REVENGIA: New Album Update
Swedish metallers REVENGIA entered the studio last year to begin laying down tracks for their as-yet-untitled third album. The band has now issued the following update on the progress of the CD's recording sessions:
"Writing from the studio were we right now are doing some re-amping and vocals.
"As you notice, things are moving slowly. We had our share of trouble during last fall, which led to abandoning the studio facilities we spent many hours building.
"'Back to square one' is an expression so familiar to us, it should be the name of the album (or not...). On the other hand, the results are really good.
"The album will show an updated REVENGIA with some really heavy songs with strong melodies.
"Everybody is contributing [his] outmost to make the best REVENGIA possible.
"We got some vocals to do, then we will shift to mixing mode." | 0

SLAYER Frontman \'Suffering From Vertigo,\' Says Wife
According to a new Facebook post by Sandra Araya, wife of SLAYER bassist/vocalist Tom Araya, Tom "was suffering from vertigo due to extreme dehydration and lack of rest," causing the cancelation of the band's appearance at the Sydney, Australia stop of the Soundwave festival on Sunday, February 27. She adds, "Our doctor is in the process of getting the results on the test that were ran (major time zone difference and being the weekend has held up those results). Hopefully there will be nothing more to add after the results are returned."
The Sydney appearance on Sunday, February 27 would have marked SLAYER's second show on the annual festival tour.

VOMITORY Schlagzeuger Tobias Gustafsson sieht das genauso: "Opus Mortis VIII" "is our eighth album (no shit!) - our eighth Opus of Death. And I dare to say that this is one of the strongest albums we've done, and it most certainly has the most powerful production we've ever had on any album, hands down. For the third time, we worked with Rikard Löfgren in his Leon Music Studios. We raised the bar quite a few notches in the studio - both production-wise and performance-wise, and we couldn't be happier with the result. We are not breaking new death metal ground with this album - that was never Vomitorys mission - but "Opus Mortis VIII" offers diversity and dynamics that you haven't quite heard from Vomitory before. Still, this is a very intense and aggressive album in the true Vomitory tradition - all the essential signature details are there. Once you hear the opening track, "Regorge In The Morgue", you will need no further proof of that!"
"Opus Mortis VIII" erscheint in Europa am 23./26. April 2011 auf Metal Blade Records. Die limitierte Erstauflage kommt als Digipak mit vier exklusiven Bonustracks. Bei diesen vier Stücken handelt es sich um Neuaufnahmen von Songs der ersten beiden VOMITORY-Scheiben!
Tracklist "Opus Mortis VIII":
01. Regorge In The Morgue
02. Bloodstained
03. They Will Burn
04. The Dead Awaken
05. Hate In A Time Of War
06. Torturous Ingenious
07. Forever Damned
08. Shrouded In Darkness
09. Combat Psychosis
10. Requiem For The Fallen
Bonus tracks:
11. Nervegasclouds 2011
12. Raped In Their Own Blood 2011
13. Redemption 2011
14. The Voyage 2011

MIKE PORTNOY: DREAM THEATER Members Are Refusing To Answer My E-Mails And Calls
Ex-DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy says that he "can't see any upcoming releases" from Ytsejam Records, the label imprint which his former band has been using for years to release official bootlegs of live recordings ("Ytsejam" is "Majesty" spelled backwards; MAJESTY was DREAM THEATER's original band name).
Portnoy, who oversaw the creative side of Ytsejam's affairs, was asked by a fan via Mike's official forum whether his departure from DREAM THEATER also means "the end of the publication of the official bootlegs" from the band.
"As this question seems to come up every few weeks, I may as well go on the record," Portnoy replied.
"I have no idea why [DREAM THEATER guitarist John Petrucci] would have said [in a recent interview that] Ytsejam Records wouldn't be affected [by my exit from the group]...
"I was the one that handpicked and decided on every title, compiled the music and videos for the CDs and DVDs and oversaw the artwork and liner notes.
"John's side of the Ytsejam Records production team consisted of dealing with the manufacturing factory and staying on top of the payments and deliveries after I produced all of the titles...
"Being I have the entire 25-year archive of every studio and live recording from 1985 to 2010 in my home, and being the band currently refuse to answer my e-mails or calls, I honestly can't see any upcoming releases...
"It's a shame, too....I was already working on another batch before all of this went down..."
**UPDATE**: Portnoy earlier today (Friday, February 25) posted the following message on his official forum:
"Ugh...I just saw that my post has now ended up on Blabbermouth as well as some DREAM THEATER news sites and Forums and I am now getting ripped to shreds...
"I was simply trying to address a fan question that seems to keep popping up about the future of Ytsejam Records...
"I was not at all 'bad-mouthing' the DREAM THEATER guys, nor was I whining, crying or complaining...and this was surely NOT meant to be some sort of 'press release!!!!'
"I simply wanted to set the record straight here on my personal forum....
"I have always had an open relationship with you fans and never BS'ed or gave the 'politically correct,' sugar-coated answer....I've always tried to be very upfront, open and in direct contact with mine and DREAM THEATER's fan base... Unfortunately, I guess I REALLY need to watch everything I say these days for fear of misinterpretation and I apologize if I cannot address certain areas dealing with DREAM THEATER past or future."
Just days after it was announced that he'd been dismissed as the touring drummer for AVENGED SEVENFOLD, Portnoy revealed that he tried to rejoin DREAM THEATER, and was rebuffed.
Portnoy, who co-founded DREAM THEATER more than 20 years ago, abruptly quit the band last summer while on tour with AVENGED SEVENFOLD.
He played on AVENGED SEVENFOLD's latest album, "Nightmare", following the death of that band's drummer, Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, and toured with them for the entire second half of 2010.
Portnoy recently began laying down tracks on the debut album from the new band featuring SYMPHONY X frontman Russell Allen and guitar virtuoso Mike Orlando (SONIC STOMP). Portnoy is also involved in a separate new project with guitarist Steve Morse (DEEP PURPLE, DIXIE DREGS), multi-instrumentalist Neal Morse (TRANSATLANTIC, SPOCK'S BEARD), bassist Dave LaRue (DIXIE DREGS) and vocalist Casey McPherson (ALPHA REV, ENDOCHINE). That group's debut album is tentatively due later in the year.

ALICE COOPER Says New Album \'Probably\' Won\'t Be Released Before The Fall
During yesterday's (Thursday, April 24) press conference to announce nominees and performers for the third annual Revolver Golden Gods awards, legendary rocker Alice Cooper was asked by VH1 Radio Networks' Dave Basner when Alice's recently recorded album, "Welcome 2 My Nightmare", will be released.
"Well, we have a whole big tour of big outdoor festival shows coming up and I didn’t want to get that confused with that album," Cooper said. "So even though the album's in the can right now ready to go, [producer] Bob's [Ezrin] got to mix it and everything like that. I don't really want it to come out until probably next fall and then we'll be able to do the brand new show with it."
"Welcome 2 My Nightmare" was produced by Bob Ezrin, who also worked on the singer's "Billion Dollar Babies", "School's Out" and "Love It to Death" releases.
"We thought the story was good, but we started talking about 'Welcome To My Nightmare', which I think is our biggest triumph," Cooper told Billboard.com last October. "He mentioned, 'What if Alice had another nightmare?' And we wrote three songs right there. He got really involved in it. Bob is even darker than I am."

OCEANS OF SADNESS Calls It Quits
Belgian progressive metallers OCEANS OF SADNESS have announced plans to disband after 16 years of existence. The band's official statement on the matter reads as follows:
"First of all we want to thank all of you for supporting OCEANS OF SADNESS during these last 15 years.
"Thanks to you we had the chance to do a lot of cool things, much more than we ever dreamed of 15 years ago...
"During these 15 years we've never really tried to be part of any particular scene music-wise and our image has always been the last thing we cared about. Creating our own sound and writing original and inspiring metal has always been our only real goal and we are proud of the road we travelled during the 5 albums we recorded, with 'The Arrogance Of Ignorance' being the last one, released in 2008 on Scarlet Records.
"We are really proud of all our music and we ourselves have always believed that we kept getting better and better at what we wanted to do.
"But now we feel that our story may have been told.... Theoretically we could easily go on for another 15 years... but we won't.
"We feel time has come for us to relax for a while and who knows what happens in the future... I'm pretty sure all of us will continue making music, maybe together, maybe separately, but more important is that we all have the feeling we can now close this chapter of our lives with pride and dignity.
"We're not the kind of guys to close a door and throw away the key forever, not at all... however, we don't have the intention to come back in this shape in a few years either... Music is about creativity and challenging yourself and right now we feel we got stuck in some sort of routine for quite a while now... We lack the energy to record yet another album, again negotiating with labels, just to end up with another deal that only costs us a lot of money, followed by a few shows... We'll see what happens in the future, like with everything in life: nothing is certain...
"On a positive note: To celebrate the end of OCEANS OF SADNESS in style we decided to leave the scene with a blast and do a special last show.
"The date and other details will be released when all is certain.
"Thanks for everything! We hope you will enjoy our music for many years to come!"

SCAR SYMMETRY: New Album Cover Artwork, Concept Unveiled
Swedish progressive melodic death metallers SCAR SYMMETRY will release their new album, "The Unseen Empire", in Europe on April 15 via Nuclear Blast Records.
Commented the band's drummer, Henrik Ohlsson: "'The Unseen Empire' seeks to expose the hidden hand of the elite that pull the strings of mankind in order to fulfill their agenda of global domination. The album concept goes from theories of shadow governments to secret ancient bloodlines and even further into speculations of malevolent influence from metaphysical reptilian-based intelligences. Mankind's only hope to survive seems to be an internal awakening where the influence of the unseen empire that rules in secrecy is washed away from the minds of the masses. They want us to stay within the framework of their agenda, hypnotizing us with things that draw attention but has no value. It's time to step outside the framework and make 'the unseen empire' visible!"

JOURNEY STEVE PERRY Prepping 50 Songs For Upcoming Album
According to The Pulse Of Radio, former JOURNEY frontman Steve Perry says he's written about 50 songs which are in the running for his upcoming solo album. The still-unnamed project will mark his first new album since 1994's "For The Love Of A Strange Medicine" collection. Perry talked to Classic Rock magazine about the new album, saying, "A little over a year-and-a-half ago, I felt I could maybe come back to it. I have been writing. I have about 50 songs, in a little over a year. I never thought I'd do it again, but I decided to open up that room and see what I could find."
He went on to describe the new songs: "Some of it sounds familiar, some of it sounds contemporary, some of it you can't put a label on — and I've never been big on labels anyway."
When pressed to give fans an idea when the album will be released, Perry said: "I'll be honest, I don't really know how to do that. But I can definitely smell a solo project on the horizon. I will be recording some music."

CKY To Release \'B-Sides & Rarities\' In March
CKY will release "B-Sides & Rarities" on March 22 through Mighty Loud Entertainment and Universal/Fontana. The 12-song compilation features a dozen previously unreleased, rare, and long-out-of-print tracks culled from the historic past of a band that truly has done whatever they wanted for 15 years, without compromise.
Commented drummer Jess Margera: "We picked a lot of the songs based on our fans' wishes. For instance, at CKY shows over the years, one of the most shouted-out requests has been 'Shippensburg', which is a song we recorded in 1997 for a skateboarding video. And by far the most requested songs on the Internet over the years have been 'To All of You', the acoustic version and the heavy recording of 'Halfway House'. We wanted to properly mix and master these out-of-print songs and get them back out there and also record some of the stuff people have been asking us to do for over a decade."
The complete track listing features:
01. Afterworld
02. Rio Bravo (radio session)
03. Shippensburg
04. Halfway House
05. Chad's In Hi-Fi
06. Santa's Coming
07. Fat Fuck
08. The Deepest Depths
09. Rio Bravo (Remix)
10. Don't Hold Your Breath (acoustic)
11. Halfway House (original version)
12. To All of You (acoustic)
The album opener, "Afterworld", continues CKY's long affiliation with the "Jackass" crew. The tune is the end credits theme for "Jackass 3D", soon to be released on DVD following its October 15, 2010 theatrical release, and was previously available on the film soundtrack. Margera reflects, "It was cool working with the 'Jackass' dudes again. They asked us to write a song specifically for the 'Jackass 3D' movie which ended up being 'Afterworld'. They liked the song so much they decided to use it for the ending of the film." | 0

BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME: New Album Details Revealed
Raleigh, North Carolina-based progressive rock/cutting-edge metal band BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME will release its new album, "The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues", on April 12 via Metal Blade Records. The three-song, 30-minute tour de force was recorded at Canada's Metalworks Studios and Rattlebox Studios and helmed by the Grammy award–winning producer David Bottrill (TOOL, MUSE, KING CRIMSON, DREAM THEATER).
"The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues" represents BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME's musical and conceptual masterwork; the record showcases both the quintet's vivid execution and ambitious vision. The otherworldly conceptual thread linking each of the songs is mobilized around two human characters that live in different planes of existence and are separated by millions of light years, each confronted with similar personal issues. Subsequently, both characters make decisions that will change their lives, and perhaps the course of the universe, forever. Musically, the release presents aura-rich atmospheres rife with roaring volumes, corrugated rhythms and trance-inducing intricacies. Cerebral and visceral, soft and heavy, melodic and abrasive, tender and brutal, familiar and strange and taut yet sprawling and epic, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME has crafted a sound that is musically sophisticated yet primal and a disc where every new passage leads to the culmination of an epic adventure.
"The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues" track listing:
01. Specular Reflection
02. Augment of Rebirth
03. Lunar Wilderness
"The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues" cover art can be viewed below.
A special landing page for the release has been designed and hosts a six-minute edit of the new BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME song "Specular Reflection". The hub, which also allows fans to pre-order "The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues" is now live at this location.

LEPROUS is a young five-piece band (ages range from 19 to 25 years) hailing from the metal town of Notodden, Norway, also home to such bands as EMPEROR, ZYKLON, IHSAHN, PECCATUM, etc. Originally founded in 2001, they've gone through a few lineup changes and now consist of Einar Solberg (synth/vocals), Tor Oddmund Suhrke (guitar), Rein Blomquist (bass, also in ABOVE SYMMETRY), Øystein Landsverk (guitar) and Tobias Ørnes Andersen (drums).
The music of LEPROUS is not easy to classify. Various genres are included, from progressive rock, to jazz, to pure metal and the vocals alternate between clean singing and growling, adding heaviness to the music. Instead of drawing parallels to this or that, bands such as OPETH, KING CRIMSON, PORCUPINE TREE, THE MARS VOLTA, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and SHINING (Norway) should be regarded more as songwriting influences than as comparisons. It's all in the eye (or in this case, the ear) of the beholder…
LEPROUS has already made itself visible on the Norwegian prog and metal scene by releasing the self-financed full length demo CD "Aeolia" in 2007 and by making it to the finals of the Norwegian Rock Championship twice. In May of 2009, LEPROUS released its first real album, "Tall Poppy Syndrome", via American label Sensory Records and that effort quickly became somewhat of an underground cult release, heralded as the best 2009 prog metal CD by many media people.
Backed by new management/booking agency Intromental Worldwide, LEPROUS spent 2009/2010 promoting the album's release with numerous shows throughout Scandinavia, Europe and USA, as well as finally a main support slot for the fall 2010 European tour of Swedish symphonic/orchestral metal band THERION, taking them through no less than 17 countries in 30 days.
In addition to performing with their own band, the members of LEPROUS are currently also acting as the session/live band of solo artist IHSAHN, also known as the front figure of the legendary black metal band EMPEROR.
LEPROUS is currently busy with studio work for its upcoming, as-yet-untitled new album, to be released after the summer via InsideOutMusic. | 0

THE MONOLITH DEATHCULT: New Song Posted Online
"Aslimu!!! - All Slain Those Who Brought Down Our Highly Respected Symbols To The Lower Status Of The Barren Earth", a brand new song from Dutch extreme metallers THE MONOLITH DEATHCULT, can be streamed using the player below.
Commented guitarist/vocalist Michiel Dekker: "The lyrical theme of this track is mainly based on Lawrence Wright's book 'The Looming Tower'. Besides that I was inspired by the Dua-e-Sanam-e-Quraish curse and the events around the Muslim Brotherhood.
"This is a rare track which we recorded to let the people know what we are doing.
"Writing a THE MONOLITH DEATHCULT song costs a lot of time, because of all the lyrical research and musical fine-tuning. There is a huge change that the final album track will be totally different from this one, but that is how we work.
"The lyrics of this song were written during the summer/autumn of 2010 and vocals were recorded in the X-mass holiday of the same year. To our surprise, the subject became extremely relevant because of the turmoil in the Middle East region. Everybody who watched the speech of the Libyan Bedouin tent revolutionary on Al-Jazeera will understand that we MUST write a track about Muammar Gaddafi." | 0

02. Surviving Self Resentment
03. Alone In A Crowd
04. Overrated
05. Social Woes

07. Envy The Dead
08. Perversion
09. Nothing to Live For
10. High On Rejection

DOOGIE WHITE To Guest On KRUK Album
Scottish rock singer Doogie White (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, RAINBOW, CORNERSTONE, TANK) makes a guest appearance on the second studio album from Polish hard rockers KRUK, due on June 6 via Metal Mind Productions. White contributes his vocals to a track called "In Reverie".
KRUK members Piotrek Brzychcy, Tomek Wisniewski and Krzysztof Walczyk first met White in 2005 when they shared the stage with YNGWIE MALMSTEEN in Katowice. "We were extremely happy that, after the gig, we could give each other high five, that we could make some commemorative photos," Piotrek says. "Now [Doogie] sings in our song, he sings our lyrics... on our album. It's hard to believe!"
He adds, "I remember one of my first conversations with Krzysiek Walczyk, when we expressed our utmost delight over RAINBOW's 'Strangers in Us All'. It was back when we were just starting to form KRUK and we had never dreamed that we would ever have the honor of cooperating with Doogie White. We adored White for having set new standards in the PURPLE-RAINBOW family with the way he sang with Blackmore.
"What he recorded for 'In Reverie' is to our utmost satisfaction because you can hear passion and joy in every single note. I don't think there's a more happy band today in the entire universe than us!"

Like its predecessors, the album was mixed by Mikko Karmila. Its cover artwork shows Travis Smith's magnificent interpretation of the mythological birth of the world from a goldeneye's egg.

NINE INCH NAILS TRENT REZNOR Wins Academy Award For \'The Social Network\'
NINE INCH NAILS main man Trent Reznor and collaborator Atticus Ross were honored in the "Best Original Score" category at the 83rd annual Academy Awards on Sunday (February 27) for their work on "The Social Network".
"Wow. Is this really happening?" Reznor asked during his acceptance speech. "When we finished work on 'The Social Network', we were very proud of our work and happy to just be involved in this film, and to be standing up here in this company is humbling and flattering beyond words."
Once backstage, Reznor added, "A side of my music with NINE INCH NAILS was going instrumental so it was not a huge leap or stretch to try [scoring a movie]. The biggest challenge was working with a picture. [Director] David Fincher knew exactly what he wanted. It was one of the best experiences of my life from start to finish.
Reznor added, "[Inception] composer, Hans Zimmer, who I've been battling at awards shows all year, told me, 'In a lot of ways, I hope you win because it's helped open up the field a bit for texture of what film scores can be.' "
Reznor and Ross's score for "The Social Network" won a Golden Globe award last month.
Reznor told Movieline.com that he did not see an Oscar nomination as a certainty, saying, "We didn't go into this project with any expectations of any kind of award recognition. The weight of the Oscar — we certainly didn't think that we were guaranteed credit. We had our fingers crossed but it was still a very nervous morning."
Reznor added that when he was a kid growing up with dreams of being a musician, the thought of being nominated for an Academy Award never occurred to him. He explained, "In fact that never crossed my mind until a few months ago when the film came out. The whole experience of working on the film — it was unexpected to have that opportunity . . . It feels great to think that the Academy recognized it because it is not a traditional score. I'm very flattered that they've taken notice of it. It means a lot to me."
"The Social Network" received a total of eight nods, including "Best Picture", "Best Director", "Best Actor" and "Best Adapted Screenplay".
Reznor and Ross's next film score is for "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", also from "The Social Network" director David Fincher.

CHIMAIRA Guitarist Officially Joins SIX FEET UNDER
Florida death metallers SIX FEET UNDER have issued the following update:
"Just wanted to give you a SIX FEET UNDER band update and let you all know that we would like to announce our good friend Rob Arnold [CHIMAIRA] will be joining SIX FEET UNDER as second rhythm guitarist for upcoming touring duties, as well as collaborating on the new CD. "
Commented SIX FEET UNDER vocalist Chris Barnes: "I couldn't be happier about the new songs and lineup!
"Rob and myself have been collaborating on new songs along with the band's new drummer, Kevin Talley [DAATH, MISERY INDEX, CHIMAIRA], for the past few months.
"We are all feeling really excited about the band's future, and the raw intensity of the songs that we have created together so far. This is the heaviest most exciting material that I've worked on since 'The Bleeding' [CANNIBAL CORPSE's 1994 album], and I'm stoked that Rob will be helping out creating this CD with us! We've all known each other for a while and we're really looking forward to continue writing the new CD and future tours. We are committed to taking SIX FEET UNDER to the next level of brutality!"
Added Arnold: "It's been an amazing honor and opportunity to have been called upon by one of my biggest idols, Chris Barnes!!
"SIX FEET UNDER and the Barnes-era CANNIBAL [CORPSE] stuff had enormous effects on me as a young musician, and still do to this day.
"In 1996, I was a kid in the front row screaming my head off to 'Lycanthropy' and 'Torn to the Bone'... And now here I am, being asked to play the songs on stage with the band! Dreams do come true!!! And the stuff we've been writing absolutely RIPS! Watch out!!"
