MALIGNO Mixing New Album
 Mexican doom rockers MALIGNO are currently mixing their third album, tentatively titled "TFD", in Los Angeles, California with American producer/engineer Billy Anderson (MELVINS, NEUROSIS, CATHEDRAL, SLEEP). The CD was recorded by MALIGNO at La Nave studios in Monterrey, Mexico and features collaborations with the acclaimed Mexican guitar duo RODRIGO Y GABRIELA and TESTAMENT guitar legend Alex Skolnick. STRATOVARIUS Drummer Diagnosed With Cancer
 Swedish keyboardist Jens Johansson of multi-national melodic metallers STRATOVARIUS has issued the following update:
"Dear STRATOVARIUS fans, I am afraid we have some quite terrible news. News of the worst imaginable kind. It's about our friend and [German] drummer Jörg Michael [STRATOVARIUS].
"Jörg has cancer.
"He recently discovered a lump on his neck, went to the doctor, they decided to operate, and found what they call 'a malignant thyroid neoplasm.' They took out his whole thyroid just to have the best chance to get everything out. He will also have to undergo a regimen of radiotherapy.
"He is a fighter. We have all talked to him and it's clear that this guy is not down for the count. He and his team of German doctors are pissed off and ready to kick ass, and I would not want to be a little cancer cell on these guys' shit list.. believe me.
"Jörg and his family (and us guys in the band) found this out only last week, after the operation. Naturally we are all going between a lot of emotions, sadness, worry, shock, confusion, even anger.
"As for STRATOVARIUS, as you perhaps know, there is a long tour coming up with HELLOWEEN, and with the surgery and therapy that will now follow there is no way Jörg can do the first part of the tour. For me personally, I at first felt quite hopeless about the tour, because I was so upset about all this news. But Jörg himself has been extremely clear that he does not want the band to cancel a single show because of this. In the end, this is what made at least me feel better about going back hitting the road next week.
"So, we have debated what to do for many days now. Jörg first suggested my brother Anders to do this November-December 2010 leg, but it turns out Anders will, unfortunately, be busy recording some record or other with that little indie cellar band of his called HAMMERFALL. :o)
"After a lot of searching, we found a guy that both can do it and didn't have other commitments: Alex Landenburg [AT VANCE, ANNIHILATOR, MEKONG DELTA]. He plays well, Jörg says he is a great guy (very important!) and he even started learning the set already before we even had decided what to do, which to me shows a lot of dedication. You can Google Alex's name if you are curious.
"So it turns out that STRATOVARIUS will do the first leg of the HELLOWEEN '7 Sinners' tour, just as planned, only not with Jörg behind the kit, but with Jörg very much as a motivator to us being there. Not one single date will be cancelled or changed.
"Jörg wants to be back on the road with us again as soon as possible depending on the thearapy, but we are not making any promises; that one is up to powers even higher than Jörg Michael and his doctors.
"We will try to keep you somewhat updated.
"Anyway, the most important thing is that they think they got all the bad stuff out and that the end result is that we just fix that sentence I wrote above. We will then say: Jörg had cancer. But he beat it."

DÉTENTE: Previously Unreleased Footage From \'Recognize No Authority\' Recording Sessions
 Previously unreleased footage shot by the late Baird Bryant (GIMME SHELTER, EASY RIDER) of the recording sessions for DÉTENTE's classic "Recognize No Authority" album is available below. The video was filmed at Baby O studio Hollywood in 1985 and features a young Caleb Quinn (guitar) recording the song "Vultures In The Sky".

CHICKENFOOT Has 14 New Songs In The Works
 Last week Bryan Reesman's Attention Deficit Delirium spoke to guitar guru Joe Satriani, who is currently on the road in Europe, about Satriani's latest solo album, "Black Swans And Wormhole Wizards", and the forthcoming CHICKENFOOT CD, which is in the works. Back in the spring, Satriani mentioned that one song that the group was working on was called "Come Closer".
"I haven't listened to it in months," confessed Satriani. "I've been busy, as you can tell. Right after I finished mixing the 'Black Swans' record, I got home and had a few weeks and wrote 10 songs and sent them off to Sammy (Hagar; ex-VAN HALEN and current CHICKENFOOT singer). Right now he's sitting on 14 songs that he's writing melodies and lyrics to, and the original band will get back together at the end of January to record [the second CHICKENFOOT album]. Right now my hand is totally into this [solo tour], so I don't have any room for any other material. I am just getting to the point where I can memorize the tour set and start to mess around with it, so I don't want to get another band's set list into my head and disrupt everything."
Drummer Chad Smith recently confirmed that he won't tour with CHICKENFOOT next year in support of the band's second album due to scheduling conflicts with his main group, the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS.

GRAHAM BONNET Signs On For Second LYRAKA CD
 LYRAKA has announced the signing of legendary rock vocalist Graham Bonnet (RAINBOW, MSG, ALCATRAZZ) for the recording of their second CD, Lyraka Volume 2. The composer and lead guitarist, Andy DiGelsomina, has stated, "For the second album, Graham will not only be adding his voice to the songs, but will be involved in the songwriting. I would be foolish to pass on an opportunity to collaborate with the man who co-wrote songs like 'Assault Attack', 'Desert Song', and 'Island In The Sun'."
A statement from Graham Bonnet reads: "I have been given opportunities in the past to do many kinds of projects; a word I don't like because it is one used, in my opinion, too many times. Lyraka is an adventure for me. Jasmine and Andy have given me the chance to sing and be involved in the creative side of a new world. I think we have come up with something unique. This is a different path; a road less travelled and a new light. Thanks to Jasmine and Andy for their great images... they makes my job all that much easier."
Session work for Lyraka Volume 2 will begin in February 2011. Bonnet will also be enlisted for narrative work in the upcoming Lyraka movie, slated for production in 2013. | 0 | |

DREAM THEATER To Hit The Studio In January To Start Working On New Album; New Drummer To Be Revealed Soon
 DREAM THEATER's John Petrucci revealed at the Long Island Music Hall Of Fame awards that they're almost ready to announce a new drummer, and they were shocked and saddened at Mike Portnoy's decision to leave while on the road with AVENGED SEVENFOLD.
'We had some auditions several weeks ago and we are going into the studio in January to start recording our latest album. It wasn't easy," says Petrucci. "We'd been in the band together with Mike for 25 years and him leaving the band was a major shock and a major heartbreak to us. We look ahead to the future positively."

A new partnership with Cardinal Releasing Ltd. in association with Emperor Media Ltd. and the highly acclaimed "Classic Artists" series brings its first DVD special. "Classic Rock Presents - Jimi Hendrix: The Guitar Hero", a documentary narrated by modern-day guitar god Slash.

OVERDRIVE Extends Deal With LION MUSIC; \'Angelmaker\' Due In January
 Classic Swedish metal merchants OVERDRIVE have extended their deal with Lion Music to include the band's upcoming album, "Angelmaker", due out in January 2011. This time the band wrote and recorded 18 songs, 12 of which will appear on the final product.
Commented guitarist Janne Stark: "This time we used a panel of 15 people to help us select which tracks to use. It was really great to hear what people outside of the band thought of the tracks before we decided on which to put on the album. Some of our own favorites were not as high up on the list as expected, while others were higher than expected, which was interesting. Hopefully our listening panel reflects the general public, which then would make this a killer album."
The CD was recorded by the band and Johan Blomkvist (BLINDED COLONY, KAPTAIN SUN) and mixed by Pelle Saether (GRAND DESIGN, DIABOLICAL, WOLF) at Studio Underground.
"I have worked with Pelle on several other recordings, such as LOCOMOTIVE BREATH, MOUNTAIN OF POWER and ZELLO, and he has an ability to understand and capture just the sound you're after," Janne stated. "He did that this time, too. To be honest, this is the best-sounding OVERDRIVE album to date."
The band has also, for the first time, included a cover song. It's a classic heavy metal arrangement on the Russ Ballard-penned track "I Know There's Something Going On", originally recorded by Frida, of ABBA fame, back in 1982.
OVERDRIVE, formed in 1980, still features original members Janne Stark and Kjell Jacobsson on guitars, Kenth Ericsson on bass and Kenta Svensson on drums, plus vocalist Per "PerilOz" Karlsson, who joined the band at the reunion in 2003 and has since been an integral part of the lineup.
The "Angelmaker" cover, which is yet to be revealed, was once again created by acclaimed cover artist Monowasp (TNT, HOUSE OF LORDS, PLACE VENDOME).

 In cooperation with the German Metal Hammer magazine, Finnish metallers NORTHER recently put up a well received cover artwork competition for their upcoming album Circle Regenerated.
After receiving "an unbelievable amount of great art pieces," the winner is Fabio Bonetti from Italy. Check out the winning artwork at the left (click to enlarge) and the voting results of the top ten submissions by clicking here.
Circle Regenerated will be Norther's sixth studio album and will surface in the spring 2011 via Century Media Records. The band describes this as "the best output in their career, a real step forward!"

AVA INFERI - New Album Details Revealed
 Portuguese / Norwegian metallers AVA INFERI have finished work on their new album. The band’s fourth opus is entitled Onyx, and will be released on February 14th in Europe an February 22nd in North America.
Guitarist and band leader Rune Eriksen made the following statement about Onyx:
“The Tree of Life has got to be learnt by heart; you must know it backwards, forwards, sideways, and upside down; it must become the automatic background of all your thinking. You must keep on hanging everything that comes your way upon its proper bough... and so became Onyx.
“These words of wisdom I borrowed for a moment just to emphazise the importance of evolving to become who you essentially are. How necessary and rewarding it is to breathe the air of experience, to gratefully accept the opportunities granted and to feed on life's treasures and dreams. For it is through our life experiences and the knowledge attained we are able to develop and define our music and musicality. This I feel strongly about.
“There is no easy pointing fingers and defining this band of ours, and I really do enjoy that fact. It’s amusing and quite liberating to be between a few of those "chairs" that have been defined by the masses of journalists, fans and followers of music all over. Some have defined us as gothic doom, sure we have those aspects, but I wouldn't state that it ends there. No, on the contrary Watson, it most certainly continues. Since the very first Burdens we have been named and linked to several styles and bands, although the comparisons have differed slightly from album to album, there has always been graphic and colourful ways of attempting to describe us. Even during this period of mixing and mastering I received many diverse compliments and equatives from the one and only Mr. Dan Swano, (which himself has a long list of great merrits to be counted). Some of the written words he threw at me consisted of 'sounds like some Tim Burton-esque dark/doom metal' and my favorite, which was aimed at one of our new songs; 'I got the feel of Bay Laurel crossfaded with Power Windows-era RUSH and something unique....damn great!!'. I admit I had no instant idea what he was talking about being shamely unfamiliar with most of the works from mentioned bands... However, and might I add once again, it is proven somewhat clear that music and its expression can speak louder than these genres and borders and that a given categorization can be a preconceived token of repetition to an open mind or simply an easy presumption for the "not knowers". There should definitely be no rules in art, no limitations and no foregone conclusion. Just allow it to unfold and manifest. Let it become, let it be!
“The Onyx stone has had diverse meaning over the ages. The most folkloric or saga-friendly might be the one that features a sleeping Venus, telling the tale of a crooked cupid cutting her fingernails, leaving them scattered on the ground. And obviously, as in the design of the Gods, they were transformed to stone and known on earth as Onyx. Maybe not exactly what we had in mind, however an amusing and inspiring tale.
“No, we aimed for the more metaphysical properties of this peculiar stone, which for us would include such as increasing happiness, intuition and developing ones instincts. It’s supposedly a strength giving stone as well, not only protecting from "evil" but also meaning good for athletes and for people under mental pressure and stress. The bad side, if that can be stated, are the vividly dark dreams and also foretellings of the future. Not for the faint hearted then I sense... Mostly I suspect these theories comes from conspiring ancient lores, as it was thought that inside the actual Onyx stone there was a demon imprisoned. This demon was awakened by night and spread terror and nightmares to the ones within reach, such as the bearers of the stone. Tales from the old world it just as well might be... Well, enough mythology and folklore lessons for now. However, I can reveal that these "attributes" are all a part of the main topics in this album, both concerning the lyrical side of things and also as a part of the influence brought forward into the music. All to a certain extent of course, but still, very much so.
“Truth be told, nothing really surprises me anymore, and I’m sure that many of us have been going through some hard and demanding phases in our lives, leaving an unmistakable item of charm in the sack of The Fool. It’s all beautiful though, as these experiences we can bring along and forge into some sort of poetry or a subject of resonance, as this album you soon are about to hear. It has its pain, it has its wonders, it has its beauty and its darkness, and it definitely has its own nerve. We are once again happy, and perhaps even more so this time (as I believe that the more conscious one gets, the more one is actually allowed to feel the depths of completion and satisfaction granted from persistent work). And now, seeing the album has taken its form and showcased its will to breathe, I can only hope its content and purpose will continue to amaze people the same way it did to me.
“Onyx is real, and it is definitely the sound of profound honesty, development and adventures, for good and for bad. But then again, those words could possibly be the essence of most albums, me thinks... To end it off, I would like to thank Carmen and myself, the main creators, for sticking through this together and for not giving up one ounce of faith in this piece of work. There are stars out there, waiting to be found. Blessed be!”

Religious Group Protest Leads To Cancelation Of Australian Black Metal Festival
 According to Metal Obsession, a Sydney, Australia-based religious group on Facebook has seemingly successfully protested against the running of a black metal mini-festival, dubbed "Black Mass", at Sydney venue Newtown RSL. The venue has reportedly already pulled out from the event, and the festival promoter, Séance Records, has postponed the event until another date/venue can be found.
The protesting Facebook group described the festival as a "satanic 'Black Mass' celebration [which] is simply disgraceful. The advertising which features the insignia of the Church of Satan and an inverted crucifix is encouraging people to come and partake in an 'unholy spell to be cast upon the city of Sydney' featuring the 'ultimate of soul-possessing occult revelations…unbridled blasphemy… [and] a union of all things unholy.'"
Séance Records commented on the cancelation in a press release posted on Brisbane-based metal forum Brismetal, stating, "Less than two weeks out from the show The RSL board has pulled the plug on Black Mass festival. They have blatantly cancelled with no prior notice and with no option of negotiation or compromise. They have sadly bowed under pressure from Christians who have lobbied them to cancel the show.
"The Christians have launched the full scale of their campaign at the last minute, I believe in a calculated manner to sabotage us to the fullest extent possible. They have done so via a series of Facebook pages organized to have the event cancelled. From their website we can tell that these are the same people who lobby against gay and lesbian rights, womens reproductive rights and contraception. Their actions will cause large scale hurt not to a secret den of Satanists as they may imagine but to normal hard-working, tax-paying, law-abiding Australians. Young people who have taken time off work, rearranged their schedules and family life, then spent money that they probably can't afford on flights and tickets to the event in the pursuit of a shared love for heavy metal and live independent Australian music."

FATES WARNING Drummer MARK ZONDER Forms New Prog-Metal Band, Offers Lessons Via Skype
 FATES WARNING drummer Mark Zonder has issued the following update:
"I have been working on a few new things of late. I finished the album with Gary Hughes and the band TEN. Dennis Ward will be mixing and it will be out on Frontiers Records soon. Great record and I can't wait to hear the final version. Really enjoyed myself and challenged myself on this as it is a strong commercial rock album, but I also added my personality to it. This will really be something. Very proud of my work on this. I have also decided to give drum lessons via Skype. I will be able to reach students worldwide and trying to use technology to its fullest. I will be taking a stereo feed from my recording console so my drum sound should be album quality. I am planning both an ongoing course of study program or a single lesson, much like a master class.

SOILWORK, Ex-AFTER FOREVER, Ex-ORPHANAGE Members Added To \'Winter Metal Symphony\'
 Current/former members of SOILWORK, REVAMP, AFTER FOREVER, ORPHANAGE, PLEURISY will participate in the third annual "Winter Metal Symphony" show (formerly "Christmas Metal Symphony"), set to take place January 22, 2011 at 013 in Tilburg, The Netherlands. As was the case with the last two editions of the event, the singers will be backed by a six-piece band and a 30-piece classical orchestra as they perform some of the finest heavy metal and hard rock songs of all time. This unique show will contain songs from all metal genres — from prog-metal to rock, from death to speed and from industrial to symphonic.
