METALLICA Sold 52 Million Albums In U.S. Since 1991
METALLICA is one of the top-selling artists since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking album sales in May 1991, with cumulative U.S. sales of more than 52 million copies. The band's 1991 self-titled fifth album, commonly known as "the black album," also surpassed SHANIA TWAIN's 1997 record, "Come On Over", as the best-selling CD of the SoundScan era. The Nielsen SoundScan system began compiling sales electronically more than 18 years ago on a weekly basis, providing more accurate sales figures that form the basis for the Billboard music charts.
Although METALLICA had scored their first radio and video airplay with their previous effort, 1988's "...And Justice For All", the black album was the band's biggest commercial breakthrough, producing five singles and making them into one of the most popular rock bands in the world.

VADER Frontman Issues Year-End Update
Guitarist/vocalist Piotr "Peter" Wiwczarek of Polish death metallers VADER has issued the following update:
"On behalf of VADER commando, I would like to wish you extremely metal year 2010! Let it be a fulfillment of your dreams and expectations!!! I also take the occasion to briefly summarize the past year 2009.
"It was another hard-working year in our career. We played nearly 150 gigs!!! It was also a time of trial for the new line up of the band and... we passed the exam, just because 'when there's a WILL, there's a WAY!'
"The band was well received by both European and U.S. fans (worth to mention that in the U.S. we played nearly 40 gigs closing the year 2009). But, of course, the most important for us is a new record deal with mighty Nuclear Blast and the new album, 'Necropolis'.
"The album was released in the end of August (Europe) and September (the U.S.) and immediately gained a huge number of supporters — both among diehard VADER's maniacs and also large amount of new fans. Thank you for this!!!
"I'm so sorry to say that our 'favourite' Internet instigators and trolls (I am talking here mainly to our Polish countrymen...) didn't see the band's collapse and downfall. VADER still exists and 'Necropolis' is just the beginning!
"How about recent news from band's camp? Guitarist Marek Pajak known from a Polish band ESQARIAL will join VADER on the upcoming tour with MARDUK in January. Vogg, who played with us during the last year, is going to hit the road with his great band DECAPITATED. We wish him all the best for the future, another crushing album of DECAPS, and would like to thank for a great time he spent with VADER. Let the power be with you, brother!!!
"In mid-February, we kick off a tour in the U.K., Ireland and Benelux. Right after the tour we hit the road again, appearing on U.S. Killfest together with OVERKILL.
"Once again, THANK YOU for a great 2009! Stay metal!"

SUFFOCATION Drummer: Every Day We Struggle With The Relevance Of The Industry
Diabolical Conquest 'zine recently conducted an interview with drummer Mike Smith of influential New York death metallers SUFFOCATION. A few excerpts from the question-and-answer session follow below.
Diabolical Conquest: Can you tell us about ["Blood Oath"'s] gestation and creative process, how long it took to write/record? Did the writing and recording go smoothly? Any differences in opinion in the creative team at any point, or songs that were particularly difficult to track?
Mike Smith: This album was actually designed to have a more simplistic approach. With that said, it seems as though the listeners are finally able to grasp more of the details, which, in turn, offers a better listening experience. We are not convinced that the "new listeners" are interested in us showing off what we can do in the name of extreme as opposed to just being catchy and relevant. It took 20 years for us to give in to that approach, but no matter what we always strive to be unique in our own right and approach. We write what's natural to us. The recording process isn't difficult for us to get through. The studio sessions are always smooth and on our terms at this point.
Diabolical Conquest: When the band reformed, you took the role of manager. Now you have Extreme Management Group working on your behalf. Was this, and perhaps the move to your new label Nuclear Blast, a necessary step in order for the band to progress? Are you seeing the benefit?
Mike Smith: Well, everything we do is in "hopes" of moving forward in progression. The jury is still out as to the benefits thus far. Most involved in the behind-the-scenes industry has lost their minds, in my opinion. We have some important relationships as well as some fruitless ones at the moment.
Diabolical Conquest: "Blood Oath" is SUFFOCATION's first album with Nuclear Blast, having been on Relapse since reforming. From reading previous comments of yours, it seems you were fairly ambivalent towards Relapse. Are you confident that Nuclear Blast can deliver where Relapse might not have? What have Nuclear Blast brought to the table that Relapse didn't or couldn't?
Mike Smith: Nuclear Blast has a different level of focus that allows us to at least take them seriously as a major label for the genre. I believe they are open to ideas that are needed to catch the attention of the new generation.
Diabolical Conquest: You've said that when you were signed to them, Roadrunner didn't know what they had with SUFFOCATION. Could you elaborate on what you mean by that?
Mike Smith: We've influenced two generations of death metal musicians. Usually that would mean your career would deserve quality attention spent on nurturing the worldwide success. That definitely wasn't realized at the time of our debut record, "Effigy of the Forgotten". That doesn't mean it's too late to recognize it now, however. I'm sure I can't find that album in the stores today if I desired to purchase it. Seems like two decades of bad business to me. I doubt we can even get any to sell to our fans at the live shows. To me it's a no-brainer. Hand over the product.
Diabolical Conquest: Do you think Nuclear Blast know what they have in welcoming SUFFOCATION to their roster? And Relapse too while we're on the subject...
Mike Smith: Nuclear Blast know what they have. I have no idea what Relapse thinks on the topic.
Diabolical Conquest: Testament to the quality of "Breeding the Spawn" is how great the re-recorded material from it has been — especially the title track appearing on "Pierced from Within" (third album, 1995). Do you have plans to re-record any more of that material? Some of us are hoping we can eventually compile all the re-recorded tracks into an alternative version of the album!
Mike Smith: It all depends if we choose to write any more albums. Every day we struggle with the relevance of the industry and our continued input to it. We've done our part; we are waiting for the returns. If we do create another album, anything's possible with the remaining "Breeding the Spawn" tracks. | 0

ARCH ENEMY - New Album In 2011
Patrick Slevin of The Aquarian Weekly recently interviewed ARCH ENEMY guitarist Michael Amott. When asked about new AE material, Amott replied:
"I’ve written four song ideas that we’ve been jamming on, and I know that the other guys have ideas as well and I look forward to hearing them. We don’t typically write a lot on the road so the songwriting process will pick up once we get off the road, I hope. The idea is that we’ll be continuing to write and arrange new material throughout 2010 and we plan go back in the studio again at the end of the year and see what we come up with. Ideally, we’d like to release a new Arch Enemy album in 2011. Our last album of new material, Rise Of The Tyrant, came out back in Sept. 2007, so that’d be a good time in-between records. I’m very much looking forward to getting into the creative phase of writing and recording again!"

It\'s Official - Anniversary Reissue Of DEEP PURPLE\'s Come Taste The Band In The Works
According to DEEP PURPLE fan-site The Highway Star, GLENN HUGHES (ex-DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH) has broken the news on Twitter that he’s been indeed working with producer Kevin Shirley (LED ZEPPELIN, IRON MAIDEN), and they are working on the remixes for the reissue of Deep Purple's 1975 album Come Taste The Band. Still a work in progress, songs that have received the treatment so far include 'You Keep On Moving', 'Gettin’ Tighter', 'Dealer' and 'I Need Love'.
According to Wikipedia, Come Taste The Band was recorded between August 3 and September 1, 1975 at Musicland Studios in Munich, Germany, and released in October 1975. The album was co-produced and engineered by the band and longtime associate Martin Birch (IRON MAIDEN). It is the only Deep Purple studio record featuring Tommy Bolin, who replaced Ritchie Blackmore on lead guitar. When Blackmore left the band, many observers and critics assumed that Deep Purple would not continue. It was David Coverdale who asked Jon Lord to keep the band together, and Tommy Bolin was asked to take the guitar slot.
The band was rounded off by bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes, keyboardist Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice.
Kevin Shirley has commented on his Caveman's Diary:
"Just finishing a remix of the Deep Purple album, Come Taste The Band. What a trip!! It's been such fun - started off with 'The Drifter' and didn't want to stray too much from the originals, but by the end I'm pushing it, and there are some different bits and pieces all over - I'm diggin' it. Sent the mixes to both David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, who also came up to my studio, The Cave, for a day - Coverdale: 'Kick arse. KS...a veritable sonic treat...' Glenn Hughes: 'Yeah baby!...sounds great...Drums are way better...sounds more cohesive...two thumbs up...' I was a Deep Purple fan before I was a Zeppelin fan." | 0

DEMON HUNTER To Release \'The World Is A Thorn\' In March
Seattle-based Christian metallers DEMON HUNTER will release their new album, "The World Is A Thorn", on March 9. The band's fifth album follows the landmark documentary "45 Days", last year's "Live In Nashville" collection and a catalog of landmark releases that have made the band one of the most important in the genre.
"The World Is A Thorn" was produced by the band's longtime collaborator Aaron Sprinkle (ACCEPTANCE, ANBERLIN, THE ALMOST) and mixed by powerhouse producer Jason Suecof (ALL THAT REMAINS, TRIVIUM). It's a pairing emblematic of how skillfully DEMON HUNTER has always blended metallic might with melody.
It's a well-worn cliche these days for a band to say their new album is "our heaviest but also our most melodic," but DEMON HUNTER delivers in spades with this release. Songs like "Descending Upon Us", "Lifewar" and the title track are by far the most aggressive of the band's career; "This is the Line" and "Collapsing" are a couple of the fist-pumping but still hard-driving anthems; and "Driving Nails" is one of two ballads on the album the likes of which their fans have come to both expect and cherish.
The album formally introduces guitarists Patrick Judge (who joined the band as a touring guitarist in 2008 and is now a full-time member) and Ryan Helm (of THE ASCENDICATE) with a new batch of songs written by co-founder and vocalist Ryan Clark. Yogi Watts returns with another jaw-dropping drum performance, backed up by longtime bass player Jonathan Dunn.
"The World Is A Thorn" is a definitive mission statement from a band at a creative apex, firing on all cylinders with awe-inspiring intensity.
"The album title refers to the often harmful and destructive world that we live in," explains Clark. "Most of the songs deal with the current state of the nation and the world as a whole. In particular, the lyrics take aim at the ideals of a Godless people and the depletion of our morals and values."
DEMON HUNTER has always been a Christian band and has represented their point of view strongly, despite the larger trend of watered down philosophies that straddle the line for popularity's sake. This stance has won them respect from fellow believers and opposite points of view alike.
"In this age it has seemingly become more and more detestable to be a Christian," Clark elaborates. "Our opinions on social and political issues are no longer tolerated as valid and we are commonly viewed as the enemy. Subjective truth, self-love, unrestricted perversion, the destruction of morality: these are the things that have ultimately brought us to a place of depression and madness.
"This album is the antithesis of the modern way of life." | 0

JIMMY PAGE Hails Royal Mail\'s Rock And Roll Stamp Collection
According to NME.com, LED ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page has hailed a new range of Royal Mail stamps featuring classic British album covers.
The set of ten stamps, which enter circulation tomorrow (January 7), features iconic album covers including LED ZEPPELIN's untitled fourth album (1971), PINK FLOYD's "The Division Bell" (1994) and THE CLASH's "London Calling" (1979).
Speaking at the launch of the stamps at London's Rough Trade West, Page revealed the irony behind LED ZEPPELIN's iconic "IV" album cover.
"Almost 40 years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him," he said. "That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time."
Here is the full list of albums that will be featured on the stamps:
* THE ROLLING STONES' "Let It Bleed" (1969)
* LED ZEPPELIN's untitled fourth album (1971)
* DAVID BOWIE's "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" (1972)
* MIKE OLDFIELD's "Tubular Bells" (1973)
* THE CLASH's "London Calling" (1979)
* NEW ORDER's "Power, Corruption and Lies" (1983)
* PRIMAL SCREAM's "Screamdelica" (1991)
* PINK FLOYD's "The Division Bell" (1994)

TORTURE DIVISION To Enter Studio In January
TORTURE DIVISION, the Swedish death metal project featuring guitarist Lord K. Philipson (THE PROJECT HATE, GOD AMONG INSECTS, ex-LEUKEMIA), bassist/vocalist Jörgen Sandström (VICIOUS ART, THE PROJECT HATE, ex-ENTOMBED, GRAVE) and drummer Tobias "Tobben" Gustafsson (VOMITORY), will enter the studio in late January to begin laying down the drums for the second part of the band's second demo trilogy, "Evighetens Dårar". The group states, "You shouldn't expect the next demo anytime soon. But at least you know that we are moving forward at last."
"Evighetens Dårar I" was released in August and it featured the songs "Heretics! Now!", "Eld Och Plågor" and "Traumatic Inhuman Severance". The demo was once again mixed by Dan Swanö (EDGE OF SANITY, NIGHTINGALE, BLOODBATH). For one of the songs, TORTURE DIVISION invited its fans to send in a recording of them screaming the word "HAIL!", with and every one of the few hundred contributions making it into the song.
TORTURE DIVISION's first demo trilogy — which was previously available for free download via the band's web site — was released on vinyl on April 6, 2009 via Vic Records. The recordings were also made available in CD format through Abyss Records. Entitled "With Endless Wrath We Bring Upon Thee Our Infernal Torture", the effort contains the band's "Suffer The Shitmass" seven-inch EP as bonus tracks. | 0

Dutch brutal death metallers SUPREME PAIN, who feature in their ranks members of SINISTER, CONSOLATION, PUTREFIED and FONDLECORPSE, have parted ways with bassist Tadej Cholewa and have replaced him with Alesa Sare (ROOTA BALOOTA, SARCASM).
Commented the band: "Tadej Cholewa could not combine his work with playing in SUPREME PAIN anymore. The fact that he also lives in Slovenia and that he has to travel to Netherlands for gigs was in the end to much to combine with his job.
"We had a good time with Tadej, he is a cool guy and a great bassplayer and did a good job on the 'Nemesis Enforcer' CD. So we wish him all the best in the future.
"So we had to get a new bassplayer and the best choice was Alesa. She already played a few gigs as stand in for Tadej and she did a superb job. And our last gig as headliner at the Ear Terror Fest in Emden was a killer so we asked her if she wanted to be part of the SUPREME PAIN family of brutallity as a full member." | 0

VOTUM To Release \'Metafiction\' In March
Polish progressive rock/metal band VOTUM will release its sophomore album, "Metafiction", in March via Mystic Production. The follow-up to "Time Must Have A Stop" (ProgRock) is once again a concept effort, consisting of seven dark/atmospheric/progressive compositions. The CD was recorded, mixed and mastered between July and October at Izabelin Studio in Warsaw, where most chart-topping artists of the Polish music industry recorded their albums. The cover artwork was designed by the Mindfield group.
Commented the band: "This album is filled with charming melodies and real emotions. We also did our best not to hide away more aggressive approach known from 'Time Must Have A Stop'. We tried to create music that infiltrates mind, and gives you shivers down the spine — music that is both dark and uneasy, cold and enchanting.
"We hope that fans of atmospheric music with rock/metal inclinations will find on 'Metafiction' what they like most."
"Metafiction" track listing:
01. Falling Dream
02. Glassy Essence
03. Home
04. Faces
05. Stranger Than Fiction
06. Indifferent
07. December 20th | 0 | |

GRAND MAGUS Begins Recording New Album
GRAND MAGUS, the three-piece Swedish heavy rock band featuring "JB" Christofferson (guitar, lead vocals), Fox Skinner (bass, backing vocals) and Sebastian "Seb" Sippola (drums), entered 301 studios outside of Stockholm in December to begin recording its fifth album, "Hammer Of The North", for a spring/early summer release via Roadrunner Records. The group says, "The big room we use for the drums have unique and fantastic acoustics; we are talking some of the most punishing natural drum sounds since [KISS'] 'Creatures Of The Night' or [BLACK SABBATH's] 'Mob Rules'.
"It'll be extremely exciting to present some real stuff in this world of triggered and doctored drums and what else. We are confident that the real deal will taste better!"
