\'Star Wars\' Actor To Appear On THE ALIEN BLAKK Album

Mark Hamill, who played the boyish hero Luke Skywalker in all three of the original "Star Wars" films, will make a guest appearance on "Bekoming", the sophomore album from THE ALIEN BLAKK, the band led by guitarist/producer Joshua Craig Podolsky. Mark's voiceover appearance on the CD marks the very first time he has been involved in a recording session for a phonograph recording. The different voiceover sections occur a couple of times during the different mood-oriented passages that begin toward the end of the album's nine-minute title cut to lay groundwork for the lyrical content for the rest of the recording's unique lyrical approach.

Commented Joshua: "The voiceover is Mark speaking from my father's standpoint for the initial talking. Later, as the song gets back to a more aggressive feel, he asks me questions as if from beyond the grave and I give my answers back. A back-and-forth situation that broke through my world like nothing before. The song then goes toward my feelings about this has affected my relationship with my mother. The track ends, offering release from my many years of displaced anger and torture.

"This music was extremely cathartic for me as I am a very private person and I know a lot of people deal with grief in their own way every day. I think this may be why the world can hear this music that deals with anger and grieving and put a spin on it knowing that there can be an end in sight for the sadness of dealing with a loved one's passing."

"Bekoming" is due on April 6 via retail outlets in North America through Alien Records and via www.thealienblakk.com (all copies purchased from the web site will include an autograph). The CD will feature additional guest appearances by Deron Miller (CKY), Eric A.K. (FLOTSAM AND JETSAM), Kevin Talley (DAATH), Donnie Hamby (DOUBLE DRIVE) as well as contributions from David Ellefson (bass; ex-MEGADETH) and Craig Nielsen (drums; FLOTSAM AND JETSAM).

ASPHYX Explains Split With Bassist WANNES GUBBELS

Reformed Dutch death metal outfit ASPHYX has issued the following update:

"It seems that there is a lot of confusion and misunderstanding due to the fact that ASPHYX and Wannes [Gubbels, bass] have split ways. The other blog was perhaps not clear enough about this and was interpretated wrongly by some people.

"Wannes and us both agreed that it was better to split as friends and go our own way again. Wannes can concentrate on his own band, PENTACLE, and his family.

"Wannes and us are still good friends; we've known each other for ages, and there is NO bad blood at all. Wannes' heart and thoughts are 100% PENTACLE and that just didn't work out for ASPHYX. We are both two old-school death metal bands, but with different approaches and personal cultures.

"By 'non-compromising' we meant that ASPHYX does not stand open for 'newer things' or elements in our music. Perhaps we are even more conservative then the Bush government ever was.

"We, again, wish Wannes all the best in his musical career and with his family and want to thank him for the great past three years! So we say Proost!

"Our new bass player, Alwin [Zuur, PULVERIZER, ESCUTCHEON] can be heard on the upcoming split 7" with Finnish doom masters HOODED MENACE."

EPICA Frontwoman To Work On Material For Solo Album

DEEP PURPLE - Anniversary Reissue Of Come Taste The Band Due Late Spring

GLENN HUGHES (ex-DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH) recently broke the news on Twitter that he’s been working with producer Kevin Shirley (LED ZEPPELIN, IRON MAIDEN) on the remixes for the reissue of Deep Purple's 1975 album Come Taste The Band. Still a work in progress, songs that have received the treatment so far include 'You Keep On Moving', 'Gettin’ Tighter', 'Dealer' and 'I Need Love'.

The Deep Purple Appreciation Society says that Come Taste The Band has been confirmed as a deluxe 35th Anniversary two-CD release for late spring 2010. Disc 1 will include the remaster and possibly a couple of rare singles edits, Disc 2 will include the remixes and two unissued tracks. Limited Edition slipcase for the first print run, and a big booklet.

BLOODY SIGN: Two New Songs Available For Streaming

Two new songs from French dark death metallers BLOODY SIGN — "Down To Hell" and "For The Unknown" — are available for streaming on the band's MySpace page. Both cuts come off the group's third full-length album, "Chaos Echoes", which will be released in February via Blood Harvest Records. A digisleeve version for the U.S. market will follow later in the year through Ibex Moon Records. The LP version will be made available in the spring (also through Blood Harvest), featuring different artwork and new layout.

TRISTANIA Begins Recording New Album

Norwegian gothic metallers TRISTANIA have entered the studio to begin laying down their new album for a spring/summer release. Guitarist/vocalist Anders Høyvik Hidle states, "Drum recordings for the new album is about to be finalized. 11 songs completed, only one left. Guitar and bass session is starting on Sunday. The result turns out to be great — we can't wait to release this baby!"

Songtitles set to appear on the new TRISTANIA CD include "Patriot Games", "Year of the Rat", "The Emerald Piper" and "Sirens".

Ex-VADER/BEHEMOTH Bassist Launching New Project

Former VADER/BEHEMOTH bassist Marcin "Novy" Nowak is putting together a new band, tentatively dubbed ROAD'S END, with lead guitarist Chris Cannella (N17, AUTUMN'S END) and drummer Kevan Roy (ex-MASTERY). The group is still looking for another lead guitarist.

Novy is currently available for studio/session work, either individually or as part of a rhythm section (along with the above-mentioned Roy).

Novy has recorded 17 full length CDs and taped five official DVDs, all with worldwide distribution. He was also named one of the best bass players in all of the industry-related magazines.

Novy is an extremely versatile musician who is inspired not only by heavy metal, but also jazz, classical and other "good" music.

SCORPIONS Guitarist Explains Decision To Pack It In

Carlos Ramirez of AOL's Noisecreep spoke to SCORPIONS guitarist Rudolf Schenker about the band's announcement that they would be retiring. An excerpt from the chat follows below.

Noisecreep: First off, why the hell are you guys packing it in?

Schenker: We were sitting in the studio after we finished tracking [the new SCORPIONS album] "Sting of the Tail", and we realized something rather quickly. We heard these songs together, and it just captured the essence of the '80s SCORPIONS sound. It sounds like a combination of the best material on the "Lovedrive" and "Crazy World" albums. The songs have that feel and spirit. Then our manager had the idea to finish the band on a high note with this record. At first, we thought he was joking. (laughter) But then we noticed he was completely being serious. And it turns out, he was right.

Noisecreep: So you just wanted to end the band with a high note.

Schenker: Yes, exactly. Look, we have been around for a long time, and we've done so many great things together. We came out of Germany when no one thought a band from there could rock hard. We've always believed in the band and had fun doing it. "Sting of the Tail" sounds like a classic SCORPIONS album, so we decided to leave after we get done touring it since it's such a powerful record.

REX BROWN Looking Forward To Getting Back To Work With DOWN

Bassist Rex Brown (DOWN, PANTERA) has nearly fully recuperated from his fight with pancreatitis, a sudden inflammation of the pancreas which can have severe complications and high mortality despite treatment. He says, "After two major surgeries to close out 2009, I have recovered from pancreatitis and I'm looking forward to getting back to work with DOWN."

Brown and his DOWN bandmates have discussed reconvening in New Orleans soon after the Saints win the Super Bowl to begin work on a new album. With a release date yet to be announced, the new CD will be the band's fourth studio offering.

Brown, who is currently looking forward to a healthy and productive 2010, says, "I'd like to thank everyone for their support and well wishes during my illness and recovery."

DOWN tapped Danny Theriot of Metairie, Louisiana to fill in on bass for the group's most recent North American trek, which kicked off on August 3, 2009 at Beaumont Club in Kansas City, Kansas.

DOWN has inked a deal with E1 Music for the release of the long-awaited rockumentary "Down – Diary of a Mad Band", which is due in the spring. Watch the members of DOWN as they tear up Europe — literally and figuratively — on their first European tour.

TRIVIUM Guitarist Is \'Super-Stoked\' About New Song

Florida metallers TRIVIUM recently entered the studio to record a new song, entitled "Shattering The Skies Above", as well as a cover version of SEPULTURA's "Slave New World".

Commented guitarist Corey Beaulieu: "'Shattering The Skies Above' is complete and Mark Lewis begins mixing 'Shattering' and our cover we did of SEPULTURA's 'Slave New World' tomorrow!

"We are all super-stoked on how the song turned out. Being the first TRIVIUM song we have ever done that Matt [Heafy, guitar/vocals], Paolo [Gregoletto, bass] and myself did vocals on, we really wanted to do the song the way we will play it live and it really brings out a new dynamic that we have never had before and we are really stoked that we finally got to give it a shot.

"Everyone that has asked, yes, we will be playing 'Shattering The Skies Above' at all our upcoming tour dates!!!"

OZZY OSBOURNE Says New Album Is \'Very, Very Heavy\'

According to The Pulse of Radio, Ozzy Osbourne says his upcoming new album, the 10th solo studio effort of his career, will not be called "Soul Sucka" as first reported. The Prince of Darkness told RollingStone.com, "When we put that on the Internet none of my fan base liked the title. They were like, 'I can't imagine me walking around the fucking house with the words 'Soul Sucka' on my T-shirt.' So I was like, 'Fuck it. I've got to come up with something else!'" No matter what it's called, Ozzy told The Pulse of Radio what to expect. "It's very heavy. It's a cross between — it's kind of like a SABBATH/Ozzy album, you know. It's kind of, it wasn't meant to, I didn't plan on doing it but that's the way it unfolded. A lot of it's very, very heavy. I just hope people like it. I love it."

The new set is due out in July, with a fresh title yet to be announced. Ozzy's last solo project, "Black Rain", came out in 2007.

Ozzy also confirmed that Ozzfest will return this summer after taking a one-year break but did not reveal whether it would be a one-shot affair like the 2008 edition or go back to its roots as a traveling event. He also plans to head out on his own headlining arena tour next fall.

The new album and tour will introduce guitarist Gus G. Ozzy parted ways last year with axeman Zakk Wylde, who has played on every Ozzy album and almost every tour since 1988.

Ozzy's first memoir, "I Am Ozzy", arrived in bookstores this week.

Former ANNIHILATOR Bassist Launches EXES FOR EYES

Former ANNIHILATOR touring bassist Dave Sheldon has launched a new project called EXES FOR EYES. Sheldon, who has since reverted back to guitar, has enlisted Montreal vocalist "Big" James Arsenian of the band ENDAST to front the brand new group. Longtime veteran of the GTA music scene, bassist Jeff Edwards, along with Humber College jazz performance graduate and international session drummer Aaron Spink will complete the band's lineup.

Though still in the pre-production stages of its debut album, EXES FOR EYES has released four songs via its social networking sites — "Chains", "Embrace The Fire", "A Horrible Mistake" and "Exes For Eyes".

Comments Dave: "This is a very exciting time for me. Being in ANNIHILATOR has taught me a lot about the next level of the industry…things I was totally oblivious to…" He also credits ANNIHILATOR's leader Jeff Waters as "an inspiration. He's been doing this a really long time and has created a fan base that spans the globe (hard for any band, and extraordinarily hard for a Canadian band). A lot of those people view him as the ultimate guitarist, and to achieve that status while maintaining humility, values and an absolutely epic sense of humour, and well, to achieve half of what he has is something I strive for everyday, and hope to with EXES FOR EYES."

THE OCEAN: New Album Samples Available

Audio samples of nine songs from THE OCEAN's upcoming album, "Heliocentric", are available for streaming at this location. The web site also contains what is believed to be songtitles and pieces of art that will be included in the forthcoming CD, although this has not yet been officially confirmed by the band.

THE OCEAN last year announced the addition of Loïc Rossetti to the group's ranks. The addition of Rossetti marked the final step in a recent development within the band: after eight years of existence, THE OCEAN has transformed from a collective into a band. This doesn't mean that there will not be changes of lineup ever again. "I have been playing music long enough to know that people are usually in this for a limited time," commented Staps, "but the people I am working with now are the people I have always been looking for, and naturally, everyone else is much more involved than ever before."

The collective is not dead. As a matter of fact, the upcoming album will feature the largest number of additional musicians to date, mainly classical players. The band has spent the better part of the year working feverishly on their upcoming two albums which are due for release in March and September 2010.

CAULDRON: \'Chained Up In Chains\' Video Released

"Chained Up In Chains", the new video from the Canadian traditional metal act CAULDRON, can be viewed below. Shot during the recently completed "Waste The World" tour, the clip features the band doing what it does best — playing balls-to-the-wall traditional metal and acting like rock stars both on stage and off.

CAULDRON has announced a headlining tour of Canada in March. Frontman/bassist Jason Decay comments: "We can't wait to get back out to the eastern part of Canada and pound some metal with the 'true' French and maritime bangers. Canada has always been really good for us, especially out east and the far west, so we're really excited to be returning to the east coast. It's been over two years since we were last out to the maritimes, so we're really looking forward to it!"

DEMON HUNTER: \'The World Is A Thorn\' Cover Artwork Unveiled

Seattle-based Christian metallers DEMON HUNTER will release their new album, "The World Is A Thorn", on March 9. The band's fifth album follows the landmark documentary "45 Days", last year's "Live In Nashville" collection and a catalog of landmark releases that have made the band one of the most important in the genre.

"The World Is A Thorn" was produced by the band's longtime collaborator Aaron Sprinkle (ACCEPTANCE, ANBERLIN, THE ALMOST) and mixed by powerhouse producer Jason Suecof (ALL THAT REMAINS, TRIVIUM). It's a pairing emblematic of how skillfully DEMON HUNTER has always blended metallic might with melody.

GALAR: New Song Available For Streaming

Norwegian black-folk metallers GALAR are streaming the track "Ván" on their MySpace page. The song is a foretaste of the band's forthcoming album, "Til Alle Heimsens Endar", which is scheduled for release on March 1 via Dark Essence Records. GALAR's sophomore album features eight tracks which delve into ancient history of the band's homeland. The title of the album itself means "until the ends of all worlds" and is taken from Snorri Sturluson's "Heimskringla", which was originally written around 1230 in Old Norse and is the best known of all the sagas that recount the history of the Norwegian Kings of old. Written by Jorge "Blutaar" Scholz, the lyrics to "Til Alle Heimsens Endar" are all in Norwegian, and the band has provided introductory notes in English, together with an explanation of each track.

Another member of the thriving Bergen music scene, and with a permanent two-man lineup of M. Kristiansen on screams, guitars and bass and A. B. Lauritzen on clean vocals, bassoon and grand piano, GALAR has drafted in a set of contributors to the album that draws on notable artists from a variety of musical disciplines, including Phobos (GRAVDAL, AETERNUS, MALSAIN) on drums, Ricardo Odriozola on first and second violins, Hans Gunnar Hagen on viola, Siri Hilmen on cello, Morten Nome on double bass, and Cecile Langlie on female vox. It is GALAR's ability to mix blast beats and grim vocals with haunting melodies played on atypical instruments which enables the band to create an atmosphere with their music that is redolent of both traditional folk and the extremes of black metal.

SLASH Featured On Remix Of THE WHO\'s \'My Generation\'

Legendary guitarist Slash (VELVET REVOLVER, GUNS N' ROSES) is featured on a remix of THE WHO's "My Generation", which is being released to raise money for Haitian earthquake relief.

THE BLACK EYED PEAS' will.i.am tells Billboard.com that he was commissioned to remix the iconic 1965 rock anthem, which will air during the Super Bowl XLIV broadcast on Feb. 7 — where THE WHO is performing at halftime — and then go on sale via iTunes. "It's THE WHO, their song, and then I altered the lyric to fit my generation now and then have Slash on it," will.i.am says. "It was awesome. I loved that song way before this even came up, and talking to Pete Townshend on the phone is like, 'What?! I'm talking to Pete Townshend on the phone?!' That was awesome, being able to just hear their advice and everything. Those guys are just awesome."

THRESHOLD Covers MUSE On New Digital Single

British progressive metallers THRESHOLD will release a brand new digital single, a cover of the MUSE song "Supermassive Black Hole", this Friday, January 29. The cover art can be viewed below.

Commented Richard West: "'Supermassive Black Hole' was such a huge hit for MUSE, it's become a modern classic and it's still in the top ten of the U.K. rock charts after 150 weeks!

"I hope MUSE enjoy THRESHOLD's reworking of their song; we've stayed fairly true to the original but with some added THRESHOLD heaviness."

THRESHOLD will also reissue its latest effort, "Dead Reckoning", including instrumental versions of all songs of the album as a bonus. The digital release of the package is scheduled for mid-February.

West states: "We often get requests from fans wanting access to instrumental versions of our songs, so after seeing bands like NIGHTWISH and MASTODON release extended versions of their albums with instrumentals included, it seemed logical for THRESHOLD to do the same with 'Dead Reckoning'. AC/DC\'s Music To Be Featured In \'Iron Man 2\'

Through a unique collaboration between Marvel Studios and Columbia Records, AC/DC's music will be featured in Marvel Studios' "Iron Man 2", the sequel to the 2008 blockbuster film. In addition, Columbia Records will release the album "AC/DC: Iron Man 2" on Monday, April 19, 2010. "AC/DC: Iron Man 2" features 15 classic AC/DC songs selected from ten of the band's studio albums, ranging from 1976 to 2008. The complete track listing can be found below.

Pre-orders begin today, January 26 at Walmart.com for the "AC/DC: Iron Man 2" CD and at Amazon.com for a deluxe version of "AC/DC: Iron Man 2" CD+DVD and two LP vinyl packages. The film opens internationally beginning on April 28, 2010. In the U.S., the film will be distributed by Paramount Pictures and is scheduled for release on May 7, 2010.

The debut video from "AC/DC: Iron Man 2" is the AC/DC's classic album cut "Shoot To Thrill", which was filmed live last month in Buenos Aires during the band's highly acclaimed Black Ice World Tour, the second-highest-grossing world tour of 2009 according to concert industry trade publication Pollstar. The video also incorporates exclusive footage from "Iron Man 2" and debuts today worldwide.

"Shoot To Thrill" was originally recorded for the band's 50-million selling album "Back In Black", one of the best-selling albums of all time.
