Original KISS members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss reunited on stage last night (Friday, May 27) at this year's Creatures Fest at Nashville's Sonesta Nashville Airport Hotel. The two legendary rockers performed two early KISS classics during Frehley's set, "Hard Luck Woman" and "Strange Ways", both featuring Criss on lead vocals.
Back in March, Creatures Fest promoter Neil Davis said that Criss and Frehley were "excited" about performing together at Creatures Fest. "They talked, and they just thought that what would be great for the fans, for all of us, is if they got together and played some songs during Ace's set," he said.
Also scheduled to appear at this year's Creatures Fest are former KISS guitarists Bruce Kulick and Vinnie Vincent.
Vincent is scheduled to perform on night two of Creatures Fest, while Kulick will close out the event on Sunday, May 29. The festival will also feature performances by QUIET RIOT, ENUFF Z'NUFF, VIXEN, John Corabi, RETURN OF THE COMET and PRETTY BOY FLOYD, among others.
Criss first left KISS in 1980. Since then he's worked with other bands and released solo albums. He teamed up with KISS again for a reunion tour in the 1990s and most recently in 2004. He was replaced by Eric Singer.
In addition to playing drums in KISS, Peter also provided lead vocals for a number the band's most popular and memorable songs, including "Beth", "Black Diamond" and "Hard Luck Woman".
Criss, who was known as "Catman," released his last solo CD, titled "One For All", in 2007. Peter produced the album himself for the first time, and was joined by guest musicians that included keyboardist Paul Shaffer and bassist Will Lee of "Late Night With David Letterman". The album featured a range of styles, from rock and jazz to blues and Broadway, and included covers of "What A Difference A Day Makes" and "Send In The Clowns".
Criss played what was being billed as his final U.S. concert in June 2017 at the Cutting Room in New York City.
Frehley, a founding member of KISS, recently said that he is up for a reunion of the original band, but only if the price is right. During an appearance on SiriusXM's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk", Frehley stated about the chances of him playing with his former bandmates: "Anything's possible — I've always said that. That's the first question so many people have asked me over the years: 'Would you ever consider doing a KISS reunion?' I said, 'I never closed the door on anything.' If the money's right and it's presented to me in the right way, anything can happen.
"I'm on good terms with Paul [Stanley, guitar/vocals] and Gene [Simmons, bass/vocals], which is nice, because we created something really special in the early '70s that has outlasted so many other bands. And God bless 'em. They're still doing it; I'm still doing it. Peter is still around. I'm not quite sure why Peter hadn't toured over the years as much as I have, but it is what it is."
I've got Ace Frehley
I've got Peter Criss
Waiting there for me… yes I do.
Original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley made a surprise, unrehearsed appearance at the poolside acoustic show at this year's Creatures Fest, which is taking place May 27-29 at Nashville's Sonesta Nashville Airport Hotel. Joining Ace for the performance were TRIXTER's Steve Brown and SISTERS DOLL's Brennan Mileto.
Also scheduled to appear at this year's Creatures Fest are original KISS drummer Peter Criss and former KISS guitarists Bruce Kulick and Vinnie Vincent.
According to Creatures Fest promoter Neil Davis, Criss will join Frehley on stage during the guitarist's May 27 set to play a few tracks.

Frehley's latest release was "Origins Vol. 2", the sequel to his 2016 collection of cover songs that inspired the former KISS guitarist.
"Origins Vol. 2" featured cover versions of THE BEATLES' "I'm Down", DEEP PURPLE's "Space Truckin'", LED ZEPPELIN's "Good Times Bad Times", THE ROLLING STONES' "Jumpin' Jack Flash", THE KINKS' "Lola" and THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE's "Manic Depression", among others. A cover of the 1975 KISS tune "She" also appeared as a bonus track. Guests on the set included CHEAP TRICK's Robin Zander, Lita Ford and former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick.
KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons co-wrote two tracks on Ace's latest all-original album "Spaceman", which was released in October 2018 via eOne.

Last December, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE frontman Matt Tuck spoke to NME about the fate of the six songs which were recorded during the sessions for the band's recently released self-titled album but were left off the final track listing. Asked if the unreleased material follows in the same direction as "Bullet For My Valentine", Tuck said: "They're part of the same writing and recording process. Some of them are quite different and unique. We didn't want wanna put them on 'cause they were curvebally. But they were curvebally enough to have a spotlight on 'em post-album. We wanted the album to be a really solid, cohesive body of work from front to back and we didn't wanna throw too many creative curveballs in the album. We thought it was actually better to keep them off for standalone singles post-record and maybe have some kind of really crazy EP maybe at the end of the cycle, just so people can hear them, so they get the light of day. But, yeah, they're heavy, they're interesting, they're pushing boundaries and they're super exciting."
As for whether he thinks BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE's next album will be a mixture of 2018's "Gravity" — which he had previously described as "probably our most mellow/experimental record" — and the self-titled LP, Tuck said: "It really depends. In a year's, two years' time, whenever we decide to kind of get involved with that, we're just gonna do what we do — we're gonna see what comes out, what feels natural, what makes us happy, what makes us scared, what makes us motivated. And coming off the back of 'Gravity' and this album, we're just gonna that whole process of confidence and no-fear attitude into the writing process, and as soon as we start smiling and high-fiving, that's when we'll know we're on the right track."
"Bullet For My Valentine" arrived in November via via Spinefarm/Search & Destroy. The LP was written beginning in September 2019 with longtime producer Carl Bown, who co-produced the band's 2015 album, "Venom", and produced and mixed "Gravity".
"Gravity" saw BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE's catalog surpass one billion streams in the U.S. That accomplishment solidified BULLET's status as one of the most elite bands in the hard rock scene.
On the heels of the announcement in March that he is releasing a collection of Frank Sinatra covers to support NDSS (National Down Syndrome Society), Grammy Award winning musician, producer, author and founding member of the hard rock bands Alter Bridge, Creed and Tremonti, Mark Tremonti is releasing another music video from his Tremonti Sings Sinatra album.
Check out the video for his take on "My Way" below.
Tremonti Sings Sinatra - Mark’s most-ambitious and challenging project to date – was released on May 27th. Mark has partnered with National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) through his new charity initiative called Take A Chance For Charity and proceeds from the album will go to support NDSS and the work they do to advocate for and support individuals with Down syndrome and their families. Mark and his family were blessed to welcome their first daughter Stella in March 2021 – who was born with Down syndrome – and the idea for the project was born. A video sharing the very personal story of Take A Chance For Charity and behind-the-scenes clips can be seen below:
Mark Tremonti has come together with surviving members of Frank Sinatra's orchestra, creating new takes on some of the classics and some deeper cuts from Frank's catalog. From the opening horns and piano of “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” to final vocal outro of “All Or Nothing At All,” Mark Tremonti showcases the signature vocal approach and exemplary musicianship that made Sinatra’s work timeless. To see his vision through, Mark reached out to Frank Sinatra’s musical director Mike Smith who collected as many remaining members as possible of Frank’s touring band to record the music for Tremonti Sings Sinatra. Popular standards like “I’ve Got The World On A String,” “My Way” and “That’s Life” find new life in the hands of these incredible musicians. Mark Tremonti – known for his guitar work that has won him countless accolades – leaves the instrument behind and just sings on the 14-track album. The artwork on the album cover is an original painting that Tremonti created especially for this project. A recently announced live performance of Tremonti Sings Sinatra with members of Frank’s orchestra on May 14th in Orlando, FL at The Abbey sold out in days.
Tremonti Sings Sinatra tracklisting:

Take A Chance For Charity is a new charity focused on giving artists / actors / athletes / anyone with a platform the ability to get out of their comfort zone. The idea is to have people get out of the genre they are known for to raise funds / awareness for the charity of their choice. We want people to have the most fun they ever had while raising money for charity. An actor can sing, an athlete can dance, a musician can perform a song out of their musical genre - any artistic interpretation. This gives participants the ability to do something out of the ordinary - in fact extraordinary - all in the name of charity. Tremonti Sings Sinatra will be the first release for the cause, the recipient being NDSS.
The National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) is the leading human rights organisation for all individuals with Down syndrome. NDSS envisions a world in which all people with Down syndrome have the opportunity to enhance their quality of life, realise their life aspirations, and become valued members of welcoming communities. Founded in 1979, NDSS supports and advocates for the Down syndrome community by focusing on three key areas of programming: Resources & Support, Policy & Advocacy, and Community Engagement. Within these focus areas NDSS engages in various activities, events, and programs on topics that are critical to our community such as federal and state advocacy and public policy, health and wellness, education, and employment. NDSS creates resources to support individuals with Down syndrome, their families, and caregivers across the lifespan and hosts awareness and engagement events throughout the country including the National Buddy Walk® Program, the Times Square Video presentation and New York City Buddy Walk®, Racing for 3.21 on World Down Syndrome Day, Run for 3.21, DC Golf Outing, the annual NDSS Gala & Auction, and various other events. Some quotes about Tremonti Sings Sinatra:
“Mark did a fantastic job on this record, his voice and take on the tunes are amazing!” - Hank Cattaneo (Frank Sinatra - Duets Producer)
“Mark's take on Sinatra is nothing short of uncanny. I could never have expected one of my fave metal guitarists to do such faithful renditions of Sinatra classics. Not only instrumentally, but vocally! & these recordings are for a cause near & dear to my heart; I was very close to an uncle who had Down Syndrome when I was growing up. I fully appreciate & support Mark's commitment to NDSS.” – Slash (Guns N Roses)
“Holy Shit, I knew Mark was a ripping guitar player, but no way did I ever have a notion that he had golden pipes as well!!! Totally blown away, totally into it, let's hear more Mark!!!” - Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
“When Mark first played me a track from this project my jaw dropped. Gave me chills! This is a side of Mark's voice that people need to hear and I’m certain they will be just as blown away as I was." - Chris Daughtry (Daughtry)
“Wow! I am absolutely blown away by Mark’s performance on this album!! He delivers the songs authentically, embodying all that is Frank but giving us a glimpse of his own personality as well. I love the arrangements and the fact that some of Frank’s original band members contributed to these tracks. Honestly, I’ve known Mark for a long time and know he is super talented but had no idea he was capable of channelling Old' Blue Eyes like that! Just absolutely beautifully done and what makes everything even that much more touching is the cause. I bet Mark’s daughter Stella was in his heart during every step of the recording processes. Incredible!” - John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
“Once again Mark Tremonti never ceases to amaze me. These renditions of some of the most beloved Sinatra tunes, are so eloquently done that it is remarkable. And what a beautiful gift to the NDSS. Much love, respect, and success to this incredible project.” – Brent Smith (Shinedown)
Finnish cello-rock quartet, Apocalyptica, have released the video below, featuring their performance of "Shadowmaker" at Graspop Metal Meeting 2016, featuring vocalist Franky Perez.
Apocalyptica partnered up with some of the biggest names in rock music to deliver their new single, “I’ll Get Through It”. The song, written for the band by American award-winning songwriter Diane Warren, features Franky Perez – guest vocalist in Apocalyptica’s 2015 record Shadowmaker – as well as Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath on bass guitar. The track can be found on all digital streaming platforms. Buy/stream here, and watch the official music video below.
The song was born out of a visit Geezer & Franky paid to their friend Diane, who had already written the track “Not Strong Enough” for Apocalyptica, included in their 2010 record 7th Symphony. “Franky & I were visiting my friend, Diane Warren, at her studio. She played us this song, saying that she thought it would work well with Frankie’s voice. He gave it a try on the spot. We loved it. Franky then suggested sending it to Apocalyptica. They loved it, and the rest is history,” comments Geezer.
Franky Perez shares the same feeling of enthusiasm upon hearing the track for the first time – “I knew this song was special from the moment Diane Warren played it for Geezer and me. So much so, that I framed the lyrics from the session the very next day. They have been hanging on my wall ever since. This song speaks to me lyrically which made for an honest performance. Musically, there is no better collaboration than Geezer and Apocalyptica to do the song the justice it deserves. I feel very fortunate to be a part of it.”
“I’ll Get Through It” marks the first collaboration between Apocalyptica and Franky Perez since he sang on Shadowmaker, which adds to the excitement for the members of Apocalyptica, according to Perttu Kivilaakso: “We are more than thrilled working with our great and talented friend Franky Perez again! It’s been a while since our previous collaborations in Shadowmaker- album and tour, and we are also highly awaiting for getting back on road with him this April all across the States!”
Perttu also adds, about the song – “’I’ll Get Through It’ – is a meaningful and beautiful song by an incredible songwriter Diane Warren, with whom we’ve also had the pleasure of working with before. We can’t wait for you to hear the final result… falling in love again with Franky’s sensual performance, Geezer’s earthshakingly powerful bass, and our wistfully haunting cellos, among the inevitable presence of all the rhythms and groove!”
“We hope you’ll enjoy the track as much as we do! Gonna be a blast performing it also live!”
Apocalyptica will return to North America in September with direct support from Leprous, and opening act Wheel.

FOZZY singer Chris Jericho's 1980s KISS cover band KUARANTINE was joined by former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick on stage during its performance on Saturday (May 28) at this year's Creatures Fest, which is taking place at Nashville's Sonesta Nashville Airport Hotel. Fan-filmed video can be seen below.
In 2020, Jericho joined forces with TRIXTER/FOZZY bassist P.J. Farley, guitarist Joe McGinness and drummer Kent Slucher to form KUARANTINE. The band's latest single, a version of "Silver Spoon", which originally appeared on KISS's 1989 album "Hot In The Shade", was released on Friday (May 27). The new track, available via Madison Records with distribution by The Orchard, was the second most added song this week on the Billboard Rock Indicator chart and marks the fourth release from KUARANTINE, which has been entertaining fans with its versions of KISS rarities and some good ol' fashioned rock music.
"I'm pleasantly surprised as to how much attention and buzz KUARANTINE has achieved since we released our first song only a few years ago," shared Jericho. "Record companies…and groupies…have been sliding into our DMs daily with requests, offers, endorsements, and the question, 'What's the next track gonna be?'. Well, the time has come to unleash 'Silver Spoon' and turn the rock 'n' roll world into a damn zoo. Let us see all the animals!"
KUARANTINE's version of "Silver Spoon" has even drawn praise from KISS frontman Paul Stanley, who said: "My favorite song on 'Hot In The Shade' by far. Sounds great… well done!"
KUARANTINE first debuted in May 2020 with the release of "No No No", which reached No. 25 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. The band has since issued its versions of "Heart Of Chrome", featuring Kulick, and "Love's A Deadly Weapon", amassing nearly half a million total views on their videos on YouTube and close to 200,000 total streams across DSPs.
KUARANTINE — Jericho, Slucher, McGinness, Farley and second guitarist Carlos "Charlie Parra" Enrique Parra Del Riego Campoverde — will perform on Chris Jericho's Rock 'N' Wrestling Rager At Sea: Four Leaf Clover, a four-night cruise from Miami to the Bahamas taking place February 2-6, 2023.
Jericho has surrounded himself with a group of top-notch touring musicians for KUARANTINE. Slucher has been the powerhouse behind the kit for country music sensation Luke Bryan for the past 14 years, from small clubs to headlining stadiums and amphitheaters. McGinness is a rising country singer/guitarist, who has shared the stage with artists such as OLD DOMINION, FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE and Granger Smith, and is also a member of KLASSIK '78, a digital tribute to '70s KISS. Farley rose to fame in the New Jersey-based gold-selling rock band TRIXTER, which toured with KISS, POISON and SCORPIONS, before writing and recording two solo albums and eventually joining FOZZY in 2020. Newest bandmember Parra, who hails from Lima, Peru, is a global rock guitar YouTube sensation, amassing close to a million followers and over 176 million views on his channel.

In 1989, shortly after the release of their third album, Street Ready, the legendary Leatherwolf and their "Triple Axe Attack" of Geoffrey Gayer, Michael Olivieri, and Carey Howe sensed that their rhythm section was becoming indifferent towards the band. The decision was taken by the trio to start afresh and after acquiring the dynamic duo of Marco Forcone on drums and Patrick Guyton on bass, continued to work and perform as Leatherwolf until legal issues arose with a former bandmate over the name.
This rift caused the quintet to seek out a new moniker and feel the need to throw the long-ball into the end zone, the re-birth of Leatherwolf as Hail Mary was used as the launchpad to thrust the band into a new musical direction. With fists clenched and a relentless “take no prisoners” attitude, Hail Mary, would either live triumphantly or leave a hell of a scar trying.
Calling Huntington Beach, California home, Hail Mary, saw the raw energy from a lot of the new bands coming through as a refreshing change to the bombastic glitter of the eighties, but this outfit also had another weapon in their armory - a rabid existing fanbase. In fact, when the line-up of Leatherwolf that would go on to become Hail Mary booked their ‘return’ performance, the show at the Marquee Club in Westminster, California would break records.
Having put out mountains of fliers for the show with just the venue, date, and a line-up photo, but no actual band name, when Geoffrey, Michael, Carey, Marco, and Patrick arrived on the day of the gig, they were shocked to see that the line to get in was wrapped completely around the building, five people deep. And that was only those who couldn't gain entry due to the sold-out venue already being overfilled to capacity. Amazingly, the amassed throng outside stayed to listen through the walls, and that night The Marquee ended up shattering its all-time attendance record, which had formerly been held by Skid Row.
With a fearsome live reputation, Hail Mary would regularly delight its fans at venues such as the world-famous Roxy Theatre, The Troubadour, Madame Wong’s, The Whisky a Go-Go, and of course The Marquee, which was virtually their second home. When not thrilling audiences, rehearsing, or keeping the bar staff at The Marquee on their toes, Hail Mary, could, of course, be found with a bucket of wallpaper paste as they plastered fliers for their upcoming shows all over town. And with the band highly respected throughout Orange County, which had long supported Leatherwolf, it was only a matter of time before they became regulars on KNAC Radio and local TV. With magazines such as BAM, Screamer, and RAW all getting behind them, all Hail Mary lacked to take them over the top was that ever-elusive record deal.
With a dozen A&R reps being regular at their shows, the five-piece entered talks and even went into pre-production with both Epic Records and MCA. But with grunge acts becoming more and more prevalent on every label’s roster, both pulled the plug on Hail Mary halfway through recording. The band did, however, track multiple pro demos, including a development deal with Epic Records alongside producer Tom Fletcher and ‘E’ from For the Record. However, the breakthrough never did quite materialize in the way their music was deserved and the core guitar trio of the band instead reformed the much-loved Leatherwolf in 1999.
Looking back now it could be said that Hail Mary was ahead of its time and maybe that explains why it’s taken the best part of thirty years for this outstanding album to see the light of day.
On May 29th, actor and Hollywood Vampires guitarist Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance at Jeff Beck's show in Sheffield, England, taking a break from the media circus surrounding his ongoing court case against his ex-wife, Amber Heard. Depp and Beck performed their cover of John Lennon's "Isolation", which they recorded in 2020, as well as the Jimi Hendrix classic "Little Wing" and Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On".
Fan-filmed clips are available below.
Hollywood Vampires was formed in 2012 by shock rock legend Alice Cooper, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, and Johnny Depp. The band name derives from The Hollywood Vampires, a celebrity drinking club formed by Cooper in the '70s, which included John Lennon and Ringo Starr of The Beatles, Harry Nilsson, Keith Moon of The Who, and Micky Dolenz of The Monkees. Touring members include or have included Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum of Guns N' Roses fame, as well as Robert DeLeo from Stone Temple Pilots.
The band has released two studio albums featuring guest appearances by Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, Joe Walsh, Zak Starkey and Christopher Lee, among others.
Check out the band's rendition of David Bowie's "Heroes" with Depp on lead vocals below.
Time for Swedes Captain Black Beard to start unveiling what will be their next studio album. The first digital single teasing the record is “Flamenco”, and it pays homage to the “disco-AOR” tag that stuck with the band lately.
“When we read reviews of our album Sonic Forces, the term 'Disco AOR' was used to describe our music,” the band comments. “We hadn't heard this before but kinda liked it and this song was written with that in mind. The energy and the pacing of the song make it the perfect album opener, show opener, and of course... the first single.”
"We're absolutely fired up about signing to Mighty Music," the band comments. "Our new album is a beast waiting to be unleashed. Is the world ready? Who knows... but Captain Black Beard is back on a new mission and with our mighty collaborators, success shall come our way."

“This video was done while we were recording the song,” states lead singer Coopa. “We wanted a more home video feel. A retrospective moment of when it took place. So we could look back and enjoy that memory.”
"This album is a reflection on life. It’s a contemplation of where I am in this world and what my place is in it." - Coopa, lead singer
"Sygnal To Noise is coming on like a nuclear weapon, destroying everything in their path. This is a band to look out for, and yes, they are the Bomb!" - Jeffrey A. Swanson / President, Dark Star Records
Sygnal To Noise, a melodic hard rock band, was founded in February of 2013 by frontman, Coopa, a singer/songwriter and veteran of the New England music scene. Their mission is to help bring rock ‘n’ roll to modern fans and back to its former glory on mainstream radio once again.
Sygnal To Noise has been greatly inspired and influenced by bands like Queen, KISS, Alice Cooper and David Bowie, for their showmanship and visuals with a blend of such bands as Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam for their songwriting and vocal styles.
Having the perfect blend of creativity and diverse talent; Breanne (Breezy) Powell on bass, Christopher Skehan on guitar, Dave Pike on guitar and Nick Coffin on drums; and their combined creative process, passion and vision is what pushes their focus and drive for the future of rock ‘n’ roll.
The band has a large interactive visual live performance, with visual art, as well as cameras and stage effects, to help immerse the audience into the music. This combination creates a more fulfilling visual and audio live experience.
Founder and frontman, Coopa's personal inspiration came from rock ‘n’ roll greats such as Queen, KISS, Bowie, Prince, Motley Crue, and Marilyn Manson for their visual showmanship as well as many of the great bands of the ‘90s era, for their song writing. Coopa honed his guitar skills over the years which made him a well-rounded musician and songwriter you hear today.

Professionally filmed video of METALLICA performing the song "For Whom The Bell Tolls" on May 10 at Estádio Do Morumbi in São Paulo, Brazil can be seen below.
São Paulo was the fifth stop on METALLICA's South American tour, which kicked off on April 27 in Santiago, Chile.
METALLICA played its first concert of 2022 on February 25 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. The show, which was reportedly attended by 60,000 fans, featured support from GRETA VAN FLEET and ICE NINE KILLS.
The Las Vegas show took place more than two months after METALLICA's two 40th-anniversary concerts at Chase Center in San Francisco, California which featured different setlists. They were part of METALLICA's "San Francisco Takeover", a four-day citywide celebration of the band's 40th anniversary that also included a film festival, photo exhibit and curated lineup of smaller venue shows featuring other acts.
In February, METALLICA announced it will perform only two summer stadium shows in 2022: Highmark Stadium in Buffalo, New York on August 11, and PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 14. Both shows will feature special guests GRETA VAN FLEET and ICE NINE KILLS.
METALLICA previously played at Highmark Stadium on July 25, 1992, and Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium on July 26, 1992.
Later this month, METALLICA will perform at the BottleRock festival in Napa on May 27 and Boston Calling on May 29. The band also has a number of European dates scheduled for June and July.
Formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield, METALLICA has become one of the most influential and successful rock bands in history, having sold nearly 120 million albums worldwide and generating more than 15 billion streams while playing to millions of fans on all seven continents. The band's several multi-platinum albums include "Kill 'Em All", "Ride The Lightning", "Master Of Puppets", "… And Justice For All", "Metallica" (commonly referred to as The Black Album),"Load", "Reload", "St. Anger", "Death Magnetic" and "Hardwired... To Self-Destruct", released in November 2016 and charting at No. 1 in 32 countries.
METALLICA's awards and accolades include nine Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, multiple MTV Video Music Awards, and its 2009 induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. In June of 2018, the band was awarded one of the most prestigious musical honors in the world: Sweden's Polar Music Prize.
Finnish heavy metal act, Oceanhoarse, have unleashed their brand new single, "Heads Will Roll", onto the world. The single comes along with a music video, that you can watch below. Stream the track here.
Ben Varon comments: "We've been working on 'Heads Will Roll' for a few years, as it took a while for us to find the right groove for it. But we've believed in the song's potential from the beginning, so we kept at it. Finally, with the help of producer Kari Huikuri, we managed to capture the song as we feel it should be, while playing it live in the studio. No click tracks, just four musicians locking in and going for it. I think that energy shows through the end result!"
He continues: "Lyrically, the song is another take on one of my 'favorite' subjects, which is corruption, tyranny and overall inhuman behaviour. Unfortunately, this song feels more relevant than ever right now..."
Having released their debut studio album Dead Reckoning in 2021 via Noble Demon, followed by multiple single releases, Oceanhoarse like to stay busy and might be one of the most remarkable and hard working newcomers out there right now. The band's explosive mix of crushing riffs as well as intense and groovy arrangements not only brought the band on tour with Swedish progressive metal masters Soon recently, but also praise from fans and press alike.
Los Angeles-based rock outfit, Budderside, beg to find the truth of life and its meaning with their new single, “The Truth”, out today across all digital streaming platforms. Stream/download it here.
Vocalist, songwriter and founding member Patrick Stone seeks out these answers in the song’s music video filmed at a valley in Santa Barbara nearby where his Mother used to live. Watch “The Truth” music video, directed by Vicente Codero, below.
Stone elaborated on the inspiration for “The Truth” stating: “My mother’s home use to sit at the top of the valley where we filmed the video in Santa Barbara. I’ve seen some of the most beautiful flowers and sunsets in my life there and had always thought it would be an amazing place to shoot. I remember sitting on her porch, it was like a theatre to watch God paint every day and night. It’s the exact opposite of where you’d expect to see this song explained. The truth is-- no pun intended--that this song is so dark it’s dangerous to focus on its lesson. Hopefully, sharing it this way will allow listeners to lean into the grove and dual guitar solo more than its honest lyrics. For once, I’m actually happy to avoid explaining and more devoted to distracting with the visuals. It had to be daunting somehow, though, and I got fixated on the rapture and how insane that would be to see. Religious beliefs are not our brand, but what lies beyond the stars and the secrets we keep played out well into this story.”
Read a Q&A below with Stone on new music, how the band’s name was formed and on how other rock bands keep borrowing the band’s musicians.
Q: Can you share how Budderside’s new album compares to past releases? What inspired or led to those artistic/style changes and why?
Stone: “It’s finally the music I’ve always wanted Budderside to be. Not that my heart and soul isn’t in everything that came before, but the whole band being as talented as they are really makes a difference in the writing, the music and the vibe. I also blame our entertainment lawyer and close friend, Eric German. He had the balls to tell us what wasn’t working and wasn’t afraid to be completely blunt. I’ve always respected Eric and the artists he works with and instead of letting his advice break me, it set me on fire.”
Q: You worked with producer Matt Good on the new album who’s worked with a lot of mainstream radio rock acts including Asking Alexandria and Hollywood Undead. Can you share how he may have added to developing Budderside’s overall sound on the album? What did he bring to the table that you felt differed from past producers?
Stone: “Eric German introduced us to Matt and Budderside quickly became his band, too. He demands greatness and constantly challenged us with styles and sounds we were uncomfortable with. It was exactly what we needed. Going in, I was completely hopeful a metamorphosis would happen, and it did. He’s hands-on about every detail and we don’t move forward until we all agree it’s perfect. We landed in a very unique and radical space with the new sound.
“His style is what makes him stand out from the rest. Matt is producing what hasn’t been done before. He’s the leader in his genre if you ask me. I love the bands he’s worked with, and you can tell the difference in the songs they’ve recorded with him and those without. He brings that special energy. Something about me changed and you can hear it in the new music. My preconceived notions about vocals dissolved from technique to truth. I was like a guitar being plugged into an amp for the first time. Everything was on 11. Putting Matt Good’s name on ours is one of our proudest achievements.”
Q: What inspired you to write “The Truth”?
Stone: “The truth. Pun intended this time. What the f*ck does this life mean? What are we doing here? What happens next? I’m suffering. Life seems to be one struggle on top of another and I don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. I’m constantly afraid the next thing is going to push me over the edge. Have I lost sight of who I am? My bandmates believe in me and writing this song together helped me see I’m not alone. We all want to know. Give me the truth! Killing ourselves to mean something to someone, for something.”
Q: If you had the chance to be abducted by a UFO, would you take the plunge? Why or why not? If so, what truths would you expect to find from such an experience?
Stone: “Definitely. I’d expect to find exactly that, ‘the truth.’ To know the truth and to unlock the great mystery would be extremely exciting and yet bring abundant peace.”
Q: This has got to be your most asked question but you’ve shared different answers in previous interviews—for once and for all, will you tell us what the name ‘Budderside’ means and why you chose it for the band?
Stone: “There is no exact answer. What does life mean? Answer that and you’ve described its definition. How about the “F” word? Use Budderside like you use that word and you get it. If you can explain it, you ain’t got it! Narrow minded people don’t get it. Lemmy got it and that was good enough for me. The people that understand me and accept me for who I am are behind the name. To challenge that is a fight you will lose. You could say Gandhi or Einstein are strange rolling off the tongue, but not once you understand what they stood for. Once you understand us, you’ll see it and say it differently, like we do. It’s the name of a very meaningful rock band.”
Q: When people see/hear the name Budderside, what do you think they think the band sounds like? What do you want them to think?
Stone: “I would expect them to be very curious. When they hear it, I want them to be totally blown away.”
Q: Knowing that you handpicked the members of the band, how does it feel now that other large rock bands have been ‘borrowing’ them for tours, etc?
Stone: “Dorothy thanked me backstage last night for letting her ‘borrow Sam’ for her recent tour. I’m sure she knows she didn’t have to say that, but she did anyways and made me feel really good about it. I love her talent and her songs, and she deserves the very best. She knows that’s exactly what Sam is. I’m really proud to be a part of Budderside. Budderside is Sam’s band just as Budderside is Logan’s band, who’s opening for Shinedown in arenas every night with Diamante currently… and that’s where we belong. Five fingers of a hand clawing its way into the life we deserve, together.”
“The Truth” is one of the many highlights on the band’s upcoming and as-yet-untitled album. Due this fall via oneRPM, it was recorded with producer Matt Good (Asking Alexandria, Hollywood Undead). “The Truth” follows the devilish single “Never Worth It”. Previously released singles include the mental health awareness oriented “Too Far,” the self-questioning “Ghostlighting” (and its Scooby Doo-inspired music video) and the album’s debut anthemic track “Voices”.
Budderside is:
Patrick Stone – Vocals
Gabe Maska – Bass
Jeff Dewbray – Drums
Sam Koltun – Guitars
Logan Nikolic – Guitars
Florida death metal veterans DEICIDE played their second show with new guitarist Taylor Nordberg (THE ABSENCE, INHUMAN CONDITION) last night (Sunday, May 29) at the Maryland Deathfest in Baltimore, Maryland. Fan-filmed video of the concert can be seen below.
Nordberg made his live debut with DEICIDE a week earlier, on May 21, at the Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Three months ago, Nordberg spoke about how he landed the DEICIDE gig in an interview with "The Zach Moonshine Show". He said: "In 2019, my band THE ABSENCE toured with DEICIDE in the U.S. And we got to know the guys and got along really well. And I actually found out that Glen [Benton, DEICIDE frontman] lives, like, two streets over from Jeramie [Kling, THE ABSENCE drummer] and I, where we live. So Jeramie and Glen became good buddies and they ride bikes all the times. It's a funny little thing, thinking about that. But long story short, [previous DEICIDE guitarist] Chris [Cannella], I believe he's the head of A&R at Dean Guitars so he's focusing on that for right now. I heard that they needed a guitar player, so I learned a couple of songs, made a couple of videos, and Glen saw 'em and liked what he saw. So we had a couple of practices, and bing bang boom, here we are."
Cannella amicably left DEICIDE in January after a three-year run.
When Benton first announced Nordberg's addition to DEICIDE, he said in a statement: "We are pleased to announce and welcome Taylor Nordberg to the DEICIDE family! An amazing and accomplished guitarist who takes our sound to the next level and brings a profound level of professionalism that completes and compliments the DEICIDE machine!"
Cannella said in a separate statement: "Yes, it is true. I am no longer in DEICIDE. There is no drama and we all kept it quiet as to not lead into drama or speculation.
"I have all the love and respect for Glen, Steve and Kevin. I had so many great times over the last three years I cherish for a lifetime, especially the friendship.
"Cheers to all and thanks for all the love and support. I'm excited for what's to come."
Cannella joined DEICIDE in 2019 following the departure of guitarist Mark English.
English became a member of DEICIDE in 2016 after the exit of longtime guitarist Jack Owen.
In February, Nordberg was asked in an interview with the "Brews N Tunes" podcast if he and his new bandmates have commenced work on the follow-up to 2018's "Overtures Of Blasphemy" album. He responded: "They had started most of the new album before I joined, but since announcing [that we are going to celebrate the 30th anniversary of DEICIDE's sophomore album] 'Legion' [by performing the LP in its entirety], we've kind of shifted gears and we're trying to lock that in and get a set prepped just in the event that a show pops up. But they have most of the new album prepped, and then we're hammering out, ironing out some details with the last couple songs. So hopefully that will be out this year. I don't know any concrete plans on when we're gonna start pre-production or recording or any of that. But hopefully this year. That would be awesome. But the material is sounding killer. It sounds like DEICIDE."
"Overtures Of Blasphemy" was released in September 2018 via Century Media.
Former ANTHRAX singer Neil Turbin has released his acoustic cover version of "Hurt", a song originally written and recorded in 1994 by the American industrial rock band NINE INCH NAILS. The music video for Turbin's version of the track was recorded and filmed on April 12 at Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center in Redondo Beach, California.
Neil commented: "I was familiar with NINE INCH NAILS' 'The Downward Spiral' and eventually the Johnny Cash [version of 'Hurt'] around a decade later which helped shed new focus on Johnny Cash and his brilliant song and video performance.
"My reason for covering the song is having something in common with Trent Reznor besides being a singer songwriter and that is that I have been at the former house of his on Cielo Drive in Benedict Canyon. The feeling and energy I felt while there made the hair on my arms stand on end and gave me chills. I'm not saying that for effect. I just felt some very strong feelings that were not something I normally feel or hardly ever feel. With that being said, I went home that night and started to look up the address since intuitively I felt compelled to try to figure out why I was feeling what I felt. Once I researched it and found out the unbelievable history, I re-discovered this song after some time reviewing related songs. I felt very connected to this brilliant song."
Turbin performed and recorded with ANTHRAX on the original demo recordings and the band's debut album, 1984's "Fistful Of Metal". He wrote the lyrics to all songs on that LP with exception of the cover of Alice Cooper's "I'm Eighteen", and also has writing credits on five of the seven songs on the band's "Armed And Dangerous" EP (1985),as well as two songs on sophomore album "Spreading The Disease" (1985).
ANTHRAX has had a number of vocalists — including Turbin, Joey Belladonna, Dan Nelson and John Bush — over the last four decades, with guitarist Scott Ian and drummer Charlie Benante remaining the sole bandmembers who have appeared on every one of the group's studio albums.
Turbin sang on "Fistful Of Metal" before getting booted and being replaced by Belladonna. Belladonna performed on four ANTHRAX albums, including the fan favorite "Among The Living" (1987) before he himself was fired over creative and stylistic differences. Bush fronted ANTHRAX between 1992 and 2005 but was sidelined when the band reunited with Belladonna for a 20th-anniversary tour. When that collapsed, and relationships disintegrated with next frontman Nelson, Bush returned for a time before Belladonna took the job back in 2010.
DEFTONES frontman Chino Moreno joined GOJIRA on stage last night (Saturday, May 28) during the two bands' joint concert at the Amory in Minneapolis, Minnesota to perform a cover of SEPULTURA's "Territory". Fan-filmed video of his appearance can be seen below.
GOJIRA guitarist/vocalist Joseph Duplantier spoke about SEPULTURA's influence on his band's music in an April 2021 interview with Cuartel Del Metal. At the time, he said: "SEPULTURA is massive in the history of our band, for some reason. I discovered 'Arise' first, and I was pretty blown away — it was so dark and so fast and so technical. It was right after I discovered the band DEATH and MORBID ANGEL, and then SEPULTURA. And I was absolutely blown away by their craft. And then, I had a few bands in high school, and I started to get together with my brother. We were playing at home, sometimes after school, and then we decided to form our own band. We dropped our other bands, got together, and 'Chaos A.D.' came along. And we were absolutely blown away — absolutely blown away. And [it was] easy to play too — it's simple riffs. They stripped down everything to the core… I mean, oh my God. They said it all with this album."
As for what he thinks when people compare GOJIRA's song "Amazonia" to SEPULTURA, Joseph said: "I go, 'Yup.' And it's a compliment, and there is no shame here. And we ripped them off, but we didn't do it on purpose. But we realized it right after. We were, like, 'Oh, that sounds like SEPULTURA. Ahhh, whatever.' It's a tribute to SEPULTURA — how about that? It's about Brazil. It's about the Amazon. It's tribal."
"Amazonia" is taken from GOJIRA's latest album, "Fortitude", which came out in April 2021 via Roadrunner Records. The follow-up to 2016's "Magma" was recorded and produced by Duplantier at Silver Cord Studio — GOJIRA's Ridgewood, Queens, New York headquarters — and mixed by Andy Wallace (NIRVANA, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE).
Chino and his DEFTONES bandmates were indirectly responsible for the name of Max Cavalera's post-SEPULTURA project. Fresh off his December 1996 split with SEPULTURA, Max spent the better part of 1997 trying to assemble a new group while guesting on DEFTONES' song "Headup", which appeared on the Sacramento alt-metallers "Around The Fur" studio album. Cavalera was struggling to find a name for his new act, going as far as to consult with the leader of the Brazilian Xavantes tribe, who played an integral role in shaping SEPULTURA's "Roots" album. Remembering the made-up word "soulfly" from "Headup", Cavalera found the right name for his post-SEPULTURA band, subsequently revealing it in a surprise announcement on live French television in 1997.
