's good I'm not there anymore, and they went way too far. One of the things that I was really pissed about was this "musical direction" talk, as if I would be the person to tell anyone what kind of music he should do. Everyone who knows me — anyone who really knows me — knows my attitude is totally different. I would always say, "Do what you believe in. Whatever song is your song, write it, go play it." I would never be the person to tell anyone in HELLOWEEN the direction we were supposed to go. That was so ridiculous, to blame me for the things that came up. Yes, I was responsible for my own songs, but it was always something the band made work… or not.

DeadRhetoric.com: I talked to Weiki in person when they were here in the States in September and we talked about "Chameleon", and how the band was trying to be like QUEEN…

Kiske: I don't think we were a band anymore in those days. We didn't try anything on "Chameleon"; there were three songwriters trying to make a solo record. We were not functioning as a band anymore. Totally dysfunctional. But about this reunion thing, I'm in UNISONIC now. I don't know how they have suddenly changed their tone and why I should be there for a reunion tour and all. Like I said, I'm fine with making peace, but you can't undo the past. I'm a typical person. I can easily forgive, but I never forget. If someone betrays me, I tell them, "Okay, I forgive you. Go in peace. I don't trust you anymore. You showed me who you are. I'm not saying you can't change, but you have to do a lot to convince me you have changed."

DeadRhetoric.com: Not even for instance, UNISONIC and HELLOWEEN are at a festival and you're asked to do "I Want Out". Nothing like that?

Kiske: I can do that with UNISONIC. For the fans who are in love with the records of those times, like the "Keeper" records, I understand they have hopes and think it would be a cool thing. I don't think they could give me the amount of money, just for business reasons to say yes. My heart is just not there. If they give me 2 million euros, I'd be stupid not to do it, but I know they'd never do it. [laughs] This will never be an option. For the fans, you can do a lot, but for me, it would be very difficult to be on a stage and to sing among people who are not my friends, people who I have such a negative past with and feel so betrayed by. My voice would probably be gone.

DeadRhetoric.com: But your meeting with Weiki went well, though, right?

Kiske: Oh yeah, it went good. I don't think it was…he was just trying to get me on his side. Trying to make me feel good and not about clearing anything up. I just think they're up to something and probably in terms of their career it would be a nice move.

DeadRhetoric.com: Their 30th anniversary is next year.

Kiske: The thing is, all those things aside, there's another thing that I find weird when it comes to this. I have been connected with this name "HELLOWEEN" not completely for seven years, it was under seven years, and the "Keeper" records have been the most successful, but after that, they have a new singer and he's been in the band for 20 years now. If you look at it, both of those bands — the HELLOWEEN of the "Keeper" era and the new one, they're very different. They sound very different. Not only because of the singer, they sound different in many ways, and in my ears, I don't have anything to do with it anymore, but that's just me. The people who come to their concerts nowadays, I'm pretty sure it's because of the records they have done afterward, with their new singer, and they want to hear that guy, and I don't give that to myself. I don't want to be onstage singing material for people who want to hear Andi. When I'm on tour with UNISONIC, they want to hear me, playing together with Kai [Hansen], and doing "I Want Out" and "March Of Time", and it works.

FALLEN FATE To Release 'Into The Black' In January

North East England's purveyors of modern metal FALLEN FATE will release their sophomore album, "Into The Black", on January 30, 2014. The follow-up to 2011's "The Virus Has Spread" was recorded, in part, in Stymphalian Productions in York with producer James Stephenson and was finished in vocalist Lee Skinner's home studio.

"Into The Black" retains FALLEN FATE's signature punishing heaviness but it's also apparent that the band has moved on musically since "The Virus Has Spread".

Comments Lee Skinner: "Dark, expressive and heavy…The sound and feel of FALLEN FATE has changed quite a bit since the release of 'The Virus Has Spread'. The band has progressed and developed a more solid metal sound while maintaining a unique mix of speed and heaviness in the music.

"Based on a horror movie theme around a young girl called Vespa, the concept of 'Into The Black' plays a big part in how the album sounds and how it is visually portrayed through the artwork and upcoming videos. It contributed to the evolving sound of the band as we introduced more keyboards and experimental sounds into the mix, giving it a different dark feel and sound."

Talking further about the concept of the album, Skinner elaborates: "She [Vespa] chose a life without faith and over time became possessed by a demon. The demon slowly took over her body and ultimately lead her to kill herself and her family. The drive behind the concept is to empower the listener to decide whether she was possessed by the Devil, as she has no saviour in her life, or if she was possessed by God, punishing her for her lack of faith."

The artwork for "Into The Black" was designed by both photographer Ian Cameron and Skinner through his own Black Venom Designs.

"Into The Black" track listing:

01. The Rise (intro)02. Blackened Within03. Until The Final Hour04. Into The Black05. Possession06. I Welcome The Dead07. Rituals08. Last Rites09. The Demise (intro)10. Vespa

Former METALLICA Bassist JASON NEWSTED Doesn't Believe In Re-Recording Classic Albums

Greg Prato of Songfacts recently conducted an interview with former METALLICA, VOIVOD and FLOTSAM AND JETSAM bassist and current NEWSTED frontman Jason Newsted. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Songfacts: One of my favorite songs from when you were a member of METALLICA was "Blackened", which is a song that you co-wrote. What do you remember about your contribution to that song, as far as writing it?

Jason: That was a very special time in my life. This was when James [Hetfield] and I were first becoming friends. He was someone I looked up to greatly before I joined the band — we all did. Anybody in any other bands, even the guys in the bands around us, even EXODUS and VIO-LENCE, we all looked up to James. He was just a special gifted person, still is. So we were getting to be friends and we'd stay over at each other's house or apartments, and we'd take care of each other's animals when we went on vacations and these kind of things, got to be pals. We were in my one-bedroom apartment. I had my little four-track Tascam set up in the corner of the bedroom, and we were jamming on our guitars, just playing through some riffs. And I played that [vocalizes the riff - play the clip to hear it] That "Blackened" riff, and he goes, "Dude, what is that?" Because it was really pretty crazy. The original thing is a very fast alternating thing. Man, it's pretty tricky, actually. I mean, the one that ended up on the record is pretty tricky, too, but the original one is really tricky. He picked up on that and we recorded that bit. And he goes, "Let's build it to this, and build it to this." It was a moment. I was actually composing a song with James from METALLICA and he was approving my riffs and saying, "This is going to be a METALLICA song." That was a big, big moment for me. We had already been on tour together, and so I had a giant "Damage Inc." tour poster on my bedroom wall right above my little station where I had my speakers and my little four-track and the two or three guitars in my collection. And there we were, I could paint that picture for you very plainly. It was a very, very big moment for me, because I was getting approved from The Man to have my first chance on having one of my compositions on a METALLICA record. So that was a very special time.

Songfacts: This year is the 25th anniversary of the release of the "…Justice For All" album. I'm sure a lot of fans were hoping, that METALLICA was going to put out the album again as a reissue and bring up the bass. Would you like to see that happen as a possible reissue?

Jason: It's their band and if they decide to do that, that's all good with me. You know, over time, there's been so much hubbub over this thing and people make so much out of it, but whatever it is that they make out of the blend of the whole thing, to me the album is perfect. "Kill 'Em All" isn't perfect, but it's perfect. And "Van Halen I" isn't perfect, but it's perfect. "...And Justice For All" isn't perfect, but it's perfect. Because it captured that time for those people. And going back and changing things and doing "the Sharon Osbourne thing" [replacing previous musicians' recordings with newer ones, as evidenced a few years ago with reissues of Ozzy's "Blizzard Of Ozz" and "Diary Of A Madman"], going back and re-recording albums that were already classics, I'm just not sure about all that stuff. So if they decide to do a remaster and they bring up the bass frequencies or the low-end frequencies and all that, right on, man. Send me a copy and I'll blast it just like anybody else, just like a fan of METALLICA. But for what it is, it does just fine. It still sells a lot of copies every day and I'm pretty happy with the outcome of the whole thing, actually. Considering what I knew about playing bass guitar at that time, I'm not surprised it's as low as it is, really.

Songfacts: I recently interviewed Michael Gilbert from the band FLOTSAM AND JETSAM, and he mentioned that he'd like to work with you again. Would you ever entertain the thought of maybe doing some shows or a new album with FLOTSAM AND JETSAM at some point?

Jason: Well, I wrote a few songs for their new record, "Ugly Noise". I gave them the title for the album and lyrics for the main song and all that kind of stuff. That's all my stuff, so I contributed to the last one. They have actually asked me this week to play on the "No Place For Disgrace" re-recording, and now we're in the same territory of the last question again. I don't believe, really, in that kind of thing, going back and re-recording stuff. It just doesn't seem right. It seems like stepping backwards to me, and I want to move forward. I was up until 5 o'clock this morning working on a new song that Mike Mushok and I have together, and I really think we have something with this one. So I have enough of my own stuff going on and I'm moving forward with new material. So bless them for going back and doing "No Place", and that's all good. But I won't be taking a part in any of that. I'll always be a supporter of FLOTSAM AND JETSAM, but I'm not going to be in their band or anything like that.
