Legendary guitarist George Lynch (LYNCH MOB, SOULS OF WE, DOKKEN) is in damage-control mode these days and wants to retract any of his earlier statements concerning a possible reunion of the classic lineup of DOKKEN. According to an official press release, Lynch "apologizes for being preemptive and [claims that he] just simply misspoke in his excitement." He says, "We are TALKING about a possible reunion for 2011, but it's still in early stages!"
All the members of DOKKEN's classic 1980s lineup reunited on stage for the first time in more than a decade on November 29, 2009 at the House of Blues in Anaheim, California. According to Andrew Youssef of the OC Weekly, Don Dokken appeared on stage and said he had some friends he wanted to introduce. Jeff Pilson (bass) and George Lynch (guitar) joined Mick Brown (drums) for a two-song encore of "When Heaven Comes Down" and "In My Dreams".
HARMAJA, the Finnish acoustic project featuring vocalist Juha-Pekka Leppäluoto (CHARON, NORTHERN KINGS, ex-POISONBLACK), will release its new album, "Lento", on April 21 through Wiima Music.

Jesse Capps of Rock Confidential recently conducted an interview with W.A.S.P. mainman Blackie Lawless. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Rock Confidential: A lot of people are excited about the release of your latest CD, "Babylon". The new video is getting a lot of attention, too. People are probably reading to far into the imagery, but a few fans are yapping about the timing of Obama in the video in relation to the lyrics in the song.
Lawless: I don't pay attention to that kind of stuff. What's being said?
Rock Confidential: I saw a few people likening you to Rush Limbaugh…
Lawless: (laughs) Yeah, I can see that! We'll be a new tag team!
Rock Confidential: But the video doesn't just show Obama. Vladimir Putin, Hitler and Ahmadinejad make appearances, too.
Lawless: The gang is all there. Hey man, I'm just playing umpire. I'm calling it as I see it. If folks get upset about it that's just the way it is. When that guy was running for President…I didn't know anything about him. Nobody did. He says, "If you want to know who I am, go look at my background. Look at the people I surround myself with. That will tell you exactly who I am." Fair enough. I did some investigation on this guy and I was horrified! I couldn't believe that a man like that could even run for dog catcher, much less be President of the United States. I was stunned that this guy sold himself so well. He is the ultimate car salesman. The ultimate cheerleader. What he does is have pep rallies. He's always there with his teleprompters. He can't do anything without them and the minute he does try to speak without one he puts his feet in his mouth. He can't think on his feet. The guys is not qualified to run anything. I thought we couldn't get any worse when Bush was there. Just when you think it can't get any worse — look out. I'm not flying the Republican flag here, I'm just calling it like I see it. He's a con man.
Rock Confidential: There are so many people that didn't do any research on Obama and I think they're regretting it now.
Lawless: They're just going on sound bytes. But, this country belongs to them, too. If you're not willing to do five minutes worth of research then you get what you pay for.
Rock Confidential: That video touches on subject matter that's very visual and interesting to people – no matter their religious beliefs.
Lawless: It is quite colorful. The imagery that opens up sure allows for a lot of different interpretation. Where that came from was really at the end of Bush's term. They were all going 'round and 'round about this supposed global financial crisis we were in. "Crisis" is politician codeword for "We're getting read to take some freedoms away from you or pick your pockets some more." At the same time I was listening to what was happening in the EU. They were having a meeting in Brussels. These guys were talking about how bad we'd screwed everything up and since we couldn't do it as individual countries that maybe it was time for a one world government. Another guy spoke up and said we should have a one world currency to go with that one world government. Then a third guy chimed in and said that would be perfect because by 2017 we could have the whole of the EU micro-chipped. I'm standing there gawking with my mouth open. Do these guys have any comprehension of what they're talking about? Do they understand the possible ramifications of what they're talking about? This is potential 666 we're talking about. Before I did the record I did a detailed study of the book of Revelation in relation to all of this. I was astonished at the accuracy. Twenty years ago when I wrote "Headless Children", I referred to it. I said, "Four horsemen sit high up in the saddle waiting, ride the bloody trail of no return." Are we now that much closer to that Armageddon than we were 20 years ago? It makes you scratch your head.
Vocalist Jonathan "Joller" Albrechtsen has quit Danish thrashers HATESPHERE. His temporary replacement is Morten "Kruge" Madsen of the Danish metal band MEVADIO.
Despite Jonathan's exit, HATESPHERE has no intention of calling it a day and will hit the American shores as planned on February 24 as part of a month-long tour with THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, OBSCURA and AUGURY.
Commented HATESPHERE bassist Mixen Lindberg: "Today is one of those strange days where two equally strong feelings are tossing my insides around in a ponderous fistfight. One is gloomy and leaving me with a sensation that we're stuck knee-deep in a twitch. The other one is relieved, proud and stronger than ever.
"Today we part ways with Joller. Having a hard time combining full-time work, two bands and a general lack of excitement on his part, Joller came to the conclusion that his time in HATESPHERE was up. We debated for a couple of days there, but saw it fitting that we let him go because you can't be in this band if your heart is not in place. So, as sad as it may be, we're happy to send him on his way so we can all on move on towards bigger and better things, fully focused.
"Now, we've endured hardship before so I am not worried one bit. Also, the energy in the band is at an all-time high, especially since Mike [Park, drums] joined us last year, and at this point, we're already in contact with several possible singers (with some really interesting people in the mix, might I add!). Tryouts will commence immediately upon arrival from our forthcoming U.S. tour, and shortly after that we will hit the studio to record something new and fresh."
In other news, HATESPHERE has acquired a new U.K. agent in the shape of Ian Shaw from Factory Music (CHILDREN OF BODOM, EXODUS, etc.). Touring activities for the U.K. and rest of Europe are already in the works.
HATESPHERE's latest album, "To The Nines" entered the official chart in the band's home country at position No. 36. The CD was recorded over a nine-day period at Antfarm Studio in Aarhus, Denmark with producer Tue Madsen (THE HAUNTED, MOONSPELL, DARK TRANQUILLITY, GOREFEST).
Austrian symphonic melodic metallers SERENITY have set "Death & Legacy" as the title of their new CD, tentatively due before the end of the year. Vocalist Georg Neuhauser states, "We're working on a historical concept for the whole album. Nine songs are nearly finished now so there are only two more songs left to write for the limited editions (one for Europe/USA and one for Japan)."
He adds, "The songs so far are really fantastic! Bombastic, speedy and there's a great ballad as well. There will be some interludes and we're just working on the concept for the video clip. There'll also be an online single in advance but I can't tell you exactly when!
"The album will be finished in summer but we have got no influence on the release date!
"The promo pics are keeping us busy too and within the next weeks we'll have a big photo shooting and I can promise you the pictures will be something really special and new — no boring pics showing five musicians standing in front of a wall..."
Listenable Records will re-release the classic 2002 album from New York death metallers IMMOLATION, "Unholy Cult". According to the label, the new edition comes in a stellar digipack with a full, detailed 12-page booklet with new live pictures and liner notes from the bandmembers themselves. The 2003 "Bringing Down The World" DVD has been added as a bonus. An extra-special vinyl edition featuring a picture disc will also be made available at a later date.
Montreal progressive death metal act AUGURY gas issued the following update:
"After eight years of collaboration, we are sad to announce that we had to part ways with our bass player Dominic 'Forest' Lapointe. We keep in mind his outstanding musical input and volcanic stage presence, and thank him for helping to shape the sound of AUGURY. But the show must go on and we are actually starting The American Defloration tour with THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, OBSCURA and HATESPHERE, with a very special rhythm section featuring Quebec City jazz player Christian Pacaud (MAG project) on bass, and our longtime friend Tommy McKinnon (formerly of NEURAXIS) behind the drum kit. MISERY INDEX's discography collection of splits and EPs, "Pulling Out The Nails" (named after the first song the band wrote), has just been released on CD through the band's own Anarchos Records imprint, and will soon be made available on double vinyl through Power It Up (Germany). It features 30 tracks, including all non-album material from 2001-2008, such as the "Overthrow" and "Dissent" EPs, as well as the splits with STRUCTURE OF LIES, COMMIT SUICIDE, MUMAKIL, and BATHTUB SHITTER, the "Hang 'Em High" 7", live tracks, bonus covers, etc. The compilation was remastered by Scott Hull last year. This CD includes an extensive 24-page booklet of details, notes, pictures, and an all-time list of all the shows MISERY INDEX has performed. The group states, "We hope it's the final representation of the various incarnations of the band in the past eight years."
MISERY INDEX entered Wright Way Studios (DYING FETUS, SLIPKNOT, MOS DEF) on January 2 with engineer Steve Wright to begin recording its new album, tentatively titled "Heirs To Thievery", for a May release via Relapse Records.

BLEEDING THROUGH's Brandan Schieppatti has joined forces with musical polymath Mick Kenney (ANAAL NATHRAKH) to create SORROWS.
The two musically minded neighbors met up in Huntington Beach, California in October 2009 to collaborate on this new musical project. The resulting album is, in Mick's own words, "a mixture of hardcore crustpunk, black metal, electronic beats and super heavy riffage."
The album has been written and produced by Mick, with Brandan taking on the vocalist mantle once again. Although still recruiting members for the live lineup, they have already drafted in Trevor Friedrich (formerly of EIGHTEEN VISIONS, and now of industrialists COMBICHRIST), on drums, while Mick will play guitar.
SORROWS is seeking a suitable label to release the band's already completed debut CD.
Swedish death metallers NOMINON will release their fourth album, "Monumentomb", on March 23 via Deathgasm Records. The CD was recorded at Necromorbus Studio (WATAIN, NOMINON, AVERSE SEFIRA, FUNERAL MIST, NEX, ONDSKAPT, MORK GRYNING, ADORIOR) in Alvik, Sweden and was mixed with producer Tore Stjerna. The group states, "We managed to record eleven songs and it all sounds really powerful and heavy, yet fast and with a certain raw edge, and at last it's definitely the most varied material so far from NOMINON."

According to The Pulse of Radio, PAPA ROACH is currently in the studio laying down five brand new songs for inclusion on a live album that will be out sometime later this year. The group is working with BREAKING BENJAMIN and CAVO producer David Bendeth. The concert tracks were taped on the band's recent tour with SHINEDOWN.
San Francisco Bay Area power/thrashers IMAGIKA have announced the addition of guitarist Robert Kolowitz to the group's ranks. A current member of Bay Area stalwarts HELLHOUND and former member of BLACKSTORM and RAPIDFIRE, Robert "brings years of experience and perseverance to the second-guitar slot," according to a press release. "His former bands have performed with ANTHRAX, DEATH ANGEL, LEGACY (pre-TESTAMENT), FORBIDDEN, MEGADETH, NITRO, VICIOUS RUMORS and SLAYER."
Commented guitarist Steve Rice: "The band was impressed with Rob's ability to learn our material quickly and his killer guitar skills. IMAGIKA will sound even more aggressive now and we look forward to our future collaboration as we start the writing for our next CD.
"Rob came in at a great time on the eve of our new release, 'Portrait Of A Hanged Man', which we believe is our best release to date. The fans can definitely expect a heavier, louder and faster IMAGIKA!"
"Portrait Of A Hanged Man" will be released on March 19 in Europe and May 11 in the U.S. via Metalville. The CD was recorded at Fang Studios in San Mateo, California by IMAGIKA guitarist Steve Rice and was mixed at KING DIAMOND guitarist Andy La Rocque's Sonic Train Studios in Varberg, Sweden. In addition to mixing the effort, La Rocque makes a guest appearance on the instrumental "A God No More". Drummer Henry Moreno was once again responsible for designing all the art for the CD (see cover image below), which marks the recording debut of new bassist Jim Pegram.

Commented Moreno: "Well, obviously the [artwork] concept had to be something to do with the CD title so I created the first piece which was a person with a noose around their neck but it didn't have that 'CD cover' feel. Metalville and Steve made some suggestions and one thing they came up with was what if the hanging man was a silhouette. I thought that was a cool idea and ran with that and really just followed the theme of the song, which is about a person seeing the haunting vision of a portrait of man being hanged that comes to life. Metalville and the band really liked the finished product and so the CD cover was born! The original first piece is also included in the CD booklet.

Finnish metallers NORTHER have issued the following update:
"During the last couple of months [guitarist] Daniel [Freyberg] from NAILDOWN has been helping us out with our recent live duties. Since he turned out to be a perfect fit in every way we decided to offer him to become a permanent member of the band. Besides his skillfull guitar work, he is also a talented songwriter.

According to Rollingstone.com, SLASH (VELVET REVOLVER, ex-GUNS N' ROSES) didn’t have trouble finding a host of singers for his upcoming solo album, but the guitarist says the hunt for a new Velvet Revolver vocalist is still ongoing - and once he finishes touring behind his own record, tracking down a new frontperson is a priority. “I think Duff [McKagan] is doing something with Jane’s Addiction right now so we’re all sort of all over the place doing whatever until we can all regroup,” he says. “We did listen to a lot of singers, but there hasn’t been anybody that’s going to be the guy so far.”
Though a few big-name singers have offered themselves up for the job - including SLIPKNOT’s Corey Taylor - Slash doesn’t think the new vocalist will be somebody as famous as original frontman Scott Weiland. “It’s really hard to do something with a voice that’s already really well known in an original band,” he says. “We want someone who is really good that hasn’t been recognized by the whole country as being amazing, but somebody who is just on the precipice of just being discovered.”
"Raised On Rock", a brand new track from German hard rock veterans SCORPIONS, is now available for purchase via Amazon.com. The song comes off the band's final studio album, "Sting In The Tail", which will be released in Europe on March 19 and in North America on March 23 via Universal Music Enterprises. The CD was recorded at a studio in Hannover, Germany with Swedish producers Mikael "Nord" Andersson and Martin Hansen (the team behind THE RASMUS' "Dead Letters" CD).
Selfmadegod Records will release of the "Peel Sessions" CD by Belgium's cult grind band AGATHOCLES. Due in March, the collection includes 15 previously unreleased songs recorded at BBC Radio in London, England by none other than legendary John Peel back in 1997!

German metallers EMERGENCY GATE will release their new album, entitled "The Nemesis Construct", on April 30 via Twilight Zone Records. The was recorded at Dreamscape Studios in Munich and features artwork (see below) by Raf W., who has previously worked with METALLICA, SLAYER, IRON MAIDEN and SOULFLY, among others. In addition, EVERGREY frontman Tom Englund makes a guest appearance on one of the tracks, sharing the vocals with EMERGENCY GATE singer Matthias Kupka — "and the two voices fit perfectly," according to EMERGENCY GATE.

Former NIGHTWISH singer Tarja Turunen recently entered Petrax Studios in Hollola, Finland to begin recording her new solo album, "What Lies Beneath", for a late 2010 release. She writes on her blog, "I recorded my first-ever piano tracks!
"The grand piano in the studio is Bechstein, which sound I truly love. Bechstein is a very moody piano in general. I have the same brand at home as well.
"In these songs you will easily 'recognize' me playing the piano parts instead of a professional pianist. So if I don't consider myself as a piano player, you shouldn’t do that either.
"The feeling in these songs is the most important matter and I think I captured it."
Turunen previously stated about "What Lies Beneath", "The process for my second album started back in June 2008. Among the first songs that my friends and I composed at that time, a character called Naiad was born. The fantasy story of Naiad gave me the idea for the album title and for the whole album concept: 'What Lies Beneath'.
"It has been wonderful to be able to brainstorm again and decide the direction the album is going to take. I hope that you will be surprised again by my work; because that's the way I like it."
WOLFTRAP, the brand new Finnish "old-school hard rock boogie" band featuring members of OMNIUM GATHERUM, MANITOU, MALPRACTICE and KAIHORO, has posted a new song, "Done Deal My Dear", on its MySpace page.
KORN bassist Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu is putting the finishing touches on a new solo album, "Bassically", which he hopes to release later this year. He tells AOL's Noisecreep, "I'd say it's like a jazz fusion funk type of thing. Real new age, too. Different kinds of music.
He adds, "I've always wanted to do it. When I was younger, learning bass, I listened to a lot of bass albums; Stanley Clarke, I grew up listening to that type of stuff."
"I don't want people to be confused and buy it and not like it. It's not heavy," he emphasizes. "I don't want people to get it and think, 'Man, I can't believe I bought this crap'. It's not meant to be heavy. If you like heavy and are not open-minded, you will not like this."
For the upcoming CD, Fieldy multi-tracked lead and rhythm parts using a 15-string bass, stand-up bass and fretless bass.
"It's insane, man. I did so many lead tracks and rhythm tracks," he tells Noisecreep. "Sometimes, it's chaotic. It kinda takes you on a ride through the CD, so you can have a mellow funk track next to a chaotic bunch of basses going crazy. Right now, I have 11 songs finished. I might do two more, but it's pretty much done."
"The Madness And The Damage Done", the new video from the Norwegian act SHINING (not to be confused with the Swedish black metal band of the same name), can be viewed below. The song comes off the band's new album, "Blackjazz", which was released in Europe on January 25 via Indie Recordings and in North America on February 2 through The End Records.
According to The Pulse of Radio, Serj Tankian will perform an orchestral version of his 2007 "Elect The Dead" album at a series of live shows to take place in Europe this summer. The "Elect The Dead Symphony" was first unveiled last March at New Zealand's Auckland Town Hall with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, a performance that will arrive on CD and DVD on March 9 of this year. Now Tankian will recreate that show with some of the finest orchestras in Europe, including the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Italy's Orchestra Filarmonica Italiana.
As for bringing the "Elect The Dead Symphony" to the U.S., Tankian told The Pulse of Radio that it will happen eventually. "Yeah, I've got my agent looking into it," he said. "The problem is we're a little late for this year just 'cause, you know, orchestras are usually booked up a year, year and a half ahead, and so trying to find the right opportunities with the right people is just a little more difficult, but we're trying to do that, yeah. If it works out that it's in 2011, I don't care, I'll do it then."
Nationwide screenings of the "Elect The Dead Symphony" DVD began on Friday (February 19) and will continue up to the release date of the disc. You can check out cinemapurgatorio.com for screening info.
Tankian is also working on his second solo album, which is tentatively titled "Music Without Borders" and which the singer describes as "electro-orchestral-jazz-rock." He hopes to have the album out by late summer.
Tankian's band, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, has been on hiatus since late 2006 and shows no signs of regrouping any time soon.

Norwegian black metallers 1349 will release their new album, "Demonoir", on April 26 in Europe via Indie Recordings and one day later in North America through Prosthetic Records.

"Demon Class", the new video from DEMONICA — the new project featuring MERCYFUL FATE guitarist Hank Shermann — can be viewed below. The song comes off the band's debut album, "Demonstrous", which is scheduled for release on February 26 via Massacre Records. The CD, which was made available in Japan on February 17, was recorded in the Bay Area, the Rocky Mountains and Copenhagen (Denmark), and was mixed at Flatline Audio in Denver, Colorado with Dave Otero (CEPHALIC CARNAGE, MARTRIDEN, COBALT).
