SYMPHONY X Putting Finishing Touches On New Material
North America's progressive metal gods SYMPHONY X are putting the finishing touches on the material for their next studio album, tentatively due mid-2010 via their new record label, Nuclear Blast Records. The band's guitarist, Michael Romeo, tells the SYMPHONY X webmaster, "Technically, we could be done.
"I put together some pre-production mixes for us to listen to, and it's all solid.
"We have over an hour of really good stuff that we really dig; there's more than enough stuff there that we can choose the best songs to go on the CD... but all of the songs are really strong. And there are two almost-done songs that we're going to try to wrap up in the next few days as well. One is shaping up to be 10 minutes plus.
"It's really cool stuff that we gotta use."
Romeo and SYMPHONY X vocalist Russell Allen have started working through lyrics, and the band plans to start tracking in early March.
"I think everyone will like it," Romeo concluded. "It has a little bit of everything."
On November 4, 2008, InsideOut Music released a special 5.1 edition of SYMPHONY X's critically acclaimed album "Paradise Lost". The double-disc package includes a DVD 5.1 mix by Jens Bogren of the entire album as well as two enhanced HD videos for "Set the World on Fire" and "Serpent's Kiss".

AKERCOCKE Guitarist Quits
Guitarist Matt Wilcock has left British extreme metal veterans AKERCOCKE. He says in a statement, "After five years with AKERCOCKE and a lot of good times, it's now time for me to move on. Musically, I'm differing a bit with the natural path that AKERCOCKE's taking, so it's best for me to part ways now. There's no shit between anyone, and I'm thoroughly looking forward to going out with a bang (or blast) on these last four shows [in early March as the support act for DARK FUNERAL]. Full respect to the guys, especially Jason [Mendonça] and Dave [Gray, drums]. I'll be continuing to work with Dave on THE ANTICHRIST IMPERIUM which will be up and running very soon. Also much respect to everyone I've met on the road and at shows etc."
Wilcock and Gray 's new project called THE ANTICHRIST IMPERIUM will have a MySpace page up in the coming month or two, along with audio samples. A summer release for the group's debut album is expected.
THE ANTICHRIST IMPERIUM is a three-piece outfit featuring Nikki from TED MAUL on vocals and bass, Matt on guitar and vocals and David on drums.
AKERCOCKE 's debut DVD, "A Decade of Devil Worship", is scheduled for release later this year. | 0

The bulk of the set will be composed of footage from the 2009 concerts in Switzerland and Atlanta, Georgia, with additional material from Japan, Colombia, Brazil, Germany and Sweden. The band says, "[We] still [have] a long way to go [before completing the DVD], but it will be a killer package, including the first official live CD of PRIMAL FEAR, 'Live In The USA', recorded in Los Angeles, Atlanta and New York." The group adds, "Achim Köhler is already working on the mix of the audio stuff." A European tour in support of the new DVD and live DVD will take place in the fall.

DARK THE SUNS: New Album Title Announced
Jyväskylä, Finland-based melodic metal band DARK THE SUNS has set "Sleepwalking In A Nightmare" as the title of its third album, due this summer via Firebox Records. According to the group, the CD will contain "8-10 songs of melodic Finnish dark metal," including "Wounded By Broken Dreams", "Devoid Of The Sun", "Requiem" and "Walking With An Angel". OZZY OSBOURNE Wins Round 1 Against TONY IOMMI In BLACK SABBATH Name Dispute
According to the New York Post, a Manhattan federal judge ruled yesterday (Thursday, February 25) that Ozzy Osbourne can proceed with his lawsuit against guitarist Tony Iommi over use of the BLACK SABBATH name.
Ozzy filed a lawsuit against Iommi in May 2009, claiming that Iommi illegally took sole ownership of the band's name in a filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Osbourne is suing Iommi for a 50 percent interest in the "Black Sabbath" trademark, along with a portion of Iommi's profits from use of the name.
The Manhattan federal court suit also charges that Osbourne's "signature lead vocals" are largely responsible for the band's "extraordinary success," noting that its popularity plummeted during his absence from 1980 through 1996.
Lawyer Andrew DeVore argued yesterday that Osbourne signed away all his rights to the BLACK SABBATH trademark after he quit the band in 1979.
Osbourne's lawyer, Howard Shire, called that agreement a "red herring" that was "repudiated" when the singer rejoined in 1997 and took over "quality control" of the band's merchandise, tours and recordings.
Ozzy's suit follows one filed by Iommi in December 2008 against Live Nation. In that filing, Iommi claims the concert giant sold merchandise bearing the band's logo, despite the 2006 expiration of a merchandising deal, reportedly worth nearly $80 million. Soon after that agreement concluded, Iommi reclaimed the band's trademark.
Iommi's suit argues Live Nation continued to sell more than 100 items of merchandise featuring the band's likeness, name and logo, despite the receipt of cease-and-desist orders from the guitarist's camp. Iommi's suit seeks damages in the amount of three times the profits from the merchandise sales, plus a halt to the BLACK SABBATH product sales.
Iommi and SABBATH bassist Geezer Butler both said some less than kind things about working with Osbourne in a spring 2009 interview with Decibel magazine. The pair released a new studio album as HEAVEN & HELL, the post-Ozzy version of SABBATH featuring vocalist Ronnie James Dio, and Butler said that working with Dio was much easier than Osbourne. He explained, "Ronnie's a songwriter in his own right — he's got tons of ideas. Whereas Ozzy . . . in the old days, he'd come up with a vocal line and I'd write the lyrics. Ronnie is 100 percent involved in both the musical side and the vocal side, and he writes his own lyrics as well."
Butler added that Osbourne didn't take him seriously as a songwriter, saying, "If we were with Ozzy and I came in with the killer riff of all time, Ozzy wouldn't even think of doing it because I'm not the guitarist and that's the way he thinks . . . That's why it was so bloody hard to write anything."
Butler said about HEAVEN & HELL's debut CD, "The Devil You Know", "If we'd written this album with Ozzy, we'd still be working on the first track."
Iommi added that there was a sharp difference between the singers live as well, saying, "It was great being with Ozzy on the road . . . but with Ronnie it's a lot different, because we go out and we know exactly what we're gonna be doing. With Ozzy, we didn't really know. It was touch and go sometimes on some of those early shows, whether he was gonna turn up, if he'd be able to sing, if his voice was gone, or what. We'd have to cancel shows, which Geezer and myself really hated. But with Ronnie, we've never canceled a show."

STAIND Singer Rethinking Approach To Solo Album
The Pulse of Radio reports that STAIND singer Aaron Lewis has been planning and working on his first solo album for several years, but now he says he's rethinking how he's going to go about releasing it. Lewis told The Pulse of Radio that the idea of putting out a full-length album in the current music industry is less appealing to him at this point. "When you look at the market, it really doesn't make very much sense to continue trying to put together a CD's worth of material, when people are gonna pick and choose through it anyways," he said. "So there's gonna be two or three new songs that will be released virally, that will also probably find themselves on the tail end of a live CD as well."
Lewis said he was heading to Los Angeles next week to meet with a producer — whose name he wouldn't reveal — about recording his new studio tracks.
The vocalist did not give a release date for the live CD, which is being recorded on his current solo acoustic tour.
Lewis added that he would probably release a full solo CD after STAIND records its next album, which will be its last for Atlantic Records.

IN VIRTUE Begins Recording New Album
California power metallers IN VIRTUE have entered the studio to begin recording their new full-length album, "Embrace the Horror", for a late 2010 release via an as-yet-undetermined record label. The follow-up to last year's "Delusions of Grandeur" will be a loose concept album about the end of the world and will contain about 12 songs. The band has already laid down the drum tracks at Prairie Sun Recording studios in Cotati, California with engineer Jason D'Ottavio (Shrapnel Records) and will be recording the remaining tracks over the next several months.
Says guitarist and composer Trey Xavier, "This album has been a long time coming. We've been sitting on these songs for over a year and now we get to do it right. These are our fastest and heaviest songs to date, and I am confident that this album will be a treat for fans of all kinds of metal."
IN VIRTUE formed in 2004 at Sonoma State University when four friends with a love for fast and heavy music recruited a lady to sing lead. Soon the IN VIRTUE sound was born, a blend of finely composed melodic power metal and death metal.
IN VIRTUE endeavors to blend catchy melody and anthemic choruses with aggressive energy and brutal symmetry to create balanced musical fusion. | 0

CYNIC To Release \'Re-Traced\' EP In May
On May 17, reunited progressive rock/metal band CYNICwill release a brand new EP entitled "Re-Traced", featuring reinterpretations of four songs from the group's critically acclaimed "Traced In Air" album as well as a previously unreleased song.
"'Re-Traced' is an experiment for us — an opportunity to turn four songs from 'Traced in Air' inside out and to share something new", comments frontman Paul Masvidal.
"In our exploration, we've created music that is part 'sci-fi prog folk,' part psychedelic rock, part minimalist restraint. These interpretations feel channeled from another galaxy.
"For the most part, the tunes reference some of our favourite musical forms and in our own curious way (electronic/ambient, jazz/fusion, drum n' bass, experimental, shoegaze). There is no vocoder, no traditionally busy CYNIC riffs that are some of our most signatures sounds, but the music retains its song structure, integral melodic sense, harmony and lyrical inspiration."
Masvidal on the new song: "It is entitled 'Wheels Within Wheels' and it is the most rock/metal tune on the EP. Mood-wise it has a melodic optimism that is a bit more transparent than in other CYNIC songs, giving it a unique and emotive color.
"We are really pleased with the performances and energy of this track. Considering this song is perhaps the closest reference to a familiar CYNIC sound, it still leaves behind many of the former trademarks and introduces a new shade of groove and dynamic.
"Progressive music has many faces, and that is always the name of the game for CYNIC: reinventing ourselves and pushing our own musical boundaries for ourselves and our fans."

ATHEIST Frontman On New Material: \'The Music Is Insane In The Most Catchiest Of Ways To Me\'
Vocalist Kelly Shaefer reactivated seminal technical metal pioneers ATHEIST has issued the following update:
"We are currently deep into the writing of what I feel will be a defining moment in the career of ATHEIST and us as individuals.
"The music is insane in the most catchiest of ways to me... It's complex, but very moody, and interesting to the 10th degree.
"[It is] SO fun writing this music again, and hearing the quality that has developed.
"We have all grown up so much, and people, and as songwriters. My guitar playing in the last year has really progressed, and my contributions on guitar to this new album are in my opinion my most ecclectic. So very heavy and quick as well.
"Tons of fun.
"[I] cannot wait to get these fuckers out on the road later this year.
"I have been teaching guitar in my hometown of Sarasota. That has been a very rewarding experience for me.
"[My daughter] Skyelilly is four and moving through life like a diva freight train.
"Just had a great deal of my painting professionally photographed by my good friend Amanda, so I will add them to my portfolio page, and soon I will have a line of limited-edition prints of some of my paintings. Only 100 will be sold per painting. Signed with a certificate of authenticity.
"Have not been out much lately, just playing guitar four hours a day, and compiling as many riffs as I can write.
"Heading to Atlanta to meet up with the boys from ATHEIST to continue organizing material.
"We have been offered some amazing tours, but we have to make sure this album is the shit... so touring before we get this fucker done is just not in our best interest until after the album is done.
"We will be heading to Europe in june to do a string of dates and to play some of the new material live. Centered around our appearance at Hellfest 2010, that's going to be a blast."

THE PROJECT HATE - New Album Half Finished
Örebro, Sweden-based death metallers THE PROJECT HATE have issued the following update:
"Time for another small update on the song writing process for album number 7. Here we talked a little about how things were going just a week or two ago and now we wanna inform you that half of the album is pretty much completed, and it feels absolutely fantastic.
K’s (Lord K Philipson) spending every awaken hour on writing the best material ever (saying anything else would be retarded, but you also know it’s true) and we are aiming for 6 or 7 songs (as always about 60 minutes of insane music) for this coming masterpiece.
In the past we have written the music for all the songs before writing lyrics and picking out who’s going to sing where, etc... This time we are completing one song at the time. Everything is going great and we can’t wait to get this bastard recorded and show the world how it’s done once again. It also seems like we might have the title for the album already as well...
Stay tuned for more updates."

ARCH ENEMY Singer Calls REVOLVER\'s \'Hottest Chicks\' Movement \'An Embarrassment For Women\'
Charlie Steffens of KNAC.COM recently conducted an interview with vocalist Angela Gossow of Swedish/German extreme metallers ARCH ENEMY. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
KNAC.COM: The last time you and I spoke was just after [guitarist] Christopher [Amott] had left the band and Fredrik [Åkesson, now in OPETH] came in as his replacement on guitar. Gus G. did the 2005 Ozzfest dates prior to that. Is Christopher fully committed to the band now?
Gossow: Absolutely. I think if anything they've actually gotten closer as a guitar team, Chris and Michael. He really complements Michael. It's always different when you have two brothers playing. They grew up with each other. The way they write, it fits perfectly. It was definitely different with Fredrik. Fredrik's a great guitar player. He just goes and learns a song, note by note, exactly how it should be. But it's a different chemistry in the band when you go onstage, when you have Chris back. It feels again the way it's supposed to feel. The funny thing is that Gus, obviously, was introduced to OZZY OSBOURNE at Ozzfest and now he's actually playing with OZZY OSBOURNE. All these good things came out of that whole thing. We toured with OPETH and Fredrik got to know the OPETH guys. Now he plays in OPETH. Chris had his time out, Fredrik Åkesson got his break, and Gus G. as well, really. It's amazing how fate works. I don't really believe in fate, but that's just almost too good to be coincidence.
KNAC.COM: A couple of years ago I was flipping through a metal magazine and there was a fold-out poster of you and Cristina [Scabbia] from LACUNA COIL representing their "Hottest Chicks in Metal" feature. To be considered as one of the hottest chicks in metal wasn't a career goal of yours, right?
Gossow: It's funny that you mentioned that because I just had a huge clash with the editor of Revolver. He's put me into the 2010 "Hottest Chicks in Metal" calendar [see below] with that picture in of 2004, so they keep kind of recycling that one. And, I've explained several times I don't want to be featured in that — in that corner. If they want a picture of the band and it's about the music, all cool. No problem. But if it's about me being a woman… I don't like the "Hottest Chicks in Metal" movement at all. I think it's very counterproductive and kind of retro, you know? Going back in time and he said, "Of course. If you don't want to be featured then I will make sure you won't be featured in any of the other publications we have." So I burned that bridge by saying, "I don't want to be part of it. I'm not cool with it. You should have asked me." So that's what I got for it, and I don't give a fuck. That's so bad, Revolver magazine. It's just all about highlighting the crap that's going on backstage, highlighting a pair of tits, and all the crazy stories on tour. And then you look for the actual bits on music and you can't even find them anymore. I don't even know what kind of music these bands are playing that they are featuring, because it doesn't come through in the articles, at all. We haven't even had a feature in this magazine for the last three years, so I can very well live without the whole… I hate the "Hottest Chicks in Metal!" It's an embarrassment for women, I think (laughs). It's an embarrassment for female musicians, who actually are musicians. I don't think we're ever going to be popping up in Revolver magazine again, after my little e-mail conversation with the editor. (laughs)
KNAC.COM: Going back to the "Anthems of Rebellion" period in 2003 on up to now, you guys have continuously been busy. It seems like you've never slowed down, despite the little change in personnel back when Christopher left.
Gossow: Yeah, it's been a crazy ride since then. When I joined ARCH ENEMY we didn't really know what was in for us and where it would go. We have evolved as a band. We've become very self-confident musicians in a scene full of victims. I think the music scene is terrible when it comes to how musicians are being treated. We've come out on top. We've done really well. We've released a bunch of really good records; we've done a bunch of very good tours. We fired our management in 2008 and now I do all that.
KNAC.COM: Really?
Gossow: Yeah, we're totally free. We own all our songs. No management in the back telling us what to do. Yeah, it's amazing. And the weird thing, since I took over management, is I'm not getting sick either anymore. I don't feel so victimized, like somebody else has decided that I got to make it through no matter what. When you're in charge of something, you really want to do it. You've got a different strength for it.
KNAC.COM: It's not like slavery.
Gossow: Exactly. The music business is setup to enslave the musician. The record sales are dying, so they're going to put a lot of pressure on a band to tour as much as they can. Sometimes I think some bands are touring to death. How much are you enjoying playing your 260 shows in a year? Whatever we do we do it very consciously. Yes, we want to go to the U.S. now, because we haven't been there for two years. We do a lot of touring, but we hop from continent to continent. There are a lot of different scenarios we experience, and that's how we keep it really interesting. We picked out the support bands. We're totally excited about the package. Yeah, I think we're in an excellent spot as a band, but it takes a lot of self-confidence and a lot of knowledge. If you want to run your own business, you better know your business. Not everybody can read a contract or really concentrate on it, or negotiate a deal, or a tour, or speak to promoters. You have to have a very equal relationship in the band to be able to be self-managed. Everybody's got to do some jobs. We're very lucky with ARCH ENEMY. Everybody's equal. It's a team.

SKINLAB Frontman Launches New Project
Vocalist/bassist Steev Esquivel of San Francisco Bay Area metallers SKINLAB has issued the following update:
"First off, I'd like to announce my new project, ST. JUDAS. Another musical adventure I decided to bust out while healing from my health issues earlier on in the year, which ultimately put a hault to SKINLAB and had me sidelined next to shit shitload of guitars and recording gear writing a shiload of different styles I've always wanted to dig into.
"Now... in no way will this affect SKINLAB as we've got touring plans later on in the year. This is something I'd like to do with a bunch of homeys and rock some shit!
"Recording started yesterday at Snake's [SKINLAB guitarist Steve Green] Greendot Studios with my good friend Doug Morrison on drums. Doug's slammin' out two tracks — 'Old Crow's Farewell' and 'California's Burning' — that came out amazing!
"Doug's style is total Jean-Paul Gaster (CLUTCH) meets Jimmy Bower (DOWN) which gave that huge, solid groove that music calls for. A couple tracks of guitar tracks with a few overdubs later, we were listening to what Doug and I both agreed might be the heaviest thing we've ever recorded! Keyboards, bass, vocals coming up!!
"More news and band member announcements coming soon!
"Now as far as SKINLAB, we've been seetting up dates in May for a short run with our good friends FLAW and then we will be teaming up with Jackson Guitars on a killer U.S package in June/July that will have us particpating in select music stores doing clinics with the other Jackson artists on the tour. This are still in the works as Jackson have been in talks with several of their bands and their participation.
"Speaking of Jackson, last week Snake and I went to the Fender/Jackson factory to look over the specs for the new SKINLAB 'Volture' guitar and bass. We ended up going with features that will have them become part of the Extreme models, with the new Jackson logo and shark-fin inlays... These fuckers are bad-fuckin'-ass!! It's a bit to early to reveal all specs, but we've documented the whole thing along with complete tour of the factory and will share with you all soon." | 0

EXODUS: New Album Artwork Unveiled
"Exhibit B: The Human Condition", the ninth studio album from San Francisco Bay Area thrashers EXODUS, will be released this spring via Nuclear Blast Records (Note: Two weeks ago, the label's European office announced a May 12 European release date for the CD, although this has may change.) The cover artwork for the effort can now be viewed below.
Commented guitarist/songwriter Gary Holt: "We wanted to portray the violence of man at its finest, so we started with our own version of the Leonardo da Vinci sketch [of 'Vitruvian Man'], but done the 'EXODUS' way! I was pointed in the direction of Colin Larks of Rainsong Design for the cover and he killed it! To me, the artwork represents man and his affinity for bloodshed, ignorance, and all-around ability to be led like sheep to the slaughter. The image fits the songs on this record perfectly. The whole layout is going to as sick as the record itself!"
"Exhibit B: The Human Condition" was helmed by acclaimed British producer Andy Sneap (MEGADETH, ARCH ENEMY, KREATOR).
