Canadian music icon Bif Naked has released a new single, "Jim", taken from her forthcoming album, Champion. Check out the official video below.
Bif: "'Jim' is a song about loss, really. It’s about that disillusionment we all feel when someone turns into an imposter. 'Jim' is the quintessential story of discovering a betrayal and 'Jim' is that villain. The song is totally about pain, and facing it head-on.
With the video we really wanted to have a triumph over the pain, and take our power back. The running theme in the video, and the song lyrics, is about finding victory over heartache. The theme and esthetic are striking and vibrantly colorful, and that was very deliberate and actually a tease, and a nod to the new album artwork itself. The reverse concept was executed beautifully, and the whole video showcases all the expertise in its very stylistic aggression. It’s a story being told that eventually reveals the truth. Like the truth being revealed that someone’s 'Jim' is really their 'Judas' all along."
Bif recently unveiled a new venture under her expansive wing with the launch of her new organic CBD boutique, MonaLisaHealing.com.
Touted as the "Renaissance of CBD", the online e-com shop celebrated its North American debut throughout both Canada and the U.S. in the fall of 2019. Specializing in premium organic, triple lab tested and verified all-hemp cannabidiol, MonaLisa Healing is set to extend their exclusive product line to the United Kingdom and Europe this February, and Australia and New Zealand in April. The store currently offers a range of 30mL CBD tinctures in varying potencies.
“I finally followed my own advice,” Bif says of the passion-driven project developed with her longtime team at Her Royal Majesty’s Entertainment. She will discuss the premiere endeavour at Vancouver’s 2020 The Wellness Show this Saturday, February 1st and Sunday, February 2nd — each at 2:00 p.m. — for the panel “An Enlightening Discussion” (Saturday) and talk “Personally Taking Control & Managing Our Health Outcome” (Sunday).
As detailed in her highly personal, Internationally best-selling memoir, I Bificus, the Canadian "Princess of Everything" — and notably, a vegan who lives a straight-edge lifestyle — has arm-wrestled breast cancer, heart surgery, and kidney failure.
And it’s not as if she isn’t busy elsewhere; Bif is set to release a brand new single, “JIM” this February 14th — ahead of a highly-anticipated next studio album — as well as podcast series, New Riot Girls, and a book of poetry and illustrations later this year. A book designed to help empower patients and their families while navigating cancer treatments and the Canadian healthcare system, is also in the works.
For the entirety of her prolific career — and woven in a way only one of the country’s most unforgettable and inspiring women could accomplish — Bif has documented her journey in a deeply personal, highly relatable and inclusive way, covering topics that allow her truths to be a source of empowerment for fans. Her mindful approach to MonaLisa Healing is proving to be no different. Priding themselves as a company that leads with integrity, MonaLisa Healing walks the talk through their equal commitment to fair trade agreements and fair consumer pricing.
“So many people, including myself, are used to popping over-the-counter drugs for almost everything,” Bif says, citing muscle pain, migraines, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and chronic pain as just a handful of the many ailments she means. “There’s a long list of issues that keep us from thriving, all while lining the pockets of companies pushing unnatural pharmaceuticals on us, and our families. And yet, it’s absolutely no secret that CBD, according to real-life testimonials, has the proven potential to positively affect these issues, and many more.
I enjoy speaking directly to health care professionals regarding patient advocacy, as well as to patients and families who are surviving and thriving. They are all my mentors, they inspire me. I believe in the goodness of people, and in everyone’s ability to move forward, taking care of each other, and getting stronger together.
In that, we want to ensure the benefits of CBD are available to everyone, no matter their socioeconomic status. There’s a lot of price gouging in the CBD world and one thing important to me is the belief that great health should be available to every single person within communities around the world, not just an elite market who can afford speciality products and services. Just because it’s available at such an accessible price point doesn’t mean the quality should be compromised, or customers should throw caution to the wind. These core tenets are so uncompromisable, the company publishes the product’s independently lab tested and triple-verified results directly on their website for transparency, and offers a worry-free, 30-day money-back return policy for customer reassurance.
Each of us at MonaLisa Healing has our own story behind our passion for CBD, and we want to share that with as many people as possible. We use our products ourselves, as do our own families and pets! We faithfully endorse CBD as a product, and believe it can help people live a healthier, happier life.”

Often compared to a jam session between Aretha Franklin and Led Zeppelin, Blues Pills' career took them from an American garage to international glory within a few years. Their self-titled debut album (2014) entered the German album charts at #4 and two years later they went straight to #1 with the successor Lady in Gold. Starting in the smallest clubs the band suddenly found themselves playing on some of the world’s biggest stages from Rock Am Ring, Download, Sweden Rock and even the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival where Deep Purple famously saw smoke on the water during Frank Zappa’s performance.
With the band’s third album, Holy Moly!, to be released on June 19, 2020 via Nuclear Blast, Blues Pills plan their return to a number of major festival stages, playing Download, Hurricane and Southside among many others throughout the summer.
But fans need not wait until summer for their first taste of the action. To support International Women’s Day on March 8, Blues Pills have released their first single "Proud Woman". The band describe their intentions with the song:
"With 'Proud Woman' we wanna give the fierce women and grrrls of the world a power anthem to turn on whenever they wanna feel empowered. Or just have fun. A song to everyone who stands behind the most obvious things of all. Equality and unity. Whoever you are, wherever you come from. Women will always be a driving force of change. And a change is gonna come."
In regards to the lyrics of "Proud Woman" vocalist, Elin Larsson, says: "I’m a proud woman came out from my inner self and the first thing I thought was: someone must have written this before. And if not, why? Hey! It’s about damn time then!
“To be a woman or non-binary in the music industry seems to be more about the gender then the music sometimes. As a woman you’re being belittled, threatened, scrutinized, made fun of, targeted and harassed in a way that the men in the industry aren't. And even so, there are so many women in the industry who made and are making their mark just as mighty as the men, and they do that despite all of the hardships they get for simply being a woman and that makes their triumphs even greater."
Harem Scarem's new studio album, Change The World, is out now via Frontiers Music Srl. Watch a video for the track "Aftershock" below, and order the album on CD, Vinyl, T-shirt Bundle, or Digital, here.
When a discussion arises on who the current heavyweights of the melodic hard rock scene are, the list of names being bantered about cannot avoid a mention of Harem Scarem. And certainly for good reason. After a five year hiatus, in 2013 the band reunited to re-record from scratch their milestone release, Mood Swings. Since then, Harem Scarem have consistently released high quality studio albums, with Thirteen and United being shining examples of the band showcasing their amazing trademark sound. At the same time, these albums offered a stylistic progression which makes Harem Scarem a band to point to for the evolution of the genre.
The new record, Change The World, is a logical next step for Harem Scarem. While it isn't a million miles from where United left off, it still shows a band at the top of their game. A cohesive unit still able to deliver a power-rock-packed punch, swaggering riffs, and hooks to die for. Harry Hess and Pete Lesperance without a doubt show the world that their partnership still works.
"We really only have one goal when we start working on a record and that is to try and write the best songs we can,” says Pete Lesperance, "In the beginning, Harry and I work individually on parts and than bring them together to see if we have a good starting point for some songs. I think we've finally found our stride (I should hope so after 30 years of being a band) and we just try to keep ourselves happy musically, but deliver something that we feel the fans will like!"
With the addition of Mike Vassos on bass, Harem Scarem are returning and ready to dominate.

An inflammation of harsh soundscapes exploding in a striking symbiosis of deep growls and clean female vocals: Sojourner’s new album, Premonitions, to be released on May 8 via Napalm Records, rises like an upcoming vortex that leaves the violent, yet undeniably beautiful stylistic evolution of their sound in an exceptional fusion of folk and atmospheric black metal.
Along with a visually stunning music video, their first single, “The Deluge”, draws its recipient into the wildness of Scottish nature and its famous Highlands. Accompanied by the unforgiving moody atmosphere, Sojourner takes your senses into a world of desperation, pain and the light shimmer of hope, that not all of our stories are inked at all.
“The Deluge” offers a first glance at the upcoming release spanning a wide range of musical forms and unfolding into a musically unpredictable ode to the unknown. Premonitions is in this sense not only a masterfully told story, but much more a milestone confirming the group’s unique approach towards the genre!
Emilio Crespo (vocal) states: “”The Deluge” represents the personal journeys that the members of Sojourner have endured for the past year. A deluge/flood is a devastating event that leaves a trail of destruction in its wake and this is encapsulated in the melancholic lyrics, hard rhythm and blistering leads of the track. We felt that “The Deluge” sets a darker tone and pace for the new album and therefore it was our first choice for the leading single of the new album, Premonitions. Due to the fact we are an international band spanning the globe, we decided to emphasize this in our first video by not pursuing one particular style, but telling the story of all the members coming together from their separate paths while mixing in stylized band shots which were all expertly shot and edited by the talented Oliver König."
Mike Lamb (guitar) adds: "Scotland has some of the most breathtaking landscapes and is a place we all hold close to our hearts for various reasons. That paired with the fact it was the right fit for “The Deluge” and Sojourner thematically, it was an easy decision to have the Scottish Highlands as the setting of the video."
Watch the official video for “The Deluge” below.
Their un-inimitable tonal trademark breathes the bands internationality: Living in four different countries, they combine each mindset and evoke the sweeping, melancholic atmospheres of nature merging with aggressive black metal fundamentals. Sojourner forms an indestructible bond that mirrors through their music. This album is not only a masterfully told story, but much more a milestone confirming the group’s unique approach towards the genre.
Premonitions will be available in the following formats:
- CD digipak
- 2-LP Gatefold vinyl (black)

DISTURBED has released the official music video for "Hold On To Memories (Live)", a live version of the band's latest single off "Evolution", which is currently Top 15 at Active Rock Radio.
Tomorrow, DISTURBED will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its debut album "The Sickness". To commemorate the two-decade mark, the band will release a special vinyl edition of the album. This limited edition of "The Sickness" will be pressed on "Black Cloud"-colored vinyl and available on July 10, a few days before the first U.S. date on the band's "The Sickness 20th Anniversary Tour".
DISTURBED singer David Draiman told Consequence Of Sound about the making of "The Sickness" album: "That was the first period of really putting our creations through that level of recording, and to finally hear those songs we had been playing on the South Side of Chicago for a couple years — to finally get the chance to spread them as a recording and use them as a marketing tool, that's what I really look back on. That was the exciting part. That first period of creation for those songs was really unique."
"The Sickness 20th Anniversary Tour" kicks off on July 15 in Maryland Heights, Missouri, hitting amphitheaters before wrapping up on September 12 in Auburn, Washington. STAIND and BAD WOLVES will serve as special guests on the tour.
In 2010, DISTURBED celebrated the tenth anniversary of the release of "The Sickness" by reissuing it with exclusive b-sides and expanded artwork, as well as a first-time-ever vinyl edition.
Released on March 7, 2000, "The Sickness" is DISTURBED's best-selling album to date, thanks to such hit singles as "Stupify", "Voices" and "Down With The Sickness".
Last September, DISTURBED's "No More" landed at position No. 1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Songs airplay chart. The track, which was the third single from the band's 2018 album "Evolution", marked DISTURBED's seventh straight No. 1 on the chart.
Each of DISTURBED's last seven singles has reached No. 1 on Mainstream Rock Songs, a feat unmatched by any artist.
DISTURBED has a total of 10 Mainstream Rock Songs No. 1s. THREE DAYS GRACE holds the record with 15 No. 1s, followed by SHINEDOWN at 14 and VAN HALEN with 13.
Finnish cello rockers APOCALYPTICA have released a brand-new track and music video, "Live Or Die", featuring guest vocals from SABATON's Joakim Brodén.
The song boasts an undeniably dynamic liaison in heavy metal — the spellbinding music of APOCALYPTICA and the potent vocals of Brodén coming together to create a fierce battle cry focused on the desecration of our planet. Released via Silver Lining Music, "Live Or Die" was composed by APOCALYPTICA and recorded in Finland with APOCALYPTICA and Martin Hansen (SCORPIONS) producing. The video, directed by Ville Juurikkala and filmed in Berlin, is a fiery performance piece that features Brodén on vocals.
APOCALYPTICA and SABATON have a new but notable history of collaboration. Most recently, the two bands recorded a version of the 2010 SABATON track "Angels Calling", released in November 2019, with a companion music video. In addition, APOCALYPTICA was special guest on SABATON's just-concluded, critically acclaimed 15-country European tour, that included APOCALYPTICA joining SABATON onstage every night for a half dozen songs. As one U.K. reviewer wrote: "The chemistry between the two bands was absolutely incredible. APOCALYPTICA were throwing around their cellos just as hard as SABATON were throwing around their guitars."
In support of their current studio album release, the all-instrumental "Cell-0", APOCALYPTICA — cellists Eicca Toppinen, Perttu Kivilaakso, Paavo Lötjönen and drummer Mikko Sirén — will kick off the first leg of their 2020 North American tour on May 3 in Orlando, Florida. The band will bring their moving and live performances to 20 cities over a three-week period wrapping up on May 26 in Boston, Massachusetts. With a setlist that will vary night to night, APOCALYPTICA's performances will be comprised of new songs from "Cell-0" as well as from the band's rich catalog. LACUNA COIL will support on all North American dates.
While Europe will enjoy one of the most engaging, exciting and "Apocalyepic" events of the year this coming autumn 2020, when the cello metal giants APOCALYPTICA unite with EPICA to entertain audiences all over the continent, from Budapest to Barcelona, on the "Epic Apocalypse Tour". The two will co-headline, showing both a refreshing camaraderie and lack of ego, and will be joined by the exciting, progressive metal band WHEEL, who will open each night with their engaging time-defying grooves and deep social exploration.
Symphonic Metal band Tulip has released a new video for “The Inner Light,” the brand new single from their forthcoming album, High Strangeness.
Texan transplants Tulip deliver their own brand of symphonic metal, spearheaded by ex-professional opera vocalist Ashleigh Semkiw, and Colin Parrish on guitar. Their story is a unique one. Publicly shamed, ostracised and cast out of the church, Semkiw and Parrish formed Tulip - an acronymic nod to their former faith.
With a calculated balance of soaring vocals (think Evanescence's Amy Lee meets Hayley Williams) and carefully-curated riffs, ‘The Inner Light’ creates an ethereal masterpiece out of atmosphere, lyrics and tone. "‘The Inner Light’ is about abandoning rituals and traditions that encourage us to lie" comments vocalist Ashleigh Semkiw. The music video, shot by The Trenches Media is a nod to the Star Trek episode of the same name.
High Strangeness boasts 12 tracks of bone crushing drums, searing guitars and masterful vocals underpinned with full orchestration and layered synths. The forthcoming LP is set for an independent release on April 10, 2020. The first single "The Inner Light" is reminds the listener that we are all inevitably forsaken. Having the courage to trust our own intuition is all we need.
Next month, Tulip will be heading to Europe in support of Tarja Turunen.
Quickly rising symphonic metal powerhouse, Lost Symphony, has unveiled their latest single, “Premeditated Destruction”, from their upcoming debut album, Chapter I, out on March 27 via XOff Records.
The song features guest performances from master shredders Brock Richards (Starset), Richard Shaw (Cradle Of Filth), Jimi Bell (Autograph, House Of Lords) and session guitarist Matt LaPierre and is the latest cut from an electrifying, instrumental master class of musicianship that also boasts appearances by past and present members/contributors from Guns N’ Roses, All That Remains, Nevermore, Steel Panther and Trans-Siberian Orchestra, among others.
Commenting on their latest single, the band’s mastermind and multi-instrumentalist Benny Goodman says, “Musically, it was written as a rebuttal to anger. It’s a culmination of all the guests who turned it into the vibe it has.”
Comprised of brothers Benny and Brian Goodman (compositions, arrangement), along with co-conspirators Cory Paza (bass, guitar), Kelly Kereliuk (guitar), Paul Lourenco (drums) and Starset’s Siobhán Cronin (violin, viola), Lost Symphony’s journey began in 2015. After crafting an initial classical demo, Benny chose to find guitar players to bring it to life. Discovering Kelly and Conrad Simon online, he began sending music back and forth collecting incredible solos. The project began taking shape when All That Remains drummer Jason Costa provided drum tracks, which led to bringing the late ATR guitarist Oli Herbert into the fold.
“We basically spent weeks in my basement putting songs together,” recalls Benny. “Oli thoughtfully constructed lead guitar parts for several of our songs and was a key collaborator. We sat and worked on everything note for note from start-to-finish. Oli brought legitimacy to this. He was like our ambassador. When he’d call other guitarists, they’d pick up the phone.”
After years of piecing together the project under the radar, Benny introduces it to the world in 2020, sharing one-song per week for two months accompanied by exclusive recording footage. The first single “This Life Moves Too Fast” [feat. David Ellefson, Jeff Loomis, & Jimi Bell] gallops forward on a hummable riff punctuated by sweeping violin, propulsive bass, and lyrical fretwork. Uniting Loomis, Ellefson, and Bell, it ebbs and flows between moments of scorching soloing and orchestral reprieve.

Fluid Existential Inversions features some of the most dramatic and epic sounds of the band's career.
"We pushed ourselves to be bigger and better, musically speaking, and to me that's the essence of progressive music," states guitarist/vocalist Sacha Dunable. "On this album, there are drums played in ways I've never heard before. There are synths used in contexts I've never heard before. Intronaut has the most unique bass player in all of heavy metal as far as I'm concerned, and I even practiced guitar to get myself out of my comfort zone. So I think we progressed and made the best album ever."

British rockers ENTER SHIKARI will release their sixth album, "Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible", on April 17. The official music video for the disc's first single, "The Dreamer's Hotel", can be seen below. The clip was shot in Paris in February and directed by visual artist Polygon (TAME IMPALA, BRING ME THE HORIZON), who also helmed the video for ENTER SHIKARI's previous single, "Stop The Clocks".
"We took another wonderful trip to Paris once again to record a video with our friend Polygon," says vocalist Rou Reynolds. "We built minimal hotel sets and used psychedelic analogue effects to create a space that reflects the hope but also the desolation of the song."
"Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible" is produced to dazzling effect by renowned frontman and visionary Rou Reynolds from a band at the peak of their creative output with a unique story, underlining their 13-year succession as a pioneering and uncompromising musical force. This is an album about possibility, the unnerving irony of endless possibility, the band asking themselves what they can achieve as the world questions "what is possible?"
"Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible" is a lucid soundtrack for a new decade, with a poignant social commentary that expertly leads the listener from pure pop to scorching punk-rock fury, through four-to-the-floor beats and beautiful orchestral composition. "Waltzing Off The Face Of The Earth" (I. Crescendo) and (II. Plangevole) draws you into the madness of modern life, "you can’t trust your own eyes, and you only hear lies, our future’s been denied and there’s nowhere to hide now that nothing is true and everything is possible." "Elegy For Extinction" is a classical gem recorded in Prague with the City Of Prague Symphony Orchestra and arranged by renowned film and television soundtrack composer George Fenton ("Gandhi", "Blue Planet", "Planet Earth", "Groundhog Day", "My Name Is Joe"), and the first single "The Dreamers Hotel" is a lavishly produced anthem.
The last decade has seen ENTER SHIKARI increase their stature year on year, a rare career story which has taken them to four Top 10 albums in the U.K., millions of streams, huge sellout world tours (most recently in Russia and two American), as well as multiple awards: last year crowned Best British Band by Rock Sound, with Best Album from Kerrang! for "The Spark" at 2018's Awards.

Polish rockers Memocrasher have revealed their latest single and video, “Burn,” from the upcoming Humanity & Revenant double album release, due out on September 4. Preorders available here.
“‘Burn’ tells how hard it is to resist things we really want, even we know we shouldn't have them,” says guitarist/vocalist Dave Andrew. “In the end, you'll always fall for this desire one way or another. This can lead your life into new, exciting chapters, but uncontrolled it may screw you up really bad.
Add drummer Maciej Lenartowicz, “To me, ‘Burn’ is a song about a sensation that overcomes you with such an unrelenting force that you know you are powerless to resist it. It's just like the song: fast, aggressive, unrelenting.”
The video takes this concept and pushes the limits, with the band playing inside a flaming pentagram while a sexually charged freakshow performs around them, illustrating how acting blindly on desire can destroy humans and everything around surrounding them.
“It's a great power that can raise you to the top, or burn things to the ground,” Andrew says. “I remember when four years ago I woke up in the middle of the night just hearing this song in my head. It was obvious it had to be our first single, but we had no idea what an insane piece of art it'd become once Adam Barker and VideoInk crew put their hands on the visuals. They pushed it to the whole new level and now I can only sit and smile being proud of what we've been able to accomplish.”
Founded in 2014 by Dave Andrew and guitarist Hubert Malicki in Ustrzyki Dolne, Poland, Memocrasher initially self-released a debut album, Revenant, in 2016. After honing their skills on stages at major Polish festivals and gaining notoriety in their home country, the group began focusing on writing new material.
Memocrasher’s sophomore album, Humanity, is a more mature offering, chock full of the melody and hooks that have already caught the ears of hard rock fans in Poland. Still feeling that the songs from the debut were worthy of a wider release, Memocrasher made the decision to re-recorded and remaster Revenant, and offer the two releases and a double album set, entitled Humanity & Revenant.

Paul Stanley paid tribute to Kobe Bryant during KISS's concert Wednesday night (March 4) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Before launching into the KISS classic "Do You Love Me", Stanley donned a jersey bearing the No. 24 Kobe wore during his illustrious Los Angeles Lakers career.
"We're in the house that Kobe built. None of us would be here if this place wasn't really like a memorial to somebody who was so much more than a basketball player, somebody who's been a role model," Stanley told the crowd in the arena where Bryant played for the Lakers for two decades. "And tonight, I think we dedicate this show not only to Kobe and his daughter Gigi, but to all the people who perished on that helicopter. So, let's reach back to something from 'Destroyer'. This song says, 'Do You Love Me'."
Kobe and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna "Gigi" Bryant were among nine people killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, on January 26. Bryant was 41.
On the day of Kobe's passing, Stanley tweeted: "WOW! Kobe. Such A Shock. My Condolences To His Wife And Children. Very, very sad. #KobeBryant"
Bryant played for the Los Angeles Lakers for 20 years and is considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He won five NBA championships, was an 18-time All-Star, was the NBA's Most Valuable Player in the 2007-2008 season and is fourth on the NBA's all-time scoring list. He retired after the 2015-16 season, having spent his entire career with the Lakers. The franchise retired his No. 8 and No. 24 jersey numbers in December 2017.
Kobe and Gianna were buried February 7 in a private ceremony in Corona Del Mar.
British rockers ASKING ALEXANDRIA will release their new album, "Like A House On Fire", on May 15 via Sumerian Records. The band's sixth full-length studio LP was once again recorded by producer Matt Good (HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD, FROM FIRST TO LAST), who also helmed 2017's self-titled effort.
"Like A House On Fire" was recorded throughout 2019 in between a high-profile arena tour supporting SHINEDOWN and a direct support slot on the road with PAPA ROACH. The intermittent sessions allowed them to tap into the energy of touring, resulting in a 15-track opus of massive, arena-filling rock songs.
The official music video for ASKING ALEXANDRIA's new single, "Antisocialist", can be seen below.
Guitarist Ben Bruce says: "We have been working our asses off for the last couple of years on creating this album. We are absolutely in love with what we have created. There are songs about triumph, strength and resilience. There are songs about losing love, losing passion and losing faith. There are songs about moving on to new things and song’s celebrating our journey. This album is filled with love and passion from the five original members of ASKING ALEXANDRIA."
Speaking about "Antisocialist", Bruce continues: "'Antisocialist' is a song written for everyone who just wants to stick their middle fingers up high in the air and scream at the top of their lungs. It's a song for the frustrated, the forgotten, the unappreciated and the downtrodden. It's a song for those who work hard and receive nothing in return. It's a song for those who dream hard and are laughed at. A song that says what we all feel from time to time and a song to just let loose to! Enjoy!"

"Our goal for this album was to find our voice and experiment openly with sound, emotion and chemistry as a whole," saus Dawn Of Ouroboros. Metallica have released this new "Leper Messiah" performance video, filmed at WiZink Center in Madrid, Spain on February 3, 2018.

Senckenberg researcher Dr. Torben Riehl and his colleague Dr. Bart De Smet from Ghent University in Belgium have named a previously unknown species of deep-sea crustacean in honor of the band Metallica. In a study published in the scientific journal PeerJ, the scientist named the organism after his favorite band and to also raise awareness. This creature has been discovered in the abyss of the northern Pacific while conducting environmental baseline studies as part of a broader environmental impact assessment for a potential future nodule extraction project, reports Phys.org.
"The powerful music of Metallica has accompanied me the majority of my life. Songs such as ‘Master Of Puppets' and ‘One' are outstanding masterpieces in rock history and I am thrilled to be able to give something back to the band by naming a new species after them!" says deep-sea scientist Dr. Torben Riehl of the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum Frankfurt, Germany.

The newly discovered worm-like creature Macrostylis metallicola inhabits the Clarion Clipperton Zone, situated roughly between Hawaii and Mexico. It is adapted to depths of 4,132–5,055 meters and over 400 times the pressure of our atmosphere. Only up to 6.5 mm long it dwells in absolute darkness without eyes and is colorless. Its environment consists of manganese nodules –concretions of metallic elements several millions of years old that can range in size from very small to approximately the size of an orange. These contain valuable compounds, such as cobalt, copper, manganese, nickel and rare-earth elements. "The scientific Latin suffix '-cola' translates into 'inhabiting' and hence refers to the habitat of the Metallica species." explains Riehl and adds: "Because of the wealth of resources in this part of the deep seafloor it may soon be mined for minerals needed to meet the growing demand for raw materials." Understanding the baseline environmental conditions is important for developing science-based management plans and mitigation strategies to ensure biodiversity as well as ecosystem health and function are maintained.
Metallica commented saying: “We’ve played on all seven continents, made it into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and now… we’re a crustacean! Senckenberg researcher Dr. Torben Riehl and Dr. Bart De Smet of Ghent University in Belgium have discovered a new crustacean species in the depths of the northern Pacifica Ocean and decided to name it after some rock band… Welcome to our world Macrostylis metallicola!
“First of all, stellar name Dr. Riehl. Second, what an honor! Not only did Dr. Riehn name his discovery after a band as he has been a fan since childhood, The Thing That Should Not Be has a few things in common with us. The worm-like creature dwells in complete darkness, has no eyes, and is colorless. Talk about Blackened! It also lives amongst metallic nodules containing cobalt, copper, manganese, nickel, and rare-earth elements. So it basically lives in a rock stadium? Now that’s one metal crustacean!
“You just never know what you’ll find ‘lurking beneath the sea'.”
Hypnotizing heavy metal band, Spell, will release its new LP, Opulent Decay, on April 10 via Bad Omen Records. Featuring ten tracks of prime, progressive heavy music rife with crepuscular atmosphere, Opulent Decay paints an aural vista where moonlit melody, strident heaviness and potent romanticism collide to startling effect.
Hailing from Vancouver, British Columbia, yet divining their art from the realm of nocturnal visions and fantasies, Spell have already proven themselves mighty chroniclers of the more supernatural quarters of the heavy music sphere. Recorded at Little Red Sounds studio in New Westminster, B.C., Opulent Decay is an emotionally charged psychic travelogue wreathed in mysticism. The album embraces harmonic guitar heraldry while also showcasing a band as adept at essaying a hymnal a capella piece like the beguiling "Ataraxia" as they are the wistful and melancholic "Dawn Wanderer", the pastoral-tinged and progressively slanted "Primrose Path" or the catchy and barnstorming title-track.
“Many bands find their third album the most difficult because they’re trying to recreate what they’ve already done; for us, it gets easier and better every time,” states Spell bassist / vocalist Cam Mesmer. “As ideas emerged during the writing process, we nurtured them and gave them all the time and care they needed to flourish and bloom.”
A sampling of what Opulent Decay holds in store can be experienced now as Spell releases a music video for the LP's lead track, "Psychic Death". Directed by Sean Edwards of Toronto based film collective Ramble Films, the "Psychic Death" video showcases Spell at the height of its powers. Watch the video below.
"I've been close to underground music for most of my life and like to keep my foot in it artistically to help promote the scene and bands I admire so i'm glad I contacted Cam early to try and create something for the release," says Edwards. "This one was pretty experimental with how it came together based on some themes we had discussed and really brings the song to life, visually."
Spell's debut, 2014's Full Moon Sessions, and 2017 LP, For None And All, are proof positive of an outfit - completed by drummer and co-vocalist Al Lester and guitarist Graham McVie - whose grasp of diverting dynamics matched their infectious songcraft. However, these were apparently mere preludes to Opulent Decay, the band’s third and finest record to date.
In addition to the lyrical influence of romantic poets like Keats, Shelley and Coleridge, there's an underlying concept to Opulent Decay, as Cam explains: “All of the songs deal with the contrast between opulence and austerity, and the decay that results from imbalance. Our drive to avoid suffering is strong, but it can be overcome by the love for another and the desire to put them before yourself. Opulent Decay examines this balance and the dangers that await on either side of the pendulum."
Divining its art from the realm of nocturnal visions and fantasies, Spell has already proven to be mighty chroniclers of the more supernatural quarters of the heavy music sphere.
“Music, like dreams, exists in feeling rather than explanation," continues Mesmer. "In sleep, the strangest things can elicit joy or terror — this is why dreams are so difficult to articulate. Creating music, for me, is similar; often, I’ll wake in the dead of night with a powerful feeling or melody in my mind, not connected to reality in any concrete way. I’ll then leap out of bed to try and capture it before it disappears!”
Stroudsberg, Pennsylvania's WISDOM IN CHAINS has released a music video for its version of the TWISTED SISTER classic "Burn In Hell". The clip was filmed in the band's practice space and was originally livestreamed on social media.
As viewers from around the globe chimed in with comments (some complimentary, some taking the piss) including Hoya (MADBALL) and Craig Setari (SICK OF IT ALL) ask for a song request. After turning down quite a few, the unlikely request for TWISTED SISTER comes in, which the band is only too happy to fulfill — though this is a much more brutal hardcore punk version than the '80s glam metal original.
Speaking on the tune, WISDOM IN CHAINS released the following statement: "We always loved TWISTED SISTER and maintain till this day that they are the best band to ever wear make-up. Musically they are so catchy, and vocally, Dee [Snider] is one of the best in the game. 'Burn In Hell' has it all — the evil vibe, it's hard, straight up.. we love this jam!"
WISDOM IN CHAINS is considered the working man's hardcore band espousing blue-collar ethics with a raw n' direct approach. The group has been going strong for close to two decades and has completed international tours with such mainstays of the genre such as MADBALL, H2O, COMEBACK KID and many more. Their latest album, "Nothing In Nature Respects Weakness", was released in 2018 via Fast Break! Records.
