TROLLFEST To Enter Studio Tomorrow
 Norwegian "ompa-party-trollish" metallers TROLLFEST, featuring members of PANTHEON I and SARKOM, will enter the studio tomorrow (Sunday, January 10) to begin recording their fourth full-length CD for a spring/summer release. SHINING Frontman Guests On New GRAVDAL Album
 SHINING frontman Niklas "Kvarforth" Olsson has recorded vocals for a track on the forthcoming second album from Norwegian black metallers GRAVDAL, "Torturmantra". The song, entitled "Mishandlet", was laid down at the Erebus Odora studios in Sweden with producer Peter Bjärgö.

SLAYER Cancels Tour Plans; TOM ARAYA Scheduled For Back Surgery
 California thrash metal legends SLAYER have been forced to cancel all of their immediate tour plans — including the American and Canadian Carnage tour dates with MEGADETH and TESTAMENT that were set to kick off on January 18, as well as the band's European headline tour scheduled for March and April.
SLAYER bassist/vocalist Araya, known for aggressively swinging his long mane of hair while performing, began experiencing back problems while on the band's Australian/New Zealand/Japanese tour last October. In spite of his rapidly increasing pain and discomfort, he carried on with the tour, but immediately upon returning home saw an orthopedic specialist who diagnosed a cervical radiculopathy. The rocker initially did not want to take the major surgery route, so the specialist recommended a series of minimally-invasive procedures. While those procedures have resulted in some improvement, Araya continues to deal with intermittent bouts of severe pain, numbness and muscle spasms.
"Tom gave various medical treatments more than a fair shot," said SLAYER's manager Rick Sales, "but they just haven't handled the problem, so he's biting the bullet and is scheduled for back surgery at the end of this month."
The surgical procedure that Araya will undergo, called an anterior cervical discectomy with fusion, is a relatively routine practice and the recovery rate is excellent.
Booking agents for both SLAYER and MEGADETH are already hard at work rescheduling tour dates; tickets already purchased for all shows will be honored at the rescheduled dates.
Sales added, "As unfortunate as this is for so many people — the MEGADETH and TESTAMENT camps, the concerts' promoters, and, of course, the fans — Tom's health is the number one priority, and this has to happen."

EXCALION: New Song Available For Streaming
 "Enter A Life", a brand new song from Finnish symphonic power metallers EXCALION, is available for streaming on the band's MySpace page. The track comes off the group's third album, "High Time", which is scheduled for release on January 29 via Limb Music. The follow-up to 2007's "Waterlines" was recorded at Watercastle studio in Jyväskylä, Finland. The CD was produced by EXCALION and Arttu Sarvanne and was engineered and mixed by Arttu Sarvanne. The cover artwork was created by Fernando R. Garcia and can be viewed below.

KORN Readying \'Funky, Heavy, Melodic\' New Album
 Revolver magazine recently spoke with KORN frontman Jonathan Davis and bassist Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu about the band's forthcoming ninth album, which is said to be a return to the group's earlier sound.
"We experimented with a lot of cool stuff on our last two records [2005's 'See You On The Other Side' and 2007's untitled effort], but we didn't want to do another record like that," Davis explained. "So we said, 'Let's strip it back again. Let's do this as a four-piece and make it real raw like the old stuff."
KORN worked on the new CD with producer Ross Robinson, who helmed the band's first two albums, 1994's "Korn" and 1996's "Life is Peachy".
"We figured if we're gonna go back [to the early KORN sound], we should do it with Ross," said Fieldy. "And it was great. Even though we hadn't seen him in years, it felt just like old times."
He added, "We made sure that every song we were working on had everything that represents the integrity that you hear on [KORN's 1994 debut]. There's on faster, really heavy song that's pretty different for us, but the rest is a combination of everything we were in '93. It's funky; it's heavy; it's melodic. It's everything, man. It's KORN."
KORN's forthcoming effort was tracked last October at the band's studio. "We recorded everything on tape, just like we did in the old days," said Davis. "And we didn't stack four or five vocal parts like I usually do. I'm singing one part for every song, which was scary. It's just me and the microphone, and you can really hear the emotion."
As part of Robinson's tireless quest to wring every last bit of emotion from his artists, he encouraged Davis to revisit past traumas to fuel his performance. "He used any kind of ammunition he had to get me into that headspace where I felt like I wanted to scream and run away," Davis said. "I basically went fucking crazy making this record. When I was done, I was emotionally gone and in tears and everything. And the memories don't just go away. I'd brew on 'em all day. It was rough."
KORN's ninth studio album is now being mixed for a June release.
The band has yet to sign a new record deal, after releasing its last two efforts through Virgin.
KORN is also rumored to be one of the headliners for this summer's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival.

Finland\'s ROCK Releases Another Song
 ROCK, the Finnish band featuring members of TWILIGHTNING, LULLACRY and MALPRACTICE, has posted a song entitled "Dance (Before The Night Is Over)" on the group's MySpace page. This track was apparently the first song ever composed by the project.
ROCK's debut album is "99.9% completed" and "we could not be more satisfied with the results," says the band.

THROES OF DAWN: New Album Details Revealed
 Long-running Finnish "dark metal" band THROES OF DAWN will release its fifth album, "The Great Fleet of Echoes", via Firebox Records during the Finnish Metal Expo on February 19. The CD will be made available as both a digiback CD and a limited double LP with 24-bit mastering. The double LP will include two bonus songs.

 German power metallers PRIMAL FEAR have issued the following update:

KEEP OF KALESSIN Performs On Norwegian TV, Qualifies For \'Melodi Grand Prix\' Grand Final
 Norwegian extreme metal veterans KEEP OF KALESSIN are competing in the national Eurovision Song Contest called "Melodi Grand Prix". The band took first place in the first semifinal that aired earlier tonight (Friday, January 8) on NRK1 in Norway. The top two artists chosen by viewers via SMS — including KEEP OF KALESSIN — will take part in the grand final held at the Spektrum, Oslo on February 6. The third- and fourth-place artists will get another new chance to compete in a new TV show called "The Last Chance" where the top 2 artists will also go the final.

ABRUPTUM\'s IT Working On Book About His Life
 IT (a.k.a. Tony Särkkä), the founder of the long-running Swedish black metal band ABRUPTUM, has issued the following update:
"My final contribution to this 'non-extraordinary reality' will be a book about my life. For all these years I have chosen to stay silent, out of the 'spotlights' and now that I finally will vanish into shadows eternally; the time has come to let you know the truth.
"You will hardly find any material out there coming straight from my mind, as I refused interviews and contact with the 'outside.' Thus reading about me in books, on the Net, magazines or when watching various documentaries; I hope you kept in mind that not much of the information given has had any valid or real essence. There has always been so many distractions, falseness, lies, distortions to whom I have been and what I've done that the time has finally come to set things straight once and for all.
"As always, I work in my own pace and there is no deadline to this work, but material is been gathered in heaps. Also note that this book will hardly focus on my musical career, but my entire life.
"There is a time when even legends turn into myths..."

AC/DC: Bern Concert Sells Out Within Minutes
 World Radio Switzerland reports that all 45,000 tickets for the much-anticipated concert by veteran rockers AC/DC in Bern, Switzerland this summer were snapped up in just 12 minutes.
The concert will take place in the Stade de Suisse on June 8.
Last time the group performed in Switzerland was at Zurich's Hallenstadion last April. The 13,000 tickets for that gig were gone in under half an hour.

 California tech-death masters DECREPIT BIRTH have entered Sharkbite Studios (MACHINE HEAD, EXODUS) in Oakland with producer Zack Ohren (ALL SHALL PERISH, SUFFOCATION, IMMOLATION) to begin recording their third album, "Polarity".
Commented guitarist Matt Sotelo: "We began recording the new album on Thursday.
"We are happy to say that everything is going very smoothly!
"This is an awesome recording facility and by far the best place we have worked in yet.
"We started by setting up and tracking KC's [Howard] drums.
"With the help of engineer Zack Ohren, we are confident that this album will have our best production to date!"
"Concepts for new material are very special to us on a personal level. The lyrics reflect on the world around us, visions of the future, the coming together of energy, and the balance of life both positive and negative. We also feel that the music and concepts are very tied together, so that the music actually embodies the emotions of the lyrical concepts. It's something we've always tried to do but this time it really feels right. We describe it as 'death metal from the soul.'"

VALKYRJA Preparing To Release \'Contamination\'
 Swedish black metallers VALKYRJA will release their second album, "Contamination", via Metal Blade Records on the following dates:
Jan. 15: Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy
Jan. 18: Rest of Europe
Jan. 19: USA and Canada
The CD was recorded at Necromorbus Studios (WATAIN, DESTRÖYER 666, RAZOR OF OCCAM) in Alvik, Sweden in June-July 2009 with producer Tore Stjerna.

ANIMA To Release \'Enter The Killzone\' In February
 German deathcore maniacs ANIMA will release their new album, "Enter The Killzone", on February 26 via Metal Blade Records. The drums for the CD were laid down at Rape Of Harmonies studios in Triptis, Germany. The group previously stated about its new material, "It will be essentially more sophisticated [than 2008's 'The Daily Grind'] and intense as hell!"

SCORPIONS: New Album Artwork Unveiled
 German hard rock veterans SCORPIONS will release their new album, "Sting In The Tail", in Europe on March 19. The CD was recorded at a studio in Hannover, Germany with Swedish producers Mikael "Nord" Andersson and Martin Hansen (the team behind THE RASMUS' "Dead Letters" CD).

ENTHRONED: New Song Posted Online
