STATIC-X Release Official Video For New Single "Hollow" Single Featuring Vocals Of Late Frontman WAYNE STATIC

Static-X have released an official video for their new song, "Hollow", taken from the band's forthcoming album, Project Regeneration. The record features the last recordings of late frontman, Wayne Static, and will be released on May 29th.

Bassist Tony Campos comments: "This song was originally a demo from the Start A War album, which was never completed. Wayne and I never felt like the music on the original demo was fully realized. The vocals sounded great, but some of the musical compositions from that time period felt a bit experimental. There is a reason that some of these tracks never made it on a previous Static-X album, and it certainly wasn't because of Wayne's vocals. The band was just going through a lot of changes at that time and, in retrospect, it felt like we were straying away from that authentic Static-X sound that had really defined us."

Project Generation will feature the last recordings of Wayne Static. Back in March 2019, Static-X revealed some details with regards to the making of the album:

"After announcing Project Regeneration to the world, we unexpectedly uncovered even more unreleased tracks left behind by Wayne. Because of this, the album will have fewer guest vocalists and more complete songs featuring lead vocals by Wayne Static. In the end, we couldn’t be more excited about the music that we are making together and we know that Wayne would be honored and proud. These extra tracks creates a lot of unexpected work for us and for our producers. As a result, our timeline has been thrown off a little bit.

Right now, we are focused on finishing 12 tracks for Project Regeneration. Wayne's lead vocals will appear on more than half of the album. His fingerprints and those of the original WDT lineup are all over this record."

SEPULTURA's DERRICK GREEN: Music Streaming Services Killed Physical Media Sales

In a new interview with Ladies In Rock, SEPULTURA frontman Derrick Green spoke about the changes in the music industry today compared to how it was when the band first started out in the early 1980s. He said (hear audio below): "I think what's changed a lot is the technology. The fact that everything is streamed digitally really killed the idea of people buying actual CDs or albums, and things like that, or cassettes. It's moved on to digital phase, where it's really limited the artist in the income — just for the fact that there's many different places to stream music and the artist doesn't get a large percentage of that at all; they get a very small percentage. So you're not making the money from sales of an actual product.

"SEPULTURA was never a band that was really making a lot of money from the actual sale of product; they were making a lot from live shows or from our own official merchandise," he explained. "So, this has changed a lot, I think, for a lot of bands. But it's also changed for the fact that bands have to be more aware of what's going on business-wise and be more involved in that aspect, which is actually a good thing. But you have to think creatively in order to create this income that's needed in order to go on tour to bring crew people to work with you to make the shows happen. And so this has really stepped up, I think, for a lot of artists to be more involved in what's going on in the business aspect.

"I think the ability to spread your music and your work is great with technology, because you're able to do that within seconds now with the Internet worldwide, and so being able to reach so many different people is phenomenal," Green added. "I think that's definitely changed from the past, where you're able to hit certain markets in the world that you were never able to before, and that allows you the ability to possibly do tours in those areas because of that technology and that ability to reach them."

SEPULTURA's latest album, "Quadra", was released on February 7 via Nuclear Blast Records. The disc is a concept effort created at Sweden's Fascination Street Studios with renowned producer Jens Bogren. It will be followed by a world tour starting in March.

SEPULTURA comprises Green, guitarist Andreas Kisser, bassist Paulo Xisto Pinto Jr., and drummer Eloy Casagrande.

MIKE PORTNOY Looks Back On His Exit From DREAM THEATER: 'It Was Something I Had To Do'

Mike Portnoy spoke about his decision to leave DREAM THEATER during a career-spanning interview with "Everyone Loves Guitar", the podcast hosted by Craig Garber.

Portnoy, who co-founded DREAM THEATER 35 years ago, abruptly quit the band in September 2010 while on tour with AVENGED SEVENFOLD. He has since been replaced by Mike Mangini (ANNIHILATOR, EXTREME, JAMES LABRIE, STEVE VAI).

Asked what the experience of leaving a band like DREAM THEATER was like for him, Portnoy said (see video below): "It was one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make. Twenty-five years. It was my baby — from formation to all the way, the level that the band was at at that point, twenty-five years later. And there was a lot of perseverance to get there, so to walk away from it was one of the hardest things I'll ever have to do, really. It's something I had to do, 'cause after twenty-five years… And during that time, I was always the most hands-on guy in the band. I think since then, they've gone on to delegate things and share things, but it's easy to forget at this point that at that stage, I was the one that was overseeing the merchandise and the fan clubs and the web sites and the music and the lyrics and the melodies and the production — all that stuff. And it was exhausting… I just needed a break. I was burnt. I was burnt out on all of that… It was something I had to do, or else I would have been regretful."

He continued: "People ask, 'Do you have any regrets about that?' I love the quote, '[I'd] rather regret something [I] have done than something [I] haven't done.' And I think that's where I was at — I was at a point where if I had stayed, I probably would have been resentful for all the things that I was not able to do. Because I was starting to feel trapped, and they wanted me to commit to a certain date to start the next record, and I just wasn't ready. And it became a Mexican standoff, really. And I went with my heart and said, 'Look, I'd rather regret something I have done than something I haven't.' And I'm not saying I do regret it, 'cause I don't. Because look at what I've done since then. I mean, I look at the last decade since I left — I've made 40 albums with dozens of different bands… Those are opportunities I've been able to pursue and wouldn't have if I had not followed my heart."

Asked what he learned from the whole episode, Portnoy said: "I learned that the Internet is a very scary thing, because that first year after the split, I just couldn't say anything without it becoming these giant clickbait headlines on these web sites. No matter what I said, no matter how tastefully or gracefully I tried to say it, it always got twisted and misinterpreted and turned into some sort of catchphrase clickbait headline. So I learned, especially in that first year after I left, that I had to just really be careful what I said, or don't say anything at all. I had to start to tread carefully. Because we live in this age now where everything is in real time, and people, the Internet trolls, just love to bury you — they love to run with whatever they can.

"When I was growing up, if somebody left a band, when Peter Criss left KISS, you had to wait a month to read about it in Circus magazine," he said. "Or you'd join the fan clubs to get the newsletters to get the information on these bands. When I was a kid, you had to really wait to find out the news and find out the dirt. Nowadays, we live in a time where everything is in real time. When I left DREAM THEATER, I made a post on my web site, just explaining what was happening, and then five minutes later, it just exploded. And people were acting as if I put out some sort of press release. It wasn't a press release — it was my feelings and my explanation of what happened.

"So I learned, through that whole process, you've gotta be very, very careful what you say, how you say it, or if you should even say something at all or not say anything at all. These days, I try not to even talk about DREAM THEATER at all. I can already see what we're talking about here is going to become a headline, and people are gonna be, like, 'Why is he lingering on DREAM THEATER?'

"The point is that people don't realize, when they see this quote on Blabbermouth, that it's coming from a thing called an interview. And what these things do is a journalist will ask the artist a question, and I like to answer the question as honestly as I can, or don't answer it at all if I choose not to. But I'm not lingering on these things — I'm answering a question that you're asking about my career and my life and the split. And that's what we do — we do interviews. If you can't be honest, or can't handle it, then you shouldn't do interviews. But in my case, I like to be open and honest with the listeners and the fans."

GIRLSCHOOL Members Recall Meeting MOTÖRHEAD's LEMMY The First Time: 'It Was Like Serendipity'

In an interview with TotalRock Radio's Dawn Osbourne prior to their January 30 show at London Underworld in London, England, United Kingdom, members of veteran all-girl British hard rockers GIRLSCHOOL recalled their first encounter with legendary MOTÖRHEAD frontman Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister. The two bands teamed up for the 1981 "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" EP that featured Kilmister joining GIRLSCHOOL on a cover of JOHNNY KIDD & THE PIRATES' "Please Don't Touch", while each band recorded one of each other's songs, with GIRLSCHOOL tackling MOTÖRHEAD's "Bomber" and MOTÖRHEAD recording GIRLSCHOOL's "Emergency".

"When we did our first single, 'Take It All The Way', Lemmy, actually, at the same time, was looking for a support band for their first major British tour, the 'Overkill' tour," said guitarist/vocalist Kim McAuliffe (see video below). "He heard about us and he heard our single, and he came down to see us at rehearsal, just to meet us. We clicked. I still remember the first time — MOTÖRHEAD wasn't really that well known at that point either. We've just seen photos of them and heard their [single], 'Motörhead', which, funny enough, somebody had given us the 'Motörhead' [single]. Me and Kelly [Johnson, guitar] go 'Bloody hell!' We listened to it and go 'What the hell!' Then a couple of months later, we heard that Lemmy wanted to meet us. It was like serendipity. It all fell into place."

GIRLSCHOOL also shared a story on how Johnson, who passed away in 2007 from a six-year battle with spinal cancer, posthumously appeared on the band's 2008 "Legacy" studio album. The band took an unconventional route and placed her ashes into the maracas heard on the album's lead-off track, "Everything's The Same".

"The story of it is, when she was ill, I was seated in the hospice," said guitarist Jackie Chambers. "I said, 'We got to get you on this album somehow.' I had written this song called 'From The Other Side', and she was going to come and sing the response. Kim would sing, 'I'll meet you from the other side,' and [Kelly would sing], 'I'll greet you from the other side,' because she knew she was going to die. It's kind of joking; she was playing with it. Anyway, she died before we did the album. She told me to share out her ashes between these little urns. We come up with the idea, a ghostly appearance by Kelly Johnson."

Added McAuliffe: "We're all in the pub one day: 'Wouldn't it be funny if we shook her ashes?' It started off as a bit of a joke, really."

Said Chambers, "We actually asked her mom and dad for permission. We knew that Kelly would have thought it was hilarious. We just stood in the studio doing this [shaking maracas]."

McAuliffe: "We said to [producer] Tim [Hamill] at the time, 'What is the weirdest thing you've ever recorded?' He said 'This has got to be it.'"

A year ago, GIRLSCHOOL parted ways with longtime bassist Enid Williams. She has since been replaced by Tracey Lamb (formerly of ROCK GODDESS), who previously played with GIRLSCHOOL from 1987 to 1991 and from 1993 to 2000.

GIRLSCHOOL's 13th studio album, "Guilty As Sin", was released in November 2015 in North America via UDR Music. The disc was produced by Chris Tsangarides (JUDAS PRIEST, THIN LIZZY) at the Ecology Room Studios in Kent, England.

MARK MORTON Says Releasing Solo Material Has Brought More 'Clarity' And 'Focus' To His Work With LAMB OF GOD

LAMB OF GOD guitarist Mark Morton recently discussed his new solo acoustic EP, "Ether", with Topher of Moshville Times. The full conversation can be viewed below. A few excerpts follow (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

On how his guitar playing has evolved over the years:

Mark: "Probably the primary difference between my approach to playing now versus earlier in my career [and] earlier in the band's trajectory, I think these days I'm far more focused on songwriting. I'm more interested in the song as a whole rather than lead work or individual riffs. It depends also on what I'm doing. Within the context of LAMB OF GOD, it's very riff-driven, but I more these days look at the big picture of the song overall. Certainly in my solo work, it's more songwriting-based. There are riffs, but it's more about the song, more about songcraft, I think."

On the differences in how he approaches writing for different outlets:

Mark: "In terms of creative and stylistic freedom, I think a band like LAMB OF GOD has been around for over 20 years, so there's an established identity to the band. When I'm writing for that band, writing with that band, it's certainly important to me to respect the identity and character of the band, and the legacy and the body of work that we've created. I sort of work within the framework [and] within the context of all of that. With the solo stuff I've been doing the last couple years, it's a little more open-ended. It's kind of new for me to be releasing stuff like this, so it's a bit more open-ended creatively. I'm allowed to kind of define what I want it to be at the base level. In a sense, there's more freedom. There's room to make mistakes as well. It's challenging, but I'm having a great time with it."

On "Ether":

Mark: "The idea to go acoustic for this new EP was really born out of the experience of having had opportunities to perform acoustically in support of 'Anesthetic'. I played the Sonic Temple festival last summer — I did a side stage show there. LAMB was playing the big stage, and I did a solo acoustic thing on the side, and Mark Lanegan came and sang with me, and Mark Morales came and sang with me. He's my touring singer — he's on both releases. Jacoby Shaddix from PAPA ROACH came and did a song with us. That went really cool. At Download last summer, I did a set in the Zippo tent with Jason from FEVER 333, and Mark was with me again. Those experiences were great, and it was really well-received. It went over great, so it kind of planted the seed of taking that approach to doing some shows like that, and I got the idea of doing a recording like that to give us a reason to do shows like that. It just all sort of swirled around and became its own sort of campaign... It was really exciting it see it come together. It came together very fast, and it's that's kind of a different process than 'Anesthetic' was. 'Anesthetic' took two and a half years to write and record, mainly because of my schedule with LAMB OF GOD. I was doing it on breaks and in between [tours], working on it when I had free space to do that. 'Ether' was done very quickly. Everything was written and recorded in a matter of maybe two or three months. The three originals were all brand new. They weren't things I was sitting on — I wrote them specifically for the project. Everything happened really fast, so it was an interesting experience for me to see one project that was really drawn out and took a long time, so I was able to sit with the stuff and make changes as we went, whereas 'Ether' was like, 'Let's go. Let's do it. Just commit.' I'm really proud of them both. We just got to the end goal in different ways... When I sat down two months to start writing, I didn't really know what I was going to do. I just picked up an acoustic guitar and sat at a stool at the bar in my kitchen and just started playing, and making little recordings when I found something cool and just putting the songs together."

On covering THE BLACK CROWES classic "She Talks To Angels":

Mark: "I had the idea of doing that song, but I didn't just want to do that song again. That's one of the songs where if you're going to redo it, you should probably just do something different because you're not going to recreate the original for the sake of doing that. The idea was to have a woman singing it to change the protagonist, to give it kind of a different angle, and Lzzy [Hale], she just did such an amazing job with it. She's got such an incredible voice. I hit her up with the idea, and she was all for it... Lzzy's vocal performance was the only one I wasn't there for. She recorded that at her own studio in Nashville. We mixed it, dropped it in... I was just blown away. To hear it for the first time, it was like getting a Christmas present."

On whether making solo recordings has changed how he approaches LAMB OF GOD:

Mark: "Now that I've started doing solo projects and releasing them and establishing the fact that I'm doing that, these types of outside-of-metal things, they never really had a destination. I was always writing stuff that wasn't going to be for LAMB OF GOD that was on acoustic or was more rock or whatever, and I would work on stuff like that for fun, but I didn't really ever have an idea of where it could live, where it could have a space to exist and develop and be turned into real songs. Now, when I come up with something like that, I potentially [have] a place for it to go, so that feels pretty exciting. I think it's helped me overall when I'm working on LAMB to have more of a clarity and a focus — what my role is, and what my job should be in LAMB. If I have all these kind of rock ideas or more melodic ideas or more gentle, acoustic ideas, there have been times where I've tried to kind of shove that stuff into the context of LAMB. I've had some good results with that, but a lot of times, it can be frustrating trying to make something work that's not supposed to be there or forcing it. Now, I feel like having an outlet for this stuff has really freed me up to have more clarity in my focus with LAMB."

On standing on his own:

Mark: "If it was pressure, it was anxiety. It started with 'Anesthetic'. I really didn't have any kind of idea how I would be accepted or taken seriously outside of LAMB OF GOD. I always knew that I was writing songs, and I felt like it was getting better and I was coming on to some cool stuff, but I didn't know if my fans in LAMB OF GOD would come with me to something that was more rock and a little more melodic, a little more commercial-sounding. I didn't know if people that weren't fans of LAMB were willing to take me seriously on my own in these collaborations with these great artists. There was a little bit of anxiety there, but ultimately, I just did it because I'm a musician and I make music, and I had the opportunity to do it so I seized it. As it turns out, it was really well-received. It's been an amazing couple of years... I think with 'Ether', I had a little bit more legs under me, but it's acoustic. It's a bit of a different thing. We'll see what people think."

"Ether" — produced and mixed by Josh Wilbur (LAMB OF GOD, GOJIRA, TRIVIUM) — was released on January 10 via Rise Records/BMG. The five-song, primarily acoustic EP features appearances by Hale, Howard Jones (KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, LIGHT THE TORCH), John Carbone (MOON TOOTH) and Morales.

COREY TAYLOR Has A Problem With How Music Streaming Services 'Rip Off The Artist'

In a brand new interview with the Irish Times, Corey Taylor was asked if a successful band like SLIPKNOT could survive just on royalties from streaming sales. He responded: "You could if the streaming system wasn't set up the way it is. You are being paid less than pennies. In the United States, they have passed the legislation (the Music Modernization Act 2018) but it is being appealed. I am hoping that it will be struck down. If the streaming systems paid more online with how publishing in radio pays — people could make a living."

He continued: "I have had friends of mine who have had to retire, and they are popular bands, because they can't make a living. Mid-card bands and lower, it is hard for them. It almost pays better to play the local pub and do the door deal. You make more money doing that than making an album. Labels don't take the same chances but they are taking the lion's share of the money because of the way it is set up.

"Until the artist is paid fairly, it is going to be a constant fucking battle," he added. "I saw this coming years ago. I haven't got a problem with streaming. I have got a problem with how these streaming services rip off the artist and I'll say that until the day I die."

Asked what the going rate is for a million streams, Taylor said: "The lowest rate is YouTube. A million streams on YouTube is 0.04 per cent of a penny. On a million streams you get $400 and that’s just me doing shitty math in my head. People can't live on that and there's not a lot of people who get these numbers. The majority of this goes to the record label anyway. The streaming services are not willing to pay the talents who write the songs and makes the music and yet they are sitting on billions of dollars. They are buying whole blocks of buildings and then taking over floors in there and yet they don't want to pay the people who made the money for them. It's insane. It's tough all over in a lot of ways. Something has to change. I don't know what that will be."

In January 2019, the Copyright Royalty Board ruled the royalties songwriters receive from on-demand subscription streaming would jump 44 percent over the next five years. Spotify, Google, Pandora and Amazon — four of the major U.S. streaming services — later appealed the ruling, saying that it "harms music licensees and copyright owners."

Last year, Corey told Rock Feed that the vast majority of artists don't own their masters (original or master recordings before the revenue split is calculated between involved groups) — the record labels do — which has affected their bottom line greatly.

"It's a very occurrence [that a group will own its masters]," he said. "I can think of maybe three bands that have been able to do that. METALLICA is one. MÖTLEY [CRÜE] is the other. I'm not sure about AC/DC. But I know there are a handful of bands that actually own the masters and the rights for them. But we are talking about bands that not only own their masters, they also own the label that they release stuff out of. METALLICA has Blackened; MÖTLEY has Motley Records. It's a very small class or group. You have to be done with your contracts — the original that you signed in the first place — and ready to go on to an independent basis to be able to do anything like that. And for bands like us, and probably a million other bands out there, you just simply don't have the money to do it."

Back in 2015, Taylor said that record labels were continuing to lose the digital music battle or piracy war because they couldn't "catch up with the technology." He said during an appearance on the "Eddie Trunk Podcast": "On one hand, you've got people who are streaming, but then they use that to decide whether or not they wanna buy the album, as opposed to illegal downloading. But then there's the other side of it where people are kind of using it as, basically, satellite radio, where it's, like, 'I'm just gonna listen to this.' But people still pay a subscription for it. So, in one way or another, the economy is still working. It's just that… We can't catch up with the technology; that's the problem. There's so many innovations that the powers that be can't figure out… they can't get ahead of it."

Ex-JUDAS PRIEST Singer TIM 'RIPPER' OWENS: 'I'm Like A Middle-Of-The-Road Guy In Politics'

In a brand new interview with Meltdown of Detroit's WRIF radio station, former JUDAS PRIEST singer Tim "Ripper" Owens was asked for his opinion on musicians expressing their political views, either through their music or via social media. Owens responded: "If you don't like somebody, or you don't like an angle, or you don't like whatever, to wish death upon people and hatred — I watch these people post that. I'm, like, 'Man, you are absolutely crazy.' But it's what it is. Everybody can have their opinion; I don't have to agree with it.

"Listen, if anybody thinks stuff about me — I'm like a middle-of-the-road guy in politics," he continued. "I don't really talk too much about it. My Facebook page and my Instagram and Twitter pages aren't filled with it. I don't post about it — I might like something, but I don't post it. I kind of call it common sense — I think whatever is right, I kind of think is right. But, man, when someone thinks you're one way… I'm not joking about it. This never happened in the past. Eight years ago, four years ago, ten years ago, this stuff didn't happen — I get messages wishing death upon my family if I don't believe in their political views. And it's the craziest thing I've ever seen. I've never done that in my life.

"If I have someone in music or an artist that just constantly posts crap — that I think is crap — all the time, that doesn't agree with me, I just don't follow them. I don't unfriend them — I just don't [wanna] look at it. Or if there's a song [with political lyrics], I don't have to listen to it anymore, if I don't agree with it. Or I still might like the song and still listen to it — I don't have to agree with it.

"It's so strange nowadays," Owens added. "I've never seen anything like this. It's weird — [people] don't even give things a chance, and they just kind of go off one way or the other — left, right [or] the middle. But the hatred that they do, you never would have gotten away with that years ago — period. Period. I mean, you wouldn't get away with half the stuff that people do, and it's kind of crazy."

According to Owens, the widespread use of social media has reshaped and redefined the ways in which we communicate and express ourselves, including facilitating an explosion in bullying and shaming.

"People can do what they want," he said. "If it's your opinion, but you're using hate to spew it, or wishing bad things upon other people because they don't agree, that's what I don't like it.

"It's been done in music and TV for years — forever — but when you didn't agree with it, you didn't say, 'I hope you die,'" he continued. "That's what's changed. You used to listen to [somebody], 'Yeah, I don't agree with that. But I'll still listen to John Lennon, even though I agree with him. I don't agree with what THE BEATLES are saying, but I'll still listen to 'em.' But now it's kind of weird."

"Social media has been around for 10 years now, but it's just really happened in the last couple of years where people feel like hatred is okay. Political parties didn't use to spew as much hatred as what happens in the world now. They might have thought it, but you didn't post pictures of people getting their throats slit. … But that's what people do now. It's a weird world now. And social media did it. Now people slowly can realize, 'You know what? I'm probably pretty safe by telling Tim I hope his family dies, because I don't like what he agrees with.' So that's just the way it is. That shows you the mentality of some people."

Owens, who frequently "likes" tweets that support President Donald Trump's policies and that are derogatory to Democrats, weighed in on the U.S. presidential race back in 2016, saying that Trump was perhaps what America needed to move the country forward. Claiming that he wasn't a Democrat or a Republican ("I'm in the middle," he said), Owens explained that he couldn't vote for Hillary Clinton because of "the way they tax people." He went on to say that America "had eight years of really bad" under President Barack Obama and opined that "a lot of American people" were "just trying to figure out something other than what [Obama] was doing."

Back in 2012, Owens revealed in an interview that he was voting for Mitt Romney in that year's election.

MY DYING BRIDE's AARON STAINTHORPE On 'The Ghost Of Orion': 'It's A Very Rich Album'

France's United Rock Nations recently conducted an interview with frontman Aaron Stainthorpe of British doom metal veterans MY DYING BRIDE. You can listen to the entire chat below. A few excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

On what to expect from MY DYING BRIDE's forthcoming studio album, "The Ghost Of Orion":

Aaron: "You could expect a lot, really, because we've put a lot into it. There's lots and lots of guitars, more guitars than any other record we've ever done, even though there's only one guitar player, because Calvin [Robertshaw] left before the recording began. So that meant Andrew [Craighan] did all the guitars, and because he had free rein to do whatever he liked, he did lots and lots and lots of guitars, so it sounds pretty amazing. And, of course, we got violins and keyboards and bass. We have Lindy-Fay Hella from WALDRUNA doing some vocals. Jo Quail is playing cello. I've been doing lots and lots of different vocals, so it's a very rich album. There's lots of things going on. There's death metal vocals, clean vocals, there's whispering, there's all kinds of stuff — enough variety, I think, to keep most MY DYING BRIDE fans happy. Of course, there will always be some that complain, but there is with every album."

On the lyrical themes on "The Ghost Of Orion":

Aaron: "It materializes in the same way that most [albums] do. You write about the things you know about; you look back at your history in MY DYING BRIDE and you try to make the music you write today better than the music you wrote on the last album. Our last album, 'Feel The Misery', got some very good reviews, which means we have to work even harder for the new album to make it better than the last album, but that's good. It's a good challenge. It makes you try harder, it makes you force yourself to be better every single time, so that's always good. And you evolve. As you get older, you change, your interests change, your influences change — not by much, but they change just enough to add variety to the new things you create. Although when you hear the album, of course, you will know it's MY DYING BRIDE, but it still has enough fresh ideas to keep it interesting for everybody because we don't want to write the same songs over and over again, and the fans don't want to hear the same songs over and over again. You have to have some fresh variety."

On which artists inspired MY DYING BRIDE during the creation of "The Ghost Of Orion":

Aaron: "Various artists do, but that doesn't necessarily mean we will sound like them. I'm a big fan of NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS, but even though I listen to them and it makes me want to write, I don't write the same way Nick Cave writes, but it's still an inspiration. In the same way the music inspires Andrew sometimes, but it doesn't mean he's going to write in that style. It just wakes something up in your mind and allows you to pursue your own ideas even though it was started by something completely different. I think a lot of artists do that because if you take too much inspiration from somebody, you will begin to sound like them. And when you start to sound like somebody else, that means you're doing it wrong. It's fine to have inspiration, but you can't rip people off."

On the decision to sign with Nuclear Blast Records after spending MY DYING BRIDE's entire career with Peaceville Records:

Aaron: "We were on Peaceville Records for many, many years, and they were great. They did everything they could for MY DYING BRIDE, which is wonderful. But we thought MY DYING BRIDE had more to offer, so we were hoping that when the contract with Peaceville came to an end, we might find a bigger label. Now, we knew Nuclear Blast was one of the coolest labels to be on, so we hoped they would be interested. Thankfully, they were interested. We got a contract from Nuclear Blast and it was wonderful, so we said 'goodbye' to Peaceville Records. We're still happy with Peaceville. I went out for a drink with everyone from Peaceville just on Friday night. Everything's fine; we're all still friends, so it's great, but it was time to move on. We needed to do bigger and better things, and Nuclear Blast is the perfect label to take MY DYING BRIDE further around the world to people who have never heard of us before. I think it was the right move. Yeah, the promotion has been great. We've been down to London to do lots and lots of interviews, so many interviews on Skype. It's amazing. It's great that people still find interest in MY DYING BRIDE after 30 years. The buzz so far is still amazing. We're still enjoying our honeymoon with Nuclear Blast."

"The Ghost Of Orion" will be released on March 6 via Nuclear Blast. The album's cover artwork was created by artist Eliran Kantor (TESTAMENT, ICED EARTH, SODOM).

MIKE PORTNOY: 'I've Known For About Two Years' That NEIL PEART Was Battling Brain Cancer

Mike Portnoy, a longtime friend of Neil Peart's, says that he was aware for quite a while that the late RUSH drummer was battling brain cancer. "Yeah, I've known for about two years now and was held to secrecy," the former DREAM THEATER drummer said during an appearance earlier today (Monday, January 13) on SiriusXM's "Trunk Nation". "It was something that he and everybody in his camp, obviously, went to great lengths to keep private and keep secret. And that was Neil — he was a very, very private guy.

"Even though I've known for this amount of time and I kind of have had time to psychologically prepare for [his passing] knowing that it was inevitably coming, it didn't make it any less shocking; it just took the wind out of me when I heard it on Friday. [For] the whole rest of the world that didn't know about this, this must [have come] completely out of nowhere — I can't imagine how shocking it must be."

Asked when the last contact was that he had with Peart, Mike said: "I saved all of the e-mails he sent me, and last night I went reading through a whole bunch of 'em and I broke down crying — it really hit me hard last night; I had a big, big cry reading some of these e-mails from him.

"You've read his books, you're read his tour programs, you've read his blogs on his web site, and that's the way he wrote even in his e-mails," he continued. "So whenever I would get an e-mail from him, it was very, very lengthy, very thorough, went into a lot of details of whatever he was going through.

"But in answer to your question, the last e-mail I got from him was a little over a year ago," he said. "He sent me a holiday e-mail with a photo of him in a Santa Claus hat, and some photos with his daughter, Olivia, who's been growing up. He would always send me photos of them dressed up for the holidays or reading books together and things like that.

"I feel so much gratitude and I was just so lucky and fortunate to have had that kind of relationship with him, because I know how few people did," Mike added. "So it's such an honor for me to have had that relationship with him the last 15 years or so.

"The last time I saw him was when I saw the farewell tour [in 2015] — I went and saw the show up in Boston, and I brought my son Max to see the show. And knowing that they were retiring, I knew it was possibly the last time we'd see him play — obviously, not thinking this was gonna happen. So that was the last time I saw him. And he was, as always, so generous and let Max come up and play his kit and gave Max some signed heads and sticks and opened up his dressing room to us. So that was the last time I physically saw him. And then there were two e-mails after that."

According to Portnoy, the last three days have been "surreal" as he has had to come to terms with the loss of his friend and and one of his biggest musical influences. " I've just been in a horrible fog for the last couple of days," he said. "I've been doing a lot of interviews for radio tributes like this and other things like that. So it's been nice to keep talking about Neil and remembering him and posting about him online. But it hurts, man. This one's a big one — for me, personally. I haven't felt like this since maybe John Lennon or John Bonham or Frank Zappa. It hits on that level as a fan, as it does for millions of RUSH fans around the world. But this has a whole new level for me as well, because I didn't know John Lennon or John Bonman or Frank Zappa, but Neil I did know and had a relationship with. So there's that whole level as well, which just makes it just horrible. It's just been a rough, rough weekend."

In addition to SONS OF APOLLO — whose sophomore album "MMXX" will be released on January 17 — Portnoy is currently a member of five other bands — TRANSATLANTIC; THE NEAL MORSE BAND; all-star metal collective METAL ALLEGIANCE; pop/prog supergroup FLYING COLORS; and THE WINERY DOGS.

When Peart's death was first made public on January 10, the remaining members of RUSH — guitarist Alex Lifeson and bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee — revealed in a statement that he had been diagnosed with the disease three and a half years earlier, just a few months after the band completed its final tour.

NIGHTWISH's TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN On 'Human. :II: Nature': 'It's A Concept Album Without Intending It To Be'

Arto Mäenpää of Finland's Kaaos TV recently conducted an interview with keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen and drummer Kai Hahto of Finnish/British/Dutch symphonic metallers NIGHTWISH. You can watch the entire chat below. A few excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

On how Holopainen emerged from writer's block to write the band's forthcoming "Human. :II: Nature." studio album:

Tuomas: "I just started doing songs one by one. I didn't have an idea of how the whole album would sound like. Already at that point, I knew there's going to be a long, orchestral song. I had the idea for the thematics of the songs 'Music' and 'Noise' being the first two tracks of the album. It gives a nice contrast. 'Noise' was one of the first songs I did because I felt so strongly about the subject matter that the song deals with. It had to be done in this time and age. But, yeah, the songs came one by one and at some point, I realized that, 'Hold on, almost all the songs are about humankind.' The word 'human,' the word 'nature,' they appear a lot in the lyrics. Somehow, it's a concept album without intending it to be. Then, at some point, it became clear to me that 'Hold on. Clearly, nine songs sang by a human voice about humanity about humans, then we have the nature epic, the instrumental second point. How about calling this album 'Human. :II: Nature.'? There's also a lovely little wordplay because it's also about human nature, how we are as species."

On whether it was intentional for NIGHTWISH to separate the tracks into a double album:

Tuomas: "Absolutely, as a whole album. It's just because the album clocks at 85 minutes or something like that, so you cannot fit it into one album. The idea was never to do a double album, but because we can't fit all the material into one CD [laughs], you have to have another one. It's simple as that."

On whether "Human. :II: Nature." is a more of a band effort than previous NIGHTWISH studio albums:

Tuomas: "We left the full orchestra for the first nine tracks, so that left a lot of space for the instruments and the vocals. That was a deliberate decision. Then, the orchestra comes full-on for the last symphonic epic. But I think when it comes to the process of doing the album, the formula was pretty much the same as the previous albums. I tried to do the songs as finished as possible on my own, then I introduce them to the band, then we start the process from scratch again."

On the prominent contributions from NIGHTWISH's three vocalists: lead singer Floor Jansen, bassist Marco Hietala and multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley:

Tuomas: "It's a result of many different things. We just realized that we hadn't really fulfilled the full potential of the three vocalists in the band because all of them have their unique sound, all are truly incredible singers, so why not do a vocal-oriented album, especially the first half of the album? Let's do an album for singers. Do every single chorus in three harmonies, and that's what we ended up doing."

On the amount of work Jansen had to put in to record her vocals on "Human. :II: Nature." :

Tuomas: "A lot. Really, really a lot. But she took the challenge; she really enjoyed the process and in the end, she made them sound so easy. But, when you start to listen to them, you realize that it's not an easy task because she's not only singing them beautifully but also telling the story. You become hypnotized by her interpretation, especially if you have the lyrics and read the story and understand what the songs are about, especially songs like 'Music', where the lyric is really important. But, also Marco and Troy — just incredible work throughout the album."

On whether Holopainen "pushed" his bandmates for their best performances:

Tuomas: "Yes. It's not like I was like the dictator and whipping them. [Laughs] I mean, everybody seemed to truly enjoy the process and wanted to give it their best. Also, with the engineer, the mixing engineer, mastering engineer, ToxicAngel [Janne Pitkänen], who did all the cover artwork. He worked with them for about 18 months. So everybody put everything into this album…it's just the ultimate feeling to have, the dedication that people have."

On the concept behind the "Human" part of the album:

Tuomas: "It's nine songs that have some connection to the species of human. I'm not going to go into them one by one, but there is a connection. For example, song number five called 'Pan' is an ode to human imagination. Song number six ['How's The Heart?'] is an ode to human empathy. And so on."

On the instrumental that comprises disc 2, "All The Works Of Nature Which Adorn The World":

Tuomas: "It just occurred to us that in the NIGHTWISH catalog of songs, we have never done a big, fully orchestral piece. Now it was the time to do it because you have nine songs about humans, then you want to go out into nature and relax there without the human voice. So, it was the perfect timing to do this kind of song. It's our love letter to planet earth."

"Human. :II: Nature." will be released on April 10 via Nuclear Blast. The long-awaited follow-up to 2015's "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" will be a double album containing nine tracks on the main CD and one long track, divided into eight chapters on CD 2.

"Human. :II: Nature." was recorded from August to October 2019 at Röskö campsite, Petrax Studios and Troykington castle, as well as Finnvox Studios, by Tero Kinnunen, Mikko Karmila and Troy Donockley. The mixing was done by Mikko Karmila at Finnvox, with Tuomas Holopainen and Tero Kinnunen. Mastering was done by Mika Jussila at Finnvox.

PRETTY MAIDS Singer RONNIE ATKINS Announces He Is Cancer-Free

PRETTY MAIDS singer Ronnie Atkins says that he is cancer-free.

The Danish musician broke the news of his lung cancer diagnosis in October via the band's Facebook page.

He wrote in an open letter to the PRETTY MAIDS fans that his illness "came totally unexpected without any typical symptoms."

Earlier today, Atkins released the following update via the band's social media:

"Some good news ! A couple of days ago I had the fantastic message that there are no more signs of cancer to be seen/tracked based on the scans that I had taken recently. That's the best news I have had in a long time, thank god.

"As for everyone who's encountered cancer, I'm fully aware that it doesn't necessarily mean that I'm 'homesafe' and the next 5 years are so to speak crucial, but nevertheless it's a big step in the right direction and a great relief for me and my family.

"To avoid or lower the chances of reoccurrences the doctors have reccomended me to undergo immunotherapy for the next year, which I've naturally agreed to and allready started up.

"Now it's time to recuperate, regain some strength and knock myself back into shape, witch I'm eager to do. There will/might be some sequelae that I have to deal with, but so be it. That's life.

"With the risk of being accused of repeating myself I once again wanna express my sincere thanx to all of you out there ( my army of beautiful souls ) who's been supporting me through out this with sweet greetings, messages, advice and prayers. It's been heart warming and I'm forever grateful."

Atkins underwent at least 33 radiation and four chemotherapy treatments last fall before being declared cancer-free.

All of PRETTY MAIDS' previously announced shows were canceled and all of the group's plans were put "on hold" while Ronnie underwent treatment.

Formed in early 1982 by Atkins and guitarist Ken Hammer, PRETTY MAIDS quickly established itself as a band to be taken seriously. In April 1987, "Future World", the band's third album recorded in the USA, was released to great acclaim and is still today regarded as a "classic."

After the release of the follow-up album "Jump The Gun" (produced by DEEP PURPLE's Roger Glover), PRETTY MAIDS in 1991 were on the verge of a breakup. However, Hammer and Atkins found a new rhythm section and in 1992 released the "Sin - Decade", a record that would reveal that PRETTY MAIDS was still a force to be reckoned with, despite the fact that the metal scene now was overrun by the grunge movement. "Sin - Decade" became a huge success in Japan and gave the band a big radio hit with the single "Please Don't Leave Me", laying the foundation for the band in the East that would last for the next decade.

During the ensuing years, PRETTY MAIDS continued to release albums usually followed by European and Japanese tours.

In a 2013 interview with Myglobalmind, Atkins joked that the secret to keeping his voice in shape was "twenty cigarettes a day and little drink now and then."

PRETTY MAIDS' latest album, "Undress Your Madness", was released in November via Frontiers Music Srl.

Statement from Ronnie:

Some good news !

A couple of days ago I had the fantastic message that there are no more signs...

STEEL PANTHER Guitarist SATCHEL Performs Live Acoustic Version Of FIGHT Classic "Into The Pit" (Video)

BraveWords was contacted by one Metal Matt, who informed us he performed an acoustic version of the Fight classic "Into The Pit" with none other than Steel Panther guitarist, Satchel. For those that may be unaware, Satchel's alter ego is "Russ Parrish", who recorded and toured for Fight's 1993 debut album, War Of Words.

Matt: "This was just insane. Took the opportunity to sing an epic track by Rob Halford's amazing Fight band, we made history and played it for the first time acoustic! It was just surreal having Satchel there next to me playing this track. Dreams do come true. Huge thanks to Steel Panther for being the nicest guys in the business. DEATH TO ALL BUT METAL!!"

Australia’s VICTORIA K Signs To Rockshot Records; Debut Out In April

Rockshots Records has announced their signing of Australia's Victoria K for the release of her debut album Essentia coming April 2020. The full length was produced by Lee Bradshaw and features special guest Michalina Malisz (Eluveitie).

The Melbourne singer/songwriter has made her mark on the rock and metal scene with the release of her debut single 'Monster' in 2016, featuring guitar work by Brett Garsed (John Farnham Band) along with her 2019 follow up track 'Lacuna' distributed in Australia and New Zealand by Warner Music Group (Australia) and is the lead single off the upcoming album.

The single garnered a lot of media praise and created an opportunity for Victoria K to support Swiss folk metal giants Eluveitie for their May 2019 tour date in Melbourne, a performance that had the crowd chanting for an encore.

Although the album was originally a solo project, it has now developed into the current band structure with each member bringing their own energy and experience to the collective.  The band is looking forward to collaborating on future releases and is now heavily focused on the release of this debut full length in April 2020.

Victoria K adds:

"'Essentia' is Latin for Essence.  Essence is the indispensable quality of something that determines its very nature or character.  So I guess the album as a whole tries to tackle and define the very nature of humanity. In a way, I’m trying to unravel the complexity of human essence and emotion.  It all hopefully leads to being struck by a moment of Sonder - therefore the realization that everyone, including strangers, has a life as complex as our own, despite our lack of awareness of it."

Victoria K's talented songwriting and compositional influences include Evanescence, Within Temptation, Nightwish and Kamelot amongst other current bands in the European metal scene and her music have been likened to be a blend of these influences. Victoria K has racked up hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube with her own original creations and through featured videos alongside a number of talented musicians covering a plethora of songs. Victoria K's covers include Iron Maiden's "The Trooper", Nightwish's "Last Ride Of The Day", Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" and Kamelot's "Insomnia", the latter of which received attention from the band themselves on Twitter and led to a meeting of talents when the American power metal band found themselves in Melbourne during their 2018 The Shadow Theory Australian tour.

Tracklisting:

“Freedom Uncharted”
“Surreal”
“Forsaken”
“Matrix”
“Shroud Of Solitude”
“The Haunting”
“Freaks”
“Mist Filled Sky”
“Humanity”
“Lacuna”

VILLAGERS OF IOANNINA CITY Release Single, Video For “For The Innocent”

Experimental rock phenomenon Villagers Of Ioannina City electrifies with their hooky first single, “For The Innocent”, alongside a hypnotic music video. The track appears on the band’s standout album, Age Of Aquarius, set to be physically released via Napalm Records on April 3, 2020.

Alex’s crooning, unique vocals accent the sludge-woven first shades of “For The Innocent”, drawing its listener into the track as it progresses into a psychedelic rock anthem. Gritty blues guitar riffs and driving drums are accented by folk instrument contributions to form a gusty vortex. Somewhere in between blistering traditional Greek elements and swampy-tinted rock, the oscillating soundscape creates its own magical sphere.

Accompanied by mesmerizing visuals, Villagers Of Ioannina City leads the listener through a sunburned aura coalescing with hallucinating images of dreamers and wanderers of mind – The Innocent. Represented by the fans themselves, this added an extra personal touch to the video. In spellbinding mania, the artful kaleidoscopic illusions carry “For The Innocent”.

Villagers Of Ioannina City’s unique synthesis of post, kraut and psychedelic rock influences underlined by a palpable dose of heaviness and Greek folk elements precisely hits the mark.

Villagers Of Ioannina City on “For The Innocent”: "We are really really happy to present to you our new video clip! Dedicated to all the dreamers, the deviants, the immigrants of life and the wanderers of mind! To all the innocent ones!"

The region of Epirus is famous for its landscape of mammoth mountains and holy rivers – and now experimental heavy rock.  Villagers Of Ioannina City are deeply influenced by Greek nature and cosmic phenomena and infuse their unique brand of heavy psychedelic rock with folk instruments such as bagpipes, flutes and didgeridoos. German rock legends, Scorpions, continue to release classic live footage. Below you can watch the band perform "Lovedrive" at the Sun Plaza Hall in Tokyo, Japan in 1979.

Speaking to Detroit’s WRIF radio station, Scorpions guitarist Matthias Jab spoke about the band’s new upcoming album.

And writing songs and playing the songs, it feels like it always has, very energetic, powerful. And we have still great ideas. Good songwriting going on at the moment. And this album should be very powerful."

Metallica and Slipknot producer Greg Fidelman will be handling the controls for the record and Jabs was asked will follow a “heavier” direction than their previous releases. "I think so. Because we want it, and everybody says, 'Do something like in the old Blackout days, Love At First Sting. So, that is the idea. We're just a little bit older than we were back then, but that doesn't really matter."

Scorpions recently announced that they will be taking over the Las Vegas Strip later this year with their exclusive headlining residency show. Promoted by Live Nation and Caesars Entertainment, Scorpions “Sin City Nights” kicks off Saturday, July 4 at Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. ORANSSI PAZUZU Reveal New Album Details; Video Trailer Streaming

Uncovering the intensity and the metal inherent in non-metal, the avant-garde and anti-traditionalist inclinations of Finland’s Oranssi Pazuzu have always had transcendental goals at heart.

Through the rabbit hole and out the other side to 2020 with the release of their fifth album, Mestarin kynsi (“The Master’s Claw”). Inking a deal with German-based industry giants Nuclear Blast, Oranssi Pazuzu subvert the idea of world domination to open a conceptual discourse on indoctrination and propaganda itself. Their psychological nightmare evolves a philosophical and earnest tone, where occult future meets troubled reality.

Check out the album trailer that Oranssi Pazuzu have released to spread the word below. Pre-order Mestarin kynsi here.

Mestarin kynsi will be available as CD, 2LP Black Vinyl and 2LP Gold Vinyl.

Tracklisting:

"Ilmestys"
"Tyhjyyden Sakramentti"
"Uusi Teknokratia"
"Oikeamielisten Sali"
"Kuulen Ääniä Maan Alta"
"Taivaan Portti"

Trailer:

As “Oranssi”, meaning “orange” in their native Finnish language, is the colour of cosmic energy and “Pazuzu” is the ancient Mesopotamian demon of the wind, their swirling kaleidoscope of psychedelia has blown through the underground to redefine boundaries ever since their inception in 2007.

Jun-His: “We definitely wanted to look for new horizons, but on the other hand continue something we began building already on “Värähtelijä”. Some big influences were electro albums that inspired an idea about having a song that would travel through different kinds of portals whilst being mutilated and mutated by the new environment.”

On “Mestarin kynsi” the doors of perception are not only evoked but off their hinges. Working again with their co-producer Julius Mauranen, who also helped craft their acclaimed 2018 Roadburn Festival commissioned, Waste Of Space Orchestra collaboration live show/album Syntheosis, in their home-city of Tampere, Finland, the familiarity served a greater purpose towards the evolution of the album. As singer/guitarist Jun-His puts it, “there is a city heart pumping on this album somewhere.”

GOD DETHRONED Release "Book Of Lies" Music Video; Illuminati Album Out Now

God Dethroned have released their new album, Illuminati, via Metal Blade Records. You can order the album in a number of formats here.

A video for the new single, "Book of Lies" (the third of three interconnected short movies), can be viewed below.

God Dethroned guitarist/vocalist Henri Sattler comments: "Illuminati is out today and we can't wait for everyone to check out the album! We are also launching a third video today for 'Book Of Lies', which connects the storyline of the two previous singles/videos and hopefully is a track that will spark your interest in listening to the full album! Also, we are soon to start a heavy touring campaign: First it's three special album release shows this weekend, then next week we start a first European tour with Obscura, and afterwards it's festival time, but also another European tour of which we will reveal details soon. We look forward to seeing you at one of the upcoming shows this year!"

The immutable power of the Netherlands' greatest blackened death metal band, God Dethroned, rings true on new album, Illuminati - their most varied material to date. With a cover by Polish master Michał 'Xaay' Loranc (Nile, Evocation), Illuminati is conversant in the tenets of death metal - experimental where it needs to be, and indomitable in spirit. It's the kind of album that will bestow the Dutch heroes with accolades and push them across Europe (first with Obscura - see dates below) and then the rest of the globe (planning for North and South America is under way) throughout 2020.

Henri Sattler on Illuminati: "Freemasons, occultists and conspiracy theory enthusiasts pay attention! God Dethroned is back to smack you in the face with our new album called 'Illuminati'. After finishing the World War One trilogy, it was about time to go back to dark side with songs about religion, freemasonry and the occult. Song titles like 'Spirit of Beelzebub', 'Broken Halo', 'Book of Lies' and 'Satan Spawn' leave very little to the imagination as to what to expect from us from a lyrical point of view.

But those of you who expected us to go back into a raging frenzy of endless blastbeats and buzzsaw blade guitar sounds better beware. 'Illuminati' is our most varied album to date with a heavy, yet in-your-face type of production. We managed to make our sound bigger and more orchestral than ever before with the use of both atmospheric keyboard parts and many additional vocal parts such as choirs and grunt-on-tone type of vocals. There is a lot to be discovered in the songs of this album because of the many details hidden in the music that will only reveal itself after many listens, and at the same time the tunes on 'Illuminati' are catchier than ever before.

Lovers of Rhandy Roads-meets-Marty Friedman type of melodic guitar solos should definitely give Dave Meester's spectacular leads a listen. Dave was welcomed to the band's line-up during the European tour with Belphegor and Suffocation and stayed within our ranks ever since. Former guitar player Mike Ferguson however contributed greatly to 'Illuminati' by writing several stunning songs and riffs as well as recording half of all the rhythm tracks on the album. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours."
