JUDAS PRIEST - Deluxe Version Of British Steel Due In May; Details Revealed
 Sony Music have announced the release of a limited deluxe expanded edition of JUDAS PRIEST’s seminal album, British Steel, on May 10th in the UK and May 11th in North America.
British Steel was the sixth studio album by Judas Priest. Released on April 14th, 1980 and produced by Tom Allom, British Steel was recorded at Tittenhurst Park in England - a mansion owned at the time by former BEATLE Ringo Starr, and previously owned by John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
British Steel has long been considered one of metals all-time classics. It was with this release that Priest truly broke through to the masses, with a pair of tracks that have become fixtures on rock radio - the enduring anthems 'Breaking The Law' and 'Living After Midnight'. But like all classic albums, there is not a single weak track detected on British Steel, as evidenced by such standouts as the perennial concert highlight, 'Metal Gods', as well as 'Rapid Fire', 'Grinder', 'United' and 'The Rage', amongst others.
In 2009 Judas Priest performed the British Steel album in its entirety for the first time ever as part of their 30th anniversary USA tour. A filmed recording of the show on the August 17th, 2009 at The Seminole Hard Rock Arena, Hollywood, Florida - will be included in both the limited edition deluxe and deluxe releases. The show was captured in front of a vibrant American audience and in full 5.1 surround and stereo sound. Known for their high-energy and spectacular stage shows the band played the entire British Steel album in sequence as well as a number of other well-know tracks from their catalog.
The live concert was mixed in stereo and 5.1 by the original British Steel producer Tom Allom. In addition, the DVD will include the bonus content of The Making Of British Steel, a 30-minute doc featuring the 4 original band members. This new DVD brings the live Priest experience like no other live recording.
The deluxe expanded edition will come in two formats:
- Limited edition deluxe three-disc to include original album, live DVD and live CD
- Deluxe two-disc to include original album plus live DVD

GRAND MAGUS Completes Recording New Album
 GRAND MAGUS, the three-piece Swedish heavy rock band featuring "JB" Christofferson (guitar, lead vocals), Fox Skinner (bass, backing vocals) and Sebastian "Seb" Sippola (drums), has finished recording and mixing its fifth album, "Hammer Of The North", at 301 studios outside of Stockholm for a spring/early summer release via Roadrunner Records. The group says, "Tonight the awesome mix for 'Hammer Of The North' will be sent to New York for mastering.
"We are chuffed with the way everything turned out recording-wise and the mix really made things come alive in a way that far exceeded our expectations.
"Now we are entering the final phase of making this album come to fruition.
"It's been hard work for a solid two months in an ice-cold Stockholm, but it will totally be worth every single second we put into it. Also we've just seen the incredible artwork that will complement the sounds that we make in a most fitting manner. All in all, you are in for a treat!"
During the band's 10-year history, GRAND MAGUS has released two demos, one split EP and four full-length albums, and has received overwhelmingly positive reviews throughout. Their last opus, "Iron Will", was voted "Album of The Month" in the German Metal Hammer and Rock Hard magazines.

MICHAEL KISKE Discusses Upcoming UNISONIC Album; Fan Questions Answered
 The MICHAEL KISKE Official Fanclub reports:
Michael Kiske answered more questions in the section: Q & A (Questions & Answers), now in the Fanclub section, and also published answers are in the same place of the forum.
About UNISONIC: "The new album will be released definitely this year! More likely the second half of this year. Maybe an EP before the summer. We want this to be a killer, as you can imagine.
I will also play guitar and might do some of keyboards with my guitar too (there are effect units for that). But I am sure sooner or later we will also have a hired keyboard-player on tour with us."
About chest voice/head voice: "I honestly think the trick is NOT to think about it too much. I actually don't do anything to make the voice sound like anything else. I simply sound like this when I sing higher. I am in control of course, but I don't think about it much while I'm singing. And I don't think about chest or head-voice either. IF I do think, then I always think: "controlled chestvoice".
It's important not the sing (and think) in two modes like many do. I never really switch between two modes … (in my mind). Of course those very high screams are head-voice, but I do get quite high (these days) with my (controlled) chest-voice, because I don't think about it much."

FREE: \'FREE Forever\' Two-DVD Set Due In March
 Bringing forth a mighty brand of blues-rock in the early 1970s, FREE was a critical piece of foundation in hard rock's roots. On March 23, Eagle Rock Entertainment will celebrate their career with the release of the "Free Forever" two-DVD set.
One of the most heralded bands of the 1970s, "Free Forever" amasses archival video footage, interviews, audio, memorabilia, and other bits of the band's history to create the ultimate fan package. Featuring the powerhouse combination of a young Paul Rodgers' gravelly vocals, Simon Kirke's solid drums, Paul Kossoff's infamous guitar leads, and Andy Fraser's groove-infused bass lines, FREE laid the foundation for a blues-rock revolution.
This set features live performances from the Beat Club in Germany and U.K.'s Granada TV. The second disc boasts full audio from their set at the legendary 1970 Isle of Wight festival (which also featured JIMI HENDRIX, THE WHO, and THE DOORS), littered with a collection of band photos, posters, artwork, and unearthed video footage of tracks "Be My Friend", "Mr. Big" and "All Right Now". Bonus features include original and brand new edits of these Isle of Wight videos with split-screen views. Interviews and special feature "The Freelist", which contains a "Top of the Pops" appearance, Australian interviews, and other bits, is also included.
Disbanding in 1973, the members went on to enjoy continued success, both in acts such as BAD COMPANY and QUEEN, and in solo careers. Sadly, Kossoff passed away in 1976. Yet, even in this short time, FREE made a lasting impact that has influenced musicians and garnered countless fans. Eagle Rock is proud to capture the essence of this ground-breaking act and present it with the release of "Free Forever".

VOLBEAT: New Album Title Announced
 Danish metal rock 'n' rollers VOLBEAT have set "Beyond Hell/Above Heaven" as the title of their fourth studio album, tentatively due in Europe in September. The CD will once again be recorded at Hansen Studios in Ribe, Denmark with producer Jacob Hansen.
Commented guitarist/vocalist Michael Poulsen: "The title refers to the overall theme of the album, and it continues the storyline from where [the last VOLBEAT CD] 'Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood' left off…
VOLBEAT is "very excited about the writing process, carrying the songs into both extreme metallic territory, punk variations and some very catchy stuff at the same time," according to a posting on the band's web site. In addition, fans can expect to hear various guest musicians on the CD.
Added Poulsen: "We have fast, slow and mid-tempo songs. We still blend different styles of punk, rock 'n' roll, rockabilly, metal, heavy metal, thrash metal, country — we still keep it very open, it's just music! I cannot say too much about it right now, but we're really excited about it and it's going to be very, very cool. Again, we're going to give people something they haven't heard before. We always try to do something special and different on each and every album."

CATHEDRAL: More \'The Guessing Game\' Details Revealed
 Veteran British doom/stoner band CATHEDRAL will release its ninth full-length album and second for the Nuclear Blast label, "The Guessing Game", on March 26 in Europe and on April 20 in North America.
Produced once again by Warren Riker (DOWN, CROWBAR), who also took care of the band's last effort, "The Garden Of Unearthly Delights", in 2005, "The Guessing Game" is one wild and unpredictable ride with one of the most unique and exciting acts the metal genre has got to offer! For the first time in the band's history, they have recorded a double album that boasts thirteen tracks offering a colourful variety of musical styles and lyrical themes: "Requiem For The Voiceless", for example, is pure, down 'n' out crawling doom — and the first animal-rights song in doom metal history! Then you'll get classic stomping and grooving CATHEDRAL material with the catchy "Painting In The Dark", plus many songs wading through psychedelic and proggy waters — especially "Funeral Of Dreams", featuring none other than Alison O' Donnell of MELLOW CANDLE ('70s Irish folk rock band) fame doing guest vocals.
It comes as no surprise that this time around CATHEDRAL went as far as to include exotic instrumentation such as Mellotron and Sitar. And pay special attention to the lyrics of "Journeys Into Jade": Lee Dorrian and Co. are celebrating 20 years of CATHEDRAL with this one!

XANDRIA Once Again Looking For Lead Singer
 German goth metal band XANDRIA has parted ways with its singer of one year, Kerstin Bischof. The group states, "Due to occupational and private reasons, [Kerstin] wants to concentrate on her non-musical career in the future and cannot support XANDRIA the way it would be necessary. We wish her all the best for the future!
"So here and now we are searching for a new singer again, details for applications follow in a few days on our official homepage.
"We know that you are waiting for a new album, and we are very sorry for keeping you waiting even longer for the new songs, with which we actually wanted to enter the recording studio now.

PRONG, CYNIC Members To Guest On ASYLUM Debut
 Drummers Alexei Rodriguez (PRONG) and Sean Reinert (CYNIC, DEATH) are scheduled to lay down tracks for "A Lethal Dose Of Truth", the debut album from ASYLUM, the Illinois-based project featuring Markus Johansson (lead vocals, lead guitar) and Johnny Rox (bass guitar). In addition, Eyal Levi (DAATH) will be shredding a solo along with Rob Caggiano (ANTHRAX) to round off the lineup on the two new songs along with Johansson and Rox.
"A Lethal Dose Of Truth" has been completely self-produced by Johansson and Rox and is nearing completion. The CD will include 15 tracks with guest appearances by the following musicians:

EXTREME: \'Take Us Alive\'DVD Trailer Available
 Reunited Massachusetts hard rockers EXTREME are scheduled to release a new DVD/CD entitled "Take Us Alive" in the spring via Victor Entertainment in Japan and Frontiers Records in Europe. The set is expected to include footage that was shot on August 8, 2009 at the House of Blues in Boston as well as "four bonus videos."

HOUR OF PENANCE: Another New Song Available For Streaming
 Italian death metallers HOUR OF PENANCE will release their fourth album, "Paradogma", on March 30 via Unique Leader Records. The CD cover art was created by Gyula Havancsàk, who has previously worked with such acts as ANNIHILATOR and DESTRUCTION.

THE DESTINY PROGRAM: \'Gathas\' Artwork, Track Listing Unveiled
 German hardcore/metal act THE DESTINY PROGRAM (formerly DESTINY) has completed work on its new album, "Gathas", for an April 23 release through Bastardized Recordings. The band states, "For the first time, we produced an album on our own and we are pretty satisfied with the result. For the mixing and mastering, we were able to work with our good friend Tue Madsen (HALFORD, BEHEMOTH, KATAKLYSM, THE HAUNTED) again." The CD cover artwork was created by Seldon Hunt and can be viewed below.

TARJA TURUNEN Issues Update On New Solo Album
 Former NIGHTWISH singer Tarja Turunen recently entered Petrax Studios in Hollola, Finland to begin recording her new solo album, "What Lies Beneath", for a late 2010 release. She writes on her blog, "Some of you were wondering that 17 songs is quite much for an album. Not all the songs are going to end up on the actual album. We need bonus tracks and b-sides for different territories and singles. In the worldwide release, there are always countries asking for bonuses. On my album you can expect to have around 11-12 songs. I am lucky though to have more than enough material."
She adds, "The band recordings are pretty much done now. We still need the keyboards and cello parts. These two instruments are not going to be recorded here at Petrax, but both Christian (Kretschmar) and Max (Lilja) are recording in their home studios.
"We had some guests in Hollola today. Max helped us to contact musicians from Lahti Symphony Orchestra to record a string quartet. Max played himself the cello parts and did the arrangement for the quartet. The recordings went really well and the sound I was seeking for was accomplished.
"I read in the blog that many [fans] were surprised to see how fast the recordings are progressing. Have in mind that we have been working, discussing and living with these songs for nearly two years in some cases. So at the moment of the actual recording, everything is very clear already.
"Tomorrow the vocal session will begin, so wish me good luck."
Turunen previously stated about "What Lies Beneath", "The process for my second album started back in June 2008. Among the first songs that my friends and I composed at that time, a character called Naiad was born. The fantasy story of Naiad gave me the idea for the album title and for the whole album concept: 'What Lies Beneath'.
"It has been wonderful to be able to brainstorm again and decide the direction the album is going to take. I hope that you will be surprised again by my work; because that's the way I like it."
Turunen will perform a special "Classic and Divine" opera rock show with a symphonic orchestra and choir on June 12, 2010 at the Miskolc International Opera Festival at at the Miskolc Ice Hall in Miskolc, Hungary. Tarja's two-hour set will include a selection of the best-loved songs from her "My Winter Storm" solo album, classical gems, unpredictable rock covers, tracks from her career with NIGHTWISH, and songs from her upcoming album, "What Lies Beneath". She will be accompanied by her own band, a symphonic orchestra and a choir.
Turunen recently recorded three songs for a Finnish Christmas album, produced by Olli Ahvenlahti. According to Turunen, this was "a charity project for missionary workers in Finland."
Tarja's last album, "My Winter Storm", was re-released in January 2009. This double CD "extended special edition" was packed with 32 tracks, including the CD "My Winter Storm" with the addition of the song "The Seer" in its original version. The bonus disc presented several new tracks, remixes and live recordings. Among them, the new song "Enough" and "The Seer", this time featuring a duet with German rock star Doro Pesch.

AVENGED SEVENFOLD Taps DREAM THEATER Drummer For New Album
 Orange County, California's AVENGED SEVENFOLD has tapped DREAM THEATER's Mike Portnoy to play on the band's forthcoming album following the recent passing of AVENGED SEVENFOLD drummer James "The Rev" Sullivan.
"[We] want our fans to know that with Jimmy in our hearts, our journey to record has officially began," AVENGED SEVENFOLD said in a statement.
"Jimmy helped leave this world an amazing gift and now it's our job to make sure to deliver that gift to our fans.
"We asked Jimmy's all-time favorite drummer Mike Portnoy to record on behalf of him. Mike said it would be an honor and without question that's what Jim would have wanted.
"It's comforting to us that someone like Mike, who is undoubtedly revered as one of the best drummers in the world, held such respect and adoration for the Rev's abilities.
"Even though it will never be the same without our brother by our side, his essence lives in our hearts and through the music he helped create. He was a legend before any of the success or any of that bullshit and we are fucking excited to lay this down for our fans, and especially for Jimmy."
Sullivan was found dead at his Huntington Beach home on December 28.
The Orange County coroner's office ordered "toxicology, microscopic and laboratory tests" to help determine why Sullivan died.

OLYMPOS MONS Call It Quits
 Ian E Highhill, frontman for Finnish metallers OLYMPOS MONS has issued the following update:
"Olympos Mons split up...
The reason for the split up is part personal problems and part due to some band members lack of interest in committing themselves enough to the band. Still, some of us like myself will continue in other projects so watch out for us you have not seen the last of us yet!
